The latest in a line of therapeutic robotic assistants, here is the latest in her lineage, in the circuits and metal herself: MY-3, the Former Ultimate Robot!

BACKSTORY AND TALENT

MY-3 (nicknamed “Mythie”, and eventually “Myth) was the third and most recent creation created by a pair of robotic engineering geniuses. MY-3 was created to become a therapeutic robot, with her adorable appearance, personality, and voice, that makes her a massive success with both children, and even many adults, who find MY-3’s various adorable qualities to be calming and soothing. Many functions, such as a built-in oven, and a built-in musical speaker and TV, can offer different coping mechanisms, for all sorts of patients. All of those qualities resulted in a massive recovery success rate at the mental treatment facility that she currently works at, when not attending Hope’s Peak and learning more about humans and their behaviors. There otherwise isn’t that much backstory on MY-3, for she was only created about 3 or 4 years ago. Myth is currently working in Ward #137, helping Anons recover mentally from anxiety attacks and/or assorted mental trauma, and this story would center on Myth helping these Anons through their mental pain and trauma.

RELATIONSHIPS

Wyre Anon, Former Ultimate Entomologist

Wyre’s parents and Myth’s parents have been scientific business partners for a long time, and regularly collaborate on many projects together, namely studying bugs, in order to figure out how their robotic bugs are supposed to move. Despite Wyre’s rough demeanor and equally as dirty and gritty talent, Myth can’t deny that Wyre was only the bestest friend that she could ever ask for. As long as Wyre’s insects didn’t make their way into her circuits, Myth always found the various insects Wyre brings over to her fascinating. But for now, many of the now-fragile patients would rather not witness their much-cherished insect companions, much to the entomologist’s anger and dismay.

Outfit: A tan safari outfit with a red tie and an off-white pith helmet, off-white socks and brown shoes, regularly carries a butterfly net, the glasses from their original design.

Anon Scar, Ultimate Aikido Master

Growing up with severe emotional and self-esteem issues, Scar’s parents sent her off to a temple and had an old master teach her all about using aikido (or the Art of the Demons, as the old master called it) to maintain emotional control. Scar’s skill in aikido gave her both something to be proud of and something to control her overflowing emotions. Unfortunately, her old master eventually passed away, and she more-or-less regressed into her old pre-aikido behavior. MY-3‘s tranquil presence and reassuring words regularly calmed the aikido master down, during her emotional highs, and allowed her true maternal side to show, especially when it came to teaching younger Anons about aikido.

Outfit: Hair in a ponytail held by a purple bow, a black coat slung over her shoulders like a cape over a white robe with purple hakama pants, bandaged arms, white ankle socks.

Fusion Anon, Ultimate Pianist

Revered by many classical music enthusiasts for being a piano-playing prodigy ever since he was a little boy, no one can deny that Fusion is both passionate in playing the piano and composing his own piano music. Unfortunately, the stress that came from being a musical wunderkind and his strict and overbearing parents repeatedly entering him in contests and forcing him to practice endlessly, in order to win prize money, caused Fusion to suffer a mental breakdown on stage, and, in humiliation and shame, ran away to never play on stage again. Fusion loves to teach those willing to learn about music, but Myth couldn’t help but detect pain hidden by that cheery and food-stuffed grin.

Outfit: A blue jacket with golden music note shaped buttons and black and white stripes on the sleeves, over a red hoodie, black and white fingerless gloves, yellow and blue headphones around his neck, glasses, pants, and shoes from his original design.

Fusion II, Ultimate Detective

Born to a police commissioner father and a criminal prosecutor mother, Fusion II always wanted to pursue a career in justice, and managed to get her wish, when she became a prodigy detective in her preteen years. Unfortunately, in her first major murder case (which she managed to solve in under a day), when she managed to expose the culprit, the insane and enraged culprit pulled out a knife and gouged one of Fusion II’s eyes out, which gave her severe trauma, and encouraged her to never pursue another murder case again. While Fusion II‘s knowledge on memes helps educate MY-3 on human internet culture, it’s clear to MY-3 that her sarcasm and meme references are hiding some severe past pain.

Outfit: A black and blue fedora, a black eyepatch that hides her gouged-out eye, a blue trench coat over a white button up shirt and a red necktie, black gloves, a black and blue skirt, long white socks and black heeled boots.

Just Anon, Ultimate Tennis Pro

Similar to Fusion, Janon is a prodigy that is well-renowned by both his adoring fans from his highly-prestigious private boarding school and tennis enthusiasts everywhere. Being raised to uphold his family’s legacy, ever since he was a toddler, Janon wants nothing more than to leave his family and actually get a chance to relax between etiquette lessons and constant tennis matches that come with autograph sessions. Janon’s cramped schedules eventually lead to burn-out and mental roadblock, earning him a spot in the ward. MY-3‘s overly affectionate attitude definitely rubbed the athlete the wrong way, and would much rather either take a long nap or dote on the Jr. Ultimates.

Sparkle Anon, Former Ultimate Supreme Leader

With a love for the histrionics and a 30-person group at her fingertips, Sparkle doesn’t seem to like divulging into the specifics of her talent, for all she was willing to reveal about her organisation was that it, “SEEKS TO MAKE SHINING DIAMONDS OUT OF INSIGNIFICANT LUMPS OF COAL“. Ever since this theatrical self-proclaimed dictator arrived at the ward, she’s been trying to get people to join her group. Not even MY-3 seems to know what Sparkle is even doing at this ward, for she wasn’t scheduled for this (or any, for that matter) wards at the psychological ward. But that doesn’t mean MY-3 wouldn’t try to crack the rhinestone-covered enigma that is Supreme Leader Sparkle.

Outfit: A pink sparkly captain’s cap, hair in a sideplait, a blue suit and matching pants, a rainbow colored necktie, the cape and boots from her original design, always carries her sceptre.

Egg Anon, Former Ultimate Cosplayer/Assassin, and Wet Sock Anon, Former Ultimate Magician

The genius combination of the twin’s talents, with Wet Sock‘s brilliant magic shows and Egg’s ability to disguise themselves and blend in with the crowd, allows Egg’s true talent to shine and Egg to shank their targets from the shadows. They also regularly pull the classic “twin switch” in both their operations and their prison escapes, and nobody could even tell the difference. It’s very clear that their parentless and tragic lives on the streets took a toll on their psyche, and once the cops found the twins, they hauled them over to the ward and left them in the care of the therapists and MY-3. Egg and Wet Sock always love to mess with MY-3 and her functions, but they’re secretly thankful for her help.

Both Outfits: Standard stage magician tuxedo, cape, and hat.

Curious Anon, Jr. Ultimate Inventor

Born and raised in a war-torn territory and underneath a cruel and exploitative government, upon finding out their gift in mechanics and coming up with plans, Curious was raised to be both an inventor and a test subject for said inventions, and Curious, being the passive soul that they are, never stood up against the cruel government that they lived under, even after the constant experiments gave them both physical and mental scars. Eventually, after the war ceased, somebody found Curious, and hauled them off to the psych ward. Curious’s kind and passive nature made them really great friend with the equally kind robot, but MY-3 knew that no one can handle what was thrown at the inventor, without consequences.

Outfit: Sickly green skin with stitches and scars all over their body and bolts in their neck, an off-white jumpsuit with black and yellow gloves, and matching boots and goggles, long messy hair.

Anon Nerd, Former Ultimate Butler

In order to step above all of the other more desirable kids residing in the orphanage alongside him, young Nerd quickly practiced crafts of cleanliness and order (namely cooking and cleaning living spaces). Eventually, those skills managed to get him picked up by a family that only uses him as a personal butler (and occasional bodyguard, why else would a butler carry around a volatile scouter, and a temper twice as large?), and never as their actual child. Eventually, after shouldering their abuse into his adult years, Nerd snapped and set fire to the mansion with his scouter, earning him a spot in the ward’s roster. MY-3 considers Nerd to be one of the tougher cookies to crack, due to his temper.

Outfit: Literally the exact same outfit but with gloves and longer coattails.

Eldritch Anon, Ultimate Artist

Desperately yearning for the “sheep” of the world to ”wake up”, Eldritch channels his pessimistic and paranoid mindset into traditional art (never digital, he doesn’t want to contribute to the robot uprising), and wants everyone who views his artwork (detailing apocalyptic settings and themes of distrust, misanthropy, and all the secretly-disgusting citizens of the world) to frown and spread scowls and distrust amongst the general population. Concerned about his paranoia, Eldritch’s parents sent him off to the ward, to many protests from the tiny artist. Eldritch hates MY-3‘s metallic guts, and always tries to destroy her, before she becomes the leader of the machine uprising.

Outfit: A paint splattered version of his hoodie over a black shirt with a creepy white face design on the front, brown overalls, and yellow and black rainboots.

Dream Anon, Ultimate Anthropologist

Expressing a love of humanity and the varied cultures of them, Dream travels all over the world with grit and determination to learn more about this particular interest of hers. Despite coming off to others as a ditzy jock, Dream is actually a respected figure in the field of anthropology and her anthropology journals are well-known by all in the field. Unfortunately, the reckless anthropologist stumbled into uncharted territory, one day, and got attacked by the territorial natives. It took her several days before her fellow explorers found her again, but the damage has already been done, both physically and mentally. Dream likes to claim she’s fine, but MY-3’s lie detector can see right through Dream.

Outfit: Hair that looks awkwardly lobbed off and scars all across her face and body, a pink cardigan over a tan button-up shirt, a dark brown skirt, black leggings, dark brown Uggs, the sidebag from her original design.

Iris Anon, Jr. Ultimate Adventurer

Not wanted to stay confided in a stuffy orphanage forever, Iris packed a simple backpack, and set off on a world tour, to see all of the fascinating and exotic things that the world has to offer. Despite being a preteen (and a really clumsy one, at that), the sheer reach that Iris had in her travels and her contagious optimism, she has garnered fame all over the world, and gave her the title of Ultimate Adventurer. Iris loves going to hospitals and psych wards and tell stories about her travels, and Ward #137 is definitely no exception. MY-3 loves learning about humans from around the world, but considering Iris’s past, MY-3 can’t help but feel like part of Iris’s optimism is all a facade.

Outfit: Hair cut to her shoulders, a brown leather parka with off-white fluff over a blue tanktop, bright pink pants and glow-in-the-dark sneakers, bandages all over her body, the glasses from her original design.

Purple Anon, Ultimate Astronaut

Raised by two influential pioneers of the scientific industry, Purple showed a promising career as an astronaut, for both her massive knowledge in astronomy and cosmology for someone of her age, and her oddly sturdy body that can take on the hideous vacuum of space, makes her the prime candidate for becoming astronaut. Unfortunately, despite aceing the astronaut exams, various technical difficulties with the spacecraft that she boarded ended up causing both the spacecraft and Purple’s hopes and dreams to crash and burn. Purple’s heavily scientific terms don’t detour the kindly robot from befriending the timid and solemn astronaut, or helping said astronaut to cope with depression and survivor’s guilt.

Outfit: Some hair held up in a small sidetail with a star hairclip, a black overcoat with white star-shaped buttons over a purple sweater, a black skirt with small white dots on them, grey stockings and black Mary Janes.

Getting things out of the way, this non-Kibo-Con AU is far more angsty and hurt-comfort, compared to the standard talentswap AU, for just about everybody has trauma of varying degrees. ——————————————————-

PERSONALITY

Despite her relatively seasoned (read: 4 years old) AI, MY-3 still shows a childlike fascination for humans and how different they are from her, and the eyes on her screen simply sparkle, when she learns more and more about the inner machinations of the very people that created her. Because she is supposed to be a therapeutic robot, MY-3 is determined to use whatever functions she can, to get her patients to open up to her, and finding the root of their problems. So far, MY-3’s therapy was shown to have positive results for just about every client that she interacted with, which proves that she has empathy and understanding of humans way beyond any other robot of her time period, including MY-1 and MY-2.

APPEARANCE

MY-3 has a screen for a face that has different emoticons for different emotions, and a pink and white chassis. MY-3 has brown synthetic hairs dyed purple at the ends and an ahoge that functions much like a satellite dish. Instead of hands and arms, MY-3 has extendable arms with pink oven mitts on the end of them. As for clothes, MY-3 wears simple blue overalls and a bi pride bandana around her neck, with purple and blue rain boots on her feet.

I had this saved in my drafts for months 😅

CJ, aka Gloria Glory aka Columbia Junior, was the little sister of All American Hero Major Glory. You see, from the time they were little ldear older brother took his role very proudly but as they grew up, CJ wanted to follow in his footsteps as a superhero. Big Brother denied her the chance. In his eyes she was still young, still innocent. He couldn't lose his only sibling to the big bad ugly bad guys out there, or have her soul corrupted by the more...seductive ones like HIM. So every time she brought up the subject he'd shoot her down with the excuse that she didn't have what it takes. That girls need to stay and learn to become perfect housewives, play with dollies, shop, fashion, whatever normal teen girls liked to do.

That pissed her off. Storming off to her room and slammed the door.

The Major didn't mean to come off as sexist he truly had CJ's best interests at heart. But the world was dangerous, he was just being honest.

The younger Glory sulked in her room. That jackass! After everything she did to help him further his career he had the nerve to deny her a chance to pursue one of her own?! In her anger the cogs of her mind turned as a lightbulb appeared over head. Hmph! Who needs him? She had the money and talent she could create her own Hero Persona on her own! But where to start, she wondered.

Everything came into motion by the time the third AWSM assembly took place.

"There it is," she whispered. "My future."

CJ scratched her long wig as the bus bumped over the rocky road towards the mountain range. Flying would've been easier but she didn't want to risk being caught by the supers least of all her brother. She hoped no one was able to recognize her in her Valkyrie get up. She wasn't the only one: the whole bus were filled with Rock-God cosplayers hoping to catch Val Hallen's attention. She met him a few times, even thought of asking him out but her brother put a veto on that.

The bus stopped at the visitor center and everyone got off. The hidden redhead whistled at the sight of the grand mountain.

She saw where people were alresdy climbing up the stairs. She groused noting the number of steps. "Ugh this will take all day! The meetings probably gonna be over before I make it halfway!"

She could fly just a little but that still would draw attention. Sighing, she began her trek up the flight.

"Yes!"

In the district of Odaiba, Japan, a young woman and a much older man was sparring inside their dojo. The woman hollered as she tried to strike him only for him to side step. She struck again, bamboo sticks clacking loudly as he countered the blow. A few seconds and she finally managed to swipe him off his feet!

She began to do a little wiggle happy to have finally beat her master at something!

Before she knew it she was on the floor in a daze. What...just happened???

"You must always keep an eye out for your opponent Sakurako" the old man chided. She huffed but allowed him to pull her up.

After washing and getting dressed she went into the living room, put on the TV and went to the fridge to grab a drink. The reporter was talking about some big meeting, the camera zoomed up high showing a big white monument where multiple supers flown into.

Sakura shrugged. Who need all that glitz and glamor to fight crime? Besides she was pretty sure having a giant palace smack dab on top of a mountain wasn't the best idea. Her father came into the room stopping briefly to glance at the TV. "Maybe you will be up there on day," he mused.

"All those heroes and not a single woman up there," she scoffed. "They'd probably kick me out."

Back in the states, sunday school was in session at Townsville Baptist Church. Children stood on the benches singing their hearts out as a Black woman in purple and gold robes led them.

"Sing for me! Higher! Higher!" The instructor, a petite rotund woman named Goss instructed them. The altos rose their voices to an glass-shattering rate, holding the note before silencing, gasping for breath. Goss clapped her hands in satisfaction. "Wonderful babies! Massive improvement from last time," she complimented them. She looked at her watch. "Y'all have a few minutes to relax in the dining room before your parents pick you up! You've earned it!"

All the kids cheered (elated to not bear a single other moment of singing) and scurried out the room. Sighing Goss began picking up their papers off the floor. Competitive choir was no laughing matter. Being the proud teacher that she is she wanted every student to be in tip top shape for when they head to the Big Leagues. As she gazed around her sanctuary making note of every scratch and chip, she sighed. They need the money to save this church she can't let it go after it been in her family for generations. Sighing again she went into the dining room for a bite. There her students were huddled around the tv.

"Maybe we'll get to see Major Glory!"

"Glory is boring Krunk's where it's at!"

Their chatter died down as the announcer began introducing the Heroes. Goss watched with interest - that Nordic rock god was pretty cute - as she began thinking. Maybe she could do something that? Working with superheroes, she knew a lot of them had wealth hidden on the side. Not to sound like a gold digger, but she was willing to work another job if competitive singing didn't work out.

But how would she convince one of them to consider?

AN: OOOOK so first up we have our three main OCs: CJ, Sakura, and Gospelle. As much as I liked Members Only I disliked how OOC they made M.G. and Val for the sole purpose of making the PPG look better (something of a pet peeve of mine in crossovers). So I want to rewrite the episode so they'd act more in character, replace that ridiculous "Girls Are Better Than Boys" with something more in line with feminism/equality, and also Krunk will be there bc where the shell was he in that episode??

Since I’m basically a photographer who runs an IG theme page (CosplayAmerica), I grew curious about other IG theme pages and I thought it be interesting to interview them so introducing the first interview, Cosplay of Color !

What’s the origin story of CosplayofColor IG page?

Simple enough it started out as a branch page to Cosplay.and.Comics years ago who is probably one of the only share pages I noticed that shared Black cosplayers. However it quickly grew and had about 20k compared to the other branch pages that were.

Since it grew into its own beast, I felt it was important that the page do more since posting was so inconsistent and diversity is needed in this community. So in October last year ,my group of friends & I took over the page as it's new main admins and changed how we were gonna use it.

We decided to open it up to more ethnicities. We've featured Black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Indigenous, Asian, and Pacific Islanders. We also stuck to a formula that's helped us be consistently showcasing new faces into the community while spreading awareness and speaking on the importance of diversity.

What’s been the best part of running this IG theme page?

Honestly, seeing so many new faces that we otherwise would never even notice. Being able to give them the spotlight regardless of follower count, years cosplaying, body size, or even skill level.

What’s been the worst part of running this IG theme page?

We get sooooo many feature requests. Back in October it was just me configuring everything and making the schedules, answering all the unanswered DM's, following as many new cosplayers as I can find.

It's all very overwhelming which is why I brought my friends in to give me a hand to help take some of the load off. And sadly a lot of people are impatient and want to be featured right then and there despite the fact we already have a backlog of features to get through as is. We've also had a few non-POC cosplayers get mad that we won't feature them on there which is always annoying but it is what it is.

How do cosplayers submit to be featured ? Email, hashtag or some other method ? How long does it take to be featured?

A bit of both actually. I knew a lot of Black cosplayers and knew where to find them. So at first I was just posting them to give me time to find new faces and figure out a good schedule. We don't do it through emails but we accept features via tagging us in photos and DM's on our Instagram, which now is A LOT more under control than when I first took the page over

Truth be told the answer is simple, WE DO THE WORK!! A lot of share pages just share people with thousands of followers continuously. Can't tell you how many share pages I see share the same people over and over. I remember one page sharing Jessica Nigri like once a week for a month, I love her but others should get the chance

So we look through hashtags, photos, posts, and our own suggested list. Also #29DaysofBlackCosplay was a huge help in finding so many new faces. We are constantly looking through them, at least 3 times a week now since we aren't low on features. So we try to space out our post features. So if we posted a cosplayer on say the 1st of June we wouldn't feature them again till the next month at the earliest. But we try to showcase new faces whenever we can.

Is there anything you like to add that wasn’t covered ?

Just this. Recently the amount of support we have been receiving has been phenomenal. We jumped up nearly double our follower count in under a month. We want to see more non POC cosplayers supporting Black and POC cosplayers. We wanna see more cons have POC guests, artists, and panelists at their cons. To be honest, it shouldn't be hard since there are so many talented non problematic cosplayers we have seen and featured on our page.

We need to have more diverse rosters of cosplayers as guests, all treated equally. It shouldn't be hard. Blerdcon & Dreamcon are like the only cons I see have black guests and hopefully more cons will do so. I would honestly love to see an all Black or even all POC cosplay guest roster at a con. I think that would be awesome.

And lastly, share pages need to do better at who they share. Because it irks me when I see them comment on our page about how amazing a cosplayer looks but will BARELY feature Black cosplayers.We have unfollowed soooooooo many share pages who do that.

We mainly want the community to do better. And be more welcoming to Black and POC cosplayers. Cause that's what a community is supposed to do.

Otaku Documentary- Swampcon Replacement

“If your culture doesn’t like geeks, you are in real trouble.”

I definitely won’t go into detail of how intensely I mourned the cancellation of Swampcon, even wondering how “bad” COVID-19 really was, much like Madarame breaking his wrist at the doujinshi convention in Genshiken. However, this documentary, albeit a bit dated, encapsulated the mindset behind American anime fan culture quite candid and truthfully. The experience was particularly enhanced by being able to watch it with my classmates, which was truly a barrel of laughs. This documentary violently coerced me into fondly reminiscing on my early days of fandom, at the ripe old age of 12.

To begin, the documentary starts by clarifying the definition of “otaku”, defined by Americans specifically. Although it gave many of these definitions, I felt as though it could have better explained why the anime community is so dispersed on the subject, explaining its denotation, connotation, and reclamation in Japan, much further than “that otaku serial killer”. As we know, the Miyazaki Incident has been described as “the exception that proves the rule” on the supposed societal danger of Japanese otaku, and I feel that the documentary could have provided more structure to itself by describing the Japanese atmosphere surrounding otaku through what Japanese fans think, as well as through background on the incident. This would provide a much clearer reason why some Japanese people differ from other Japanese people, and why some Americans differ from other Americans on this peculiar label for this specific social phenomena. Drawing from personal experience, I first embraced anime around January or February of 2013, when I was halfway through 6th grade. When this happened, I had recently gotten my first laptop for the previous Christmas, and was of course, entirely unsupervised. When I had became involved in various anime communities through social media, my first encounter with “otaku” was not with a positive connotation. It was described as someone who was ignorant to actual Japanese culture, and misusing a word that was actually “very derogatory” in Japan. That’s what I stuck with and believed until this class, where I learned that the question of otaku was far more complex. Thus, I feel that although they could have given a little more intercultural context, the use of interviews in the documentary was probably the best thing to do in order to display the wide variety of opinions on this matter.

The second part of the documentary went into a subgroup of American self-proclaimed otaku, the cosplayersCosplaying is a way in which fans are able to “take possession” of their obsessions, as described in Otaku: Japan’s Database Animals. It is interesting to note the pattern of who is interested in cosplay- it is often a lot of people that are involved in standing out somehow in their day to day lives, cosplayers are often fans of theatre or acting, as well as many other creative pursuits that involve a lot of work and talent. It’s also interesting to note that there are cosplayers who seem to be the opposite of this, almost a sort of alter ego, being timid in normal life, and outgoing at conventions. This displays the goal of cosplay- standing out and recognition. This isn’t as simple as cosplayers being any sort of “attention whores” as one interviewee said, but there is instead a wide variety of recognition that a cosplayer can receive, only one of them being “attention”. . The cosplayer that was interviewed through her whole process, focused on receiving recognition for her cosplay through winning a cosplay contest. Many other cosplayers seek it through how many people want to take pictures with/of their cosplay, and others through verbal compliments. The purest form of reaching this goal is taking pride in one’s own hard work- whether that work came through making the cosplay from scratch, or working to save up money to buy the cosplay, paying attention to all of the details. These are all forms of recognition, and many cosplayers combine them for their satisfaction. There is a form of fan discrimination that was overlooked in the documentary, concerning the cosplay community. Cosplayers that make their own cosplays tend to look down upon those that buy theirs. This is of course wrong, as they ignore that purchased cosplays are often significantly less complex costumes, and these “buyers” will still make things that they can’t find premade. It’s not taking an easy way out, but making use of the resources one is presented with, so that one can save time or money that could be spent on other cosplays or pursuits. From personal experience, I started truly cosplaying in 2014, and since then I’ve made 3 cosplays, and bought the others. Although I know that buying and making one’s cosplays are equally good, I’ve still internalized this fan discrimination. If someone asks if I made the cosplay I’m wearing, my “I bought it” is much more sheepish than it should be. It’s set in this community that making your cosplay dispenses more shadow cultural capital than buying it, for arbitrary reasons.

Fan discrimination such as this is seen in many facets of the American otaku community, and the idea of a flawlessly unified community as described in Part 3 of the documentary is very much a simulacra. The fan discrimination is reality, the idea of unity that people describe is the simulation, and perpetuating this onto outsiders watching the documentary, as well as new fans, providing an image of “nerds of a feather” that is spread even further and perpetuated by media, is the simulacra.

This is not to say that this idea of fan friendship is a tasteless sham, as nearly all of the friends I have to this day were made through the anime community, and the same can be said for lots of others.

I even pondered earlier that when I get married someday, my friend Brianna (she goes to another school, you don’t know her) could easily play a significant part in that. I chuckled to myself, since I never would have truly met her if not for our younger selves’ fervent interest in Axis Powers: Hetalia. This community, although filled with gaining possession of one’s obsession, stigmas and simulacrum, can easily seep into reality. Black Butler can turn into a real life bridesmaid.

Thus, the interpretations made by these interviewees aren’t perfect, but aren’t entirely inaccurate, either. As with any element of culture which dispenses capital, there is bound to be advantages and disadvantages. However, it is nearly miraculous how such a young community in the United States has more than made up for it’s lost time, I believe anime in the United States is passing from the popular subculture into the popular culture, a trend I noticed (although do not credit to) when I experienced the great successes of Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia.

BlerdCon is a convention that celebrates Black nerd culture, disabled, LGBTQ persons and others who are not normally included in other nerd spaces. So Blerdcon is often described as being different from other cons, while I can vouch for that being somewhat true, there were a lot of things that still felt familiar and that combination made things super comfortable. It’s really was just another anime/gaming convention with 95 percent black people in attendance

This was our first time at BlerdCon and I was super excited. This was an event for us (Blerds) by us (Blerds) and if there’s one thing I know about black folks, it’s that we know how to have a good time. From all the pictures and videos posted by from years prior, it looked fire! And for full disclosure, I was far from disappointed.

The first thing I want to talk about is cosplay. Everyone looked amazing! They really came to show out and I was totally here for it. We saw all types of cosplay: Anime, Genderbends, mash-ups and original characters. Adults and children alike. It’s really been a while since I’ve seen so many people in costume. The Cosplay community online is bigger the ever but numbers at cons are slowly declining. (bases on what I’ve seen) It was really nice seeing people of all shapes and sizes enjoying themselves without judgment.

Speaking of cosplay, I was able to attend the Cosplay Contest and Catwalk. Judges for the contest were Cin’ Von Quinzel, Papa Bear and CutiePieSensei and I was beyond impressed the entire time. Everyone looked so good and even the judges came to slay. They are all established cosplayers, whose pictures can be found all over the internet. Seeing them in person and them being equally as stunning and maybe arguable more captivating really puts things in perspective.

Before the cosplay contest, we attended Blerdcon’s J-Fashion Show hosted by DC KawaiiStyle and it was pretty dope. Everyone who participated looked fly as fuck. Five different designers participated and each had there own flair which is something that I could really appreciate. There were even a few pieces that I could see myself rocking. But the best thing about this whole experience was watching the unbridled joy on the faces of these model as they walked on and off the stage. That’s really what it’s all about.

There was also a little music festival which is a staple for me when attending any con. There a listening session with DMV producers J.Soul and Sinitus Tempo. Another by Hip Hop Veteran Substantial featuring a vocalist by the name of Stephanie Gayle. The eventful night was closed out by New York Femcee Sammus.

We spent a good chunk of time in the gaming area and had a fantastic time rolling down memory lane. Was able to play classics fighting games like Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat and Capcom vs. SNK. To more obscure titles like Shaq Fu, Primal Rage, Killer Instinct, and Windjammers. And newer games like Soul Calibur VI and Tekken 7.

There was a DJ Booth set up right smack in the middle of the gaming area. The steady stream of music called for a dance floor which became the space right in front of the booth. People were getting it in, in and out of cosplay. Black folks literally know how to turn any moment into a party. That is why I love us. The energy was so contagious that someone’s baby found there into the dance circle. The other dancers got hype with him. That really touched my little blerd heart.

One of the last things I want to talk about is the panels. There was a nice variety of panels. Topics that range in fandom, identity and so on so forth. The panel selection reflected all of what Blerdcon is. That is something that I really loved. There was the more serious panel from the minority perspective but then there were panels on that said I like this and I just so happen to be black. I think those types of panels are equally as important because we need to just be able to be without labels.

All in all, I had a pretty action-packed weekend. Even both the after-parties were jumpin’. Shout out the lovely staff at Blerdcon, for allowing us to come thru and cover this event. Shout out to all talent artist, cosplayers and beautiful peoples for just being in the building. Seeing so many smiling black faces really made me happy and I hope that we’ll be able to make it out next year. Blerdcon was a movie.
