National Avocado Day
Looking for a healthy and versatile ingredient to add to your meals? This tasty fruit is loaded with nutrients and can be used in a variety of delicious dishes.
Avocados, especially when sliced and placed on toast, may have seemed like a fad in the early 2000s. But, happily, they are here to stay.
And to make sure they are paid the attention they deserve, they have their own day – National Avocado Day!
History of National Avocado Day
Originating in south-central Mexico, avocados have been around for thousands of years, but likely were not cultivated until around 500 BC. Even then, the first mention of this fruit in the English language wasn’t until 1696.
By 1871, the avocado had been introduced to the United States, where they grew particularly well in California. But it took some time – more than 100 years – for them to come into popularity in the US. This was probably because the fruit seemed exotic and most people really didn’t know what to do with it or how to get their families to agree to eating it.
The avocado industry had taken a big hit after the 1980s “low-fat diet” trend in the US, so in the 1990s, the industry worked hard to educate and do some creative marketing for the American population. The idea was to associate the avocado with Latin dishes which brought the fruit more attention, and the idea worked.
Once considered to be a strangely colored, weirdly shaped, bumpy fruit that people didn’t know how to cut, the avocado was presented in a new way and normalized. Sales increased, crop values spiked and the California avocado industry grew by leaps and bounds.
National Avocado Day is celebrated on the last day of July, at the peak of the avocado season in California. But, luckily, avocados can usually be found in supermarkets all year round for people who want to eat them in all of the seasons.
National Avocado Day was founded in 2017 and has been observed annually and gaining in popularity ever since.
National Avocado Day Timeline
500 BC Avocados are first cultivated
Having grown wild for thousands of years, avocados were likely first cultivated in Mexico.
750 BC Mummies are buried with avocados
As mummies are often buried with possessions they might need in the afterlife, some Incan mummies dating back to this time in Peru have avocado seeds buried with them.
16th Century Avocados are introduced to Spain
Having been native to Mexico, the fruit spreads through Central and South America before it is taken back to Spain, its first introduction into Europe.
1833 Avocados make it to America
First making it to Florida, and then to California around 20 years later, California is now the leading producer of domestic avocados in the US.
1935 Rudolph Hass Patents the Hass Avocado
Originally discovered in the late 1920s, Rudolph Hass works hard to propagate this small, dark-purple-skinned variety and it ends up being a big hit.
How to Celebrate National Avocado Day
National Avocado Day is the time to make a salute to this deliciously creamy and adaptable fruit. Check out some of these ideas for celebrating and enjoying the day:
Eat a Delicious Avocado
Since the popularity of avocados has increased as a food that goes far beyond guacamole, eating avocados has become second nature for many! A healthy snack on its own, or part of a nutritious meal, avocados can be eaten on toast, in salads, with eggs, in sushi rolls, in smoothies and much more.
Avocados are perfect for sharing so grab a friend, and a knife and begin slicing through that avocado in celebration of National Avocado Day!
Bake Using Avocados
Many people think that avocados are only for savory eating, but that’s simply not true. They can be used in many different recipes for baking sweet treats. It provides a healthy, vegan fat option that can often be used to replace butter, shortening and sometimes even eggs. Avocado can provide moistness with added health benefits
Try out some of these ideas for baked avocado treats:
Avocado Brownies. Avocado and chocolate make a great pair! Try making healthy brownies with almond flour, maple syrup, avocado, eggs, coconut sugar, cocoa powder and a few other ingredients.
Avocado Banana Bread. This delightful recipe is like classic banana bread – but better! It’s moist, tasty and doesn’t use any butter.
Avocado Mint Fudge Bars. A healthier version of “grasshopper” cookies, this recipe has healthy ingredients like coconut oil, maple syrup, cacao nibs and peppermint extract. And they don’t need to be baked, just frozen.
Avocado Ice Cream. This one might seem hard to believe, but avocados make a healthy and tasty alternative to ice cream. Combine the ripe mashed fruit with lime juice, milk, cream and sugar and blend them in an ice cream freezer or make them into avocado pops.
Try Growing an Avocado Tree
It’s not as difficult as it might seem! In fact, special contraptions can now be found in stores that are meant for just this purpose. Simply harvest the seed of an avocado, peel off the layer of dead skin, then poke it with toothpicks in a circle. Using the toothpicks, place the seed over a glass or jar that is filled with water, with the bottom in the water but the rest in the open air.
Place it in a warm place, let the roots grow, and change the water every few days. In a few weeks, a seedling will grow and eventually it can be planted into soil. It may take a few years (perhaps 5 or more) until the tree is ready to produce fruit, but it’s a great project and totally worth the wait!
Make Avocado Mixed Drinks
Who knew that cocktails could be so delicious and also have nutritional value? In honor of National Avocado Day, check out some of these ideas for making tasty cocktails using this delightful fruit:
Avocado Margaritas. Keeping with the theme of Mexican food, use all of the same ingredients as a classic margarita, but add ½ avocado. It’s a deliciously creamy treat that is best enjoyed with tortilla chips and guacamole.
Avocado Mojito. Adding avocado slices to mojito ingredients turns it into something a little bit more like a milkshake. Rich and creamy, with hints of lime and mint, it’s a refreshing summer drink.
Avocado Daiquiri. Usually made with strawberries, substituting with an avocado creates a uniquely smooth drink with a kick of rum.
Avocado Martini. This could really upset James Bond with his classic vodka martini, but who cares? Vodka, dry vermouth, dulce de leche, milk and sweetened condensed milk take this recipe so far beyond 007.
Create an Avocado Face Mask
Some skin experts have found that avocados contain ingredients that are super healthy for the skin! Instead of buying a mask at the store that is pre-made, pre-packaged and filled with preservatives, make your own at home. Blend together avocado, plain yogurt, honey, and lemon juice. Wait 20 minutes and then apply to your face to keep your skin young and healthy looking.
National Avocado Day FAQs
Are avocados good for you?
Yes! Avocados are a healthy food that contains vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.

Do avocados go in the fridge?

Putting salmon tartare on avocado and lime puree has been my jam this summer, and this rendition has been my favorite so far, with heirloom tomatoes, finely minced onion, lime zest, and scallions mixed in the tartare. More to come on this, but I’m pretty pleased with this rendition so far.

I've been playing with salmon tartare this spring and summer, and I think this might be one of my favorites to date: salmon tartare with tomato, jalapeno, and scallion with a lime-avocado puree and a dusting of Tajín. The puree is kind of a play on using an egg yolk in steak tartare, and so you can mix it all together and create the perfect bite.
Recipe to come soon!

Boudica Café Bar Offers Local and British Comfort Food All Day Long
There’s a new restaurant in Ortigas that serves as a lovely café by day and turns into an energetic restobar by night. Aside from its local and British comfort food plus delightful beverages, I also heard that it offers my favorite authentic Fish and Chips from CargoFish! Those magic words were enough for me to head over to Ortigas to pay this new charming venue a visit.
Boudica Café Bar is located inside the City Golf Plaza along Julia Vargas Avenue in Ortigas, Pasig. This new restaurant is from the same owners of CargoFish which I believe sells the most authentic Fish and Chips in Metro Manila. That’s why when The Hungry Kat was invited last week for lunch at Boudica, I was more than excited to bring out my British accent once again and enjoy all the wonderful dishes they had prepared for us.
Boudica Café Bar is not just your typical restobar because you can enjoy coming here in the daytime and all the way until late evening. The spacious dining hall in divided into distinct areas, each with its own charming personality. This area near the entrance comes with plush sofas where you can relax with a drink and some afternoon snacks.
On the other hand, the fireplace setup further inside the main dining hall has a more energetic vibe to it. This is better suited for big lunch or dinner groups who plan on ordering a lot of food.
Just beside it is the main bar which you can choose for those happy hour drinks and get togethers with friends. It also gives you a closer look at the baristas and how they prepare all the lovely beverages.
Then there’s the semi al fresco area right outside overlooking the busy Julia Vargas Avenue. The murals and colorful designs all around the restaurant really make it so Instagrammable.
I started lunch by ordering their Boudica Smoothie (P385). This healthy and refreshing beverage has no sugar added and comes with greek yogurt, strawberry blend, banana, avocado, mango, cucumber, and melon.
Try some of their Coffee Creations such as the Almond Butterscoth Latte (P100), Vanilla Hazelnut Latte, Ice Blended Cappuccino, Butterscoth Cheesecake Latte, or the Affogato Al Cafe. They also have plenty of other juices, milkshakes, and sodas on the menu.
Aside from their Classic Cocktails, they also offer Signature Craft Cocktails like Kiss Me (P365), a drink that definitely lives up to its unique name. This has a combination of Johnny Walker Black whiskey, cointreau, angostura bitters, raspberry, passion fruit and schnapps.
If you are dining with a large group, go order The Boudica (P1950). This humongous appetizer platter offers a wide variety of meats and cheese, It comes with four kinds of cheese, four selections of charcuterie, chicken liver pate, pickled grapes, olives, mixed nuts, gherkins, breads, with garlic butter, onion jam, and spiced honey.
Salad lovers also have plenty of options like the Blue Cheese and Walnut Salad (P460) which comes with bacon, chicken, mixed greens, blue cheese, parmesan blue cheese dressing, croutons, and caramelized walnuts. There’s also the House Salad (P315) with mixed greens, cucumber, carrots, cherry tomatoes, parmigiano-reggiano, balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
My favorite here is definitely the Classic Fish and Chips by CargoFish. This very crispy fish is served with your choice of proper British-style chips or sweet potato chips, plus tartar sauce, mushy peas, and chip shop curry. I remember always eating Fish and Chips during my summer school stay in London, and this is exactly how they serve it there. It’s also rare to find authentic mushy peas here in Manila so I’m happy that they offer it at Boudica.
The Fish and Chips comes with your choice of beer-battered fish, whether you want it to be prepared with Dory (P325), Cod (P665), or Salmon (P720). I always prefer the cod fish because I think it’s the best fish for deep frying, but I also got to try the salmon this time which has its own unique flavor. There’s also an option to have Chicken and Chips (P335) so maybe I will try that out next time.
For pasta lovers, there’s the Italian Carbonara (P445) with spaghetti, smoked bacon, egg yolk, parmigiano-reggiano, breads. On the other hand, the Tartufo (P485) comes with tagliatelle, truffle cream, button mushroom, prosciutto breads.
There’s also authentic Neapolitan pizzas like the Truffle El Funghi (P720) with porcini, fresh button mushroom, truffle cream, and parmigiano-reggiano. Other pizza flavors to choose from include Margherita, Smoked Bacon, Italian Sausage, Prosciutto and Burratina, and more.
It’s not just international dishes on display at Boudica Café because they also feature local comfort food favorites. One of them is the Pork and Chicken Isaw (P335) from Burnt Bamboo, their sister restaurant offering grilled barbecue specialties. This order comes with six big sticks of chicken isaw and pork isaw in their signature glaze and served spectacularly over smoking ashes. It also comes with in-house vinegar for a real street side experience. There’s also an option to get Chicken Isaw (P305) only or Pork Isaw (P365) only.
The Paella Negra (P580) is another classic dish on the menu. This has a combination of arborio rice, shrimps, mussels, squid rings, and roasted garlic. Best to share this with the entire table.
I really love the brunch options at Boudica Café Bar. These are the best to have on a lazy weekend or after waking up from a very late and busy evening. The Smoked Bacon Slab (P485) is a pretty plate that comes with two slabs of smoked bacon, garlic rice, atchara, and two eggs cooked your way.
Better yet, get the Full English (P585) which is a typical British breakfast with everything on it. This supersized breakfast platter has English banger, bacon, proper chips, grilled tomato, fresh button mushroom, baked beans, fried bread, and two eggs cooked your way. You can also have it with Black Pudding (+P100), a type of blood sausage popular in the United Kingdom.
We would like to thank Boudica owners Chef Matthew Hornsby-Bates and Chef Matthew Lim for hosting our group and showing us all their specialties. Boudica Café Bar is a great hangout spot in the city, whether you’re looking for a cozy lunch break or planning a boozy night out with friends. I’ll definitely be back here really soon for more of their spectacular fish and chips.

Popular Fish Dishes: Exploring Delicious and Healthy Options topic in details
Tumblr media
Fish is a highly nutritious food that provides a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. It's also a rich source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to a range of health benefits, including reduced inflammation and a lower risk of heart disease.
Fish can be enjoyed in many different ways, from simple grilled fish to complex seafood stews. In this guide, we'll explore some of the most popular fish dishes from around the world, including their ingredients, preparation methods, and health benefits.
Fish and Chips
Fish and chips is a classic British dish that has become popular around the world. The dish typically consists of battered and fried white fish (such as cod or haddock) served with thick-cut fries and a side of tartar sauce. While this dish is delicious, it's important to note that it's also high in calories and unhealthy fats due to the frying process.
To make a healthier version of fish and chips, you can try baking the fish instead of frying it, and using sweet potato or baked potato wedges instead of fries. You can also opt for a homemade tartar sauce using low-fat mayonnaise, lemon juice, and herbs.
Sushi:  Sushi is a popular Japanese dish that has become increasingly popular around the world. It typically consists of raw fish (such as tuna, salmon, or eel) served on top of seasoned rice. Sushi can be enjoyed in a variety of different ways, including maki rolls (where the fish and rice are wrapped in seaweed), nigiri (where the fish is placed on top of a small ball of rice), or sashimi (where the fish is served without rice).
Sushi is a low-calorie and low-fat dish that's rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. However, it's important to note that raw fish can also carry a risk of foodborne illness, so it's important to consume sushi from reputable sources and handle it safely.
Grilled Fish: Grilling fish is a popular method of cooking in many cultures. It's a simple way to prepare fish that allows the natural flavors to shine through. In the Mediterranean, grilled sardines are a popular dish, while in Mexico, grilled tilapia is a favorite. Grilled fish can be served with a variety of different sauces and toppings, such as lemon butter, garlic, and herbs. Fresh Fish Home Delivery in Delhi
Grilled fish is a low-calorie and low-fat dish that's rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. It's also a great way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet, as grilled fish pairs well with grilled vegetables such as zucchini, peppers, and onions. Fish Tacos:  Fish tacos are a delicious and healthy way to enjoy seafood. The dish typically consists of battered and fried white fish (such as cod or tilapia) served in a soft tortilla with toppings such as salsa, avocado, and cabbage. Fish tacos are a popular dish in many coastal regions, including California and Mexico. To make a healthier version of fish tacos, you can try grilling the fish instead of frying it, and using whole-grain tortillas.
