Tall Standing Stones
...passing over he saw that the rock-wall was a circle of hills, and that within it was a plain, and in the midst of the plain stood a pinnacle of stone, like a vast tower but not made by hands. On its top stood the figure of a man.
- (Frodo's dream) In the House of Tom Bombadil
...so they turned from the sight and went down into the hollow circle. In the midst of it there stood a single stone, standing tall under the sun above, and at this hour casting no shadow. It was shapeless and yet significant: like a landmark, or a guarding finger, or more like a warning.
- Fog on the Barrow Downs
Spoilers Ahoy (nonspoiler link)
So tall stones standing in the center of flat circular spaces seems to be a theme...
I think it's interesting that both of these instances of similar geography represent entrapment.
Resting under the stone is the turning point that dooms the hobbits. When they awaken they find themselves"in an island in the fog." Said fog rises around them like a trap and, well, things go downhill from there.
Gandalf is of course imprisoned on the pinnacle of Orthanc in Frodo's dream. He says of this later: "I stood alone on an island in the clouds."
Gandalf is rescued by Gwaihir (with help from Radagast) and The Hobbits are rescued by Bombadil, with help from Frodo.
*jazz hands* parallels

Always enjoyed the weird eeriness of the barrows on bree. And they're weirdly refreshing to come back to, after the Minas morgul grossness on my mains.

Beautiful ambiance! The decrepit tombs of kings older than nations. I adored that chapter in the books. It seemed like the spirit world would keep them chained to a cold stone forever, and they would await the coming of Sauron in pitiless repose.

In general I think the people who bitch loudest about Bombadil being cut from every single abridged adaptation of LOTR haven't given any real thought to how they themselves would go about pruning down that unwieldy beast of a novel while preserving that particular side quest.
HOWEVER,
I am now madly obsessed with the idea of Matt Berry playing Tom Bombadil. This casting has put me in a 180° from thinking no production could do the character justice to knowing in my bones that the perfect actor is out there and would probably jump at the part.

Does Coppernob know that a Furness Engine that is labeled as preserved is actually buried in a mine? That must be as or more horrifying that being in a glass box.
Look, even in greenhouse days Coppernob has one of the most comfortable possible situations for a superannuated engine. He wouldn't ever claim otherwise.
They all know about poor 115. It was an awful affair. Definitely killed off any remaining vestiges of idealism the Copper-Nobs had about their directors (or THE Director), that's for sure.
That said, the other Furness engines have chosen to believe the company line that 115 is really truly out cold, never again to be conscious. Mainly because there's nothing they can do and the alternative is too horrid to contemplate.
I think it's probable, myself. Just like I believe Duke really did manage to sleep through much of his shed time. Engine sentience eventually goes offline, as it were, when they're unwanted for long enough. A hundred and thirty years will definitely do it.
(The way that F.R. 115 is listed as 'preserved' is so darkly comic, especially in a universe where engines are sapient, that I am sure that Coppernob actually has something to do with this persistent terminology. Like it's a Statement about the implications of all preservation.)
