Sleater-Kinney and Black Belt Eagle Scout at Brooklyn Steel
On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, rock band Sleater-Kinney kicked off their three shows in New York City with a first night at Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, NY. The group was joined by Black Belt Eagle Scout (a.k.a. Katherine Paul) for an opening set on their tour in support of their newest record, Little Rope.
This was my first time I captured Sleater-Kinney performing live since 2015*. My gallery of Sleater-Kinney was done for Bowery Presents’ “The House List,” and it now available here. Images of Black Belt Eagle Scout can be found below.
Sleater-Kinney will return to Brooklyn Steel again tonight (Thursday, March 14th) for a sold out show, and head to Manhattan to Racket on Saturday night (that show is sold out as well).
*I also photographed them in December 2014 during an appearance on “The Chris Gethard Show” where Priests performed.

Directed by Taika Waititi.
Distributed by Searchlight Pictures. 103 minutes. Rated PG-13.
It’s always amusing when people from offbeat different places attach on to sports, no matter how good or bad (usually bad) they may be, just for pure love of the game.
True stories like these have become fodder for Hollywood in the past. For example, there was the Jamaican Bobsled team, an oddball group who became something of an international sensation when they competed in the Winter Olympics starting in 1988. It was such an odd idea – where could they learn the bobsled in the tropics of Jamaica? – that it caught the attention of the world and was eventually turned into the popular 1993 feel-good comedy Cool Runnings with John Candy. Of course, they weren’t great at the sport, but they got better over the years, eventually even getting a gold medal in 2000.
Then there was Eddie the Eagle – the first British ski jumper to compete in the Olympics. (Oddly, he also started in the 1988 Winter Olympics – what was going on in Calgary that year?) He also had little actual talent for the sport – he finished last in both competitions he competed in – but his regular guy enthusiasm made him a bit of a pop culture icon briefly. His story was also turned into a film, the 2016 film Eddie the Eagle starring Taron Egerton.
And now, we have the American Samoan national football (soccer) squad. They were long considered one of the weakest teams on the circuit, including losing a game to Australia by an all-time record score of futility, 31-0.
It seems like a natural fit for Taika Waititi to downshift a bit. It feels like a return to his roots after several years in the Hollywood grind – low-key early New Zealand oddball comic charmers like Eagle vs. Shark and Hunt For the Wilderpeople.
Based upon a 2014 documentary about the team, Next Goal Wins makes a nice palate cleanser for the filmmaker after helming two bombastic Thor films (only one really successfully) and making the surreal comic art film Jo Jo Rabbit.
Not that there is all that much to the story of Next Goal Wins – but it is a simple (and yet eccentric, because Waititi couldn’t be anything else) bit of formula filmmaking. This film is not looking to rule the box office (like, say Thor: Ragnarök) or to make a run at Oscar gold (like Jo Jo Rabbit). It’s just trying to be a fun diversion.
The film sort of plays up the football team’s ineptitude and small-time roots. The film often says that the team had never scored a goal and their only real wish was to score at least once – but they scored a goal in their first game in 1983, which was about 38 years before this film takes place in 2011. (And undoubtedly, they scored at least some in the decades between. In fact, apparently, they even won at least one game in the years before this film takes place.) Perhaps they meant in that season…. But they were historically bad. Of that, no one will argue.
Their savior – or sort of – might be Thomas Rongen (Fassbender). Rongen is an American coach and scout who himself needs some salvation – his daughter died recently in an accident, he was separated from his wife (Moss), he was drinking way too much and had become completely jaded. His problems multiplied to the point where he was given an ultimatum – go down to American Samoa and coach their team, or never work in the sport again.
Thus starts a typical fish out of water comedy, in which the hard-headed and driven new coach has to learn to deal with the more laid-back players and customs of American Samoa. If you have any question what will eventually happen then you haven’t seen a sports film in recent decades. However, the culture clash and eccentric characters keep everything interesting and funny.
Sometimes a team – or a movie – doesn’t have to go to a championship to become big winners. Sometimes they just need to score some goals. Next Goal Wins will never become a beloved classic sports tale, but damned if they don’t score some goals.

HARTFORD WOLF PACK REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - For the Hartford Wolf Pack and their parent organization, the New York Rangers, the lazy, hazy summer days are winding down. The teams are two weeks away from training camp opening in Tarrytown, NY and then the Wolf Pack training camp at the XL Center starts a couple of weeks later.  There are still moves being made in the hockey world. The Rangers have hired Angela Ruggiero (Choate Rosemary Hall-Wallingford) to join Peter Laviolette’s coaching staff as a Hockey Operations Adviser. No clear reporting on what her responsibilities will be. Rangers President Chris Drury (Trumbull) and she were both selected and entered the US Hockey Hall of Fame together with the Class of 2015. Ruggerio played for several US Women's Olympic teams and won a gold, two silvers, and a bronze medal. She earned four gold medals and six silvers in international World Championship action. In 1999, the Harvard grad with an MBA degree won a national title with the Crimson, and the defenseman won the Patty Kazmier Award as the top college female hockey athlete in 2004. She played for two women’s professional leagues in her active playing days. She was part of the CWHL (Canadian Women’s Hockey League) and the WWHL (Western Women’s Hockey League) during her 11-year career. Ruggerio retired in 2011. She has been involved in the business side of hockey since then. Hiring Ruggerio is part of the overall revamping of the Rangers coaching staff. HARTFORD CONNECTED ATHLETES MAKING MOVES Casey Torres, an ex-Pack assistant coach for one year and who was out of hockey last year, is back in. was named the assistant coach for the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). After a year off from hockey, ex-Pack Peter Holland signs with the Colorado Avalanche organization and will likely be skating with the Colorado Eagles next season. Holland last played in Sweden two years ago. Holland was traded from the Wolf Pack in 2018-19, a week after then-captain Cole Schneider. The belief is that Schneider was dealt because of the manner in which he tried to motivate then rookie, and now an unsigned ex-Pack, Libor Hájek. Apparently, Schneider's actions angered former Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge, who is now an assistant coach with the Bakersfield Condors. Ex-Pack Jake Elmer dissolves his contract with Odense in Denmark and signs with the Dundee Stars (Scotland-EIHL) for next season. Jeff Heil was a backup goaltender for 11 games during the Wolf Pack's first season. His son Caleb, also a goalie, is involved in the game. He played for the Sioux City (SD) U-16 AAA (T1EHL) team and nine games for the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) last season and has verbally committed to play in two years at the University of North Dakota (NCHC). Jabez Seymour, a Newfoundland native from the Selects Academy program at South Kent Prep-SKP U-15 team last year, signed with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, who drafted him in the first-round 18th overall in the June QMJHL Draft. After six years as a head coach for Kootenay/Winnipeg Ice (WHL), ex-Whaler/Ranger James Patrick signed to be the new Director of Player Development for the Victoria Royals (WHL). The team in Winnipeg was sold to a group of the Wenatchee (WA) Wild, who moved up from the Junior A level BCHL to the major junior WHL. One of the players to start the year there will be Easton Armstrong, who is the youngest son of ex-Pack legend Derek Armstrong. He'll play his overage year to start with Wild. After four years as the Northern Ontario Scout for Kingston Frontenacs (OHL), ex-Sound Tiger Brent Gauvreau returns to his hometown as an assistant coach with the Sudbury Wolves (OHL). AHL signings to Europe now stand at 76. The latest, Alex Galchenyuk, leaves the Colorado Eagles (AHL) for SKA St. Petersburg (Russia-KHL). Sweden leads in the signees department with 30. Maxim Barbashev, who was in the Wolf Pack house late last season when his junior season ended but never played a game, was involved in a pre-season QMJHL trade as he was moved from the Moncton Wildcats and will play his third season with the Shawinigan Cataractes. Ex-Pack Josh Nicholls leaves Kunlun Red Star (China-KHL) for a second time and signs with the Sheffield Steelers (England-EIHL). SIGNINGS/TRANSFERS The college to pro signings North America/Europe, and the transfer in-school and graduate continues. North America first, Hockey East leads all conferences with 38, and the NCHC conference has 37. The Big Ten and the CCHA each have 34, the ECACHL 25, and the AHA 21. Division III is at 32, and attending Canadian colleges four and undergrads departing early is 39. Independent Division I schools now have 14, signed in Europe is 62, and returning to American junior hockey is two. Surprisingly, none have yet to come from Canadian major juniors. The total number stands at 301. The transfers collegiately have exploded in-school is 102 and graduate 68. UCONN UCONN finally announced its official incoming class for the college hockey season. Ethan Haider is a post-grad goaltender from Clarkson. He is expected to split time with the returning Arsenii Sergeev (Calgary). Another grad transfer will be Ryan Mashie of RPI (ECACHL). Incoming freshmen will feature Oliver Flynn (Wolcott/CT Chiefs (AYHL)/Loomis Chafee Prep-Windsor). Forward Joey Muldowney, D Owen Simpson, and Bauer Swift (West Hartford/Choate Rosemary Hall-Wallingford). Swift has an older brother (Cooper) and younger brother (Easton) involved in hockey and are both named after a hockey equipment brand. Rayen Petrovický, the son of former Hartford Whaler and Ranger Róbert Petrovický, elects to sign with VHK Vestin (Czechia (Czech Republic-Division-II) for 2023-24. It took just two days for ex-Yale Bulldog Ken Agostino’s one-year deal with Skellefteå AIK (Sweden-SHL) to be terminated. The team said it received backlash for signing someone who played in Russia for the last two years with the ongoing war in Ukraine. He played on the 2022 US Olympic squad at the Beijing Games. Howlings previously reported on the strange anomaly of current and ex-North American players signing deals with KHL clubs despite the war and public declaration that the NHL wanted nothing to do with Russia, where no transfer agreement exists. A long line of players behind Agostino have all done the same thing. Per Elite Prospects.com, as of last week, 53 North Americans are in the KHL, 39 Canadians, 15 Americans, and 22 players from EU nations are listed in the KHL. Russian and European training camps are about to end as their regular season starts next month. Will other EU clubs announce their rescinding any dealings with any of these players or others? Wolcott native Nick DiNicola, who played youth hockey for the CT Jr. Wolves (AYHL), CT Clippers (AYHL), Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack (ATJHL), CT (Stamford) Yankees (USPHL-Premier) then under the direction of ex-Wolf Pack/Sound Tiger Jeff Hamilton (Yale University & AOF) and had five games with the Danbury Hat Tricks (FPHL) leaves Como (Italy Division-2) for Chiavenna (Italy Division-3) for next season. By the way, Hamilton has owned the CT Jr. Rangers (NCDC) for the last two years and is out as owner. He was involved with the Mid-Fairfield Rangers U-14 team as head coach last year. Five ex-Whalers were at the golf club at Avon Country Club last weekend for a charity event. They included Ron Francis, Ulf Samuelsson, Mike  Liut, Dave Tippett, and Joel Quenneville. The tournament was named, honoring Quinneville's late nephew Connor Scott Zieky. None of them made it to the Yard Goats Whaler Day last month. The Yard Goats official assistant GM, Dean Zappolorti, said Francis informed him he would come next year and help him recruit other players to attend. If that happens and Pat Boutette gets Mike Rogers and Blaine Stoughton to return, it will be a home run (pun intended) next year. Ex-Pack Domenic Moore is playing in the Over-40 Senior Canadian Tennis Championships. During the hockey season, he works as an Analyst for ESPN. An NHL source regarding the Phoenix situation. “It’s a mess. We hear that they're looking to secure land now, but they have to get something soon. It’s become an embarrassment…a sore point for the league, a  black eye. The player’s association is unhappy, they’re losing money and owners are getting tired of spending money to keep them going. Sooner or later, something has to give, soon, it just can’t keep going on like this. When a kid like (Logan) Cooley, a next generation likely NHL star, signs reluctantly, leaving a larger arena he had in college (Minnesota) for a smaller one in Arizona, that they’re not even selling out, things have to get done in short order. They’re gonna have to move them most likely if they don’t nail things down soon.” HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

The First Time You Meet Me You’ll Think I’m Crazy The Second Time You_ll Know For Sure T shirt
Rugby has something the NFL lacks — the tantalising prospect of representing your country in a meaningful international competition. In the 24 years of pro Rugby Union, the USA have traditionally had a rag-tag bunch of professional players ranging from second generation migrants from rugby playing families like Samu Manoa, who was playing amatuer rugby in the US and was talent scouted from a US reserve team tour into the top flight of European club rugby, to players like former USA captain Chris Wyles who was born in the states but moved to England as a The First Time You Meet Me You’ll Think I’m Crazy The Second Time You_ll Know For Sure T shirt and played his rugby in Europe. One of the guys from our school team in England ended up playing for the USA at the Rugby World Cup because he had an American born mother. Other USA players like AJ McGinty (who is Irish and plays for an English club) qualify for the USA national team via residency after studying there. If rugby takes off in the US as a semi-pro / pro club game, there is every likelihood of good college footballers switching sports and America producing a team of majority home-grown talent, but unlikely it will include many ex-NFL players, if any.

Note
headcanon: adrian was a boy scout, and then promptly got kicked out of boy scouts for trying to correct the leaders with some nonsense his brother and chris told him.
omg
join the sleepover!
adrian was definitely a boy scout, but he didn't join until he was in his second year of high school
(he was still kinda small, hadn't even started puberty so his parents signed him up to try and spurn his growth or something. anything, really.)
his brother and chris were both living at home. chris dropped out of college after the first year, while gut made it the whole way.
adrian had always looked up to chris, but when his brother left for college and chris came back home, he was even more obsessed, being only 8 years old at the time.
when gut came home, everyone rolled out the red carpet and there was a huge tailgate outside chris' trailer to celebrate
"prince charming has a fuckin college degree now. oh, wait, sorry, is it doctor prince charming?" chris teases, and adrian busts up with laughter
"i got a fuckin bachelor's dickhead" gut punched him on the arm, and that was his homecoming
the next two years were gut and chris doing their best semi-okayest to prepare adrian for high school
"don't tell anyone your dick hasn't grown. guarantee they already know by that pipsqueak of a voice."
"chris, shut the fuck up. adrian you're still a kid, trust me. nobody's gonna wanna see your dick anyway you're too weird lookin"
gut pushed his forehead, and adrian was too stoked to be getting life advice from his literal role models to notice the insults
when he was headed on his first camping trip with the troop, chris and gut sat him down to prepare him
adrian was in the older group, 15-18, and even though he knew when someone was attractive, he just wasn't the bundle of hormones that everyone else his age was
"listen, these camping trips are just one big orgy out in the woods. don't let em tell you different." chris pointed his finger at adrian, nudging gut on the shoulder to get his confirmation
"yeah, there may not be any chicks, but that doesn't mean there's not other shit going down. so when it's late and your buddy's tent next door starts rockin, do not come knockin."
adrian nodded, listening in earnest even though they might as well have been speaking another language
the first night of the camping trip, he'd been awoken by screaming
unzipping the tent he brought and did not share, he was the first one out in the dark forest night.
the tent across the way from his was shaking, and he stood there frozen, gut's words echoing in his ears
he was startled by the sight of two scoutmasters running over to the screaming tent
"NO!"
adrian screamed, and ran over to stop him
"you're not supposed to go in when it's shaking like that"
the absurdity of his statement shocked them into pausing, and the two boys in the tent came barreling out after, a raccoon hot on their tails
the scoutmaster jumped back, and turned furiously to adrian. the second leader shook his head and ran off to tend to the boys
"what did you just say, chase?"
"w-well. if the tent is rocking, you shouldn't come knocking. because of the-the orgy?"
the scoutmaster glared at him, "where did you hear that?"
adrian stood there in confusion, "my brother and my best friend. they were boy scouts too. eagle scouts, actually."
the scoutmaster pinched between his eyebrows and closed his eyes
"chase, pack your stuff. i'm calling your brother to pick you up."
adrian had no complaints.

TWIABPAIANLATD: Illusory Walls
Yellow Swans: EVERYTHING*
ylva trax: LYV 2
ゆらゆら帝国‘s ユラユラウゴク & Evil Car
Bold and italicized indicates a favorite released this year.
I really like all of those bold albums for completely different reasons. They all satisfy different moods and emotions. If I had to choose a favorite, I’d probably go with Our Hands Against The Dusk, it’s incredibly gorgeous. I really like Beyond The Yellow Haze, INTROSPECTIO and Departing Like Rivers too. INTROSPECTIO was the most surprising to me. It goes above and beyond what I was expecting compared to his previous album.
My taste in music is changing in a really major way. This was the year of noise, drone, shoegaze and dream pop. I’ve been into those for a while now, but I really went in this year. I think the last time I really had a major shift of this magnitude was around a decade ago. That’s when I was really getting into Tom Waits, Death Grips were starting to gain steam, GY!BE had destroyed my ideas of what music could be in 2007, and ‘70s Miles Davis and Swans were about to push that even further.
Aesop Rock: That came out late last year, and I never got around to listening to it. He keeps getting better. Aesop consistently has songs that will make me laugh one minute, and then self isolate for a month the next. There are times when it feels like he is a little too open with his struggles, but that’s what makes it special. Getting to hear his evolution as both a rapper and producer over the last decade has been a joy.
Antarctica: Thank you @anarchist-caravan the EP is interesting because you can hear them putting things together. It all comes together on the album in an astonishing way.
Black Belt Eagle Scout: I picked up her first album early in the year after being floored by the second last year. I wrote a post during the summer where I talked about how her music accesses an emotional plain that I feel is inaccessible to me. I am really quite taken by this woman. Her second album is my most listened to album this year.
City Girls: That sample is so fucking perfect. Just yes, yes, YES!
Coil: I have known about Coil for well over a decade, and have jumped around their ‘80s and late era output here and there for a few years now. I finally started digging into the ‘90s stuff. I like the ‘80 stuff, I enjoy the late stuff, but wow at the ‘90s stuff. I don’t know why I’m so surprised, my introduction to them were the ‘90s Nine Inch Nails remixes I love so much.
DIIV: Is The Is Are is becoming one of my favorite albums, period, F#A# level.
Doja Cat: I do not like her as a rapper. I don’t think I ever will, but goddamn she fucking kills those pop songs. I had Say So on last year’s list, but I like Streets more.
Gnod: I don’t remember how I came across them, but yes! I’m enjoying their older stuff more, but I’ve loved everything I’ve listened to from them. The newer stuff sounds like early Swans. It doesn’t have the sheer terror/rage early Swans has, but who does?
SOPHIE: :(
Yellow Swans: I think after I started listening to Gnod, Last.fm recommended me Yellow Swans. In years past, I used to label something I’d come across as “this is what I’ve been looking for.” When I say that this is what I’ve been looking for, I mean THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE! GY!BE in 2007, DJ Shadow and Slowdive in 2009, ‘70′s Miles Davis and Swans in 2010, Wild Nothing’s Nocturne in the mid 2010′s, R Beny and Gas in the late 2010′s, and now this. I like their earlier stuff, particularly Dosed, which has me looking at the the TR-8S and Eurorack like “we have to try this!” But the later stuff, At All Ends, Drowner, Deterioration, Mort Aux Vaches, Going Places and Being There have rearranged my DNA.
I’ve decided that 2022 is the year I sit down and really dig into jazz again. I really want to go back and explore the more experimental side of jazz. Go well beyond Miles, John, Alice, Ornette, Sun Ra and so on.
Special thanks to @anarchist-caravan @knightofleo @the-inevitable-minor-fires and @zombimanos for your recommendations throughout the year. I also look forward to hearing new music from you guys.

Hunter’s Choice
Who: Hunter Clarington & Frannie Fabray When: August 12, 2021 Where: Frannie’s Apartment What: Hunter considers what’s next for him now he’s graduated and has a proposition for Frannie.
Hunter’s Choice
Hunter had been lucky to be able to keep his apartment after graduation but the contract was coming to an end in just over a week and then he’d be forced to go home. Despite his father’s wishes, Hunter hadn’t signed up to join the army yet so it appeared as though going back to Canada would be his only option.
The wishes of Clarington Senior were more accurately demands in the form of daily phone calls or emails from Mr C’s “friends” in the US armed forces less than gently trying to persuade Hunter to join whatever training program they could pluck out of thin air for the son of a respected officer. Of course, none of this communication came directly from Mr C though as that would require him to give up his time to be part of his children’s lives, he could simply direct their paths from afar and continue to be hands on as little as possible.
Between spending time with Frannie, Ollie and Benji whenever the latter wasn’t with his new boyfriend, and working with the Eagle Scouts program mentoring the young men aiming to achieve the highest award of the Boy Scouts, the summer had flown by in a blur of joy and excitement with his family which was barely keeping his fears for the coming fall at bay.
Every time those fears threatened to overwhelm Hunter he’d go to the gym and swim lap after lap never stopping long enough to brake his concentration from his sights set on the spot on the wall at the other end of the pool and he’d only leave the water when he was in pain from either burning lungs or burning muscles from the effort he’d exerted.
The 20th was fast approaching and Hunter needed to have a plan in place for the next step in his life, he couldn’t put this off any longer. He’d actually slept in his own bed in his own apartment the night before so thankfully he wasn’t disturbing Frannie and Ollie with his pacing, which he’d been doing for at least two hours now as he twisted the box in his hand between his fingers deftly as one might do with a pen. This was Hunters’ chance to change his trajectory and make his life his own and not live in his father’s shadow.
Taking a deep breath Hunter walked up to Frannie’s apartment and by-passed knocking on the door and simply walking in. thinking on it hunter couldn’t even remember the last time he had knocked and waited for Frannie’s response. That apartment was more like grand central station these days what with Hunter coming and going as he pleased to spend time with Ollie, Sam and Nikko popping up whenever they wanted, and then Benji and Mason appearing out of thin air at all hours of the day or night. Hunter of a year ago would have laughed if someone had said this was going to be his life, and yet he wouldn’t change it for the world.
“Hey babe,” Hunter called closing the door behind himself, feeling relaxed as soon as he was on the other side. “I wanted to talk to you about something.” He tugged nervously at his button up, smoothing down the bottom hem over top of his dark wash jeans, hoping Ollie wasn’t currently a sticky mess and ruin the white shirt. Hunt scolded himself momentarily for bothering to wear white in the vicinity of their son but he wanted to look good today.
“You know it’s been embarrassingly obvious that I’ve had no idea what to do after graduation after you managed to talk me out of being my father’s carbon copy and I need to thank you for that somehow because I found something perfect for me, at least the next year. The swim team is looking for a coach for the next academic year. Ours is taking off and moving to New Zealand to coach an Olympic hopeful and I couldn’t pass up what seemed like a perfect opportunity. Yesterday I found out I got the job. So I’m staying here. I’ll be able to rent a home over at the on campus staff housing association so if you want, you and Ollie could live there with me?”
Hunter had never spoken a sentence so quickly in all his life. He wasn’t the type of person to anxiously jabber on about nothing, he was brought up to be clear and concise but it was a big ask to propose such a thing to Frannie, to someone he felt so many things he’d never felt before. Frannie’s answer would be truly life changing for them all and he was about five seconds from starting to recall every single one of the Jewish Hebrew prayers Ben had taught him for luck.
Frannie's Response
Frannie had been pulling all her classic moves to avoid talking about what was actually bothering her. Well, what had be bothering her for ages... but only now was back to the front of her mind since talking to Benji. It was ironic, really, that one of the people she was most concerned about in this whole situation was Benji, and now he was encouraging her to talk to Hunter about whatever was "weird."
And despite what Sam kept thinking, the weirdness was not from some kind of unrequited love between herself and Hunter... but Sam had gotten into her head about what living with Hunter could mean. For a while, the thought had been circling her brain to tell Hunter that he should just move in with herself and Ollie when the lease was up now that he was no longer a student. She'd just figured that would be easier for everyone, right? And she had a spare room. Nothing had to really change, right?
But with Benji living with her as of recent until the leases opened up for him to get his own place, the idea fell to the back of her brain. It would be weird to have him here and Hunter trying to move in too, or at least that's what she told herself.
The door opened and she didn't even look over, just started talking. "I got more juice boxes. Also, string cheese, animal crackers, and some more p.b. and j for sandwiches, s-" She stopped speaking when she realized it was Hunter and turned her head quickly. "Oh shit, sorry. I thought you were Benji. Hey," she smiled before turning her attention back to the laundry she was folding, honestly unsure of what articles of clothing belonged to who. "What's up?"
She nodded as she listened to him speak, glancing over every few seconds so he would know she was paying attention. She shook her head a little, her cheeks feeling a bit warmer, when he credited her with changing his mind- which seemed very unbelievable to her. But she stopped folding and turned to look at him with wide eyes when she heard his job opportunity. "Hunt! That's amazing, what the hell! You're going to be am- wait, what did you say?" She blinked, dropping the still unfolded shirt back into the basket and running her hand over her hair. "You want us to live with you? I-" She stammered a bit, letting out a small laugh. "That's- I mean, you... I was going to ask you that…"
Hunter’s Proposition
“Good to know my brother is still actually showing up here, I swear he’s at the Smythe’s more than anyone else.” Hunter laughed, “Not that I blame him after Chris…” He huffed, grabbing down the bottle of bourbon he had hidden at the back of the highest cupboard in Frannie’s kitchen and pouring a couple of ounces into a glass to calm his nerves. Hunter still felt ill-will towards Chris after he found out Ben had needed to break up with his childhood crush, making Hunter more on edge than ever about Ben entering a new relationship because clearly people felt like they could treat the youngest Clarington like garbage and Hunter wasn’t going to stand by and let that happen again.
Watching Frannie stumble a little as he continued to talk always amused Hunter. He was the type of person that had no qualms continuing to talk without letting people respond, so seeing Frannie go from joy about his job announcement to what appeared to be nerves or surprise in reaction to his invite made him chuckle but only because he found it adorable and endearing.
However, the most interesting part of Frannie’s response was she took had been getting ready to ask him the same question. “Ask me to live here? As convenient as that sounds I’m ready to stop sharing a bedroom with my son, and little brother when he feels like spending the night with his ‘Mom’.” He grinned, in the back of his mind thinking about how this could be an opportunity to get into her bed… But the little voice of restraint in his mind, which oddly enough had the voice of the Smythe’s sister, told him to take it slow.
“We can get a three bedroom over in the staff complex, they have some renovated town houses that would be perfect for the three of us so if you have exams or cases to study for I can keep Ollie occupied in a different part of the house.” Hunter explained, wandering over and picking up the discarded shirt and smiling, it was one of his that he’d often pull on first thing after waking up to bathe or change Ollie before he showered and got ready for the day himself.
“So what do you say? Think you can live that far from Jolly Green and little Prescott?” Hunter give his best sensual persuasive smile, practically batting his eyelashes.

All About You: Part 3
Previous Chapter | Next Chapter
First story in the Very Long Distance series.
Pairing: Christopher Pike x OC
Rating: Mature
Word Count: 1k
Summary: After a difficult mission Chris needs a little TLC. Where it is all about and for him. To get out of his head and just feel.
ooooo
From the kitchen she calls out “Would you like a drink?”
“Yes, please.” Chris catalogs his surroundings while he waits, a necessary precaution when fighting or exploring that is now so ingrained the habit is automatic in spite of the setting or circumstance.
The building is old, fronting on a quiet Paris street and the apartment occupies half of the top floor. The room he is standing in is simple and eclectic yet feminine, with soft white walls and furnished with a plush light grey velvet couch and two dark buttery soft armchairs. Between is a large medium brown coffee table littered with books, children’s games, and the little knick-knacks everyone accumulates, which, he assumes, hold special meaning. A cream and brown Moroccan rug covers the wooden floor anchoring the seating area. Sheer curtains cover the floor to ceiling windows. Soft color here and there – vases of fresh flowers, throws, art – accent the neutral scheme. He notices the far wall, most likely separating the living area from the bedroom, is lined with overflowing bookshelves. In front is a long table underneath an antique chandelier, one that is plain rather than ornate. The table is littered with PADDs and other items, and he surmises it is used as a work area. The effect is relaxed and inviting, a lived-in space rather than one that is meticulously decorated.
Emerging from the kitchen, she hands him a tray with a teapot and two cups. “I haven’t had a chance to pick up since my nieces visited,” she explains while clearing a space on the coffee table for the tray and gesturing to the couch in a non-verbal invitation to sit.
He sits, after she does.
“Why the amused look?” He asks.
Because I can’t remember the last time a man waited for me to sit before he did. “Not amused, charmed.”
She hands him a cup and suddenly feeling unsure hurriedly explains, “At the party the drink you were nursing didn’t appear to your liking. I thought something non-alcoholic might be more palatable. It’s jasmine tea.”
Chris found the tea’s flowery aroma and delicate taste satisfying, and sensual. “Yes, this is better,” he remarks before shaking his head and continuing the admonishment he began in the park, his tone stern. “You should always have a coat with you.” A pause. “Why do you find that amusing?” Her laughter sounds like music.
“Oh …” she says between chuckles, “You were a boy scout, weren’t you? Always be prepared and all of that.”
“Eagle scout,” he corrects with a mock frown, “not that the distinction is important. Nor is being prepared a bad thing.”
“That’s perfect by the way. Your pilot’s … what do you call it … handle … nickname?”
“Call sign.”
“OK … your call sign is now … eagle scout. At least to me.”
“You don’t even know if I can fly anything.” Chris mutters. And as hoped, his retort elicits the same slight head tilt and impish smile from earlier in the evening, the one which lights up her eyes.
“True. But if I am the pretend wingman, that makes you the pretend pilot.”
“We seem to have drifted off topic. Which was the importance of keeping warm on chilly spring nights.”
“Hmmm. Aversion to cold. No accent. You’re a southern California boy, aren’t you?”
“Mojave specifically. I fail to understand how where I am from is relevant in this conversation.”
His statement elicits another merry laugh. “Spend a couple of winters acclimating in snowy, frigid Boston and you will.” Recalling his kindness earlier in the evening to a young girl who was flustered and upset, she adds, her tone soft, "I like the way you take care of those around you, even strangers.”
They lapsed into silence, both feeling comfortable and safe with the other. A silence that is neither awkward nor uneasy, rather one where words are superfluous.
Chris takes her teacup and places it on the tray with his own. He stands and holds out his hand. “I should go soon. But before I do, one dance. We missed that at the party.”
Unmoving, hesitant, her own hands now tightly clasped she responds, “Not required on a pretend date, which is fortunate for you. I’m not very good at dancing.”
He untangles her hands and, taking both, gently pulls her up, while murmuring in her ear “I no longer care to think of this as a pretend date.”
“But …”
He shakes his head almost imperceptibly. “I want to feel you in my arms … to hold you … even if it’s just for a few minutes. May I?”
She nods. The music he selects is quiet and slow, faintly jazzy. After a few stops and starts and clumsy stances, they find a rhythm and move smoothly together. As she gains confidence her body relaxes into his. He leans down and she reaches up for a gentle kiss. Neither notice when the music ends. Instead after smoothing his hair back, she lays her head against his chest and they continue swaying.
A few minutes later Chris stops and pulls away. Sensing they both need a moment to regroup, she says, “Uh … I … I should change,” walking out of the room before he can respond.
Lost in his own thoughts he doesn’t notice when she returns until he hears, “I’m sorry but would you help? The zipper is stuck.” She presents her back as she asks, holding her now loose hair up and away from the neckline.
“Ah … yeah … sure …” Chris tries to tug the zipper down, but it doesn’t budge. It resists a second attempt. And another more forceful one. He pulls the top edges of the dress together with his other hand intending to realign the stubborn fastener. As he does his fingers brush against her neck and her breath hitches ever so slightly.
After finagling, the zipper is righted, and it moves. He gives into the temptation to trace a line down her spine. She arches her back, and her hair falls as she reaches to prevent the dress from slipping down. Moving her hair to the side he kisses the now bare shoulder and wraps an arm around her waist, nudging them closer together.
Both start to speak at once, “I … we …”
Needing to walk things back, Chris abruptly separates and moves toward the couch. Picking up the tray he says, “I’ll take this to the kitchen.”
She retreats back to the bedroom.

can i just talk abt the christiansen kiddos and when their like high school life for a moment pls.
like high school age chris is still very introverted and doesn’t hang out with a lot of ppl. but he’s actually decently well known and liked throughout school bc of his family’s involvement in the community and all that. he quit boy scouts in middle school bc he knew that’s just what his dad wanted him to do and he didn’t. in general i think he’s got a lot of issues with joseph and falls much more into a depressive state in high school and does a lot of acting out by way of just like challenging a lot of whatever joseph says. probably quits soccer in like sophomore year too just bc he’s not really feeling much. i also feel like he’s probably dealing w/his own internal sexuality crisis so he’s dealin with a lot.
the twins def r more like popular mean kids at school. but they also keep to themselves a lot. they’re not like stereotypical mean bullies but more being mean to the bullies and intimidating as hell, but respected enough for that shit that people like them. ya know what I mean? also they have hot/pretty people privilege for sure.
christian is like crazy good at tennis and has been doing it since elementary school and mostly focuses a lot of his time and energy into doing that. he also throws himself into school work and studying a lot. just trying to do what he can to go to a good school and to potentially get noticed by someone to take him on to do tennis ya know. so he really burns himself out A LOT trying to be absolutely perfect. he got close to getting Eagle Scout but things just built up he couldn’t focus on that. I think he also tries dating a lot but with how busy he is it’s hard to manage everything and he just ends up not treating those girls the best always.
Christie ends up following a route that was much more like what happened to Mary in high school, which was way more concerned about having fun and social status than actual school work. She’s actually very smart and doesn’t have to try too hard to do well in classic but she still skimps out on school work. Often times she will sneak out to go out to parties. just overall gets into more trouble than either of her siblings. she did softball in middle school but then moved on to volleyball in high school, so she also spends a lot of time focusing on that rather than homework and classes.
crish is able to fall under the radar a lot more and just doesn’t really have many friends in high school. he actually gets really into Boy Scouts and is able to get his Eagle Scout early. In high school he also does track for a bit, but most of the time he likes doing a lot more creative work with his hands like pottery and sculpture stuff. He get a little reclusive as he doesn’t know how to deal with a lot of his issues of being lonely and not having people at home to talk to. but he ends up spending a lot of his free time just outdoors when he can, hiking and exploring.

“The XFL is a thing. Should you care about it?”
Joey
February 2nd, 2020
Another winter, another money mark attempt to figure out winter football.
The NFL has wrapped up another successful season and now it's Vince McMahon's turn to try once more with a brand new football league. In 2019, the son of his friend Dick Ebersole tried with the AAF which fell apart before the season finale could even take place. Vince McMahon seems more prepared than Charlie Ebersole and his backers, especially when you consider that the XFL apparently has long term financial backing place to absorb what figures to be some money losing seasons. The XFL's rule set which features things like a revamped overtime, a double forward pass concept, a continuously running game clock and a variety of different special teams related rules designed to entice an improved pace of play. Is the XFL going to revolutionize the NFL? Probably not. Will it provide some concepts that inevitably get stolen? I'm going with a pretty solid "oh yeah absolutely." It's live sports and chances are if you're reading this you know that the SportsSoundoff is all about live sports and activities that are able to cosplay as sports (axe throwing and chainsaw-ing come to mind).
If you're looking for more football to take in then the XFL figures to give you that and with readily-ish available-ish games across FS1/2, Fox, ABC and ESPN/2 platforms. Long story short, games will be out there for ya if you want to spell some time between the NBA's second half kicking off and the start of baseball and college basketball's tournament run. With a neat and tidy eight teams across a variety of markets, I'd like to go team by team and detail why you should try your hardest to give each team the benefit of your time. Some teams figure to be easy and some teams figure to be impossible BUT I've got free time and I gotta do something, right?
The Dallas Desperados The most intriguing coaching staff in the entire league
Let's start from the obvious; if Bob Stoops truly wanted to, he could be coaching in the NCAA right now. This is a guy who left Oklahoma as an insanely successful well liked legacy coach who won a national title and 10 conference championships. Bob Stoops took Oklahoma football to a level not seen since the Barry Switzer run and is clearly one of the greatest coaching minds of his era. Health and perhaps a general all around malaise for football led to Stoops stepping down but when you look around the number of college teams divided by the number of quality of minds currently available for head coaching jobs, there's zero doubt Stoops could've been the guy at any school he wanted to over the past two years. Hell, I would NOT be surprised if Stoops would've been on the radar of NFL teams if he did an Urban Meyer-esque TV gig as opposed to just falling off the face of the Earth and living life in the shadows. Instead he re-emerges in the XFL as the GM and head coach of the Dallas Desperados. Stoops admittedly took this gig because of its proximity to his recruiting trails of the past and just general all around comfort with the area. Stoops was the prized announcement of the XFL, the first coach they revealed and put in the biggest football media market of the entire XFL league. Long story short? Bob Stoops was a rare coup for the XFL and he's being advertised and promoted as such. So much so in fact that when Stoops stopped appearing in XFL promotional material for a short spell, there were rumors that the XFL was going to lose the only drawing card it had with Stoops maybe making a move all the way up to the NFL for the Cowboys head coaching gig. The fact the XFL has Stoops gives it something the AAF never had; a familiar well liked face who isn't tired or old hat; the two knocks that basically hurt the AAF when Steve Spurrier was limping around on the sidelines for the Orlando Apollos.
The intrigue goes beyond JUST Bob Stoops as the Bob Stoops coaching staff is genuinely pretty ridiculous. If you love the Lincoln Riley and Mike Leach style offenses then you know of the name of Hal Mumme. Mumme is the father of most of the modern air raid offenses you see today, the likes of which that get mediocre-y college coaches like Kliff Kingsbury head coaching gigs in the NFL. Mumme is a bit of a college coaching legend with concepts that have bled into the highest levels of football. Stoops will be the offensive coordinator for Stoops' offense and with a few years away from the coaching circuit, I'm intrigued to see if Mumme has anything new left to offer. Defensively, Chris Woods and Jim Jeffcoat have long ties to Bob Stoops or Hal Mumme. The offense has a mastermind, the defense has a glut of former defensive coordinators and there's a damn good chance that Bob Stoops could turn a solid run in the XFL into a head coaching job elsewhere. Just keep an eye on the Desperados coaching staff as a potential breeding ground for coaches into the next level.
DC Defenders Name defensive talent = ???
It seems like the XFL is going to make it a lot harder for defenses to really play a meaningful part in the games with rules clearly designed to go for more of a high paced scoring first and foremost brand of play. That said, the DC Defenders do have some defensive talent to keep an eye on. They've got a name defensive line with guys like former Giants starter Jay Bromley, USC's Kenny Bigelow, Washington Huskie Elijah Qualls and a linebacking core with Arizona undersized legend Scooby Wright, former Atlanta Falcons player Jonathan Massaquoi and former Bills player and early retiree from football AJ Tarpley. In the secondary is where things really have "could play in the NFL potential" with former draft picks Jalen Myrick and Bradley Sylve and former starters Shamarko Thomas and Matt Elam at the safety spots. Most of the attention will be on former National Championship winner Cardale Jones at the QB spot with name weapons like Malachai Dupree and Rashad Ross but in truth, I'm curious to see if their defensive talents can find their way back into the NFL.
Houston Roughnecks Actual NFL name talent
Soooo yeah, let's take a second to talk about the Houston Roughnecks. There's a WEALTH of NFL level talent on here, if not in actual talent but in name value. We can start at the QB spot where the Roughnecks at the very least boast an interesting "What if?" scenario. Going into the 2016 NFL Draft, a lot of teams needed QBs and the draft boasted some really interesting ones. The top two were pretty much locked in (Carson Wentz and Jared Goff depending upon your preference) and Paxton Lynch seemed like a solid lock as the #3 QB. After that? Free for all! The likes of Cardale Jones, Dak Prescott, Jeff Driskel, Connor Cook, Nat Sudfield and Christian Hackenberg were all fighting for spots to try and eek themselves into that next tier. There was a belief of sorts that Cook was the leader in that clubhouse but concerns about his personality and how teammates viewed him at Michigan State dogged him all the way down to the 4th round. The Cowboys were going to take Cook (who they had as a late 2nd round pick on their draft board) but he got snagged up as the Raiders as a developmental QB behind Derek Carr. The Cowboys, not exactly heartbroken but not exactly thrilled, moved to taking Charles Tapper out of Oklahoma and then with their comp pick (thanks Eagles! Thanks DeMarco Murray!) picked Dak Prescott at the behest of their coaching staff, bucking scouts who had him behind Jeff Driskel. Dak Prescott will likely earn anywhere from 30 to 40 million next year and Cook is trying to carve out his path in the XFL after failed stints in Oakland, Cincinnati and Detroit. It's a fun "What If?" scenario to toss around while Cook can perhaps reset his career in the XFL.
Beyond Connor Cook? Houston boasts a kicker in Sergio Castillo who as an all star in 2019 and boasts an NFL quality leg potentially. Kickers come and go in the NFL and if Castillo is good then he probably has a chance to pop up somewhere. RB De'Angelo Henderson was a 7th round pick who has bounced around the NFL and figures to probably get similar looks as a 3rd round COP back somewhere if he's good in the league. Cam Phillips and Kahlil Lewis are former NFL camp bodies while Sammie Coates played in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers. SS Marqueston Huff played in the NFL for a variety of teams and has a pedigree as a former 4th round pick. DL Kony Ealy, Gabe Wright and Walter Palmore could probably fill out the back end of an NFL defensive line rotation right now. There's some actual NFL talent lurking in these waters, even if most of it is probably training camp filler variety. Those guys still have merit!
LA Wildcats The Josh Johnson Situation
So let's chit chat a spell about this. Josh Johnson is one of those guys that seems to pop up once a year on an NFL roster. He's been in the league since the dying days of the Gruden Era in Tampa Bay, a former fifth round pick who carved out a career as a somewhat competent-ish back up. He bounced around, played in the United Football League (consider THAT one) and seemed set to flame out. When the Redskins brought Josh Johnson in in 2018 after injuries to Alex Smith and Colt McCoy, Johnson stepped into the starting role and actually played pretty well! Not well enough to get brought back but well enough to earn another shot in the NFL as a back up for the Detroit Lions. Johnson was let go and continued his playing days by adding onto the XFL. I think Josh Johnson is the only dude to play in all three short term gimmick leagues (the UFL, AAF and XFL) but that's not where our story ends. Injuries to Jeff Driskel and Matt Stafford opened the door to play the NFL again when the Lions came calling. Surprisingly the XFL refused to follow the AAF's lead and kept Johnson to his XFL deal, forcing him to pass on a Lions opportunity. Josh Johnson basically has to be the best QB in the league to justify the XFL's decision to force him to stay in the league. Otherwise they'll probably be looked at unfavorably by future players for robbing a guy of an NFL opportunity. Also keep an eye on Nelson Spruce to be a big third down guy who racks up 1st downs.
New York Guardians ???
So I've looked over the roster a bunch, taken a gander at the coaching staff and honestly? I mean I don't have anything. This team on paper is pretty boring with no real flashy star name value and a head coach and offensive coordinator in Kevin Gilbride who had his best years some fifteen years ago if not longer. I suppose there may be some interest in seeing former AAF names like Jamar Summers and Luis Perez do stuff? This team is boring but boring teams can win games and boring games can win championships. Just don't expect the Guardians on paper to be something you'll feel compelled to go out of your way to see. In a way the Guardians match up pretty well with Vince McMahon's current WWE product; a severe lack of storylines and star power that compel and force you to go out of your way to tune in on a weekly basis.
St. Louis Battlehawks Football is BACK in St. Louis!
The Rams left St. Louis for LA in 2016 and to be entirely honest, I'm not sure if it worked out any well for the NFL. Surely the Rams bring in more money and notoriety in theory but it sure feels like the Rams have not exactly caught on with the locals in LA who are clearly baseball fans during the summer/fall and basketball fans every other time else. The Rams boast a tremendous team and watching a city like Kansas City enjoying its first Super Bowl win (in the great state of Missouri or Kansas or Kansourri) has me wondering how much more fun the NFL would be if the Greatest Show On Turf stayed in St. Louis as opposed to venturing out west and had kept up the tradition of having two teams playing in a rather "small" market. The fans of St. Louis will get to show how much they support football when the Battlehawks take flight (Ugh) in a few days. The Battlehawks have an intriguing roster with plenty of Mizzou names on it like WRs L'Damian Washington and former TE turned WR Markus Lucas. They also have swagmaster Marquette King trying to rebuild his NFL case after his falling out in Oakland. To add to the madness, the Battlehawks boast the most QBs on any of the 52 man rosters in the XFL and are led by Ole Miss QB legend Jordan Ta'amu who is coming off a failed stint in the NFL. I still really like Ta'amu and think he's got developmental upside for what it's worth but that's neither here nor there.
Seattle Dragons Holy shit Jim Zorn is still around?
The Redskins have a rather....interesting history in the modern era. Outside of a few brief periods of success from the likes of Joe Gibbs and Mike Shanahan, the Redskins head coaching history is rather no bueno. Among those bodies lost to the annals of history you have Jim Zorn. Zorn was a bit of a QB whisperer for the likes of Mike Holmgren and Dennis Erickson before surprising folks by making a massive leap from QB coach to head coach for the Washington Redskins in a stunning move. Zorn's move went...about as well as you'd expect. Jim Zorn became the latest victim of Redskins incompetence and then sort of just disappeared. He coached QBs for a bit after getting fired and then became the NFL equivalent of a ghost. Well Jim Zorn's back and back in Seattle where he led Matt Hasselbeck to some insane-o Seahawks records. The Dragons roster overall isn't exactly must see as it's mostly AAF leftovers with the occasional 2019 UDFA but at the very least seeing if Jim Zorn can wash off the Redskins stench some 10+ years later might be a bit of fun.
Tampa Bay Vipers A Florida all star team
The Vipers have the world's most name recognizable pseudo all star squad in the entire XFL. With former Bears head coach Marc Trestman at the helm, the Vipers boast a wide array of talents from various schools in the state of Florida. Miami Hurricanes WR Stacy Coley, Florida OL Martez Ivey and TE DeAndre Goolsby, South Florida QB legend Quinton Flowers will be trying his hand at RB as well as FSU RB Jacques Patrick and DB DeMarcus McFadden. That doesn't even begin to cover the number of Central Florida, South Florida and FAU players on this team as well. Also Aaron Murray is here and it seems like people are still going to try and make him into a thing after being a 4th round pick back in 2015.
