i feel like uty improves on things undertale did but it doesnt have the same strong foundation as the original. like all the qol tweaks and secret shit and meta flowey are all super impressive but as a whole i agree i didnt find it cohesive or consistent

eh, sorry but i don't really think UTY "improves" much of... anything from Undertale? you can make an argument for the visuals, which are more detailed and certainly better animated, but i would argue right back that undertale's rougher, retro, "kinda ugly" graphics are a deliberate design choice on Toby's part that he stuck to for a reason. not to mention, even in their ugliness, the original main cast managed to display more variety in shape language and size than the entire UTY one, which seemed unable to break past the "tall, skinny, anime proportioned humanoid" figure for anyone beyond the occasional side NPC (which, credit where it is due, DID have some really creative designs).

the secret shit is part of my critiques, actually! while conceptually cool, i don't think they appropriately distributed their story and lore at all. i feel like if we got to the end of the pacifist run and were wholly confused as to why dalv was even a character in the story, the whole "human attack" backstory was... not delivered properly. now, there's no problem with having secret lore, gaster is right there. but if you DO have it then it shouldn't be... yknow... tied to the main backstory conflict that literally set the story in motion? lol? it felt like a game with dataminers in mind, rather than players. which was unavoidably detrimental to its storytelling.

the bullet patterns and attack designs were very visually creative but what they improved from the original in their cleverness they tanked with their execution. WAYYY too unfair, counting too much on memorization and giving you no time to accustom yourself to the mechanics (shout-out to the gun tutorial that... didn't teach us how to shoot. at all. we figured it out on our own in the axis fight LMFAO)

the meta flowey stuff was a fun idea that only really delivered in the neutral run and didn't amount to enough anywhere else to justify his presence in the game imo. like, i lost my shit during his fight too, don't get me wrong, i like when fan stories let him be a little FREAK. but everything else was just so... wasted? i almost didn't see the neutral ending at all because the way pacifist handled flowey disappointed me so much.

uhhhhh running was a good addition and the music fucked hard. can't say anything against those two, nossir. not sure it'd go so far as to call them improvements tho, just nice touches

New DCTL Graphic Novel Pages Look Bad

Whose surprised? New ones got released just today, they're bad too! Look at them under the cut while I ramble a bit

Dot's skinny and generic looking, that's a shame but at this point I'm not surprised but dear god is someone allergic to establishing shots here? It's so hard to keep track of where the characters are, I feel like they just keep teleporting around and I have no idea where anything is in relation to each other?

Also yikes that pig nose Buddy gets in what I assume is an attempt at him looking up? But none of his other facial features inticate that sort of camera angle.

Violinist seems to have just, teleported in, alongside an ink demon that looks stupid [the pose is weird n wonky the proportions look awful] and is the wrong design! So time to become a lot more annoying about how bad BATDR's ink demon design is,,, great-

I like how lively and wispy the ink looks though, very much feels alive in a way I like. Violinist is creepy even though I have no idea what's going on [where she came from, what those poses are? What is even happening here tbh] Everything else though,,, the piss yellow colors used with only pure white highlights + pure black shadows, the fact it's not even sketchy or remotely close to Batim's actual art style [despite how confusing it is they chose to stick closer to batim's when they already retconned the ink demon design from that, why not go the full way and let the pallete be more diverse like BATDR's at that point?]

It's bad, dear god... Can we all agree to just pirate the shit out of this instead of finachially rewarding Mike n Meatly for overworking and underpaying this poor artist? They don't deserve to have this shit stain on their portfolio when all they probably needed was more time to work on it to make it better and read the book to actually Understand the characters, etc.

To put bluntly my expectations have reached the floor, sadly Mike and Meatly are very good with shovels so I ended up upset anyways.

clothes in grumpus society would be pretty hard to get for two main reasons:

grumpuses have wildly different proportions from eachother which makes it basically impossible to mass produce clothes, that means the only way to get well-fitting clothes is to go to a tailor or seamstress

clothes are completely optional and usually unnecessary when you have fur, which adds to the first point that mass producing clothes would not be profitable

this means that when a character wears clothes thats a big deal and it could say alot about them

now that I've explained my thought process, here are my headcanons about every character that wears clothes (not counting hats or other accessories):

Wambus: the vest helps block direct sunlight when working outside for long periods of time, he got it custom made before the expedition.

Gramble: he wears a sweater because he has patchy fur from stress, and his pets getting eaten probably didn't help, he knit the sweater himself.

Wiggle: in the credits artwork she is wearing what looks like a fur coat, she probably has more clothes like this because she's a celebrity, idk I don't have much to say here.

Triffany: same as Wambus, the jacket protects from the sun and has lots of pockets to hold tools or shiny things, she got it custom made.

Chandlo: the tank top is the only item of clothing he has and the only reason he wears it is because he thought it wold be unprofessional to be undressed, he got it when he used to play for a baskesball team.

Snorpy: in the credits artwork he is wearing a tank top and shorts, this is important because he is the only character that wears a full set of clothes in the whole game. he naturally has thin fur (in the dlc he talks about putting on sunscreen) and he has been losing fur from stress about the Grumpinati, he got the clothes custom made after returning from snaktooth. as for the apron, it is one of the things that can be mass produced because the only thing that needs adjusting is the straps.

Shelda: in the credits artwork she is wearing a long sleeve sweater, she is old, skinny and is probably loosing fur so it's not a surprise that she gets cold easily, she got the sweater as a gift from a family relative, she also had it with her at snaktooth but never wore it because she spent most of her time in the desert.

Floofty: in the credits artwork they are wearing a lab coat, the only thing confusing about that is why they didn't wear lab coat at snaktooth, it is important protection when doing experiments and it totally makes sense to get one custom made. my reasoning is that floofty isn't really the "safety first" kind of person and they never got any serious injuries from an experiment gone wrong so they just didn't bother, but when they became a teacher/professor they started wearing a lab coat to set an example for students who are more likely to mess up and get hurt.

eggabell and lizbert are wearing matching shirts in one of the photos in their hut, they got them for their anniversary. the shirts don't have a purpose egg and liz are just cheesy like that

SPOILERS FOR DLC UNDER CUT

alegander wears a sweater in the image we see of him. we dont know much about him so I don't have many thoughts

maybe the triplicate space is cold, maybe he wanted to look professional, maybe that's an old photo and he doesn't wear that sweater anymore.

same thing for how he got it, maybe he has someone close to him who made it for him, maybe he stole it from gramble, maybe he just cares alot about how he looks so he had lots of clothes unrelated to the snakolytes

Filbo, beffica, cromdo and clumby don't wear clothes

an extra headcanon is that when grumpuses get wet they feel naked because their fur sticks to their body. this explains why snorpy got clothes for working out, but this could also be used an excuse for why swimming clothes would exist for grumpuses

I know that they missed HSY's beauty spot, made everyone look the same and made KDJ into a standard hotboy protagonist when he should be a swagless rat.

but I wanna know what else you've got since you can probably articulate it all better than me.

This is a terrible question with terrible timing because I am so busy right now but briefly because I am a little hater at heart—

I will preface this by saying that I stopped reading the webtoon after a few weeks out of disgust because I didn't like it and continue to dislike it. I've seen screenshots of it since I stopped, particularly because a few of my friends do keep up with it (they are aware that I am a hater and allow me my little rants) and am aware of character designs due to the influx of screenshots and art that arises on my TL and dash (never tagged so I can't even filter it out) whenever a new face pops up in the webtoon. So, that's where I'm coming from with this. If you like the webtoon then this is where you stop reading because I am going to be pretty blunt here. All of the following is my own personal opinion about the ORV webtoon yadda yadda if you get butthurt that's on you.

First: I hate the character designs. I can excuse little details like missing the beauty mark or whatever because it's not actually in-text canon but this goes deeper. As you mentioned, all of the characters have the same generic body type. The women, especially, suffer from this. Han Sooyoung's proportions are so wacky at times. I swear the artists have no idea how to draw short people. with characters like Lee Hyunsung it's particularly egregious. Someone who's described as bear-like is depicted as skinny. Yoo Joonghyuk's muscles are like. Non-existent. Beyond that, everyone is paper pale and washed out. There's very little variation in skin tones, so they all look like vampire standees. Some of the side characters look better than the main cast. the outfits don't reflect characters' personalities or ages either.

Second: general gripes re: the art not being dynamic, emotive or fun to look at. static expressions on character faces. fighting scenes are boring. more griping about the incredibly limited colour palette. you get the gist.

Third: kdj looking like pretty much every single hotboy protag. This one is particularly due to redice's work on solo levelling—kdj could be a stand in for the mc of that manhwa honestly. The point of kdj is that he's an average dude, not some wish fulfillment powerlevelling harem protag. Instead it feels like the artists have a hard on for kdj like the art is so horny for him at times it's off-putting.

Fourth: the official webtoon TL is awful. I know there are fan TLs but those aren't what the vast majority of casual readers are going to find first. the romanisation of the names, the lack of ANY kind of honorifics, the absolute horror that is TWSA like what the fuck kind of acronym is that—im going to stop because this isn't about the manhwa itself.

Fifth: this is probably the point that erks me the most. I could excuse sucky art. I would wish to my heart of hearts that they picked an orv fanartist to the webtoon instead but I get it, they wanted a studio that had demonstrated the capacity to work to the bone and churn out chapters with no love embedded in them. I would get that. but the webtoon does nothing as an adaptation of orv.

see, the thing is that orv on its own is hardly ground breaking. the conceit is that s&s took established webnovel tropes and put it all together in a well grounded commentary that actually said something important about stories. that was clearly a dedication to readers and writers and the binds between them. That used the fact that readers would be familiar with these concepts to turn those same expectations on its head. ORV is so great because of its metatextual approach, the breaking of the 4th wall in so many ways to truly build it into something more. The webtoon does nothing to work with that. I had hoped that it could use the medium to add something to the interaction between the reader and Reader (독자) but it's nothing but a tired copy of the novel that does nothing to convey the nuances of KDJ's internal narrative, the emotional turmoil that makes it so hard hitting, or the metatextual nature of its premise. I've talked before about the ways that they could have adapted it to take advantage of the comic format but the webtoon fails to do Anything with the medium.

There are probably other things I've missed but like I said you caught me at a bad time lol. I really try to forget the webtoon exists for the most part because I have nothing good to say about it <3

Anyway, if you want to read a manhwa that actually makes you excited to look at it with amazing character design and dynamic fighting scenes that made me sob like a baby, check out sss-class regression hunter (prev called sss-class suicide hunter) DONT read the official TL because they decided to Anglicize the name of the protag (Kim Gongja) as Confucius Kim which is ugh on so many levels.

Yk I really love Zed_Technician's games and how they manage to make characters that feel like they're real people, going through real things, especially when they tie themes of poverty and trying to get by with what you have and having these characters trying to support each other through hard times not only in their daily lives, but also in the dire situations they're put in

I also love how they make older people the protagonists of these games, especially plus sized older women, considering A.) older women are hardly ever given the respect they deserve, B.) plus sized people are hardly ever given any representation or respect, and C.) in this age and especially in this economy, it's common for people in poverty to be plus sized due to lack of access to produce and healthier foods due to increasing prices and having to work all the time.

That's why I honestly find it tiring seeing people act so strange whenever they see the character designs from these games, either with disgust and repulsion or acting like they're "dirty" or "sexual" just on the basis that they're plus sized. It's like these people have never seen a plus sized person in their life except for in porn or other things like that, or maybe they have and they just don't treat them with respect.

It sucks because there are so many plus sized people that look like that (obviously not exactly the same, bc, you know, cartoon proportions, but at least similar). It sucks cuz I have family members that are plus sized as well as loved ones, and it sucks just seeing people act the way they do whenever they see someone that isn't skinny, yk?

Sorry if it got ranty towards the end but- I really do like these games, I really do like these characters and the way they are written, and I hope we get to a point where people stop acting so odd about plus sized characters in games. This dev is doing a lot of interesting things and I really do look forward to seeing anything new they create!

let’s be honest it was only a matter of time before i babygirlified an old man

closeups and (many) design notes under the cut :)

ok design notes time (these r mainly for the narrator bc. well. stanley has an actual physical appearance):

- while thinking of how to design the narrator i got the idea that he took one of the models in the audience for the ending where stanley gives a speech and edited it to make his “human” form

- because of this i wanted to include a bunch of little things that he “got wrong” during the process of mimicking a human. most of them get ironed out when stanley points out how weird they are but some of them stay

- to name a couple, his teeth are all flat- no canines or molars. also his little headset + glasses have nothing that actually attach them to his head. they just Are There. not to mention his interesting fashion sense of tie + turtleneck + blazer (he defends this choice no matter how much stanley laughs at him). he’s just weird enough to be slightly uncanny- it’s an imitation, not the real thing

- since i’m indecisive as hell he’s a bit of a shapeshifter. he actually doesn’t use his physical model in-game a lot and tends to just show up in things. shadows, reflective surfaces, screens, etc. even more often than that he’s just his voice

- bc he plays the guitar in the out of bounds ending i am now convinced that he can play many instruments. that little piano in the memory zone before the first review? yeah he’s there playing that in-game he’s just not visible to you

- designing his hair was SO DIFFICULT i literally went searching thru the tag for inspo and i liked so many different things. after a struggle (you can see a slicked-back attempt in the shadow idea doodle) i eventually decided on the style shown in his main drawing. every time i draw it i fight so hard to make it distinct from miles edgeworth. to make this easier the cowlicks aren’t too pronounced and the larger bang is more of a fringe. it still sometimes looks like miles edgeworth whoops

- some of my favorite fanon design things are the Line™ tie the square glasses and the little gay ass highlight so i knew i had to include them. those were my only definite choices going into this

- once again bc i’m indecisive the narrator can scale his model up or down as he pleases. he prefers to be bigger than stanley but stanley complains that it “makes his proportions weird” because he’s “short-coded” so sometimes he goes to a more human size.

- the narrator being stout just makes sense to me it’s correct in my soul (i actually think i drew him too skinny in most of these. i just didn’t wanna redraw shit bc i am tired but if/when i draw him again he will be less skinny)

- i wanted to work with shape language a lot because the narrator’s whole character is a voice- i wanted to make sure i captured the vibe of some stuffy old writer who has an undeniable silly streak. so he is squares and circles (his tie is the only triangle save for maybe the hair)

- for similar reasons stanley is squares and triangles. felt right

- speaking of stanley his soul patch is a goatee now bc i hate soul patches with a boiling passion. so now it’s a goatee

- i also gave him a little beauty mark by his right eye. i don’t know why i just knew in my heart that it was correct

- stanley uses asl and not bsl because i want to learn asl sososososo bad and this just might be the thing to get me to actually do it. he can project his thoughts to the narrator but he doesn’t like it so he almost always signs

Oh, and I really appreciate Pichelli's take on the new costume. This is no shade whatsoever to Dauterman, I love all of his work, but one of the first things I thought when I saw his new design for Wanda was a lot of artists are going to have a hard time drawing it. The hair is obviously going to be a technical challenge for some people, but I think there's a lot of awkwardness in the neckline and the shape of the shoulder cutouts, as well as the the way the bodice transitions from skintight materal to drapery at her waist. Even the proportion of the headpiece is a little unusual. It looks great when Russel draws it, but it might not fit well into everybody's style, especially those skinny little skirt panels. They do not lend themselves to dynamic movement.

Anyways, Pichelli tweaked it juuuuuuust enough and it looks great, and moves really well, in all the interiors. And I think issue #5 is going to look amazing, too. Dauterman's interiors never disappoint, and I'm super excited to see him back on a fantasy comic.

Hey! Uh, I've been struggling with ED since my childhood, and I think I have it somewhat under control at this point (I'm 22), but the thoughts tend to get a lot worse real fast when I notice any kind of change happening to my body and/or when I'm stressed and/or feel disconnected from my body. Either I've put on some weight lately or I'm just bloated due to being stressed to hell and back and getting very little sleep in the past week (both due to a death in the family), the reason doesn't really matter because all my brain sees is that my cheekbones aren't as prominent as usual and my body doesn't seem as petite.

I keep thinking that if I have a square figure (I don't know if it's true, but in my mind whenever I put on weight it all goes to my waist and nowhere else and makes me look like a square instead of a hour glass), I can no longer wear feminine clothes and that they will look awful on me and everyone will laugh at me.

I was also raised with the idea that my body is one of the few things I have going for me and that there is a "right" way for a body to be, and that "correct" way is 90-60-90 proportions, so when I feel like I'm getting more squarish I also start thinking "Nobody will ever love me if they see me naked like this. They will think 'Oh. That looked way more ok dressed up. I don't want a rectangle for a partner, a woman is supposed to have killer curves and a thigh gap and be skinny with a completely flat stomach. What IS that? I'm out.' and they'll leave me and they'll tell everyone and then everyone will laugh at me whenever I go outside."

I think that my problems also tend to get worse when someone shows interest in me? Last year I had to break up with a guy because I relapsed when we started dating and it got worse and worse the longer our relationship lasted. When I am alone and nobody expects to see my body and I don't have to look at my body, I think it's generally better. But I am starting to date again now and I thought it would be fine because they also struggle with ED, so I thought that I wouldn't worry as much because I'd know that they know what it's like and I wouldn't feel like I have to perform some sort of ultra-skinny ultra-hourglass standard, but I guess that is not true. Because along with everything above I very much do feel like I need to be ultra-skinny and ultra-hourglass for them and am terrified of them possibly wanting to see me naked, especially so because as I said I have noticed a minor change in my body and now I'm convinced it's a huge change and a bad one. I haven't told them about any of this tho because I know that it's a deranged thing to think.

I'm honestly not sure about what I need/want from you. I guess any kind of affirmation or advice would be nice. And I'm sorry that this got so long.

Hi, anon, that's quite a vent you have there! I can tell you've been struggling with this stuff for quite some time. While I am choosing to answer this ask, I would like to put a gentle reminder not to put specific numbers, like weights, body measurements, calorie counts etc in posts as this can sometimes be triggering to others.

So my advice to you may be hard to follow, because of course you're going to want to body-check yourself if your body size has been seen as your best accomplishment, but constant body-checking is a compulsive behavior common in restrictive EDs. I would recommend you refrain from weighing yourself, and only look in the mirror as much as you need to brush your teeth, wash your face, check hair, makeup, clothes etc. If you catch yourself scrutinizing your appearance for weight changes, try to catch yourself. Ask yourself what you need to do in order to redirect to a healthier line of thinking. You identify that you have been taught to see your greatest worth in your body. Perhaps you could take this time to affirm to yourself your worth in other areas, or engage in an activity away from mirrors that helps you connect with yourself. That way you can be reconnected with a sense of your true worth. Don't be discouraged if it's hard at first, these things take time.

You especially need to practice giving yourself grace at times like these, when you are highly stressed out. Bodies change in life and that is a natural phenomenon, not a moral failing. Bodies are especially prone to change during these times of high stress. But you are a living human being who's recently had a loss in the family. You deserve gentleness and time to grieve, not pressure to make your body stay palatable during hard times.

Maybe it could be a good idea to step back from the idea of dating for a bit of time while you reconnect with yourself and your sense of worth. It's hard, I know, but I hope that one day you are able to find someone who you trust enough that you can have honest conversations about this, ideally prior to any bedroom activities. Someone you can talk to about what you need to feel worthy and desired by them. Someone will put effort into doing what you need them to do. There are so many people with different bodies in this world, some single, some in relationships, some in queerplatonic partnerships, but so many different people are finding out ways they can be loved in their bodies, and I hope you can be one of them. It will take time and practice and setbacks, so stay patient with yourself.

I also hope that you one day are able to build such confidence and respect for yourself that you would loudly kick anyone out of your bedroom who dared to tell you they disliked something about your body.

It's true, you can't always trust the influences around you to give you a healthy perspective on your worth outside your body shape. It sounds like that's something you've experienced in your life. Not everybody is going to be a positive influence, so it's up to you to be your own primary positive influence and look within yourself for points of personal worth when you start hear people bringing up your body.

Oh, and I recommend you keep writing. Sometimes it just helps to get it all out, and even gets some stuff processed in your head!

glance: At first glance, what stands out most about your OC's appearance? What's their distinguishing feature?

THE HAIR. jailbird's hair is a defining feature. i actually made a little list of jailbird's most prominent features recently.

i still think the hair is probably his most defining feature, though it's pretty similar to glory's. i still think their silhouettes are distinct, though -- glory's hair is more coily, jb's is a little looser.

face: Describe your OC's face. What's their smile like? Are their orbs cerulean? What would someone notice first when looking at them?

still got baby fat. when he grows up, it's a little more angular, especially in the chin area, but he's always kind of got soft cheeks. he's got kind of a perma-scowl going on most of the time. when he does smile it's usually kind of malicious in nature. he has braces.

stature: What's your OC's body type? How tall are they? Do they wear clothing to accentuate their look or do they try to mask it?

skinny. skiiiiiiinny. jailbird isn't really malnourished, though he could probably stand to eat a little better, but he is scrawny. very gangly. every time i draw him i think his proportions lead people to believe he's much taller than he actually is: at the start of the story, he's about 5'1, and by the end he's about 5'4. in the epilogue, his adult height is roughly 5'7. his civvy clothing is intentionally pretty baggy and layered to give the impression of more meat on his bones.

motion: How does your OC move? How does their clothing help or hinder their range of motion? Are they flexible, coordinated, clumsy?

jailbird is extremely flexible. think somewhere between a contortionist and a gymnast. he tends to move very quickly and always seems like he's in a hurry.

stillness: How does your OC act while still? Are they fidgety? Do they have any common gestures or tics? Does their clothing affect how they hold themselves while at rest?

jailbird is actually very good at sitting still. he has no problems with it. he can sit unmoving for as long as it takes, but only if he's doing it of his own volition. if you ask him to sit still, he gets huffy about it.

canvas: Does your OC have any scars, piercings, tattoos, or other markings? Do they display or cover them up at all?

jailbird has his ears pierced. i'm struggling to think of any tattoos he might want as an adult. he gets a WHOLE LOT OF SCARS during his time as a supervillain, the most notable of which is A MASSIVE SCAR ON HIS ABDOMENT from when he gets impaled on his own harpoon. Best birthday ever!

silk pajama set. monogrammed. Actually im laughing really hard at the image of him getting them monogrammed with "JV" because thats probably not what his "actual" initials are

day: What does your OC wear on a normal day? Why do they default to those clothes? Do they wear similar things, or do they change it up?

i've noted this in his character sheet:

generally, any t-shirt over any turtleneck, bonus points if red yellow black and white. this is really consistent in most if not all art of him.

you can even see it in haircut! red outline is apron, blue is shirt, green is turtleneck.

as a fun design note, the school colors were intentionally chosen to oppose he and eugene's natural red motifs. something about institutional repression of individualism... i can't remember my exact justification for it, but i know it was something like that.

formal: What's your OC's formal look? Do they like dressing up? Do they have different looks for different occasions?

jailbird's not a huge fan of fancy events. he gets dragged to them sometimes but otherwise wants to avoid the public eye. i'd say the most you'll get him in aside from his school uniform is a t-shirt, slacks, and a blazer.

informal: What's your OC's lazy-day look? How do they like to dress when they're winding down?

he's wearing it in haircut:

bunny socks are a feature that i outlined kind of as a joke while drafting haircut, but i liked the idea so much that they stuck around. anyway, it's his usual upper half with a pair of sweatpants or just loose cotton pants.

outerwear: What's your OC's outerwear situation? Jacket, sweater, cloak? What sort of weather do they deal with most and how do they protect themselves?

depends on the season. most of the time he'll forgo it. in the winter he gets what he's wearing in this picture:

(he's the one in the middle complaining.) he gets cold easily.

footwear: What does your OC wear on their feet?

combat boots or converse sneakers. when in costume he has those big knee high platforms. scary!

road: What does your OC wear while traveling? Do they have high-quality equipment, or are they making do? What does their gear look like?

jailbird doesn't really travel that much! if he did, he'd way overpack and use the most expensive equipment known to man. it would piss everyone off.

armor: What kind of armor does your OC wear? Is it well kept? Bonus: where does it come from? Is there a story behind it?

jailbird has padding under his suit. it's supposed to be at least somewhat bulletproof, though that's only on the chest and head. he learns after the "harpoon to the gut" incident why full body armor is likely a good idea. he also has elbow pads and the mask functions as a helmet.

arms: Does your OC have any weapons? What weapons do they carry, and how do they wear them when they're not fighting?

oh yes. Ohhh yes. one of my favorite jailbird gimmicks is his bottomless pouches -- he can store almost anything that will fit through the opening in them. however, he has only a rudimentary ability to control what he pulls out. the more he uses an item, the easier it is to find which is why his harpoon gun is easy and why it fits -- it's huge, but it's relatively narrow and can fit into the biggest pouch on his side, and it's his favorite weapon, so it's no problem.

roots: Is your OC's look inspired by any specific style of clothing or fashion trend? What are the roots and/or inspiration for their look?

not really? he's sort of loosely inspired by mall goth fashion, but that's more to do with color schemes than anything else. if i had to assign an actual aesthetic to specifically his way of dress, i guess it would be skater culture. which is funny, because he's not the skater of the team! eugene is! and eugene's aesthetics are based more on grunge and punk!

texture: Does your OC favor any specific kinds of cloth or textures? Is there anything they can't wear or don't like? What sort of fabrics do they prefer?

jailbird prefers his clothing to be baggier and looser. his costume is built for agility and speed, so he's willing to sacrifice comfort for function. his mental state is also in a pretty different place when it comes to civs vs costume.

wardrobe: How big is your character's wardrobe? Do they wear things threadbare, or can they afford new clothes often? Are they any good at mending and repairing their own clothing?

pretty big. i don't think jailbird buys new clothes very often, and he's really good at sewing and repairs. i think the only thing he probably has to get taken in or buy replacements of are his shoes. everything else he can usually fix on his own.

makeup: Does your OC wear makeup? How often? What kind? Why do they wear makeup, and do they like it?

yes, all the time. jailbird always has some level of black eyeliner and eyeshadow on. it's heavier in costume, blacking out the space around his eyes, but he wears it all the time. he just likes the way it looks.

favorite: Does your OC have a favorite article of clothing or accessory? What is it? What's the meaning behind it? Do they wear it all the time or do they wear it sparingly to keep it safe?

the magen david eugene gives him quickly becomes very important to him. aside from that, it's his fingerless gloves. never seen without them.

change: Has your OC ever drastically changed their appearance? Significant haircuts, big tattoos, complete wardrobe swap, etc? Why? How do they feel about the change?

nope. not really, at least. in the epilogue, he's old enough to grow facial hair, and he starts wearing short sleeves. and grows his hair out some. but he's still the same old jailbird. he feels neutrally about it.

alternate: What would your OC's alternate universe look be? If they're a fantasy character, what's their modern look? If they're sci-fi, what's their fantasy look? What AU would you want to see your OC in, and how would they dress themself? Bonus: Prompt an AU!

i've mentioned before the concept of the vey in tremont, which are a type of superhero predestined to die a violent, brutal death usually as a result of their own powers or hubris. when initially writing the basic concepts of new blood, especially for the characters, i considered making jailbird vey, and then decided against it for a number of reasons (mostly because i felt that in jailbird's case, it would lean too heavily into capital punishment), but it's sort of stuck with me ever since. i think it would be a lot of the same, except as soon as jailbird realized he was vey, he would construct and detonate a nuclear bomb.

if i had to put him in any other genre, i think he'd be funny in high fantasy. specifically in any kind of dnd setting. oh man. he'd be the world's most annoying warlock.

ed rant: friends and jealousy

the hardest part about having an ed is it can really make your friendships strained. i’m in my early 20s and so is my best friend i’ve been close with for about 10 years now. we’re like sisters.

we used to be the opposite of how we are now. i was obese, and she was like a model: stick thin, blonde, tan, beautiful. everyone always gawked at her. i was like the fat comic relief friend, nobody ever flirted with me at parties or gave me the time of day. her on the other hand, she had every boy at her beck and call.

i’m the past two years, a lot has changed. she’s gained a lot of weight, settled down and married. with a full time job and a long term partner, her eating habits have changed and she doesn’t go to the gym anymore like she used to daily. i think she still looks very average in terms of her bmi and proportions, not fat at all, probably around a size 10/12, but she obviously has a hard time with it when she compares herself to how she used to be.

it’s even harder now that i’m skinny. i’m not bonespo or anything, but i’m smaller than most where i live and the smallest of all our friend group. she’s lately started making strange playfully aggressive remarks about how i should eat more if i want an ass like hers, how i’m going to fly away in the wind, how i looked fine when i was bigger, etc.. she even got annoyed with me that i ordered a salad over fried fish platter the other night we went out…

i love this friend more than anything, and i know she feels the same, i think it’s just difficult for her, like maybe she’s jealous that she’s no longer the pretty skinny one. it’s hard for me because i still think she’s beautiful, but she seems to resent the attention i get for being smaller than her. the other day, a man catcalled me (gross) and she went on and on about how he was looking at her, talking to her, how she’s always having dudes check her out all the time when we’re out. it was just weird. i didn’t correct her obviously because that would be mean and catty, but it makes me feel…just weird.

i don’t like thinking about my best friend having some weird grudge against me for “glowing up” all because she gained weight instead. it’s weird what ed will do to your relationships.

she can say i seemed “happier” or “looked better” when i was fat, but i feel the prettiest and most confident as i am now. i just hate that she can’t accept it.

i'm not the previous short anon but God, i feel her. i'm around 5'1 and i feel like everything fits me weirdly. i'm skinny but i have slightly round thighs and i'm a d cup. i wouldn't consider my boobs to be big but they definitely stand out against the rest of my frame, which makes them look larger than they would on someone that was say, 5'7. my older sister is slightly taller than me and far more in proportion for her height + her legs are long. when we were younger i was jealous of her flat chest and she was jealous of my curves which is funny and ironic. she tailors her clothes and i'm honestly considering doing the same at this point as it's so hard to find things that fit me properly

also your advice is spot on. i used to wear very short heels and even the slight difference to my height helped my legs look far longer than they were. it rains heavily all year round where i'm from so i had to stop, but they made a huge difference at the time.

Yes! Tailoring is so important in general, but especially if you're petite. It makes a huge difference in how clothes look on your frame and it's actually pretty affordable, especially if you tailor pieces that you're going to wear all the time. Also, FWIW, some companies do make rain boots with a heel- I have a pair of Hunter boots with a wedge heel, and I've seen a few Chelsea style rainboots as well. Obviously you don't need to buy rainboots that have a heel, but if it makes you feel more confident, it is an option.

Smurfs WIPs I'll never post

#3- An attempted Movie 1 rewrite

In a lush green forest, in a place that would later be known as Belgium, there was a clearing, hidden away from the rest of the world. In that clearing, there were many little houses that seemed to be made of mushrooms. And in those mushrooms, lived the Smurfs. Each and every Smurf played a special part in daily life, even if their part wasn't immediately evident.

Clumsy Smurf was one of these Smurfs who did not seem useful at first glance. Especially with his name, which he had gained due to how, well, how clumsy he was. He was quite tall and skinny for a Smurf, but with the same large feet as the rest of them, leading him to often trip over himself. Even before he had hit a growth spurt, he had still been awkward and clumsy, and some believed there was simply something wrong with his balance. Clumsy was clumsy not only in his actions but in his words, often saying the wrong thing and causing problems. But despite all the hardships he faced, this young Smurf kept an optimistic view of the world. His best friend would blame this on his low intelligence, but Clumsy simply saw the best in everyone and every situation.

What exactly is a Smurf? I suppose that deserves some explanation. Smurfs have always been afraid of humans, hiding away whenever they come near. Smurfs are a little people, averaging three apples tall- or that's what they say, anyways. They have blue skin, are inclined to go shirtless, and wear Phrygian caps which they rarely remove. Smurfs speak in a strange dialect that is hard to understand. They reach adulthood at 150 years old, but remain childlike long beyond that, both in their proportions and in their desire to celebrate any occasion they can.

One of these celebrations was happening soon, the Festival of the Full Moon, and it was the preparations for that that Clumsy Smurf was heading toward. Despite its name, this festival only happened on the rare occasions that the moon was predicted to be blue, which did not happen often without new Smurfs being born. (It would be another few hundred years until more Smurfs were born, which made this quite a rare occasion indeed.)

On his rush to these preparations, Clumsy was almost a force of nature as he stumbled over everything in his way. One of the Smurfs he crashed into was Handy Smurf. Handy was up on a ladder, fixing a roof, when Clumsy ran by and knocked the ladder to the ground. Handy yelled out in surprise, and Clumsy winced.

"Gosh, I'm sorry, Handy!" he said, although it sounded more like "Ah'm sorry," due to his strange voice. A voice with an accent that people nowadays would easily recognize as a southern American accent, but this was medieval Europe, and America didn't exist yet.

"No problem, Clumsy!" Handy called back, "you keep me employed!"

As Clumsy turned back to wave goodbye to Handy, he tripped up onto a barrel lying in his path. The barrel went rolling and so did Clumsy, Smurfs diving out of the way to avoid him. Baker Smurf, however, who was carrying enough pies to block his line of sight, did not see or hear Clumsy in time. The rolling Smurf bumped into him, sending the pies flying. As Clumsy fell off the barrel, he stepped in one of the pies that had fallen.

"Hey, Baker, nice pies, sorry!" Clumsy said, shaking his foot to try and get the pie off of it.

"No worries, Clumsy," Baker said with a sigh that indicated there were indeed many worries.

The next thing Clumsy tripped over was a banner two Smurfs were carrying through the village, which he bounced off of, landing in a wheelbarrow that went rolling. He then crashed into Chef Smurf, who was carrying some flatbread through the village. Chef fell into the wheelbarrow as well.

"Hey, Chef Smurf!" Clumsy greeted.

"Clumsy, what are you doing-a?!" Chef Smurf yelled, trying to climb out without ruining the flatbread he was carrying. He finally managed to climb out- just as they passed Sculptor Smurf, working on an ice sculpture. Chef crashed right into the sculpture, sending ice everywhere.

"Whoa," he said, looking at the ice that had landed on the flatbread. "Freezing food-a! Now that's an idea!"

Clumsy continued on his disastrous ride through the village. "Smurf out of th' way!" He yelled. His wheelbarrow rammed into a table, sending Clumsy flying and crashing right into the door of a house, where he finally came to a halt. He looked up, rubbing his head where he'd crashed into the doorway.

"Wow, Clumsy," Jokey said, opening his door and stepping outside, "that was sure funny!"

Clumsy laughed weakly. "Yeah, it is."

"Here, I got you a surprise!" Jokey said, holding out a yellow gift box to Clumsy. It was tied with a red ribbon.

"Thanks, Jokey, but I'll have t'open it later!" Clumsy said, scrambling to his feet and continuing on his run. "I'm really busy right now!" Unbeknownst to him, he'd somehow loosened the ribbon as he ran on, making the present blow up in Jokey's face. Jokey cackled.

"Still funny!"

The stage in the village, usually used for Smurf Village Theater Productions or for the Music Festival, had been roped off in order for Smurfs to practice the Dance of a Hundred Smurfs they would do to celebrate the blue moon. Two Smurfs stood where the ropes ended, acting almost as bouncers. The left, Hefty Smurf, had a red heart tattoo on both of his upper arms. The right, Gutsy Smurf, had a blue pom-pom on his hat. Both were built sturdily, a sharp contrast to the tall and lanky Clumsy Smurf.

"Hey, Hefty! Hey, Gutsy!" Clumsy said, running up to them. Hefty grabbed him to halt him before he could run over to the stage.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow your roll."

"Gee, but ain't that the rehearsal fer the Full Moon Festival?" Clumsy asked.

"Sorry, Clumsy, but you're not on the list." Hefty said, shrugging.

"Whaddya mean, not on th' list?" Clumsy asked. "Th' Dance of a Hunnered Smurfs needs all the Smurfs it can get, right? And look." He pointed to the clipboard Gutsy was holding. "It says my name right there!"

"Richt," Gutsy said. "Under 'do nae let in Clumsy!'"

Like Clumsy, Gutsy also had a strange accent. His was Scottish, and thick enough that it was hard for many smurfs to understand him. Unlike Clumsy, the place Gutsy's accent came from did actually exist. Despite never having been to Scotland, Gutsy considered himself a proud Scotssmurf. He had gained his name from his courageous behavior, behavior that bordered on reckless at times. But when he was not leaping into danger or serving as the muscle alongside Hefty, Gutsy could be found reading books about far-off lands. One day, he hoped to finally visit Scotland.

"Uh, clearly you two lack the verbal skills required to explain this predicament succinctly."

"Oh, here we go again," Hefty said, rolling his eyes as Brainy Smurf grabbed the clipboard from Gutsy and pushed the scotssmurf out of the way.

"You see, Clumsy, the other smurfs don't want to dance with you, because they don't want to get injured." Brainy said. This was not the way most Smurfs would have put it, but Brainy was not most Smurfs. The bespectacled Smurf had always been a little odd. Other Smurfs would gossip among themselves that something was wrong with Brainy's brain, for while xe was quite intelligent when it came to subjects such as math and grammar, xe lacked any sort of social skills or the ability to understand what others were feeling. This often lead to xem being rude and annoying. But while Hefty and Gutsy rolled their eyes and prepared to force Brainy to shut up, Clumsy listened intently. Brainy and Clumsy were best friends, after all, and Clumsy trusted his best friend's advice more than he should have.

"Gosh, I don't injure people that much!" Clumsy said, gesturing widely with his arms and smacking both Hefty and Gutsy in their faces.

"Ow!" "Ouch!"

"Uh... whoops." Clumsy stepped out of the way as Brainy smirked, seeming almost happy to see those two hurt.

"That's gonna leave a bruise," Brainy chuckled, pushing xyr glasses higher up on xyr crooked nose as xe walked away. But it was a mistake to turn away from Gutsy and Hefty, as the two strong Smurfs shared a glance and then ran forward to kick xem. Hefty's strength behind the kick sent Brainy flying.

Things in Smurf Village are not as happy and peaceful as one might expect from a society of little singing elf-like folk. Instead of working with Clumsy to find something else he can do, they ban him from the ceremony altogether. Physical violence is used on Brainy for even the most minor of infractions. But the greatest threat to the Smurfs comes not from within their own village, but from outside it. And this threat has a name that all Smurfs but one fear-

Gargamel, the evil wizard.

Don't get me wrong, I love your art it's beautiful, but why, twice now, have you portrayed a canonically fat character as straight sized with added big boobs and big thighs? That's not fat, that's comic style curvy at best. Fat people have rolls, we have stretch marks, and if you're going to draw us, our bodies deserve to be drawn properly just like everyone else's. Why do it at all if youre not going to do it well? You're just proving yourself to be another artist who doesn't care that fat people are also humans deserving of respect and it's so fucking sad man.

okay, first of all i draw tummy and rolls all the time? also i lately have been doing mostly quick sketches and stylized stuff on request, i try to add details like strech marks and body hair when i can.

if you wanna critisise my art it would be nice if you didn't assume bad intentions, i work on proper proportions all the time. i use references, most of them are very skinny and i usually size them up a lot. sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't, that's also why characters i draw vary in sizes.

i try to do all bodies justice, and i care a lot about getting all variations of bodies some love.

i just wanna add, assuming you were talking about donna, that the depicted version is about my size and i am having a very hard time with my body right now. sometimes art is about giving your body some love.

Hunter truly thinks that if he acts aloof and confident enough that Willow will like him and he's *wrong* obviously. Willow doesn't like people who act like they don't care, who are arrogant. However here's the thing: every time he tries to be cool he fucks it up and ends up looking like a huge dork. And Willow *does* like huge dorks.

Willow's growth in this headcanon based scenario needs to be recognised and appreciated because she probably DID kinda like aloof and confident at the time. She was thirteen!! A baby!!! But she's fifteen now and she has decided "actually I'm into whatever bonkers vibes this skinny little freak is giving off" and she is so wise and mature for that.

LOVE Willow being the most sensible and level-headed of all the kids but Hunter will be out here being a geek of epic proportions, a real sad frog of a boy and Willow is just like "If I do not hold his hand immediately I will self destruct."

And its SO good because like!! Hunter being a huge dork was detrimental to him for most of his life. He clearly tried to tone it out because he wanted the Coven Heads to take him seriously but they never did. He wanted to be respected and he couldn't get that if he was a dork. But he eventually learns that he wanted respect so badly, cuz he had already accepted that it was a feasible substitute for being liked. And now?? Holy shit hes able to just be weird and awkward and Willow (And Gus. Can't forget Gus.) is going to like him anyway. He's still having a hard time wrapping his brain around that.

body image cw on this. ok so like there's one thing i keep thinking about as the conversation about barbie is largely dwindling and taking its usual discourse turns. going into the movie i'd seen people specifically weighing in about america ferrera's character's speech near the end, some saying it was like a Truth Spoken, others saying it was way too much, etc. so like, movie happens, we get to this scene, and it's... very practically a beat-for-beat (especially at the opening) redux of the bit of chimamanda ngozi adichie's ted talk that beyonce sampled in flawless. i ASSUME this was intentional. it is almost unthinkable to me that it is not. and i found myself agreeing with the criticisms-- it was a hair too much, and odd from this character's mouth, bombastic in a way the movie wasn't, overeager in a way that the movie seemed to be trying pretty hard to skirt, etc.

but:

1) flawless was huge 10 years ago, and adichie's words seemed a bit more... notable? brave? relevant? then. i hadn't gone into the movie expecting ben shapiro to have been right about its anti-man progressivism, but i was surprised by how dated some of its material felt. [notably, multiple of my christian conservative relatives came out of the whole right wing barbie backlash thinking that "woke" is a meaningless and stupid term to use in that context.] america ferrera's character's speech is a fairly big didactic moment, very strenuous and triumphal, and it's recycling (and defanging, see below) a decade-old pop culture monolith. you might say precious little has changed for women, and i wouldn't really argue with you, but quite a bit has changed in the norms of mainstream feminist discourse; the latter fact feels more relevant to the movie than the former. (case in point: adichie has in the intervening ten years come under fire for transphobia, and most recently made headlines for defending jk rowling.)

2) the barbie speech has the same progress by revision as the excerpt of adichie's speech. this + its starting place (we teach girls to shrink themselves / skinny but not too skinny or whatever it was) is why it's so reminiscent. but, critically, adichie's "x but not too x, y but not too y" bit ends with "otherwise you will threaten the man." america ferrera's character winds up to something like "all that just to be liked!" there's something very strange about that moment, almost bathetic, as if the whole world works on relations of friendliness and likability. i thought at the time the speech would make more sense if it were delivered by barbie as a summation of the world she's found; rather than the assumed matriarchal utopia, she's found this world where just the baseline of being liked (critical to her whole journey) is not guaranteed, and must be fought for. like, barbie is shattered to find herself not liked, and this is a notable baseline for her. it doesn't make sense as a baseline for a real woman who has a real job and real concerns, and it doesn't really make sense as a baseline for a woman in this movie, whose final act can basically be boiled down to something like 'being human is hard, but worth doing'. [for example: all this, just to be respected / to get by / to be treated like a person / to still not be treated like a person.]

3) america ferrera's character's speech is, iirc, the one time in barbie that negative body image actually comes up. the daughter's line about 'making girls hate themselves' doesn't, imo, pass muster: if you were trying to extrapolate what the big issue with barbie was from the movie, 'famously impossible and damaging body proportions, so famous that barbie is a shorthand for this sort of thing, and so impossible that people spent years producing grotesques to illustrate what a human body with barbie proportions would look like' would take some getting to, i think. more apparent in this movie is the idea that barbie has sold children this american-dream-style vision of an egalitarian world where you can be anything you want to be, and then girls have grown up into a world of inequality where this is not true, where there is no matriarchy to protect them, where doll gender politics have no purchase. barbie's world is neat and clean and unthreatening, the real world is none of these things. that's, like, the most surface level thing going on there.

given that the long speech about the plight of women begins with weight-- and thus suggests that it is if not the foremost issue that faces women, at least the first one that springs to the character's mind-- this is quite weird. presumably mattel did not want to highlight the fact that barbie was the face of eating disorders for many middle school health classes. and there's also something very funny about how this speech observes (a very instagram-fuelled observation, i think) that healthy is the new hat that skinny wears; a line delivered to margot robbie's barbie who i think quite notably does not have the standard barbie body. (by this i mean she is average height and appears to have the normal set of organs, a functional spine, etc.) the only fat person i remember getting notable screentime was one of the barbies (potentially only one?). one without some knowledge of the legacy of barbie could be forgiven for thinking that barbie was a toy born of insufficient and remedial feminist desires to let girls grow up thinking the world would be good to them.

this isn't to say that barbie failed to be either an incisive feminist text or even a notable critique of the toy's legacy, neither of which it was ever going to be. and claiming satire for it is, i think, doing some disrespect to how it reads straight. largely i have just been thinking about how time soothes the memory. probably all mattel wanted was some light revisionist history and to retread the steps of a decade-old feminist media moment to make it easier for the mothers of the world to buy their daughters barbies again, and no more needed to be said.
