Building on the favourite animal ask, another Very Important Question: favourite PREHISTORIC animal? And why? (I've always loved gorgonopsids and pterosaurs like anurognathus, but a new favourite is aquilolamma the eagle shark. They're just very cute).

I feel like my top favorites are pretty pedestrian, but I like prehistoric deer a lot!

#they're so big why are they so big #imagine seeing an irish elk in the wild #or a herd of them #I also like long-horned bison #it's hard to imagine the good old mammoth without experiencing some type of awe and reverence #a few years ago there was a a lot of talk about spinosaurus possibly being a good swimmer and I really loved that idea personally #the looong torso & tail short limbs and quadrupedal posture made it look so sleek and crocodilian #I have no idea if that theory holds any water but I think they'd be my favorite dinosaur in any case #answered #anonymous

Survived a 14 mile hike. Luckily didn't get gored by an unexpected bison. Love the prarie!

#pro tip: dont hike a bison reserve at night #sometimes the rangers tell you they herded all the bison into one aream #but forget to tell you they put them back in at night #luckily didnt see one but there was sooo much fresh shit that wasnt there in the morning #and we did id it as bison using google. nothing else here shits that big.

the ranboo/slimecicle/sneegsnag wolfquest vod is reminding me that not everyone knows basic wolf ecology and behavior like

they've got 3 wolves and they decided to attack some bison

(all 3 wolves were killed multiple times)

#i used to visit a wolf research/education center every year that was given a bison herd at one point #so they started letting 2-3 wolves into the bison enclosure once a week during the summer as enrichment for both parties #2-3 wolves have no chance against an adult bison and the same wolves were never used too many weeks in a row to be safe #the staff would get the bison to gather together beforehand too so it'd be harder for the wolves to single out any one of them #i think someone reported them and they had to stop but the closest anyone got to injury was a bison losing a small tuft of fur #a lot of popular wolf photos come from this place so i'll often see some wolf meme and be like. hey that's ayla. i've met her.

#i just watched part of a bbc documentary where a bison like fuckin pushed a baby bison from its herd over into a pack of wolves #that were already attacking the baby bison #and like it was in panic stampede mode but still it was kinda brutal #little guy was already losing bro you didn’t have to add insult to injury #i guess at least it was over faster???? so it wasn’t scared for as long???? idk it made me sad but also I DID laugh
