No one truly knows how Proxies can be chosen. Not even the Enders that choose them, though they do find themselves drawn to certain people. People that meet their goals, people that are more attuned to their presences.

One thing has been learned, and its that children of people who have been chosen for Proxies can always be chosen as a Proxy.

Very few Enders will fall back onto this fail-safe. Benevolent masters have a greater ease of using this tactic, but its still grueling to go through the process of claiming a person for that role. A child wouldn't survive that process. So you have to wait for the child to grow; that child that will be raised by its parents, who most likely hate their role as a Proxy. Parents who will confide in their child, protect their child, risk their life for their child. There have been runaway proxies before, that have fled because they had a kid to protect.

Runaways are rare, but not impossible. Its incredibly difficult to sever the bond that master and servant have, and it can and will mentally impair them for a while, depending on how long they have served. Confusion, memory deterioration, PTSD, not to mention the symptoms that come with being in proximity to an irradiated being. Most long-term proxies take years to return to a semblance of normal.

Shorter-term proxies have more hope. If you manage to flee within the first year, your bond is weak enough, the symptoms of withdrawal will be less severe, and they won't recognize you as readily as they would have if they had kept you burned into their psyche for years.

Its still dangerous to run. No matter how gracious an Ender can be to it's Proxies, they're still exorbitantly possessive over what is their own. An Ender will hunt down its runaways maliciously until they can be reclaimed. Its not a futile action however, Enders aren't as all powerful as they proclaim. There are at least a small handful of ex Proxies that have fought for and kept their free will and autonomy.
