This turtle is a subspecies of the Aldabra Giant Tortoise.

The oldest conformed Seychelles Giant Tortoise is Jonathan the Tortoise, who has reached an age of 191 years old.

The carapace reaches an avg length of 122 cm (48 in), and an average weight of 250 kg (550 lb).

Sehr beliebt bei Urlaubern ist die Insel Curieuse, die vor Praslin, einer weiteren Insel, liegt. Bekannt ist Curieuse vor allem durch die hier beheimateten Riesenschildkröten. Sie können auf der Insel an Stränden und in unberührter Natur beobachtet werden. Darüber hinaus wachsen auf Curieuse und ansonsten nur noch auf Praslin die berühmten, einheimischen Kokosnüsse Coco der Mer. Ideal für alle Naturliebhaber, die einen nachhaltigen Tourismus wünschen. Mit einem Yachtcharter Praslin und einem erfahrenen Skipper, lassen sich die beiden Inseln wunderbar erkunden.

Vallée de Mai

Ein absolutes Muss für alle Naturliebhaber ist der Naturpark Vallée de Mai auf der wunderschönen Insel Praslin. Als Teil des UNESCO-Weltnaturerbes besticht dieser Park mit seinen unberührten Palmenwäldern. Hier, neben der Insel Curieuse, ist der einzige Ort, an dem die sagenumwobenen Coco de Mer Kokosnüsse wachsen. Der Palmenwald präsentiert sich als atemberaubende Kulisse, die oft auch als "Garten Eden der Seychellen" bezeichnet wird. Ein Besuch in diesem faszinierenden Naturpark ist ein absolutes Muss für Naturliebhaber!

Ursprünglich als Kokos- und Vanilleplantage betrieben, wird heute nur noch für den Inselbedarf produziert. Hier kann man den Ochsen in der alten Kopramühle bei der Arbeit beobachten. Der Park beherbergt den ältesten Friedhof der Insel, eine große Gruppe neugieriger Riesenschildkröten und ein Museum im alten Plantation House, Grann Kaz. Souvenirs wie Kokosnussöl, Vanillestangen und Muskatnuss sind erhältlich. Ein Höhepunkt ist die Anse Source d’Argent, oft als schönster Strand der Welt ausgezeichnet. Parkeintritt 100 SCR, ab 7 Uhr geöffnet. Bei Ebbe kann man den Parkeintritt vermeiden, sollte aber den Rückweg entlang des Wasserweges nehmen.

Fazit

Die Seychellen haben für jeden Geschmack etwas zu bieten. Naturlieberhaber kommen auf den Inseln im Indischen Ozean auf jeden Fall auf ihre Kosten. Dass sich hier rund um die Inseln auch das Tauchen lohnt, braucht sicher nicht besonders hervorgehoben werden. So bleibt am Ende nur noch zu sagen: viel Freude beim Besuch der Seychellen!
