It is surprisingly difficult to figure out the first time a Barbie doll was explicitly released as a collectible rather than a doll for children to play with.

The first Barbie collection tier was introduced in 2000, but this is clearly not the beginning of Barbie as a collectible - just the first time it was codified.

So when exactly did Barbie become a collectible?

The first Dolls of the World doll (Italian Barbie) was released in 1980, but at this point the Dolls of the World collection were essentially themed playline dolls - they didn't really start to get differentiated as distinctly collectibles until later in the run.

The Official Barbie Collectors Club released a number of collectibles specific to members -- but I can't find a conclusive date on when the first one was released.

Barbie Bazaar was a magazine that advertised specifiically to Barbie collectors, and debuted in August 1988. This gives some of the earliest references that can be placed on a timeline to collections as it refers to the Internation Barbie Collection (later to be folded into Dolls of the World) as being an existing collectors series, as well as other ongoing Barbie collectible series such as the Porcelain Collection.
