Ulysses and Dicentra agreed to meet Hellebore further inland, past the hills and into the shelter of the woods hugging the western edge of the Tyodan River. Uly wasn’t naïve—there were countless crimelords meeting with devils in their taverns as they made the trip—but she and Di weren’t keen on that until they had more of a foothold with the Rosenthal’s.

The location was a cheery dell on a sunny day, a playful nip in the air. It had no impact on Uly’s temperament. Her heart took up too much space in her chest and a cloud of angst followed her. It wasn’t fear, exactly—she wanted to make a decent impression on her lover’s dad. Di squeezed her hand every so often as if to say ‘I’m here.’

They arrived first—or so Uly thought. From the bower of the trees, Hellebore manifested out of nothing. The shadows clung to him as he emerged, seeming to form into his wings.

He wasn’t disguised, and the mirror failed to capture even a pinch of his magnitude. He was gigantic, for a start—at least two heads taller than Di, who already had a handful of inches on Ulysses. His velvety, feathered wings climbed further still, even tucked against his back. They weren’t strictly black, but the colour of nightshade berries. Uly had wondered why he wasn’t fully armoured and understood now—his skin looked tough enough to stop any average blade. 

She hadn’t seen his lower half, either. He had a tail like a second whip and his muscled legs ended in hooves.

“Dad!” Di exclaimed with joy. Hellebore didn’t look at her, eyes fixed on Ulysses, unblinking. He stalked towards them, and despite his size, his steps were light and fast. It reminded Ulysses of a feline. A predator.

Headed straight for her.

Uly straightened even as instinct begged her to flee. The dell was suddenly crowded, both its sides pushing in on them, creating a narrow, pitched tunnel for him to charge at her. She took a single step back as he arrived, and it was all she could manage before he seized her by the throat and swept her off the ground.

“Dad!” Di cried again, this time in shock. Uly’s legs paddled wildly in the air and they scrabbled at his hands, too-hot, too-tight. He drew her in to be eye to eye with him, assessing her. His horns could have gored them.

“Ulysses, is it?” he droned. “The only magic I can smell on you is from the Feywild; it’s not even your own. You’re the sort of human making deals with us for magic because you can’t contrive it yourself.”

His words were as punishing as his grip. Ulysses realized with a suffocating weight that Dicentra barely scratched the surface on Hell. Ulysses had never truly understood the danger until then.

Hellebore’s crush tightened, enough that her vision spotted and consciousness began to slope away from her.

Dicentra hung off him, digging her claws into his bicep. Her voice sounded like it fought its way through water: “Dad, let go—you shame me, your shame yourself—”

Hellebore dropped them without moving his arm. Uly plummeted like a sack of rocks and rolled to the bottom of the dell, coughing and gasping. Stars blotted their sight, and gods, how could air taste so sweet but burn so much—

Dicentra crouched beside them and wrapped an arm and wing around her, part cradling her and part shielding her from Hellebore.

“I should’ve made you swear not to hurt them,” Dicentra hissed.

“They’re beneath you,” Hellebore said. “You could have anyone, and this is who you choose?” His rejection might as well have been a foot on Uly’s back, digging them further into the mud.

“Yes,” Dicentra snapped. “Isn’t that the point? Shouldn’t that say plenty about Ulysses? You couldn’t possibly understand them without getting to know them first.”

“I don’t need to to know they’re not worth your attention.”

Uly surprised herself when her head cleared—her pain hardened into resolve. She stared up. “You don’t need to like me.” Her voice came out raw; her throat would bruise later. “But you don’t have to to accept my service to you.”

Hellebore tilted his head. Dicentra clutched Uly closer to her side, frowning up at him.

“Not having magic doesn’t mean I’m not resourceful,” Uly pressed. “It doesn’t mean I don’t understand how it works, or don’t know how to wield a sword. You adopted Dicentra for a reason—aren’t you more interested in someone’s potential than what they’re worth now?”

Hellebore shifted his weight, jaw moving as he worked his teeth. Eventually he gusted a sigh and the dell seemed to release a breath in time with him.

“I don’t like that you claim to understand my reason for adopting Dicentra,” he said, “but you have a point. Perhaps I was too swift to judge. You’ll have to forgive me; I’m protective of her.”

He offered a hand. Ulysses reached for it, tentatively, but Dicentra plucked her to her feet before they could connect.

He shot Dicentra a minute glance, then turned on his heel and, languidly, climbed the dell back to its summit. “I do have work that needs to be done. Let’s discuss business.”

“What is the main cast of Dirty South’s favorite alcoholic beverages?”

Most of them are admittedly stereotypical.

Nico will drink just about anything, but he prefers whiskey. He drinks mainly bottom shelf mixed in sweet tea.

Swamp also prefers whiskey, but he tends to have a bit of “taste” to him and prefers middle shelf, straight.

Rufus doesn’t drink, as it agitates his schizophrenia symptoms.

Crowe doesn’t drink much anymore, as he used to have a problem, but when he does drink he’ll have a beer, sometimes whiskey & tea with Nico.

Ganymede mostly drinks beer. He rarely drinks liquor, as he can get belligerent on it.

Lucky doesn’t drink a lot, and he has no preference, he’ll drink what’s given to him. He prefers to smoke, though.

 Tuscon will drink anything but prefers tequila.

Pewter likes overproof rums, things that are strong.

Moonpie likes wine, but will drink whatever is bought for him.

 Cletus and Roy like hard seltzers, but rarely drink.

Tros loves a good homemade brandy or moonshine.

Duke will drink anything. Anything. He prefers everclear, though, or any 151 proof. 

Ulysses likes beer and Irish whiskey.

Nero mainly drinks cocktails.

Rodney likes Irish too, sometimes scotch.

Adel likes dark rums.

Colt likes top shelf "bourbons", those rare limited release items. He drinks them with whiskey rocks, straight.

Ruger likes New Jersey Turnpikes off the drink mats at the bar.

Merle likes beers too, especially the $1 and $2 beers at the bar.

currently watching: I haven’t watched a show in ages but the last things I did watch (last year now) were the sandman and a couple of mirrors.

currently obsessed with: lots but especially six of crows, good omens and the da vinci code books. various off-broadway musicals and plays, in particular heathers, les misérables, cabaret, the ruffian on the stair and the last days of judas iscariot. different types of art, especially colourful whimsical artists like hiro kamigaki, miyazaki obviously, patrick mchale and ulysse malassagne. and I’m also obsessed with the cynical punk/no wave art scene in mid-1970s downtown new york. also I love performing, (I do acro, dance, acting and aerial) and I’m super interested in cinematography, film making and stage production. and also art history.

Prompt 17: One Could Hope

Prompt 17: Free Write  - FFXIV Write 2023 Characters:  Lord Armand de Courcelle, mentions of the children.

Morning was the only quiet time the father of a house of ten children knew.  Armand took advantage of this fact.  Dawn crept in and a servant quietly snuck into his room to drag the heavy drapes open.  Sunlight spilled across his bed, the gentle light pulling him from his reveries and into the waking world once more.  

A groan slid from his lips as he turned over onto his back.  An arm drifted across his pillow while the sheets twisted around his hips.  After nearly seventy years of waking, it wasn’t getting any easier.  His bones ached in the morning when before it had only been his left leg and arm, where the injuries from the war had been severe enough to send him home for good.  Back into the arms of his overjoyed wife expecting their second.  

In hindsight he was grateful now that life had seen fit to send him home.  His father died fighting the dragons and left him inheriting young, but not before he had arranged his marriage to a girl from House Dzamael.  Fortune smiled upon him to bless him with a wife he’d come to love very much.  She’d gifted him with ten fine children and given her life bringing the last one into the world.  Armand was content he could spend the last years of her life at her side, raising their brood.

A throat cleared nearby.  “My Lord.”  The servant  intoned.  Armand briefly had to wonder if they trained to sound that way.  “Shall I ring for breakfast to be brought here today?”

“No,”  He rolled his head to peer into the light, eyes squinting.  The silhouette of the servant was all he could make out of them.  “In the study, please.  And draw me a bath first.”  

Armand closed his eyes and listened as the servant left, their steps soft and the door eased closed.  If he thought he could get away with lying in bed all day, he may have tried that today.  His feet found the floor and his hands found his hair, raking through the long loose locks.  Black as the night and now salted liberally with grey and white strands.  

He had aged well, or so he thought.  The few lines on his face were happy ones, crows feet at the corners of his eyes and the gentle curves to either side of his lips marking a man with plenty of reason to smile over the years.  A few worry lines creased his brow but they weren’t as deep as the others.  His scars had faded to pale lines in his flesh, jagged and raised though the ones on his leg were.  Eighteen years later and the scar on his heart had also faded.  He had told his children last night that he was considering finding a companion of his own.

Their responses had been supportive.  A brief huff of laughter sounded at the memory.  Ulysses had always been a strange child, but the chosen phrasing over the situation had stunned Armand.  Having his halls plumbed?  The very images that brought to mind stained Armand’s face anew with crimson.  

In all his long years, he’d only ever been with Adorinna.  They married young, but his military career had kept him away from her and her bed for some time.  Like Dauvaunt, Armand had been a late bloomer.  The confusion over desire and the focus of it held him hostage from taking action.  He found women attractive and knew he could learn to love them as his past had proved, but his fantasies had always revolved around men.

And now he was free to explore those desires.  If he could find anyone interested in a near seventy year old, Ishgardian Viscount with as many children as one had fingers.  Armand groaned again and shoved himself out of his bed.  At least he didn’t suffer from grand delusions on the matter.  His children’s trials in love were all the dashing of hopes he needed. Yet he’d given them leave to find him appropriate matches.  Maybe looking on his behalf would result in them finding their own desires met.

“Your bath is ready, My Lord.”  The servant called from the adjoining room.

“Ah, thank you.”  Armand replied, pulling on his house robe.

The morning and all its quiet glory awaited him.
