Live-read: The Wheel of Destiny #8, Kerubim.

You can find this article on the Dofus MMO's site, by simply googling it.

A bit of context: this is an article, from the series called "Wheel of Destiny," which focuses on small character studies of various ecaflip characters from the World of Twelve. I won't be doing all of them, just the ones that interest me.

It is my decision to start with this in particular, because of the relatively small size of the article, to test out this... reading liveblogs thing. I hope it goes well, and isn't too boring.

I hate Eca so much it's unreal, just so you know.

To make it more obvious which parts are me, and which parts are the article, while you're skimming the post, I turned on my computer's night mode for making screenshots.

...My sincerest apologies to tumblr's dark mode users, though. I'm sure this is a nightmare for you.

And this is what I was talking about in the previous posts, where I said that, canonically, Kerubim's friendship with Bashi started before the Quest of Two Mornings in Episode 3, Strich Hunt.

Very sad to disappoint, but there does not actually seem to be a Croc Ness monster in the Dofus MMO.

Yet another confirmation of the temple being situated in Amakna. (Besides my own geographical estimations while watching the show, and it literally being there in the Dofus MMO.)

It's a long ass way between the temple, and the swamp, but it is realistically doable for two kids, especially if they have a carriage. (Which Kerubim, being the guy responsible for feeding Ecaflip, does have access too.)

"Five-Cat Monte" is a reference to "Three-Card Monte" which is a real thing.

Glad to know Bashi is also very normal and sane as a kid. Also, very glad that older kids, who give lessons, react to things like this by essentially going "Sure, go die I guess."

God, they are so fucking stupid. Anyway, they are talking about some real landmarks here, all of which are also around Amakna, and seem to be pretty accurate to the in-game geography.

...It feels nice to be right.

...I suppose that, despite its faults, the orphan temple actually gives a shit about its disciples not dying. Color me surprised? Eh, I'm mostly joking. It would be very weird if they didn't.

I will spoil things ahead for you: Ecaflip used magic to make Kerubim look like Atcham.

Bashi's reaction to Atcham being "AAAAH NOT THAT FUCKING CREEPY KID AGAIN 😨". The way he pretty much says, "a ghost?? NO. SOMETHING SCARIER. YOUR WEIRD FUCKING BROTHER."

It all implies., So much. It implies so much. I'm still not over it.

I like to think that before they began to hate one another, Kerubim's relationship with Atcham was similar to what he had with Patafiks. Except instead of copying him, Atcham would, idk. Threaten to kill himself if he got any friend other than him? Threaten to kill his friends?

Something insane and jealousy-based like that.

I may be that guy who's very critical of Kerubim, and constantly going "Atcham's sad implied backstory this, Atcham's sad implied backstory that," but you don't get reactions like that by simply being extremely bullied.

You get reactions like that by being That Heavily Bullied Kid With 20 Mental Illnesses Who Attacks People With Sharp Objects.

Pictured: my rough theory of whatever the fuck happened between Kerubim and Atcham in the orphanage.

It is a funny image... that quickly wraps around back to being sad, once you think about little orphan Atcham, who people fucking hate for being a bingus, who has nobody except for his equally-orphaned brother (who doesn't look weird, can actually make friends, and leave him alone, if he wants to. Which he does.) and how at such a young age he got desperate enough to resort to what seems to be violence to protect himself.

Which got him absolutely no help. And also made people look down on him even further.

I think the funniest part of it all is that Atcham as an adult has:

1. The knowledge that hating Kerubim is literally not productive and a weird fucking coping mechanism.

Yet he keeps doing that.

2. A sort of moral compass that's all about protecting and respecting those in the same shit situation as him. (Even if they insult him. He hates that, but he's mature enough to uh.... just shave people against their will about it.)

While Kerubim is like. Still struggling with even saying that he doesn't even hate his brother. Somehow, he's the more emotionally constipated one.

So normal of them.

Anyway,

I think here we can see a bit of the internal growth Kerubim has had, from the time when he was a child, to adulthood.

Joris cannot picture Kerubim being ashamed, or disgusted, by Atcham, despite this article showing him doing exactly that.

It is the reason why I think one of the factors that contributed to Kerubim adopting, and keeping, Joris, was his guilt over whatever Atcham went through, despite how much he likes to say that he doesn't like Atcham.

Joris is different from other kids: small, weird, probably bald. And in any other situation, it's likely he'd develop a complex about it, except his dialogue in the movie specifically implies that Kerubim has put in conscious parenting effort into preventing exactly that.

While it's obvious that Kerubim loves Joris, there are many flaws in his parenting. So him putting a petabyte worth of effort and research into one single aspect of it is... very telling.

Now for a bit of a reach/headcanon: Who's to say that the reason Joris doesn't have many friends, is not Kerubim trying to isolate him from any potential source of shame or trauma? This part, as I've said, is purely speculation/headcanon — but it is an interesting thought.

And Atcham, who was there, and experienced shit like this from Kerubim, is still swayed by Joris's words.

What I think happened between them is that Kerubim, who yearns for societal approval, is afraid of being like Atcham, who is often ostracized and disliked by people for his looks. Besides this, I think Atcham, who was Going Through Horrors, was clingy.

For these reasons, he pushed Atcham away, and it is this betrayal, coupled with Kerubim's advantages in the form of not looking weird and being Ecaflip's favorite, that made Atcham fucking detest him.

What it all means is that Joris isn't necessarily wrong: Kerubim wouldn't hurt Atcham (at least, not unless it's self defense), and what he did was just... trying to save his own skin as kid.

Which isn't exactly malicious.

And I guess Atcham agrees with Joris on Kerubim's incapability of doing harm to him on purpose. Otherwise, he would never be convinced to change his mind.

There is probably a reason for why Kerubim would rather live in a forest, than go back to the temple looking like Atcham. And as I've said, I don't think it's a happy one.

Now think about Atcham doing this his whole life and get sad. Like I just did.

I think that, of all the things, it's most disgusting that whatever happened to Kerubim and Atcham was happening under the watch of Ecaflip, and perhaps even because of him.

I wouldn't put it past him to orchestrate their hatred for each other for fun. Or because he wanted Kerubim all alone, to himself.

I also find it interesting, the way Ecaflip says "once more" here. Implies that it used to be a normal thing for him. I suppose my guesses of Kerubim being disliked by other kids due to Atcham may have some merit.

And god, it makes me so, so sad.

He cares enough to intervene when Kerubim is about to die, which goes against his own rules, but not when it's about his kids' life being fucking awful.

...Maybe Oropo was right.

Do we know if Ecaflip's emotions are even genuine? He is the narrator of this story, after all, and he could be lying. He puts Kerubim in danger many times. Many. Just for fun and his own amusement.

I will take Ecaflip's narration as a straight-forward one, — that he really is feeling these things, but it still reads as manipulation, even if he is doing it for "Kerubim's sake". He's not a good father and never will be one, and these are very cruel lessons.

I will be real, their relationship disgusts me to my heart <3 Amen.

And now we know why Kerubim is... like that. And why his parenting is so overbearingly sweet, controlling, and obsessed with making sure Joris knows he adores him and adores him back.

Perhaps, despite everything, Atcham was the luckier one for not having Ecaflip's "love" the way Kerubim did, but honestly, I feel both of them had it equally shitty.

A true "would you rather sit on an anthill or sit on a cactus" choice.

So my controversial hot take about acosf, is that thanks to fan works (headcanons, theories, fanfic,etc) we all get these notions in our heads of how characters should be. When in actual reality they're just not like that. Everyone believed Nesta would be this all powerful bad bitch lady death. When in truth she never wanted power. Ever. All she wanted was to make the Cauldron pay. She never wanted magic in the first place. Even when she had it. She didnt care for it. Didnt care for what it did and how it took her over. In the end losing her magic didn't really matter. It's not like Aelin who loved her fire and missed it when it was gone. Nesta felt like her magic was a burden. And was grateful it was gone. I do think fmcs who love their powers should keep not lose them. But when they don't want it. When it scares them, they don't care for it whatever the case maybe then they should lose it. Nesta just wants cake, books, and sex no suffering magic required honestly good for her.

The same can be said for Cassian. Thanks to all the fan works we all believed he'd go to bat (pun intended) for her against Rhys and the IC and it rarely happened. Whenever it did, it barely lasted. I was waiting when Rhys told him to get Nesta out of Velaris or he'd kill her. I was waiting for Cassian to do something. What'd he do? Force Nesta to go on hike. Sir that's your mate. DEFEND HER. Tell Rhys for her sake you will but the next he threatens Nesta over something he shouldn't hide from Feyre will be the last. Get Nesta out and talk with her. Don't be dick cause Rhys says so.

Speaking of Rhys. Alot of people were unhappy with how he was portrayed in acosf. I wasn't. Doesn't mean he didn't piss me off. But I think for Manu the rose colored glasses came off. Acotar- acofas we view Rhys through the Feyre lens. So yeah especially acomaf and acowar we see him in a loving, caring sense. In Feyres eyes once she falls for him Rhys can literally do no wrong. As readers we believe it. It's why so many fell for Tam in book 1. But now in acosf we get him. The real un mate side of Rhys. We see the High Lord version. We see him through Cassian and Nesta’s eyes and it's not the best look.

The other issue I've noticed with Acotar fans and the hate is how slow and lore based it is. Yes, I agree that there's some parts of the book that are. So. Fucking. Slow. I just wanted to those parts to be done with it. The other side, the lore. For readers looking for smut and a little plot acotar is great. You don't have to think to much on the world and the lore it's only a sprinkle to move the story along. Nothing like tog or cc. Now with the crossover we needed a book with all this information to make it fit and have it make sense. And acosf became that book. For anyone who wasn't anticipating a heavy book this was a huge surprise. And kind of a snoozefest. Even when I first read it I was so happy to have this information but given what he know of acotar why Is it needed? Then hosab came out and it made sense.

Personally, I didn't think it was bad. I enjoyed myself while reading. I was disappointed we didn't get all those bodily fluids that Sarah claimed we'd get. Yeah, there was a little, but idk she made it seem like a lot more.

The intervention in the beginning pissed me off. The only people that should've been there were Feyre, Elain, and maybe Cassian. I know as someone who cares about her and is her mate he should he but in the same breath the topic of Cassian is very touchy to Nesta in that moment. So I think where he's considered it's a eh thing. Rhys would be the only other exception because it's his money she's been spending. But he should stfu and let Feyre handle it.

I don't like Mor. She pissed me off entirely throughout the book. Same as Amren. I use to like Amren alot. But this book made me turn off of her. Despite all of the growing Nesta does the only way she accepts and forgives Nesta is when Nesta grovels and kisses her hand??? Fuck right off.

Generally I loved all the lore, loved/hated seeing Rhys from a different pov, adored Nesta’s journey even her giving up her magic. I loved seeing Nesta form her bonds with Gwyn, Emerie and Azriel. Just wished Cassian stepped it up in the defending Nesta Archeron department.

I honestly think what I love about it. People hated lmao.

Sonya's Solo Story

For this I have nothing bad to say at all. I think Niime as a choice for someone for Sonya to talk to was a great idea, especially because they have a very similar history with the kind of magic that took away some of their family. Granted, the circumstances were Very Different, as is highlighted in the FB, but at least they have this to share in and research on together.

The Celica bit took me by surprise, I actually did not expect her to show up. However, I think it was also a good idea, seeing as Celica is probably the only person alive who has been turned into a witch and lived* to regain her true self. (*she did, however, have to die for it) Clearly, her circumstances were Special to say the least, but the fact it happened means saving a witch could be possible, perhaps even without the death part, they just have to keep looking. "The day I give up on trying to save my sisters is the day they truly die." Damn.

Mycen's Solo Story

It was nice to see FEH acknowledge that Alm was his own war tactician and is quite experienced and knowledgeable as a commander.

That said, we really could have done without Fjorm here beyond perhaps her role in being the player stand-in explaining Alm and Rudolf's beef if they hadn't played Gaiden/SoV.

I also feel it's a little odd of Rudolf to be avoiding Alm considering the Paralogue for Valentines literally ends on Alm and Rudolf trying to make amends and Talk (Celica pushing for it), and all of them going to the festival together. That said, it's not TOO odd, especially since this is a *different* Alm. It does feel like a bit of backpeddaling on the valentines event, though. Idk, I think this could have been elaborated more on.

Also, very silly of two old men to be arguing on who is responsible for Alm being who he turned out to be lol. No complaints on that, as much as it shows a little bit of what each other believes.

I do think it makes sense that Alm is a little sensitive about the patricide thing towards Rudolf and not Mycen simply because Rudolf in his world is already dead. There's no way to make peace with that, or amends with that. Mycen, however, is still alive. He probably already buried the hatchet with his adoptive grandfather by the point he got sent to Askr, so there's no need for sensitivity and hostility. To a point, anyways.

Anyway, mainly, all of this is minor 'eh... huh', my main issue is Fjorm being so prevalent in the story when it feels like she's just there to be a soundboard. Poor woman.

The FB Story Itself

I got jumpscared by the fact that it starts off ad verbatim like one of me and Bern's (@indumasname ) threads lol

I think the concept of the nothing, and the nightmares, is interesting.

Sonya's resolution with her own nightmares about being unable to save her sisters before she dies, and how they question her resolve, were touching and ended on a strong note. Very good stuff.

Mycen's, however...

That's the one I take issue with, of course, lol.

Mycen doesn't do anything to disprove what Alm and Celica say, he just speaks over them. Sure, they're nightmares, but they have a good point — he kinda threw two kids in a conflict he should have lead or at least could have assisted in.

In a way it felt more like writers trying to justify Mycen, but having no actual reasonable reason for him. Just "Well, he's right because they weren't shouldering it alone". Except adults around them forced them to take responsibility, and so did he, over a situation and world they had no hand in making at just 17.

It'd have felt more resolute if he had faced the children he harmed and admitted they're right, he DID put them in that situation. Maybe they weren't alone, but he set them on a path that forced them to grow up and suffer when they were barely adolescents, because he believed there was no other way to end the reign of the Gods. He believed in the prophecy, and while it worked out, they suffered for it. That would have at least felt like he was answering what the nightmares said… not just speaking over them and ignoring what they said. In a way, it made Mycen look like he constantly avoids the responsibility of what he did to those kids, and the writing put him in the right for it.

Caesar Route Chapter 12 (6-10)

Last time on the Caesar Route, everybody got very close to finally finding the Star Sapphire, and then Caesar died.

Nevermind, he just turned into a pig, I guess. Wait, who the hell did he kiss? Apparently nobody, according to the narration.

I guess this is supposed to clue us into Caesar becoming only an animal, not a human inside an animal, but I guess the route forgor that Liz’s special ability is literally talking to animals.

Nevermind, it looks like the route did not forgor, although it doesn’t really make sense for her to not understand Caesar just because she’s only at half magic power. From my understanding, she could just... do that. Idk, guess it’s weird for me to expect magic to act like anything less than what is convenient for the plot, y’know?

Slight tangent here, okay, but why the fuck is Lucious in all these CGs? Like, is it the fucking Lucious route? Wait your turn, budders. I swear, all these new routes just include fucking whoever in their CGs. Remember that one where Hiro was straddling Caesar and Liz was in the corner like she was the live slug reaction?

Ah, simpler times.

Anyway Lucious drops some previously unmentioned Baroque lore in that the curse slowly turns Baroques into pigs permanently and their spirit gets trapped in the Labyrinth, so I guess we just found out who all the shadows are. 

Idk man this still just makes you look like a huge asshole since you didn’t help a guy who was going to turn into a literal pig just because he didn’t tell anybody about that stipulation of the curse. 

It honestly seems like the least harmless of Caesar’s lies. Sure, it’ll hurt people emotionally and it was kind of a dick move to keep it from Liz, since he claimed he was in love with her, but considering his whole thing with Zett, it’s hardly the most dangerous lie in the mix.

So that’s the big twist of the route, I guess. Woo.

Liz starts crying and realizes she’s in love with Caesar because reasons. She kisses the pig’s snout, but surprise! Nothing happens.

WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE? And what the hell is everyone else doing? Are they just sitting there, watching this, without saying a single thing??

Then Zett of all people fucking shows up, claiming he can do something to help Caesar and Liz just,,,,, believes him. Without even asking questions. I mean I get it’s a dire situation, but geez..

Zett uses the Potion of Plot Convenience to somehow undo everything that just happened to Caesar and return him to human form. Liz is at first relieved to see him back to human form, then is pissed over everything he kept from her, and rightfully so tbh!

Zett gets butthurt over not getting any gratitude or attention, at which point Caesar thanks him and Zeus finally remembers how to open his mouth again (oh well, it was fun while it lasted), and everyone remembers that Zett is supposed to be imprisoned right now, which means he broke out.

Zett casually mentions that he let himself be caught (mmHM) and that it was all part of the plan. Mischa suggests that Caesar stop fucking lying, and he agrees.

Before I end today’s segment, I just want to take a moment to talk about some stuff. I know that I’m harping on Caesar a lot this route for some of his less than stellar choices, and I’ve been getting on Lucious’s case a lot, and Hugo’s bullshit is really ambiguous, and also Shithead (no other words are needed for that one). But I want to briefly talk about the main villain of these past few routes: the Day King. 

Like okay, your daughter falls in love with some dude you don’t really like. Whatevs. It’s a fictional dad rite of passage. It’s gonna happen to all of you. And I’m sure your response to it is totally normal and healthy. Oh wait, no it wasn’t. It was to throw him into a magical labyrinth and curse him to be trapped there for all eternity. And do you pay the price for that? No, of course not, the entire price had to be paid by all the descendants of the noble house that either helped you or you stole their magic, or whatever the arrangement was, because it feels like the wording keeping changing.

Anyway, fuck the Day King, all my homies hate the Day King.

thoughts on the new Wasp issue? The whole thing where they were in a world where hank never existed was pretty interesting or could've been I think & nadia having to become an assassin instead of being able to evade it due to them wanting her to work on her father's research makes sense kind of except that it's weird she didn't try to escape? idk it's not like anyone else broke her out or redeemed her or anything so it's a little weird. The thing with janet I did not like because her wanting to avenge her father's death makes sense & she found a way to do it without becoming the wasp (weird thing to happen in the only solo series she has though) which is realistic but the avengers being "a group of operatives who are specialists in their respective fields" doesn't really capture the magic of how they assembled in the first place to me... also what do you think janet is a specialist in? also what did the hulk specialise in lol? I also don't like ewing's voice for janet.

i think it's a marked improvement from the first two issues but i won't lie, i'm still not convinced. there's two major problems i have with it so far; first of all, it feels incredibly drawn out n poorly paced. we have one issue left and i still feel like the conflict is yet to actually happen in the comic, which is suprising considering how well-paced the rest of ewing's projects are, even just thinking about storm and the brotherhood which came out on the same day but especially compared to ant-man. it's possible the final issue will change my mind, but it so far feels like something that could have been done in two issues and probably would have been better off for it.

second; this isn't a janet book, simple as. it would not surprise me in the slightest if i found out that this was originally a vague plot for nadia, and then ewing awkwardly placed janet in it afterwards when marvel asked him for a sister series to ant-man. janet has not done anything interesting and i have learned literally nothing new of her character so far, except that apparently she is smart enough to sort out the whole alien thing on her own without hank n without being the wasp. i guess.

i guess i'm just missing what made the ant-man series fun. i'm not expecting a clone, but the shifting tones between the classic 60s vibe and more contemporary comics and the sleaziness of early 2000s comics really suited the tone and made me think a lot about how hank and the legacy of ant-man has changed over the years. janet's missing all of that fun vibe, and it just doesn't feel like the kind of homage to janet van dyne and the wasp mantle you would expect from an anniversary issue. it feels like a forgotten arc of the jeremy whitley unstoppable wasp run.

anyway nadia as an assassin was fun, n made sense! her not having someone to look up to and make her inspired to be heroic and becoming a star assassin is a fun beat, it's interesting that without that she never tried to leave but i suppose it makes sense. janet as "the avenger" is interesting, but i'll be honest i'm still waiting on janet to feel like janet. there's no reason why without hank she would stop being fun and flirty and a bit of an adrenaline junkie. like, in avengers origins: ant-man and the wasp she feels like a distinct person, but those traits are still there. i dunno.

anyway i hope the last issue is good, but i really do feel the pacing is off and the characterisation of janet especially feels a bit weird. it's not that he can't write janet; issue one of ant-man jan was great! it's just that it feels like in a need to show janet is mature and an adult he's squeezed a lot of her out n i'm not vibing with it unfortunately :(

(also this might sound awful of me to say but i think janet would have been more likely to become a villain without hank, because it's really on the avengers as a team member where she learns a sense of responsibility and maturity IMO. her father dying gave her a sense of injustice, but if you ask me it's growing as a team where she really grows as a person. before then she's very much so still a privileged upper class girl with an adrenaline problem, and i can't help but think it would be both fun and make sense for her to be a campy fashion themed supervillain. but that's just me)

13. what are some motifs you associate with them? did you intentionally bring in those motifs, or did it happen over time?

the whole snow and ice and fur thing was pretty intentional but i have leaned into it more than i necessarily expected to. the precise, complex fractal patterns that you get from snowflakes or ice on windowpanes is what i think of most especially. she's started developing just a little bit of a wolf motif in my head too which i did not expect but do like a lot and should lean into more.

21. do they have an idea about how they’ll die? do you?

yeah, she thinks that knight guy who stabbed her when she was in the necklace is going to kill her. classic bit of hubris, she sort of thinks nothing in the dungeon COULD kill her other than the powerful memory/dream knight. i am decently optimistic about her survival, but think that if she is gonna die it'll be because we get surprised or ambushed in a small space. this party is so weak to ambushes and deprived of my ability to get around the corner? yikes. fortunately with arcis i've finally built a character where pretty much any death she can have is poetic and satisfying. any death is dying for her goals!

38. do they see themselves as an important part of their party?

yes. next question.

44. what lies do they tell others?

she really doesn't lie that much! she talks up her/her party's competence and importance a bit, but also she does think quite highly of herself and them. she makes promises that she's not sure she can keep, but then she does TRY to keep them. i think maybe the biggest direct lie so far was how absolutely she intends to fuck over the rat king at the first opportunity. and the whole prospero situation.

sob. so much of it. the biggest one i have trouble with is that she's much more callous about human lives than she should be, which occasionally trips me up in roleplay scenes--i have SO much trouble being arcis talking to uoser, and idk what i'm gonna do if she ever has to interact with the master's hands. she's not totally heartless, but she just sort of puts "number of people who might die" as one factor that she weighs along with all the others

i feel like “blood” and “bones” can’t count as motifs but those. and then there are the ones that come automatically with being a cherry tree person, leaves and blossoms and cherries and wood and all that. lightning i did on purpose from when i built her spellbook, but i think it only sort-of worked--she should have just been a fire character, but we were already cursed so i was trying to get away from it. in the crop novelization she’ll have fire magic. although really her most aesthetically correct spell was guiding bolt imo--there was something going on with silver light as a motif, which was accidental, just out of a contrast to cami’s gold. but like, moonlight, starlight, etc was definitely SOMETHING. i also associate her a lot with clear water and with rain.

no to both, honestly. she was very suspicious about praise, either assuming someone wanted something from her or just dismissing it because of her own self-hate. she only liked/accepted it when she could take it as “oh this is something that makes me valuable to others, got it”. and criticism just made her double down alskjdflskjdf she’s too stubborn

59. what’s an element of their philosophy that you disagree with? 

yikes! she was Not in fact responsible for the safety of every single one of the sorcerers--or like, she was, but she did that to herself, she didn’t have to. she also had this reverse ends justify the means, where if bad things happen because of what you do you were wrong to do what you did, thing going on and i don’t necessarily agree with that either.

60. what do they have faith in? what keeps them believing? 

a better place! in the middle of everything there was always just that sliver of a chance that she could be free and safe again and she held onto that shred of possibility like a lifeline, with a ferocious and stubborn determination to keep believing it existed. she also really believed in the Arborean people--this is why she trusted Papaye, why she trusted Esme, why she was holding onto hope for the god queen so late in the game, why she could have had SUCH a dynamic with the crimson knight if she knew what went down in uberta. even affected the way she was about the sorcerers--she believed that they wouldn’t betray her or turn on her, she believed that they could survive and heal and adapt and do their part to make what she was doing mean something. her late-campaign arc always would have involved standing on behalf of the Arborean people even as she did everything she could to take Salic down.

61. is there an in-game moment of theirs you think about and just laugh?

that one first roadtrip scene when cami and cerise were trying to figure out what the hell was up with auberon’s antlers! a bit ooc for her but also. it was really funny and makes me smile.

Honestly felt the need to write some of my own Tav headcanons and throw it into this void XD.

The Baldur's Gate 3 brainrot is rooted deep you guys (Honestly partly it's to cope that my DnD group, including me, are quite busy and I miss playing the game).

Next post would be about Gale x Tav/Maeve so this post doesn't get too long 😅

(Also I have never had tumblr so idk the etiquette here or really how this works so I'm going to be playing around and see what sticks)

Ok now onto some self indulgent hc.

• Maeve Derevar. A wood half-elf abjuration wizard who dabbles in faith (She would be an artificer, but I settled with the guild artisan background...begrudgingly).

• Dipped one level in tempest cleric to not only get that heavy armor prof, but also to fuck with Mystra because this wizard trusts in one god and that's not her.

• With the cleric dip out of the way, her motivation to learn abjuration is mostly because of her family, especially little sister.

• I imagine there was an accident that her sister never really recovered from when they were young teens. Maeve had a troublemaker streak until that point (naturally she's a brunette, but dyed her hair red which didn’t help her appear less mischievous).

• Mom is human ranger, dad is an wood elf druid. They were quite surprised to learn that their daughter wanted to pursue arcane magic.

• They still supported her because with this character I wanted a healthy family dynamic.

• To channel Maeves boundless energy as a kid her dad introduced her to the great world of arts and crafts, then taught her wood carving and later potion making.

• Because nothing can go wrong when you give a hyperactive kid a knife and unintentionally the desire to experiment with possibly poisonous plants (no worries, she got all the safety lectures).

• These activities were done outside Baldurs Gate to not only connect with nature, but also just bond as a family first and foremost (anything dangerous was excluded).

• They have a small shrine dedicated to Corellon Larethian so she had always assumed that he's the real god of magic until she learned who actually created it.

• Doesn't really have a hubris, but a major savior complex. The tadpole situation didn't make it better with her taking leadership responsibility and keeping everyone in check so a murder doesn't happen (among other things like two companions having two different ticking time bombs in their chest).

• The half-elf already had anxiety, but this really tested her ability to keep calm under the pressure of the world ending if they fail (had a couple of of mental breakdowns behind the scenes).

• Safe to say she can be a bit of a perfectionist and that also came into her studies.

• Finished college with the desire to explore more ancient protective magic and possibly improve already existing spells.

• Maybe not improve, but ✨evolve✨ (🎶here comes the hubris doo-doo-doo-doo🎶).

• I think the tadpole incident happened when she's in her late twenties or early thirties.

Oh oh right. So, uh Barthanes has the horn. That’s what the heist is for. It is a literal heist. I mean, this book has almost everything. We got to a heist, we started with an adventure novel, survival, several other things, and now also a heist. I probably should have mentioned -or tbh realized- this earlier. 

Oh right the giant ass buried statues. Which are apparently the largest of the sa’angreal which can be used by channelers and seem very powerful. The one we’ve seen can only be used by men. There’s two in total. Hmm… I’m sure they couldn’t be important at all. The womens one is on Tremalking. Wherever that is. Apparently they were created as weapons which were never used. So. Probably not important at all. /s

I am sure rn Rand is terrified but this is overpowered by him suspecting the ancient statutes are (somehow) part of the plot to control him and still trying to convince himself he is not the Dragon. Mmm mmm nope. This is all part of the plot to frame him as a false dragon. Nothing else. 

Well what a relief they must be used in tandem to Break the World but one wonders how much damage they could do alone?! /s (the big ass sa’angreal)

… you need to be very powerful to use them. Whose that powerful? No *widely* known man, and several women including Moiriane. No worries until the Dragon proclaims himself. *stares off into the distance suspiciously close to Rand* surely no Aes Sedai would help with that tho right? (Yes sure Verin. Wait did she lie…? No… no I think not)

Perrin, Rand knows less than you think you do. By far. And you admit to not knowing much. I mean technically Rand knows a lot, but tbh I feel like he’s too in denial to actually use that information. 

Another great chapter. Bands back together. Verin is here. They are going to do a heist in a nobles house for the Horn which rests on Rand’s shoulders, and his impeccable half-hated new wardrobe of three very nice coats. More letters were burned. Everyone is loosing it a little bit imo. Absolute a+’s all around.

hope things are going great for you and your family in this holiday season! btw thank you so much for my christmas present (flux 48) I cherished it a lot 🧡. there were so many great moments in the chapter and it's kinda hard to choose the right words to describe them.

ok let's start with the fact that I literally cried when eomma called sasha daughter. idk why I felt it so hard, but that and jk trying to ease sasha's burden made me really emotional.

also, his cousin tae-ri?????? what a btch!!!! ok, I know sasha tends to look at the situations through scarred glasses, but tae-ri's whole demeanor seemed focused on making sasha uncomfortable (maybe I do the same thing as sasha).

lastly, sasha calling him gukka 😭😭😭😭 it was too much for my poor little heart!! I already weep every time she calls him koosha, this was a low blow. (and his cousin saying he confirmed jks dating rumors had me laughing on the floor)

I have no idea where the last chapter will leave us at, but I will wait for it hoping for the best (or whatever your magical mind has in store for us).

I'm so glad you're feeling the emotions of all these chapters haha they are steeeeped in levels of emotion! The daughter reference in particular is one that demonstrates that cultural difference: to Koreans, that would be the appropriate thing for Eomma to call her son's serious girlfriend who had had introduced to her, but to Sasha/non-Korean readers, it reads as really important --and it is really important! Just like misunderstandings can cause problems, they can also sometimes fortuitously work in a good way: ie, Sasha feeling more pulled in than maybe Eomma even intended.

I definitely write these chapters bunkered down in Sasha's and Jungkook's close thoughts, so I'm really glad you pointed out how that could impact our reading of Tae-ri. I'm exhuberant as always at the responses to her so far. There's so much in our way of understanding what she's really about. Hopefully a little more will get exposed next chapter 😉

The last chapter very likely will get broken into two HAHA probably not surprising at all. So probably 3 more to post, but one is ready to edit and post and that should happen probably early next week! <3

GLADLY ok so i think that leigh bardugo is a clever writer i think she really knows how to use words and language in a way that’s poetic to read everything sounds nice which is something u don’t even realize u enjoy while reading. i also think she’s great at writing character interactions which can distract you from that fact that at the end of the day the plot is boring and overdone and full of holes. and also that most of her characters aren’t actually fully fleshed out and they do things that don’t actually make sense for their arcs because she’s insistent on fitting in a bunch of ur classic YA tropes. people will argue up and down that kaz and inej are different from ur typical “good girl has to fix the scary bad boy who mistreats her” but like when u boil it down that is what they are. its weird that kaz is portrayed as a sort of savior that inej is indebted to and it’s especially weird when you remember that he’s a white boy and she’s a brown girl. and yes i know that the book tries to pull a “he’s not her savior and she’s not responsible for fixing him” but the issue is that it fails at this. it SAYS this shit but it doesn’t actually happen it doesn’t actually work it makes no sense for inej to be with kaz she deserves so much better. ive got major issues with kaz and inej’s relationship that could be its own post. matthias as a character is a whole other story i still think that was such a horrible choice whyyy are you trying to make us sympathize with a guy who supports and took an active role in genocide i understand that people can change even when they’ve done unspeakably bad things but frankly i’m not interested in hearing their sob stories and i think putting so much energy into redeeming a character like matthias is weird and was a bad move. and putting him with a girl who is A PART OF THE GROUP OF PEOPLE HE WANTS TO KILL? yeah that was not a good idea. like in no way was this a good idea nor was it salvageable you can do enemies to lovers without doing shit like that. frankly the only romantic relationship that was handled well was jesper and wylan but surprise surprise they have the fewest moments and least development. every time kaz and inej or matthias and niña would interact i was like ughhhh. literally every other relationship was more interesting. i also don’t think the grisha world is that unique it’s just another “made up fantasy world with made up countries where people have magical powers” this has been done a million times before. the characters are in a gang they go on a heist this is nothing new. the girls are responsible for fixing their shitty love interests this is also nothing new. frankly i’m not even that impressed with the way trauma was portrayed and i say this as someone with ptsd it was just okay. it wasn’t anything mind blowing. overall: soc is just… alright. it’s every other YA novel you’ve ever read only it’s written by an author who has a fun writing style and is better at writing character interactions than the average YA author. it’s got a lot of problems too. there are some questionable and outright ignorant writing choices. it’s overrated. it’s a shitty boring salad and you’re trying to save it with really good salad dressing. idk
