Me, watching Glorious 39 (after a decade of being all "Well that looks like a cast of everyone i like in one place"):
a) lol, even so that is a ridiculous dinner party to just assemble in a tent - oh, let's just have Bill Nighy, Romola Garai, David Tennant, Jenny Agutter, Eddie Redmayne & Jeremy Northam why not.
and
b) David Tennant you are so going to be murdered before this film goes any further, aren't you? That's why I hadn't even noticed you were in it.

#First of all: sorry for vagueposting#Honestly I find it hard to consider bsd a stranger to quite directly referencing the world wars...#There's literally a character from an anglophone country who threatens and was fully willing to drop exactly two bombs–#of immense destructive power that would raze the city... There's no way that's a coincidence...#Also the Guild attitude is very much the one of the usa invader that greatly effected Japan post wwii...#It is particularly evident by chapter 15‚ not to mention the way Fitzgerald struggles (read: refuses)–#to pronounce Japanese names correctly...#Bsd overall just makes a very unflattering‚ stereotypical depiction of people from the usa#- shallow and apathetic and disrespectful of other countries' culture and attached to economic interests -#that like. if you ask me really really speaks of holding resentment for the post wwii occupation of Japan.#And bsd **is** an extremely nationalist manga‚ peoples. c'mon. every single foreign character is a villain. c'mon.#It heavily implies it's better being Japanese mafia than a foreigner. c'mon...#And just in case - though there shouldn't be any need for me to say that#- I'm not American‚ I have no personal interest in defending the portrayal of Americans - and I don't mean to.#I'm just saying bsd's portrayal of foreigners is a biased portrayal that most definitely was heavily influenced by the USA's occupation–#of Japan and overall looks with hostility to all other countries and is in that deeply nationalist because... It is.#Lastly it's not completely true bsd authors had little to do with war: maybe it was an exception in Op's mind‚ but let's not forget about–#Thou Shalt Not Die. Although that's not about wws so maybe it's because of that...#It's just... The way it's always a war of Japan vs. Americans‚ Japan vs. Slavics‚ Japan vs. Brits...#Where Japan always comes out as the winner... It *does* speak of a of a subtle not-so-subtle nationalism‚ doesn't it#I don't know‚ we don't know enough about bsd's great war™ to speak‚ but to me it just feels like a big “Japan engaged in a war–#(deeply reminiscent of wws) against everyone else where it spilled blood and suffered but came out winner despite fighting alone because–#we're amazing” or something like that aldvdjskdvks.#Don't quote me on this though‚ I should reread the manga to make a proper statement on this#Sorry for being insufferable political sciences student it will happen again 😔😔#random rambles

Me, listening to 60s-70s rock/folk from Australia: Huh, why don't these vocalists sound distinctively Australian? Why is their diction indistinguishable from other popular "British Invasion" groups of the period?

Oh god. I was going to make a joke about the ~hue~ of the sleeper ships mentioned in the opening of Freelancer, but I looked StarLancer, the previous game where all that opening nonsense came from, and ♪♫♪guess the nationalities of the bad guys’ side♪♫♪
I wasn’t even looking that up in particular. I just wanted to make a joke about the main character from Bretonia speaking with a pronounced American accent, and I found this when I was trying to check the character’s home planet (it was Leeds, I was correct)
Africa is completely forgotten, of course. For reasons, I am sure. And it certainly is something that Kusari, the Japanese-ish ones, are the final human bad guys that you have to face that have been infected by the aliens before you go on to the main bad guy. It is... something.

I love how many stories there are from WWII where people survive encounters with nazis, even the gestapo, simply by bullying them and claiming to know important nazi members.
I’m listening to the podcast A Very Secret Life where a man tells his dad’s story. He was part Danish, part German, and worked as a spy for England. He was very valuable to the Brits because being part German and being able to speak perfect German meant the nazis trusted him. He almost got caught during a mission in Germany but managed to escape simply by yelling at the German police and saying he had some very important stuff to deliver to their superiors so they better call their damn office and then they’d see who was in trouble!
When he finally escaped to Denmark the gestapo showed up at his mom’s apartment looking for him and she did the same thing. She was full blooded German and stated shouting at them about her important cousin who outranked all of them and she even chased them all the way down the stairs and started kicking their cars until they left. That meant nobody suspected her of secretly being a nazi supporter after the war despite being German because everyone remembered her chasing the gestapo away.
It’s such a classic scenario when you base a system on fear. I’ve heard of western soldiers in the Middle East who backed out of a situation because someone threatened to get them in trouble with their superiors. Will any military ever learn to stop being so mean to their people they end up spending more time trying to avoid their own bosses than anything else?

VOTE! if you please!
UPDATE! Voting is closed, here is the finished work!
It Takes Three to Forget
I'm going to write a threesome fic with MOTA Gale 'Buck' and John 'Bucky', so inspired by @austinbutlerslovers Bucked and Fucked fic was I .
I'm curious what ya'll might want to see as far as perspective. I know I don't' want to do 2nd person (you), but wondering what appeals and I thought I'd try out this poll thingy!
Tumblr media
Examples, just for fun:
1st person:
When I saw those two stroll through the door of the London pub, I was instantly sure I would take at least one of them home tonight. Both were tall; one dark, one blonde. Both American soldiers; one outgoing, one clearly not. Both were ridiculously handsome. They were exactly why I had come out tonight. I needed to forget and I did that best with an attentive man between my legs. I looked around for my companions from the WVS. I know that a pair of women are easier to approach for a pair of men, less competition, you see. Each and every one was already dancing with, talking to, or tucked into corners with their own British boys. I shook my head, I guess I was flying solo.
I liked how the American boys didn't bat an eye at my social status. So many of the Brits wouldn't dare look on a Viscountess as a potential sex partner. But the American's held no such qualms. These two had the look of men that also needed to forget. Perfect, we can help each other out then.
Should I be out fucking men? Yes... yes I should. It's a fucking war and as of a year ago today, I'm all alone in this world.
3rd Person:
She was sipping her drink when they entered, two American soldiers. One was dark, one blonde and both were achingly handsome. They were exactly what she needed tonight. Two gorgeous men that didn't care that she was a widowed Viscountess.
"What do they raise those yanks on over there to make them so damn ..." her sentence petered out as she turned to the empty stools beside her. Her companions from the WVS had already been swept away by local boys. All of them. She shrugs and prepares to fly solo. At least one of these boys is coming home with her tonight.
They strolled in, John was happy that he could drag his buddy out for the weekend pass, they both needed it. Needed to forget the horrors of the sky. They sky with both of them had once loved so much, yet had become a place of torture that they just had to endure.
"I gotta get you laid Buck," the tall one was saying, "I know, I know, you are loyal to a fault, but you gotta live a little in case you die. I promised her I'd take care o' you, and this counts pal."
Thanks for voting darlings! Feel free to share to peeps who might be interested!
Let me know if you want to be tagged!

Hey there! What you are doing is really cool and Id like to ask if you can recommend fics that take place during wwi or wwii? Preferably with no smut and stuff like that in it?
Hello! Here are some fics for you...
Who Dares, Wins by Santillatron (M)
Aziraphale is an officer in the British Army. He hears about a fellow Brit captured somewhere he shouldn't have been, who is being kept far behind enemy lines and is apparently holding up miraculously well against the German methods of persuasion. He absconds to rescue him accompanied by a small band of men who decide to tag along, and the rest, as they say, is history...
In all my dreams before my helpless sight by SleepySelfLoathing (M)
Crowley doesn't remember the shell that destroyed his leg, but he wishes he could forget everything that came after. -- Or: Crowley loses a leg, Aziraphale is a nurse, and the Great War trudges on. Somehow, we all find rest.
Even to the Edge by hope_in_the_dark (T)
The Battle of Passchendaele isn't at all what Ezra was expecting. It's far worse than he could have imagined in more ways than he can count, and all he can think about is survival. And then he meets a man who changes (and saves) his life, and there is suddenly something that he cares about losing.
you're gone, and heaven cries by Imagined (T)
In 1915, Aziraphale goes to war. He heals, despite Heaven's belief that he shouldn't be using his miracles on humans, and sits by the bedsides of men he shouldn't be saving. And he writes - letters he shouldn't be composing, to a demon that will never see them.
Shell Shock by EdosianOrchids901 (T)
Not long after the church bombing, Crowley shows up on Aziraphale’s doorstep. He’s disoriented, on the verge of collapse, clearly in shock. Aziraphale isn't sure what happened, but he's determined to help. Can he?
The Angel of Dunkirk by imnotokaywiththerunning (M)
TV verse AU Springtime 1940: Hitler's army has started its march across Europe and Aziraphale is worried. Another war so soon after the last was almost unbearable. He and Crowley have decided to stay well out of it, but a visit from the Archangel Gabriel sends Aziraphale headfirst into a war he never wanted to see.

My new favorite crack headcanon I’ve seen floating around is that Disney Hook is the accidental (and unknown) hero of WWII in Return to Neverland’s version of London. Someone pointed out that the evacuations in London happened very early on in the war but by the end of the movie, Edward is already home. While there is still a definite timeskip between Edward initially leaving and coming back (you can tell Danny looks younger when Edward leaves), it seems the tide of the war turned literally overnight when Jane is whisked away to Neverland. Rather than cartoon logic, the theory posits that the Germans in those planes going over London took one look at Hook’s massive ship flying through the sky, assumed it was some kind of test run of a new British secret weapon, and just immediately noped their way out of there like, “Uh, ya know what? I don’t know what kind of dark magic technology these Brits have access to, but if they can do THAT…maybe we should just…call the whole thing off. Seriously. Get someone on the phone right now and tell them we surrender.”
And that’s how Hook single-handedly (ha!) ended WWII. Or at least Britain’s involvement in it.

The absolute horror of Oppenheimer is cinched in Truman's short appearance for me. This idea he voices that none of the victims care who created the bomb, only who dropped it on them...
It's all too real. In the film it's a bitch slap.
Beyond it, for us, it's the inexorable conclusion that the bomb would have been created no matter what. The moment that first paper was published, every scientist understood the A bomb as a concept was a possibility. And once that concept was out in the open, it was only a matter of time before an aggressive enough country put the effort in to create it.
As the iconic Ambessa Medarda says it in Arcane, "Weapons cannot be unmade and they are always used". Truer words, etc.
If not Oppenheimer then the Soviets first (Nazis never stood a chance, since they were making life for their jewish scientists, well... You can guess how hard), or the Brits, who knows. And with no reason to drop it on Japan if it came after the end of WWII, god knows in what setting in might have been used. We can always speculate, but the depressing ending of this film was that someone had to do the work, and the people at Los Alamos did.
Someone had to be handed the baby, and Oppenheimer was.
And yet we don't blame him for that. We understand the inexorability of progress in science. Hey, we've all seen or read Jurassic Park, right? We blame the politicians who used it, because with the finished product it was their call.
That Truman scene almost had the feeling of a little mercy. Oppie saying he's afraid he has blood on his hands, and Truman shaming him in the same breath he whipes his hands of that metaphorical blood and reassures him it's all his--all while waving a handkerchief like he took him literally.
God Gary Oldman making me write essays with his 2min appearance.
ANYWAY. Yes, it's dark. The "I am become death, destroyer of worlds" line is iconic, but it was also a straw waiting to be drawn. The scientific world itself was gestating this monstrosity, and Oppie was the midwife. First willing, then reluctant. And my heart goes to him for that.

The Brewster SB2A Buccaneer (Bermuda in the UK) may be the worst WWII plane. Despite making 771 units it was plagued with quality issues. Brits deemed it unfit for combat and used it as a target tug, while the USN deemed unfit even for training and many were scrapped never used.

I don’t know if this will reach anyone, and quite frankly, I don’t give a fuck. I have shit I need to say and shit that people need to hear.
First and foremost, Free Palestine. It has always been Free Palestine, and will always be Free Palestine.
My earliest memory of the occupation of Palestine was when I was seven. At the age of seven, I had the emotional maturity, the human decency to look at what was happening and come to the conclusion that the Palestinians were innocent. They were being forced out of their homes by the settle colony isr*el, and that they needed to be freed.
If I, at the mere age of seven, can come to that conclusion, then what the fuck are the world leaders in GOVERNMENT doing? I’m a Muslim, Alhamdulillah, and as a Muslim, I have utter belief in the fact that Palestine will indeed be free one day, by the will of Allah S.W.T. I have no doubt about it, but as a human, I am begging for a ceasefire on the attacks in Gaza, on innocent civilians. isr*el has cut off water, food, electricity and fuel. They had previously prevented aid from entering from Egypt, only just allowing twenty trucks of aid in to Gaza, which we all know does nothing to help the 2.2 million people there.
For 75 years, Palestine has been illegally occupied, Palestinians have been slaughtered and forced out of their homes. Everyday, they live in constant fear. Not just in Gaza, but also in the West Bank (which Hamas has no presence there, if you were wondering). Everyday of their lives, they’ve been beaten, hit, killed. And on October 7th, they decided to fight back.
And before you come for me, I do not condone the murder of innocents, like children. But, I cannot also say that all those isr*elis are innocent. Just them calling themselves isr*elis makes them somewhat accountable as they are saying they accept the apartheid, the genocide and ethnic cleansing. isr*el is not a state. It is a settler colony, and in my eyes, I will never ever recognise them as anything else.
Also, not to mention that in 2019 69% of men and 56% of women were serving in the army (I couldn’t find more recent statistics than that, I’m afraid.) But, at the same time, a life lost is a life lost. It’s heartbreaking, and my prayers are with all those who have lost family.
But, let’s move onto Gaza.
2.2 million people. 25 miles long and 5 miles wide. Over 1.1 million are children. The death toll is now over 5000. Over 1700 of them are CHILDREN. Over 51% of people in Gaza are now homeless, due to their homes being bombed and having no safe place to go. If you look up the amount of people who are homeless in the UK and the US, add those two figures together, and you’ll see that it still doesn’t come close to the amount of displaced people in Gaza. Two of the most powerful countries in the world, the US being one of the largest, and Gaza being literally 25 miles long.
Put that into perspective.
I’m fucking sick to death. Sick to death of bitch-ass celebrities like the Kardashians and the Jenners and Jamie Lee-Curtis and so many more who post their support for isr*el, without having a single fucking clue about the historical context of this genocide.
Palestine was always, and has forever been Palestine. The brits ‘gave’ Palestine to the jews after the atrocities of WWII, and Palestinians welcomed them.
Then the Nakba happened in 1948.
This is a crime against humanity, a massacre of Palestinians, a slaughter of children. This is another Holocaust.
And, if you support Palestine, that does not make you antisemitic. It makes you human. Orthodox Jews from all over the world have showcased their support for the Palestinians- they do not claim Israel, do not believe it to be their land, and have and always will recognise it as Palestine.
This is not a war. This is not a conflict. This is ethnic cleansing. It isn‘t limited to religion, as there are Muslims, Christians and Jews in Palestine.
You don’t have to be Muslim to support Palestine, you just have to be human.
I’m sorry if this is all over the place. There’s so much I want to say, and it’s difficult to articulate when I’m this angry. I’m just going to say one last thing.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. 🇵🇸

I just finished the series "kampen om tungtvannet" on nrk. I had no idea it was such an important part of ww2 but it seems almost no one talks or knows about it? at least we didn't learn anything about it in history class
I binged the series today because of this ask ✨ been meaning to do it for a while now
tbh though, the second world war has sooo many operations in so many different countries that all had an effect on the war in some way - many more Norwegian ones too. It would be very difficult to learn about all of them in history class 😅 series etc are great ways to learn about them though!
I'm not always a fan of Norwegian television, and there's a lot of bad stuff I cannot watch, but films and series set during wwii are always great? Kampen om Tungtvannet was actually really good, no complaints.
The series is about Norwegian people working with Brits at the Norwegian camp in Scotland, to bomb the heavy water factory back in Norway because the Germans want to use it to make an atomic bomb - something that would make the allies loose the war. There is also an American there for some reason who just wants to bomb everything as a solution 🤔

I have a potentially strange question, but the search feature on Tumblr leaves a lot to be desired - do you know of any good WWII whump? Specifically that might involve hospital scenes, or takes place in Europe vs the Pacific theater? The WWII movies I know off the top of my head that involve (admittedly brief) scenes in a hospital/dealing with illness rather than injury are Unbroken (Japan) and Hacksaw Ridge (also Japan), The Great Raid (Phillipines), Flags of Our Fathers (Japan again), and Empire of the Sun (Japan and China). If context helps, I'm working on a one shot for Sam Gillespie and Sister Boniface and referencing his time on Sword Beach. (if you haven't seen it, highly recommend - WWII vet DI is besties with a former code-cracking nun who moonlights as the police scientific advisor and the solve crimes and make puns in 1960's Cotswolds).
I can definitely help you here!! I tend to lean more towards watching ETO WWII media myself. And oddly enough a lot of I've watched doesn't have that much whump. Which is weird for a war film/show. But here are some things I'd recommend:
Band of Brothers - follows U.S. Army troops of E "Easy" Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from their training in England through D-Day and the rest of the war in Europe.
World on Fire - this show follows characters in Warsaw, Manchester, Berlin, and Paris during their lives as the Nazi party begins to take hold of Europe. Season 1 is set from March 1939 to July 1940 and shows events like the Defense of the Polish Post Office in Danzig, the Battle of the River Plate, the Dunkirk evacuation and the Battle of Britain. Season 2 covers October 1940 to May 1941 and shows the North Africa Campaign, The Blitz, Nazi Germany, and Occupied France.
X-Company - follows five recruits as they are trained as agents at a secret Canadian training facility, Camp X near Lake Ontario east of Toronto and then sent out into the field in Europe.
Dunkirk (2017) - This movie is all about the Battle of Dunkirk and the
Atonement (2007) - Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.
Combat! - a tv series from the 60s that follows a front line American infantry squad as they battled their way across Europe
Saints and Soldiers (2003) - Four American soldiers and one Brit fighting in Europe during World War II struggle to return to Allied territory after being separated from U.S. forces during the historic Malmedy Massacre.
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - Set in 1944 in France during World War II, it follows a group of soldiers, led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), on their mission to locate Private James Ryan whose three brothers have been killed in combat
finally I totally need to watch sister boniface!! that sounds great!

I love WWII related media but it can get very frustrating to watch as a Polish person sometimes and let me tell you why. The majority of WWII media produced by the US and/or the UK present the war like it has only been between the USA, Great Britain, France and Germany. Eastern European countries aren't mentioned and characters from them usually don't exist or are mentioned in the background. If Poland is referred to, it's only referred to as a place Hitler invaded or the country where Auschwitz camp is. And countries like Czech Republic or Hungary aren't referred to at all usually.
Just as if Eastern European countries didn't have underground armies and resistance. Just as if they didn't struggle and fight, usually in way worse conditions than occupied Western countries (for example I've read that Poland was the only country where people were killed with their whole families for hiding Jewish neighbors and friends).
I'm aware that it's most likely a result of the fact our countries ended up behind the curtain of communism (which we didn't want and western countries just basically gave us away to Stalin because who cares...) but it's so unfair, it's hurtful and it erases a huge part of the history.
Our countries were on the winning side of this war and yet we ended up as losers and no one even cares. Just compare Germany's quality of life to ours. Even during communism, the communist part of Germany had better life conditions than other communist countries (so my family says).
I know that lots of other sides of this war are also being overlooked – Spain, Japan, North Africa... All for the sake of making yet another movie about Brits going to France.
