I think most of us have a specific year or arc that sort of encapsulates what BIONICLE is for us. Typically it seems to be the year that we first started getting into the line, right at the start of an arc, so I've noticed '01 and '06 tend to be the most popular years. For me, that year is 2003. I was very small the previous two years, so 2003 is crystallized in my head as when BIONICLE first became my thing. Specifically because of the Mask of Light movie. It was the only BIONICLE movie we owned (on VHS, woo), and I couldn't read until I was much older, so Mask of Light was the story of BIONICLE to me for the longest time. It was also right when I started getting my own sets, so I had most of the Toa Nuva before any other sets began to add to my collection.

That dinky little movie that's a condensed rehash of Lord of the Rings was one of my favorite things. I remember watching it frequently, and I already rewatch most films. Later on, when I could read, one of the first books I got was Chronicles #4: Tales of the Masks, which helped solidify the Toa Nuva as my favorite team because of their interactions with each other. But what helped that book click was how the ending led directly to the beginning of Mask of Light, with Jaller scampering off to find Takua.

So yeah. For about four years of my life, until I learned to read properly, the main story I had for BIONICLE was the Mask of Light. The characters, the story beats, the theming around Takua accepting his responsibilities and becoming his truest self, the interplay of light and darkness- all very basic stuff, but it's formed the core of what BIONICLE means to me. That's why I've had my Makuta and Nuva revamps assembled for... about eight years now. The whole storyline always goes back to the seven Toa against the Makuta and his sons.
