though she's been upstaged by her counterparts in the last decade, at the time, the gt2 rs was the most powerful road car porsche had ever built. only 500 were made. one of which, as we all know, came into the paws of one mark webber--another, presumably, found a home in sebastian vettel's garage. why do i say presumably? well..

and though nothing was mentioned about matching cars, they're driving the same model (DEFINITELY different car though, one purchased by the red bull ring) in the now-famous martian taxi drivers instagram post, where mark says, “At the end of the day we even drove each other for a few laps. That’s the biggest bloody endorsement a street car can have, F1 drivers wanting to do more laps for the own pleasure😉👌🏽” april 24, 2020. this is the only allusion to the car i can find that is not only from 2010, but also shows that seb so much as touched a 2010 porsche 911 gt2 rs.

now, you may ask, why are you being so cagey about seb and his porsche?

well, the thing is. sebastian vettel has not so much as breathed a WORD to the media about owning a porsche 911, much less matching one with mark. as far as i can tell from the numerous searches i've done, anyway. everything we know about their matching porsches has come from mark.

TIMELINE

so with that, let's piece it together:

some point on thurs/fri of the monaco gp (may 13 or 14, 2010): martian see the 911 and they're like. hot damn. seb says what do u think. mark says let's get one each.

saturday (may 15): mark beats seb in qualifying, then gloatingly asks if seb is still in the mood to buy the porsche. and because seb is insane, he says yes.

some unidentified point in the future, likely in the break between monaco and turkey because i sincerely doubt mark was in the mood to go car shopping with seb after that (may 16-26): they buy the porsches. mark buys a white one, seb buys a black one.

2016: they don't speak about this to anyone in the media until mark retires from racing for good. when questioned about his favourite porsche cars, only THEN does he even mention that this car matching business took place at all. and, unprompted, repeats this story to multiple news outlets when asked about the 911.

we're faced with several years of silence until 2021, when the story pops up again.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS AND SPECULATION

have you ever thought it weird that something as clinically insane as matching cars with your rival was never given more media attention than a passing few lines in some articles? somehow, either nobody has asked about the fact that Thee most fractious relationship in contemporary f1 bought matching cars, or they DID ask and were effectively muzzled, which is telling in and of itself. and check the dates: 2016. 2016. 2016. 2020. 2021. they did not only keep this under wraps until mark retired and became a full time porsche #influencer. one of them is either STILL KEEPING IT UNDER WRAPS...

... or doesn't have the car at all.

does seb even own this porsche? why have we only heard of it from mark's mouth? there are so many articles on ~road cars f1 drivers own~ but none of them even mention seb having it. so what's the truth? did he never buy one and only tell mark he did? does it stay dusty under a cover in his garage, never to see the light of day? did he buy it and then immediately sell it/give it away after turkey? or because it was like, purposefully to match with mark, is it one of the things he's Sentimental about that he's viciously protective of and keeps out of the spotlight?

mark goes into detail and says that seb got a black porsche, so that must mean that it EXISTS? surely?? well, we take that for granted, but we may never actually know.

another thing: notice how in the Drive article, mark reportedly went to a uk dealership in person to order the car? if he and seb bought them together, does that mean they also went to the dealership... together? and if we take this to be true, does that then mean they physically went to a porsche dealership in the uk just weeks before they collided in turkey and their relationship tripped and fell off a cliff? or did they go separately in person, or did only mark go in person and seb order through connections?

yet another thing: in the "Mark Webber and his 911 GT2 RS" video linked above next to auto123, he drives a black 911 and seems to imply that the car is his: "i'm definitely not gonna be parting with this one." but the car is black. and he says he got a white one. WHAT? [EDIT: the one in the video may be the 2011 model and not the 2010 model he bought with seb]

AND ANOTHER THING TO NOTE: while the internet was surely a Widespread Phenomenon in 2010, there may very well have been printed news about the matching cars that never got digitally archived. unfortunately i do not have a time machine, so that's up in the air for now.

Managing Writing Time

An online friend reached out recently, determined to get on track with the fiction novel she really wants to write (and she just had a co-authored children's book about alien life on exoplanets published!)

But this novel idea she's had for a couple years, she's been stuck on, with months between any progress, and she's frustrated that she's keeping it on the backburner, but also doesn't know how to make room for it.

Obviously I post a lot of my writing updates. Moreso on Instagram than here (that will change), but basically I have a running daily total of my wordcount, and log the days and hours I write.

I like data. What can I say.

Anyway. Here's the advice I gave her. It's totally subjective.

Writing - any art in general - is a muscle. I don't so much believe in the muse as I do in consistency. Time management. Frequency, less so. Consistency is what I want to draw the point on.

Setting up a routine and sticking to it will train your brain. Picking a location, a day of the week, and a time will more or less Pavlov you into creativity. At the very least, the location matters, I'd argue. This is where the argument against working in your bedroom, or even your house comes from. Removing yourself from intimate familiarity helps boost your brain and creative power, in a similar way that traveling does.

If you're stuck, pick a place and time and go write. Try to do this every week. Build up that Pavlovian response for your brain. "Oh! We're here now. Go-go-gadget writing inspiration!"

Over the 2020 and first half of 2021 COVID shutdowns, I often wrote in my room, and it was terrible. If you remember, I literally bought a desk, decked it in plants, and got lights, all in an attempt to build the resemblance of a mini coffee shop, because my brain literally NEEDED that to be removed from the rest of my apartment, even though it was the corner of my room. It had to physically, and mentally, feel bigger than my room. It had to be my Narnia. My Police Box.

Ever since I rebuilt my routine and started going back to a coffee shop (yes, it's just Starbucks, lol) I've been pumping out 2.5k - 3.5k words a session, vs the 500 - 900 I was doing up until the end of October. It took me 7 years to write the book I published last year, when I was pumping them out on average every two years before then. Now I'm well ahead of schedule for this current book's release in 2024, because I've rebuilt the routine and stuck with it.

18 years of writing has just....trained my brain: coffee shops at this time of day (the evening) are my creative place & times.

I really need to get out of food service/ physically demanding jobs in general. Most of my experience is in the food industry, working with kids, or working with cars. I love all of these things, but I have too many health problems and too much chronic pain that by the end of a shift I feel like I'm fucking dying. does anyone have any advice or resources on how I can find something else that will still help me support my family with the experience I have? I'm more than willing to try new things and put in the effort, and if it happens to be something I can do from home, even better!

My #1 post of 2022

Hey so shit went really bad all at once and it's a whole thing.

My gas got shut off for non payment even though I was paying the front office. The lady was pocketing my money and got fired already, but I was paying cash so the apartment complex isn't helping me get it back on since there's "no proof" that it was paid I have $30 worth of overdraft that has to last me until Sunday, including feeding both my partner and I, I need to get food for Sampson (my bearded dragon, all the other animals are good to go and stocked up, but im out of fresh veggies), and I still need to get a ride to work Saturday. So like That's stressful Like this completely fucked me financially and for getting the house, it wiped out our savings and is making rent hard to afford Plus my roommate emptied my change that I was saving up for a car without asking, so the other $347 I had saved in coins is gone now too. Literally Everything was going so good, I was supposed to be getting a promotion, and we were supposed to be moving into a house in December, but the promotion fell through and now our savings are wiped out.I already paid the $500 to turn the gas back on, but I still owe another $500 and I only had half of the rent so I owe the apartment complex like $600 bucks still, plus all of the bills and next months rent are due on our next paycheck and all our savings are gone. it's looking like I'm going to be stuck in this apartment for a whole extra year. I've gotta come up with at least 2 grand by the end of the month to cover the other half of this months rent, next months rent, and the bills, 2500 if I want to pay the remaining lump sum on the gas bill, but that still leaves me at being broke or behind because I still also have to keep the house running, animals and people fed, get rides to work, and buy necessities And like I can do it if I work a shift at both jobs every single day but I'm already so exhausted and overworked I genuinely don't know if I can do that, Idk man I'm just overwhelmed and numb and not really processing anything bc I feel like if I think about it too hard everything that's built up is going to come crashing down and I'm going to break.

It's almost time for the September writing challenge!

Although I've tried to make it as gender-neutral as possible, it's been kinda hard 😅 That being said, just because there's a man and a woman together in the picture doesn't mean you have to write a straight couple 😅 You can have two men together, two women, a non-binary couple. BRIGHT FIREBALL RATTLES THE EASTERN USA 8/2/2023: West Virginia: 2:13 AM: 2 Booms, 1 Bright Flash, 3 Distinct Fragments:

This morning just after 2 a.m. EDT, sonic booms rolled across the eastern USA, shaking buildings hard enough to wake observers. Sky watchers looked up and saw a brilliant fireball tearing itself apart overhead. Amateur astronomer Bill Stewart of Ceredo, West Virginia, was outside on his rooftop observatory and accidentally videoed his own reaction to the booming flash: https://youtu.be/9q_Crmh4zWw "It was at 2:13 a.m.," says Stewart. "The fireball made two audible booms. After one bright flash it broke into 3 distinct fragments. One remained bright as it descended below the horizon. It could have possibly touched down although I didn’t hear it impact." The American Meteor Society has collected more than 65 eyewitness reports from 9 US states. The fireball first appeared over Ohio, streaked south, then petered out over Georgia. Observers said "it flashed like lightning," "it shook my house," and "I've never seen anything like it." "I agree it was brighter," says Stewart. "The reflection of the fireball was cast on a metal roof below, quite vividly, whereas the Moon was not as reflective." There are currently three active meteor showers capable of producing bright fireballs: The Perseids, Alpha Capricornids, and Southern Delta Aquariids. However, the fireball's path through the sky doesn't match any of those showers. It may have been a random meteoroid--also known as a "sporadic." Random meteoroids hit Earth all the time as our planet plows through old clouds of comet dust and asteroid debris, which litter interplanetary space. On any dark night you can see a handful of bright sporadics. This fireball, however, may be exceptional. According to NASA statistics, sporadic fireballs exceeding supermoon brightness disintegrate in Earth's atmosphere no more than once every year or so. Meghan Markle Trolls Turned Hate Into Estimated $3.5M Industry on YouTube

Meghan Markle was the target of a monetized hate campaign by 25 YouTube channels that earned an estimated $3.5 million from ad revenue, according to a data analysis agency.

The three most successful YouTube accounts trolling the Duchess of Sussex have earned around $494,729 over the duration of their existence, a report by Bot Sentinel calculated.

One also made racially charged comments about Dodi al-Fayed, Princess Diana's Middle Eastern boyfriend at the time of her death, saying: "You just know they're gonna be covered in hair all over their body a bit like, you know, an ape."

The estimated incomes were based on YouTube Studio revenue inadvertently revealed by one account, Yankee Wally, in an online video, as Newsweek reported in December.

Yankee Wally's data showed she earned around £2,503.84 (more than $3,300) in a single month in November last year and had "Revenue Per Mille," or earnings per 1,000 views, of $7.

The company used that figure to estimate total earnings for the three biggest anti-Meghan channels across all their videos.

The same formula was applied to a broader group of 25 channels to produce an estimate of $3.5 million across 497.5 million views.

Bot Sentinel's report stated: "According 2taz, Murky Meg, and Yankee Wally aren't the only YouTube channels focused predominantly on disparaging Meghan Markle.

"We were able to identify at least 25 similar YouTube channels with a combined 497+ million views and an estimated $3.48 million in total YouTube earnings."

It added: "In 2019, Yankee Wally, Murky Meg, and According 2taz began creating low-quality YouTube videos targeting Harry and Meghan.

"The trio created hate-filled and mostly inaccurate videos to monetize conspiracy theories about Harry and Meghan.

"The three YouTube channels had a combined 70+ million views, and an estimated $494,729 in total YouTube earnings."

The report describes how Yankee Wally made racially charged comments in her videos, including about women of color and Middle Eastern men.

In a October 11, 2021, video, titled "The Mystery & Middle East Connections of #meghanmarkle," she said: "I didn't think Dodi al-Fayed was good looking at all in fact I thought he was rather awful looking. He had that billiard ball head.

"Nappy hair, I don't like that. And you know, you just know they're gonna be covered in hair all over their body a bit like, you know, an ape and I really, really don't like that either."

Dodi Fayed died alongside Princess Diana in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997, while their car was being followed by the paparazzi.

A July 23, 2019, video by Yankee Wally was titled, "Meghan Markle is uncultured, uncivil spoilt and rude. But she CAN see 500 yds with her rat-eyes!"

Another video titled, "there's a very dangerous organisation formed, to demolish the Monarchy. we must act fast," included a list of pro-Sussex Twitter accounts.

Yankee Wally said: "These are aggressive people you know. They are, they're WOCs that have got a chip on their shoulder bigger than you'll ever, well, you know what they're like. They just get off on hate."

WOC is an acronym that stands for "women of color."

The report stated: "In this video, Yankee Wally shared a list she believed was filled with women of color, and she wanted her subscribers/followers to target the women on the list."

Elsewhere, the three YouTube accounts shared conspiracy theories about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, including suggesting that the duchess faked her first pregnancy.

The Bot Sentinel report reads: "Based on the data and extensive evidence we collected, our research has revealed a sustained coordinated campaign to defame Harry and Meghan, and tarnish their brand.

"The campaign spans several social media platforms across multiple continents, and the key participants are predominantly Caucasian women between the ages of 38 and 65.

"Racism and YouTube ad revenue are the primary motivators of the core group. Subgroups are driven primarily by their hatred of Meghan Markle, taking their cues from the core group.

"The bizarre and nonsensical conspiracy theories they believe are reminiscent of QAnon, but the hate and vitriol they spread would classify them as a hate group."

Yankee Wally told Newsweek in an email: "I object to ALL of those allegations. That's a gross invasion of privacy."

After a story about her earnings in December, she added: "Every year I have to fill in a tax return for USA. Failure to do so results in deduction of 40 percent.

"I always complete mine so I pay 20 percent. 41 percent of all ad revenue goes to YouTube, I'm 65 and retired, not on any government benefits.

"The income varies greatly. I've earned as little as $700 a month. Now that Bouzy has continued to use his twitter account to say I'm a 'hate' account, I'm feeling less inclined to make videos at all.

"Regarding Meghan Markle; hate is too strong an emotion to waste on someone that I just don't like."

Newsweek has reached out to Murky Meg and According 2taz for comment.

Convention Review: New York Comic Con

( Convention: New York Comic Con

Location: New York City!

Date: October 7-10 (Thurs-Sun)

Table cost: $512 (with fees)

Table size: 6'

Table placement: in the dark half of the hall (L22, I believe)

Items for sale: 11x17" posters (fanart and original), tutorial artbook, coloring book, original comic (sons of fire), zines (fanart and original; sfw and nsfw), pins (original), resin coasters and jewelry

New items/display: Increased commission prices, took posters in backdrop out of plastic sleeves due to glare

Mask policy: Vaccine card required for entry (also the case in many businesses), masks required of all.

Previously attended? Yes, only as an attendee

Transportation: Flew (southwest - hooray for checked bags!), Uber/Lyft, subway, walking (yes, my setup fit in these 2 suitcases... and weighed something like 90 lbs between the two bags)

Pros: One of the two biggest comic shows in the US (the other being SDCC) with a lot of prestige, editors and publishers attend

Cons: Extremely expensive convention in an extremely expensive city, huge artist alley means few people stand out, artist alley was in a hall that had two distinct areas (one of which had a lower ceiling and was more dimly lit, making it seem like an annex area - this is where I was), selective stock due to transportation needs

Buckle up, because NYCC is a doozy. Also I ramble, and this is not well organized, thanks ADHD.

New York Comic Con is a show I've applied to for almost a decade, mostly because there is this idea in my head that once I'm good enough to be accepted into NYCC, I've made it as a comic artist (it's a lie). If you've never been, NYCC is a huge show, where big names like Marvel and DC go all out with huge stages and booths, where publishers pay to fly in their top artists and writers, where A-list celebrities announce their new secret projects. It, along with San Diego and C2E2, is one of the biggest shows in the US - and world.

In the past years, NYCC has grown to an audience of 250,000 people (according to wikipedia data: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Comic_Con), but due to Covid, it was running at a reduced capacity of 150K this year, with a limited number of 3 and 4 day tickets and a concentration on single-day attendance. (For comparison, the 2018 data for SDCC is 130K attendees, according to wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_Comic-Con) This year, the artist alley was in hall 1A and 1B, which can be opened up to form one giant hall, while the main exhibit hall was on the 3rd floor. While we were next to the autograph lines, the artist alley was still a bit of a trek from the exhibit hall.

Before going, I talked to others I know who had exhibited at NYCC before, and was told things like "you can't help but make money at NYCC." I was also nervous about fanart, as the big boys were there, and while most of the fanart I do is from companies that have more or less said they don't care (funimation, mihoyo), I was still a little nervous (I shouldn't have been, there are people who's entire booths were nothing but pinups of copyright characters).

Covid of course made 2021 a unique experience, and unfortunately a lot of it was not great. I will say I most likely got in due to the fact I was crazy enough to apply to a huge show in the middle of a pandemic. However, as far as I know tables were still as expensive as always even though the attendee count was reduced by over 100K people. Additionally, I was in the darker area, which definitely had less traffic than the brighter area.

I noticed on Thursday that there were a number of empty tables (and even found out via social media that some artists "forgot" they had tables - how do you pay $500 and forget?), and by Saturday many artists had asked permission and moved or spread out (the moving I understand as I wound up doing so as well, the spreading out I still find very unfair). The head of the AA was very gracious and communicative, though, which is rare and amazing in the world of conventions.

New York Comic Con was also the only convention this year I didn't do on my own - a wonderful friend from California had never been to New York City and wanted to go, so they flew out and helped me, as well as saw the city some. The amazing writer, Adam Lance Garcia, author of Sons of Fire, was also there as he lives in the New York area. Thanks to my friend from California, Adam and I were also able to meet with a publisher, and Sons of Fire is now officially joining the Virus Comics lineup!

(Not being alone also meant I was able to look around the artist alley through the weekend. I am a horrible, judgmental person, and I did notice there were a number of artists there that only did pinup work, or fanart, or giant posters. In fact, finding people who did their own original comics seemed to be the minority. And while I understand that the fancy fanart posters certainly bring people to one's table, that's never been my final goal as an artist. Honestly, I find the fanart and resin I do to be stress relief between my real work of book illustration, comics, and commission/freelance work.)

There were some really cool parts to NYCC, like the all-gender bathrooms (though it is a bit awkward to walk into one and find people peeing at urinals just out in the open - but honestly if we put stalls around all the toilets/urinals, then all bathrooms can be all-gender bathrooms) and I got to meet and talk to a ton of amazing artists (though I did run into a lot of them again at other shows), and my friend and I did do touristy things in NYC which I'd always wanted to do (the Empire State Building, 9/11 memorial, and Central Park Zoo), but I have really mixed feelings about NYCC.

(the TL;DR part) Overall, I DID make a slight profit, but only because I did not have to pay for a hotel. 2021 is definitely an unusual year for all conventions, so I can't say definitively that NYCC is a show worth or not worth going to, but if profit is your only motivation I would say there are a lot of other shows to choose from.

In previous years, I've used NYCC as a portfolio review convention, and to network with other artists, writers, and editors, but the only lasting connection I've forged of those has been Adam and our project Sons of Fire. If you ARE going as an artist, having at least one helper and a crew to split hotels and other bills with certainly makes a difference (or knowing someone in town you can stay with). However, when people are seeing 200K+ faces, there's no way you'll really be remembered by an editor or publisher

Gross sales: <$3k

Recommend/will attend again? Unsure - if there's a good reason, or if I'm invited by a publisher I'd figure out how to go, but it is a very expensive show that is hard to justify.

At the height of the controversy surrounding Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and the revelations that he’s under investigation for sex trafficking, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) bet big on a nationwide joint fundraising tour with her embattled colleague. But new campaign filings show that not only did the gamble not pay off, but that the much-maligned Republicans actually spent four times as much as they raised.

Greene, the House GOP’s top fundraiser, is now faced with a decision: She can continue to join forces with her beleaguered ally at the expense of her campaign war chest, or she can cut bait and let Gaetz fend for himself.

Since Gaetz and Greene kicked off their joint fundraising committee with a May 7 event at The Villages in central Florida, their campaigns and joint fundraising committee have posted a combined loss of $342,000. And according to recent filings with the Federal Election Commission, that joint fundraising effort, “Put America First,” reported only $59,345.54 in contributions.

That sort of meager haul would be fine for a dinner or one-time event, but Gaetz and Greene have repeatedly held high-profile events and spent a whopping $287,036.19 to hold them—meaning they’re in the hole by more than $225,000.

Both Gaetz and Greene contributed $150,000 apiece from their own campaigns to the joint fundraising committee. And they’ve raised money almost entirely from small-dollar donors. Only four people gave $500 or more to the shared committee. But their campaign tour of some of the most Trump-friendly areas in the nation has been inordinately expensive.

In fact, the big winner from the Gaetz and Greene barnstorming appears to be Gaetz’s PR firm.

The Logan Circle Group, which the campaign hired in early April, made off with more than a million dollars in the second quarter of 2021. While the majority of that money came from Gaetz—$825,000 over the course of one month—the firm nudged past the million-dollar mark with the $250,000 it received from Put America First. Those payments, nearly 90 percent of the committee’s total budget, were for “event production and management,” according to FEC filings.

A Gaetz campaign spokesperson told The Daily Beast that all donations raised on the tour had gone to Put America First. Asked again if that was correct, the spokesperson said it was. Upon double-checking with the campaign’s finance team, the spokesperson would only say that, “Our filings speak for themselves.”

But if the filings speak for themselves, then they’re not saying many good things.

Individually, Gaetz and Greene raised $1.34 million and $1.31 million in the second quarter of 2021, respectively. Those totals are certainly impressive, and Gaetz and Greene could argue that the publicity from their circuit is helping them fundraise individually. Except, they’re not making that argument, and both candidates have actually raised less in this most recent quarter than they did in the first.

Gaetz slipped from $1.82 million in the first months of the year, his personal best. He also spent $1.95 million along the way, the majority of it on fundraising and a pricey public relations scramble to push back against reports about the investigation.

But Greene—whose campaign is easily the biggest money draw among the House GOP—plummeted, coming $1.9 million short of her eye-popping $3.2 million first-quarter haul. After expenses, including travel and fundraising costs, she closed the second quarter with only a $300,000 net gain. She had ended the first quarter up $1.8 million.

A Gaetz spokesperson—who was not affiliated with the Logan Circle Group—defended the three-term congressman’s fundraising performance.

“Despite an endless stream of lies from the media, Congressman Gaetz continues to be among the most prodigious fundraisers in Congress and is the only Republican who doesn’t accept donations from federal lobbyists or PACs,” the spokesperson said in a text message. Gaetz, a three-term congressman representing a deep-red district in the Florida panhandle, hadn’t raised more than a million dollars in a quarter until October 2020.

“He thanks his tens of thousands of donors and promises to always fight for them,” this spokesperson added.

Greene and Gaetz, arguably the two most controversial House Republicans, were united this spring by scandals that had not only alienated them from the mainstream, but left them isolated within their own party.

At the time, Gaetz was the focus of a string of media reports revealing details about his role in a federal sex crimes investigation, which in addition to the trafficking allegations reportedly extends to a sweeping public corruption probe.

Soon after The New York Times broke the news of the investigation, Gaetz—a self-identifying “Florida man” who wears his loneliness among D.C. colleagues as a badge of courage—found himself even further marooned politically. Only Greene and longtime ally Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) were willing to speak up in his defense.

“When I first got to Washington, the party leaders said ‘Gaetz, it seems to us you’re not really a team player,’ and I said ‘I am, but you’re not my team,’” Gaetz told supporters in his district the day before the Times story ran.

Greene, for her part, had just been bitten twice by her GOP colleagues. In February, House Republicans stripped the conspiracy theorist of her committees, and in April, she was forced to cancel her proposed “America First” caucus amid criticism for its white nationalist rhetoric. Gaetz had signed on to the caucus, and the pair later applied the same moniker to their tour.

Two months in, however, their joint effort appears primarily concerned with fighting gravity. Venues have canceled events in response to public outcry, and after the launch at The Villages the media has largely ignored their whistle-stops.

But Greene, who has shown GOP leadership her value as a fundraising powerhouse, still apparently sees reason to go forward, at least according to the Gaetz campaign. A spokesperson for the Florida Republican told The Daily Beast that Greene had personally committed to future events benefiting the joint committee.

If she’s personally committed to future events, maybe she should be paying for them instead of bilking people out of their money to try in vain to pay for her vanity and ignorance.
