so I thought I had beaten Alter Echo as a kid, but I'm pretty sure I actually just gave up on what I thought was the final boss fight - and what is, in fact, not even CLOSE to the final boss fight, because the final boss fight is a series of like 6 fights in a row where the game suddenly goes from "holds your hand the entire game telling you when your weapons aren't effective and what form you should switch to to defeat a particular enemy" to "giant facehugger thing with only 1 weakness that you have to figure out entirely on your own (which is "use two different forms to combo on a certain kind of enemy and throw that enemy at a certain part of the boss during a certain time frame". BTW), then a bunch of other gimmicky bullshit like having to rapidly switch forms to block 3 different types of attacks, shuffled at random. it then culminates in a fucking RHYTHM GAME where the main bad guy launches some energy ball at you and the two of you literally just volleyball it back and forth faster and faster until you win.
and then you're rewarded with what has to be the most ridiculous Bad Guy Killing Scene i've ever seen in my life. seriously im begging you to please watch this scene it just keeps going and going and going HE'S ALREADY DEAD (TW FOR FLASHING LIGHTS)
overall still a really solid game. 7/10 I'd say. Without save states though I definitely would've been chucking it out the window lmao

Been going through season 6 of Rick and Morty (don't laugh) after not realizing it had released throughout 2022. I've never been more than a passive fan of the show since being introduced to it in middle school by a friend when it first came out, but despite its criticism and notorious reputation it honestly always had a bit of a sentimental place in my heart. Like, watching it throughout the years yeah it's not exactly the best show ever but I guess it's just one of the few things i've somehow managed to pretty consistently follow along since its beginning. Anyway, I'm really surprised by how much I'm enjoying this season. Especially with the notable decline in season 5... I remember finishing like 90% of its episodes not being able to even pity list a good quality about it. But every episode of season six has honestly been able to impress me in some way. Maybe I've just become a bigger sucker for stupid smartass humor and sci-fi tech animation but I really did find every single episode really fun to a very embarrassing amount. I don't know how to describe it but I feel like the season also exemplifies a sort of "sweet spot" the show has been able to find in itself. The biggest critiques of the show are undeniably its reliance on metahumor and the inconsistencies of the capabilities of Rick, but something about s6 makes these elements "work" to me in some way that that wasn't able to be done in s5. Sure, it's still lazy but it didn't take away from my enjoyment like the last season did. Anyway, I just wanted to put my thoughts out since I'm wondering if any other people felt the same way?

my entry for @dribbonart's Amedot Fusion Contest - Zoisite!
Zoisite (Zoey) is a gem fusion slightly shorter than Garnet. Her predominant gimmick is insufferable curiousity, she likes to stick her nose in everything, especially related to interpersonal relationships. She likes watching shows, and has an ability to consume any media at 3x speed (or even faster!).
When stabilised, she chose to have a form that resembles a traditional mad scientist-esque villain, just for fun. Zoey is not as good at shapeshifting, but she enjoys it when she is able to morph into one of her favourite shows' characters.
Her weapon is an electric whip, fitting the mad scientist theme. She also uses any metal junk she could find in fight. And her second arms are stretchy and pack quite a punch!

Sorry if youve answered this before, but how do you chose the bugs to assign to each character ? Also they are all really cool and fun :3
Hi, I’ve explained this before but I’ll do it again! Last time I explained it was less specific to the character and more to the caste, so this’ll be a little different. I use the metaphors and associations of the insect to pick their species as well as their diet. I’m calling the species a troll mimics their ‘morph’.
Aradia: Fly. Associated with death. Detritivore. Tavros: Craneflies. Frailty, timidness, clumsiness. Thinking longhorn beetle might be a funnier pun though, so I might change it. Herbivore. Sollux: Bees. Construction, intelligence, connections to groupthink/hiveminds/psi. Herbivore. Nepeta: Caterpillar. It’s a pun. Herbivore. Karkat: Isopod. Highly social insect. Durable shell representing defensiveness/personal barriers, but also serving literal aspect of ‘thick skin.’ Detritivore. Kanaya: Hornet. Dangerous but caring parents, association with femininity. Omnivore. Terezi: Dragonfly. Good eyesight’s associated with clarity, though large eyes would also be easier to blind. Good at flying. Dragon pun. Carnivore. Vriska: Spider. Manipulative, association with femininity. Carnivore. Equius: Beetle. Strong. Omnivore. Gamzee: Praying mantis. Associations with religion due to unique praying pose. Carnivore. Eridan: Anolomacaris. Extinct skilled distance hunter. Carnivore. Feferi: Trilobite. Large curved spines, trident tongue, ‘ruler of precambrian seas.’ Detritvore.
All insects before Jade are herbivores or detritivores, and all insects jade and after are middle to highblood can hunt. This was to set up an intentionally antagonistic relationship between lowbloods and highbloods. It’s also a new way to play with themes in my personal work which are all about animal dynamics.
I mostly did the human kids as bugs as a joke, because they’re not aliens at all so its funny!! But I had a ton of fun with them so here we go again. I chose them off colors and gimmicks.
John: Spitbug. They’re bright green and gooey boys. Like ectoplasm. Rose: Rosy maple moth. Name association—also bright pink and yellow against their will. Rose wishes she was a cool goth all-black moth. Moths are associated with ‘seeking light.’ Dave: Assassin beetle/wheel bug. Have a gear shaped bump on back, large black eyes, efficient predators, some red coloration. Fits in with his expectations and pressures. Jade: Wooly aphid. They’re white, fuzzy, with rainbow wings. That’s so her.
Jane: Candy-striped leafhopper. Bright cyan with red highlights, food-themed name.Roxy: Pink-spotted cattleheart. Gorgeous pink and black coloring. Butterflies are nectar-drinkers, associated with celebration and inebriation. Kinda clumsy too. Dirk: Tiger beetle. They can move in bursts of motion faster than they can see. That’s flash stepping. Orange and black. Jake: Diving beetle. Dark green with orange highlights, explorers who go where other beetles cannot.

Hi Betts! <3 Can you tell us more about your craft process on how you pick a voice for a piece? I usually start plotting a story when I see or read something that makes me think, "That. That's what I want." But often I struggle to translate that feeling into a particular narration style, especially something that feels doable for more than 20k.
ah, you've touched on the most important and most difficult-to-articulate part of my writing process.
so first i want to say that you never *have* to change your voice or style. i would say most writers basically only use one voice, theirs, and they stick to it. if you're happy with the way you're writing, don't feel obligated to switch it up because you think you have to have major variation in that regard.
however, voice is pretty integral to my writing. if i can grasp the voice of a character, i know everything about them. there's minimal conscious invention in my characters. they have a voice and therefore they exist more or less fully formed, and could become the protagonist or narrator of their own story. in fact this sometimes bites me in the ass, because when i find a new character, i always want to switch into their POV. and that makes whatever i'm working on longer and more complicated, when i'm trying to keep it short and simple.
when i say "voice" i don't mean it as some fancy craft term. i mean i can actually hear their voice in my head. that's something they don't put in the welcome packet when you get diagnosed with a psychotic disorder. a lot of people assume "hearing voices" means audio hallucinations, but it can actually just mean harboring the inner monologue of other people in your head, knowing it's nothing more than cognitive ventriloquism. if you have this capability, congratulations. you have a mild positive psychotic symptom extremely conducive to creativity. if you don't, a lot of what i'm saying probably doesn't make any sense.
there's a lot of overlap between high creative output and what i call diet coke psychosis. as in, you may have all the flavor of a psychotic disorder (creativity!) and none of the calories (the agonies).
so how do i find new voices? actors.
when i binge the filmography of an actor, it's to appease an obsession, yes, but there's also a creative practicality to it, in that they can often serve as the foundation of a new voice. it usually begins with simple facecasting (which is another thing not everyone does), but often morphs a step beyond that, where you have the actor's real voice playing a character you've created. and then that, after months or years or tens of thousands of words, eventually develops into a whole-ass new person. and once you have that, you can add that voice to your roster and toss them into other stories.
in addition to filmographies, i also binge actor interviews. seasoned actors have developed a persona, so they have an ample filmography but their interviews are less useful. but actors who are fairly new and don't have many titles under their belt yet have no idea how to be famous, and that's where the gold is.
i also owe a lot to gimmick interviews like when actors have to answer questions while being attacked by puppies. no one can maintain a persona when puppies are crawling all over them.
you know how when you're around someone long enough you can pick up their mannerisms? and you know how sometimes you can daydream about being interviewed for no apparent reason? my process of finding a voice is a combination of those things. maybe i'm making it more complicated than it is. maybe it's more common than i'm giving it credit for. but it's very difficult to consciously describe unconscious processes.
a lot of writers base characters off of people they know. i actively try not to do that, not because i think it's wrong but because it's going to happen anyway, and if i push that instinct away, what bleeds in is what i can't keep out, and what i can't keep out is what needs to be there. so every voice is an actor playing the character of someone who was once very dear to me. (i almost never create characters based on people actively in my life.)
and, of course, i have to put a piece of myself in each character too. i have to find some personal connection, usually a question i have about myself and my life that i think only they can answer through the course of their journey. i have to be curious about them. what do we have in common? what don't we have in common?
as to your question about sustainability over 20k, one challenge i've given myself these past couple years is the way a character changes and develops over decades or maybe their entire life. a voice doesn't always have to be consistent, especially if your story takes place over a long time. in some cases whatever a voice turns into over the course of a story is just the way it needs to be, but sometimes you have to pull a "he wouldn't fucking say that" and go back to shuffle sentences around a bit.
i also think a lot of what i'm saying applies mostly to dialogue and first person. i consider first person basically a very long monologue, whereas i think third person i think has a lot more elasticity, and you can move around more easily in the closeness and distance of narration. i think that elasticity is what makes third person more comfortable for a lot of writers.
voice is a big thing deployed in a little way. it's the difference between "don't have" and "haven't got." it's whether they're more conducive to ending thoughts with a hard stop or connecting them with "and." but it's also in the lies they tell themselves to get by, and what they think the conflict is versus what the conflict really is, and maybe what they're trying to persuade us of. a voice is inherently rhetorical.
i hope some of this makes sense. and because this has gotten long, i've provided some examples from my novel in progress, rabbit's blood, under the cut!
i open the novel in third omniscient, which i absolutely hated because it's antithetical to everything i've described here, but it got the job done. whether i'll keep it through to later drafts remains to be seen.
On November 9, 1951, Mary Mills goes into labor. Her husband Duke is not present. She hasn’t seen him since she announced to him that she was pregnant with twins. In Duke’s stead, her oldest son Wyatt, four years old, waits at her bedside to meet his brothers. Wise beyond his years, he understood immediately that his father had abandoned them. After these past several months watching his mother’s grief and fear and anger rise as she slowly came to accept the truth, he vows now to dedicate his life to doing the right thing.
after this, the twins are born, skip and birdie. in subsequent chapters, we move into first person.
here's birdie at 60ish years old in the present. he's spent the past 10 years driving around the country robbing banks with his daughter mel.
It took us a long time to realize robbing tellers was a stupid idea. Tellers only ever have a couple thousand in their drawers. Not even worth it to go in guns blazing, get all the money from all the drawers and hold everybody hostage until the vault opens. One, that’s mean. Two, the vault might not have much either. On a bad day, you’ll walk away with ten, twenty grand, meanwhile half a dozen people are going to be traumatized for life, and if you get caught, your ass is in jail for a minimum of seven years. The government doesn’t give a fuck about banks losing money, but they get real angry when you put a gun in somebody’s face. That is, unless they’re the ones who gave it to you.
here's birdie reflecting on the past and falling in love with mel's mother, anita.
I’d gotten good at following her orders, so when she said, “Kiss me,” I said, “Yes, ma’am,” and I did. It was sweet at first, which made me think she was shy, that maybe this was her first kiss, but that didn’t last long. Passion wasn’t something I’d ever associated with myself and definitely didn’t associate with her, but we brought it out in each other alongside all the other dark and wild things.
this is birdie's son johnny reflecting on how much he hates his father. he's 30ish in the present timeline.
For my entire life my father had a goatee like the devil and blond hair that had turned mostly white by the time he was forty. He was thin, wiry, had the defensive posture of a surly teenager smoking outside of school. Mom, Mel, and I all looked alike, but Birdie looked like some guy who’d just wandered into our house.
and here's mel, also 30s, in the present. birdie has decided to part ways with her and this is the aftermath, where mel hooks up with a showgirl and takes her to breakfast the next morning.
Sara and I have breakfast at the Denny’s on the Strip which is maybe my favorite Denny’s in the country, and that’s saying something. I ask her lots of questions about microbiology, and to be polite she asks me some questions too, about my occupation and where I’m from and all that, but I evade them because she’s not really interested in my answers and I’m not interested in giving them. She’s twenty or twenty-two or something like that and that means she just wants to be the center of somebody’s attention, somebody she thinks is bigger than her, and that’s something I can offer.
some things to note:
in the first excerpt, you'll notice a lack of contractions. that's because it's just my voice and i don't use a lot of contractions. because neurodivergence i guess, i don't know. there's also a higher register here, which you can tell by the variation of the sentences and the position of the clauses.
i based birdie off my father but birdie's voice isn't my dad's voice. that said, my dad was a habitual lecturer and so birdie is prone to Explaining Things. he also lobs off subjects of sentences sometimes and because he's spent his life running from the law, he's somewhat defensive and that comes out in a kind of aura of persuasion.
he's much more forthright when reflecting, and i think that can be found in the facts he's putting down over the opinions he offers in the present. when reflecting, he's much more vulnerable.
as far as johnny goes, i'm still working on him. i dragged him over from a different project and i'm reworking him. in the other project, he was extremely jaded and cold, and his narration style was direct and somewhat distant. some of that will carry over, but i also want to make him slightly more pathetic and immature.
mel is very reluctant to end sentences, so i try to keep them going for as long as i can. she also rambles, has a good sense of humor, and is extremely intelligent.
okay i've worked way way way too long on this, so i'm just going to hit post and hope it offers a little insight. also, happy to talk more about rabbit's blood and my process of writing it if anyone is interested.

About the Transgender Agenda…
When it comes to evil, few things beat the mental abuse and physical mutilation of children and youngsters that we are witnessing. It is evil to the core and there are no two ways about it.
Mentally messing up a child by making them reject the most fundamental of human considerations; our biological denomination, is sick and twisted and demonic.
The Transgender Agenda is not about gays, lesbians or bisexuals, who have existed since time immemorial, it’s not about their rights or freedoms, which we have all come to accept to a greater or lesser degree (at least in Western societies), it’s about twisting, transforming and defiling humanity itself. And there is a purpose behind it.
Transgenderism is the first step towards Transhumanism, that is why it’s being shoved down our throats through the media, academia, entertainment, big tech, big pharma and the whole medical establishment.
The plan is to make us lose our identity altogether in order to make us open to the idea of becoming cyborgs, or as they call it, humans 2.0.
One must understand that the ultimate goal of the evil powers that rule the world, is to desecrate God’s creation and as his masterpiece, humanity is the ultimate prize.
The only way that they can gain ultimate control over us is to destroy our original, biological composition and to sever our connection to the divine by morphing us into technological/organic hybrids.
That is the Fourth Industrial Revolution that Klaus Schwab proudly preaches around the world with the help of his loyal counsellor, Yuval Noah Harari.
Transgenderism is the mechanism that is allowing them to not only transform the concept of human identity from male and female to a myriad of identity absurdities, it’s also allowing them to change the legal framework, the medical assistance, the social perception and even the language, that will soon give them a free pathway to Transhumanism.
They want to transfer human function, interaction and procreation away from God and into the hands of Big Tech and Big Pharma for ultimate and absolute control.
Let’s not fall prey to the provocations, the gimmicks and the grotesque show of depravation and violence, let’s wisen up and call them out for what they are trying to do:- destroy humanity as God created it.
These crazy, radical, cult-like transgender youngsters are the result of an evil psyop, the dispensable pawns used to advance a greater agenda on a chess board where check mate is a society of sexless, soulless cyborgs under total control.
If we have learned anything from swallowing red pill after red pill, it must be that we must look further than the puppets and the pawns and stand up against the puppet masters and the chess players.
It’s time to put up a joint, concerted front against the ongoing psychological and physical abuse that forms part of the ultimate plan to destroy us.
Let’s speak up, reject it, protect our children and NEVER turn our backs to our God given nature, that is the only thing that can save us.
🙏💜🙏💫🙏

hey person, I love your art, teach me your ways
Tumblr media
Im currently trying to design this thing in your au and I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions on how I'd design her. Like how would an artist fit into a freakshow? Suggestions a appreciated!
I asked that question to myself when I did leisel(I got away with it because she’s a painting) but I mean you don’t have to given them a particular role pertaining to their gimmick or one at all (so long as Caine’s found a use.. though Caine will force them into a role that may not be for them if he can’t think of anything else, for instance ragatha would be one of those people who didn’t have a role that actually works with their whole gimmick ((she did trapeze before because of this))
That said i could see them, based off of how Caine would respond by just looking at them,.. likely a beast tamer or the beast itself. You can always morph their look to fit the role too since that’s what Caine would do

starting to think about what I might like to write for the ofmd&fandom essay collection: something about the body diversity in this show feels so fresh and revolutionary and it seems to be something that resonates with a lot of people, and I think that might be because it's so rare to see someone on screen who just looks like yourself or someone you know, yk? Often actors represent beauty ideals that are unattainable for most people and if they don't they're a gimmick...
5 minutes later, still thinking about it: while a great many people are clearly as elated about this diversity as I am, there's still a tendency to overlook or "fix" this in fanwork, in certain circles people seem to be very uncomfortable with this messaging of the show on a deep, subconscious level. ofmd may be radical in it's acceptance but fandom often is not; fanart makes people lighter, skinnier, erases their unique physical features, and there's certainly not any malice behind it, it's just "what looks better". imo it's not very useful to just call these depictions racist (though they often are) let's instead examine the underlying assumptions in our collective cultural consciousness...
going to work, brain refuses to disengage: .....like all the worst ideas, eugenics as a movement really took off in the 19th century, and has been a plague on society ever since. a healthy body isn't just a blessing, it's become a moral obligation, and "healthy" means "aesthetically pleasing"; sickness is ugly and ugliness is sick. the unhealthy body is at best a problem to be solved, but mostly a shameful secret to be hidden and superfluously "fixed"....
laying in bed at 2am: the national socialist idea of the Volkskörper is the natural culmination, where the "diseased" mind or body morphes from a problem to a threat, and "diseased" means in any way deviant at all; dissidents, queer people, racial/religious minorities, disabled people, etc are all equally "diseased" (= a threat to the ambiguous Volk, which is defined mainly by exclusion; you will know when you are no longer part of it) and thus, robbed of their right to life. An often overlooked factor, however, is how under those viewpoints, everyone is dehumanized; no one is seen as an individual person with inherent rights. As long as you obey, as you conform, you are accepted; the moment you dare step out of line, voluntary or not, it's over
sitting down at the laptop, empty document open: BLACK PETE IS MY FAVE HERE'S WHY: 1) matthew maher is cute as heck. thank you, essay over

TLDR - I recap a poignant short story posted in 2000 which describes seeing beautiful young Bobby Shane rassle on TV back in the homophobic 1970s.
Bobby Shane would later morph into a cocky, flamboyant bleached-blond Heel like Ric Flair or Gorgeous George. However, he began his career as a fresh young pretty boy that made all the young gays swoon. I recently stumbled across a provocative short story that references him.
The author recalls being 10 years old, watching wrestling on TV with his redneck uncles down in Georgia: Ray age 19 and Kent age 25. Uncle Kent apparently had a man-crush on babyface Bobby Shane, who was suffering on TV that night. The author notes that Kent "truly did love Bobby Shane—in fact ached blue for him." (I know that feeling.)
In the match, Bobby takes a beating from an aggressive Black heel performing the old jungle savage gimmick. I'm guessing it looked something like this:
Tumblr media
That's when homophobic Uncle Ray begins to taunt Uncle Kent for being queer for young Bobby Shane, which pisses Kent off because, back then, it was considered despicable and unmanly to be aroused by other men, including pro wrestlers if you can believe that. (I mean, we're SUPPOSED to be turned on by pro wrestlers, that's the whole POINT of pro wrestling. Am I right?! And who the hell WOULDN'T be attracted to young Bobby Shane?? But in the 70's, you had to keep that queer shit on the Down Low as I recall.)
Tumblr media
Anyway, witnessing the grappling on TV becomes too stimulating and the Drunken Uncles tag team suddenly wanted to dominate someone (hey, I get it!) So they begin to roughhouse their little nephew, giving him Indian Burns and Red Bellies, all that grab-ass shit that young men do. And then it all goes downhill from there.
Anyway there is a lot more angst and regret to the story, but this scene just felt familiar to me as a horn-dog for wrestling who grew up around the same era. I can recall the hopeless yearning for the handsome Babyface in peril (mixed with vehement denials of any queer feelings); that tawdry and violent 1970s Rasslin on TV, holding everyone's rapt attention in case something hot should happen; those horny cravings to grapple somebody triggered by watching shirtless men on TV going at it; the sloppy rough-housing on the couch or floor, knocking over lamps while giving zero shits. Been there, done that, bought the skimpy briefs.
Tumblr media
Trigger warnings: the original story contains homophobic, racist, and ableist slurs (including the N word and R word - which is how many people talked during the 1970s when this story takes place) and descriptions of violence. I do not condone the crude language, I do not condone frightening children or making them cry - I just felt the wrestling scene sounded familiar.
The story was posted in 2000 to the Arkansas Literary Forum, an early and short-lived attempt to use the Internet for intelligent discourse rather than just porn, gossip, and fake news (we were still idealistic 23 years ago -- it hurts me to remember how earnest we were.) The story was written by journalist Phillip Martin and is titled, "Before Bobby Shane Grew a Mustache and Became Evil."

Me? Making a welcome home oc? Yea! Well, technically they’re two ocs!
more info, transcript and extra drawings under the cut <3
Meet Morrigan G. Mourn, and his shadow, Willow! They’re two cut characters that would’ve originally debuted during the Halloween special, mainly for being “too scary” or “too dark.” I really liked the idea of a macabre, black and white character that'd contrast the rest of the cast, so I had to make it myself fhdjks
Morrigan would’ve run a haunted house. Their whole gimmick (when looking at older scripts that they were in), was mainly regarding mental illness, grief, and coming to terms with the bad things in life.
Morrigan would've been the more grounded of the two, while Willow would've been the more anxious and sad (don't worry though, Morrigan would always be there to calm willow down!)
anyways! here's some extra stuff:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(yes i traced my own drawing for the ref,,,, im very lazy ok?? /silly)
also!: Willow is able to detach themself from Morrigan. when they do, they look something like this! they take up the aesthetic of a shadow puppet, and can morph into other creatures to further express how they feel, whether connected or not.
anyways x2, Here’s the transcript!:
“Morrigan G. Mourn and Willow are a mysterious duo to be sure. A man and his shadow running the neighborhood’s very much haunted house surely does stand out amongst their peers… no wonder they were scrapped.”
Not much information is known about these two, for they’re seemingly a character (or, pair of characters) that was scrapped late in development. What is known, is that they would’ve functioned as a way to introduce the darker and more macabre side of life to the audience in a more gentle way. Subjects they covered included: death, grief, mental illness, disease, and other things of that nature.
Most of the information on this illusive duo comes from the scrapped script of the Halloween special— where these two would’ve made their debut— and other notes regarding them. In some of these notes, it’s revealed not only the reason for their removal, but also the other neighbor’s opinions of them. They were removed for “being too scary / depressing.” As is conveyed through recovered director’s notes, and seemed to have a generally neutral or even sometimes negative relationship with the other neighbors— all for except Wally.
Some extra information regarding the two is that... and then the rest is cut off

catch of the day: magikarp
there's so many magikarp here, i love it! despite the name of my little blog gimmick, i didn't catch them because that's just plain rude to go fishing in a sanctuary jksahkjsfahjk. there's a lot of them on the surface, and i got to meet a lot of new personalities. i think my favorite is sharkie, i love fish pokemon with big personalities!
magikarp is the water-type with the biggest number of color morphs! and probably one of the most afaik asfajhsfgagshj. like every time i think i knew them all, i always discover a new morph! magikarp are really pretty pokemon that are really sturdy and interesting and i'm glad i got to meet other people who think the same at this festival.
