Take My Hand
Summary: Edwin writes his feelings for Selene into his diary as he struggles to come to terms with them.

Warnings: Sappy romantice feelings and angst? Also some pre-emptive grief stuff.
Notes: Written for the Flash Fiction Friday prompt 'Take My Hand' and set around a week before the events of To Heal A Broken Soul.
If you’d only place your hand in mine, I’d be able to show you how much you mean to me. But I can only watch as you push yourself ever further out to sea and leave me standing on the shore.
I can see how much you hurt. Can see the pain being inflicted on you by those with ill intent. And yet I cannot say a word about it. Not if I want to help you save the city you’ve been bleeding yourself dry for.
I want to scream and shout and whisk you away from the vipers with their fangs at your throat. But you’d never come with me. As much as my heart cries out for me to try, I have to respect the choices you’ve made.
Garden above, it’s killing me to know that you’d rather lose yourself to duty than to step back and let anyone else in. I can see how much it’s killing you too, but you’re too stubborn to acknowledge that. It’s becoming almost too frustrating to bear.
It would be enough to make me give up; were it not for the way my heart soars with every smile. The way my soul sings when you l hear you laugh. I know you do not feel the same for me, but I cannot help but continue to fall for you every time we speak. I love you, and I think I always have.
So as much as it hurts, I will sit here on the shore, waiting to jump in when the current inevitably becomes too strong for you to cope. I can only hope that you’ll take my hand when I am finally able to offer it, for I do not know what I shall do if you refuse.
Edwin heaved a sigh, letting his quill drop to the desk as he placed his head in his hands. His chest ached as he swallowed down a sob. As much as he would continue praying otherwise, he knew what Selene’s choice would be, and it was almost enough to break him utterly. He pulled out his holy symbol and ran his thumbs over the carved, wooden surface. He bowed his head to it and closed his eyes, tears streaming into his beard. He muttered a short prayer, before speaking more candidly,
“Please, watch over her. I know she is no devotee, but I cannot bear the thought of- of-”
Pre-emptive grief gripped his throat, choking off his words. Edwin felt the gentle caress of Galana on his shoulders, the touch of a mother consoling Her lost child. No words accompanied the gesture, but Edwin felt his shoulders relax as he finally allowed the dam to break.
He did not know how long it was before he was able to compose himself. When he finally stopped sobbing, he looked out of the window. The soft lights of the lamps outside the garden met his gaze, their orange glow half-blocked by the trees and hedgerows lining the garden’s edge. Edwin rubbed his face and sat upright, closing the diary on the desk in front of him and placing the quill next to the inkpot. He stood and dusted himself down. Time to try convincing the woman he loved to accept his help yet again. Not that he had high hopes right now, but he had to make the attempt anyway. Edwin blew out the candle he’d been writing by, swept out of his office and cast his Windwalk spell to catch Selene as she left the Wizard’s Tower.
Chrackle blinked slowly as he watched the Abouna leave his church from his perch on the tree just outside the window of Edwin’s office. The magpie ruffled his feathers and took off after the human man. Maybe this time his mistress would listen.

On His Terms
by Sarah Crompton
With his red cap pulled down over horn-rimmed glasses, Tobias Menzies walks into a London hotel with the wariness of a man who might just be recognized. It's his face that would catch him out, those deep lines running from eyes to chin. "He had those even as a young man," says his friend the theater director Rupert Goold. "It's like someone has taken a knife and carved them. And I feel those lines run deep inside him as well. He's grown into his face like a lot of actors do."
Menzies's smile is warm and his handshake firm, and though he lives not far from here in north London's Crouch End, he is dressed more as a country dweller than a man-about-town, in jeans and blue gilet zipped over a soft mustard-and-red-checked shirt. Only his Grenson trainers, white and red and with flashes of the same yellow, suggest he might belong to an artier milieu.
"I don't get recognized on any intrusive level, but it's not a part of [the job] that I love," he admits as we settle down to talk. "I like to watch people—I don't like them to watch me." I've asked him about the experience he's having at 49—that of a talent stepping into his prime. Blame it on The Crown, in which he played the second incarnation of Prince Philip across two seasons (a role that won him an Emmy), and last year's wry, acclaimed comedy You Hurt My Feelings, in which he starred opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("He's one of the most warm and present actors I've worked with," says its director, Nicole Holofcener). And now, he's appearing in two leading-man roles, as Edwin Stanton, Abraham Lincoln's secretary of war, in Apple TV+'s series Manhunt in March, and he's currently onstage in The Hunt, an adaptation of the 2012 Thomas Vinterberg film directed by Goold, playing at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn five years after its London premiere.
"I've got to be honest, I really liked it," Menzies says of the status he enjoyed in Manhunt. "Being in the engine room of it and part of the storytelling decisions." The series is part thriller and part history lesson, set over the 12 days following Lincoln's assassination in 1865 as Stanton attempts to track down the president's killer, John Wilkes Booth (it's based on historian James L. Swanson's 2006 bestseller). Episodes skip forward and backward, tracing the story of a tumultuous time and the ideological schisms that caused the Civil War and continued long after it. Stanton, a brilliant lawyer and strategist, is at the center of everything, clashing with Lincoln's successor, President Andrew Johnson, as he attempts to preserve the late president's legacy.
As gripping as any detective story, Manhunt addresses painful facts of America's past: "The implications of losing Lincoln and what that meant for African American people," says showrunner Monica Beletsky, who spent four years developing the project and who has followed Menzies's career since they overlapped as students at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London (she on a stint studying there from the US). "You could argue in a way that the Confederates won the peace," Menzies points out. "What is important about Monica making the show is that she is a person of color, and arguably the big fallout from Lincoln's assassination was that Reconstruction was lost until 100 years later and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Voting rights, land rights—they didn't happen. A lot of the things that African Americans have been fighting so hard for, for so long, were on Stanton's agenda."
Menzies studied carefully for the role ("He prepares months in advance," says Beletsky), working to find Stanton's voice and make his accent seem effortless, but also reading widely about the Civil War and its aftermath. Doris Kearns Goodwin's classic history Team of Rivals was a particularly rich source: "It takes you into this very disparate group Lincoln collected around him," Menzies says. "There was such a diversity of opinion and a lot of antagonism, but that was part of the power of it." Menzies also studied Gregory Peck's towering performance as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. "I was thinking of those archetypes that American literature and film are full of," he says. "Because it's such a whirlwind story with so many different characters floating through it—so you need a moral compass."
The key to the character became a combination of "stoicism and radicalism," Menzies says—and as an actor, he's exceptionally good at playing men who are fighting such opposing impulses, with strong currents of feeling running beneath an impassive surface. "He is one of those rare actors who does a lot with silence," Beletsky says. "He makes you believe you can feel what he is thinking, and he can do those things without saying a word."
Goold, who has directed Menzies many times onstage—including as Hamlet, as Valentine in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, and as Edgar in King Lear—thinks this quality has become stronger as Menzies has grown older. "He's got this wonderful physical expressiveness, but there's a slightly remote quality to him, I suppose," Goold says. "The quality I find really compelling in him is his committed curiosity. It's quite rare, especially for British actors, to keep their craft developing, to become more rigorous and investigative, and I think Tobias is an outlier on that."
Menzies is attracted to roles that conceal depths. "There is a certain magic about that. Part of the maths is that there is more on the inside than on the outside"
Their most recent collaboration is The Hunt, a haunting story in which a small-town teacher becomes ostracized when a six-year-old child accuses him of abuse. Menzies will be reprising his devastatingly observed performance from the play's 2019 London premiere. "When we put it on, we felt it to be about false accusations and the way that cancel culture was creating pariahs," says Goold. "But it is as much about someone who is shut out from their community because they choose to live apart. There is part of Tobias that is like that."
Menzies acknowledges that he is attracted to roles that conceal depths. "It's partly a taste thing," he says. "I like the kind of acting where I can't see the performance, I can't see how it is happening. There is a certain magic about that. Part of the maths is that there is more on the inside than on the outside, there's a kind of mystery there."
Menzies was born in London, his father a radio producer for the BBC, but after his parents separated when he was six, he lived with his mother, a drama teacher, and his brother in Kent. On their regular cultural outings, he was inspired by contemporary dance and the experimental theater companies he saw: Pina Bausch, Complicité, Shared Experience, Cheek by Jowl. "I was interested in companies that were making their own work," he says, "and I tried to go to train with [the radical movement coach] Jacques Lecoq in Paris; but I didn't have the money for that, so I went to RADA."
He never dreamed of being a famous actor. "My obsession as a kid was tennis," he says, with a grin. He was good enough to be on the fringes of the team for the county of Kent but gave it up when he realized he would never be truly first-class. He stopped playing for a long time. "Periodically I would pick up a racket and try to play a bit, and my game had completely fallen apart and it made me so angry. It was so frustrating. A few years ago I thought, Let's start again, do my 10,000 hours, and let's fix it." He approached the task with "monomaniacal" intent, working for a year on his forehand, and a year on his backhand, then adding his serve. Now he plays three times a week at a local tennis club, either with a coach or taking on other members in clay court matches. "I'm pretty obsessive about it," he says. "I just find it fascinating. It is such a mental game—a very interesting microcosm of one's brain."
His hero is Novak Djokovic. "He has less natural flair than Nadal or Federer but there is an epic quality to his tennis. He is able to endure and suffer, and so he can do it all in some way. There is a sort of purity to what he is doing. I think only if you have struggled with tennis do you realize that even though it looks plain, what's going on, the footwork, the ability to get to that ball and then hit it—it's just rather remarkable."
Menzies admits that his attitude to life mirrors his tennis. "I am probably on the methodical end of things, yeah," he says, with another low laugh. I ask about his film roles, which have been getting bigger and richer of late. He loved filming in New York with Holofcener on You Hurt My Feelings—"It was definitely bucket list"—and is currently appearing alongside Brad Pitt in the as-yet-untitled Formula 1 drama directed by Joseph Kosinski, which is filming scenes at Grand Prix around the world.
Before the actors' strike interrupted production, they had shot two scenes at Silverstone in the UK. "It was bonkers because we are in amongst everything else. So we did this scene on the grid before the race and the grid is live: real drivers, real cars, celebrities wandering around." He pauses, then adds: "It was like theater on steroids—really, really fun." He has nothing but praise for Pitt—"a lovely, lovely person, very collaborative, very nice to act with, and supersmart"—but working with him brought Menzies face-to-face with a level of fame that he doesn't aspire to. "How does he go out? It is very constraining to have that level of visibility."
Partly from a desire to preserve his anonymity as much as he can, Menzies took an early decision never to talk about his private life. "Is that old-fashioned of me?" he asks. "I'm going to stick to my guns. It's partly natural shyness on my part. But to be a bit more grandiose about it, the idea of celebrity moving into the arts and acting does have an effect on how we watch."
Through it all Menzies is genial and engaged, asking a lot of questions, yet there is something formal about him too. This is someone who is deeply serious about acting, pursuing projects that interest him and then immersing himself in them. I ask if being able to choose work of quality and interest is part of this new level of success, and Menzies says that it has come at a good time. "The question for me would have been whether as a younger person I would have handled it very well," he tells me. "I just think at some base level, it has taken me time to get really good." He laughs gently. "If I'd had a lot of exposure early on, I don't think I'd have been ready. I know I am a lot better now than I was 10 years ago. Acting keeps you very humble because you never quite know day-to-day. You can do all the work in the world and try the best you can, and sometimes it just lifts off and sometimes it doesn't."

Tobin’s grandpa, Rich was inducted into the hall of fame for tennis! He passed away in 2016.
Rich was inducted into the USTA New England Hall of Fame in 2007, and the family received the USTA Edwin Goodwin Tennis Family of the Year Award in 2009. Rich was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments on and off the court. His favorite saying to anyone who met him was: “All of my children and grandchildren play tennis.”

Alexis finally gets closure <3

(I don't think this is a tag game, but if you've got something you want to lay down the bones of go right ahead)

Edwin P. Goodwin House in Washington, D.C. Constructed in 1879 for insurance agent Edwin P. Goodwin by local architect Dillard B. Groff, this Queen Anne-style house built in the burgeoning Shaw neighborhood, later became the main classroom of Frelinghuysen University. The private, historically Black university, provided educational and vocational opportunities for Black students. It was named after Senator Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen, an outspoken advocate for the rights of Black Americans during Reconstruction.  The school was founded by Jesse and Rosetta Lawson and was the first school to offer extension and evening classes to Black students in the District of Columbia. The school endured a period of financial hardship in the early 1930s and lost its accreditation in 1937. In 1940, its name was changed to Frelinghuysen Group of Schools for Colored Working People. The school never recovered its accreditation. Despite no longer offering degrees, it continued to offer crucial education and social services to the Black community that were otherwise unavailable. Frelinghuysen closed its doors in 1964. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/edwin-p-goodwin-house

Syd Chaplin in The Better 'Ole (Charles Reisner, 1926) Cast: Syd Chaplin, Harold Goodwin, Jack Ackroyd, Edgar Kennedy, Charles K. Gerrard, Theodore Lorch, Doris Hill, Arthur Clayton. Screenplay: Darryl F. Zanuck, Charles Reisner, intertitles by Robert E. Hopkins, based on a play by Bruce Bairnsfather and Arthur Eliot. Cinematography: Edwin B. DuPar. Art direction: Ben Carré. Film editing: Ray Enright. Music: Maurice Baron. Slapstick comedy starring Charles Chaplin's older brother Syd Chaplin as "Old Bill," a British soldier in World War I. Based on a 1917 stage musical that had been filmed once before, The Better 'Ole was released in the Vitaphone sound-on-disc process with a synchronized music track and sound effects but no dialogue. The character of Old Bill was created by Bruce Bairnsfather in a newspaper cartoon published as a morale builder during the war. The film, which centers on Bill's involvement in exposing a German spy ring, tends to drag a bit as it works out some plot switches, and most of the physical comedy is old hat.

The Wise Man is a Fool
Summary: Edwin goes to have a chat with the Emissary to see about getting the paperwork to let Selene leave Toreguarde sorted out. A discussion ensues.
Words: 1,085 a little longer than I intended, but I couldn't make it any shorter

Notes: The original version of this was a lot longer, but I like the way this flows now. Written for the Flash Fiction Friday prompt 'A Fool's Quest'
Late afternoon sunshine filtered through the crack in the curtains, perfectly illuminating the chair directly opposite the thin, sallow-skinned man currently leaning on the huge oak desk. Edwin’s fingers twitched, itching to grab his holy symbol to Turn the undead monstrosity that was currently smiling at him. He tamped the instinct down. No. It would do neither he nor Selene any favours to offend the only man that could currently help.
“I must admit, it is a pleasure to finally get to meet you, Abouna.” the Emissary drawled, “I do trust that you’re settling in well?”
“I am, thank you. Though it has been something of a culture shock after living with dwarves for so long.” he admitted. The Emissary nodded, a somewhat more sympathetic expression gracing his narrow features,
“Yes, I can quite understand that.” he agreed, “What can I do for today, Abouna? From my understanding, most clerics prefer to avoid my presence.” he asked, his gaze flicking down to Edwin’s chest, where the other human’s holy symbol currently rested beneath his vestments, before returning to meet the other man’s gaze.
Edwin shifted uncomfortably, while it wasn’t exactly his place to do this, it wasn’t like Selene was able to do so herself. He cleared his throat and sat a little more upright,
“I believe you’ve already been made aware of the Grand Magus’ current ill health, so I’ll not mince words. I’ve come on behalf of Lady Frigidwake to request a leave of absence so that she may recover from her recent affliction in a place of peace and rest.” He stated, “I do not believe that staying in Toreguarde would be helpful in this regard.”
The Emissary’s eyes narrowed a little, but he quickly schooled his expression, simply cocking his head to one side,
“Of course, I will be happy to allow such a leave of absence. It does the city no good if one of the members of the Triumverate cannot adequately perform their duties.” he agreed. “However, I must ask, why do you believe that leaving Toreguarde is necessary in this instance?” he asked, “A reprieve from her duties, I can understand, but surely Lady Frigidwake would be better served staying in a place where she has access to medical care and people who can assist in her recovery?”
Edwin stifled his snort of disdain. While he was certain that the Emissary was perfectly aware of what had happened, it was clear that he wanted the cleric to be transparent. Well, if that was what he wanted,
“I ask because I believe that Lady Frigidwake would not be permitted to adequately rest by particular members of the Council.” he replied, “The Lord Chancellor was explicitly informed that Selene was to be left alone to rest, and yet he saw fit to barge into her office to demand a meeting anyway.” Edwin’s face fell into a grimace, “The stress of such a demand was enough to exacerbate Selene’s symptoms to the point that they became life-threatening.” Edwin paused, then glared at the Emissary, “Enough to actually kill her.”
The Emissary steepled his fingers and leaned on his desk,
“Ah. That particular point I was not aware of.” he said calmly, “I had, of course, been informed by a rather ticked off Lord Clayrmantle of the Lord Chancellor’s intrusion. However, he was unable to confirm whether or not the Lord Chancellor actually spoke with Lady Frigidwake. As I understand it, she was suffering from a case of Burnout, yes?”
Edwin’s eyes narrowed. The Emissary’s tone was pleasant enough, but Edwin had been playing this game long enough. He crossed his arms,
“Yes, I can confirm that Selene did contract Burnout, most likely from an item enclosed in the letter she received a few days ago. However, Selene does recall speaking with Lord Schreiber when he visited. I can ask her to make an official statement on the matter.”
The Emissary clucked his tongue,
“Unfortunately, Abouna, the Lord Chancellor has also approached me with regard to this matter and, according to him, he spoke only with Lady Frigidwake’s maid and Father Tristan.” He clasped his hands together, “Do you have any evidence to contradict the Lord Chancellor’s statement?” he asked.
Edwin grit his teeth and swallowed down his growl. He stiffly shook his head,
“There is no evidence other than Lady Frigidwake’s word.” he replied. The Emissary shook his head,
“Then unless evidence can be provided, I cannot make any sound judgement on the matter. After all, the allegations you’ve made are incredibly serious and have the potential to ruin the career of a man that has done so much good for Toreguarde.”
The wood of Edwin’s chair creaked ominously as he tried to reign in his flaring temper. He gripped the arms of his chair,
“My Lord Emissary, please –” the cleric was cut off by a raised hand,
“Abouna, that’s enough.” The Emissary growled, "Unless there is any evidence that the Lord Chancellor had anything to do directly with the Grand Magus’ death, then there is nothing I can do.” he repeated. Edwin flushed under his beard, the itch to stake the vampire in front of him stronger than ever.
“Fine.” He groused, “Am I to understand, then, that Selene is required to stay in Toreguarde?”
The Emissary waved a hand dismissively
“No. I will draft the paperwork necessary to allow her to leave the city for an extended break. While I cannot do anything about your concerns; I am aware of the general hostility between Lord Schreiber and Lady Frigidwake, and would rather see the Grand Magus fully recovered than being impeded in her efforts to do so.” he replied airily. Edwin pursed his lips, but nodded,
“Thank you. I will inform Lady Frigidwake of your decision at once. Excuse me.” Edwin rose from his seat, bowed briefly, then turned and walked out of the door before the urge to attack the man sitting opposite him grew too great.
As soon as Edwin was gone, the Emissary huffed an annoyed sigh and turned to the window. As useful as Schreiber was, the man and his cronies were slowly becoming more of a liability. Especially if the rumours about what was coming were true. The vampire shook his head. If neither the Grand Magus or the new Abouna had any hard evidence against him, then perhaps it was time to create a situation that would cause the man to err badly enough to cause his peers to doubt him.

Today is the 106th anniversary of the First Day of the Somme, the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army. On that day 20,000 British soldiers were killed, and 60,000 wounded. Among the dead that day were the following Rutland men: Edwin Absolon from South Luffenham Harry Cole of Langham Walter Gibson of Whissendine John Snodin of Uppingham Hugh Steele of Exton (who is NOT remembered on any war memorial in Exton but deserves to be as he lived his whole life there and who still has relatives in the area) Victor Terrell of Great Casterton Benjamin Robinson of Oakham School John Woodhall Marshall of Oakham School (who was awarded the Military Cross just six weeks before he died) I have come to Ayston to view the memorial to the brothers Frederick and John Goodwin and to Tom Pykett, all from this village – and who were all killed during the Battle of the Somme. Fantastic Four #116 (Goodwin/Buscema, Nov 1971). A double-length 10th anniversary extravaganza! Lee and Kirby have both left the Baxter Building, but Marvel’s First Family can still put on a show. With Reed under the Over-Mind’s control (and every other Marvel busy with other affairs), Sue appeals to an unlikely ally — Doctor Doom! Hilariously, the Over-Mind hears Doom declare his arrival and goes, “…is that your name or a threat? Whatever.”

Thanks for the tag, @spacetimewraithwrites <3
I've grabbed these from What Alexis Did Next. CW: Romance, mild NSFW
Part
"It took you nearly two weeks to find me? I expected better from my champions." I glanced to see a slight smile playing on [Storri's] lips. "Oh don't start, darling," I said good-naturedly, and gave a tired sigh as I leant against him. "This is a bloody big place, and it wasn't you that we were after remember? My main objective was the obliteration of the Demonic Three. Myurr was the second objective, and finally, your rescue if I had enough time." I gave him a peck on the cheek. "Luckily for you, the second and third objectives were accomplished more easily than I had anticipated." "Aye, it's part one I'm now worried about." "Hurm?" I asked, from where I was resting my eyes, leant against his faint warmth.
Pain
"We should head back," I said and turned away from the shrine. I'd taken a few steps before noticing he was still looking at the shrine, forehead creased. "Alexis, may I make a request of you?" Edwin asked, his eyes still fixed on the shrine. "I guess?" "When you're down there... don't give up." He paused and huffed, labouring for words. "It doesn't have to be one final hurrah." He bowed his head. "Think about coming home?" He looked at me, and the pain and fear in his expression felt like a physical blow. I wobbled, my resolve faltering. The metaphorical defences I'd so carefully constructed bean to crumble just a little bit. I bit my lip and took a step back. The moment lengthened. I looked away. "We need to be getting back," I said again, voice thick in my throat, and walked away. Behind me, I heard him sigh and murmur, "At least no one can say I didn't try."
Pile
"Ah well then, Madame, it behoves me to mention that someone has led you astray," Tarrem said. "Wyrmholm is not within the Reaches, but just outside of it. Here - better to point it out." So saying the proprietor riffled through his maps, finally drawing a battered sheet of parchment from the pile and laid it out for me to see. It detailed the North-Western corner of Allansia - a portion sandwiched between the Icefinger Mountains to the north, the River Kok to the south, and stopped at Fang to the East. Wyrmholm was marked a few days ride from the coast, inside a ring of mountains that reached down from the Icefinger range.
Peel
"Ach, daher ê du," said an older female rising from her seat and coming towards us. She took the King's arm and give him a kiss on the cheek before leading him to his seat, nattering away. Garni peeled away to speak to one of the footmen lined against the wall, before taking her place at the King's left hand, as a chair was brought and I was squished between two young males at the further end of the table. I had no idea what anyone was saying - aside from the odd word, my grasp of the dwarvish language was limited to curses Ivan uttered - but they all chatted amicably enough, and I was happy to remain ignored while I munched on roast venison.
Pinch (mild NSFW)
"It's been a wee while since I had a lass tearin' at me clothes," [Storri] said. I looked up. "This isn't a-" I started, but found his mouth on mine. I should have been angry at him for taking advantage of the moment. I should have pulled away, remembering our peril, but all sense fled. His lips were like a ripe plum - soft and plump, sweetened with mead. Strong, warm hands slid along my back, drawing us closer. I melted into his embrace, as one hand drifted down to cup a buttock, the other ruching my shirt. His hand on my bare skin sent electric thrills dancing along my waist, and I gasped into his mouth. His answering smile was more felt than seen, and I found myself returning the kiss with fervour. Time stopped. Nothing mattered. Only the feel of my lips on his, the heat of his chest against mine, the silken tresses under my fingers and his broad hands dancing lighting along my skin.
His dwarfhood rose against me, but there was also a sharp, instant prickling across my shoulders. I wanted to answer that rise, but the pickling became pinching on my left arm. I pulled back, and Storri took that as an invitation to run kisses down my neck, as I turned my head. A scuff of pebbles. A glint in the dark. This was all the warning I got.
Plain
"Well..." I guess I was a bit cooler than I would like, having had no activity to keep me warm. "I suppose a little," I said. "Why don't you come inside for a bit then? To the stateroom, if it please you?" [Captain Goodwin] asked. "It's not very often we get paying passengers from beyond the Bay of Corpses. Would you come share news of the Pagan Plains?" I paused, suspicious, wondering why he would want to get me inside, and then I stopped myself. He invited me inside because the deck was chilly, and he wanted to chat and maybe have a drink with someone not of his crew. There was nothing threatening about this big cheery man, and if there was I had my weapons on me; he had not seemed bothered to take them off me, or insist they were left in my cabin. "Of course, it would be my pleasure," I said smiling, feeling foolish.
