Let’s tell a story where Petunia Dursley found a baby boy on her doorstep and hated his eyes—she hated them. She took him in and fed him and changed him and got him his shots, and she hated his eyes up until the day she looked at the boy and saw her nephew, not her sister’s shadow. When Harry was two and Vernon Dursley bought Dudley a toy car and Harry a fast food meal with a toy with parts he could choke on Petunia packed her things and got a divorce.

Molly tried her best. When Harry had told them, Arthur had asked excitedly, "is this a Muggle thing?" Hermione had hurried out a "no!" and a frantic history of gender diversity in the wizarding world.

"It's just that I'm a girl," Harry had said, and Arthur had nodded and asked her about how telephone booths worked. He would call her by the right pronouns until the day he died at the respectable old age of one hundred and thirty three, and he would make it seem easy.

But Molly had to try. Hermione explained things faster and higher-pitched every time Molly messed up a pronoun. Molly frowned and muttered and put extra potatoes on Harry's plate at breakfast. Harry slept in Ron's room, which didn't bother either of them but which made Hermione scowl.

Harry got boxes of sweets and warm hugs, as Molly chewed things over. For her fifteenth Christmas, the Weasley sweater she would receive would be a bright, friendly, terrible pink.

The next time Harry visited, Molly put her on Ginny's floor to sleep-- for some definition of sleep that involved Hermione hissing threats at three in the morning if Harry and Ginny didn't "shut up about Wronski feints, do you know what time it is."

imagine– we have this kid on the train, the first friend harry meets, with his corned beef sandwiches and smudged nose. ron is eleven years old and he wants gryffindor, because he’s a weasley and that’s what always happens. but it doesn’t happen.

what a way to redeem slytherin house– or, god, at least complicate it. because ron is petty. he is mean and sharp and ambitious and jealous– and he is loyal to the ends of the earth. he is all those things, and he is and always has been good.

potter becomes before weasley in the alphabet, so harry says not slytherin please and gets told might as well be gryffindor. percy and fred and george are all sitting there in red and gold, ruffling the already-ruffled hair of the boy who lived, smug, and then ron sits down and the hat spits out slytherin!

When kids in the Slytherin Common Room tossed jeers at the pudgy feet of Millicent Bulstrode, Harry rose up to do something about it. This Harry, now one of Snape’s own, got fewer House points lost but many more detentions– it had never been the colors on his hem that Severus hated.

This was not wishing Harry an easy path. This was not wishing the boy a warm House. This was Harry, three weeks in, sleep deprived and considering running away and going back to Privet Drive. This was Harry in the back of Potions class, blank-faced under Snape’s disdain the way he’d perfected under the Dursleys’s torments.

When Quirrell shouted “troll in the dungeons, thought you ought to know,” and Harry overheard that there was a girl in the bathroom crying, he still ran off to make sure she got out okay. He hesitated first, at the back of the little pack of Slytherin first years (at the back so that no one could get behind him)– he hesitated.

And Millicent Bulstrode, who could never quite keep her tummy tucked in enough, could never brush all the cat hair off her robes, never quite keep her temper in check, hesitated, too.

Incredibly Niche Fic: Catholic School Girls hunt down and beat a clown to death

There are no wolves left in Ireland

Orla raises her hand higher. “I’ve been possessed.”

Erin rolls her eyes. “No, she hasn’t, Sister Michael. Orla was iron deficient last year- she got a swimmy feeling in her head every time she stood up and she thought that was demons.”

“It was demons.” says Orla, evenly.

“Oh, and iron tablets made the demons go away, did they?”

Her cousin shrugs and thumbs the side of her nose. “Well, I felt better after I took ‘em, didn’t I?”

Another Derry, another time, same old Pennywise. Armed with friendship, faith, an encyclopaedic knowledge of Catholic heresy and a pitchfork one of them got out of the garden shed, the Derry girls do battle with a clown who really should have known better than to try this shit in Northern Ireland.

My thoughts:

I love Derry Girls and this story captured their general vibe so well.

Take a look at my TBR!

Now, like most anyone who reads things, and reads them extensively, I have a tbr. So! Let's take a look at a couple fics on my list.

To Open Every Door to Night, To Meet Each Rising Sun by Erisenyo Avatar: The Last Airbender, (Sokka/Zuko), 240k, Fire Nation Politics, AU-Post-Canon I picked this up towards the end of my interest in ATLA so I got about halfway through reading it before I was interrupted and then I just couldn't pick it back up again. I loved the writing and the characterization was stunning. It was great! I'm hoping I get to finish it one day.

The Leap by FriendofCarlotta Supernatural, (Destiel), 82k, AU-Cold War, The Berlin Wall This Destiel fic is set in Cold War era Germany and has equal amounts of pining and period-typical homophobia. I originally picked this fic up as part of the 2022 DCBB and because I liked the art that went with it. I read the first two chapters of this fic and then had to set it down because it was pretty heavy and I'm just not into SPN enough anymore to carry myself through 80k of vintage angst. If you liked 91 Whiskey you'll like this fic.

There are no wolves left in Ireland by CatSteppingOnAKeyboard IT x Derry Girls, (gen), 70k, Biblical Horror, Humor The only reason I haven't read this fic yet is that I haven't watched Derry Girls. I LOVED this authors previous two works (here and here) so I'm willing to try but I haven't gotten around to it. I have great confidence that this fic will be wonderful.

I'm sorry to report that I still prefer Coldwave but the first part of this series was so precious I mostly just haven't gotten around to reading part 2.

Macushla by Hinn_Raven Batman Comics (multi), 12k, Stephanie Brown-Centric, AU-Assassins You know those fics you hold onto purely in anticipation of their greatness? No? Just me? Hinn_Raven has written several other fics that I love and that I've already recced on this blog but I've mostly held out on this fic out of cowardice.

Something I want to note is that none of these fics are bad or lacking in any way. Sometimes with fanfic you meet a fic at exactly the right time, or exactly the wrong one. Just 'cause I haven't read them doesn't mean you can't!

Hi! I know imstressedx just posted a fic (right? I’m not crazy?) but I was wondering if you had any other recs for James & Erin fic (to tide us over while you’re working).

yes, you are correct! @imstressedx just posted a banger the other day (which would also be on this list, but since you mentioned it, i'll link it right off the top for the good people of tumblr):

talking about the way things change by @imstressedx - a "missing scene" after 3x06 that feels like it actually happened with its representation of clare's grief. plus, some james and erin that i'm still thinking about days later.

and i am happy to share my other favorites! but i want to caveat and say that i am very bad at keeping up with my "marked for later" list - when i am writing fanfiction, i tend to be a bad reader of fanfiction, and vice versa - and i know that there are a lot of great fics out there that i just haven't read yet. i recommend checking out @derrygirlstrash's fic rec list as well for a few that aren't on here, and i would love to hear folks chime in with their favorites!

in order of the tabs open in my browser, to which there is no order at all, my favs are:

a different way to be by tiffanyachings - a sweet one-shot from erin's POV as she and james walk to prom in season 2. i think it gets erin so right.

darling, i fancy you by lovealwayskatie - another short and sweet one about erin trying to keep her feelings about james secret and failing kind of spectacularly.

the mystery solvers of derry by queercosette (looks like this one's restricted on ao3 so you'll have to sign in to read it) - a derry girls/scooby doo AU that is a TREAT. it's still a WIP, but so far i think the mysteries have been so well thought through and have such a particular scooby-doo-esque quality to them that is truly skilled. it involves every member of the gang in a major way and gets the character voices just right.

a decade and then some by madeinfrance - the first derry girls fic that i loved. the title says it all: it's about the decade between when the show ends and when james and erin get together.

and last on this list but first in my heart: what a girl wants by @derrygirlstrash/carouselunique - also a WIP (fingers crossed that it won't be for long), but best described in one word: hijinks! featuring james being down horrible for erin and an incredibly fun characterization of aisling and charlene kavanaugh. i have been lucky to get to read ahead on this one and there's a jerin scene in the next chapter that makes me grin so big.

i have also recently enjoyed the work of private_bryan, burningsoftly, @erinquinnfromderry, and nowgodsstandupforbastards!

i had the loveliest time in ireland, thank you so much for saying that? i grew up in northern Ireland (my life was basically derry girls and i wish that was an exaggeration) and i stayed in dublin/near dublin for a few months and honestly, Ireland and northern Ireland have my entire heart. it was also entirely marauders coded this time round cause i went with loads of people from my fanfic group and it was bloody lovely.

I've actually been feeling a bit blah about my writing lately, so this was really great to go and revisit my fics!

1. Decisions

Jily - Rated T - 1676 Words

One night in the middle of a war when it doesn't seem quite so hopeless.

This was one of the first fics I wrote after a fifteen year hiatus. It's cheesy and filled with mistakes but I love it.

2. A Bit of Fun

Tedromeda - Rated M - 1446 Words

"His eyes are bright, his hair sticking up in the back from their earlier activities. Andromeda runs a hand through it, and still breathless from laughing, she leans down to kiss him. She thinks she could stay like this forever, in his little flat, happily hidden away from the world." A small moment, near the beginning of Ted and Andromeda's relationship.

I honestly think this is my favourite Tedromeda fic, and it does make me a bit sad that it doesn't seem to be very popular. I love Ted and Andromeda here, that they can't keep their hands to themselves, and it's the first time I have Andromeda considering the possibility that she might want more with Ted.

3. Desperation

Tedromeda - Rated E - 2789 Words

When Andromeda finally gets the news that she's been dreading for nearly two years, there's only one person she wants to see

My first Smut! Although honestly, the smut is my least favourite part of this fic (and not because I think it's bad) there's just so many bits of this fic I love. I love the way Andromeda keeps calm around her father, but then she breaks the moment she's alone, how it's Ted that she needs, how it's the first time we see that Ted might be just as deep as she is.

And yes, I copied the last kiss from New Girl, but that is the best kiss ever recorded for TV and I'm going to shamelessly steal it for my favourite couple.

4. The Potter-Granger-Weasley Pool Party Extravaganza

General - Rated T - 2754 Words

There are times in life when everything falls into place with ease and perfection. The planning, the timing, the execution all come together neatly to produce a perfect weekend. This was not one of those times.

Considering that I seriously struggled with writing this fic and the prompts I was given for the Summer Soiree, I adore how it turned out. It is fully inspired by Derry Girls and that scene in Gilmore Girls where Jess and Dean get into a fight and go through a window. I love exploring the cousin dynamics, and really used experiences with my own cousins for that, plus I loved introducing a bit of Slytherin Lily.

5. She Was Not Wise Yet

Lily Luna/OC - Rated G - 1220 Words

Lily stood up triumphantly and opened the door, throwing her quidditch bag inside. She picked up her bag and with a quick check to make sure no neighbours were about and a wave of her wand, the papers she had dropped flew into her arms. Starting to feel a little bit more put together, she walked into the flat, only to have the door handle catch on her sleeve. ‘Fuck!’ (Or Lily Luna has a bad day)

Once again with the cousin dynamics. I loved exploring Lily Luna as a bit older, trying to keep her life together but also a bit of a mess. She's in her twenties and already onto her second career and suddenly here comes the boy she had complicated feelings for at school.

Another one for the fanfiction shelf, this time the fantastic Vacation James, from the even more fantastic @imstressedx! (Go read it if you haven't already done so!)

There was only one choice for the cover pattern and end papers, but I really shot muself in the foot by wanting to have the book be roughly the shape of a boarding pass - it caused no end of problems with the typesetting, the cutting, and the aligning, and in the end the cover graphic was too wide to fit the right aspect ratio, so I just had it disappearing off the edge (still looks OK, IMO! And the South African flag in the background is there for reasons)

I couldn't resist putting one of the doodles that inspired imstressedx to write this fic on the first title page, and even tried something new by using an ink pad to stain the edges. Add in some hand sewn red and yellow endbands, and it doesn't look half bad!

So this fic is really fun to write, and I need to get back to it! It's, as the summary says, an AU where the Derry Girls are the Scooby Gang, and they stumble on a mystery that could spell doom for everyone in Derry - unfortunately, they're all sixteen and act like it. It's a fic that I've so far always smiled a lot while writing, and the response from the fandom has been so so nice <3

Total Drama is such a good fandom to get into if you want to write AU fic, and me being obsessed with Heathers, I had to write a Heathers AU. It fits so well too - the main characters are a good girl who struggles with bitter anger and dark thoughts, a bad boy who walks the line between charming and sociopathic, a queen bee so thoroughly shallow it almost passes for depth, a perky and immature cheerleader who slowly realises she's being dragged down by the people she hangs out with, and a quiet, bookish loner who is so convinced she's in the right that she can't see her own capacity for cruelty.

Gosh. Where would I be without mentioning mArinette. This is the fic I'm most divided about, because I love it, however I also got a massive amount of negative backlash as a result. I guess that whole "10% of every group are assholes, so the bigger the group, the louder the assholes start sounding" thing is true. Anyway, this fic is deeply personal to me, but it's also silly, campy, romantic, angsty, and fluffy.
