Toshihiko Bito: Ka 窠 カ (2008)
Ka is a nest of beast or bird in a hollow. A nest where creatures are wriggling. A chaotic place from which images are springing.

Hydrogen 1 (H) - Most of the universe, the building block of every other element.
vs
Antimony 51 (Sb) - Useful in fire-proofing, Antimony also helps to get the glass on your TV screen to be free of microscopic bubbles which might impact the picture quality.

Today, I just learned of the element Antimony, a metal from Earth's crust, and it struck me as the material that would form the School for Evil, possibly paired with some of the blueish aesthetics associated with Evelyn Sader.

Environmentally-friendly InSb/InP colloidal quantum dots for fast and sensitive short-wave infrared photodetectors
Applications such as LIDAR, 3D imaging for mobile devices, automotive and augmented/virtual reality or night vision for surveillance, rely on the development of short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodetectors. These devices are capable of seeing in the region of the spectrum that is invisible to our eye since they operate in the spectral window of 1-2 µm. The SWIR light sensor industry has been dominated for years by epitaxial technology, mainly based on devices made of indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs). However, several factors such as high production costs, low-scale manufacturability and incompatibility with CMOS have confined the epitaxial technology to niche and military markets. In contrast, the potential of SWIR photodetectors made of colloidal quantum dots (CQDs), nanoscale semiconductor materials, has attracted significant interest in recent years due to their appealing features, such as low cost and compatibility with CMOS architecture, among others.

I kind of want a book for the eight months between the first chapter of Tricks for Free and the second. Just an entire book of Antimony hanging out with Fern and Megan, dealing with her job, occasionally touching base with Mary or suppressing her magic, but basically just a slice of life novel there. I know, it would never happen, because there's probably like three other people who want to read that, but I really just want to read about these characters getting a break from the high drama shenanigans and just getting to be themselves for a while. I could totally go for a slice of life book about her in Portland, too, either before or after her arc in the books as they are. And one of Sally and James putting their lives back together after everything. That would be nice, too. Maybe someday I'll just write it myself, put it on AO3 for the other three people who would be into that.

okay so after my last post about the stone sky preview and how it differed from the final published version, i recalled that Jemisin once posted a snippet of an early draft of The Fifth Season, and it's so incredibly different from the finished product that we got and it's absolutely fascinating and honestly a great reassurance about just how extensive the drafting and revising process for stories can actually be???
draft: Alabaster was a third-slash-first-person POV character. canon: he's viewed through Syenite's eyes, as recounted by the narrator.
draft: Fulcrum orogenes could earn the Yumenes comm name at death/burial. canon: Fulcrum orogenes lose whatever comm name they once had, and there's no indication of whether they can ever "earn" one later. do they even receive a proper burial when they die???
draft: some Fulcrum teachers were outsider stiffs (stills) who did not live on campus and went home every day after classes. Orogenes were sometimes allowed to interact with teachers' children. canon: all Fulcrum teachers are orogenes. The only time anyone gets to leave is if a ringed orogene is sent on an assignment. Also, Guardians exist.
draft: "Threeleaders" was a use caste name??? Apparently it refers to the number of leaders in a person's ancestry. canon: it's "Leadership", inherited as such regardless of numbers or anything like that.
draft: there's a punishment that involves sitting in "the box" without being able to move or drink water or anything. canon: it's not implausible that such a punishment could still exist, but i don't recall it ever being specifically mentioned.
draft: "Antimony" (presumably, since she isn't named in this snippet) seems a lot more overtly caring towards Alabaster, despite lacking any in-depth understanding of humanity. Also, she can walk. canon: she may care to some extent, but it's not nearly as clearly on display. Stone eaters hardly ever move fluidly, much less walk. Also, at least some stone eaters do still consider themselves to be people.
