Blue-Ringed Dancers are Beautiful and Graceful Damselflies
Blue-Ringed Dancers are Beautiful and Graceful Damselflies shows readers a male and a female of this sexually dimorphic species. It also informs readers about some basic facts such as range and size.
Resting Damselfly Blue-ringed dancers (Argia Sedaka) are pretty little damselflies that are common around slow moving water. Specifically, you can usually find them around lakes, ponds, retention areas, slow streams and rivers, and even roadside ditches if vegetation is present. Theses images are actually from last year when I took a trip out to Henry Beck Park. The park has a beautiful, slow…

Calopteryx maculata
Some detailed views of the beautiful Ebony Jewelwing damselfly.  North Florida, found in a ravine.  The 3 magnified shots are simple 2-4 shot focus stacks to give some detail to the face and body.  A large species, these were shot at 1:1, and just beyond using a half stack of extension tubes.

I couldn’t believe it when a bug I’d been trying to get a good look at landed right on my hat! I still didn’t get a good look at it from that angle, but I think it’s a black-winged damselfly (Calopteryx maculata). 🐉 🤠 🌳 #explorida #roamflorida #florida #flstofmind #floridaliving #florida_greatshots #fun_in_florida #LoveFL #clermont #clermontflorida #lakecountyfl #entomology #damselfly #odonata #nature #naturelovers #getoutdoorsfl #Calopteryxmaculata @visitflorida @lake.louisa.state.park (at Lake Louisa State Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgwo6RCOYrj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Moth of the Week
Primrose Moth
Schinia florida
Tumblr media
The primrose moth is part of the family Noctuidae or the family of owlet moths. It was described by French lawyer and entomologist Achille Guenée in 1852. This moths earns its name from the evening-primrose, which hosts and feed the larvae.
Description This moth has a pink head with pink filiform antennae. Their bodies are a pale yellow or cream with a pink underside. The forewings are pink with a large pale yellow edge on the outer margin. inside the pink area are pale yellow markings with a larger spot of pale yellow by lower thorax. The hindwings are cream or white with a pale yellow underside.
Average wingspan: 31.5 mm (≈ 1.2 in)
Diet and Habitat Primrose moth caterpillars eat evening primrose, biennial gaura and other members of the Onagraceae family. The larvae eat the seeds and flowers of these plants rather than the leaves. This species is found in continental North America in temperate regions. It’s range spans from southern Canada and almost all regions of the United States. This moth reaches up to Alberta and eastern Washington state. In the East and West, this Spence’s goes as far as North Carolina and Utah respectively. They do not live in the lower southwestern United States. They are found in open meadows and on the prairies of the Great Plains of eastern North America. They also like fields, clearings, and wastelands.
Mating
The primrose moth mating season coincides with the blooming season of the primrose plant, whose buds are hosts to the moth’s eggs. The eggs hatch 4-5 days after being laid. These caterpillars burrow into the ground to pupate and spend the winter. There is only one generation per year.
Average of 114 eggs laid per female
Predators This species is preyed on by birds and bats.
Fun Fact During the day, adults hide and camouflage themselves in partially closed primrose flowers, and they are strictly nocturnal.

@abovealllovedeeply submitted: I came across these damselflies having a “wheel” nice time yesterday. (Literally stopped a conversation mid-sentence to take a picture.) Florida, USA
Tumblr media
Wow they sure are having a good time. Sorry to interrupt their intimate moment. But great pic of some very pretty friends! They look like orange bluets but could  be a similar species.

Damselfly Lurien is a first, but I like it! I'm always curious as to why people pick certain species for characters, so I am politely requesting a ramble on this decision :P
I'm glad you like it, and thank you for the ask!! Honestly my reasoning is just based on personal experience. I live in Florida and I'm an avid birder/nature person. Whenever I go out to bird and especially when I'm near water, it's always the hoverflies and damselflies that will sit and Watch You. I thought that was freak behavior (affectionate). My Lurien is a damselfly because I didn't think the hoverfly body type suited him well, but I have a charismatic bond with the little guys. Since then it's been very interesting to develop given that Damselflies are predators, and related to one of the best predators in the entire animal kingdom, the Dragonfly.
Lurien being a predatory species in a city of mostly vegetarian beetles also fits why he may be a recluse in his tower, just given how vastly different he feels to the other denizens he watches over. I also liked that damselflies have ocelli, which are light-detecting eyes, in the middle of their heads, making it easier to align with Lurien's mask vs hoverflies or butterflies or moths (though I do really like @ruthlesslistener's butterfly lurien with the third eye).
In general I just think this guy is a freak and not at all elegant or graceful, on top of personal experience with the real-world counterparts. I think he should be a more fucked up looking bug than most.
I also like the idea that he's on the larger scale of lurien AU's and while he definitely doesn't take the best care of himself still, he's far more physically fit and nimble from zipping out at 3 am to hunt for vengefly snackies.

The Ebony Jewelwing is a Stunning and Unusual Damselfly
The Ebony Jewelwing is a Stunning and Unusual Damselfly shows readers the gorgeous male ebony jewelwing and explains why it is somewhat different from most other damselflies. It also provides readers with information about the range and lifecycle.
Blue-Green Beauty A little while back I came home from work tired and ready to relax on a Friday afternoon, only to be greeted by several great photo opportunites that just couldn’t be ignored. It’s funny how the tiredness melts away when I’m shooting images and watching the interesting behaviors of the wild things that I’m taking pictures of. One of the most interesting animals that I saw that…

Enallagma cyathigerum - Common Bluet Damselfly
Shot in its natural habitat in Northern Florida.  Just beyond 2x life size, this was photographed with a Nikon d300 and a Nikkor 28mm 3.5 ai-s lens reverse mounted.  Flash on full, diffused by a large diffuser.  Simple 2 shot stack to make sure the compound eye facets are all in focus.

omg I feel so silly because of how long it took me to identify this insect, I took this photo two weeks ago. T_T
The species is Glenurus gratus (AKA: doodlebugs and 'demons of the dust'). It's an antlion, within the order Neuroptera. Both adults and larvae are predators.
My mistake when I was identifying this one was that I thought it was a damselfly T_T
side tangent: I got orders Odonata and Neuroptera confused because they both have similar wing shapes and long thin bodies (and idk what im doing lol). However, you can tell them apart by resting wing placement: (with some exceptions) dragonflies fold their wings straight up over their backs, damselflies hold their wings straight out, and antlions fold their wings down at 45-degree angles.
the color though is really beautiful and distinct. The tips of the wings look like strawberry milk 🥛 🍓 also they are often found on southern live oaks (Quercus virginiana)!! Combining my love for tree and bug ID <3
I used the University of Florida's entomology website to source most of my information, as well wikipedia (lol) and bug-guide.
