Wednesday, March 27: Beyond Twilight, "Godless and Wicked"
For a good long while, Jørn Lande seemed to take whatever gig came his way, but his one record with Beyond Twilight was arguably a bit more notable because it ultimately played like a dress rehearsal for the slightly prog-inflected power metal of Masterplan.  “Godless and Wicked” was a bit more progressive and dramatic than what Lande cooked up with Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch, and the vocals had much more bite to them- this was actually one of Lande’s more aggressive performances.  The song packed a lot into its short runtime, and for 2001 was a fairly adventurous balance of prog, symphonic and crunchy power metal, weaving elements of the former into what was a rather heavy foundation.  And while the ad hoc nature of their lineups kept Beyond Twilight from coming into its own as a functioning band, “Godless and Wicked” was a sterling example of what they could do when the pieces fell into place.

An Intro Guide to Danish Death Metal
Tumblr media
Nick Mkhl of Hessian Firm (@hessianfirm) presents an introductory guide to Danish death metal, looking back on six classic albums that he defines as essential listening.
While the Danish scene was very small in comparison to their neighbours there are still a few very worthy albums to own from that scene. Though for the most part it is extremely influenced by the American scene and to a lesser extent the scenes of neighbouring countries There is however a distinctly Danish sound that can be heard in the bands presented below. Sonically it can be described as a combination of Finnish death metal styled melodies in the vein of bands like Demilich and Adramelech played over crushing brutal death metal rhythms.

"THE BEAUTY OF BLACK METAL IN THE EIGHTIES IS THAT IT WASN'T ONE SOUND."
"The beauty of black metal in the eighties is that it wasn't one sound. At all. MERCYFUL FATE was rather melodic, but with occult lyrics -- giving the band the certain extra that made them interesting for us more into the dark paths of life. I first heard "Evil" on a Metal Hammer sampler LP, and I instantly felt what I later would come to understand was the black metal feeling. The Danish group were rather well-played musicians, and, King Diamond's off-the-wall schizo theatrical voice set new creative standards. I especially recommend their second album "Don't Break the Oath" (1984)."
-- FENRIZ on MERCYFUL FATE's early "black metal feel," CD liner notes from "Fenriz Presents... The Best of Old-School Black Metal" (2004) on Peaceville Records

Tiny Bronze Portrait of Alexander the Great Found in Denmark
The miniature bronze portrait depicts Alexander the Great with his wavy hair and crown of ram horns.
Metal detectorists have unearthed a miniature bronze portrait of Alexander the Great on an island in Denmark.
Finn Ibsen and Lars Danielsen made the discovery while conducting survey work in a field outside Ringsted, a city on the Danish island of Zealand, and surrendered the artifacts to Museum West Zealand, Danish news outlet TV2 Øst reported.
The bronze fitting, known as a bracket, measures approximately 1 inch (2.7 centimeters) in diameter, is cast of bronze alloy and includes an engraved portrait of a wavy-haired man wearing a crown of twisted ram horns, according to a statement from Museum West Zealand.
Based on the imagery, archaeologists immediately knew they were looking at the face of Alexander the Great, the legendary leader of the ancient kingdom of Macedon whose empire stretched from the Balkans to modern-day Pakistan by the time he died at age 32.
The piece "has the typical attributes of Alexander the Great, such as his distinct, wavy hair and ram horns," Freerk Oldenburger, an archaeologist at Museum West Zealand. "The image is almost identical to another bracket portrait found years ago that contains the same stylized image."

That piece, also a metal bracket, was found by a different group of archaeologists in Jutland, Denmark. It was hidden among a stockpile of weapons and likely served as an "ornament worn on a silver shield mount — it was a way to show off," Oldenburger said.
"It's quite a remarkable piece," Oldenburger said. "When it showed up on my desk, I nearly fell out of my chair because it's almost the exact same portrait as the other, but this one is a little more coarse and is made of cast bronze and not gilded silver. The bronze alloy also contains a high lead content and was made using an alloy often found in [Roman] bronze statuettes. It's possible that a statuette was melted down to make this portrait."
While researchers remain unsure of the piece's function, they know that the fitting dates to around A.D. 200 and could have been worn as a "decorative disc for a shield" or as a bracket affixed to a sword belt, according to the statement.

A portrait of Caracalla, a Roman emperor who often emulated Alexander the Great. He is depicted with a shield containing a portrait of Alexander the Great.
"This was around the same time as Caracalla," a Roman emperor who reigned from A.D. 198 to 217, Oldenburger said. "We know that he was completely obsessed with Alexander the Great and was interested and inspired by him, since he was the greatest conqueror of that time period," he added.
In fact, Caracalla was so enamored of the Greek ruler that he often "dressed with the same style and believed he was Alexander the Great reincarnated," he said. "Caracalla is also the only emperor of his time to be depicted with a shield containing a portrait of Alexander the Great."

Friday, December 2: King Diamond, “Shrine”
R.I.P. Timi Hansen (1958-2019)
Plenty of metal bands released singles in the ‘80s, but most in the genre wisely focused on albums given the tremendously low odds of something like “No Presents for Christmas” getting played on the radio.  Because of that, compilations like The Dark Sides were actually pretty valuable for fans, as they rounded up all of those stray tracks that, while not always mountain-shaking, frequently had their moments.  And “Shrine,” as a B-side to “The Family Ghost”, was something of a minor gem from King Diamond’s golden age that spotlighted the power and chemistry of the Diamond/LaRocque/Denner/Hansen/Dee lineup. Everyone was at or near the top of their game, and it seemed like the primary reason “Shrine” was left off Abigail was that King’s lyrics didn’t fit the album’s concept.  That standalone nature gave it the benefit of not needing to be anything other than a top-flight ‘80s Euro metal banger, which was exactly what it was.
