Just like last year, we had a mix between camping and staying in cottages during the last December/January holidays. We started with camping in Greyton at Twin Rivers. This camp site is completely off the grid, but has amazingly large sites. We loved staying there as the river is toddler-friendly and just a short walk away. I don't remember how I picked the first name Alex, but! when I was deciding on its last name, my partner rightly suggested it needed to be a joke on a lengthened form of Alex - "is" or "ander". both for the silly aspect, and because "Alex Is" is an existential crisis (what if Alex isn't?) and "Alex Ander" conveys tender awkwardness ("and errrr....."). I loved both of these so I used both hahaha. Alexis Anders, who goes by Alex! the middle name Alexander was the logical conclusion to the joke, making its full name Alexis Alexander Anders.... why did its parents do this, I wonder. or did it choose this name itself? trans power move?

completing its law degree!! after it turned, Alex landed in some very dark places emotionally and in general just... found it a lot of effort to even think life was worth living. this was the first time in a long while it felt optimistic about life! and proud of itself! and like it was living in line with its values :3 it represents an important turning point in Alex's life and it's a memory it holds very dear...!

no traditional phobias, but the Garble loooves to play on Alex's fatal sunlight allergy and its natural anxiety towards sunlight, often amping that anxiety up to phobia levels when it wants to punish or manipulate Alex. Alex can spend time out during the day if there's cloud cover, but even this is a struggle sometimes. there are days where it can do nothing but board up all the windows and cower inside. it's a fear response that ebbs and flows, though, and it's not always at phobia heights. Alex rather enjoys sitting near the sunlight some days!

My image is of something that's theatrical instead of grounded-- characters pose and have soliloquies that no one else can hear and there's dance elements, etc.

Hunter's movements start out as pretty natural-- even when singing, he doesn't move around much unless being positioned by someone else (like when he's led in a dance.) What he does most is like... sway with emotion. In general, he's something that is pushed around by his environment.

This changes during Father-- when Hunter changes appearance, his movements become more deliberately posed and unnatural, with a feeling of performance. The drama gets amped way up in King of Swords (Reversed), where he starts making exaggerated gestures, adding flourishes to mundane actions, moving to the beat... generally putting on much more of a show than was previously in-character for him. It ebbs and flows but overall sticks around until the end, even after he drops his guise and his appearance changes back.

With everything else going on in the world, the problems of Marvel are not super high on my list but I did just skim the article. I will say despite the actual issues outlined in that article I do think it's just realistic that Marvel wasn't going to stay at the top forever. Everything ebbs and flows in these industries. I do think they spread themselves a bit too thin with all the tv shows and other things which also just leads to superhero fatigue etc.

As for Z, who knows, but I will say as a non Marvel expert I feel like Spidey is a bit unique as a property. If Z signs on for anything it's for future Spidey movies, not likely being in other widespread MCU projects. But I feel like Spiderman is such a huge IP on its own that aside of like the VX issues mentioned in the article, it's one of the few Marvel properties that I could see putting butts in theatres and making money because people LOVE Spiderman and it has continued to be successful to date, no matter how many times it's rebooted. So in that sense, yes Spidey is Marvel, but I think it easily still has the chance to be very commercially successful.

I would imagine any decisions Z is making about Marvel are specific to what she is being promised re: Spidey and less about Marvel overall.

This is music of extremes: abstract in its forms and lyrical figures, but also grounded in visceral, palpable waves of sound; dissonant and volatile, punctuated by sharp swings in mood, but also profoundly integrated; keyed to the reedy fragility of Robin Wattie’s voice, but also building to huge crescendos, powered by Tasy Hudson’s intuitive and intense drumming and Mathieu Ball’s singular techniques of amp abuse. And soon enough, Wattie reminds you that she can holler and howl with as much aggressivity as any other singer in heavy music. She can play, too, complementing Ball’s sheets of sound. But even more so than on previous BIG|BRAVE records, Wattie’s voice is the guiding force, the emotional fulcrum on which nature morte turns. The band fuses its remarkable access to elemental flows of desire and dread to its strong and very specific aesthetic sensibility. It’s a terrific record.

We should underscore: nature morte is not music for the background or for casual pleasures. Many listeners will find it too loud, or too mercurial, or too remote from the shapes of conventional songcraft. Songs like “carvers, farriers, and knaves” and “the fable of subjugation” are indeed mercurial, unconventional and often quite loud. The compositional approach is somewhat similar to Sumac’s on 2020’s May You Be Held, and one could also cite Fleetwood Mac’s Then Play On (1972) as a precedent for how mood might be tracked across a record’s expertly arranged ebbs, flows and thematic structures. But mostly Ball, Hudson and Wattie are following their own shared vision for how music might work, and for how it might work on its audience.

It works, but it’s not an easy thing to endure or to tune in to closely. Opening song “carvers, farriers, and knaves” incorporates the aforementioned shifts in tonal extremes, and that dynamic also informs Wattie’s lyrics. The title is instructive: “farrier” may be a less familiar term, meaning a craftsman who specializes in caring for horses’ hooves and fitting them with iron shoes. In that context, “carver” takes on powerful ambiguity. That could be the farrier himself, tending to the shape of a hoof, or it could be the butcher, to whom the horse is sent when the animal is exhausted, old and injured. So who is the knave?

Wattie and the band are not forthcoming with a direct answer, but “the fable of subjugation” is suggestive. The song comes at the midpoint of nature morte, and it’s tempting to call it the heart of the record. It may be the most agonized display of musical intensity, escalating from folkish foreboding, to keen yearning, to the kind of sonic violence the band so expertly builds. The listener is compelled, subject to those intensifications. They track alongside the lyrics, which are plaintive and insistent; Wattie sings, “Allow me to prevail / Over all your lure,” and then, “Your force—it’s so lawless and rash / Give me your gift and I will relish with you!” Two of those clauses are imperatives (“Allow me to prevail,” “Give me your gift”), and the imperative structure in effect inverts the meaning of key terms: allow, gift. There are multiple syntactic manipulations that hide the flow of power, the means by which the song’s addressee is subjugated, and perhaps rendered knavish by listening to the lyric speaker’s voice.

That’s all pretty hifalutin, and thinking the lyrics in absence of the music in part undoes their power. One loses the electric desire coursing through the song, and the whole record. The title of nature morte might reference death, but this music is frightfully, joyfully and overwhelmingly alive.

Eat, and Love Yourself - Graphic Novel – Contemporary Realistic Fiction Sweeney Boo Published 2020 by Boom! Box

Eat, and Love Yourself by Sweeney Boo (2020) is a fantastic YA graphic novel that discusses the very real world of disordered eating. Boo has created a very digestible and understandable representation of this disorder and writes in a way that can be relatable and appreciated by a range of audiences, especially YA readers.

This 160pg graphic novel focuses on main character Mindy as she navigates womanhood and disordered eating in a realistic and familiar world with this connection is all too common. Throughout this short novel, we explore her ebb and flow of feelings and relationships as she tries to learn how to love herself again.

Tackling issues of mental health and disordered eating for a young adult audience, in my opinion, is very admirable and appreciated. Boo does an excellent job of showing us the range of feelings and tactics one goes through while struggling with things like these and is realistic with us that there isn’t just some cure all or perfect resolution- it’s an uphill battle that takes a lot of strength and resilience. 

My sister gifted this to me early in the COVID-19 pandemic and felt like an incredible welcome when my personal issues with mental health, eating, body image, identity, expression, depression, and anxiety shot all over the place. Boo writes her character with extreme character and realism, I related to her struggles immediately, my mental health and consequential behaviors having things like my weight fluctuate often and leaving my emotions to follow suit. The writing and illustrations are grounding and beautiful and a breath of fresh air. I can see myself reading this novel again soon.

At once of my jobs, we have a designated YA room with materials, displays, and space specifically for our YA patrons that need that. Over the past year, the YA Librarian has been working tirelessly and diligently in making sure that those who use this space and are in this community are seen, heard, and supported. We have even partnered with the High School and students there to build up representation in our displays. Over the summer, we worked with high school students to build a display featuring representations of eating disorders in teens and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t impact me. Every nuance of identity deserves a place in media, everyone deserves to be seen. I can definitely see this graphic joining a display such as this in the library it calls home. Body appreciation and acceptance as well as positivity is important for a range of ages and identities; especially with media pushing specific ways to be in various forms 24/7. I think this could also be a great addition to representative and/or simply annual graphic novel book clubs/ reading groups.

- Until you pass the test of character, the Word of God spoken about your Life might not come to fulfillment.

- A number of believers have failed in character testing, and that has been the reason why the promises of God are far-fetched or delayed in their lives.

- Your character matters to God in whatever He wanted to give to you.

• Why the delay in the release of the blessing? What has inhibited the flow of the blessing?

- When you experience a sudden change in the flow of God's Blessing in your Life, and the flow of the Blessing begins to ebb away, started to go out; It means something has gone wrong.

- The cause of the blessing being ebbed might be the Pride that is found in your life.

- Your heart may have gone up, and be contaminated with pride; thinking you have arrived and begin to feel that you are above others.

YOU think you are now better than some people. You think more of the self than God.

PERADVENTURE God has put a little measure of His anointing on your Life, and people have started testifying when you pray for them. You afterwards begin to think the anointing on your Life is higher than that of your Senior Pastor. IF such thoughts are permitted in your heart, you have permitted rebellion and may begin to despise or disdain your leader—your Pastor.

THE outcome of this may be calamitous.

GOD is not an author of confusion, He would not give you the anointing that is higher than that of your Pastor whilst you are still serving under him.

IF any higher anointing would be given to you at all, God would move you out of the place.

- When all or any of the above mentioned points are the thoughts of your mind, Because of your breakthrough or the blessing you anticipated; God would stop the Blessing.

HE would not allow the Blessing to materialize, or stop the flow of it, if the Blessing has started at all.

- The reason is, such thoughts are by-products of Pride.

• When a new thing is about to happen in your life or a new thing has just started to happen. Do not be overjoyed about it, to the point that you begin to have contempt for others, especially those who are higher than you.

- When Hagar, Sarah's maid, discovered she was pregnant, she began to look at her mistress with contempt:

"He [Abraham] went in to [the bed of] Hagar, and she conceived; AND WHEN SHE REALIZED THAT SHE HAD CONCEIVED, SHE LOOKED WITH CONTEMPT ON HER MISTRESS [regarding Sarai as insignificant because of her infertility]" (Genesis 16:4 AMP).

- Give all the glory of whatever good thing that happens to God, in your heart. Even when others are trying to praise you for the result or success, humble yourself and give all the honour and glory to God.

- Do not feel Big. And do not suddenly change in your disposition to people. Do not boast about the material breakthrough you have just experienced.

- Do not talk about it to receive people's attention: "LET ANOTHER MAN PRAISE YOU, AND NOT YOUR OWN MOUTH; A stranger, and not your own lips" (Proverbs 27:2).

• Pride is destructive!

- Many have truncated, halt what God is about to do or has started to do in their lives because of Pride.

- Pride manifested itself in speeches, greetings, dressings, and every action of whoever has it; depending on the level of the Pride in such a person.

- God detests Pride. He personally will stand on the way of a proud person:

"In fact, God treats us with even greater kindness, just as the Scriptures say, “God opposes everyone who is proud, but he blesses all who are humble with undeserved grace" (James 4:6 Contemporary English Version).

- God will deal with a proud person by Himself. If pride is found in your life, favour would be far away from you.

- Many people desire and pray for God's favour but they could not receive it because of pride.

- Humility is the key to receive from God. If you humble yourself, you will receive the desired Blessings from God.

• In addition, learning how to appreciate God for every little result you have gotten, is of great importance.

- If you do not know how to thank and praise God, you cannot cannot continue in the flow of His Blessings.

- You are nothing without God. Remain small in your own eyes and do not allow Pride.

- If you think you are better than others because of the material comforts, the Blessings you have received; the flow of it would be stopped by God.

- Many are having problems in handling their material comforts. Do not allow the Blessings of God in your Life turns to a curse.

• You will not fail in Jesus' name.

Once you finally emerge to the fresh air (I apply the term fresh very loosely here), away from subway smog and mass of commuters on a Thursday evening, the lights strung up from fire escapes display a color wheel through the sky. I walked up to the Musical Hall at Williamsburg, potachos in hand, and looked at other Dijon hopefuls getting their bags checked in line. My friend who accompanied me on this experience, watched me as I had to surrender the remains of my potachos to the security guard, along with my 3 bottles of red gatorade. Unable to bring outside food in the venue, we stood and chugged our bottles - security guard included, as people began to flood the venue. Murmurs begin to ebb and flow, and then stop:

The Music Hall at Williamsburg contains two stories available for general admission, along with balconies on the wing of the stage that are reserved for special seats. On this particular night, I didn’t feel like vying for my viewing experience in the persistent mosh of people who enjoy throwing elbows during slow songs, so I stayed on the second level. This contained a more peaceful crowd, one that sacrificed proximity for the chance to drink their beers in piece. From here, I had a top down view of the Dijon band’s entrance onto the stage.

The stage was small and intimate, with dim lighting meant to supplement the main event. So once the band begins their set with ‘Big Mike’s’, the intro song of their album ‘Absolutely’, the crowd pays their full attention to the stage. The bass line is able to carry the rhythm of Dijon’s vocals, and they begin with a softer opening. As the song’s refrain approaches, the crowd regains some vitality - including my concert partner - and sing along with passion. “I might drop to my knees, Joanna please.” The darkened silhouettes of the concertgoers swing and sway to the artist’s command. 

Throughout the show, Dijon seems to be leaning on something, possibly a mic stand. But his posture is noticeably off - he is hunched over, and with every pained lyric he elicits the hunchback seems to increase. At some points, he looks contorted, slamming his foot down on beat, lurching his body and lifting it back up on tempo. To my knowledge, Dijon is an averagely healthy individual. These body movements may be purposeful, to amplify the performance. I give props to this strive for artistry, because moments like this can’t be grasped auditorily by listening to an album. Dijon often leans into the energy of the crowd, offering his own into the mix as well.

And soon enough, Dijon rips the calm apart with his explosive lead single, ‘Many Times’. As a personal favorite of mine, all decorum leaves my body and is replaced with the lyrics. “I’ve been here a thousand times, I don’t wanna go again, well I've been here a thousand times, one thousand and one won’t be so bad”. 

While the original song is very lively, and not always fitting on a standard time signature, on this night, the band amps up the tactics and the words bleed into the following lines. In this song particularly, Dijon veers away from the studio version’s timing, while the band as a whole riffs their own adlibs. After a point, the song is indistinguishable from the original as a jam session takes place (i.e. Talk Down). I must say this was a sad experience though - did they have to experiment on MY favorite song? (of course they did why would I get my way)

The crowd is active through the set, but they may not know the songs fully. With the standout hits, the people are loud and confident, but for the majority of the set people for the most part stand in awe. The band plays a good amount of music from their most recent release as well as some older deep cuts, but it is very rare that the songs receive word for word recitals. But Dijon may want this result, riffing off of their originals at will. There was a point to be made that the night at the Williamsburg was to be an original experience - any writings or video recordings will be just a glimpse.
