ironically i love thrifting but ive never thought about using ebay, do you have any tips or keywords you use on it to find deals and shifty stuff/wording to look out for?

honestly I don't find ebay to be shifty for buying stuff! people are scared about using it sometimes and I think it's a little funny lol I guess the tip would be that if you search for an item with vague enough terms, you'll get some SHEIN-esque mass produced clothes muddying the results. and you know it when you see it, because those listings look like shit btw. this type of thing:

like, these are real listings and everything, and you'd get the product, but they are obviously not what you're looking for. you can ignore these, but if you want to filter them out, you can just narrow the search to SPECIFICALLY pre-owned items.

There isn't really any wording to look out for-- the only other thing would just be to make sure the stuff you get can be returned, bc sellers can specify whether or not they'll take the items back!

#aside from that you can search by brand if you're looking specifically for like. modcloth dresses #you can look for that! and obviously it lets you sort by size and color and whatever #people post pics of the clothes on a hanger or laying flat on a bed/table or on a mannequin #or they'll reupload the original product photo from the origin website lol and that's fine too. honestly sometimes prefer that. #people really optimize search terms on there so you can be vague or specific it doesn't really matter #I think pre-op I was looking for button up pajama tops. bc they're soft and have fewer buttons. and I looked exclusively for pre-owned #so they'd be cheap lol #ebay is really strict actually and if an item doesn't show up or there's a hole in a shirt or whatever you aren't left in the lurch #and the sellers really really want good ratings #sergle answers #It's a problem though actually bc I really really really like shopping for clothes. but also. I got no money #there's lots of great stuff ppl put on ebay instead of in a physical thrift store

A new sculpture! Finally... I feel like I never sculpt anymore since I'm always sick or have some 500 other things going on or projects to finish, but I'm trying to schedule time to do it more often this year hopefully..! Just a generic fantasy creature as usual, but did try making the eyes a little more sparkly this time.. hrmm..

But just not exacltly like my mind vision lol.. #Also it's like... wow... someone with face spots and elf ears and a half open mouth with a gap tooth and wavy hair and kind of downturned #eyes... revolutionary... never been seen before... every sculpture I have ever made surely doesnt look licherally exactly like this... LOL #but maybe it's just a style. so what. People have their motifs lol.. Im just getting back into sculpting. I shall sameface in peace. huzzah #Just like the only thing I ever carve out of avocado pits anymore is eyes. Because that's just whats fun to do. I'm going to accumulate lik #25 similar avocado eyes and have nothing to do with them. I was thinking of stringing some together into a necklace of eyes or something li #like that but.. hrmm... #self #fantasy costume #If I had the money for a custom tailored fantasy-ish victorian-ish suit instead of piecing together random thrift store items with like walm #rt halloween costume type jackets and stuff.. #unstoppable..... #I would actually lean more straight up historical with my wardrobe it's just that everything I own basically is thrifted aside from a very #small portion of things (like usually socks for example I get from ebay. wigs from ebay. things that it's hard to find in thrift stores. etc #) and I rarely ever find stuff like that at the bins. Your closest bet is like. hopeing that the week you come in just so happens to also be #a week that a church costume department recently donated a bunch of old stuff. but I just haven't really had much luck finding like fancy ve #sts and suit coats and cloaks or like tunics and etc. etc. #Styles like mori kei or cult party kei are pretty accessible and easy for places like the bins (where youre usually digging through piles of #curtains and fabric scraps and doilies anyway). but finding like.. a straight up tudor england costume or something is . VERY rare #Sometimes you do find halloween costumes. Or like. stuff that's clearly like cheap 'Goth' stuff from shein or aliexpress that someone has do #nated and they can be a LITTLE okay in terms of usable for costumes. But you rarely find actual good quality stuff. obviously because like #real very good quality historical costumes are expensive and most people aren't just like 'yeah dump it off to goodwill' lol #In an ideal world though I would have fancy top hats and neck ruffles and stuff .. know this ghhjbhj #Lack of that will not stop me from taking picturesin basically the same outfit 6000 times though. Spotify pirating setup! AWA CD-700 cassette deck from like 1976 that still runs like a dream (albeit with a temperamental fast forward due to stretched belts) and a Sanyo M-GR78 from the 90s that is a piece of shit but was also dirt cheap and works just fine for my purposes

#The deck is an off brand thing but the secret is all those 70s toploaders shared the mechanisms #So you buy a teac or a sony or an akai and pay premium prices #Or you buy something from a brand nobody has heard of like AWA or fairmate or thorn and it's dirt cheap and works all the same #All that 70s stuff is built like a tank anyway #The 90s portables are all garbage but that means they're readily obtainable and cheap #I have a handful I got on ebay on the way and plan to pick my fav to keep #And clean up and resell the others #This one is likely to go bc it is massively chunky and not really to my styling tastes #But! It means I don't have to have my phone for music. And once I record enough I will stop paying for spotify #My music taste is limited enough that 6 or 7 90 min tapes will be PLENTY

Those fancy silver "dresser sets" (mirror, brush, comb, powder jars, etc.) of the Victorian and Edwardian eras were sold in different grades and were priced accordingly. The nicest ones were sterling silver (with glass jars made of real cut crystal), but there were less expensive versions that were silver plated or a nickel alloy called "nickel silver" (with jars made of pressed (molded) glass instead of crystal). Unfortunately, ALL of these options, regardless of price point, require polishing. 😔

(Part of my collection; the mirror and brushes are silver plated, the lid of the powder jar is nickel silver. None of them are sterling, haha.)

There’s an interesting feature on the Fox Kids magazine covers, where there’s a white section for something unique to be printed on there on each individual copy of the same issue. This can be seen when you look up a certain issue and the copies will most likely be distinct from another from that section having something different printed on it. 

A few of these can have advertising, the time slots for cartoons shown, the logo of the cartoon or the characters themselves. This is where Sam & Max come in as they get featured on this white rectangle, if you’re lucky. This is a really neat thing to have for your magazine but it also sucks for people that would like to collect different versions of stuff that feature their favourite characters. The only issues I can personally find that have Sam & Max featured sometimes is Autumn 1997 and Summer 1998. I’ll post examples of these below.

Oh and, not just the front has this feature- the back does as well. This applies to the same issues I said before but you can throw in Winter 1997 in there too now.

I really recommend familiarizing yourself with the way the eBay AI talks in your language if you buy there a lot. It's very useful if you can tell if a product description is generated by a bot because it often makes things up or describes things in exaggeratedly positive terms. Also a bot description is based only on the title and the product info that is already visible above the actual description (and what it thinks it can infer from these), so you know right away the description won't offer any new information and you don't have to read it. I recognize the bot by its writing style now and it helps.

You can familiarize yourself by pretending you want to sell something, writing a fake title and so on, and then just playing around with the AI.
