There's a puddle on the floor perfectly shaped like a bird... The bulk of its body is round and enlongated, sat at the raised lip of stone he stands atop, and its tail drains left - long and luxurious. The head is a smaller blot above, merging down in a thick stream through the neck. Nikodemus' blood drips exactly where the eye should be.

He can't think.

He tries to... Follows the jut of a beak fathering between two stones and grapples at an anchor for his broken mind. Tries his hand at stringing a memory together. The thoughts are distant. Pale. White doves...? No, magpies... Bright sunlight. His thin legs burn in painful protest, desperate for rest. He wishes to sit but cannot. Though he can no longer feel the hook through the meat of his back, he knows it's there. The blood crusts around his toes now. Red. Red beak... Small bird, fitted to a tender palm. Sparrow.. Cuckoo... No.

He watches the mesmerizing ripple of the puddle below and thinks he is losing his mind. Is the leak coming from his shoulder or his broken teeth. It doesn't matter. The bird blinks at him rhythmically. His memories all blurr like a broken surface. Red beak. Pale birds. Noisy and mournful. Searching. He'd snapped their necks as mercy. He is more wound than man these days. These weeks perhaps. Months? Time's long ago blurred together in a delirium of red-hot agony and blissful black and nothing else, nothing inbetween. His body is a vast open chasm, rotted at the edges, and it weeps from every crevice, both blood and sweat like acid pouring into wounds fresh and festering and foul. ...Finches. The memory clears. He touches it.

Avita's finches. Small and pale and red-cheeked. Five witches finches she called them, all named after red flowers. He'd always thought they looked identical but she insisted she could tell them apart by birdsong. His eyes sting with unshed tears. Not now. Focus. Soft chirping mixed with cherubic laughter. The warm sun on his face and the precise pale blond of her little head. Red spring flowers. A noose. The hook snags on his back and his whole body screams.

Nikodemus sobs into the empty cell.

Death will not take him here. His body trembles with the effort to keep sane, not alive. He should be dead. (From the top. White dove. White wings.) He's sure he's begged for it, through the agony of blade, hook, hammer, fire and hunger and thirst, none of which had taken him when they should have. He cannot die here. They will not let him. (Angel. Heaven. Garden.)

"Eden." he gasps into the dark at last. It's an ugly desperate sound from an ugly desperate thing. "Eden ...Do you hear me?"

as a huge lover of birds, 90% of the concern against wind turbines being used for energy is literally just pro fossil fuel propaganda. birds ARE at a risk however there is a lot of strategies even as simple as painting one of the blades that reduces a lot of accidental deaths. additionally renewable energy sources will do more in favor of the environment that would positively impact birds (and all of us). one study found over one million bird deaths from wind turbines. while that is a shockingly high number and we should work to drastically shrink it, at least 1.3 billion birds die to outdoor cats on a yearly basis. it was never about caring about birds

Gotta say my favorite moment from the Hozier concert was him saying "I almost cracked up at the beginning of that song. There's a person in the front row wearing a shirt that says 'Hozier?
