“Fuck! Neteyam, you scared the shit out of me! What are you doing here?” 

Your heart almost jumped out of your chest as you took in the man sitting on your bed, that was way too big to comfortably fit in your tiny room, not that that’s ever stopped him in all the years you’ve known him. He looked almost out of place here now, so long after the last time, and you winced a little at the contrast between the memories in your mind and what was displayed so clearly in front of you. 

Neteyam looked lost in thought, almost unaware of your presence or your voice, glossy eyes fixed somewhere beneath your desk, on a specific box you wish he never got to see.

“This room hasn’t changed one bit in all this time. It’s so weird. Everything’s changed…” the sigh that tried him felt like it was expelled from deep within his soul, like a sigh he’s been holding for the last year and a half. “Everything… and yet this room, it’s like a portal to the past, like I woke up in a life that feels like a mere dream sometimes.”

You don’t interrupt his musings.

“The sheets, the books, the smell, the way the light flickers sometimes, the way the mattress dips on one side more than the other because you’ve always preferred the left side of the bed, and I always had to sleep on the right, even the broken vase I broke with my tail the night I left. It’s all the same.”

His gaze finally settles on you. He looks pained as he sees you, finally the human he remembers, that he loved. It hurts him being in this room. It hurts you, too. It was your turn to sigh, as you tried to remove the images of the past flashing in front of your eyes like a picture book, and tried to focus on the reality that was still weighing heavily on your heart, no matter how many counterweights you balanced it with. 

Your sigh matched his earlier one as you spoke, your eyes darting to the room that you spent less time in with each passing day, that felt as much of a relic of the past as you sometimes felt in his life. 

“Yeah. I guess nothing’s changed.”

He notices an ornate bow by the foot of the bed, clearly the make of a talented Omaticayan warrior. It annoys him to no end that he can recognise the work easily, having grown up seeing it, having been one of the few that could compare to his. It angers him further just how much the disdain doesn't seem to want to melt away, regardless of how much he's told himself to let it go, regardless of how he swore the reason he came here tonight had nothing to do with it. He had no right to pry, not anymore. No right to be jealous... not anymore.

“Well, at least some things have changed...”

You blush and he hates it, hates that you're even talking about it to begin with, hates that he has to hear this in the first place.

“Tarsem made it for me. It’s cute.” You didn’t know why, it’s not like you owed him anything, but you couldn’t help the next words, that stumbled unceremoniously out of your mouth in a panicked hurry. You didn’t owe him anything, but you still needed him to know. “And platonic.” 

“Yeah, so were we.” The words, and the bitterness in them, so thinly veiled despite what you assumed were his best efforts, shocked you. This wasn’t like Neteyam at all - Neteyam was kind, and careful with his words always, he was considerate and empathetic, and he was never mean, especially not to you. Especially not like this.

You swallowed the lump in your throat and the tears that threatened to spill, leaving his words to hang in the air, making it thick and heavy with heightened emotions you were both trying your best to suppress. 

“That’s not fair.”

“You’re right. It’s not.”

identity is above all else, it seems like. ep 14 of queen of tears ruined me in all the good ways. when the question is "do you want to die as yourself?" vs "are you willing to live at the cost of who you are as a person?", the ultimate answer hae-in gives is no. she'd rather come to peace with the prospect of death with all of her memories of loving and, in turn, being loved coming with her. the death of memories is more painful than the death of her life itself. hyunwoo begging and sobbing in her arms does not deter her, however much she wants to keep on living. as herself. keep on living as the hong hae-in who loved dearly and who was loved, desperately so.

a loss of identity is death to everything that ever had a hand in helping her become who she is now. this brings me to the phrase "death is for the living". the dead do not mourn or face the aftermath of their last breath in the world of the living. the living, those who are left behind, are the ones who truly know what death is. so it is painful when hyunwoo, the man who isn't struck with the terminal illness bound to take her life any time soon, begs almost on his knees for hae-in, the woman who's counting the seconds left she has to live, to give up her sense of self. it's understandable how both of them stand strong in their desires. one fears becoming a stranger to all that she loves and one fears becoming familiar to life without the one he cannot live without. so he does everything in his power to have her take the surgery (all effort is in vain, she will not give up her identity).

i love this episode so much. im still only halfway through it but i had to give my two cents. such a beautifully tragic dilemma of two people who love. one loves by wanting to remember, one loves by giving everything to make her live. have a taste of love again for the first time. he says that he'll be the first person she'll meet and get to know again after the surgery. that he will still be there for her when she wakes up a completely different, empty, and lost person. he wants her to live, does not care if she'll ever even be able to reconnect with him ever again. he believes that she deserves to wake up another day and smile. to still be able to make new memories.

in the end they're both very selfish people who love selflessly.

edit: help me my stomach hurts from laughing so hard oml not him using his face and body card to annoy her into living. using jealousy as a mean to motivate her to take the freaking surgery and live ugh im in tears ahhahahah i love how if she doesn't become convinced the first few times when he's nice, he just intentionally pisses her off or annoys her into doing things to help herself 😭😭 thr only way to get hae-in motivated to live: make her mad at himself and have her do beneficial things out of sheer SPITE

If the Monster High brainrot wasn't obvious enough, I found all the diary entries that come with photos (Something I had no idea was a thing -- I unfortunately never owned a MH doll NIB) AND Y'ALL I CAN'TTTTTTT DUDE I'M GONNA CRYYYYYYYY

This two-pack is one of my all-time grails I hope to buy some day without having to do too much TLC (especially Frankie's white hair q-q). And if there was a way for me to get a physical copy of this specific diary alongside them I would pay good money for it, seriously. They're so supportive of each other, the little goobers! (9qHq)9

As much as I love their ship, I love it in a post-Jackson-and-Holt-coping-with-each-others-existence version, like give it a year or two and it'd probably be chill. It's like, they both care about each other a lot but there's a biiiig existential crisis that one of them's going through, so for now it's on pause. But as far as current/present canon is concerned, I do find they have the best interactions when they don't have to worry about others making assumptions about them and are just hanging out together. It's very sweet and it's why they're easily my favorite characters in the franchise (and Holt too, he just happens to not be here in the diary entry for obvious reasons). There's soooo many characters I love in the series, they just happen to give me the most dopamine haha!

But also I NEED to call out the bit where he says "I got so red I thought my hair might catch fire" because HOOOOOOO THE AU IDEAS I HAVE THAT LITTLE DETAILS LIKE THIS ONLY CONFIRMS 'cause I like to think he gets super flushed when he's embarrassed or panics and ESPECIALLY around Frankie cause he doesn't wanna make a fool out of himself around her and--and and my whole thing about him and Holt that I can't spoil for my future fic about it but I REAAAAALLY want to spoil aaAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH

you know how theres a single moment in any sort of book/movie/play that makes you suddenly Understand. the sort of moment which makes you go 'oh. oh. this was what it was all about. thisis the core of this story.' and it keeps repeating over and over and over in your head without your permission. in kiden, that core moment was this; kasen moving forward to hold his wagasa over gracia's turned back, a gesture of love he knows and expects and wants to go unnoticed.

a fusetter I read wondered if it was his kindness that was sheltering gracia-sama from the cutting rain.........she's an important and treasured person after all. Plus isn't it natural for the sword that inherited tadaoki's memories and heart also feels the same love for Gracia?

But also, I felt like there were some places in kiden that were left totally to the viewer's interpretation and I loved that so much bc in history there are always gaps aren't there? we can read facts and biographies etc but we won't truly ever know how the people felt back then, and memory can only serve for so long before it disintegrates. a human heart is such a hard thing to capture, and kiden wonderfully incorporates that as its main message.

I loved the interlude music at this point, it was soft and felt like a moment out of a fairytale. god im using such sappy words but I can't help it it really was that amazing.

And then kasen moves away to the shadows and gracia in the spotlight, looking like she expected someone to be there, but wasn't ...and then she bows, and then kasen spins and comes to the front, again, like he was searching for someone who left just before he arrived ..... stepping down slowly as he sings the song to himself seemingly lost in his own thoughts......and that's when I realized: the ending song IS his song. he's the only one mouthing the words. コレが歌仙兼定の歌！THIS IS WHAT HE WANTED TO SING TO US! EVER SINCE KAHAKUGEKI TWO YEARS AGO. HE WROTE THE LYRICS HIMSELF, POURING OUT ALL HIS CONFUSION AND LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE, AND HES SINGING THE POEM OF KASEN KANESADA TO US ;;;;;

I read a saniwa's impression about the ED song being created by kasen while incorporating kotegiri's affinity for modern songs, bc the ED is completely not the type of song they'd sing in those times, and I really like this interpretation; it Does feel like something kasen would do, esp since he's grown more accepting towards all art forms and post-kiwame his need to express himself has immensely grown.

kokindenjunotachi, jizou, shishiou, kikkou, nikkari, kotegiri, chougi and kasen bowing in kiden was like healing a lost soul. they finally made it. They made it!!! all 46 performances, without a single cancellation, something they've been waiting two years for!!!!!!!!!! Its just. Too many feelings at once .
