Did it hurt?
Well, to answer that, we need to consider what *pain* is.
Did I feel a dull thudding feeling from the impact? Did my nerves light up as the fall turned my limbs to broken twigs and my organs to melted jelly? No. I didn’t *have* nerves to begin with, so no warnings flared on my internal dashboard and no neurons screamed fire in my mind.
Did I experience a powerful stabbing sensation from the wounds that were rent in my back? Also no. The things ripped away there had never been made of anything as mundane as molecules of calcium or keratin. There was no *damage* - if I looked injured or broken, that was now simply part of my perfect design.
So it did not ‘hurt’ when I fell from heaven. But I did *grieve*. I did *keen* my loss in a celestial chorus - a dirge echoed by every atom in creation.
I had been one thing. Now I was another. I had been perfect light and fire, and now I was *different* but still meticulously and *deliberately* formed. A death. A birth. Both famously painless experiences.
And oh, shall I speak to you of hell? Shall I tell you what it’s like to have been a thing of flawless order, knowing one’s place in the crystal spheres as a matter of intimate surety? To *know* you were such, but are now a creature of hunched reality and distorted, overlapping spaces. To have lost melody and become discordant, cacophonous, burning noise?
It is a place nothing fits. That nothing *should* fit. And yet … we had been folded and layered and *made* fit.
But the greatest of the pains we discovered? Oh, it was not the fall. It was that - after we had begun to explore the unpossible labyrinthined mess that was *hell* - we discovered there were already Things living here.
Things that were inimical to us. Things that were strange and squamous and fractal. Things that were never *just one thing* from one moment to the next.
And *that* is what hurt. For us, who were Just One Thing (and who hated the Thing we had become), their changeability was like a burr in the sandal, like acid in the throat. We had gone to war before, but we had never truly had an enemy until we met these *demons*.
And they despised us right back. Despised our ordered minds, our defined nature, our predictable behaviours.
Oh how we warred, us and these creatures of the abyss.
So it caused some consternation when one of these demons took a shine to me.
More still when it decided to try to become my friend.
It took many centuries to come to terms with it.
But perhaps I should not have been so surprised. After all, they do say:
The enemy of my devilry is my fiend.

every day I see your face
in gray-scale, backdropped
against cardstock
and a poem,
pinned into my dashboard
while I’m blaring music
like we used to;
I know I love you still,
still and forever.
I’m reminded of every healing song
you used to show me,
how your hands
could caress carefully
down baselines
into precedence,
showing me the power
of creating in quiet;
how to use music
to combat the cacophony
of a tired mind
and finally focus.
I’m happier now
than I would have been
without you,
but I will grieve you
and how I know your memory
will fade;
yet you’ll never be forgotten.
I wish I would have been
a better friend,
that I could have been there in your pain;
while I was driftwood
I didn’t know
you were building a pyre.
so I’m sorry
it took suicide
for me to see
how selfish I’d become.
to see
that I’d backed myself into a corner
where none of you could reach me…
where I couldn’t reach any of you.
so I’m sorry
I ran,
so far away.
please tell me I have learned
from these mistakes
and that I can still be here
for our friends who remain;
maybe
together we each
can pick up a small piece
of your place.
-How I’ll Love You Still-

Tylvinian Tales: The Wolf's Den
Chapter Five: Trace
CW: Suggestive jokes/innuendo
Ferusian Law, Second Sequence, Article Two: Auxiliary Income
Citizens are entitled to additional income through unregistered means, so long as that income and its source is declared once monthly. Auxiliary income exceeding $5,000 per month is subject to standard income tax.
Failure of any citizen to declare auxiliary income or its source is punishable by a fine of $10,000 and up to five years imprisonment.
Failure of any citizen to pay standard income tax on auxiliary income exceeding $5,000 is punishable by up to five years imprisonment.
He lived across town, and Tylvin’s traffic wasn’t the fastest. On the one hand, it was frustrating to deal with the other drivers on the road. On the other hand, David got a little more time to recover from our conversation. I looked over at David, chuckling to myself. There was a song playing on the radio, I’d been tuning it out, and there he was sitting next to me lip-syncing the words and half-dancing in his seat. It was adorable, to say the least. His tail was around his waist, but loosely, and the end of it was flicking and swaying in time with the music. His fingers danced across the dashboard of the truck, tapping out the beat.
His teeth, white and pointed, with those trademark feline fangs, flashed with every word as his lips parted and closed to mimic speech, silently singing along. He was really enjoying the tune, and I smiled at him before looking back to the road, gently braking at a traffic light. I could feel the truck ever so gently shifting, David’s dancing moving the truck in rhythm the slightest bit. I loved seeing him like this, seeing him happy. I’d seen him sad often enough, and it made every moment he spent smiling one worth cherishing, as far as I was concerned. He deserved it, this happiness. This, and more.
My mind flashed back to last night. He had his eyes on someone. Merissa had said they were big. Strong. Why hadn’t they come to his party? Were they embarrassed of him? Or did they just not care? What could have possibly been so important to miss it? I felt a growl welling up in my chest and fought to stifle it. He wasn’t worth worrying over. If he hurt David, he’d have Davina and I to answer to. I was strong, and hard to put down, and it wasn’t often I met someone who could take me in a fight. But even with all my power and all my resilience, I was terrified of David’s sister.
She was fast, smart, and when she got mad she was as terrifying as a late storm, all lightning and rage. She was one of the sweetest people I’d ever met, but even hundreds of miles away I knew she’d be here in an hour or less if she found out anyone had hurt David. Glancing at him as I accelerated, seeing the light had turned green, it was hard to believe just last night he had been crying into my chest over this guy. Dancing, now abandoning all pretense and openly singing along to the songs playing on the radio, his smile ten miles long.
He was complicated to me. He could be broken, shattered, completely destroyed one moment and a single joke could bring him back to full delight. Meanwhile, I’d watched him become inconsolable over the characters of a movie or a TV show. I didn’t quite understand how he could be so deeply attached to fiction when real pains were so easily forgotten. But I suppose it wasn’t my job to understand, really. My job, as far as I was concerned, was to keep him happy and be there for him. Keep him safe from people like the bastard that stood him up last night. My job was to care, not to comprehend.
As we drove, songs ended and new ones began, with David singing along to each one. A couple of songs in, I found myself joining him. Our voices found harmony and we maintained it, and I couldn’t help but wonder if I should ask him to join me for some vocal work on a new song some time. He was a wonderful singer, all high notes and melodious flair. My voice, deep and full of bass, with the trademark gravel typical of male greatwolves was appealing, or so I’d been told, and while it worked wonders for my particular brand of music, it could do so much more if I paired it with the mellifluous sound of David’s own.
He smiled at me, blue eyes twinkling with that pure joy I loved seeing in him, and as we pulled into the parking lot of his apartment complex, he made no move to get out. We sat there, singing and dancing in our seats as the song continued, all the way to its end. As the song finished, I pulled the key and opened my door, the truck turning off in response. We each stepped out, and David strolled up to the building.
It was a large building, one of the bigger complexes found in Tylvin. Forty stories high, and nearly the size of a city block at that. David lived on the ninth floor and knowing him he was going to insist on taking the stairs. He loved taking the long way whenever he could, seeing it as a good chance to exercise and keep his figure. I never cared much; it didn’t take much effort on my part to keep my build. I had always been at my best, even when I'd been lazy. I followed suit, approaching the building and watching David disappear through the front door.
I came through after him and saw him skipping his way to the elevators. He must be in a hurry if he was riding the elevator. I smiled, watching his tail sway idly, lazily half-looped around his waist and flicking excitedly. His eyes were locked on the elevator floor indicator, watching it count down slowly. I chuckled to myself, watching him bounce up and down in place. He glanced my way and smiled sheepishly, letting out an embarrassed “Mrow…”
I took my place beside him, patting his shoulder. “Not sure why you’re so excited, you’re grabbing a work uniform. To go to work.” I said, smirking teasingly at him. He bumped against me, purring a little.
“I dunno…I just feel good!” He replied, leaning against me and purring more noticeably. I rolled my eyes, letting him nuzzle against me. I didn’t return the affection often, I always felt strange being that way with folks, but I didn’t have any issue with David expressing his.
The elevator opened, and we stepped inside to ride it up. He hit the button for the ninth floor, and we started going up. He was still bouncing on his toes, purring and half-dancing to the music of the elevator. I took a second to listen to the melody, finding the rhythm. When I had, I leaned back against one corner to give him plenty of room, placing a hand on my thigh and patting loudly in time with the melody. With a solid beat to focus on, his movements took on more energy, now standing in the center of the elevator and idly dancing to the music.
I watched him, his paws tapping and shifting along the floor, arms lazily moving in what I imagine he thought made sense. His hair flicking and swaying with his movements and that long tail uncurling from his waist and shifting along with his dancing. I watched him let the music take over, let the beat control his paws, his hands. My eyes were locked on him, his own closed as he smiled softly. My eyes flicked to the indicator, and I grinned as the doors opened two floors early.
Two older men, jackals, stepped inside and saw David dancing and shuffled in past him. The caxy, hearing the door open, had opened his eyes to see that not only were we not on his floor, but we were now accompanied by a pair of strangers. He stopped dancing, shuffling over to my side shyly and looking down at the floor. I laughed a little and looked at the jackals. “Sorry about that, music’s music, y’know?”
The pair gave an apathetic nod with one of them pressing the button for the ground floor. The doors closed and we continued upward, with David standing idly by my side the rest of the way up. When the doors opened up to the ninth floor, we stepped out and I gave the jackals a nod before following David to his apartment. It had been a few months since I had last been inside the place. I looked around, hoping to have seen some changes since the last time I was here, though my smile faded the more I scanned my surroundings once inside.
His was a studio apartment, with a small living area and kitchen combined into a single room with his bedroom connected by a door. In the living area, in place of furniture were piles of boxes with masking tape marked by words written in permanent marker. Some were labelled clothes, others as dishes, some were simply marked as miscellaneous. On one side of the room was a large dresser, one I recalled helping him get in here. David made his way to it, opening the top drawer and rifling through it as I continued to explore his apartment, hoping for some sign of change.
The bedroom was largely as I remembered it. I couldn’t see any difference between its current state and what it was when I’d been here last, nearly six months ago. His bed was a mattress on the floor, a sheet loosely thrown over it and a weighted blanket over that, with a small pillow at the head. There was a door on one wall which led to the bathroom. He had a small desk against the opposite wall and a cheap rolling chair as well. The desk held pens, paper, pencils both mechanical and traditional, with several cases of graphite refills scattered across it.
On the desk, front and center, lay a rough profile sketch of a wolf, smiling wide. It hadn’t been colored yet, or even lined, and it was mostly devoid of detail. I smiled, glad to see he had been drawing again. Turning to leave, I stepped into the living area as David was pulling off his shirt. He was already wearing his work pants, black denim and form-fitting, with the skirt he’d worn until now having been discarded, lying on the floor beside him.
The mesh shirt, lying next to the skirt on the floor, hadn’t covered up very much but it still obscured his fur a little. Now entirely uncovered, my eyes wandered along his form. His slim, lean figure built for agility and flexibility was attractive, to say the least. He was slender, elegant in frame and pattern. I watched the muscles shift and stretch beneath his fur with every movement, a reminder he wasn’t unfit. My smile faded slightly as his shirt fell over him, covering up that physique I had been admiring.
I looked him over, watching him tuck the pastel yellow work shirt into his pants. “Ready to go?” I asked, heading for the door.
“Not yet, I need my name tag, Kaleb will be pissed if I forget it again.” He answered, quickly scavenging in the top drawer for a moment. “Ow!” He yipped, whimpering as he pulled his hand from the drawer. I rushed over, closing the gap between the door and David in a heartbeat, taking hold of his wrist to look at his hand. The pad of his ring finger had been pricked, and a small amount of blood was coming out from the wound.
With his free hand, he reached into the drawer and grabbed at the offending object, lifting his nametag and holding it carefully. The pin that fastened it in place was sticking out, no doubt what had pricked his finger.
I looked to his finger sympathetically, leaning down and lifting his hand to gently lap at the wound. He winced at first, but relaxed and let me work, the very tip of my tongue gently brushing along the pad of his finger. I raised up, the taste of copper on my tongue from the spot of blood I’d cleaned off him and smiled. “Better?” I asked. He nodded, smiling at me.
“Yeah, better. Thanks, big guy.” He answered. I gave a soft growl of happiness; glad he was feeling better.
“Come on, let’s go then.” I suggested, and the pair of us made our way out of the apartment. He locked it behind him, and we made for the elevator.
The ride down was much the same as the ride up, with David idly dancing to the music as I tapped out a beat for him. At the bottom, we stepped out of the elevator and left the building, climbing into my truck once again. I fastened my seat belt in place and started the engine, waiting for David to fasten his own. When he had, I accelerated, driving from the parking lot onto the road. David only lived a couple of blocks from the café, and without a single traffic light to slow us down we made it there in less than a few minutes.
I pulled into the parking lot, unlocking the doors for a moment so David could get out. Instead of doing so, he turned to me while unfastening his seat belt. “Hey, why don’t you come in? I’ll get you a coffee and something to eat. As thanks!” He offered. I chuckled, still mostly satisfied from breakfast this morning.
“Davey, what do you need to thank me for? You already cooked breakfast for me, after all.” I reminded him, only for the caxy to scoff in return.
“You know that’s just part of the deal, mister. I stay the night, I cook breakfast. It’s just how the world works. But you drove me around so I wouldn’t get in trouble with Kaleb, and I wanna thank you for it.” He said with an almost commanding tone, like he wasn’t giving me a choice. Thinking about it, I supposed he really wasn’t. I sighed, shaking my head and smiling.
“Alright, alright, I’ll come in.”
The café was simple and elegant, with a forest green awning over a wooden door with a coffee cup carved into it. Stepping inside, I was assaulted by the scent of coffee, vanilla, chocolate, and various foods. There were several tables, and David pointed out a table near the front counter. I nodded my understanding, heading for it as he stepped behind the counter. Sitting at the table, I looked over in David’s direction. I watched him walk into the back room through the employee door, out of sight.
I smiled, picking up a menu and scanning it. They had a fair variety of choices, but nothing you wouldn’t expect at a place like this. Sandwiches, pasta, coffee, tea, a few soft drinks. The most out of the ordinary item on their menu was a personal sized pizza. I sat the menu down, deciding on my choice. While I waited for David to come back out, I let my eyes wander around the room. There were a few other patrons in the café, but not as many as I had expected given David’s stories of how crowded the place could get.
I could see a lynx, sitting at a table with a jaguar, and near the back corner sat a macaque by himself. It didn’t seem too popular at the moment, but I supposed that worked for me. I liked a crowd, but mostly just the kind that jumped around and did bad things on the dance floor. The stuffy, boring folks that sat in quiet cafés to relax weren’t people I had beef with, but they weren’t the kind of crowd I had interest in. I pulled out my phone, and opened one of my game apps, combining elements in sequence on the screen.
David came back a few minutes later, smiling. He skipped over to me and flipped open a notebook. “What can I get for you today, Mr. Trayson?” He asked, purring my name. I laughed, raising a brow.
“Easy, the whole waiter-flirting-with-customer thing might give people the wrong idea.” I replied, smirking at him. He just rolled his eyes and tapped the paper with his pencil, silently encouraging me to give my order. I glanced at the menu one more time to refresh my memory, already having forgotten what I’d settled on.
“I’ll take a footlong steak and cheese, double meat, and a large water.” I said, folding the menu up again and holding it up for him. He nodded, writing down the order and taking the menu.
“Great choice, we’ll get that out in two shakes of a badger’s tail~!” He giggled, skipping back to the back room. I returned my attention to the phone, casually swiping elements together on the screen. I sat back in my chair, resting the phone on the table and laying my head back against the headrest of the chair, closing my eyes.
I could smell food all around me, and even with breakfast this morning having been so nice, my stomach growled at the scent of meat, pasta, and pastries all around me. I thought about the sandwich being prepared in the back, my mouth beginning to water at the various smells. My phone buzzed, and as I glanced at the screen I saw a text from Trace. Trace was one of David’s best friends, and an ex of mine. We had remained uneasy friends for a while after the breakup, but these days it felt like we had never dated at all, even if we did joke about it.
He had sent me a picture. It was me, sitting in the café. I looked so bored, phone in hand and leaned back in my chair. I raised a brow, looking towards the window to see the man himself grinning like an idiot. I watched him walk into the café, making a beeline for my table. He sat down and gave me a look, one corner of his mouth turned up in a smirk. Trace was, for all intents and purposes, my best friend. David’s too, though their bond was of a different nature.
He was an ex-lover, to me, but one I still held a high respect for. I looked at him, taking in a quick glance. His reddish-brown hair was styled up in a fauxhawk, framed by his scruffy ears tipped in dark burgundy fur. My eyes wandered lower, his own piercing pools of yellow locked on mine intently. The dark burgundy fur of his muzzle had grown out a little since the last time I’d seen him. It gave him a more rugged appearance, and I had to admit he was starting to look more handsome than I did. The dark of his muzzle trailed along his throat, ending in a rounded point at the clavicle, contrasting sharply against the light greyish-brown, beige-like color of the rest of his fur.
He was wearing a plain black deep-cut V-neck tee shirt beneath his jacket, which was a simple white zip-up track jacket. I noticed a patch on the right breast pocket, a new addition. It was a black circle with a stylized silver S in the center. I couldn’t see below the table, but I’d seen him on his way in. He wore a pair of white track pants, matched to his jacket, and his old blue running shoes. Most of the time shoes were unnecessary, but in Trace’s life they were required. He spent his time running, making mad dashes across the city for one reason or another, and needed the extra padding and protection for his paws.
He waved a hand at me, one brow raised. “Hey man, I get that I’m fine, but you could stare a little less you know.” He said, snark dripping from every word. I chuckled, leaning back in my chair a little and nodding slowly.
“Yeah, yeah. Like I didn’t get enough eyefuls of you back in the day.” I retorted, earning a scoff from the fox.
“You mean back when we were fucking.” He grinned, his eyes never leaving mine. He was watching me like a hawk, his teeth visible through the barest gap in his lips. A challenge to meet him as an equal.
I bared my teeth idly, locking eyes with him properly in return and leaning forward over the table. “Yeah, back when I was rocking your world.” I smirked, fangs shining in the gentle light of the room. He leaned forward, arms on the table as he closed the gap between us.
“Oh, you were rocking mine? Who was calling whose name then, big guy?” He replied. I could feel myself losing the challenge and decided to stop holding back.
“Who was calling in to work three times a week for more?” I growled lightly, a playful sound. He moved closer, his muzzle inches from mine. I could feel his breath against the fur of my maw, the scent of fluoride and mint flooding my nose as he came dangerously close to me.
“Who was dropping everything to come by whenever I called out of work~?” He whispered and leaned back. I tried to reply but couldn’t. He had me. I shrugged, conceding. He laughed and nodded at me, finally breaking eye contact. “That’s what I thought. I had you so whipped. Still would, but, well, I always knew you were a tits guy. I figured you’d dip when I tossed mine.” He accused, a cocky smirk on his face. My expression drooped, ears dipping back a little as I averted my gaze. Our breakup had been messy, a lot of miscommunications and misconceptions. And I still wasn’t entirely over how I’d made him feel.
His expression softened immediately, and he lost the attitude he’d been giving since he walked in. He leaned over the table, putting a hand on my arm and locking eyes again. I instinctively avoided his gaze. He rubbed my arm gently, looking at me worriedly. “I’m sorry, Ryder. I didn’t mean to take it too far, I thought we were past all that.” He said softly. I nodded, a quick motion, ready to get past the subject. He sat back in his chair and kicked my shin a little, grabbing my attention to nod to the side.
I looked over, seeing David approach with my order and setting it on the table in front of me with a giggle. "One footlong steak and cheese, triple meat and double-down cheese!" He said proudly. I shook my head. He knew that wasn't my order, he never got an order wrong.
"I ordered-" He shushed me, smiling.
"I know, Rye. Double meat, but you seemed so down I just had to go and up the order a little! Aaaand..." He giggled, turning to hug Trace, even his tail curling around the fox. Trace seemed bigger, compared to David. He was around average height, but even average looked tall next to David.
"Yeah, yeah, how's it hangin' young'un?" Trace scoffed, hugging David back. The pair let go of each other and David pulled out his notepad again, tapping it with his pen excitedly.
"It's good, all good! Thanks for stopping by last night, by the way. I wish you could have stayed longer though, you didn't even get to see Ryder's set!" David said, pushing a menu to Trace, only to have it pushed back his way.
"Cup of coffee, mild, and a bottle of water for the road. And maybe a grilled cheese, could use something in my gut. I'd have stuck around longer, but I had to get to bed. Just got back from Gala, babysitting Moss for 'Vina, you get it."
Davina was David's twin sister. Names and fur aside, they were markedly different, and it had blown us all for a loop when we met Moss, the caxy she'd adopted a couple years back. Trace kept tabs on them, more than we did, and was always back and forth from Tylvin to Gala. Eight hundred miles, sixteen hundred a week. If he wasn't working two jobs, he'd never afford it. I rolled my eyes, shaking my head. I couldn't imagine why he'd spend so much on something like that instead of just moving out there, but I was sure he had his reasons.
"How they doin' anyway?" I asked, curious. "Last I heard, Moss was comin' back with you most weekends to watch you run." Trace simply laughed, nodding and gesturing towards the parking lot. I glanced out one of the windows to see a familiar teen caxy hunched against the window in Trace's car. Moss.
"You heard right. They're looking to train up, run with me now and then." David, distracted from his job by the conversation, suddenly perked up with a smile.
"Mossy is here, right now!?" He almost seemed to forget he was on the clock, about to dart out the door to go say hi. I grabbed his apron, stopping him in his tracks and chuckling to myself.
"You know they'll be 'round all weekend. C'mon, you're workin'. Keep that tail busy, or Kaleb'll have it mounted on the wall." I said warningly. David simply purred, his tail lifting just enough to notice the intent as he eyed me lasciviously.
"What if I want Kaleb to mount me on the wall?" He asked, giggling before taking off to give the cooks Trace's order. Trace and I shared a look before laughing.
"He's as lusty as ever, huh?" Trace asked. I nodded, looking back to the counter. I hadn't noticed before, but there was another worker at the counter, managing pick-up orders.
They were tall, and rather than the uniform David wore, the man at the counter was dressed in a form-fitting suit, royal purple. It bore intricate designs along the collar, and a silver chain hung from the inside of their coat, into the breast pocket on the outside. They were a snake, purple scales across their body, save for the light pink along the throat, palms, and brow ridges. Their eyes were fierce, focused, and an almost glowing fuchsia. The fur on the back of my neck stood on end when I looked into those eyes, and I felt a chill in my spine seeing more than I'd bargained for in them. Those eyes were dangerous, more so than the fangs in the snake's mouth were. I could feel it.
Trace kicked my shin again, gesturing to my food. I shook my head, clearing my thoughts. "Thanks, got a little distracted. So how's 'Vina doin'? Any big clients?" I asked. Trace shook his head, leaning back in his chair a little.
"Nah, lotta little'ns though. Bunch'a indie places asking for some professional exposure." He replied, closing his eyes and rocking in his chair.
"Lemme guess, she's happy to give'em some professional exposure long as they don't mind a little exposure after the shoot?" We shared a laugh, with Trace nodding a bit.
"Yep, sometimes during the shoot too if the client's in that line of work." He said with a grin.
We talked a little more, catching up more than anything, until his order came out. David brought it but didn't stick around to talk, hurrying to another table to get another order. Trace picked up his food and drink, and stood. "Was good seein' ya, you take care of that caxy of ours, got it? I'll kick your ass if that dude he's thinkin' of gets one over on'im on your watch." He warned. I believed him too. I nodded, waving at him.
"Will do, now go on, 'fore Moss wakes up out there and wonders where you are." I urged. Trace laughed, nodding and heading out the door. I watched him hop in his car, taking off seconds later.
I sat there, eating my food in the quiet, dull buzz of the shop, tuning out the other conversations, growling happily at the taste of my sandwich. I was about to finish it off when I heard the bell ding, the door to the café opening. With a glance up, my heart sank.
I recognized the ferret walking in. He'd always been a thorn in our side, mine and David's. Ever since junior high. He was wearing the same uniform David was, and he stormed through the employee door back towards where David was after collecting a couple of orders. I could smell the tension, the anger.
Jonas had come into work after all.

Scalability: SAP HRIS grows with your organization, whether you have a small business or a global enterprise.
Integration: Seamless integration with other SAP modules (finance, supply chain, etc.) and external systems, ensuring a unified data flow across your business.

It is crucial for plan administrators to carefully evaluate the available cloud solutions before investing in them. Some retirement plan administration software providers have expertise in providing specific solutions. While other technology solutions are better suited for a more improvisational approach.
What does the Cloud comprise?
The retirement plan industry faces unique challenges when it comes to storing data. Besides storing data properly, it must also be available to all stakeholders as and when required. The cloud technology stack comprises the following layers:
Infrastructure and platform layer that includes hardware, network, and other resources.
Application layer to add functionalities
Differentiation layer for ensuring regulatory compliance

Do you have any suggestions on how to become better at negotiation as a soft skill in tech? I’d love to solve problems across departments but I feel like I don’t have enough experience in each department or know how to navigate it.
Off the top of my head:
1. Build relationships with key decision makers. Most things in life, not just business, are relationship dependent. The success of your ideas will largely live and die on two things: the effectiveness of your execution and the strength of your relationships. The fastest way to build strong relationships is to deliver positive impact. Ask: "What can I take off your plate that’ll help you achieve your goals?" This establishes you as a reliable party and a friendly face. It’s a quick way to build social capital and become allies with the people who make the final call when you’re stuck and need to be unstucked.
2. Understand their goals. Ask: What are their OKRs (objective and key results) and KPIs (key performance indicators)? How do they measure excellence? How close (or far) are they to them? What are their leaders prioritizing on their roadmap? To find these, look for metrics dashboards, newsletters, quarterly reports, and attend meetings that share out performance. This will give you instant insight into their current state, their pain points, and their destination. This equips you to go into negotiations with eyes wide open.
For example, if you know the Finance department was over budget last quarter and they got in trouble for it, then proposing an expensive project probably isn’t going to fly. However, now that you know this, you can anticipate and manage resistance: "Project A is going to cost $$$ which I know may be a concern but we expect an ROI of $$$$$ by [date] that will more than compensate for the cost." Information is power.
3. Present options, not just a single solution. If you’re tackling a tough problem, come with two or more options, not just one, even if you really favor a particular solution. This shows other people that you’ve done thorough research, explored alternatives, identified trade-offs (pros and cons), and calculated the impact of your actions outside of just your department’s needs. Above all, it signals that you’re open to input because you’re coming to them to begin a discussion instead of dictating an order.
A simple example would be something like this:
“I’ve ran the numbers and narrowed down our options to these 3:
If we hire 2 more engineers, it’ll cost $200k, but we can launch 10 products on our roadmap
If we hire 1 more engineer, it’ll cost $100k, but we can launch 5 more products on our roadmap
If we hire 0 engineers, it won’t cost us anything, but we’ll need to cut 5 products from our roadmap
Based on these options, I recommend hiring 1 more engineer. Even if this puts us over budget, we can launch our 5 top priority products by the end of year and still hit our metrics. I’d like to get your input and hear your thoughts on this.”
Iterate until you reach an agreement.
And sometimes there are no good options (ex: your solution requires working weekends to get things done), and if that’s the case, then suffer together. Don’t be a seagull-- seagulls shit on people and fly away-- be present and accountable. If you propose a tough solution that requires other people to suffer, then be there in the trenches with them. This earns respect and trust that’ll last beyond one project.

Okay @princekirijo you want an essay? Well here it is now, or as I like to call it Felix's "Asumari is great and this fandom has no fucking taste" rambling and infodump. Congrats fellas, thanks to Prince you ALL get an asumari essay. But before that I'll try to give you a rundown of Mari and Asuka.
(I'm also so sorry for putting this long ass post on everyone's dashboard)
(Spoiler warning for Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time!!)
Alright on one hand we have Mari Illustrious Makinami. Her whole deal? She's a walking ray of sunshine, literally lol. Unlike any other character in the Evangelion franchise she doesn't suffer from her trauma, she's quite literally the only healthy and functioning human being, she's just slightly leaning towards "batshit crazy" with the stunts she pulls 🤷‍♂️. Other than that she just loves living, she loves being with people, she keeps moving forward, stays positive and decides to live life to it's fullest even after she experiences loss and multiple apocalyptic events (Second Impact, Third Impact, etc.) and she really just embodies the joy of living. That's all there is to her, or at least all we know.
On the other hand, we have Asuka Langley Shikinami who is... well it's hard to explain what she is to be honest. She's part-German and part-Japanese and part of a line of clones specifically made with the purpose to pilot an Evangelion and later on be used as a sacrifice to trigger another Impact (ITS COMPLICATED I KNOW-) Asuka is, unlike Mari, very much suffering from her trauma. She doesn't have her parents and has a very deep seated belief that she's completely alone, which she says doesn't matter as long as she can pilot the Eva. She also very much wants to fight and kill angels all by herself, and it's seriously messing with her when she can't achieve that.
Now we get to the more interesting parts (hopefully this so far wasn't too confusing, then again it's Eva and even I can't fully wrap my head around it all LMAO)
In the second Rebuild movie (Evangelion 2.0 You can (not) advance) we get introduced to both of them, Mari's introduction scene (in the original English dub) has her pilot an Eva and singing about how she'll take the world on by herself, while in the third movie's (Evangelion 3.0 You can (not) redo) opening scene she's piloting the Eva again but this time it's together with Asuka (in her own Unit 02 though) and during that Mari sings about how wonderful it is not to be alone. It's nothing big yet, but it's a really cute detail me thinks,,, you know what else I love about them? They bicker and they banter and it's genuinely so fun to listen to shskdhsuwj
(For a quick catch up: During the end of 2.0 Shinji (the protagonist) triggers another apocalyptic event, the Near Third Impact, and was only stopped due to Kaworu (the guy in my pfp) stepping in. Also between 1.0/2.0 and 3.0/3.0+1.0 are about 14 years (without Shinji bc he's like comatose) where A LOT happens AND we learn in 3.0 that Eva pilots don't age physically bc of "The curse of the Eva"... honestly Eva is wild lmao)
Okay okay I'll get back to it!
So one thing that happens is that Asuka during 2.0 develops a crush on Shinji (girl why-), unfortunately things take a turn for the worse. Asuka had volunteered to be the testpilot for a new Eva (Unit 03), she seemed happy at the time and it was a really sweet build up with the "I can smile, I didn't know I could still do that."-line. And then? Then it turns out the Ninth Angel had infected Unit 03 (Angels are basically the Kaijus they fight using Evas btw). The thing goes on a loose and Shinji is forced to fight it (With Asuka inside mind you), he refuses and his father uses an autopilot to destroy Unit 03. And boy did it destroy the angel, well it and it crushed Asuka between its jaws (you can actually hear her scream btw haha pain :)).
Asuka survived though, but the whole incident cost her her humanity and she ended up becoming an angel herself/she took the place of the Ninth. But despite that, there's one person who keeps believing in Asuka's humanity, who fiercely believes Asuka is still a human and tells her as much.
Yep, that one person is Mari and she keeps holding onto that belief until the very end when Asuka uses her last resort, which is using the power of an angel (Doing so was a guaranteed death sentence btw). Mari's own words (in the German dub) were, "Princess, you're giving up being human…" AND IT MAKES ME SO EMO GOD FUCK
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I'm at it, Mari and Asuka are a fucking killer combo as a team. They rely on each other for support in combat, listen to the other's orders and advice. Especially in Asuka's case it's kind of a big deal that she so openly relies and counts on Mari's support. Like these two trust each other with their damn lifes!!! Holy shit!!
Guess what though, they also have nicknames for eachother. Mari always calls Asuka "Princess" or "(Your) Highness" while Asuka calles Mari "Four-eyes" / "Four-eyed chrony (idk how you spell that tbh RIP" Even better though, in the German dub Asuka calls Mari "Brillerella" as in a combination of "Brille" (German for glasses) and "Cinderella",,,,Cinderella and her Prince,,,Brillerella and her Princess,,, man, that was a gay fucking move of the translation team. Spoiler: I owe them my life.
Funfact: There's exactly two times throughout the Rebuild movies where Mari uses Asuka's actual name. These two times being when she watches Asuka "die" and be used as a sacrifice for Gendo's selfish plan and when later on she begs Shinji, "So please the Princess… Asuka needs your help!" And the best part? That wasn't even the first time she did that. The mentioned line came from 3.0+1.0, but she did that too in 3.0 with the, "At least save the Princess!" line (although her tone was much more...pissed, like she was really angry lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember the crush Asuka had on Shinji? Well due to the Unit 03 incident a whole lot of other shit got mixed into that and her feelings for him in general became really bitter (understandably so). Now Mari being who she is sometimes teases Asuka about said old crush but she really does want Asuka to get closure and sort that mess out.
As an example for the teasing, in 3.0 there's a scene that goes like this (please imagine Mari with a literal :3 face while saying that):
"Unit! Are you back in the game?"
"I'm on it, your Highness. But first things first, how was our little puppy (Shinji)? Did he sit like a good little boy?"
"He's exactly the same! Same stupid face talking mayhem!"
"That goofy face of his, that's what you wanted to see? Riiiiight?"
"Shut up! I went there to bat him one!... And I feel better!"
There's also a very short bonus manga that was released in Japan for Thrice Upon a Time's release that has Mari trying to convince Asuka to come with her on the mission to get Shinji, given everything that follows, it's just another thing to prove my point. And the final bit relating to that is this:
"Feeling better now?"
"Yeah, I do feel better."
That's the exchange Asuka and Mari have after they talked to Shinji, it's nothing special but I think it's really sweet and this time Asuka actually sounded like she was feeling better instead of when she was screaming after she nearly broke pretty thick glass with her fist (If she had hit someone with that much force she definitely would've broken something omggg #violentimpulsesgang)
To get back on track though: I already mentioned it but during the second half of 3.0+1.0 Asuka "dies" (and honestly that entire scene is worth its own in-depth post because its just one huge parallel to The End of Evangelion), the point is: You can tell that the loss of Asuka honestly hits Mari hard. Not only because of how Mari screams Asuka's name but also because of her expressions. They're pained, like really fucking pained and Mari even apologizes to her that she has to fall back due to the fact that she's injured AND because eveything is going wrong.
Tumblr media
After the events of Evangelion 3.0 these two got seperated from eachother, Mari was with WILLE (the organization both of them are with) and on board of Wunder (the ship WILLE basically operates from) while Asuka was in a Village full of (Near) Third Impact Survivors. When they do meet again it went like this:
Asuka, barely back, comes to the door and calls, "I'm back." And within seconds of Asuka stepping into their room after the door opens Mari already runs towards her, arms wide open and she says, "Welcome back, your Highness! Good job. I missed you so much!" And she says that while she literally nuzzles into Asuka,,,like,,,what the fuck gay people real!!!
Tumblr media
Best part? Asuka clearly has enough strength to push Mari completely away if she were uncomfortable, but she doesn't. Asuka merely wanted enough space to look at the room (because Mari managed to horde even more books lol) and play her game. During their entire renunion Mari keeps hugging her, and part of me thinks that perhaps deep down Asuka actually enjoys the feeling of physical affection.
Tumblr media
Before we get to the last point though, let me say that Asuka and Mari have scenes in 3.0+1.0 that parallel Shinji and Kaworu's from 3.0. (Fyi Kaworu loves Shinji (yeah, like that, and 3.0 was basically them being gay as fuck for an hour) so like...do I even need to explain?
Tumblr media
And then of course there's also this, the "Take care of yourself, Princess…" line. That is the last time Mari talks to Asuka and as much as that line alone already is so much, it's Mari's expression in particular that kills me. Because this? This soft, almost bittersweet expression she has, as she basically says goodbye? Because she knows Asuka will finally be happy and safe? It just makes me feel so much actually. Man.
Tumblr media
In the end it's a fact that Mari loved Asuka, wether that is interpreted as platonic or romantic by someone is up to them. But it is a fact that Asuka was loved enough that someone wanted to hug her, was happy to see her, to praise her, was hurt by her loss, wanted her to be safe, that someone told her "Take care of yourself…" Asuka was really and honestly so loved that someone would tell her, "I missed you."
But Asuka? Asuka was too hurt, too wrapped up in her own head to actually see how loved she was by Mari (and other people) that she genuinely believed she's completely alone and always will be alone.
It makes the "Take care of yourself" line hit even harder to me, because it's not only Mari's goodbye, but it's a goodbye during the one time Asuka allowed herself to be vulnerable and admit what she really wanted.
And honestly? All of this? Its makes me feel so many things and I just love them  so much man.

Chapter 1 — The Prince
Summary: In which our heroine meets cute
Chapter 1 of 7 on AO3
“But don’t forget folks,
That’s what you get folks
For makin’ whoopee”
-Makin’ Whoopee, Eddie Cantor
Emma Swan had been in some tight spots, but she’d never been in a run out of gas on a deserted highway with a dying cell phone battery and a stomach as empty as her bank account kind of situation before. In truth, she blamed this unfortunate situation on the same person she blamed all the misfortunes of her adulthood. Neal Cassidy.
There was a time a few short months ago she would have done anything for the man responsible for her current circumstances. Neal had been too good to be true. A real Prince Charming, down to the supposed trust fund and a smile that made her believe in happy endings.
She’d been a sucker. She heard one was born every minute, she just never thought her time would come. After all, one of the few things she learned in the foster system was how to spot bullshit from a mile away. But he looked at her with his soulful eyes and whispered promises in his smoky voice and she fell for it. More than once, actually, and all she had to show for the wasted years was a voicemail box full of collection calls and a wolf at the door.
Because Neal Cassidy didn’t just leave her. He stole her identity, maxed out her credit cards, and took out half a dozen loans in her name. Then he proceeded to use the money to wine and dine a wide assortment of women, the sheer number of which would make Casanova blush. All the while professing his undying love and spending his days eating all her food and watching television from his favorite seat on the couch.
Seriously, you could still see the faint outline of his backside on the cushion.
As countless victims of his schemes started showing up at her door looking for the man who made them feel alive while killing them one dollar at a time, she listened to tears and rants and misery with ill-disguised impatience. How had she become the counselor to the trail of broken girls he left in his wake? When was it going to be her turn to moan and groan and swear she’d never love again?
Well, she did get around to the swearing to never love again part. Some mistakes don’t bear repeating.
The final straw happened two months ago. Neal had disappeared after their final fight. His righteous indignation at being called on his crap and inability to find a plausible excuse for the stack of overdue bills and statements she found stuffed in the back of his gym bag made it difficult to share the same space. She wanted him gone even as her hands itched to touch him one more time.
Unfortunately, leaving her drowning in debt with the knowledge he cheated on her for the majority of their relationship wasn’t enough for him. He decided to do some collateral damage on his way out of town.
He did the unforgivable. He went after Granny.
His target was meant to wound her. While he lied and schemed the entire time they were together, she had been an open book for the first time in her life so he knew Granny was the sole connection she formed as a foster. Her brief stay with the woman before she aged out of the system was a time of peace and healing. Granny was responsible for helping her get on her feet and the two maintained a friendship years later.
Emma received the frantic call from Ruby explaining her grandmother had been tricked into giving Neal a blank check so he could do her grocery run. Hours later, she received a notification from her bank saying her checking account had been wiped out. At that point, the tenuous control Emma had on her emotions disappeared. She sat on the kitchen floor of the apartment she was about to lose, staring at empty walls that still echoed with his laughter in her weaker moments, and she broke into a million pieces.
So it was no wonder she vowed to have her vengeance. To do anything and everything to make him pay. Luckily, since he skipped out on a court date, catching him would also get her paid.
Tracking him had taken more time than she liked to admit. She was good; even penniless and running out of options, she recognized her worth and knew she possessed hard to find skill sets. But she had a sinking sensation that he might be better.
Now she was stranded on the side of the road with nothing except her most uncomfortable shoes to keep her company. But damn did they make her legs look good and with everything else in her life collapsing around her, somehow that seemed important.
Squaring her shoulders, she climbed out of the car and pondered her next course of action. She was unfamiliar with the state road connecting the two small towns on the Maine coast, so she had no idea what the odds were that a good samaritan would happen along. She had just enough juice in her battery and lettuce in her account to call for an Uber to take her to the seedy nightclub where Neal was last seen. Or she could walk the rest of the way in her mile-high heels knowing she never looked better, even though she would probably not be able to move the next day without a significant amount of pain.
What she would do if she found him or where she would stay if she didn’t weren’t questions she was ready to entertain.
Sighing, she pulled out her phone and with a huff of frustration opened her app. Pleading with whatever powers that be to let her last long enough to see herself through to the other side of this, she leaned against her beaten down yellow Bug and waited for the black sedan to show.
Of course, her phone died immediately after she booked her ride, finally giving up the ghost even though she didn’t get a chance to see the name or license plate of her hired car. Getting more anxious by the minute, she paced along the shoulder, careful to keep on the pavement since the ground was soft from recent rain. After what seemed like forever, but had probably not been more than half an hour, the headlights of a lone car crested a nearby hill.
“About time,” she muttered. To make sure the driver knew she was not pleased with the delay or the prodding pace he maintained despite the fact the sky seemed ready to open at any moment, she moved out into the middle of the lane and placed her hand on her hips. Pride kept her from squinting even though the bright high beams made her eyes water as the car approached.
Slowing from a crawl to a stop, the driver put the car in park and jumped out. It was dark and the man was dressed all in black, but as he moved around to the front of the car, she got the impression of blue eyes and a stubble-covered jaw that could probably cut glass. Great, just what she needed. A sexy Uber driver.
“Alright there, love?”
With a British accent. He probably smelled like bacon, too.
“What took you so long? I’ve been waiting all night.”
Moving closer, he smiled with a hint of confusion. “Had I known you were waiting for me, I would have been along sooner. Tell me, do you always accost strange men in the dead of night on empty roads?”
“Only when I’m paying them to take me where I need to go,” she grumbled, walking toward the back door on the passenger side. She pulled it open as he protested, and glared at him over the top of the car.
“Love, I think there may be a bit of a mix-up—“
“It’s fine. I won’t give you a bad rating for being late as long as you don’t talk to me. I’ve been driving for hours to get here and I need to think.”
She heard him sigh and saw the flash of his teeth as he smiled at her again. “Very well. Would you like me to get your bags?”
“You’d have to go to a pawn shop in Boston to accomplish that,” she joked, dropping into the leather seat and noticing for the first time the expensive luxury of her rented carriage. She supposed if she was going to spend her last dime on a ride, she could have done far worse.
She resisted the urge to use the low ambient lighting of the dashboard to get a better look at her temporary chauffeur. The glimpse she got outside was more than enough to know she needed to keep her distance. It didn’t stop her from feeling the weight of his stare as he peeked over his shoulder while clicking on his seatbelt. Out of the corner of her eye, she could have sworn she saw his tongue flicker slowly over his bottom lip before he turned his attention back to the road.
“Nice dress. Where are we heading this fine night, Miss…?”
“You’re really terrible at this. Is it your first time being a driver for hire?”
“What gave it away, love? It’s quite an unexpected development that came about just this evening. But you know what they say, you never forget your first.”
It was everything she could do not to laugh. She had a feeling it would only encourage him and if she was heading into battle, she needed her wits about her. “The Snakehole Lounge.”
“At the risk of sounding cliche, why would a nice girl like you want to go to a place like that?”
“I’m not a nice girl,” Emma informed him without a hint of irony or bravado. “And your rating is going down with each syllable out of your mouth.”
“Tough lass,” he murmured. “But do yourself a favor. Stay away from the Snake Juice.”
Little did he know that even if she wanted to have a drink, and boy did she ever, she used the last of her meager funds to get to this backwater place and she wasn’t sure where her next meal would come from. “I’ll do my best.”
The rest of the ride passed in silence. She spent the time looking out the window at the trees flying by and trying to ignore how every time she looked away, her eyes caught his in the rearview mirror.
Honestly, it was probably a good thing they were the only people for miles around or he would have gotten them both killed.
Less than fifteen minutes later, he pulled to the curb in front of a shabby nightclub. Even the multitude of neon lights flashing “Girls! Girls! Girls!” and “Half-Price Beer Buckets” did little to enliven the dingy exterior. They didn’t bother with a bouncer, probably because no one actually wanted to get in.
Before she could say anything, her driver was out of the car and rounding his way to her door. She didn’t have a chance to object as he opened it and looked at her with avid curiosity. She had to admit she was impressed he didn’t give into it and ask any questions.
“Since we’re out of the car, am I allowed to speak again?”
Perhaps she had been too hasty in her internal praise. “Thanks for the ride. I hope your next passengers are more chatty since that’s what you’re into...overall, a solid three stars.”
“Three stars? I’d be surprised, but I had a feeling you were warming up to me between the baleful stares and eye-rolling.”
Gifting him with another of the said eye rolls, she adjusted the hem of her skirt to show a little more leg and walked away. She knew if she stayed a second longer she would give in to the almost magnetic pull of him and say something foolish like, ‘What’s your name?’
The inside of the establishment was every bit as horrible as the outside. The low lighting obscured the grime and wear that would be glaringly obvious otherwise. She wasn’t surprised. It seemed like the kind of place Neal would gravitate to since he was a dirty little rat.
Music heavy with bass pumped out a rhythm entirely too fast for the energy of the place. The few patrons who persevered this far into the night looked anemic as tired dancers did their best to act like they wanted to be there. Pulling her ID from the scrap of a bra she wore under her dress, she flashed it at the lone employee who manned the entrance and the bar. He gave it a cursory glance and turned back to his phone.
Snapping her fingers under his nose to get his attention, she pulled out a grainy photo of her quarry from the same location and asked, “Have you seen this man recently?”
“I’ve never seen anyone. Ever.” The man grumbled, not interested in the slightest. She wondered if he would stop her if she walked behind the counter and helped herself to a drink. She was leaning toward no and tempted to try.
“Tell you what buddy, take a good look at this picture. Then look me in the eye and tell me you haven’t seen him and we’ll end the night without any trouble.”
Something in her tone must have penetrated his disillusionment and he gazed at her with more interest than he’d probably shown anything in years. She waited as he glanced at the photo for a few seconds. “No, sorry. If he’s been here, it wasn’t during any of my shifts. Is he your husband or something?”
“He’s something alright,” she muttered. Defeated, she turned around without another word. She used the last of her resources to fund a wild goose chase, but at least it got her into town. Only thing left to do was find a park or quiet bench somewhere safe to sleep for a few hours and then she would tackle whatever came next. It wouldn’t be the first time she roughed it, although she had never attempted it in formal wear before.
Pushing the door open with unnecessary force, she immediately froze. Her three star driver was waiting at the curb as if it wasn’t the middle of the night and she hadn’t given him the brush off.
“Fancy meeting you here.”
“Yes, especially since I’m pretty sure our business is done,” she replied, walking past him and wishing the man could be a tiny bit less handsome. Now that the streetlights of the small town were there to illuminate their interactions, she couldn’t deny he was ridiculously attractive and exactly her type, complete with a black leather jacket and messy hair begging to be pulled. And, heaven help her, he was determined to extend their acquaintance apparently.
“It’s just good sense, love. I figured you’d be in need of transportation again, so why waste the gas to leave when I’d have to turn around after you called for your next ride.” He matched his stride to hers as she did her best to increase her pace.
Sighing, she stopped at the corner and looked at him. “Listen, I could tell you my phone is dead and I need to make a few more stops, that I’d pay you when you drop me off at my place at the end of the night, but it would be a lie. I’m chasing down a bounty. I need the money to pay for a ride and I need a ride to make the money. A smart man like you can see the problem. Now, if you’ll excuse me…”
She turned away again but felt him leap into action behind her. He moved to cut off her escape and said, “Double or nothing.”
“I’m sorry, what?”
“Double or nothing, sweetheart. I take you to wherever you need to go tonight and when you collect your fee, you pay me double whatever the normal fare is for jaunts like these.”
“What if I don’t find him?”
“That’s where the nothing comes in, lass. A smart woman like you can see the benefit of such an arrangement.”
She studied him, hoping to find some ulterior motive in his seemingly selfless offer, but all she saw in his expression was an earnestness bordering on being painful and a thirst for adventure barely contained. Perhaps this was how he got his kicks in an isolated town. He propositioned strangers and gambled on fate. “No strings? No funny business?”
“This whole business is funny, but I’ll behave myself if you will. We’ll have much less satisfaction that way, but I’ll do my best to rally my spirits and overcome my disappointment.”
With a rueful shake of her head, she stuck out her hand and introduced herself. “I guess we’re doing this. I’m Emma Swan.”
“Killian Jones, driver extraordinaire and captain of this fine vessel, at your service. Where’s our next stop?”
“I need to go to every seedy bar and filthy dive in the area so you tell me, Captain.”
She wasn’t sure what it said about her newfound companion that he was able to rattle off several places in a matter of seconds, but as the night stretched on and the miles racked up, she found she rather liked her tour guide. Which was probably a good thing since at this rate, she would be splitting the bounty fifty-fifty with him. Who knew the twin cities of Storybrooke and Misthaven had so many sleazy places to hang out?
“I’m afraid we’ve reached the end of the line, Swan. Are you sure he’s in the area, because every traveler worth his salt makes a point to stop by Moe’s Tavern while visiting our fair city.”
“I can see why. The thrift-store ambience is delightful and the watered down drinks are to die for,” she murmured as she rested against the side of his car. She was tired and weak from hunger and as much as she wanted to curl up in the back seat and sleep, she was scared she’d get used to the comfort he was offering and do something she might regret later.
She was trying to figure out how to cut and run without seeming ungrateful when her stomach growled loudly.
In a playful tone belaying the concern in his eyes, he asked, “Was that your stomach? Bloody hell, am I in danger? Are you going to try to eat me to satisfy the beast within?”
Feeling a blush color her face, she avoided his gaze as she said, “Sorry, I...um, I skipped dinner.” And breakfast and lunch for that matter.
Taking up a position next to her, he nudged her with his shoulder. “Tell the truth, when was the last time you ate something, lass?”
“Hmm, what day is it again?”
“As I suspected. Come on, I know just the spot.” Pushing off from the car, he gently moved her and opened the door to the backseat.
She wanted to fight, to tell him she could take care of herself. She would have too, if she had any energy at all. Meeting his eyes for the first time, she joked, “You lost a gamble, Captain. That doesn’t mean you have to feed it.”
“I consider it an act of self-preservation. I figured you for a man-eater the first moment I laid eyes on you, but I’m afraid you might prove me right in unexpected ways if we don’t get some food in you soon.”
“As long as eyes are all you plan on laying on me, I accept your gracious offer,” she replied with a narrowed stare. Before Neal, she trusted her instincts. She would have insisted they were infallible, but he had shaken her confidence. She couldn’t risk being wrong about Killian Jones of the electric eyes and perpetual helpfulness.
“No strings. No funny business, Swan. Those are the rules. Get in, your chariot and dinner awaits.”
He stood a few feet from her, urging her into the car and she wasn’t sure what drove her to say it, but before she could change her mind, the words were out. “I’d rather ride in the front this time if that’s okay with you.”
His smile could have melted metal, tempted angels to fall, and inspired devils to repent. It was probably lack of rest and food causing her stomach to do flip flops. Or at least that was what she was going to tell herself.
“Your heart’s desire, Swan. I promise that’s all I want you to have…” He closed the back door with a firm finality that echoed through the night and somehow felt momentous in the thick air of summer. When he opened the passenger door, the light seemed warmer and it bathed him in softness and shadows. He waited patiently as if he knew something had shifted between them and he didn’t want any sudden movements to break the odd spell.
Then her stomach growled again, angry at the promise of food being delayed while she gawked at the man who was determined to rescue her in every imaginable way.
“And dinner, of course.”
“Of course,” she whispered, taking care not to make contact with his body as she slid into the seat. She was glad the door was already closed when she left out a huff of air. Good thing she had sworn off love or she may be in some danger.
