I finally wait till this day to watch Inside Llewyn Davis for the very first time and oh boy, I love it!💜
Not only the actors’ performances (Oscar!!✨) but how they interpret the ups and downs (mostly downs) of an artist and the emotions and psychological aspects of the character. It’s brilliant and not to mention the music! The music is typically the soul of the film. As I pretty enjoy folk music, this film is absolutely amazing to me. Introducing me to so many good songs.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Here’s my little thought/ review of the film:
First of all, the film perfectly (maybe not perfectly but almost) depicts the life of a frustrated/dejected musician struggling to get to the top of the music industry. I am no expert in the music/creative industry, but I think the theme itself and what they've shown on screen could definitely resonate with the general public. Even though the film is set in the 1960s, I reckon that lots of artists sometimes can feel the same frustration as Llewyn Davis feels when he's rejected by others for his music. So it doesn't matter what kind of era or industry you're in, the same circumstances can happen to anyone at any time.
Apart from that, Llewyn is an interesting character. He gets that artist's stubbornness, persistence and temperament and sometimes is even a bit selfish regarding what he's done to his friends and family in the film. But he doesn't seem to recognise that himself or he does recognise but doesn't try to improve.
I think most part of his anger and frustration towards others and his current situation, is mostly triggered by the death of his partner, Mike. He’s still grieving over the loss of his partner and friend. However, I do think a small part of it is also because of his personality. He seems like someone who’s hard to take other's advice. It’s really difficult for him to let go of his music career even when his life is in a miserable condition because it’s the one thing that he’s genuinely love, his love and soul.
Another thing is that he constantly gets himself into a situation where the opportunities are just right around the corner but constantly misses them. For instance, he gives away royalties for the song Please Mr. Kennedy session for a quick check. I would say his life is full of unlucky times and always leads him to some fuck up situations. Though he keeps trying and continue to find his place in the industry but no luck. I would say that’s his love for music makes him get through all these hardships.
That's why in the end, it happens to be the same circumstance, he's singing at the Gaslight like in the opening of the film. It's almost like a time loop. Nothing's changed even though we've seen many things happen during the film like him knowing he's got a secret child, hitchhikes to Chicago to find the manager but getting rejected. All things show that he’s a person who’s not in the right place at the right time.
Anyway, the whole film is awesome. I found it’s pretty funny for some of the scenes and made me laugh even though the protagonist is in a miserable state (and I shouldn’t). And Oscar? Brilliant as always. I love the way he showed the character’s struggles in life and how he’s actually still grieving over his partner in some of the little scenes through his emotions and acts. Overall, I’m just glad that I’d resisted the temptation to watch it online and wait till the movie day. 😆
P.S. Giving you a pretty Oscar and a cutie little cat. 🥰
