Beyond Evil Episode 10

OKAY this show is definitely trying to take Obi-Wan's crown for /infinite sadness.

Lee Dong-sik/Infinite Sadness is officially my Beyond Evil sadclown OTP.

Shin Ha-kyun's acting in this show is just...wow I hope he won some version of a Korean emmy or something for his part in this show because it is just phenomenal.

One thing I've noticed is just the amount of times they let Dong-sik cry. For a guy in a media franchise that is just pretty unheard of, at least from a Western audience's POV. We are so embroiled in toxic masculinity and the idea that men can't cry because that equates to weakness is just a pathetic and depressing part of our media culture.

I want to say we are doing better as a society in normalizing letting men express their emotions and actually do more than shed that one lonely tear whenever there is a punchy emotional scene but considering how low that bar is, it's not very hard to cross.

Meanwhile, you have Lee Dong-sik breaking down into tears multiple times over the course of this show for VERY VALID AND UNDERSTANDABLE REASONS and there's no implication of weakness or he's less of a man for doing so. I'll fully admit that my ignorance of Korean culture and East Asian cultures, in general, is pretty lacking so I don't know if that's the norm. From my limited exposure, it's definitely not. Or at least I don't recall seeing a male character who expressed himself as much as Lee Dong-sik does.

Of course, the fact everyone labels him that lunatic etc and LBR he definitely has his feral and unhinged moments so there's prolly some element of truth to that. Maybe he gets a pass for it because of that?

Ugh the fucking ending of the episode. The chief dying and Dong-sik just breaking down next to him. Fuck Han Ju-won practically in tears as well just fucking stab me in the heart and end my suffering already.

Though the laconic and snarky part of me was all 'Oh there's the random death of someone close to the protagonist I've come to expect from nearly every police/law k-drama I've seen' It always seems like they love to kill off the beloved older mentor figure or someone else who holds a similar station in the protagonists lives.

I knew someone was going to die. Pffft. Pretty sure I called that one from episode one.

I think next episode is going to be spicy AF and am looking forward to Lee Dong-sik reacting to the double whammy that his sister wasn't killed by Kang Jin-muk and her killer is most likely out there and he literally just lost prolly the closest thing he has to a father, a mentor and a protector. Cause Sang-bae was definitely holding the wolves at bay when it comes to him and without him being there to shield Lee Dong-sik it's gonna get very spicy.

I'm also interested to see where the fuck they are going with Park Jeong-je's apparent mental breakdown that my boy seems to be going through. Something is up with him and his random affinity for deer and drawing them. He did say he'd killed a deer, surely he didn't like fucking completely snap, kill Yu-yeon right? And like completely just repress that shit?

Surely the show wouldn't go THAT EVIL. I mean, they did hint she got like run over so him accidentally hitting her, freaking out and going coo-coo for cocoa puffs would just be the worst.

it def changes by the day lbr, but overall he tends to lean toward acts of service. i know he absolutely melted w that one scene where bryce made and brought dinner over (like needed a good 2-5 minute hug just to process cause that shit was cute af)

hmm currently? probs not as comfortable unless it was for a reason just cause hes so used to wearing work clothes. he used to wear skirts pretty often when he was performing (much better for airflow under hot stage lights lbr) but now his wardrobe has changed so much itd be strange to have it back in the rotation (i was actually doodling some sketches the other day of him in a witch costume w the full dress asdfghjk)

hes 100% not against wearing one, but like i said it would have to be for a reason (costume, some dare or something, etc etc)

👪 - What’s their relationship with their parents like?

i talked about that quite a bit in a post yesterday, but i will Gladly talk about it anytime

jensen doesnt have a relationship with his dad, and his relationship with his mom is There, but it's not fantastic. theres a lot of lasting tension because of the situation in which jensen grew up; they were in and out of shelters, they barely had enough money to stay afloat, jensen was working to help them out by the time he was 13 (which was inevitably got him arrested), and she took him out of a safe environment to go through all that. also, jensen caused a lot of problems in school and otherwise, and he meant well (he really, really did), but there was just a lot of misguided efforts on his part that never went over well with his mom. after he went into foster care, their relationship became really sparse, and then she moved across the country when he was in college to marry some rich guy

they both care about each other a lot, and they have routine phone calls for birthdays and holidays, but they just dont really click. theres not much they can get along on, and jensen is pretty frustrated with her because of how she acts now that she has money to burn

I came across a video of Aaron and Sam Taylor Johnson and someone commented “where’s Ariana when you need her?” 💀 But also, I would love to see it…

idk my takeaway here is like… Sam’s a fucking freak lol I’m not gonna deny that for a second and she lowkey groomed him and it’s all very weird. But they’ve also been *married* for over a decade now and have two underage children together. At this point, leave them alone. Jay also lowkey groomed Bey - there was a similar vibe there - but again they’re married with kids so let’s just let it go? Why would we support/encourage breaking up families with multiple underage kids involved? As far as we know, in both cases nothing ILLEGAL happened. It’s just weird lol and neither Bey nor Aaron feel traumatized and are happy with their spouses and kids and lives so like let it go now?

Also like okay their age gap is 24 which is a lot but the same as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Micheal Douglas’s (who’ve also been married forever). The difference is Michael didn’t groom Catherine obviously because she was like late 20s when they met but they also have kids together and whatever it’s worked for them. Sarah Paulson and Holland have a 32 year gap and no one worries about it too much but again they were grown ass adults when they met so not the grooming part but like… again, when people have been married for that long and have kids together and beyond the seriously weird vibes there’s no evidence of actual wrongdoing, I think it’s time to let it go.

There are better weird age gap dynamics to judge like whatever was going on with John Mayer and Kiernan (and lbr he wasn’t In Lurve and planning to marry her and have kids like how Jay and Sam did - that said Kiernan was proper overage and Bey and Aaron weren’t so yeah look it’s still weird not denying that) or Drake and a bunch of the girls he’s “friends” with which is weird af (that is groomy vibes) and on the flip side like the elder abuse that goes on too in HW like that girl who got knocked up by Al Pacino, who’s old as shit and should not be getting scammed for last minute inheritance payouts lol. He should like idk be getting good healthcare and be taking his pills on time (and not the blue kind).

so these two are the same age!!! but have totally different trajectories, despite growing up (at least for awhile) in the same place! obv one's a servant and one's *valentina voice* 'of the blood royal' but even their choices are v different! ronan ran away to be a soldier in the fight to save astaira from roderick and cassimir literally refused to fight when the war came to his own backdoor and i honestly think that's smth for which ronan can never forgive him!!! rationally, idk if cassimir and the vasilieva retainers couldve turned the tide of the battle, but ronan's pet theory is that they could have!!! and they refused!!!! and bc of it lord m and ronan's bestie died and astaira was lost and literally every bad thing that has ever happened in his life happened!!!!!!!!!

i don't think ronan was ever cassimir's ~biggest fan (lol lbr that's def valentina) but i do think ronan wanted to give him a fighting chance and thought that if lord m trusted him, well, that was all ronan needed to know!! being the same age, he was more able to see cassimir as just a kid in a weird af situation and give him the benefit of the doubt and i think he was just like 'this all sucks man' but i think he saw an improvement in him and was like 'wow he's really trying!' and was impressed!!! but then yeah obv everything took a turn (thanks, valentina!) and ronan now hates him and hates that he himself ever gave cassimir a chance tbqh and basically views him as the worst kind of sniveling coward snake traitor kasjdfkljsdjf me: 'calm down ronan' ronan: 'NEVER!'

so yeah!! fun times w farmhands ig!! lskdjafkljsdf i do think that a big part of this is like...its easier to blame someone close at hand and fixate anger on them bc like...cassimir is someone he could conceivably get ahold of and realistically punish today if he really wanted to: he knows everyone cassimir knows, his own brother has access to his bedroom etc etc etc, but he's gonna have to try a lotttttt harder w the varmonts bc they're so powerful etc, and this is a way of sort of telling himself 'its my choice to hold off' not just 'i cant do anything im powerless' so yeah lajksdfkljdf thanks for being that for him, buddy! </3

di maria's goal, once i re-watched the highlights and actually registered what was happening, is literally the sexiest thing i've ever seen. the loss of possession, the build up, the quick passes. A TEAM GOAL FR. but whenever i re-watch highlights i can only watch argentina's goals. i have to fast-forward through the penalties that france gets and mbappe's goal; it upsets me too much lmao

also after di maria's goal, people were chanting his name and the camera's were showing how he was crying after he scored and i was just so happy for him <333 also afterwards, I read this article (https://www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/angel-di-maria-argentina-english) and it just made me even more happy that he got a goal in a wc final + won the wc.

that tweet omg :))) im just so happy not only for the players but for the PEOPLE, the way that they loved that team and suffered through all the finals and losses. no one else deserved it more. i love seeing the abuelas dancing in the street and the songs about them- makes me so happy :)

Casting Thoughts

Yes, I did a long post when the rumours first dropped but hey now it’s confirmed plus we have characters descriptions, and I’m bored so let’s do this all over again people. Under the cut because it got long

Sisi Stringer as Rose Hathaway

I said this in my other post but I’m pretty happy with Sisi as Rose.

Visually I think she’s a great fit, I love that they casted a WoC in the main role, and I think if she can bring Rose’s humour and sarcasm to the role, she’s going to do great.

The character description mentions Rose being “fiery and outspoken”, happy to jump into the action, and the strongest fighter in her class but struggling to toe the line, which is all very Rose-esque, especially in the first book. It sounds to me like they have a good grasp on her character.

I’m a little disappointed we didn’t hear more about Rose as a character since she is the lead - it felt like the descriptions for Lissa and Dimitri both gave us a little more to go on - but it is only a very preliminary description so I’m happy to wait for more.

Daniela Nieves as Lissa Dragomir

Daniele is another one who I was happy with straight away.

She’s probably not what I imagined for Lissa visually but that’s not a bad thing either; I will be interested to see if they dye her hair a lighter colour (like a caramel-blonde) but personally that’s not something I need to see for her to be a great fit for Lissa.

I think she has a very sweet face which works well for a character like Lissa but I think she’s also going to be able to stand up in Lissa’s more fiercer moments which is nice to see as well.

The character descriptions mentions her as being “carefree and kind-hearted” who “coasts” through life until a death in the family thrusts her into a new role. That sounds a lot like pre-series Lissa so I wonder if we’re going to see a bit of that in the show before Andre (and her parents??) die and see that change.

It’s curious though that she’s described as the younger sister of the heir apparent - which would be Andre - so it sounds like they’ve changed it so Andre was supposed to be King. Obviously a deviation from the books but I don’t hate it? I don’t think it would change Lissa’s arc all that much because obviously she was always going to grow up to be an influential royal figure, this just slightly changes the dynamics of it.

The description also specifically mentions that she’s uninterested in “political machinations” and the “hypocrisy of the moroi royal society” which sounds very accurate to book!lissa as well.

All in all I’m very happy with what they’re doing with Lissa.

Keiron Moore as Dimitri Belikov

This is one who’s really grown on me since the rumoured cast list started circulating. At first I was kind of eh about him but I can really see him as Dimitri now.

I will be curious to see if he grows out his hair or not though.

As far as I know Keiron is not Russian, there’s not a lot about him online, but there’s some instagram activity on his account linking him to UK based companies so that would be my guess as to where he’s from. They’ve kept Dimitri’s incredibly Russian name so I guess we’re to assume Keiron might be doing an accent and they’re keeping Dimitri’s backstory relatively the same? I’m not gonna be super mad if they change it just because I think it’s doable for him not to be Russian (I know, I know a whole book is set in Russia but lbr here they could make him from anywhere and just send Rose there in that book).

The biggest thing for me will be his chemistry with Sisi, Danila and Zoey had great chemistry (imo anyway) which saved the move a little for me, so it’ll be important that Sisi and Keiron do as well. They’ve interacted a few times online which is cute so I’m hoping they were able to do some chemistry reads and that will translate on screen.

The character description mentions Dimitri as being “lethal, disciplined, discreet, and totally committed” as well as living by “a deep moral code” but with more going on “beneath his stoic, watchful surface” which sounds exactly like book!Dimitri to me.

They don’t really specify what his role at St Vlad’s is going to be but they do mention that he is a guardian so I’m assuming they’re keeping some sort of age gap between him and Rose. They also don’t mention anything about their relationship in the description, be it student/teacher, platonic, romantic, whatever, but they do say he has “an expansive spirit that could threaten to expose the underlying tension between his sense of what’s right and his formal duty to the Moroi.” which seems like a nod to their relationship.

Andre Dae-Kim as Christian Ozera

This was one of my favourite casting choices from the original rumoured cast list and I still love it.

The idea of a non-white Christian makes a lot of sense to me and I think Andre could do a great job of Christian’s aloofness (in the first book) as well as his sarcasm and growing confidence across the other books.

His character description confuses me a bit though: “Intelligent and thoughtful, Christian is the pariah of the school and royal court, due to his parents’ unforgivable societal sins.” sounds accurate enough to the book (although idk if thoughtful is quite the word I’d use for Christian - maybe they mean it in the sense that he’s quiet and keeps to himself?).

Even “Well-read and hungry for knowledge” doesn’t sound that far off, idk if he was *that* particularly studious in the books, but it doesn’t necessarily not make sense either you know?

But “he searches for faith-based answers and discovers a kindred spirit who is also looking for the truth” ??? My cynical, irreverent asshole Christian is now a man of faith? I’m assuming Lissa is the “kindred spirit” (again weird word choice but maybe they mean she’s feeling lost because of the death of her family?) but I just cannot see Christian as being particularly religious.

I’m trying to keep an open mind about these changes because you never know they might play out totally different on screen, but I really hope they didn’t make these changes, particularly that Christian is studious and religious, just because they cast an Asian actor as him (because they feel a little like Asian stereotypes).

J August Richards as Victor Dashkov

This is one that didn’t appear on the original rumoured cast list (as far as I saw) and it’s so different to his description in the books that I kind of don’t have an opinion about it as a casting choice.

I’ve never seen him in anything before so purely on a visual level I think he could be a great fit for Victor, I just think it’ll really come down to how he plays it.

As for this character description: “Victor is a Moroi noble vampire with a heart of gold who’s highly regarded for his role as advisor and political strategist to Moroi dignitaries.” as well as mentioning that he has intelligence and influence, sounds pretty accurate to the book. Obviously if Andre was the heir to the throne, Victor had to be shifted out of that role, but I think his book 1 arc could still work if they wanted it to.

The “heart of gold” bit obviously made me chuckle and I really hope they threw it in there as a kind of decoy to throw non-book-readers off the fact that he’s actually the villain in book 1/s1.

As for giving him a husband and two daughters, my thoughts are: why the fuck not? He didn’t have a love interest in the original books and I’m always down for more lgbtq+ rep. My only concern is it maybe playing into the trope of evil/villain characters being queer-coded. And as for having two daughters, well as long as one of them is Natalie I don’t mind.

Anita-Joy Uwajeh as Tatiana Vogel

Okay this is the most bizarre one imo, not because of the casting, but just the character description.

I mean “Tatiana is a Moroi vampire and political underdog who slowly takes the royal court by storm. Motivated by love and a sense of justice, Tatiana has a unique skill of making herself seem of no consequence until we realize much too late that she was always the one to watch.” sounds extremely Tasha Ozera to me, so like why not just make this character Tasha? Nothing about this sounds like Tatiana, and Tatiana wasn’t even a Vogel anyway (well Vogel wasn’t even one of the 12 royal families), she was an Ivashkov.

In terms of Anita-Joy herself, well I mean we don’t really have a character to compare her to, is she supposed to be more like Tasha or Tatiana? She looks fairly young, so my guess is actually on Tasha, but we’ll have to wait to see I guess.

Mia McKenna-Bruce as Mia Karp

This is another one that I was instantly a fan of.

I was so not a fan of Mia’s casting in the movie (I can’t even remember who played her tbh but I really didn’t like it) so this Mia is a lot closer to how I imagine her.

I think she’ll be able to carry Mia’s transformation from bratty social-climber to badass fighter really well.

The character description is interesting though. “Witty, cutting, and just the right kind of ruthless when necessary, non-Royal Mia has a long-term plan to social climb her way into the ranks of royalty, with all the privilege and freedom that entails.” sound pretty bang on to Mia in the first book.

“A plan complicated by her instant chemistry with Meredith, a Guardian-in-training, as Mia struggles to reconcile her attraction to Meredith with her lowly status.” is an obvious deviation though, and one I kind of love??? Give me all the queer rep, and if we get to see Mia confront the issue of comp-het I’m so here for it.

It’s kind of funny though because I’ve seen theories that Meredith is a replacement for Eddie and Mia/Eddie has always been my sort of rarepair ship.

The last name Karp is weird af though. Is she supposed to be Sonya’s daughter? And if that’s the case I wonder if we’re going to actually see Sonya turn Strigoi in the show’s first season or something and that triggers the change in Mia? Interesting concept but I’m not sure how the timeline will work.

Rhian Blundell as Meredith

So this is another new one, and tbh I hadn’t given Meredith *that* much though in the past but she’s probably close to how I would have pictured her which is cool.

The elephant in the room with this casting is that Meredith’s role in the books was relatively minor - she was just kind of that character that got brought up whenever R.M needed a dhampir who wasn’t Rose/Dimitri/Mason/Eddie. So clearly she’s going to have a bigger role in the tv show which I don’t mind but I do wonder if we’re going to lose a character - probably Eddie lbr - in order to have her. They haven’t casted an Eddie yet as far as we know, but I have seen it pointed out that Eddie’s role in book 1 was pretty small so maybe they just aren’t announcing it. But there’s also the possibility that maybe Meredith will sort of replace Eddie and be the third part of Rose and Mason’s friendship.

I’m very interested by this part of her character description though, “She has little patience for Rose’s volatility or Mia’s elitism, and regularly calls both of them out.”

Jonetta Kaiser as Sonya Karp

I don’t necessarily dislike Jonetta as Sonya but I am confused by this choice. She looks fairly young, which tbf Sonya was young-ish I guess, but if Mia is supposed to be her daughter she doesn’t look old enough to have a teenaged daughter. So maybe Sonya and Mia are sisters? Cousins? Just have each other’s last names for no reason? I really don’t know. They also look nothing alike.

Other than that, I don’t really have an opinion about Jonetta as Sonya. Obviously looks nothing like how Sonya was described but that’s not new nor a massive concern for me.

I can’t really tell just from looking at her, and I haven’t seen her in anything, if she would play a good Sonya. I think with a lot of the characters it’s going to come down to the personality they bring to the part and the writing.

I looooooove her character description though: “Quiet, careful and decidedly odd, Sonya is not of royal bloodline and sits out on the fringe of Moroi society, preferring to spend her time in the library or her gardens. Not a person who likes a scene, nonetheless she has a quiet but profound power of her own. She is taken by surprise when a Dhampir Guardian named Mikhail shows interest in her, a relationship that will expose both the brightest and darkest parts of her heart.” It’s everything I would probably want from a description of Sonya and I’m more and more convinced that we’re going to see Sonya’s descent into madness and transformation into a Strigoi play out in maybe the first season which I am so curious how they’re going to work into the timeline.

Andrew Liner as Mason Ashford

Our last one and another one who doesn’t look remotely like his description but again? Not a surprise and not a problem for me. He looks like he could play Mason’s goofiness really well as well as be a solid contender for a love interest for Rose.

“Charming, loyal and popular, Mason is Rose’s main competition in the quest to become the No. 1 Guardian-in-training. Though their relationship is casual on her side, he is hopeful she will finally look at him and see him as something more.” His character description makes a lot of sense, maybe him being Rose’s main competition is a bit of a deviation? But I think that’s more an indication that he’s supposed to be a strong fighter which isn’t inaccurate to the books. The rest sounds great.

Other Thoughts

Descriptions of the show specifically mention friendship and classism as major themes which I am very happy to hear about because those are the two parts of VA that I love the most.

Am a little more worried about it being described as “sexy” though, if they shove a whole bunch of meaningless sex scenes in it just because it’s a YA show I’m not gonna be happy.

Seen the show compared to “Game of Thrones” and “Bridgerton” which at first had me like oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck not good not good not good. But thinking about it more and trying to understand where Plec’s coming from with that description I wonder if means similar to GoT as in the cut-throat nature of the Moroi/Dhampir society cause I can kind of see that. And as for Bridgerton I wonder if she’s referring to the kind of social-climbing aspects of it, because again that makes sense and it seems like a theme she really wants to concentrate on. I hope that’s what she means by those comparisons, or that she just wants to compare it to popular shows to get people to watch it. The worst would be if she tries to throw in a lot of unnecessary sex scenes to make it like those shows, because I hate when they do that, especially when the characters are teenagers.

Interesting to hear that Plec has known about the series since before Twilight or TVD - not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Seems like it’s actually mostly (or all??) written by Marguerite MacIntyre which is interesting because I know people were worried about Julie Plec - I’ve never watched anything by either of them so I’m neutral at this point.

Colin Rian O’Hanlon: 22, 5′6″, pale af with lots of freckles cause he’s very Irish, had a thick accent when he was really young but has mostly gotten rid of it (except for when hes shitfaced drunk), dark red kinda burgundy hair that looks more brown than red in darker lighting, quite a few scars

overall colin’s kind of a dick. he pisses people off on purpose, gets in their way, touches their things without asking, and makes them question just about everything they stand for. that’s for the employees of his parents’ business, at least. colins parents run an elite service of highly-trained hitmen, and at one point he was supposed to take over the company and was trained as such for many years. unfortunately colin decided killing people was wrong, and has been ostracized from the family since and is either used as a punching bag or completely ignored. but, because he’s an asshole, he doesn’t get much sympathy for the way hes treated. in all actuality, the things hes doing are his very backwards attempt at getting the employees to see what theyre doing is wrong and that they should leave as soon as possible

Ross Jaymes Masters: 22, 5′9″, lots of tattoos, from wisconsin and has a midwestern accent (literally says ope every 5 minutes lbr), has bleached his hair to hell and back but is letting it grow out (finally)

ross is overall amazing in every way possible, very kind and caring but can be cocky at times (in a lovable way though). is basically a genius, almost has his phd in psychology because his schooling, along with colins, changed a lot when he moved in with the o’hanlons at 13 or 14. i wont get into all that, its pretty sad, but essentially moving in with them was treated as a boarding school type thing, and him and colin learned mostly through private tutors and didn’t really do summer breaks. hes incredibly charismatic and charming, and he knows it gets him more than it should. ross is also very private with his accomplishments because he knows how privileged he is to have all these things, especially in comparison to his 12 siblings and growing up as one of the very, very few pocs in the incredibly white, christian, conservative town he was born in

Lynette Brielle Dawson: 21, 5′8″, really dark brown hair, some tiny tattoos here and there

lynette comes off as very professional, and saves any arguments or problems for when she can talk to the individual in private. she grew up with her family working in the same business as the O’Hanlons, so she has a lot of knowledge and training already covered which is why she so easily gets accepted into the O’Hanlon’s company. colin and lynette are sort of each others worst nightmare. lynette is like the child the colins parents wish they had, so it causes a lot of friction between them there, and they just started off on the wrong foot and somehow manage to trip their way to another one every time they talk. lynette is trying so hard to do everything right and make a name for herself so colin is there every step of the way messing that up. theyre really the only thing keeping the other from succeeding, cause lynette could do her job if he was out of the picture and colin would be able to stay under his parents radar if she stopped showing him up (unintentionally) in every way possible. eventually they do agree to stop making each others lives miserable, but of course shit hits the fan right after

Vincent Cohen Brenner: 5′11″, 20, definition of straight white boy (blond hair and all)

oh how i hate this dickhead. hes manipulative, rude, arrogant, overly privileged, and knows he can get away with anything. he originally was just accompanying lynette to the masquerade (where she was hired) because she didn’t want to drive hours to the middle of nowhere alone. unfortunately the end of the masquerade didn’t end how lynette thought, so she ended up asking if vincent could be hired as well. hes careful not to show that hes an asshole around her, but colin can see it from a mile away. its another big clashing point between all of them, and hes so willing to do anything for lynette because he has a very creepy stalkery crush on her. dont get me wrong, he comes off as a very nice, respectful person, but some of the fucked up parts show through in his humor and such

Austin Elliot Keller: 6′, 25, also the definition of a straight white boy but like the lovable himbo version (light brown hair)

austin has worked at the mansion for a few terms, and has managed to make friends with ross, and somewhat colin (a feat in and of itself). hes incredibly dedicated to his job, which can put a strain on some of his relationships, but overall hes very considerate and genuinely a good person (despite his profession). he takes a liking to lynette right away, not in a creepy way, and shows her a lot of respect and offers to help her through the first few months at the mansion because its all so new. while its subtle, its very different from the friendship she gets from vincent, and because lynette is very her, the two of them mesh very well together. they become friends very quickly and its kinda obvious that theres the possibility of something more there, but neither of them rush into anything and they really build a good relationship before going into anything romantic

Valarie Marie Grimshaw: 24, 5′5″, a sweetheart honestly, pretty much looks like emma roberts

ugh as i said a sweetheart. she just wants to be friends with people and loves making connections, but isnt entirely a people pleaser. she knows she cant make everyone happy and is okay with that. she makes a very quick connection with lynette, like instantly they become best friends, but she also starts hanging out with colin early on. she develops a bit of a crush on him, very curious as to what he has going on especially being stuck in the mansion despite that his parents hate him. lynette makes fun of her endlessly for it, but valarie also makes a bit of connection with him (as friends) and sorta coaxes lynette into giving him a chance (not that either lynette or colin want it, but still)

Listen. This is an EXCELLENT idea and I’m gonna do the things, so enjoy your prize of a sneak peak of things to come, because Jazz would make an excellent Matrix bearer lbr. (And in this universe at least, he’d have the exact temperament to wield it properly/not have it take over him owing to his calm, cool demeanor)

My actual guess was that Optimus did use to bear it in the Functionist universe up to the point where it was torn out of his chest once he was executed and taken as a weapon/source of unlimited energy by the Senate, and the crew that gets flung here needs to help Functionist!Jazz’s crew to get it out of their grasps before they use it to destroy what remains of the rebellion.

S TIER

Gladys: Boss ass bitch, hard ass, an icon. Took out Penny’s eye because she almost killed her son, she’s so protective, only she is allowed to hurt her son. Bonus points for fondly reminiscing over committing armed robbery with her husband in her youth. Also hot af, lbr. Please come back, Gladys, I miss you.

Hiram: Fuckin’ dramatic loser, not a sixteen-year-old nerd playing games except HE IS. Ridiculous, over the top, deeply amusing to watch. He wants his daughter to be his protege, but she refuses, so he turns her into his rival and it’s just amazing because he 100% views her as a legitimate rival even though she’s a fucking teenager, I love him. Also, whenever a man hurts Veronica, he’ll fuck him up, and I respect that. My fondness for Hiram has never been as high as when he told Archie that Veronica was the best thing to ever happen to him. Also also, he’s clearly scheming to get Veronica and Archie back together in the hopes that this time she’ll invite him to her wedding (she won’t).

Sierra: ACE ATTORNEY SIERRA MCCOY! So corrupt, I love her. Also, did you see her in Katy Keene? Because she was an icon looking out for her daughter. Also, her dynamic with Jughead is 10/10 and her vibe is 200/10, need more Sierra McCoy in my life.

Penelope: SUCH a delight, SO over the top, COMPLETELY awful, I love her and her one glove. Hides in the walls to gaslight her daughter but also gives her daughter the gift of murdered enemies for graduation, the most thoughtful gift possible in Riverdale. Turned herself in for “some of” her crimes, presumably only the ones she thought weren’t completely justified, so maybe two or three of them. Please bring her back later, I am begging you.

A TIER

Fred: Good and wholesome but kind of bland. A loving father, but points deducted for being a dick to Jughead that one time in 1x13. Never forget, never forgive.

Mary: A bicon and neglectful landlord, but also clearly doesn’t require references for house renters, so good for her. Otherwise bland, but points for mostly not sucking.

B TIER

None

C TIER

Tom: WHERE IS YOUR SON, TOM? Is he cruising? In a cult? WHERE IS HE, TOM? Tom never knows where his son is, which is a problem because his son is Kevin, king of bad choices. A better father to Archie than to Kevin, smh.

FP: Earned a lot of points for Complex Personal Reasons, but points lost and deducted when he told Jughead he couldn’t come with them to Toledo. Jellybean literally acted out to spend time with her brother and Jughead just wants his family together, and you’re gonna pull this shit? Boooooo. Still, he’s pretty amusing and a clear bughead shipper, and points added for being v gay with Fred and v sexy with Gladys.

D TIER

Miles: As a former theatre kid, I cannot overlook how absolutely awful it was for him to walk out of his daughter’s performance when it was almost fucking done, like HOW DARE. A personal slight to me, and I’ll never forgive him for it. Would be at C tier if not for the Theatre Kid Outrage.

Clifford: Murderer but also super bland, so he goes here.

Hermione: Higher tiers in earlier seasons, but now she’s kind of meh and also told her daughter to stay with Chad after her daughter told her about like three red flag behaviors of Chad’s, so boo hiss to her.

TRASH TIER

Hal: A terrible serial killer who keeps trying to control women’s bodies (red flag!!) and also made Betty murder her cat. I’m GLAD Penelope shot him, and I hope he rots in hell.

Alice: Stopped being fun when they stopped having her main trait be vicious wine mom and instead wanted to make her tragic. Booooo, boring! And then she gave away Betty’s college money and sold the house and just askjflsjf I’m done with Alice as Betty’s mom and she isn’t even fun anymore. Call me when you’re extremely mean again, Alice.

observations~ about andor

So I zoomed into the Andor reel like a normal person after seeing this post by @dasakuryo, so you could say this is inspired by a post that was inspired by a post by @starwarsandor. Trying to block out the memory of that mustard yellow jacket which I cannot tell you how much I do not like LOL, I went and dug a little into the art in the background and found some things that might lend credence to Ai’s theory that we might see the Cobalt Laborer’s Reformation Front, or at least some labor movement of some kind in the show, and how it might connect with other aspects of lore around Fest.

1. The Mustard Jacket of Revolution

So as she said in that post which you should read, this nasty mustard yellow jacket

looks awfully similar to what the Rebels wear during the Sullustan campaign in Battlefront II. I never played the games so I went to youtube and looked up some gameplay and yeah, it’s pretty interesting how the character Shriv seems to be wearing something very, very similar.

Okay, cool. But what’s interesting to me is that on the Wookieepedia page for Sullustans, the main photo is a Sullustan wearing an outfit very, very similar to what is in the Andor reel.

Interesting.

So what was going on with Sullust and the Cobalt Laborer’s Reformation Front anyway? From Wookieepedia:

The Cobalt Laborers' Reformation Front was an anti-Imperial worker Socialist organization on the planet of Sullust, which fought not just to overthrow the Imperial reign over the planet, but also for worker's rights

They were explicitly socialist.

2. Miners, Manufactuers and Labor Movement in My Star War?

No I am not playing, in the sizzle reel I saw some artwork that made me pause.

Aww, Cassian’s so cute next to that worker but wait what’s going on the left? Okay so I was talking to Ai and she made the point that that worker felt very Mexican laborer circa 1900s.

I’m not saying that there’s hats like that all over the artwork but they’re around.

So we know Diego is executive producer and like, idk how much sway that means he has over story elements but he did visit the Zapatistas and he directed the movie about Cesar Chavez, so who knows?

But what is clear to me is that workers will play a role in the story. The scenery doesn’t look Iike Sullust, but there are mines and factories in lots of places. And there is lots of evidence of laborers in the art.

Not to mention this artwork reminds me of some pictures of Sullust:

But again that could be any Imperial factory.

It could be Carida, described in canon as a barren and mountainous planet, and obviously we know an Imperial academy is there. Also Carida is where Jeron Andor was killed during the protest against Republic militarism, so that would be a good way to tie in his personal history. It is also described as a barren landscape Or maybe Ord Mantell, since we know that Cassian spends time there as Willix, and it is a dusty looking planet that had an Imperial deepdock.

Wherever it is, I imagine he will be working with factory workers and other laborers just based on the artwork. He is a recruiter after all.

3. Mantooine/Fest Drama Is Gonna Be In This Shit

We do see some art of Cassian and his sister probably lbr on a snowy planet with cute ass parkas so I assume that Cassian is very much in the area. And so I started thinking about what planets in canon and/or in Legends have a history with Fest?

Mantooine is the obvious answer for a couple of reasons.

Fest and Mantooine have a history of wars between them, so the Mantooine Liberators (an early anti-Imperial resistance organization) and the Fest Resistance Group didn’t have good communication. The Liberators took control of an Imperial garrison, and the Imperials on Fest were like LOLno, and the Fest resistance couldn’t get in contact with them so the Liberators were defeated. This is true in both Legends and canon, and in canon it happens in 14 AFE - when Cassian was 20ish. Right around the time that the show is going to cover.

They join together to become the Atrivis cell in Legends.

One of the only survivors from the attack was a man named Loom Carlpin, who was Travia Chan’s Chief of Staff (she was one of the founders of the Fest Resistance Group). The Wookieepedia page on her for canon features this quote:

"After due deliberation, Madame Travia Chan of the Atrivis Resistance Group agrees to the terms of partnership with Senator Mon Mothma of the Alliance. May our factions be stronger together than apart. No more Mantooines! Down with the Empire!"

I immediate thought of how Ai pointed out in her post that Diego said the show will focus on the “building of a revolution” when I read that.

4. Operation Cobolt and Other Coincidences, aka Cait is Now Just Losing Her Mind

So in Legends lore, Crix Madine leads the Alliance’s Operation Cobolt between 1 ABY and 3 ABY. According to Wookieepedia, it’s a hit-and-run operation over Mantooine to destroy the Imperial base there. And I am telling you I started to freak out because the name of the canon version of Operation Cobolt is Operation Cobalt.

Okay but 1 ABY... Cassian’s dead by then D: Well, the canon version just says it takes place before Endor LOL so there’s no reason why he can’t be involved in Operation Cobalt. But even if it takes place later, the point of Rogue One is partly that the actions of individuals live on through the collective.

One last connection that I think is probably coincidental but also made me flip out - the writer of Battlefront: Twilight Company, where the Cobalt Laborers’ Reformation Front is described as being a socialist organization, is none other than Mr. Rogue One Novelization himself, Alexander Freed.

Anyway I am sure I had other thoughts but they’re gone so let me know what y’all think.

I have too many thoughts about Black Widow

+++++ many Black Widow spoilers below +++++

Tbh I hate me for how much I loved this damn movie. But the entire character of Natasha has literally always been specially designed to smack every single one of my kinks, and here we are almost a decade after I met her (because yeah, I met her on The Avengers and then went backwards to catch her other appearances). ANYWAY. A few super random thoughts in super random order:

Bless exactly everything about the Natasha/Yelena relationship. I worried when I learned the film’s general premise that they’d devote a shit ton of time to all the unresolved trauma between them, and they just didn’t. All the pain was there and they dealt with it, but they let the love win every time and I was HERE for it. (I get so exhausted by the damn “Is she trustworthy or not?” narrative. It’s boring.)

How is David Harbour so gross and so hot at the same time? I have questions. A lot of questions. Also, I adore him.

Dreykov was somehow both super cartoony and goofy yet also creepy af, and I think for me personally the creepy af factor was 110% about the way in which he stood too close to every woman he spoke to. I have huge issues with personal space, and his constant personal space invasion, particularly with Natasha, was the worst.

One thing I didn’t extra super love was Taskmaster/Antonia. I’m gonna let my feelings on that roll around in my brain for a while and watch the whole thing again in a few days before I even attempt to articulate what my issues are, but that aspect of the plot just wasn’t my fave.

The whole theme of female autonomy of the lack thereof is obviously super disturbing, and that’s also an issue I need to let percolate for a while. But lbr, it’s super common to consider women more or less a commodity, and I appreciated the movie’s willingness to call a spade a spade in that regard.

Because I continue to live under a rock, this is my first Florence Pugh movie, and wow she’s just delightful. I will forever be a sucker for actors who could chew the scenery but don’t (whether due to their own good choices or quality direction). Understatement will get me every damn time, and she did understatement soooo well. The “American Pie” scene with Alexei is a great example. It could have been just gross and manipulative but her acting choices (and David Harbour’s, but I already knew that;) were stellar. And yes, I sobbed to the level of gross snot at the after credits scene. Ugh.

Which brings me to the part where I WILL DIE MAD ABOUT CLINT AND NAT. I have absolutely accepted that this is just another thing I’ll die mad about. This fucking movie really had to give me Nat offhand noticing arrows and the image of the two of them smushed up in a tiny space playing tic tac toe. Just hearing her say his name makes my stomach do flippy things. I need to write some angsty super AU porn or something because this is some bullshit. They should have been together and she shouldn’t have died, and that’s that on that.

Yelena mocking Nat’s fighting stance is life.

I made an out loud snorty noise when Nat hit Alexei in the face.

Rachel Weisz is irritatingly beautiful.

When Nat said “Thank you for your cooperation” I was lifted in an actual other dimension.

I absolutely knew that Yelena would get a dog and still got cartoonishly emo when she did.

I’m never gonna think about Yelena’s fucking vest without wanting to cry. Just the whole thing where it’s the first piece of clothing she ever purchased entirely of her own free will and it’s so basic and dippy but so deeply important to her, and the way the movie weaves that thread into the whole part where almost all baby sisters want their older sisters to think their fashion choices are cool just . . . *sobs incoherently*

I know I’m forgetting shit but I’ll stfu for now. My exhausted brain hasn’t been enthusiastic about anything fictional in a hot minute, so I’m just all appreciation! I’d love to hear thoughts if you guys have them.
