@spiderwebd regretevator
Regretevator (Game) is similar to The Normal Elevator from older days of roblox, being that you enter an elevator and it will arrive on a myriad of different floors to explore, minigames to complete, or just . Funny Thing
The Regretevator (the actual Elevator) is an interdimensional form of travel that is used by various entities to get around. It is confirmed to be able to go Anywhere. and seems to be able to transcend time and space which is always fun
The game features 70+ floors currently, and has a certain style of humor to it, but what really makes it are the NPCs, interactable characters, some of which can enter the elevator and some of which cannot. Im going to recap the ones who will enter very quickly, so sorry for the imagespam here:

May–August 1985. Conceived before the Crisis on Infinite Earths but published concurrently, THE SHADOW WAR OF HAWKMAN was an ambitious attempt by writer Tony Isabella and editor Alan Gold to forge a new direction for Hawkman and Hawkwoman, who'd been stumbling along since the late 1960s in a series of backup features and guest spots. The story borrows a page or three from the lexicon of paranoid '70s conspiracy thrillers, revealing that agents of the Hawks' homeworld of Thanagar are now on Earth, working in secret to lay the groundwork for a military invasion by using the Absorbacon, a Gardner Fox gimmick capable of gathering all the knowledge of a particular world, to gather exploitable secrets from the minds of Earth people. Thanagarians are immune to the Absorbacon's mind-reading powers, but the Hawks are cut off from most of their friends and allies, fearing that any information they share with their JLA comrades might immediately fall into enemy hands. The infiltrators, meanwhile, target the Hawks in hopes of seizing their now rare and valuable Thanagarian technology.
In the Silver Age Hawkman stories, Thanagar had been presented as a typical scientifically advanced post-scarcity society, where crime is mostly limited to a handful of thrillseekers and alien invaders. However, it had suffered a series of major crises in the '70s, which the miniseries helpfully summarizes while filling in a few blanks:
Tumblr media
(Inevitably, a few key points of the original stories have gotten lost in translation: In the original Equalizing Plague storyline in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #117–119, Katar and Shayera are both infected, but Katar is able to cure himself and later Shayera, albeit not anyone else on Thanagar. The cure provided by Hyathis, an old JLA villain, is not part of that story, but is revealed in the 1978 Adam Strange/Hawkman crossover in SHOWCASE #101–103.)
Tumblr media
The original Equalizing Plague storyline is a weirdly reactionary effort for the usually humanistic Elliot S! Maggin, about a silly-looking space villain (the dude with the red helmet and the mustache in the first page above) whose desire for universal equality destroys whole societies by transforming everyone into nebbishes. Even Gene Roddenberry might have balked at that one, and a central problem with Isabella's "Shadow War" storyline is that it requires readers to not only take that story seriously, but even empathize with how it has left Thanagarians susceptible to fascism. (The villains are never very sympathetic, but you're supposed to see where they're coming from, which would be a lot to ask even in less ridiculous circumstances.)
Despite that, the SHADOW WAR miniseries is a decent effort, with higher-than-usual stakes and an effective sense of menace. The scripts are a bit florid — albeit fairly restrained for Isabella — but the art suits them very well, with Rich Howell's Murphy Anderson-like pencils given moody atmosphere by Alfredo Alcala's inking. It sold well, leading to a 1986 HAWKMAN SPECIAL by Isabella and Howell with new inker Ron Randall. This has Katar agonizing over the Thanagarian agents he's killed, which is most interesting for Isabella's novel take on the Gentleman Ghost, an old Hawkman villain who unexpectedly becomes the Hawks' new ally.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, what Isabella and Gold had intended as a five-year saga quickly ran into trouble in the new post-Crisis HAWKMAN series that followed the SPECIAL. According to Isabella, the bigger problem was that new editor Denny O'Neil, who took over soon after the launch of the new series, was annoyed that Isabella would attempt something so grandiose and demanded that the "Shadow War" be wrapped up quickly. Isabella soon bowed out, leaving Dan Mishkin and co-editor Barbara Randall to tie things up.
The dismaying resolution, in HAWKMAN #12, ends (temporarily) Thanagar's adventurism on Earth, but culminates in Katar deliberately choosing to leave the planet's new military government in power, with his father's old friend Rul Pintar taking the place of the previous ruling junta. Conceding that the Thanagarian people will be "helpless" without a dictatorship, Katar announces, "You lead them, Rul Pintar! Then at least their next dictator will be a benevolent one who remembers Thanagar's greatness--and can perhaps give a little bit of it back to them!" Thus, what had begun as a paranoid thriller about a secret alien invasion concludes with Hawkman's explicit endorsement of fascist dictatorship, after which he and Shayera fly back to Earth so it won't be their problem. Yikes!
Having lost any sense of narrative direction along with its moral compass, the book lasted only five more issues and was canceled in late 1987. Isabella says some of his original ideas were later recycled for "other company-wide crossovers," which I assume refers primarily to the 1988 INVASION! event, in which Thanagar was one of the invaders.

Horror Movie of the Day: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
There’s a psychiatric condition known as the Capgras Syndrome: the irrational belief a person close to us has been replaced by an identical stranger. Tied to some fairly intense forms of mental illness, it can easily spiral out of control and create a sense of isolation and paranoia. But, what if multiple people suddenly started saying this at the same time?
When a strange species of flower starts appearing across the bushes and trees across the city of San Francisco, health inspector Matthew Bennel has to make this question to himself. His close friend and coworker Elizabeth Driscoll is apparently experiencing this situation: her partner Geoffrey is suddenly acting cold and distant. Matthew’s initial suggestion is for her to talk his psychiatrist friend David Kibner, but similar stories keep popping up. And then a strange, incomplete looking body appears on the spa of another of his friends. That also seems to try to mimick them.
It’s clear this is no mere delusion. Something more sinister is going on.
A remake of the eponymous 1956 classic (which is in turn based on the novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney), this movie takes the same core story idea of its source of inspiration and flips it on its head by simply changing the setting. Instead of taking place within the confines of a small town, having the story take place in an urban environment changes the story dynamics and even themes. Instead of an outwardly placid town where people become strangers, you get the cold strangers becoming uncannily close to each other as suddenly the city masses are all staring at you in an urban alienation nightmare.
It’s a fantastic remake of an already great movie, upping the ante while still paying respectful homage to what came before. With a stiffling, dissonant sound design, the cynicism of 70's cinema, and a splice of body horror the end result is an all time great of the genre.

How far is Kryptonverse's Earth development wise? I know it's around 2012 in-verse, but I imagine with all the agencies and geniuses dotting it it'd be closer to where we are now technologically - if not even further ahead.
Fun question! I think it's a very uneven sort of thing. In many aspects, they're just like us, back eleven years - the general sociopolitical climate is similar, cultural movements have happened in practically the same way, the world's economy is (considering the Tony Starks of the world) fairly "normal".
Definitely some areas where they're ahead, though; off the top of my head, I think their technology is generally at least 25-50 years ahead of ours, especially when it comes to stuff like robotics and energy sources - for example, the Human Torch (the WWII version, not Johnny) was a fully functional android back in the early 40s (even if he was way ahead of his time), SHIELD had their LMDs back in the 70s, and (not to spoil things) the Iron Man suit was far from the first successful attempt at a mechanical exoskeleton (though of course, it was by far the best and most advanced ever). Obviously, they're ahead when it comes to space exploration as well, thanks to SWORD's partnership with the Kree and the many advances made by reverse engineering other alien vessels and technologies.
Societally, I think it's obvious that there's a bit less of an...edge, when it comes to discrimination - part of it is that I don't typically focus on it, but also I'm pretty sure back in 2012 you'd still get a few more raised eyebrows if you were openly LGBT+ than the way it's portrayed in the Kverse.
There's other stuff like the fact that it is a known fact that alien life exists now, or the necessary improvements to infrastructure (and more specifically, repairing it) that come along with the existence of superpowered individuals, but all things considered, Earth-199999's people aren't really very different from you and me. Given time, we'll adapt to pretty much anything, including superheroes and alien invasions.

hey i really love your game recs and was wondering if you had anything for the theme of 'changing not necessarily for the better'? like the idea that yeah trauma can bring you and your friends closer, but sometimes it pushes you apart and its no ones fault. and if possible something either set in reality or low fantasy/magical realism?
THEME: Deteriorating Characters
I'm not sure how many of these really fit what you were looking for. I think at least two of them are outside of genre, but the idea of characters on a downward spiral usually happens firmly within horror games. In the meantime, perhaps you can still find some inspiration from these games.

Cannot Leave Each-other, by Liorbrary.
One of you is a human parent. The other is their werewolf child.  When you are together the werewolf always magically maintains their human form.  While you are apart things have the potential to be complicated.
There is a shared understanding that if you are separated for too long one of you will die. The exact details of this death are unclear, but you feel it in your bones to be true and looming.
This game is about a relationship between two people who need each-other but might not necessarily be able to maintain a healthy relationship. Something interrupts their normal day-to-day, and they’ll either figure out how to stay together, or they’ll be forced apart.
This game has a potential for tragedy, as well as a resolution that isn’t happy in very many senses of the word. Even if your players stay together, their relationship might suffer for it. If you are looking for a game that will allow you to navigate emotional topics in a setting where death is on the line, you should check out Cannot Leave Each-Other.
Alien Omen, by Ashy Feet.
Alien Omen is a Forged in the Dark game about a pending alien invasion. Characters start off as City Slicks or Rural Rangers who will be introduced to the alien menace preparing it's assault. As players lean into learning about the unknown, they gain power but at the cost of their own corruption.
With every alien encounter, your characters will add ticks to their Corruption track, as it becomes harder and harder to ignore the alien invaders. At 3 Corruption, the players are faced with a choice: there are three factions to which they could choose to join, and doing so will require an initiation ritual that both gives you a new ability, but also causes Harm to the players.
If you want the full experience of Alien Omen, You need to check out the Character Keeper found on the creator’s website.
Last Shooting, by My name is Grant.
Two pilots can change your destiny. Two massive war machines can change your future. Two players can share the happiness.
Last Shooting is a 2-player RPG that uses a unique system to tell stories about Mech battles. Using a customized version of the Final Bid engine, Last Shooting builds the characters and defines them more sharply during each scene of play. Then, it gives you the power to destroy any of those aspects to propel yourself to victory.
Last Shooting is meant for single session play, and tends to take 2-3 hours. And it provides the flexibility for no two sessions to play out the same way.
Define your pilot, and destroy them in turn. The battle hinges on what remains.
This game asks players to consider how destructive this final fight will be for your characters, as you will have to actually destroy parts of your “datafile” or character sheet, in order to increase your chances of success. You may win against your opponent - but at what cost?
It Breaks You, by Crab Dominion.
It Breaks You is based on the slasher movie monsters of the 70’s and 80’s - a lumbering, unstoppable force chases you, and you must do whatever it takes to survive. Will you help others, or help yourself? It doesn't matter; in the end, It Breaks You.
It Breaks You features simple mechanics and a one-page layout, allowing you to jump right into the action. All you need to start is 3d6, 3d4 and 2-5 players.
In this game, your characters have two stats: Empathy and Apathy. Regardless of whether or not you help others or help yourself, you’ll be required to roll in order to determine whether your acts drain away at either of your attributes. It’s in your best interests to help yourself, but regardless of your attempts, once you lose all of your pips in one or the other, It Breaks You.
Broken, by Ben Wallis.
Broken is a tabletop roleplaying game of tragic romance for two players about broken objects and broken hearts. Create two characters in a relationship and over the course of ten scenes, you will explore the ways in which the things you loved about each other crack until everything about your relationship is broken--including the ten real-life, physical objects you will break over the game's ten scenes.
In Broken, the relationship will always end.  Although the tragic conclusion is inevitable, there is endless potential for healing and self-discovery along the way.
Broken is an emotionally deep game that explores themes of memory, identity, and loss.  Broken is also full of empathy-building, hope, and healing. Broken is a game that recreates the raw, visceral experience of going through a break-up along with the catharsis of smashing objects, all while telling a beautiful story along the way.
This game is theoretically one of change not necessarily for the better, in the sense that the relationship doesn’t get better - it ends. Players will break items as they navigate memories as the characters remind each-other of events they experienced together and how they weren’t what they thought they were. As they do this, traits that represent what what each character liked about each-other are burned away. If you want a tragic game that gives you room for catharsis, I recommend Broken.
Games I’ve recommended in the past.
Locus, by CobblePath Games
Fears & Fathoms, by curatrix-ribston.
After the Rain, by Desk and Dorks.

The Previous God’s Revelations
Tenkuu Shinpan Arrive ch70 and 71, just transcribing the French translation (Kana) to English.
The pics are screenshots I took of magapoke when the chapter was free to read.
Note: where I wrote “mechanism” the French actually says “organism”. I however chose to write “mechanism” because it seems to be the same term used in the original series, chapter 50, which has been translated as mechanism by Mangabox. As I do not have access to the Seven Seas translation, I chose to use the Mangabox term.
Tumblr media
Chapter 70 - Page 14
Panel 1- Here.. I must be in my mental palace... It really looks like the cosmos, I wonder why...
Panel 2- Maybe because the human brain and the cosmos are alike? What even is the cosmos in the first place? This is fascinating...
Panel 3- Stop! This is not the time to think about that! I have to go back there to help the others...
Page 15-
Panel 1- No, Senya... The role you had to play has been over for a while...
Tumblr media
Page 16-
Panel 1- You need to keep wandering just a bit more... until the “winner”’s emergence... If you make your consciousness emerge right now... There’s no doubt that you will disappear...
Panel 2- Who’s talking to me? Ah... this time it’s an alien!
Panel 3- Stop saying nonsense... I am...
Tumblr media
Chapter 71- page 1
...in this dimension... and of course in the parallel world in which you’ve entered... I.. even before that this situation was born... In this death game organized in this world... I am...
Tumblr media
Page 2-
Panel 1- The winner. You can consider me the “previous” god...
Panel 3- Huh? I don’t understand anything you’re saying...
Panel 4- You didn’t know that you were in a mechanism to create a god, didn’t you? What use is there for me to leave traces of my fights on the signboards if it’s not to create my legend?
Page 3-
Panel 1- Well, saying “god” is a bit much... Beings that are born in this world are merely functional: their role is to eliminate threats... The fact I came out as the winner of this game complicated everything.. I didn’t intend to act until danger appeared.
Panel 2- However... The world which was supposed to have ended slowly reactivated... That doesn’t concern me.. This is a bit like it demanded new sacrifices...
Panel 4- At first, I thought I wasn’t recognized as a god, but... I was probably mistaken... Because in fact, to ward off the dangers that are born in this dimension, several gods are needed.
Tumblr media
Page 4-
Panel 1- Wait a second... This mechanism... this world... It was created, but... By whom?
Panel 2- That, I do not know... A being that’s in an even higher dimension? Unless it’s only a phenomenon, similar to the universe, born from a vibration between being and nothingness?
Panel 3- Or even... a thing born from the collective consciousness of more and more numerous humans demanding a god?
Panel 4- The collective consciousness of humans?
Page 5-
Panel 1- But I’m getting off topic... I learned afterwards that there existed another world. And I also found out Yuri Honjo’s existence, a kind of devil in that world, and the battles she had fought. I assume Sniper already talked to you about it.
Panel 2- So I then wanted to oppose her. She used a different method from mine to stop the deadly game: the invasion. And I disliked that immensely.
Panel 3- This is the reason I guided Taisei to this world, he who was wandering through dimensions. Because of Yuri Honjo’s actions, he had become powerless and I felt bad seeing him like that.
Panel 4- Wait a second... If I sum it up... All the horrors we had to go through were your fault?
Tumblr media
Page 6-
Panel 1- I indeed carry part of that responsibility. This is why I’m currently protecting you right now... I gave you powers, to you but also to numerous other people. Senya...
Panel 2- This is you I pity the most here. Because you’re the one Taisei used the most.
Panel 3- Who? Me?
Panel 4- The school’s arrival was Tenma’s doing, but Taisei predicted it. He had been watching you [plural] for a while. And he spotted you on the school roof.
Page 7-
Panel 1- He then decided to make out of you a being that would fight with all his strength in the middle of the despair and whose prowess would create a huge increase in energy. Tenma was already acting like that, but Taisei went even further. He really tried to create a hero in this world.
Panel 3- And a hero cannot die easily... This is why Taisei led you to Sniper. To Sniper’s spirit, which nobody had seized... Your very meeting had been arranged by Taisei!
Panel 4- Then, for you to understand the rules of this world... he put a young girl on your way and he pushed her to suicide.
Tumblr media
Page 8-
Panel 1- Indeed... Your friend too...
Page 9-
Panel 1- Taisei created beings of “stage 1″.. Of course, there are other ones apart from Tenma or her men that are inferior to them. They’re not strong, but they make the perfect pawns for Taisei... The one who killed your friends was one of them... The goal was to generate despair in you.
Panel 2- A hero plunged in despair by an external force... This is what you are. However, to be used and then emptied of all energy, even I think it’s too cruel.
Panel 3- After all, if everything went according to Taisei’s wishes, it would be no fun. This is the reason I gave you additional strength... To others, too: to the astronauts, to Kyouko Oribe, to the super cute blind girl...
Panel 4- What?! To Kyouko too?! So she really is in this world too...
Tumblr media
Page 10-
Panel 1- You went beyond what Taisei expected... But you’ve been “killed”... And your consciousness is on the verge of disappearing...Your brain and vital functions have been regenerated by Kuon Shinzaki, but this goes way beyond now... If you recuperate your consciousness and continue to fight, you will end up disappearing.
Panel 2- I advise you to stay here for some time, where it’s calm... I’ll keep you up to date with how the fights are going. We still have some time before Yuri Honjo manages the “fusion”... But if it really happens..
Panel 3- Yes, I know... I will have a chance to survive, but... What will happen to Kyouko and my classmates?
Panel 4- Kyouko is fighting “Stage 2″ beings... I don’t know what will happen to her. The middle-school students have largely tasted despair... Taisei should act soon and appropriate this energy...
Page 11-
Panel 1- In that case, let me out right now. I have faced many hardships in this world! I cannot abandon the others and behave like a loser!
Panel 2- Behave like a loser? In the setting of this deadly game, I admit this is a detail I quickly forgot about.
Panel 3- For you, the way we appear is more important that our own lives and efficiency? Still, if you disappear, there’ll be nothing left of all that.
Tumblr media
Page 12-
Panel 1- Wrong! I refuse that the universe I love will keep this memory of me!
Panel 2- That’s right, there’s still a trace. As quantum information.. More simply put, people’s memories...
Panel 3- If you disappear, your being will be scattered... It’ll become impossible to put it back together, for Yuri Honjo or for me. And you still want to go back?
Page 13-
Panel 2- Well, fine...
Panel 3- Of god I only have the name.. I certainly am unable to predict all quantum movements. I am curious to see which phenomenons your action will bring.
Panel 4- And so I am sending you back... to your universe.

Sci Fi and Me Part 2 :Favorite Films Sub Categories
Gonna talk about my favorites in specific types of Sci Fi films.Oh and since I already mentioned they shall be excluded so I can talk about other favorites
First Contact(Friendly aliens)
The Day the Earth Stood : A classic more about the message about paranoia and human violence then aliens(In fact Klattu is purposefully human looking ) ,where a messenger from the stars is treated with hostility .Also Gort is a pretty nifty take on a robot
Tumblr media
Alien Invasion (Malevolent aliens come to Earth)
They Live : There are some great ones but I had to go with They Live because....The Aliens have won and most of the human race dont even realize it .The aliens have infiltrated human society ,told humanity what to think ,and have rewarded the greedy and it is up to our lower class drifter heroes to show the truth. Its a mixture of satire and damn good sci fi
Tumblr media
Time Travel:
Time After Time:HG Welles travels to the 70's to catch Jack the Ripper .....That premise alone secures it a spot but it is also just a fun movie with great performances
Tumblr media
Oh God What has Science Doooooooooooone(Humanity makes something that goes wrong):
Frankenstein:I love Forbidden Planet but I have to go with FRankenstein, this 1931 classic is a personal favorite of mine, with brillaint performances by Boris Karloff and Colin Clive

Let explore the Horror world...
Horror Movies
Science fiction horror films, often associated with catastrophe or apocalyptic films or alien films, came into vogue in the 50's and (apart from the Universal Pictures films already seen, directed by Jack Arnold) was one of their main characters Roger Corman, director of the B series (low-budget films), specializing in the free and colorful adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe stories: The Fall of the House of Usher (1960), Pit and the Pendulum (1961), The Obsession (1962), Tales of Terror (1962), The Raven (1963), The Masque of the Red Death (1964) and The Tomb of Ligeia (1964); and an adaptation of a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, The Palace of the Spirits and some B-movies usually related to science fiction like It Conquered the World (1956), Emissary from another world (1957), Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), Wasp Woman (1959), The Enchanted Sea Monster (1961) and The Man with X-Ray Eyes (1963)

Boris Karloff in Frankenstein's Bride.
Special effects technician Ray Harryhausen was an indispensable figure when it came to disaster and giant monster cinema. Influenced by King Kong, he made a number of notable films: The Great Gorilla (1949) by Ernest B. Schoedsack, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) by Eugène Lourié, It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955) by Robert Gordon, Earth vs .the Flying Saucers (1956) by Fred F. Sears, The Beast from Another Planet (1957) by Nathan Juran and the dinosaur film The Valley of Gwangi (1969) by Jim O'Connolly.
Other notable films from this period include: Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Byron Haskins The War of the Worlds (1953) (based on the novel of the same name by H.G. Wells), Them! (1954) by Gordon Douglas and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) by Don Siegel. The mix of horror and science fiction that H. P. Lovecraft translated into literature resurfaces in the late '70s with Philip Kaufman's version of the last-mentioned volume Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and the excellent Alien: The Eighth Passenger (1979 ) again on ) by Ridley Scott, which chronicles the terrifying battle against an indestructible alien monster aboard a space freighter. The film spawned several sequels and crossovers. From the 1980s, The Thing (1982) by horror film master John Carpenter stood out among many others; the Canadian Cube (1997) by Vincenzo Natali and Señales (2002) by Indian-American M. Night Shyamalan.

Do you have specific horror films that you personally believe are "must see" when it comes to the genre? If you have a few that you believe are "required viewing" I'd love to know what they are. You just seem like you've seen tons of horror movies and I'm still fairly new to the genre and am curious what your thoughts are!
yeah! so this list isn't necessarily my all-time favs or anything--more so like these are horror movie touchstones that are useful to watch to get a comprehensive look at the genre. i'll put a little commentary on some of them too. and stars for my personal favs in case this list is too long and overwhelming lol
20s-60s: classics
Nosferatu (1922)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Psycho (1960) - tw for being especially ableist (if the name didn't tip you) and transphobic. But it's one of the most iconic movies, and Janet Leigh is the original scream queen so!
Rosemary's Baby (1968) - FUCK Polanski and def watch this illegally BUT it is very influential to later horror and it's nice to understand the references/homages
Night of the Living Dead (1968) ⭐

The Exorcist (1973)
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) ⭐

Ginger Snaps (2000) ⭐

🍁🍂🍁🍂Alright, since its mid-September, its time for my annual spooky movie reccomedation list! I include ratings, and I can include trigger warnings for any of these films upon request as well! I'm also looking for horror movies to watch myself, so feel free to comment/ask any as well!! So, here we go, in no particular order...🍁🍂🍁🍂
Tumblr media
Fantasy/sci-fi horror:
The Thing 1982 [R]: A group of scientists find a shapeshifting alien underneath the ice in Antarctica, and they just survive as it imitates them. Trust no one. The Thing is one of my favorite movies in general. Its scary, retro, and the special effects are insane. It reminds me of classic Lovecraft, but better. Very terrifying. 10/10
Pan's Labyrinth 2006 [R]: During the Spanish Civil War, a young girl named Ofelia enters a world of twisted fantasy while above, her step-father's brutality causes trouble in the midst of a rebellion. Genuinely a beautiful movie. It's like a fairy-tale, and sometimes you forget it's a horror movie. It's simply magical, but frighteningly real. If you love classic fantasy, monsters, history, and horror, you'll love this movie. 10/10
Alien 1979 [R]: A team on a shipping vessel in soace come in contact with a parasitic alien within the clausterphobic confines of the ship. A classic, and it's still absolutely terrifying. Sharp insight on early 80's consumerism (in more than one sense), and a marvel of alien horror. Its very claustrophobic, tense, and 100% worth watching, especially if you love scifi. 10/10.
Aliens 1986 [R]: Continuing the story of Alien, space marines must investigate a distress signal from a colony, and what they find is more horrifying than they could have imagined. Full of retro action, humorous quips, scares, and plenty of bullet spray, it's a terrifying and fun watch. I enjoyed it just as much as the original, and its just awesome, while being scary at times. 10/10
Annihilation 2018 [R]: After the mysterious death of her husband, a Biologist goes into Area X to discover what horrifying cosmic entity his team found there. Not nearly as good, or accurate as the book (I CANT reccomend the Southern Reach trilogy enough), but this movie genuinely frightened me at points and the setting is simply beautiful. Its clever, creepy, and it's a strange watch. 8/10
Signs 2002 [PG-13]: After strange symbols appear in the cornfields on a family's farm, they must protect each other, and their faith, during the invasion. Love this movie, it's just spooky enough, but outside if the monsters, the people in this movie are what really matter. It's compelling, and a beautiful story. Simply excellent. Plus you'll know where the screaming guy in a closet meme comes from after seeing this one. 10/10
A Quiet Place 2018 [PG-13]: Could you survive a world where making a single sound could spell your death? Monsters decend upon the Abbot family, just as a baby is on the way. One of my favorite movies ever. Its beautiful and ABSOLUTELY horrifying. I think I forgot about eating my popcorn while watching this one. Overall, the desperate survival of the Abbots is heartwarming, but oh so stressful. If you can, PLEASE watch the sequel right after this one. 10/10
A Quiet Place 2 2021 [PG-13]: The Abbots face new challenges as they traverse a devestated landscape, and monsters wait around every dark corner for them. An EXCELLENT sequel. I caught myself actually going "NOOO AAAA" at some points, and its totally a worthy sequel to the scares in the first one. Again, great story, great characters, great cinematography, great message. 10/10.
Coraline 2009 [PG]: Coraline Jones, unhappy with moving to a new house, suddenly finds a whimsical world in a little hidden tunnel inside the house, but she learns the sinister truth behind the candy-colored world beyond the wall. Dont let the stop-motion animation confuse you; this movie is terrifying. A classic from my childhood, and its a treat to watch every Halloween. The Beldam has to be on the list of the most horrifying villains ever. 10/10
Zombies, ghosts, ghouls, and everything in between:
The Haunting 1963 [G]: Based on the novel The Haunting of Hill House, a group of people must stay in a supposedly haunted mansion. Eleanor, one of the women, suddenly believes that the house is talking directly to her. One of the many adaptations of the book, it's spooky, and it's very disturbing, while also having a nice theme. Perfect for setting the mood on a October night. 8/10
Night of The Living Dead 1990 [R]: Survivors take shelter in an abandoned farm house while the undead attack. Can they work together, or let their own prejudices get the best of them? I havent seen the original yet, but I love this movie. Very scary, and its directed by Tom Savini, so lots of good ol zombie gore. Not only that, there's a good bit of social commentary here on racism. The classic was the original zombie film. 9/10.
Dawn of The Dead 1978 [R]: As the undead rise up, survivors take to a shopping mall in order to survive. I don't know how to describe this movie's vibe. It has this weird retro 70's feel, mixed with uncanny horror. It's campy at times, but it doesn't take away the scariness. Very fun in a weird way, and its an on-the-nose satire of american consumerism. 10/10
Train To Busan 2016 [R]: While the world crumbles around them, a small group of survivors must learn to protect each other on a train headed to Busan. Seriously, please watch this one. It's completely unique to any zombie film I've seen. It's scary, but you genuinely care about the characters, and its VERY intense. Love this one. 10/10
Murder and ect:
Scream 1990 [R]: A masked serial killer stalks high school students in middle class suburbia. Its a parody of the modern horror genre, clever and scary all at once. I enjoyed it as a classic and I liked the commentary on how violence with no essence effects people, especially when glorified with horror films. Definitely not for everyone, but its good never the less. 8/10
Wait Until Dark 1967 [NR (I give it a PG-13)]: A gang of criminals looking for heroin attack the home of a blind woman, and it turns into a horrifying game of back and forth between them, until it can go on no longer. Literally one of the best thriller movies ever. Genuinely scary, and genuinely clever. This was actually the first film I saw Audrey Hepburn act in. Super tense near the end, I was biting my nails the whole time. 10/10
The Village 2004 [PG-13]: A rural community is faced with a hard decision as the monsters in the woods leave bloody warnings around their small town. I watch this one every autumn. Its atmospheric, the score is breathtaking, and its a great story. Its beautiful, gently frightening, and its overall a love story. I love this one a lot, even though I know a lot of people didnt like it. Don't go in expecting a great twist at the end, and you'll enjoy it. 10/10
Jane Eyre 2011 [PG-13]: Jane Eyre becomes the governness to an estate, and find a dark secret there. Not necessarily horror, but its gothic and absolutely beautiful. Its the perfect october movie. I love it lots. Nothing hits different than a rainy october day, a cup of chai tea, and this movie playing. 10/10
TV Series:
Stranger Things 2016- [PG-13]: After a child is taken by a supernatural force, the small town community of Hawkins must search for answers and find him before its too late, but as they search, a horrifying conspiracy comes to life before them. I adore this series. Its a love letter to the 80s. Cant reccomend it enough. 10/10
The Twilight Zone 1959-1964 [PG]: A serialized series featuring many different stories ranging from scifi to horror and everything inbetween. Its genius honestly. Each story is compelling, and thought provoking. A great Halloween watch. 10/10
The Walking Dead 2010- (seasons 1 & 2) [R]: A sheriff wakes up from a coma to find himself in a terrifying world of the undead. Its a decent series, at least in the first two seasons! Its pretty scary. Its great if you like zombie movies! 7/10
Over The Garden Wall 2014 [PG]: Two brothers find themselves lost within the world of the Unknown, a place where time is blended together and reality isn't quite right. Ok, real talk here. Its my favorite series of all time. I could go on and on and on about it. If you haven't seen it, please I beg you. Theres nothing like it. Its literally the BEST autumn show to watch. Clever, funny, lightly disturbing, deep, nostalgic...its fantastic. 11/10
So, there you have it. Huge list of horror movies I've enjoyed and actually reccomend. I have seen quite a few more than this (Halloween, Dawn of the Dead 2004, Nightmare on Elm Street, ect), but I specifically picked out the ones I love the most. Enjoy! And have a great autumn.

The original guide for watching Doctor Who, torchwood.& the Sarah Jane adventures is wrong. The episode titles in our dates don't lineup properly. So the episode titles and numbers don't match because the list was done in three separate columns. I have a better method that will get the perfect list for people who are old and new whovian's. Also this list is re-organized into one single column instead of three separate columns to make it easier for whovian 's to follow. This version of the list is modified for the USA.

On the occasion of John Varley's quadruple bypass
Tumblr media
John Varley, a beloved, versatile, funny, and wildly imaginative sf writer, recently had a quadruple bypass and is recovering well, but this is America, so he's also in need of financial support through his recovery.
https://varley.net/nonfiction/news/sending-prayers-to-the-cosmos/
You can donate to Varley's recovery fund via Paypal, which will support the Varley family's new expenditures (Dan Prall already helped them by buying the recliner chair John's doctors want him to sleep in).

When I heard Varley had been hospitalized, I felt that cold grue in my stomach, the dread that has haunted me not merely through the covid months, but also over the past decade, as the cohort of writers I grew up on have entered their 60s and 70s.
The news that Varley's surgery was successful came as an incredible relief - and with it, the realization that I didn't need to wait for an obit to write an appreciation of the writers whose work I love so dearly.
Varley is hugely influential upon me. I could never have written my 2003 debut novel DOWN AND OUT IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM without stories like his 1976 OVERDRAWN AT THE MEMORY BANK - a story that prefigured many of cyberpunk's central tropes.
Varley's short fiction is incredible - not just Hugo winners like THE PERSISTENCE OF VISION but also perfect gems like THE OPHIUCHI HOTLINE and THE BARBIE MURDERS - but they all add up to even more than the sum of their parts.
Much of Varley's work has been set in his "Eight Worlds" universe, where humans have been evicted from Earth by a mysterious alien race called "The Invaders," with the rump of the species being pushed out to the Moon, nearby planets, and the asteroid belts.
Varley's stories happily plunder one another for details of this scenario, lifting characters, technologies, and settings, but they make no pretense to being a "future history" of internal consistency.
The Eight Worlds stories and novels are only consistent with one another when it makes the story better - but when it doesn't, they jettison inter-tale consistency in favor of narrative. For me, the fact that writers could do this came as a jaw-dropping revelation.
Varley annihilated the pretense that an sf writer is some kind of oracle who knows the future - a bit of ghastly fatalism in that it implies that the future is knowable and thus will arrive irrespective of our choices today.
Instead, Varley treats his stories as entertainments and allegories, freed from the "Robert A Timeline" constraints, which allows him to collage his best ideas into new works, a kind of fan-service that is pure delight, freed from the tedious pretense of consistency.
This revelation led directly to my novel Walkaway, which incorporates ideas, props and scenarios from DOWN AND OUT IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM, EASTERN STANDARD TRIBE, and my other novels, without lumbering the story with the necessity to make it fit in with their continuity.
Varley is an unabashed plunderer, particularly of Heinlein, mashing up Heinlein tropes with contemporary ideas, progressive politics, and other delights to make new works that both pick apart and celebrate Heinlein's work.
This was always lurking in his work, but it became very explicit with novels like STEEL BEACH (1992), an absolute ROMP of a book that crosses THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS with the then-ascendant cyberpunk genre conventions (which Varley helped invent) to outstanding effect.
I just re-read STEEL BEACH and found it every bit as delightful as I had in the early 90s, when I hand sold hundreds of copies of it as a bookseller. It's also the direct ancestor of Ian McDonald's MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS-riffing trilogy.

Varley's work embodies the collaborative spirit of sf, as tropes are ruthlessly plundered and reworked  without apology. It's a process that's wonderfully described in my mentor Judith Merril's Hugo-winning memoir, "Better to Have Loved":
https://memex.craphound.com/2003/08/11/science-fiction-prefigured-the-creative-commons/
"Whereas in other literary fields you wouldn’t dare take an idea from another writer and use it, because that would be considered plagiarism, science fiction people loved to build on each other’s stories.
"The business of giving away ideas and promoting other people’s work was a part of the community at large. The Futurians did this to an amazing extent. For example, every Futurian had a pen name that included the family name Conway. A good number of the stories that appeared in science fiction magazines at the time were written by someone-or-other Conway."
In other words, amateurs plagiarize, artists steal.
Think of the way that Varley's symbiotic alien spacesuits were beautfully plundered by Spider and Jeanne Robinson for their own Hugo-winning STARDANCE.

I found so many revelations in Varley's work: just the proliferation of "disneylands" on the Moon was an wonderfully economical bit of storytelling, an entire implied history of a notoriously bullying corporation in tatters after an invasion, all in a single, lower-case "d."
And then there's the RED THUNDER books, wherein Varley took apart and reassmbled Heinlein's "juvies" as parables about the paranoid, post-9/11 America, a country that occupied Iraq, Afghanistan and itself:
https://memex.craphound.com/2006/04/17/the-novel-heinlein-would-have-written-about-gw-bushs-america/
I don't think I'd have written LITTLE BROTHER - a book I thought of as an anti-authoritarian riff on HAVE SPACESUIT, WILL TRAVEL - if I hadn't read RED THUNDER.
Varley's work is worth aspiring to: a perfect mix of wildly imaginative and just plain *fun*. His most recent novel, IRONTOWN BLUES, is an Eight Worlds hard boiled noir novel starring an uplifted dog detective.

Varley runs a shop for signed copies of his books, though shipping is slow ("We are strictly a kitchen-table operation. Your book will be carefully selected from our shelves, lovingly hand-wrapped, and decorated with real US Postage stamps").

If you're looking for a title to order from the shop, may I recommend 2004's "The John Varley Reader: 30 Years of Short Fiction."
