More on: “I’m so surprised more people don’t evaluate and compare & contrast Kaiba and Diva in relation to each other more often”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm looking at these pics side by side and either KT just straight up has a type of fav character design that he can’t shake himself out of OR this was on purpose to draw parallels between the two making them seem like shadow figures of each other/rivals/foils--
Both have a sleeveless coat, high collar, dramatic coat tail, pendant (or at least, I still solidly believe that KT just forgot to give Kaiba’s his, or perhaps you could argue that it missing has a symbolic reason or maybe to contrast with Sera and Diva who both have a small triangle pendant, turtleneck
Kaiba: silver/gray metal arm bracers, nothing special with hair sans when he’s dueling the duel gazer/headset is on his left, kneepads, belt, and his coat has the little spikes at the waist creating the flair of the spikes at his waist
Diva: gold bracelets, decorated hair with the longer strand on his right, wrapped fabric at the waist, spikes/flair at the end of his sleeves Also, nice framing with them literally in an inverted stance toward each other. And while on the Seto’s side it’s just himself and Mokuba against the rest of the world on Diva’s side he has all the kids that have joined the Plana at his back.
Like, I’m not an artist or visual director but all of these things are almost so 1:1 I highly doubt that we WEREN’T supposed to draw these connections. This seems to be visual cues galore.
And then for the meta/story side because I am first and foremost a story and writing evaluator:
When you really stop to think about it Diva and Kaiba are remarkably good character foils of each other with a lot of the same yet different methods, actions, flaws, weaknesses, and goals/motivations.
Motivations/Goals (those outside the main conflict of the film): Diva wants to create a new perfect dimension, a Utopia collective consciousness that the Plana would create and guide others to (this is more explicitly stated in the sub). And the Shadi and revenge thing, but more on that later.
Kaiba, (again most explicitly stated in the sub with Kaiba’s pre-tournament speech about how the new Duel Disk is meant to bridge the gap between people of all race/country/creed/etc. and the Transcend Game Manga) is trying to achieve a similar thing with his games and the duel disk. He states how the body is like a prison and these barriers between people lead to bloody useless wars. His connection via games is meant to escape that. He has a bunch of kids as the beta testers for their minds are the most imaginative. Kaiba is reaching for his own collective consciousness here but in a very different way.
Methods: Diva has complete confidence in the power of the Plana. He’s been told by Shadi about this great power and has seen it in action before he even receives the Quantum Cube himself. Diva and the rest of the Plana has seen that utopia the power of the Plana can provide (and Sera even showed Yugi a glimpse of it) but there is still that level of uncertainty in the creation of this new dimension. Sera states after Diva has gotten corrupted by the ring that the Cube has the power to create a new shining world of light, but if one drop of darkness gets in there the whole thing can be corrupted.
Kaiba has complete confidence with his tech. It is a simple equation of A + B = C. It may take it a while to get there, but there is a steady and succinct step-by-step process in his mind on how to get to point A to point B. And if he runs into a roadblock one way he explores another solution--as seen by when the Dimension Ascension had its safety limits in the World of Duel Links his focus became entirely on the puzzle, and then from the puzzle to the Duel Dimension System (it’s not a time machine i s2g if I see that one more time I will sCream. Atem recognizes him. He wouldn’t if it’s a time machine. It’s the darkside of dimensions, not the darkside of time travel). Kaiba’s methods are calculated and testable. There’s a scientific process to his approach.
Actions: They have very similar goal when it comes to the wider global scope, and yet intact that goal in different ways, despite both believing they are right in their own solutions even though this point never came up between them (but did between Diva and Yugi). Diva has seen paradise and that’s all he’s interested in until Yugi challenges him about building that paradise with everyone instead of gifting it to a few.
Aside from that conflict point though, Diva and Kaiba are pretty similarly ham-fisted when it comes to their actions once the plot of DSoD kicks off. Kaiba stomps around Domino City as he sees fit, he faces his challenges head on. And he is pretty clearly 100000% done with magical things running his tournaments and creates a counter for both of Diva’s Plana powers without much of a snag.
The Duel: Then of course they duel each other. And in this direct challenge they are pretty evenly matched. Kaiba, who the audience knows is a powerful duelist at this point dishes out powerful attack after powerful attack and even has new, stronger monsters to fight with. Yet Diva finds a way to avoid or redirect those attacks, even being bold enough to have an attitude that feels like he’s toying with Kaiba. While few others can go toe to toe with Kaiba in a duel the match was heavily going in Diva’s favor until Seto managed to summon Obelisk by picking up with the trace memories/wavelengths in the tomb.
Death and grieving: Both of them are trying to deal with the fallout of the death of someone that played a big role in their lives, but how each of their plotlines resolve for this are opposite at the end. Despite Diva’s actions to try and get rid of Bakura being against everything Shadi taught him and the rest of the Plana kids and even Sera and Manny trying to talk him down from it he doesn’t listen. Diva gets so caught up in the pain he’s feeling instead of what he knows. He’s eager to be able to blame someone for Shadi’s death he’s ignoring that Ryou Bakura is likely not the same as the ring spirit. But when confronting Ryou and realizes the truth he can’t ignore it anymore and he lets Ryou go and the glow of the cube fades. (Remember, it was the appearance of the corrupted Manny that caused the banishment of Ryou, not Diva himself, I see this getting mixed up quite a bit) And then he is able to start to fully move past his fixation on revenge.
But Kaiba hasn’t been able to make that progress himself. Even after Yugi reassembles the puzzle himself and shows it’s empty Seto keeps hounding Yugi, spitting cruel words and still refusing to believe that Atem isn’t still within Yugi. Then, even after Atem temporarily returns that isn’t enough for him to complete his grieving process, he finds a way to travel across dimensions for one last duel.
Flaws: Seto and Diva share some weaknesses in their ambition, ego, and arrogance yet at the same time it’s a situation of the pot calling the kettle black. Due to their own respective power they both think they’re invincible. Diva shittalks Kaiba’s egotistical actions of taking over Domino City and creating his own version of a collective consciousness within Duel Links. But Diva is doing a similar thing himself by how he’s dictating who should have the right to exist and even erasing people just for standing in his way like Jounouchi. Yet at the same time Diva thinks the power of the Plana is unstoppable and plain incompressible to anyone who is not apart of it--something that he gets a rude awakening for when Kaiba deflects his attempt to distillate him in the tomb and then later when Diva gets captured.
And then Kaiba gets knocked down a peg when his duel with Diva is a close one and then again when he has to team up with Yugi in order to defeat Diva’s corrupted form.
The character paths Diva and Seto are on through dsod are very similar. The characters are alike, but different. They have plenty in common to draw comparison to yet also differences that foil each other many steps of the way. And I just find this neat ™ and am surprised there isn’t more talk about these two in relation to each other when there’s so much crossover and they’re honesty the main two opposing forces of the film. Like there is so much going on here  TwT

DSOD is such a funny movie. Kaiba comes on screen in his giant fucking space station molded into his company logo and I just laughed. He’s so dramatic. He misses his rival and is so obsessed with getting some closure for once in his goddamn life that he spent well over a billion dollars to excavate a cursed puzzle and build a space elevator to the afterlife but the minute anyone says anything about ‘hey maybe that’s a little unhealthy’ he’s snapping and snarling and telling them to fuck off. Except the cube guy. He’s has a duel disk and is also full of unprocessed grief so he can stay. Yugi Moto looks them dead in the eye and says “first of all, I’m only here because you both blackmailed me. Secondly, fuck you both for that, by the way. Thirdly, I’m gonna kick your ass”. Card games ensue, meanwhile Yugi tries his absolute best to show Kaiba the pharaoh is gone and maybe he needs to spend some time reflecting on his emotions and yes the invitation is still open to talk about Him BUT THEN THE NARRATIVE PROVED KAIBA RIGHT?!! AND THE PHARAOH COMES BACK AND YUGI HAS TO LOOK KAIBA IN THE EYE AND TELL HIM THAT HES SORRY FOR DOUBTING HIM?? WHAT. What Kaiba takes from all this is that a) his horrid coping mechanisms work after all, b) if he just fucks around enough and spends all his money he really can be king of the world and c) the best option is definitely to finish that space elevator and fucking. Go to the afterlife I guess. To duel his “hated rival” or whatever. Fuck off

Together, We’ll be Okay
◇ Happy birthday to mi good pal, Al ( @bpdkaiba )! Hope you have a great day fren and thanks for putting up with me! 🎊🎂🎉
[Read on Ao3 here]
Summary: One time each where Ryou, Diva, and Seto were having a rough time with something. Each time they were there for each other. But that's what QPR partners are for, aren't they?
Seto didn’t snack much. But the same couldn’t be said for Mokuba. Or Ryou and Diva who didn’t live in the condo with the brothers yet never seemed to hang out in their own homes and honestly Kaiba should start charging them rent.
Yet he never would.
But at the very least, they aided with the housework, even if they also added to it in some ways.
“Do you really need all of these?” Seto complained as he and Ryou lugged in the bags of groceries.
“Yes! I can’t just borrow from Mokuba all the time and you never keep snack food stocked!”
“Hmm, I wonder if it’s because it’s not healthy?” Seto shot back sarcastically.
Ryou stuck out his tongue at him.
He took care of putting away the refrigerated goods while Seto did the non-temperature sensitive ones.
But when… since when were there so many cans of soup and vegetables? Or granola bars? Mokuba certainly didn’t buy them and Seto only ever replenished things when they got low on something. He questioned Ryou about it. He also had no idea how this almost hoarder-level of preservative foods had started to overtake the cabinet.
Seto had to push the new ones into the spices spot so everything could be put away.
There was only one person it could have been then.
Diva got back from class by the time they were done putting everything away.
“I’m just in time to help,” he teased.
“You’re on dinner duty with Mokuba so that’s the trade-off,” Ryou retorted.
“Oh no, what a nightmare.”
Their light laughter was interrupted by Seto.
“Diva, what’s with all this?” he asked opening the one overflowing cabinet. “You buy all these?”
“Hm? Oh, yeah I guess I did. I think the last time I went to the store they were on sale, so.”
“But thirty cans of soup?”
Diva frowned before stepping over to get a better look. After a few moments of silent counting he genuinely seemed to not know how that many had accumulated.
“Huh, well I didn’t mean to buy that many but it’s good to have extra.”
A pause.
“None of us like tomato soup though,” Ryou pointed out.
“Salary isn’t exactly tight here but I’d prefer it if you didn’t waste it on food we don’t eat.”
“Well—you don’t know, you might warm up to the flavor.”
“Diva, it’s burning shelf space and money.”
“You never know when we’ll need it,” Diva protested.
Kaiba scoffed. “Under what circumstances?”
“Listen Kaiba—" he started to retort.
They just did. Diva couldn’t explain why, but he felt it deeply that they needed all that he had stockpiled. They just did. What if they got shut in by the weather? Or the power went out? Or all the stores closed? Or—
Or what if one day they simply didn’t have any food?
“Just because you’ve never had to choose between eating something that may give you food poisoning or nothing at all doesn’t mean we all haven’t,” Diva snapped.
A terse pause.
“Okay, okay—simmer down, both of you,” Ryou interjected.
With a frown Diva brought his voice back to neutral. He wasn’t one to lose his temper easily. Not anymore.
“My apologies, I…”
“Elaborate. Help us understand,” Seto prompted.
“Sera has pointed this out to me once or twice. When we were younger anything that was preserved well was worth its weight in gold. I’m not—I’m not meaning to hoard them I just…”
“No, that makes sense,” Ryou said.
“I get it. You don’t have to say anymore if you don’t want.” There’s a pause as Seto grabs the surplus cans and tosses them in a grocery bag.
“We do have to do something with all these though. How about we find some shelter we can give them to?”
Diva let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.
“I’d… I’d like that, yes. Thank you.”
Diva gives a small touch on Ryou and Seto’s arm as he walks by to help collect the extras.
“What’s your request for dinner then? I’ll make whatever you both can agree on.”
_____
“C’mon will you just… light?” There were a few more fruitless spins of the lighter Diva held up to the sticks of incense. He liked the scent. It helped him de-stress from the day.
“Just get a new one,” Kaiba said with a smirk.
“This one’s brand new! It should be fine!”
“Let me try,” Ryou said holding out his hand.
With a huff Diva slapped it in Ryou’s palm. Though much to his relief Ryou didn’t get it either and embarrassed him to oblivion.
“Hm. Maybe if you ask nice Kaiba will sue them for a defective product,” Ryou joked.
“Please, I’d just ask for a refund like a normal person,” Kaiba said with a roll of his eyes.
He stalked over and took the lighter from Ryou’s hand and gave it a shot himself.
He got a spark. “Well, it’s partially working at the very least.”
After a few more tries he managed to get a small, but steady, flame.
“I think you just need to learn how to use a lighter,” Seto teased before handing it off to Diva again.
“You couldn’t go ahead and finish the job while you had a steady flame?” Diva said with an exasperated gesture to the sticks.
“You gotta learn.”
“You can do it, I believe in you!” Ryou chimed in.
Diva huffed at the gentle bullying before giving the device another try.
Flick. Flick. Flick. Diva kept trying the spin wheel to no avail.
“I’m pretty sure you broke it, Kaiba.”
“Don’t blame me for your incompetence—”
Seto reached over to take it from Diva’s hand again, yet right as he did a flame burst to life between the many dead spins.
Seto yanked back his hand, pulling it close to his chest and holding it with his other one.
“Oh my g—Seto are you okay? How bad did it get you?”
In an instant Diva was on his feet trying to check the injury. Wasting no time Ryou rushed to get a wet cloth.
“Here, put this on it!”
But Seto just stood paralyzed.
“Seto, let me see.”
Firm but not forceful fingers pulled at Seto’s hands. Slowly, he loosened his grip. Just a small red mark on the underside of his fingers.
“Doesn’t look too bad,” Ryou said, relieved as he pressed the cool towel to the mark.
Seto still hadn’t been spoken. But Diva and Ryou had noticed the shift in him as soon as he had pulled his hand back. They were in sensitive territory. They didn't push it. Nor did they bring it up again after. Diva put some ointment for burns on the mark and the three of them spent the rest of the evening playing multiplayer fighting games to distract Seto. They went on team mode and tripped up the opposing team by all having the screenname Seto usually used. Their opponents had no idea which one of them to be most fearful of.
Seto was eternally grateful.
_____
Uninterrupted sleep was rare in the Kaiba home.
For Seto, it had become a part of his lifestyle. At the very least it allowed him to have some free time he otherwise wouldn’t budget into his day. And sometimes, he got a visitor. Ryou’s presence wasn’t an unexpected one anymore, it seemed they both struggled with getting a full eight hours. Or Ryou just had an utter lack of any sort of schedule. Whichever.
“I’ll make us some tea,” he says upon hearing Ryou’s footsteps get to the end of the hall and into the living room. His eyes stayed glued to his screen until he finished the line of code he was on before saving his work and getting up.
They settled in next to each other on the couch.
“Dream?”
“Mm.”
“Talk or no?”
“No,” Ryou replies. “What are you doing?”
“Making a little game. Dungeon crawler.”
Seto launched into the details, filling the air with noise of some sort. He could only hoped it helped. But was it more likely that it just bored whoever he spoke to? Probably. But Seto took it as a good sign that here and there Ryou would interrupt him with questions. Either he was genuinely interested, or was just as eager to fill the silence as Seto. There was even a small portion of a level that was finished enough that Ryou got to play test it. Well, until he found a bug that broke the game. But in Kaiba's defense, coding was full of bugs even if you were Seto Kaiba.
"Wait until I tell everyone at the company about this," Ryou laughed.
"Don't you dare!"
"I'll plaster it up on the bulletin board."
Seto whacked him with pillow on the couch.
About fifteen minutes later, there was another set of footsteps. Not Mokuba, Seto knew his gait.
“Did we wake you?” Ryou asked the frazzled mess of blue hair.
“Uh-uh. Woke up naturally and then heard you guys.”
Diva plopped down on the couch too—and laid across Ryou and Seto’s legs horizontally.
“Ow! Shoulder, shoulder, shift your weight, Diva!”
Diva gave a soft laugh at Seto’s pain before readjusting himself.
But then his expression turned serious.
“You two tell me if there’s anything I can do.”
“Nothing at the moment. Well actually, another cup?” Ryou asked holding up his mug.
“Just save my spot for me.”
Diva returned a few minutes later, this time settling between the two. He handed Ryou the mug and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Then one to Seto. Diva slung an arm around both and pulled them close.
Mokuba found them asleep like that in the morning.

More Duel Links! The official translations for these weren't bad iirc... but perhaps a bit too loose at certain parts, so a few hidden gems get missed as a result.
Note that Bakura has a habit of tacking on a 'respectful' honorific to Host/Landlord.
Ryou challenges Bakura at the Gate:
Tumblr media
"Well, well... (Well, look who we have here...) If it isn't my dear Host/Landlord!"
More literally, "What an appearance by the Host/my Landlord!" or "To think that my dear Host/Landlord would show up!"
Start of the duel + Ryou wins:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I won't let you control me anymore! My friends and I will strike you down!" (This is the exact line Ryou types on the computer the second time he communicates with Bakura during Monster World.)
"You... don't control me anymore!" (This looks like the same pre-duel line, but Ryou adds なんか to 支配されない, which can mean 'won't let you control me and such' or place emphasis on Bakura's now non-existent influence on him since Bakura's gone in reality. Regardless of how it's to be taken, both are empowerment on Ryou's part and diminishes Bakura.)
After the duel ends and Ryou wins:
Tumblr media
"Let it be my loss this time, dear Host/Landlord. But don't forget. I'm your very darkness... hehehehehe..."
This one is particularly interesting because it echoes the line Bakura delivers as he's disappearing when he loses to Yami Marik. It's almost word for word but with omissions and framed differently/focused on Ryou instead. The original is,
今回はオレ様の負けにしておいてやる…たが覚えておけ…オレは必ず蘇り…貴様を殺す*
クク…
オレはもともと「闇」…そのものなんだからよ…ヒャハハハァ
"Let it be my loss this time... But remember this... I'll definitely come back (lit. resurrect)... and then I'll kill* you.
Hehe...
I'm 'darkness'... itself after all ("originally" or "by nature")... Hyahahaha"
The first line is usually translated as "I'll let you win this time" in the eng manga/subbed anime. Btw, he also says this just before Osiris attacks during the first BC match-up with Atem (hence, why Yami Marik goes, "I've heard that before" during their duel in the anime). I always thought it noteworthy that Bakura verbalizes it as 'his defeat' in jp rather than his opponent's win (I know, it essentially means the same thing, but we can't rule out jp nuance).
Another difference is he says "Don't forget" to Ryou rather than "Remember this".
And the most conspicuous one is that he says "I'm your very darkness" to Ryou instead of "I'm darkness itself".
*On that note, Bakura does deliver the original at the end of his Duel Links event. Still slightly different but almost a direct quote this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bakura has a penchant for adding the masculine assertive particle/indicator ぜ to his sentences, so you can see that at the end in the first screenshot. Wording is a bit different as well, but the meaning stays true to the original.
The most glaring difference is the change from 貴様を殺す (to kill you) to 貴様らを倒す (to defeat you all) in the second screenshot. Technically, 倒す can also mean "to kill", but I wonder what the reason is for the switch. First thing that came to mind was censorship, but, yknow, again, there's jp nuance too. Hm.
Unfortunately, what I've seen of this scene/interaction may not be complete? In eng Duel Links, there's a bit more dialogue after the "I'm your very darkness" line, but I can't find it in jp. If anyone can find or provide full pre- and post-duel scenes of Ryou (the player) vs Bakura, win and loss, in jp, I'll happily translate them in full. Feel free to message me!
