as much as I was/am rooting for Donnie it is kind of baffling to me that Abed is losing. like he was the og. the blueprint.

I was drawing and put on this compilation on the side and. by god he really is just autistic as fuck. he was one of, if not the first that I saw depicted in a show. but I kind of understand why people would prefer Donnie because he's a more recent and positive example. not that they never showed Abed in a positive light (in fact its kind of the opposite. hes humanised n loved for who he is in so many different instances. having whole eps built around it. theres literally multiple eps where his autistic swag charms ppl. anyways)

but y'know. tone of the show is very different, and can come across more mean spirited than w Donnie sometimes. but seeing all of these moments happening back to back I feel like Abed's portrayal is a lot more real because they can actually say it. its not like they are (they kind f just. use synonyms/dance around it. i dont think they ever actually call him autistic but they do say aspergers a bunch, we dont need to get into why that term is outdated n bad just. google it. but also this show is like 13 years old so. cant rlly blame em too much ig?) but anyway. abed is just. allowed to be more blatant which i like. not that donnie isnt blatant but. idk man. why are we even pitting 2 bad bitches against eachother. love n peace on plane autism.

So like

He's just as completely unhinged as Rise Don, he's just better at hiding it. Sometimes.

He and Raph are twins.

He needs to drink approximately 4 litres of coffee before he is capable of thought

He's so fucking suspicious of any and everyone who could possibly hurt his brothers and Usagi got the brunt of it lmao

Does not help that Leo and Usagi definitely had those 🏳️‍🌈 vibes and he does not like the idea of his big brother dating anyone at all, let alone this guy who might have poisoned him.

He'll be like *giggling and kicking his feet* whilst listening to death metal screaming about disestablishing the government

He can cook. Unfortunately it all tastes like water somehow. Like he could put in an entire bag of spice in and it'd still somehow taste of water. At least it's not on fire like Leo's cooking.

He will only swear when shit is REAL. Like if donny is swearing, you KNOW shits going down.

He may or may not keep radioactive substances under his bed but what Leo doesn't know won't hurt him probably.

He'll be doing the most basic shit like soldering two wires together or plugging something in and tell his brothers the most insane technobabble possible, just to fuck with them. They think he's god because he turned the router back on when the WiFi stopped working.

He taught Raph how to maintain his shell cycle because he got sick of fixing it everytime Raph broke it.

Do not leave him and Mikey in the same room unsupervised someone will die. They're both unhinged in their own special ways, but they bounce ideas off each other in the worst way. It'll probably end with copious amounts of nuclear materials and/or explosives.

He puts up with Casey entirely because Raph likes him, at least at the beginning. Casey 100% just walks into everything in his lab. Like walks in, says "what's that" and it immediately breaks. Casey is now banned from the lab lol.

Autism

Definitely has a bunch of random poisons hidden in his ninja gear which he doesn't ever use he promises, Leo

Definitely stronger than he seems. He hauls bits of machinery around all day, if he had any interest in it he would definitely go up against Raph in sheer strength

Will take things literally but that's a hc I have for like... Everyone except April and Mikey

Has very strong opinions about welding. Like he can and will argue for hours about why his specific favourite type is better that everything else.

His computer runs on his very own, patent pending, DonnyOS.

He also invented his own programming language called DonnyScript and it is incomprehensible to everyone except him and made April cry.

so i just want to talk about the whole donnie and april thing from the 2012 series since i have a lot of thoughts on them both and need somewhere to just. get it out my system.

so off the bat im gonna say i’m pretty neutral about the april/donnie ship. i.. don’t really care for it but if it’s there it’s not gonna overly bother me. i’m pretty much on the fence for most things tmnt ship related (though, big exception for woodyangelo just cus. lol) that being said i do have some thoughts about how it was handled in the 2012 show.

as most people might agree, the writing for these two wasn’t great. i think, just in my humble opinion, that the writers kinda ping ponged back and forth depending on fandom criticism of the ship. one minute the relationship seemed to be slowly developing, a nice easy slow burn and then it’d take a sharp turn and it was back to a lot of uncomfortable pining and uncertainty as to where they would both end up. i think the writers wanted to appease both ends of the fandom here by making it somewhat ambiguous but it kinda blew up in their faces. big time.

so then you have the people who put all the blame on april for this. “she’s leading donnie on!” “she’s playing with both donnie and casey!” “she just wants the attention!” and, yeah. maybe. but here’s my defence: (bad writing aside for a moment, let’s pretend that all of this was done on purpose) april doesn’t know what she wants. when we meet april in the show it’s evident that she’s a little dorky and uncool and she doesn’t have ANY friends. she has irma but it seems to be one of those friendships built out of pure convenience. “oh you don’t have friends, i don’t have friends. cool. let’s hang out.” in every scene they have together it’s awkward and weird because they don’t really seem to click. april has like, as little social skills as the turtles. she doesn’t have friends let alone have TWO guys show her any appreciation and affection. how is she supposed to know how to deal with all that? she’s a teenage girl, feelings are complicated.

and some people might blame donnie. “he kept persisting even when she gave clear hints” “he was being a weirdo about it” “he made her uncomfortable” donnie is a teenage boy who happens to be a mutant. a mutant that lives underground and had never even MET a girl until they saved april. donnie’s only point of reference for romance is what he’s most likely seen on tv or in books. it’s that really cheesy affectionate stuff that might work in movies, but in real life is just strange. donnie has even less social skills that april. he’s only ever had his brothers and dad to talk to. he doesn’t know how to communicate his feelings properly because up until he met april, he probably never even knew what it was to have a crush on somebody

my headcanon for these two is that donnie is clearly autistic. he’s very overly empathetic towards april but can’t understand why his efforts aren’t paying off like he thinks they will. i think april being a young teenage girl with a lot on her plate, might not recognise why donnie is acting this way. ive seen a lot of people also headcanon that april is aromantic which i totally 100% love and agree with. i don’t think she recognises this in the way donnie recognises his own autism. it causes them to clash, and neither of them really understand why that is, and can’t quite communicate it to the other until they’ve figured themselves out.

a lot of people say that 2012 ruined the donnie and april friendship that was pretty strong throughout the franchise but honestly, even the 2003 show had pepperings of donnie’s slight crush on april, even back then. it’s not as obvious but it was definitely there. obviously it never got brought up, which imo is a little heartbreaking to think of poor don harbouring these secret feelings for his friend and then having to just. get over it when she marries casey but i think their friendship is still pretty special to them both that it eventually stops becoming an issue for him.

2012 donnie was a social wreck. he had no clue what he was doing and i think the writers could have done waaaay better in making that less of a fault and more of just. idk. just something that made people hate him a little less. it’s in the same vein as mikey’s adhd. i think the writing was a product of its time and that’s why mutant mayhem tackles those issues way way better than 2012 ever did.

it could also be said that donnie and april don’t even really have a lot in common, like some iterations. she’s smart but she’s not a scientist, and donnie’s crush is first of all born out of just physical looks, meaning that maybe donnie just happened to latch onto her because he felt a teeny glimpse of normality (“i could love a girl and she could love me back”) and kinda just held onto that. any of the other girls in the show, donnie doesn’t really draw himself towards but that’s because the other girls are mostly his brothers love interests and donnie is a firm believing in sticking to the bro code lmao (although maybe just from mikey’s perspective, but donnie does seem quite friendly with renet but that might have just been a 2003 callback perhaps, but they have more in common than her and mikey do)

all in all, the donnie/april thing could have been handled way better, especially with casey thrown into the mix. but is there one person solely responsible for the way their relationship played out? absolutely not. they both crossed some boundaries and both made some mistakes that backfired but like i said, they are far from perfect and looking back on their arc together, it’s a little heartbreaking to see how.. unsure they both are, of themselves and of each other. but that’s just my two cent on the whole thing.

i don’t think female characters were the 2012 writers strong point sadly and april suffered as a result but i genuinely think in her good moments, she shines. and donnie isn’t a creep, he’s just a good kid that wants to find his own happiness, even if he looks in the wrong places, both their intentions are good, i believe.

Inspired by something me and my older brother do:

So the Disaster Twins, because adhd/autism solidarity, sometimes have like. A Word. That whenever one of them says/hears it will have them busting their asses laughing for no earthly reason and it drives the rest of the fam insane. It can last days or weeks depending on the Word. One day it'll be "pancakes" then suddenly it's "wipes" and it keeps going. NO ONE understands why it's so funny to them. Raph is just glad they're happy.

Until the Word is a bad one or a really bad cuss that they keep repeating because it's so freaking funny for some ungodly reason. The longest Word phase had gone a full month where Leo would look at Donnie and say with his full chest:

"Hey Dee."

"Hm?"

"Slut."

Que Donnie dying on the floor.

And it lasted a month.

(i kinda have a short fic idea where one of the twins gets kidnapped by the villain who beats them up real bad before asking "Any last words?" The twin grins through bloody teeth and says

"Slut."

There's a loud bark of laughter behind the villain and he turns around to get absolutely brained by the other twin who'd been sneaking up on them.)

Four kings au personal head cannons

Why do I feel like they were all raised by the previous ruler.

Like Leo was raised by Peach. Raph was raised by bowser. Donnie with king boo and Mikey with king boom.

Plus i feel like Raph was bowser jr but the jr name was a cover up to hide his real name until he was older.

I think Raph has a chompy as a pet. Leo has a yoshi. Donnie has a owl or a ghost cat. Then Mikey was a mini bomb.

I feel like Raph just had thousands or capes and that are just ready to be wornin his closet or has the same one on. Until it is to ripped up to wear any more.

King Donnie gives me Stolas from Hellava Boss aesthetic.

I feel like Mikey’s mask tails little up on fire when he gets into Dr. Delicate Touch mode. And slowly burn down until he basically explodes.

Raph has a soft side for kids and pets from him originally and the fact bowser himself has a soft spot of children. So Raph would have little fundraisers for orphanages and pet shelters.

Leo was probably spoiled to much when he was little by peach. To the point that he kinda acts like prince Naveen from Princes and the Frog.

Mikey probably cleans and cooks for himself and doesn’t have servants in his castle. He also gives out autographs for little kids. Had probably host most of the party’s for all the kings to go to.

I also think Donnie is the only one that wears gloves because of his autism. And probably doesn’t have many announcements since he probably doesn’t like being in crowded areas.

I HAD A THOUGHT AND NOW I CAN’T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD HELP-

So so so so so-

I can’t stop comparing 2012Leo and 2018Raph as, like, the same person, and it got me thinking- The Donnies and Mikeys are pretty similar being the OCD&Autism/ADHD bros and the more I consider them the more I liked that because things fit into place better and then it hit me.

That leaves 2018Leo and 2012Raph as the final similar duo but there’s NO WAY these guys are similar, right?

HA! My poor ignorant past self was killed in mere minutes after considering such things.

FOR YOU SEE:

On the surface, Raphael can be seen as an arrogant bully (hits brothers/insults brothers/taunts the enemy) who isn’t a team player (lone wolf for life) and tends to let impulse get the better of him (he get ANGY)

On the surface: Leon can be seen as an arrogant bully (taunts brothers/throws things at brothers/makes sarcastic comments about everyone) who isn’t a team player (fights Raph’s leadership/thinks he knows best) and tends to let impulse get the better of him (Yk, he should definitely abandon his brothers in a battle against Shredder to go talk to Big Mama)

BUT

Underneath, Raphael is constantly fighting insecurities (No one understands him!), will always be there to protect his brothers (the world is constantly out to get them), is secretly terrified to be alone (He’s quit 23 times, yet he always comes back), and will always put his family above all else (“Sorry, Slash, my brothers come first.”)

Underneath, Leon is constantly fighting insecurities (Is the face of the team all he is? Isn’t he more?), will always be there to protect his brothers (he has their best interests at heart no matter what insanity he participates in), is secretly terrified to be alone (“I need my brainy guy and my smashy guy and my eats-peanut-butter-with-his-fingers guy!”) and will always put his family above all else (dives through into prison dimension with sadistic alien and locks the door behind him)

They aren’t mirror counterparts, but if you look closely, the similiarities are there. They boast about being strong, but are scared they’re a weak link. They’re both the second youngest (canon) so they know what it’s like to have the urge to be in charge but to feel overshadowed by the ‘better’ older brother. They both tend to do whatever it takes to protect their family, and despite their “I care for nothing but myself” facade, they often are seen putting their lives on the line for friends, family, and even strangers.

They see battle as a challenge and even slightly a ‘game’, but will absolutely switch from ‘loud mouth fighter’ to their own kind of ‘silent but deadly’ when the stakes become real.

ERGO- IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW

Okay I have to say that it bothers me immensely how this fandom treats the Donnie’s Gifts episode.

Specifically the shock collar.

I know, I know, it’s an incredibly old topic that’s like poking a sleeping bear to bring up again, but if you may feel the same I do, then hear me out.

On one side, we have people who see it as Donnie being deliberately cruel and actively wishing to control his brother through force if need be.

On the other side, we have people who see it as something good, and poor Donnie didn’t mean to hurt Leo! He didn’t mean for his gift to cause harm! He just wanted to create something to make Leo focus more, he just doesn’t understand that what he did was bad! But it’s okay because he doesn’t get it!

Both these readings suck, in my opinion, though one I see more often than the other.

Now, I love Donnie, I do, he’s so, so fun and interesting and a fantastic character…but the shock collar was an incredibly messed up thing to make. Obviously, he loves his brothers, and he just wanted the best for them, but it was still an objectively awful thing to do to your brother. (Don’t get me wrong, Mikey and Raph’s gifts were also not great, but let’s focus on the collar.)

See, making a collar like that, and having your brother wear it, knowing what it does…that’s not a good thing. It doesn’t matter that he didn’t get to explain it first. It doesn’t matter if it was meant to help Leo in the long run. That ‘help’ is forcing Leo to endure painful shocks until he’s conditioned to, what, pay attention? (And that’s a funny thought, considering it was the shocks that distracted him in the first place.)

Good intentions don’t automatically make things okay.

There’s also an admittedly ableist tone to the reading of Donnie simply being let off the hook because he “doesn’t understand why it’s bad.” That’s- that’s so infantilizing. Donnie is more than capable of knowing when he messes up! And he did mess up here! I hate when people use his autism as an excuse, it feels so ableist to me. Just let him own up to it and apologize! He’s not a bad guy, and it’s okay for characters to mess up! So long as they own up to it! Donnie’s a person too, and he has flaws, let him own them, please.

However, this is not to say that Donnie is evil or abusive for doing this, not at all. While he should not be absolved of guilt, he clearly isn’t intending for his gifts to come off the way they had, and he clearly made them out of concern for his brothers. It’s understandable that he would go about it the wrong way - it’s just not okay that he did. And what he did warrants an apology to the others, especially Leo, even if they themselves shook it off.

So, yeah. The shock collar is incredibly messed up. It was painful enough to affect Meat Sweats- and Leo had it around his neck. It’s a comedy, so I know we gotta take these things with a grain of salt, but whenever I see this episode tackled in a more serious way, it almost always either 1) makes Donnie out to be the Worst, as though we aren’t constantly shown him caring immensely for his brothers, or 2), admittedly more prevalently and annoyingly, it chooses to focus on how sad and misunderstood Donnie is, rather than the very real harm he caused. Like. LEO IS THE ONE WHO HAD A SHOCK COLLAR ON HIM. Put there by HIS OWN BROTHER. And no one cares about that??? Leo’s pain is dismissed??? Donnie’s feelings matter more??? What????

I think that’s what gets me most here, honestly. Not that Donnie is presented as evil, or innocent, but that Leo’s experience doesn’t matter in comparison to Donnie’s reactions to it. It leaves a horrible taste in my mouth to see time and time again.

Again. It doesn’t matter what the intentions were. It also doesn’t automatically make Donnie abusive or evil.

But it was a shock collar, made to hurt, made to correct, and if you look at it outside of the comedic lens it was established in…it’s not okay.

Donnie’s not a bad person, and he’s actually a pretty great brother, a hero in his own right…but he really messed up here.

And that’s okay to admit.
