Nimona! *spoilers*
*WARNING! Major spoilers for Nimona follow.*
It's colorful, queer, and finally here. Trials and tribulations can make the victories all the sweeter, or so we are told. Only it seems there is some proverbial proof in the pudding: #nimona has finally made its way to Netflix after something of a bumpy ride, to put it lightly—and we are here for it. It's been a long time coming, too, with years and years spent in development hell.
Since its inception in June 2015, the film has survived a mega media merger between The Walt Disney Corporation and 20th Century Fox Animation (and delayed twice); in February 2021, one year before its projected release, Disney announced it was shutting down Blue Sky Studios, and production of the film was canceled entirely; it was then revived by Annapurna and Netflix; experienced several changes in creative leadership and a global pandemic (you may have heard of it) and a studio shutdown just as the film was finally coming together.
Now, the story that started life in ND Stevenson's beloved webcomic finally has made its way into silver screen heaven with its arrival on Netflix these past days. And it seems the dashboard's faultlessly loyal, long-time fandom can't get enough of this wild, wonderful, and life-affirming adaption.

history ━ 1937 fox vault fire
the 1937 fox vault fire occurred on july 9th, 1937 in a 20th century-fox storage facility in new jersey. in new jersey, gases produced by decaying film, combined with high temperatures and inadequate ventilation, resulted in spontaneous combustion. one death and two injuries resulted from the fire, which also destroyed all the archived film in the vaults, resulting in the loss of most of the silent films produced by the fox film corporation before 1932. films lost to the fire include pictures starring theda bara, shirley mason, william farnum, and etc. for some, it destoryed all their movies like valeska surratt, who has no existing films left. this incident spurred an interest in fire safety, and so by the 1950s, the use of nitrate film in the united states had been essentially eliminated.

In a move that surely made the Succession theme play in the heads of all who got the push notification, Rupert Murdoch announced today that the “time is right” for him to step down as chair of Fox Corporation and News Corp, ending his seven-decade reign as mastermind of the media landscape. His retirement won’t begin until November, but the great unbundling of his media empire has already begun.
Still, what an empire it is, or was. Murdoch, 92, got his start at 21 years old, when his father died and left him in charge of his relatively small Australian newspaper company. On taking the helm, he upped circulation by shifting their coverage to be more tabloidy. Throughout the 1960s and ’70s he continued to build that portfolio, gobbling up everything from The Sun in the UK to The Village Voice and New York magazine in the US.
By the 1980s, Murdoch was casting his gaze toward film and TV, taking over regional news stations and the movie studio 20th Century Fox. The Fox broadcast network launched in 1986, Fox News a decade later. By the early aughts, Murdoch set his sights on new media, writing a Scrooge McDuck–sized $580 million check to then-superhot social network Myspace.
Soon, a spark lit a fuse that set the whole dumpster on fire.
It’s an easy shorthand to say “Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp ruined discourse,” but that’s also not far from the truth. (The notion of “truth” is also something Murdoch’s empire has had a hand in destabilizing.) News Corp ownership effectively ruined Myspace, making way for platforms like Facebook and Twitter to host the public square, but the influence of Murdoch and his companies spread regardless. As WIRED reporters Vittoria Elliott and Peter Guest noted earlier this year, Fox News hosts like Tucker Carlson “helped bring often dangerous misinformation into the mainstream around the world.” Murdoch may have never controlled Facebook or Twitter, but the people his companies platformed dominated the conversation on them anyway.
“For Rupert Murdoch, all of his media empire was a way of trying to push certain ideas,” says Dan Cassino, a professor of government and politics at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
In the US, this was most evident in the way Fox News wed itself with the Trump administration, a marriage that was for a long time beneficial to both parties but also led to Fox News agreeing to pay $787 million to settle a lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems that “would have exposed how the network promoted lies about the 2020 presidential election,” as the Associated Press put it. It also led to revelations that Carlson, in the lead-up to the January 6 insurrection, sent texts saying that he hated Trump “passionately.” Carlson was canned by Fox News in April.
Murdoch newspapers in the UK backed Brexit and got caught up in a phone hacking scandal. In Australia, where his family’s news empire still holds massive influence, Murdoch periodicals showed skepticism about climate change. Today, as news spread that Murdoch was stepping down, Angelo Carusone, the CEO of watchdog group Media Matters for America, issued a statement saying, “The world is worse off because of Rupert Murdoch. No one should sugarcoat the damage he caused.”
Still, the empire Murdoch built, though vast, is dwindling. Murdoch pushed out Roger Ailes, the man behind the ascent of Fox News, in 2016. (Ailes died a year later.) News Corp sold off 21st Century Fox to Disney in 2019 for $71.3 billion. (Fox News and the Fox broadcast network were spun off into Fox Corporation as a result of the deal.) As of this summer, News Corp profits are down 75 percent year over year. As the media industry goes through a series of massive shake-ups ranging from the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger to the increasing dominance of Apple and Amazon, everything is getting unbundled and rebundled, including Murdoch’s empire.
Not that Murdoch hasn’t tried to have a hand in how those bundles come together. Murdoch abandoned a plan earlier this year to consolidate Fox Corporation and News Corp, a move he said could give the entertainment and publishing business better scale, after shareholders opposed it. “Fox is certainly diminished,” Carusone says. “I don’t think they’re going to be able to keep this big thing together.”
When Murdoch steps down in the fall, his son, Lachlan, will become chair of News Corp and remain Fox Corporation’s CEO and executive chair. (Cue the “eldest boy” memes.) It remains to be seen where Lachlan will take the empire from here or whether he’ll be able to maintain the same hold on political messaging as his father. Following the transition, Rupert Murdoch plans to stay on as chair emeritus of the companies, and in a message to his staff today said that in his new role he would still “be involved every day in the contest of ideas.” Perhaps, though, with his empire shrinking, that contest will no longer be an all-out war.

Studio Sour Grapes
Tumblr media
83 years ago, 20th Century Studios (now 20th Century Fox) released the masterpiece, Grapes Of Wrath, based upon the best selling novel by *John Steinbeck. Here is a reminder that the struggle for labor, for content creators, for artists, for writers, for all of us to be seen and valued as human has been a long one. Outright slavery was replaced with other institutions and legal methods designed to marginalize and control specific groups and socioeconomic classes and further divide labor based on race, gender, etc. Those in the arts who tried to call attention to this never ending struggle were (and in some cases still are) labeled with slurs, blacklists, and so on.
The point I am trying to make is that while highlighting the experiences of a downtrodden group of people resulted in some absolutely fantastic written, filmed, acted, and directed artistic endeavors, those endeavors resulted from the hardship and plight of ordinary people and their situation was the result of the greed and antipathy of the 'corporate' owners. Across a multitude of industries and types of labor, the many have been at the mercy of the few. It's easy to vilify the highest paid celebrities and writers in order to sow division and obfuscate the reality for most workers in America, whether within the art industry itself or any other form of labor.
The producers and owners have tried to say that the grapes are sour, that the writers don't make good wine, that the actors have plenty of money to pay for healthcare (not true), and so on.
Don't believe them: feed them the grapes of wrath. Feed them the truth.
*Without getting into the weeds regarding the controversy surrounding Steinbeck's novel & the novel by Sanora Babb's Whose Names Are Unknown (do look it up on wiki; fascinating story), it serves as a tale and backdrop for some of the current topics being discussed right now with respect to appropriation, equal pay, gender, as well as the name, image, and likeness.

Alright, in case you peeps haven't heard it's not just Marvel that Disney is trying to sell. They're selling everything and downsizing as much as possible. Which I, personally, think is hilarious cause there is only one possible reason why that I can think of that they would ever do this. So before we go further, I just want to clarify that is my opinion and speculation on the subject.
In the 90s Disney acquired Pixar and then in 2009 they bought out Marvel, somewhere between then and now they acquired Lucas Films (Star Wars), and most recently they bought out 20th Century Fox Films. So they've been doing a lot, right, and the thing is that's kinda sorta technically.....Illegal. Because now Disney is a monopoly corporation. Monopoly corporations are illegal because it means that they have an unfair advantage that prohibits rival companies from making any sort of profit.
https://www.ftc.gov/advice-guidance/competition-guidance/guide-antitrust-laws/single-firm-conduct/monopolization-defined#:~:text=The%20antitrust%20laws%20prohibit%20conduct,creating%20or%20maintaining%20monopoly%20power.
Disney has been able to get away with this, however, because they also have a foothold in the US government thanks to Walt Disney Sr. being a Nazi sympathizing piece of shit.
So what I'm thinking happened here is that Bob Iger, being the centrist A-hole that he is, finally pissed off all the wrong people on both sides of the line and someone finally decided to call him on out on his running a monopoly. That means in order to save their asses from a lawsuit, Disney is selling off as many properties as possible.
And as soon as Marvel is sold off I'm canceling my Disney+ and Hulu accounts. I've already ordered a new TV antenna cause I can't really afford cable. I'm doing this because I've realized that I played a part in writers and actors ending up homeless or whatever, and I want to minimize the damage as much as possible. Plus, the Marvel content was the only reason I got a Disney+ account so.....🤷🏻‍♀️

“Let people enjoy things” yes, sure, but also let’s not ignore the fucking absurdity and plain, well, plainness of modern marvel/star wars sequels/dc, etc. Sure if you enjoy it, it’s your interests, but it’s important to acknowledge that those movies they fucking cookie cut every year aren’t for you. They are for money. They are Hollywood, American propaganda. They are dead cows that the studios milk for more dollars because people will come and watch. And as long as it works, those corporations won’t loosen their grip. It’s unprofitable to make new, fresh, original pictures because so far the identical sequels are just fine at money making. Why were the seventies so explosive in the matter of new, unexplored films and ideas? Because the mega corporations were on the edge of bankruptcy, all the giants: 20th century fox, mgm, universal, etc. They needed new people, new ideas, new stuff, and they got Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, classic horror films, Back to the Future and the rest. Until people stop buying the bullshit that Marvel and Disney keep producing, the companies will remain stable and content. And as long as they are so, no chance will be given to new filmmakers, fresh, risky, unusual, deep, emotional ideas.

Big Daddy/Marcus Learns the Awful Truth
Characters from Sing (2016) and Sing 2 (2021) belong to Universal Pictures/Universal City Studios, INC., Illumination Entertainment, and its respectful owners.
Crossover with Horton Hears a Who (2008) which belongs to 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, 20th Century Fox Animation, Blue Sky Studios, and its respectful owners.
Sources for facts listed in the story:
Source 1: 12 Things Fathers Do That Emotionally Damage Their Sons (daddyful.com)
Source 2: 5 Ways Parents and Adult Children Can Improve Their Relationship | Psychology Today
So, Big Daddy/Marcus has decided to further educate himself on the topic of Father-Son Relationships and how to keep it together. But in this case, he is going to find out what would happen if he still led Johnny down the path of illegal doings. To find out, Big Daddy/Marcus decides to consult with Dr. Leslie Raymond. The brainiest parental-child therapist on the staff of Calatonia University.
Big Daddy/Marcus: Dr. Raymond? What I have done to Johnny was bad, mate. I also tried to lead him down the dark path and that was the worst mistake I have ever made.
Leslie: Oh. Marcus. How may I be of assistance?
Big Daddy/Marcus: Well, when a father leads his son down a dark, cold, and dangerous pathway, what would happen to their relationship, las?
Lesie: Oh, why would you ask something like that?
Big Daddy/Marcus: Well, I must confess that I tried that exact same thing with my son, Johnny. After finding out that he wanted to be a singer, I temporarily disowned him. But I later regretted my irrational decision and decided to apologize to him. Of course, he forgave me for the horrible thing that I had done to him, mate. I also told him later that I was going to reflect and further educate myself on these topics. I thought that it was important that I do so that way I can follow through with my word and prove to Johnny that I will be a better person and be the father that he deserves.
Leslie: Hmm. Let me see about this.
-Leslie Typing-
Leslie: Well, cases like these can lead the father's child to temporary or permanent emotional damage caused by a few things. Total Dishonesty to your Child, Mocking your Child's Achievements, Blaming your Faults on your Child, Manipulating your Child, and other things. All of these things are also signs of a father being a Narcissist. If these things keep up, Johnny will never want a relationship with you, meaning that your Father-Son bond as you know it will be destroyed.
Big Daddy/Marcus (Shocked): Destroyed? Oh Dear!
Leslie: I know, it is shocking for you to hear that. But you are not alone on this one. This is one of the reasons why DSS and Family Therapists recommend you talk to each other, which is one of the mature ways to improve your relationship, and take full responsibility for your actions, which you are in the process of doing so.
Big Daddy/Marcus (Sad): Aw, Man! I can't believe I have been a Narcissist father the whole time, las!
Lelsie: Hey, I have seen many Narcissist parents who want to change themselves and become better parents, not to mention better people. Some don't change, but some do. It seems like that you are one of those who want to change for the better. With love, faith, trust, respect, and determination, you will get there. Trust me, the view from the top is extremely beautiful.
Big Daddy/Marcus: So what you are saying that If a keep doing what I am doing now, by taking responsibility, talking to Johnny, loving him, and supporting him, I will still have a chance to have a relationship with him, mate?
Lesie: Yes, but the process will not be easy. You will still run into a few bumps here and there, but if you learn from those bumps, the ride will be smoother than it was before.
Big Daddy/Marcus: Okay. Thank you, las.
Leslie: No, thank you for taking this time to learn more about this topic. As you said, it is super important that you do so because from learning from these things, you can prove to Johnny that you will be a better father and a better person. Now, tomorrow I won't be here because I will be visiting my family in Salt Lake City, Utah. Even though I won't be here for a few weeks, I want you to know that I will still be available for family advice and more information.
-Leslie Writes Down Her Cellular Work Phone Number-
Leslie: Just give me a shout, okay?
Big Daddy/Marcus: Okay. Thank you so much. I will stay connected with you, las. Bye for now. Hope you enjoy your time with family.
Leslie: I will.

Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1957)
Tumblr media
SNL really have to up their fake commercial game.  The opening credits of this advertising satire present a cavalcade of malfunctioning and potentially even lethal products designed for the average consumer, all presented with a plastered-on grin and eager tone.  Who are you going to believe, your lying eyes or the person paid to make something sound good?  The world of advertising is a topsy turvy one headed by incompetent fools who put the squeeze on overworked creatives below them.  The things a man wouldn’t do for that ultimate symbol of corporate success: a key to the executive powder room.  When happenstance and a niece he dotes on a liiiiittle too much put Rock Hunter on collision course with Rita Marlowe and her oh-so-kissable lips, all of that and more is within grasp.  But little does he know that this will become something of a Faustian pact, driving a wedge between the man and those he loves as he blindly pursues his conception of success.  The Hollywood publicity machine is just as unrelenting as that of Madison Avenue ad firms, and these two make an almost literal marriage of convenience out of this.  Lies and deceit sold to an adoring crowd.  But the film sells it with a cheery facade, layering in little hints of light slapstick as Rock flees the adoring masses or tries to leave his handprints on a Walk of Fame.  Doing too many push-ups can stiffen your muscles and cause a sort of rigor, and the executive washroom emits an angelic choir.  It’s all insanity, so why take any of it seriously?
A metatextual vein runs through the film as well as its within-universe commentary on advertising.  Opening with Tony Randall playing the 20th Century Fox fanfare as a one-man band before introducing the film.  He drops by midway through to condescend the newfangled television crowd, commenting on how crystal clear and true to life the new medium is even as the image shrinks and becomes staticky and distorted.  Marlowe’s frumpy secretary is played by Joan Blondell, who was a sex symbol in the Pre-Code years before this new bird-noises making Marilyn Monroe type filled the headlines.  Acutely self aware, this is the monkeys running the circus and all Rock can do is just stare down the barrel of the lens and shrug wryly.
THE RULES
SIP
Someone names Rock’s advertising firm.
A brand is named.
Rita makes bird noises.
BIG DRINK
A famous person gets name-dropped.

'For three decades Searchlight Pictures has consistently stood firm as an awards season and box-office powerhouse, punching through with titles including The Full Monty, Black Swan, Slumdog Millionaire, Twelve Years A Slave, The Shape Of Water, Nomadland and The Banshees Of Inisherin. Initially established in 1994 as Fox Searchlight Pictures, a specialty production and distribution division of 20th Century Fox, the company has stayed true to its path of supporting independent, often edgy, filmmaking voices that can also find favour with audiences, as exemplified by the trio of hot titles in play this awards season: Poor Things, All Of Us Strangers and Rye Lane.
What is less known is the pivotal role that its lean UK operation has played in driving the creation of these and other titles on the Searchlight slate. “I think some people still don’t realise we’re here, and how bespoke we are,” says Katie Goodson-Thomas, executive vice president, head of film production and development and the founding member of Searchlight’s UK team. “There’s an assumption that everything is somehow just coming out of the US.”
Smooth operation
The UK office has been running since 2013, with UK projects previously overseen from Los Angeles. “The Full Monty was the film that made them realise the UK could be a foothold,” reflects Goodson-Thomas. The Bafta- and Oscar-winning 1997 comedy was backed by Film4 at development stage, but the UK funder opted out for production, with Searchlight fully financing at a $3m budget and later grossing more than $250m worldwide. Searchlight’s further notable UK forays included backing Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty, produced by Jeremy Thomas’s Recorded Picture Company, and Never Let Me Go. The company distributed Sexy Beast (2000), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), The Last King Of Scotland (2006) and Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
Goodson-Thomas, a former producer, initially joined to work across both Searchlight and private equity fund Ingenious Media, which had struck a co-financing deal in 2011, and was tasked with searching the UK for new investment projects. “For the first year, I didn’t even have an assistant,” she recalls. But Goodson-Thomas fought to get the UK noticed. After two years she was moved into the now shuttered 20th Century Fox Soho Square office, to work solely for Searchlight.
“Partly that was because I had been a British producer before, so I was more proactive than they were used to,” she says. “Suddenly we had a slate, and there were loads of films about to go. Also, the industry here over the past decade has continued to get stronger and stronger, and they could see there was commercial potential.”...
The London office’s production and development squad now totals a small but mighty four, headed up by Goodson-Thomas, who along with her US counterpart DanTram Nguyen has joint oversight of film development and production on both sides of the Atlantic; they report into Searchlight’s US-based co-presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum. “We both run everything, and we have each other, but I tend to oversee the UK [and European] productions in a more hands-on way, and she tends to oversee the US ones,” she says.
In the UK, Goodson-Thomas works alongside Pete Spencer, director of development and production, who came to Searchlight in 2017 from Big Talk Pictures and oversees the day-to-day running of the London office. They are supported by two assistants, Florence Darlington and Tara Williams, who are across development and talent outreach.
Rounding out the team are legal and business affairs and marketing and distribution, bringing the total Searchlight UK workforce to around 15, most of whom are based in Disney’s corporate HQ in Hammersmith, west London. The production and development team, however, stayed behind in Soho, moving into a comfy fifth-floor base in London’s media heart, after Fox’s Soho Square office was closed in the wake of the Disney acquisition...
Being embedded in the UK industry allows Goodson-Thomas and her team to keep close ties with the public funders, BBC Film, Film4 and the BFI, and UK-based producers, tracking projects and talent and looking for the right opportunities for Searchlight to come on board at the development stage, as a co-producer and/or as a financier and executive producer. Film4 in particular is a regular partner — Poor Things was co-financed with Film4 and All Of Us Strangers was developed by Film4 and financed by Searchlight — but it also works with the BFI and BBC Film, as it did on Rye Lane, which the three partners co-financed.
They also have longstanding ties with some of the UK’s leading independent producers. Goodson-Thomas started her career at Graham Broadbent and Damian Jones’ Dragon Pictures, collaborating with the producers again on All Of Us Strangers and Rye Lane through Broadbent’s Blueprint Pictures and Jones’ DJ Films respectively...
All Of Us Strangers is nominated for six Baftas, including outstanding British film of the year and best director. At time of writing it had passed $3.5m (£2.8m) at the UK-Ireland box office after 10 days on release. The Searchlight team had been tracking the project for some years, with Film4 developing an adaptation of Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel Strangers with Goodson-Thomas’s former employer Broadbent and Blueprint. When Andrew Haigh boarded as director, it became a no-brainer for Searchlight.
“Andrew is the perfect example of the type of filmmaker we want to work with, but it had to be the right project,” she says. “We like to bring those auteur voices to a wider audience.”...'
