Info for writer in Thai series fandom: More language thingy
Swear words and metaphor
*Some words may have more meaning than what I mention.
ไอ้ Ai and อี ee = words to be added in front of other words (a name or swear word), showing contempt or closeness (in a rude way).
Ai is masculine and ee is feminine, but nobody actually cares at this point.
เหี้ย hia or เชี่ย shia = Varanus salvator
These two words are the same. Hia is an original, and shia is a word that is born from distorting the voice in order to reduce vulgarity. It's kind of like referring to an f-word with any other word starting with f. We also used many other words that mean "Varanus salvator" as a sensor version of the "hia" swear word. little crocodile or chicken eater, for example.
They can also be used to empathize by adding to the end one or two times, for example, "super cool" would be "cool hia hia".
Tbh, whenever I read in English and see the word "hia," I always think of this word before a word that means "older brother." And to make it worse, the placement of both of them in the sentence can be exactly the same. Sometimes it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize the writer intended it to be an older brother.
สารเลว saraleo = miscreant, bastard, swinish, vile, caitiff, rascally
If you are 2gether fan, this is the word Tine calls Sarawat.
There are many similar words, such as
rayam-ระยำ-wicked, disgusting, inauspicious
chanrai-จัญไร-vile, unfortunate, ruined, crush
chatchua-ชาติชั่ว-lowlife
เสือก sueak = to meddle in matters that are not their own; to meddle in other people's affairs
ห่า har = infectious disease (cholera), pestilential disease (plague), and the evil spirit responsible for disease epidemics.
สัตว์ sus =animal
พ่อง pong=your father
แม่ง maeng =your mother
They are shorten from por(father)/mae(mother) mung(you)
ดอกทอง dok thong=whore
This word sounds like a golden flower, but it's just a coincidence as far as I know.
ส้นตีน son teen=heel=lowest point of your body
ควย kyua=cock
หี hee=vagina
สันดาน san dan=in-born traits
as in bad inborn traits. The "bad" is omitted on the assumption that everyone understands.
ตอแหล tor lear=liar, fake
-->sato (สตอ-Crudia chrysantha Schum)-->strawberry
เปรต pret=The hungry ghost, frequently described as a very tall monster with a needle-sized mouth. = tall(negative meaning) or a bad person
อ้อย oi=suger cane=อ่อย oi=attempt to entice something or someone to be caught (typically used by a woman seducing a man).
For example, a cane truck has overturned here.=Someone here is trying really hard to seduce someone.
งิ้ว ngiw=bombax anceps (thorn-covered tree)
In the story, when sinners go to hell, the adulterer must climb this tree naked.
Mark from Love Mechanics asks on Facebook how hurtful it would be to climb a ngiw tree after having sex with Vee, implying that he is at least interested in someone who is not single.
Gold fish=short memory
Tiger=flirtatious person who is good at getting who they want (typically a guy)
A tiger with faded stripes=old tiger=someone who used to be flirtatious but is no longer.
Dog can be alot of things depent on the context but usually a bad things.
"Dog with a rotten head" means someone nobody wants to get close to or interact with.
If someone looks just like a dog, that means their current state is bad. Too drunk = like a dog. Crying too much = like a dog.
Giving someone dog food means making someone, usually your friends, a dog. Used when you complain about your love life to someone, ask them for advice and they tell you to leave your current partner since the partner is being awful to you, you say so! Then you turn around and reconcile with your partner. So now your friend is a bad guy whom your partner won't want you to associate with anymore because they incite you to be at odd witn your partner.
Temple's dog = low status, usually used for a low-status man who likes a high-status woman who would be called ดอกฟ้า(dokfha) which translates directly to "sky flower." Use something like, "You are a temple's dog yet want to pluck a sky flower, you should know your place!"
A dog that serves someone means someone who only cares about serving their boss (who is a bad person) and nothing else, like morals or other people. A lackey
Bird(quite a new slang) = Can't get what you want, typically means someone you want as a lover.
Phonix = immortal bird = repeatedly failing to get what you want *We do use phonix as a poetic expression too, not just for this meaning.
Buffalo = idiot/fool.
You can say A is putting horns on B when A is cheating on B; this means A makes B an idiot for believing in A.
When you fail your exam, you might say that these days you eat grass instead of rice (like a buffalo).
There is a saying that goes like this: "One who remembers when they get hurt (and leaves or does something to not get hurt again) is a human; one who is willing to endure it is a buffalo." If you put up with something you shouldn't, you are a buffalo.
Pig
fat
weak/easy to win against
Fox
Cunning
Sedusing
catfish,termite=ugly
rhinoceros=Someone who tries to steal someone else's lover or just acts inappropriately in general according to the traditional feminine standard. Originally, it was only used to call women, but it is no longer the case.
barking deer=gay man
gibbon=woman
It was originally used by trans women to refer to cis women. can be seen as rude, but like many other words, many people don't actually take offense if it is used playfully. These two words, "barking deer" and "gibbon," are usually used together.
The reason why a character does not always know information stated in the subtitle
Gender of someone
The Thai language, for the most part, is gender-neutral. The she or he in the English subtitle usually has to be chosen by the translator.
Who/what the speaker is talking to/about
Many times, sentence structures in spoken language won't require a subject or object. I guess when that gets translated, it looks weird, so the translator has to pick something to add in. In a lot of situations where I am not sure how to address my interlocutor, I can simply avoid doing it, but when I'm writing in English like this, I have to pick something, right?
When
There are no tenses in Thai the way there are in English. We have words for determining whether something happened in the past, present, or future, but you can say something without using any of those and it will be just fine.
Rice
When someone asks if someone has eaten rice(ข้าว-khao) yet, the word rice usually means meal/food and not strictly rice. The word rice can mean food in general a lot of the time.
Polite words
There are a lot of words that mean the exact same thing but have a different degree of politeness. You may already have noticed it with the way there are so many words that mean you or I. You may also notice it when you watch alot of any Thai series. Like, how when a character says "eat" in the subtitle, there are some varied sounds, such as daek(แดก-rude), kin(กิน-common), than(ทาน-a bit more polite-shorten from rapprathan), rapprathan(รับประทาน-polite).
Meaning of polysyllabic words
Some polysyllabic words, when each syllable is separated, still have a meaning, but their meaning may not be consistent with the meaning of that polysyllabic word. So even when you recognize the meaning of each syllable, the meaning of the polysyllabic word you deduce from it may not be correct. I mean, if we look deeper, we should be able to make it make sense, but yeah.
For example, the word "witch" in Thai is mae mod(แม่มด). Mae means mother or something you can used to indicate that a word it is in refers to a woman and Mod means ant when it's a separate word, but when combined, they mean witch. Or for the word whose meaning is more similar to the words used to create it, the word khun nhu(คุณหนู), which means "young master/mistress." used for address the child of the boss, when sperate khun is a prefix to show politeness or respect, and nhu means mice or a word used for calling children. You can see that while some of the single-syllabic words are arguably related to the meaning of the polysyllabic word, some aint so much.
I hope this explanation doesn't make you more confused.😅 But if it is, do tell me. I will try to do better.
Thai alphabet
Our letters are named after words they used to spell. Like, both letters ญ and ย sound the same(yor), but the word woman (หญิง-ying) uses letter ญ and the word giant (ยักษ์-yak) uses letter ย, so letter ญ is named yor ying and letter ย is named yor yak.
Think of it like if A's full name is "A apple".

Explanation for the English speakers: it's a popular Polish meme format. It's a Facebook status update saying "In a relationship with ...", the dialogue goes: Person 1: wtf? Person 2: sorry, I clicked something and don't know what's this
ks is an abbreviation of "ksiądz", a priest in Polish, it's used before the priest's name, like mr or mrs

Thank you @leliesblou for tagging us
Last song: English Folk Song Suite by Vaughan Williams and It's Not Enough by The Who - Both my alarms went off at half past 8 this morning and I looked Very Cool (deeply uncool) on the train as I tried to shut them up.
Currently watching: Apart from the constant loop of Miss Fisher, it's been Only Connect and University Challenge.
Three ships: Jack/Phryne, Mycroft/Lestrade, Inquisitor/Sera
Favourite colour: Pink
Currently consuming: Well, I just had a waffle, chocolate spread and marshmallow sandwich, but now I'm drinking palma violet flavour squash.
First ship: Do I admit to the many, many OC ships I had for my baby fandoms? Let's go with 'no' and pretend it was Jack/Ianto.
Relationship status: Facebook, AO3 and now Tumblr official with @glamorouspixels. They have played Mario Kart with my mum, which is certainly some kind of relationship stage.
Last movie: Genuinely can't remember, but it may well have been Muppet Treasure Island.
Currently working on: The next chapter of Following On, and keeping my eyes open. Tagging, with no pressure, @kanna-ophelia, @jonairadreaming, @hymnsandarias, @thesilversun, @ewebie and @avoteforme

Note
this is my inquiry to know what you think the general idea at the high school is during these dasey pranks:
- "you're wearing my shirt!" (shit eating grin)
- the mary and percy shelley... debacle of saving derek's English grade
- the "almost flunked out of spanish class bc i'm pranking casey instead of doing my work. it's the priority" shitshow
- pranking the football team so incessantly he almost gets his face pummelled in but wait there's his wife obnoxious stepsister
- organizing a protest in twelve hours to not get him expelled with a band routine!!
Ohhhhh gosh. Now *there* is a question. What DO I think the other students thought about this?????
I think at first it's confusion; like, the Shelley thing isn't that bad (although I am STILL not over the fact that they did their project on an artist couple that had their first time on her mother's grave????) And, yeah, it's kinda weird that Derek is defending her about the grub thing, but sometimes Ven is just odd, ya know? Hockey players, amiright or amiright?
BUT. I think for any student who is paying attention they go from, "What the actual hell is up with them???" to a quiet and exhausted resignation. "Oh. Yeah. That's just Ven and Casey. They're... They're wack, man. No, they're not dating; she's with Max and he's dating some older girl -- no, I *know* she just pulled him into the girl's bathroom; she'll do that another three times this month. Yeah. Yeah, nah, man, just... Just don't think about it."
I thiiiiiink there's definitely some rumours going around that they're secretly sleeping with each other ("aren't they family?" / "Yeah, STEPsiblings." / "Ohmigod, like a porno???") but these get really confusing when Casey dates Max and then Truman, and as Derek keeps going on first dates with other girls (which is probably why Derek keeps doing this because he's aware of the rumours and just... Can't handle them). Because no one believes Casey is cool enough to be cheating on her boyfriend; and honestly, no one thinks Derek would be willing to sleep with someone who's sleeping with the football captain (everyone knows how Derek feels about the football team). So then... Maybe it's just... Them being freaks?????
Man, I honestly don't know. Imagine a group of nerds trying to calculate the next insanity of Dasey, but even they are surprised by Casey standing up to The Fridge, toe to toe, and making him back up. Imagine teachers talking in the lounge about, well, no one likes to see a student get expelled, but Derek Venturi had it coming; and only Paul not being surprised by Casey's saviour act. He just drinks his coffee the next morning and tries to keep his grin to himself.
They get talked about a LOT but no one really know what the hell is up with them, and the teachers respect Casey too much to gossip about her in a mean way, and Derek is too popular to get talked too poorly, but. But. When their Facebook status changes to "in a relationship" and then "married"... There is kind of a huge wave of "Ohhhhhhhhhh;" that goes through anyone who had to watch them.

Fandom Shipping Polls - Yamato Ishida Shipping Analysis (Poll I + Poll II)
As pointed out in the main post, every single Chosen Child will get their individual analysis post to check on the status of the current popularity of their ships. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at Yamato, shall we!
The overall results / spreadsheet
Disclaimer: As the “Someone from 01/02″ and “Others” options from poll 1 and the “Someone from 01/02″ option from poll 2 have been excluded from the final analysis due to redundancy reasons and all results were culminated in another “final count”, the results will not be 1:1 to what the polls look like:
Tumblr media
Overall votes: 116 (approx. 91 in sum after the exclusion), the main poll got 84 votes, the secondary poll got 32 votes.
The “Others” choice in the main poll received 6% (approx. 5 votes) and 0% (0 votes) in the secondary poll. The comments/tags did not specify any preferences here (aside from characters that were already part of the main choices).
Ship Analysis
1st place: Taichi (37%) led the poll from the beginning and was, at no point in time, threatened to be surpassed by any other choice. As mentioned in Taichi’s analysis already, Taiyama/Taito has always been going strong and is a very popular choice for both parties. The ship is, not only in fandom but also in canon, a relationship that is highly focused on in terms of how they clash, but also complement, support and make each other better - which is also why there are tons of official promotional art that could have been used for the graphic! Taichi is Yamato’s (development) foil for a reason and the way their dynamics are being presented make them an appealing choice for one another.
2nd place: Similarly to Taichi, Sora (28%) has sat comfortably in second place throughout the entire voting period. Which shouldn’t be surprising either, as Sorato is one of the very few confirmed canon couples in the series to end up with each other - even if their screentime is severely surpassed by Taiyama, which may explain the discrepancy in the votes.
3rd place: Likewise, the third winner never really had to fear being overthrown; Jou’s votes (17%) picked up only slowly throughout the voting period, but seeing how Joumato has gained more attention on Twitter lately, it is no surprise to see him here - as several media forms have focused on their relationship (for example the novels, the stageplay - and of course the episode that actually activated the Crest of Friendship)
Honorary mentions: Since Yamato’s polls have not received as many votes as Taichi’s (and the results are also being very clear in terms of who gets favoured), there aren’t many other choices to really point out. No other option surpassed the 10% mark after all, but Daisuke (7%) and Jun (5%) may be singled out at this point; the Motomiya siblings have actually ruled over the secondary poll (aside from the “Someone from poll 1″ choice) after all! With only 4%, Mimi also joins the squad, even if Mimato appears to be a much more popular ship in other internet spheres (such as Instagram or Facebook).
“The 1 vote squad”: This space is reserved for Ken (1%) - and Meiko (2%), who got 2 votes.
“0 votes go to...”: This group will be interesting to look at if we take a glance at the reversed results, but let’s just list them for now: Koushiro, Hikari, Miyako, Iori and Menoa.
Annotations: Takeru was automatically excluded as a choice up front. Yamakeru does not seem to be a wide-spread choice in English speaking fandoms, even if a look at Japanese centric spaces may suggest that it’s fairly popular there.
What did the other polls say?
Yamato is one of the characters who hasn’t won any other poll - but did come in second for Taichi (21%), Sora (31%) and Jou (17%), thus mirroring his own results at least to a certain degree. This underlines once more how clear the preferences appear to be in his case.
He also came in as third choice for Meiko (13%).
He was generally a niche choice for several characters, such as Mimi (6%), Ken (2%), Daisuke (1%) - and Hikari (4%), who shall be pointed out in particular here, as she received 0 votes in Yamato’s own poll, but actually had 4 people vote for him in her poll.
He received 0 votes in the polls for Miyako, Iori - and Koushiro, making this the first poll where neither party received a vote, thus having nobody pick Yamashiro as viable option.
Notable additions / comments / thoughts
As mentioned above, his polls did not receive as much attention as Taichi’s, thus, I really hope to reach a wider audience if I choose to repeat the polls once the fandom is not as quiet as it is right now.
The three winning pairs have never really been threatened, thus showing that the parts of the fandom that participated in the voting can agree on who they see as viable options for Yamato - and if we look at canon evidence, Taichi, Sora and Jou are likely to provide the most consistent results.
There were some niche choices that are very interesting to look at - the Motomiya siblings really seem to have left an impact in 02. Meiko and Ken did not receive a lot of votes, but people might still think fondly of them because of their anime interactions. Last but not least, Mimi and Hikari did gather some attention for their respective fandom corners. Aside from that, Yamato’s more aloof attitude in the series (and focus on the characters mentioned above) may have make it harder to see his as viable option for other characters.
The comments in the tags have only referred to Taichi overall, so the “Others” option did not reveal any other potentially preferred suitors. This leaves room for speculation, but usually, the option is reserved for OC ships or for when people prefer to not ship a character at all (which will definitely be a future option to include as well!)

Massive US style “the faggots and trannies are grooming the kids” type backlash against queer people in Iceland at the moment, right about when we’re also having a backlash against immigrants and refugees as well. Both types of hatred fuelled heavily by the former prime minister as well (and I’m fairly certain it was him that did a little anti trans meeting on Pride but fuck knows tbh because this country pretty much refuses to do English language news that’s not aimed at tourists).
And I’m sat here like aight I’m stuck in this country indefinitely cause I can’t go back to the UK ever because I’m trans and not stupid enough to do that to myself, but also not really able to go anywhere other than Iceland because Brexit. Also stuck in a town full people who are of the “wouldn’t have actively joined the nazis but wouldn’t have minded too much when they took power” variety. Shitton of people I know who were nice to me back in my last town posting I’m not a homophobe but the gays are teaching bdsm to kids” type Facebook statuses and/or commenting “this is just attention seeking, there’s no backlash” on any vaguely supportive Facebook status.
And honestly like. Where would I even move to if I did still have freedom of movement? Whole world is going hardcore transphobic these days and pretty much nowhere is a good place to be an immigrant either.
Anyway now I have to shlep through a fucking management conference that’s entirely in Icelandic, sitting there wondering who of my coworkers is a bigot, and being quite certain based on other behaviour that if my boss knew I was trans he’d be even worse to me than he already is.
Fucking hell I’m tired.

(Reuters) -Microsoft researchers said on Thursday they found what they believe is a network of fake, Chinese-controlled social media accounts seeking to influence U.S. voters by using artificial intelligence.
A Chinese embassy spokesperson in Washington said that accusations of China using AI to create fake social media accounts were "full of prejudice and malicious speculation" and that China advocates for the safe use of AI.
In a new research report, Microsoft said the social media accounts were part of a suspected Chinese information operation. The campaign bore similarities to activity which the U.S. Department of Justice has attributed to "an elite group within (China's) Ministry of Public Security," Microsoft said.
The researchers did not specify which social media platforms were affected, but screenshots in their report showed posts from what appeared to be Facebook and Twitter, now known as X.
The report highlights a fraught social media environment as Americans prepare for the 2024 presidential election.
The U.S. government has accused Russia of meddling in the 2016 election with a covert social media campaign and has warned of subsequent efforts by China, Russia and Iran to influence voters.
The report provided limited examples of the recent activity and did not explain in detail how researchers attributed the posts to China.
A Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters that the company's researcher used a "multifaceted attribution model," which relies on "technical evidence, behavioral evidence and contextual evidence."
The campaign began using generative artificial intelligence technology in about March 2023 to create politically charged content in English and "mimic U.S. voters," Microsoft said.
Generative AI can create images, text and other media from scratch.
The new content is much more "eye-catching than the awkward visuals used in previous campaigns by Chinese nation-state actors, which relied on digital drawings, stock photo collages, and other manual graphic designs," the researchers wrote.
The paper cited an example of one AI-generated image, which Microsoft said came from a Chinese account, that depicts the Statue of Liberty holding an assault rifle with the caption: "Everything is being thrown away. THE GODDESS OF VIOLENCE."
The Microsoft spokesperson said the identified accounts had attempted to appear American by listing their public location as within the United States, posting American political slogans, and sharing hashtags relating to domestic political issues.

Introducing: Koei Warriors Retrospective - the new Koei Warriors Rant Series (1000th Post Special)
Tumblr media
In 2014, I began the Koei Warriors Rant Series in an effort to speculate the reason why Koei Tecmo weren't localising their games with English dubbing and hopefully find or get an official response. Two years later, this was followed by the Dub Logistics series in an attempt to broaden it to the wider scope of the Japanese gaming industry and English Dubbed Game News, a Facebook page intended as a counter to the Undub page informing fans about the localisation status of Japanese games.
For a number of years after that, I was calling out the duplicity of Koei Tecmo's PR and the intolerance of their fanbase and other non-English dub fans. In 2018-19, I ended my English dub rants, left the Koei Tecmo fanbase and deactivated EDGN after the dishonourable disgrace that was Dynasty Warriors 9. Then, when the pandemic happened in 2020, I decided to start indulging my guilty pleasure of playing my favourite hack-and-slash games from the company that made subpar localisations of those games despite knowing what they did and feeling bitter (yet somehow vindicated) over it.
In late 2021, I built a gaming PC and moved my games from my laptop (which was faster than my old PC) to it. At the start of 2022, I learnt that PS3 emulation was a thing and I decided that I had no excuse to not play the Koei Warriors games released for the PS3, with most of those releases not receiving PC ports. I also went on to play the newer PS4 games through their PC ports and went back to the older games on the PS2 and PSP (the latter I was already doing on my old PC during the preceding years).
Around the same time, I realised that in all the years I had been ranting about English dubs and localisation in Koei Warriors games and Japanese games in general, there was one thing I never did; I never really talked about the games themselves. As I played through the games, I had opinions about certain mechanics and issues with certain aspects of the games outside of localisation, some that fans know and some that fans may not know. So let's change that.
After being delayed by two years due to various factors, I am proud to announce the relaunch of the Koei Warriors Rant Series in a new format called Koei Warriors Retrospective. In each instalment of this new series I'll be talking about each generation of Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and Warriors Orochi games along with their expansions and spin-offs on consoles, handhelds and PC (mobile games will not be covered). I'll also look into where Koei Tecmo went wrong for the Warriors games to be in the current state they're in. In a way, it's like WildcatWeather's "I Played EVERY Warriors Game" series, but more in depth, particularly with games that were exclusive to Japan where WildcatWeather only touched on them in his videos (as his focus was only on games released in the West).
Some things to note here - I will be reviewing Warriors All-Stars at some point, but there are some games that I will be unable to properly review for various reasons that I will mention during the series:
Jan Sangoku Musou/Dynasty Warriors Mahjong (雀・三國無双)
Dynasty Warriors Online (真・三國無双 Online)
Samurai Warriors Katana (戦国無双 KATANA)
Dynasty Warriors Next (真・三國無双 NEXT)
In addition, I have also prepared non-retrospective material that will be posted gradually. Aside from the list of recycled maps from DW6 being used in DW7, there are two other series coming up, namely Warriors Orochi: The Recollective Redux (a redo of the 2015 series) and the Dynasty Warriors Weapon Moveset Power Rankings (a review of the weapon movesets in DW7 and DW8). Other plans are also in the works as well, but for now, enjoy the lineup as I commemorate 20 years of me playing Dynasty Warriors games and 10 years of the Koei Warriors Rant Series.

‘Yugi/Yami, Sensei, and Kaiba. So Dan and I were performing one of our Yu-Gi-Oh! live duels and we were told Sensei wanted to meet us. It was exciting he was there to watch the event. I asked what the protocol would be. Would we shake hands, bow, could we speak? I mean he is the creator of the show! Anyway, we were told to “play it by ear and follow his lead”. After we got the bows and awkward “normal” photos out of the way I then asked him “Hey, do you want to do an Anime pose with us like we do with the fans?” The translator’s eyes popped wide open and quietly told Sensei. He smiled and said “YES!” Here is the infamous photo. Not only the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! But like all of us, a fan. RIP. Love, Kaiba.’

[chasingghosts @ bzoink]
Are you the sort of person who can nap or sleep anywhere, anytime? Not usually, but lately, yes. I'm so tired since I haven't been getting much sleep between sick kiddos and pregnancy-related insomnia.
Do you feel like you have unfinished business with anyone? Yeah, I guess so.
Have you ever been to the Statue of Liberty? I have not. What are some of your favourite sitcoms? Full House is definitely one of my favorites.
Do you talk to your Uber/taxi driver?  I haven't really used Uber or a taxi really.
Have you ever taken an Uber pool? Did you talk to the other passengers?  I have not.
How cold does it get in winter where you live?   It gets down to the negatives.
Do you like to layer when you dress up?   When dressing up? No. I usually dress in layers during fall/winter though.
Will you ever call it X, or will you always call it Twitter?  I just call it Twitter. I just don't think about it being called anything else - I don't use.
Are you a fast walker? Usually.
Have you ever skated on a frozen lake? Would you want to?  I have not, and I would not want to. I would be too scared.
Were you susceptible to peer pressure as a teenager?  I guess a little but nothing too problematic or crazy.
Who did you last go to the cinema with?  I don't remember when I last went, let alone who I went with.
Do you have any cheese in your fridge right now? We always have cheese in our fridge.
Do you wear earrings every day?  I basically never wear them.
What colour was the last couch you sat on?  Gray-ish.
Do you think your house is too small, too big or just right?  For the number of people that currently live in it, it is way too small. But my parents, siblings, and probably grandparents will be moving out sometime this summer (supposedly) and it will be significantly better. Which is great since we're adding another human to our not-so-little family.
Would you rather eat mashed potatoes or hash browns?  Mashed potatoes. I'm not really a huge fan of hash browns.
What website do you spend the most time on?  Facebook. Or my school's website.
Have you ever had a Tamagotchi? Yes. I used to love those.
Who was the last person you avoided?  Jason when I saw him at Walmart the other weekend.

CRONOS IN LEOPARD PRINT MAKES THIS PHOTOSHOOT -- THE UK PUNK INFLUENCE ON PROTO-THRASH IS KEY!
PIC INFO: Mega spotlight on English extreme metal/NWOBHM band VENOM, photographed in a graveyard during the band's "Welcome to Hell" era, c. early '80s/1981. 📸: Ross Halfin.
"After witnessing the SEX PISTOLS and the Bromley Contingent’s notoriously foul-mouthed run in with Bill Grundy on the "Today" show in the December of 1976, the 13-year-old [Conrad] Lant became radicalised -- he knew exactly what he wanted to do.
Luckily for him a switched on music teacher would let him and a couple of other mates skip maths and chemistry lessons so they could learn to play BEATLES, STATUS QUO and AC/DC numbers on the guitar instead.
This led to the high school outfit Album Graecum who blasted out ragged hyperspeed covers of BOWIE and T-REX numbers but with a pronounced filter: that of the angry teenage punk fan: "We played "Ride A White Swan"... but five times too fast!""

Personnel File 4: Titus Drautos
While technically if we continue to go alphabetically by first name, Drautos should appear later, he is referred to more often as Drautos and so we're doing him next. :P Sorry for the late posting; there were too many rabbit holes that caught us up, especially regarding his name. *grumble grumble* As always, pictures are courtesy of @capsource, who is a blessing.
Titus Drautos
From the Facebook blurb:
Tumblr media
Name: Titus - Latin: the name of the co-ruler of Rome with Romulus, the Sabine (native tribe) king Titus Tatius, thereafter a common Roman name: an Emperor known for his martial skill (including the destruction of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem); Titus Andronicus, a fictional Shakespearean character who commits terrible acts of revenge; a fictional tyrant with good intentions; and many others. WARNING: this is a tvtropes-level time suck. Drautos - ??? - This one is harder. Google translate tells us it means insurance in Lithuanian, though I think we can probably disregard that one. It could be many words that have been Latinized into a name by adding "-os" to the end, including English sources like draught or drought, or Greek ones like dragon, drao - a verb for action that also gives us the term drama, or drax - a handful. Using the Japanese spelling, it could also be Doratos, meaning “of a spear or shaft of wood”. Germanic/Norse sources have a similar word draugr that can mean both the undead creature we’re most familiar with through games and stories but also a trunk of a tree or a fighting man. Following that back to older roots, we get the reconstructed words dreugana which means to deceive or a retainer (which is appropriate) and druhtiz which means a band of retainers, a troupe. Derived from those, and somehow even more on topic, is the Old Norse drótt which means a household, a people, or the group of bodyguards of a king and all sorts of other fun ideas for sources. Do I think Square thought this hard? Probably not. Is it fun anyway? Yes.
Equipment: Drautos is one of the most colorful people we see in Insomnia, with his red leather jacket and panels. (As Drautos he uses black and red with purple and silver highlights, and as Glauca silver and purple with black and silver highlights). In some ways, his look is reminiscent of Genesis from FFVII, albeit played much more seriously.
His uniform seems to be a combination of the Kingsglaive uniforms - the cuffs around the wrists and upper thigh, identical boots, what looks to be the base of a hood in his wide inner collar, the symbol down the front (though whether he wears it in honor of his glaives or they of him is a bit of a chicken and egg debate, and we don’t see that long version on the Royal Guards or the Kingsglaive after the fall, as best I can tell) - and the common markers of status among Insomnian/Lucian elites - the high collar (though very exaggerated in his case), the asymmetric longer left sleeves, the hint at longer robes via the skirt panels – and his own personal style - the overlapping jacket front (and the requisite Square fashion zipper, which is how you know he’s a main character), the mail and reinforced leather piece over his shoulders, and the braids connecting his shoulders and mail sleeves.
Tumblr media
His necklaces and medals have the feeling of formal awards, though we see literally no one else wearing them. In the field, he wears the symbol of the Kingsglaive on his many necklaces, though this is replaced by some sort of cross-like medal when he dresses up; this, with the addition of the other medals somehow attached to his jacket, is the only difference between his field and formal uniforms. (He wears the field uniform again during the fall of Insomnia; I guess he had time to remove the medals and change the necklace when he was missing during the panic over Luna)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only comparison with Drautos’s medals are the ones won for Chocobo racing, though the medallion portion of those appears flatter and simpler. The chains and braids might have a parallel in the pair that cross Nyx’s chest, though his is worn much differently that Drautos’.
The leather shoulder piece almost resembles the leather and reinforced collar of Nyx’s field uniform, but is still much larger and differently shaped. The pattern inside the high collar almost appears to match the dickies from the Luche-style uniforms.
Tumblr media
When he is driving in Noctis's car with Nyx, he appears to have ditched both the high collar (which seems smart, just for the peripheral vision) and the shoulder piece, mail, oversleeves, shoulder braids, and medals. I wonder if this is why he can tell Nyx to drop the formalities – he’s “out of uniform”. [[NB: unlike the bros, Drautos enforces seatbelts in the car]]
He has a classical western straight-edged sword belted at his side, just as his glaives carry theirs sheathed on their persons rather than in magical storage as Clarus and Cor do. Unfortunately, he never uses this sword in the movie.
ETA: Drautos also wears his sword on his right hip, implying he is left-handed, while Glauca wields his sword in his right hand or with both. As we never see Drautos as Drautos use his sword, which hand is actually dominant or if he is ambidextrous is unknown.
Tumblr media
He also, unlike most of the glaives, has an actual cell phone rather than ear pieces.
Background: Drautos is from Cavaugh, the island where Insomnia sits, but not actually from Insomnia. His village is destroyed about 30 years ago during the war, and then he is taken in by Regis. Despite this closeness, Cor and Noctis both refer to him as Drautos rather than Titus in the audio drama and opening scene respectively, which implies a sort of distance, but he is trusted implicitly by them all. He clearly resents the wall being withdrawn by Mors and how Regis is running the fight (“For the honor of my home, I fought and killed under a king I loathed. And still, he betrayed me. He betrayed us all.” - the betrayal is presumably the treaty and Insomnia being sacrificed for Noctis, because it comes after the loathing and fighting, plus Regis didn’t pull back the wall himself, he inherited that position and didn’t change it).
After that, he rises to be one of the top three swordsmen in Lucis, along with Cor [[and presumably Clarus?]] and takes over the Kingsglaive at some point in the fifteen years between its founding and the present. He was probably the founding leader, but it’s never outright stated. Sometime in there he became Glauca. He could be the original Glauca, who is presumably the one who killed Queen Sylvia, or there could have been many over the years. It’s hard to tell under the armor. Clearly he’s been doing this long enough to recruit fellow traitors and put this plan in motion, but that could be anywhere from a year to a decade to two. What assurance does he have that Niflheim would keep its word, and how did he get the armor?
The man is running two armies, one from quite the distance. If he’s done so for long, it is both a sign of competence – that’s a huge amount of work, even if one is small and the other is mostly automated, and on top of that he has managed to do so undetected – and possibly of incompetence – when he holds all the cards, he still hasn’t been able to bring Lucis down yet. [[How did this man have any time to sleep?]]
Tumblr media
Rank: The shoulder tabs he wears are slightly fancier than the rest of the glaives’, and appear to have a wide/narrow/narrow pattern that matches, if anything, the common sleeve insignia for vice admirals across many navies. Though he is called "Captain" throughout the movie, he appears to be of higher ranking for practical purposes, based on his status in Lucis.
Tumblr media
Death: There is debate over whether the psychomancer who has Nyx’s kukris is Nyx or Drautos, who had Nyx’s kukri in his chest while Nyx had none. I tend to think the streaks and reddish eyes (though it could be the light of dawn) as Drautos dies indicates demonification, as is the fact his eyes crack open as we last see him.
Personality: Drautos clearly cares about his past and his responsibilities very much. He is a harsh leader, but has the respect and loyalty of his soldiers, and is capable of moments of relative softness in private. He has a tricky mind capable of assessing those around him and taking their actions into account in his plans, and is capable of projecting an image and living a double life for years. He is unbelievably determined and dedicated to his idea of right.
Relationships: The facebook blurb says he is a hard man to please, but he clearly has some relationships with his soldiers and superiors.
-Nyx Ulric: Drautos is Nyx’s mentor, and seems to care for him as well, though less than his cause. The car ride seems a last minute attempt at feeling out Nyx’s loyalties, and minutes after he orders Nyx’s death and Nyx is shot on those orders, he holds his hand and seems to have some reason to still want Nyx’s good will - either as a way to ease his death, or perhaps merely as a key to the ring and the princess. He has multiple opportunities to kill Nyx from the signing room onward that he just doesn't take.
-Regis Lucis Caelum: Drautos’s issues with Regis seem to be personal as much as political, but he seems to respect him as well. Regis is unsurprisingly shocked by the reveal of Glauca’s identity moments before his death, but though he contemptuously shoves Regis’s body to the ground, Drautos does no further damage, nor does he draw out that death. And while the bow before might be mocking, the salute after seems sincere. Otoh, he misses several chances to kill Regis without him knowing that Glauca was the one who killed him, including right after removing the ring from his hand.
-Luche Lazarus: Drautos trusts Luche with everything from running battlefields to what his true intentions are, but due to the time constraints of the movie, we don’t get to see moments like Nyx’s where they actually talk. Is it a commander-loyal subordinate relationship, one of true trust, or is Luche yet another tool?
Behind the Scenes: Drautos is portrayed, voiced, and given his face from the wonderful Adrian Bouchet, who is very nice to us all. If you don’t know him by now, check him out on twitter.
Everyone has theories about Drautos, and most of his past is left for us to fill in. Please share your theories and speculations, or things we might have missed! We'd love to hear it. (Or, you know, see you explore them during Legends week)
2022/7/14: Edited to fix some information surrounding Regis's death.
2022/11/2: Edited to add information about handedness.

The Ghost of Asakura Togo by Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Roberts' "Growing up Manly: Male Samurai Childhood in Late Edo-Era Tosa" yields an unexpected mention of depression which I've filed away in my "to write about later" folder for some time.
Here's that passage, spacing and annotations mine.
[Sasaki] Takayuki's father had greater trouble with his own emotions. He blamed himself for causing his brother's suicide, and became sleepless, visiting the brother's grave nightly. The following year his father became suicidal and slashed his face with a blade. Young Takayuki had to run to the neighbors to ask for help to prevent his father from killing himself.
Takayuki, who had been adopted into the family as an infant, was only 6 years old at the time this happened.
Ultimately the relatives built a cage in the house to keep him in until he recovered.
This sounds very cruel by modern standards, and certainly could be if the family were poor caretakers or had little interest in providing care for their confined relative, but it was a common way for families of the Edo period to deal with a relative suffering from mental health problems, an elderly family member with dementia who might wander, or commonly a problematic teenage son (like Katsu Kaishu's father, Katsu Kokichi).
In a samurai household, cage would have referred to an enclosed space that was either a room in which the doors had been replaced with wooden bars, or a smaller area built into a larger room, and confining a relative required a process of official permissions and inspections.
Outdated terminology for mental illnesses aside, in "Seeing Cages: Home Confinement in Early Twentieth Century Japan", Yumi Kim writes:
The earliest known record of home confinement for those considered mad dates to the mid-1700s. Historians Itahara Kazuko and Kuwabara Haruo argue that Edo households chose home confinement only for members with senior status in the family, namely parents, grandparents, uncles, and heirs. ... The few extant records of early modern laws and provisions concerning the insane indicate that at least five different groups of people were involved in the process of legally confining a mentally disturbed person: the family, relatives, the five-household group, local officials, and the city or district magistrate. At times a physician's diagnosis was also required."
You can read the rest of the paper here if you're interested in the subject, although it focuses primarily on home confinement from the Taisho era (1912-1926) onward.
Let's get back to Sasaki Takayuki's father, whose confinement put a strain on family finances since he was not carrying out his duties and therefore not receiving any pay, forcing the family to sell of "all weapons and armor" except an heirloom set belonging to his grandfather, and even that had to be sold eventually to make ends meet.
Takayuki's father was deemed better after a year. The family let him out of his cage and he returned to performing his duties. He nevertheless remained an extremely sensitive and difficult person, often so depressed that he could hardly do anything.
It didn't help that a few years later, when Takayuki was a young teenager, the family lost two young children, a 7-month-old girl and a 3-day-old boy, which "sent his generally difficult father into a long period of deep depression".
Takayuki writes about how often he became anxious about his father and the family on this account, but nevertheless said that despite his own status as an adopted son, his father “loved and cared for me deeply. His difficulties were because of his illness."
