“Love you too. Look after yourself.” Jangmi waved into the camera, as her parents faces were replaced with the ‘Call Ended’ screen.
She placed her phone on her bedside table, and sighed, before walking over to the wall next to her bed. They had only moved dorms a few day ago, yet Jangmi had managed to find time in redoing her entire collage of pictures.
The photos were evenly scattered, covering the entire wall. There were photos of her family, her friends, her members and random scenery shots she’d taken during all their trips.
She pulled the one of the pictures of her family off the wall, and sat back down on her bed.
It was taken during Seventeens first, and only, visit to Australia. Her parents had taken all the members out to lunch, and Mingyu had insisted on taking a picture of just her and her parents.
She was standing in the middle, right behind her parents seats. She was wearing a frilly strap dress, and her hair was nicely plaited into 2 pigtails, courtesy of her mum. Both her arms were wrapped around their shoulders, and she was grinning from ear to ear.
“What are you looking at?” Jangmi jumped at the sudden noise, and looked up to find her roommate leaning against the door.
She turned the picture around to face him. Dino squinted, before walking into their room, and grabbing the picture out of her hands.
“We need to go back soon. I heard your grandma tell Joshua that he was her favourite member.” Dino chuckled. “Since I’ve improved by English, I’ll definitely steal his place.”
Jangmi grabbed the picture back before sticking it back up on the wall. “Hate to break it to you, but her favourites Seokmin.”
He groaned before lying down on his bed. “How can I compete with that?”
“You can’t.” Jangmi said in a matter-of-fact tone, whilst reaching over to hold another picture; this time the photo iss with all her cousins back in 2015- the last birthday of hers she’d spent back home.
The conversation ended there, with Chan going back on his phone, probably texting his younger siblings.
Jangmi continued staring at the picture, holding the corners tightly in her hand.
“Jangmi-ah!” Why are you crying?”
She looked up in confusion, furrowing her eyebrows. She wasn’t crying.
Only when she touched her cheeks, did she feel the wet tears.
“I- I -don’t know” She stuttered, furiously wiping away her tears. “I’m fine. I’m okay.” Her voice betraying her by cracking at the end of her sentence.
She dropped the picture into her lap and started sobbing into her hands. She didn’t even know why she was crying. She was doing absolutely fine 10 seconds ago.
But the tears were coming out like a waterfall, and she could feel her breathing slowly becoming irregular, making her take deeper breaths to grasp onto some air.
“Hey hey hey.” The bed sunk next to her, as Dino pushed her into his chest. “It’s ok. Everything’s ok.” He’d heard his hyungs use that phrase often, when reassuring the other members- except he had never got a chance to use it. Until now.
His smooth demeaner didn’t help, as Jangmi’s breathing before more ragged and irregular, her body shaking through her muffled sobs.
“I need you to breathe for me” Dino pleaded, his voice raising after seeing the state of mind she was in.
He didn’t know what to do. Usually when she showed signs of panic, the hyung’s took care of her. He just left the room to bring her tea.
“Keep breathing. Take a deep breath.” He instructed, as he quickly ran to get his phone, which he had left on his bed.
He sat back down next to her, and called the group chat, hoping someone would answer.
Immediately when it started ringing, he switched over to the chat function. “Anyone at the dorms?” he texted. Not wanting to scare them. He could handle it.
He looked back up at his twin maknae, who was still struggling to breathe, and forcibly placed her hand on his chest. “Breathe with my heart. Slowly. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out…”
He kept repeating those words, when he got a notification that someone had replied to his text. He quickly unlocked his phone, and let out a small sigh in relief to see Joshua’s message.
“I’m here. What’s up?”
Dino called Joshua and was overjoyed to hear his voice after 2 rings.
“Can you come into my room? Jangmi just started sobbing for absolutely no reason” The words tumbling out of his mouth at an incomprehensible speed.
“On my way.”
Dino was grateful for Josh being the one who was coming over. Josh and Jangmi had a close bond- being the English foreigners of the group.
He turned back to face Jangmi; whose breathing had thankfully gotten a bit more stable.
“You’re doing good. You’re doing good.” He encouraged, rubbing her back.
He heard footsteps from the corridor and gave a weak smile once Shua barged into the room.
“Go make some tea or get her some ice-cream.”
Dino stood up and left the room, to obey his hyungs’ orders, whilst Joshua took her place on the bed.
He cupped Jangmi’s face, forcing her to look into his eyes.
“Are you ok?” Josh asked in English, frantically searching her eyes for some sort of answer.
Jangmi slowly nodded, taking in a deep breath.
“Good good. Breathe with me.” Josh grabbed her warm hands and placed them on his heart. “Follow the beat of my heart.”
Jangmi nodded, her breathing slowly easing during the next few minutes.
Once he was satisfied that her breathing was normal, he opened up the middle draw of her bedside table and pulled out her asthma puffer.
He handed it over to her, and whilst she used it, he pushed the stray hairs stuck to her face.
“What happened?” He whispered gently, when she placed her asthma puffer down on the bed.
Jangmi started playing with her hands on her lap. “I miss home.”
Josh leaned in closer. “What? I couldn’t hear you.”
“I miss home” A small sob left her lips, as she curled back in on herself.
He shifted down on the bed, until his back touched the wall. He grabbed Jangmi’s right hand and placed it on his lap, playing with her fingers.
“We all do.”
“No you don’t. No one does” Jangmi sighed, raising her voice a little. “They all can go home whenever they please, and their schedule lets them. Or their family can come up here to visit. They just need half a day free to visit. I need a freaking week. Do you know how rarely we get a week off?”
“Jun hyung and Minghao hyung are used to flying back and forth between China and here so often before COVID. Do you remember Minghao flying out every weekend? Between promotions. Plus they always talk to each other in Mandarin.”
“I speak to you in English, plus Vernon.” Josh's tone resembled one he would use on a 6-year-old who just fell off their bike, but he thought it was appropriate as their maknae looked so broken and fragile.
Jangmi gave a weak chuckle. “It’s different. It’s not just the English. It kinda comes hand in hand with the other stuff. But you still have family here. You can visit your aunts, your second cousins. Plus we always go back to LA for promotions.”
Josh nodded his head, “true true.”
Jangmi continued. “Everytime we talk about tour; I keep asking them to visit Australia. Even if it’s not our own concert, I’d be happy with KCON.”
“I’m just so sick of not being able to go back when everyone else can.” Her voice cracking. “I haven’t gone home in 4 years.”
Her hyung held her tightly, as she broke into sobs once again. Josh rocked Jangmi back and forth until she had no more tears left to cry. He’d learnt from his experiences it was often best to let her release her emotions, and then figure out ways to solve it.
Jangmi looked up once hearing front door being slammed, and quickly shifted her position, using her hands to dry her tears.
“It’s pointless hiding it, isn’t it?” Her voice sounding hoarse and cracking at the ends.
Josh chuckled, using his fingers to tuck her hair neatly behind her ears. “Doesn’t matter. I’m pretty sure Chan’s giving an over the top version of what happened.”
Jangmi groaned. “Can you tell Seungcheol hyung I’m fine.”
“I can’t lie to your dad like that.” Josh gasped dramatically, causing Jangmi to smack the back of his head. “No more bracelets for you.”
“Who said I want your childish bracelets anyway?” Jangmi joked, causing him to tackle her on the bed.
“Take that back.” Josh instructed, whilst tickling Jangmi.
“Never” Jangmi yelled, trying to squirm after his grasp.
Their fight continued for a little bit, only stopping when Jangmi announced that if she was tickled again, she’d wet the bed.
They sat in silence for a second, Jangmi using that time effectively to catch her breath.
“Thank you though.” Jangmi smiled at her hyung.
Josh squeezed his way between the way and Jangmi, before pulling her closer to his chest.
“You still haven’t told me what caused it.”
Jangmi stayed silent for a second, before little out a small sigh. “I got a reminder this morning, on my Calendar saying my flight was tomorrow. And that’s when I realised that I would have been seeing my grandma and family in a few days. And then when they called me, I felt so bad because they kept talking about all the fun we would be having if I was there. But I’m here, cos of fucking Covid, and not there. I’m on my last packet of tam-tams, and I’m pretty sure my vegemite is expired.” Her string of words ending with a small sniffle.
Josh opened his mouth, but closed it again. He didn’t know how to make Jangmi feel better. It’s true that the foreigners all missed home, but there were instances where Jangmi felt alone. He always complained about missing home, but he usually went there a few times a year. Jangmi, on the other hand, hadn’t been attacked by venomous animals for quite a while.
“I promise when this whole pandemic is over, we’ll go visit.” Josh held out his pinky.
Jangmi raised her eyebrows. “That’s a pretty big promise you got there.”
“I never said when.” Josh wiggled his pinky.
“Fineeee.” Jangmi looped her pinky with his, and they shook on it
Three knocks on the door, made them turn around to see Chan walking in with cup of presumably tea.
“Chan! Don’t spill any, I don’t want my socks to get sticky everytime I walk into your room.” Seungcheol huffed from behind him.
“Doesn’t that happen anyway.” Mingyu said in passing as he walked down the corridor.
Jangmi gladly accepted the warm milk tea, and took a sip. It was her favourite Dilmah tea, but because of her stupid diet, Chan had only put in one sugar.
“I wanted to put sugar, but I didn’t know if you wanted some.” Chan stood opposite her, watching her carefully.
Josh stood up, grabbing the tea from Jangmi and placing it on her bedside table, pushing some random rings which eventually fell on the floor.
“Actually.” Josh announced. “I think Jangmi and I are going to go on a Maccas Run.”
“We are?” Jangmi questioned, wondering when she even signed up for this.
“Yes we are.” Josh confirmed. “And we are going to get some shrimp on the barbie from a kbbq place. And then we’re gonna drink some ‘Fosters’ until 3am.”
Seungcheols eyes widened. “You are?”
“She barely drinks.” Chan objected quickly. Not wanting his drinking habits to pass down to his twin-maknae.
“Please never use Australian slang ever again. I will stop complaining about ‘Sunday Morning’ if you stop.” Jangmi begged, internally dying at him butchering Australian English. She’d text Felix about this nightmare later.
“Ok ok. But are you still down for a Maccas run?” He switched back to English
“I’m on a diet.” Jangmi sulked.
“We just finished promotions a few days ago.” Josh tried to reason with her.
“We’re shooting the music video to ‘24H’ soon though.” She pointed out.
“I don’t know what you both are saying in English, but I’m not going to object getting some fast food. I’m not going to endorse it either. As the lead-”
“Cut the crap Seungcheol.” Josh interrupted. “No one’s here to tell you off.”
Seungcheol waved his arms frantically. “Just do whatever you want. Be safe obviously. No one listens to me anyway.”
“You got that right.” Jangmi jumped out of her bed, before grabbing one of the jackets hanging in her closet.
“Isn’t that my-”
Jangmi grabbed her phone, before stuffing into her trackie pocket. “Can’t talk Chan. Gonna get food.”
Jangmi walked out the door first and as Josh was about to follow, Seungcheol grabbed his arm. “Tell me after, yeah?”
Josh nodded in confirmation. “I think you’ll need to speak to management about this.”
Their leader furrowed his eyebrows in concern. “Is it serious? Is she ok? Chan said she had a meltdown after looking at a picture.”
Josh gave a supportive smile. “She’s alright… I think… for now. She’s just homesick.”
Seungcheol mentally relaxed. “We’ll talk about it later. Thanks for looking after her.”
Josh opened his mouth to reply but was interrupted by Jangmi’s scream coming from the front door. “Hurry up! I want an Apple Pie.”
He chuckled, whilst shaking his head. “Talk soon,” he said as he left the room.
“Bring me back some fries!” Seungcheol shouted.
“And some nuggets!” Chan added.
Jangmi rolled her eyes, as Joshua grabbed his shoes.
They had just left their apartment and were waiting for the lift when their phones started vibrating like crazy.
Jangmi quickly opened hers up to find the groupchat being lit up with different McDonalds orders. Even from Wonwoo, who had gone back to his parents’ place for the night.
She shut off her phone without replying, and shoved it into her pocket.
“How mad would they be if I just seened them, without bringing back food?”

The fall from Heaven seemed a never ending one. As God pushed him off the sky with all of his strength, Joshua couldn’t help but smirk directly at him, penetrating his eyes with his blue icy gaze as he fell like a comet. That was his last revenge to that who called himself God, worshipped around the world and over, but so weak that he couldn’t stand someone threatening his power and beauty. Just as his foot slipped off the edge of that golden cloud and his wings started to painfully lose their feathers and crushing until they became dust, he grabbed Virgo’s wrist from God’s side.
Virgo, the favourite at God’s court, was the most beautiful and lovely of all angels. She had all the colours, shapes and perfumes of Earth, and God, who secretly envied that far away planet which he could only admire, kind of thought of her as if she was part of it. Silky dark hair waved down her sinuous body covering her marble sweet smelling skin, only wrapped in the lightest golden threaded cloth that God himself could have made especially for her. Her eyes, green as those leaves up high on the trees that draw incomprehensible shapes on the sky that’s the only thing above them, were even bigger than usual, puzzled and scared as she lost her wings during the fall.
When they finally touched Earth, both were surprised to see that their fall wasn’t anywhere close to the end. As he felt the raw rocks and roots scratching and whipping his spine, Joshua pulled Virgo closer to his chest, holding her tightly to protect her. As he pushed her against himself, he realised how their skins and features were becoming different as they distanced themselves from Heaven. He was getting darker, his skin wrinkly and dirty with that ink that they observed humans injecting in their own skin for fun or for what they called beauty. His hair got shorter and of a fire burning red, and he looked way older than he did in Heaven. The girl – since she was not an angel anymore – on the other hand, looked exactly the same. And he could realise from their bodies touching, that she was still light and perfect, her lips still softly pink curved in a timid smile as she raised her head to talk to him, taking pity in the pain he was inflicting himself to protect her during the fall.
«… Thank you.»
The thud when they soon enough reached the destination echoed in that desolated red clearing with the sound of Josh’s spine cracking against the dusty pavement. That land around them looked infinite, just a red, melting-hot, dusty desert that surrounded them with hopelessness. The air was humid and burnt Joshua’s lungs, as he was frenetically trying to catch his breath, but it didn’t have the same effect on the girl. She was perfectly fine, at least physically. She was desperately trying to reach the scars behind her back where her beautiful ivory wings once were, but found nothing but clear skin. That was even worse than she would thought it was. She had lost every sign of her heavenly nature, including the proof that she once was part of God’s angels court. Her eyes were filled with tears that immediately vaporised as they touched the malign ground.
She soon stopped her desperate sighing when her noise had been covered by Joshua’s interrupted, hysterical, painful breathing. He started spitting blood from his mouth as he only tried to breathe and he kept scratching his eyes as he felt them as if they were melting at the contact with the hot steam that made the air of that dreadful place. Virgo suddenly forgot her pain, her heart almost exploding in fear in front of that show. With her cheeks still wet from her tears, she passed her fingers over her face to gather them, and immediately put her fingers on the fallen angel’s eyes.
«Please, stay still for a second and keep your eyes closed.»
She could see him grinding his teeth and closing his fists so hard to stay put that he almost slayed his palms with his nails. She hurried to untie her golden tunic to cover his shoulders and wounded back and tying it like a cloak around his neck. As soon as he felt that burning feeling leaving his shaking body, he opened his eyes, which had turned into a liquid, transparent golden shade from the shock, and immediately grabbed Virgo’s hips pushing her against himself and starting to almost devouring her lips. The fire in his lungs extinguished, his lips rehydrated against those fresh and sweet pale rosebuds that he was craving more each second that he tasted them. The girl, shook and shivery, helpless in his arms, totally succumbed to that rush, feeling Joshua’s lips burning her as she couldn’t help but enjoy that kiss.
They only looked at each other when his pain had been completely relieved and he was satisfied, his mouth full of her taste.
«Thank you, little angel.»
He grinned at her, sliding the back of his now rough hands to follow the curves of her body through her back. She shook in his arms, surprised by that never felt warmth that his touch gave her. Being that far from Heaven, seeing just darkness, doom and dust around them, and Joshua’s now weirdly magnetic golden eyes, made it impossible for her to resist to his voice pouring honey-liquid words into her ears.
«Just give up to me now, trust me, you’re so much more from what He convinced you. You’re raw and rough and wild, just as much as you are perfect and sweet… And you know it. Because you liked it. I saw it, sweet thing. He wanted to keep you restrained, as He did with me, but He can’t here.»
As he whispered in her ear, he brought his fingers to firmly grab her tights, keeping her against his body, while she looked at the dim light filtering from the far away hole they made on the Earth’s surface with her head backwards, knowing that was the only way she would ever see Heaven again once she would have gave in to Joshua’s words, rolling her eyes at the feeling of his steamy breath on her neck and unconsciously bringing her arms around his neck, gently moaning as her legs tighten up around his hips. She couldn’t explain her actions, it all came naturally, or more, it seemed like she had absolutely no control over her actions, helplessly attracted to that devilish man, once God’s favourite as well. - What if he was right? - She thought, those words spinning like a hurricane in her head – What if I would have been just the next? – What if we really are the same? –
Those thoughts were covered by the drunken steam she was feeling reaching her head as she felt Joshua’s hands slowly moving up to grab her round, ivory bottom cheeks, pushing her against his swollen, burning sex. Although up in Heaven, all angels lived together, she never thought of that part of the male body as something that could gave her that much irrational and uncontrollable appetite. Her hips followed the guide of his hands with no difficulty whatsoever, sensually swinging over his cock as if she knew exactly what to do. She felt her eyes steadily attached to the fallen angel’s, completely stolen by the hungry and predator look on his face. He was smirking with no shame at all, feeling all the length of his cock relieve from the burning air around them, as it got wet between the girl’s dripping, peachy creases. While Virgo couldn’t help but keep moving over him, Joshua brought a hand to her lips, sliding two fingers in her mouth and keeping her head still forcing her to look at him.
«Suck my fingers.»
He kept smiling at her while she couldn’t help but obey to his orders, her cheeks getting red as she felt his fingers burning hot on her tongue, a feeling that she found herself craving more and more, leaving them with a wet pop as he took them out, to reach her entrance and push them inside her with no regard. The angel girl stuck her nails in Joshua’s shoulders, scratching her old tunic and bending backwards as she felt his rough fingers burning her insides and making her shiver. She wouldn’t have expected that pleasing addictive feeling, as these practices simply were inexistent in Heaven. She rolled her eyes backwards as Joshua brought his thumb on her clitoris, following her hips movements and exhaling completely satisfied while his and forearm found refreshment with Virgo’s sweetest humours.
 «Spit on it, c’mon, angel.»
He whispered to her, without changing his authoritarian tone, and rubbing his wet hand on the tip of his dick, grabbing her face downwards and slapping one of her butt cheeks violently. Virgo looked scared at first, completely helpless in his firm grip. She obeyed – her face blushing and her eyes getting liquid with pleasure as she couldn’t hold back a light and surprised moan at his smack on her bottom. After leaving a trickle of saliva sliding down to the red, hairy base of his now fat and pulsing dick, she raised her big, liquid eyes, her lips still open, and she tried to move over him, pushing the tip of his cock against her warm, wet opening.
«You’re going to love it, trust me. Sit on me.»
She smiled, surprised by her own initiative – a weird golden light sparkling in her eyes, a feeling completely new, like if something unleashed inside her. She put her hands on his shoulders, under the golden cloth, and passed them through his chest as she let Joshua’s rock-hard cock completely inside her, exhaling a sweet moan with her head backwards, her hair waving almost touching her soft, pale bottom pressed against the fallen angel’s hips. Joshua looked surprised, seeing Virgo’s nature changing at each inch of her flesh being penetrated by him. He couldn’t help to give up to the lust at the feeling of her warm, tight body welcoming his cock and sweetly wrapping around it and moving sensually, firmly grabbing her cheeks to follow her movements over him, uncaring of the red marks that he was leaving on her marble delicate skin. He then took advantage of her moans and her bent spine to take one of her nipples between his teeth, hungrily sucking and biting it, charmed by the taste of her skin, which seemed glowing more and more as it turned red for the pleasure running through her body. To him, for being in that desperate land, being inside that beauty seemed the most heavenly feeling ever, whose only thought was to take her as deep and rough as he could, as if that was his only source of air.
She pushed him backwards, laying on the burning ground, his still hurting back only protected by the golden cloth still tied around his neck. Once seated on him, she could admire his new figure, completely changed after their fall. Nothing seemed more beautiful at her eyes than his new colours, his imperfect skin, his vibrant hungry honey eyes burning the edges of all of her round sinuous shapes as they locked on her, moving on top of Joshua’s now sweating body. She passed her days in Heaven since God created her admiring those far away little dots that are humans, envying their nature. The same nature that she now saw in Joshua, and that she felt stealing her body, at each drop of their fluids that mixed within her. The girl kept moving on him with her hands on his stomach, more and more hungry for the feeling of her new nature pervading her flesh, feeling Joshua’s cock pulsing harder against her warm creases as she can’t help but fasten her movements, craving for that new feeling of pleasure. Joshua followed her rhythm pushing inside her with his hips as her humours dripping down his skin relieved him from the pain of the burning air and Earth of that evil desert and the pleasure couldn’t stop raising inside him, making him rolling his eyes backwards, moaning her name helplessly. Their pleasure exploded almost at the same time, their liquids mixing on their sexes in their first orgasm, making Virgo collapse on her lover, shivering as her skin lost its shine, its heavenly nature, corrupted by Joshua’s new nature, but still as clear and soft as it had always been. With her insides still contracting, she felt Joshua’s cock slowly sliding out of her, making his warm cum drizzle down her thighs. He rounded her waist with his arm, wrapping her within the golden, now scratched tunic, and caressing her back as he felt her nature changed as well. None of them had any trace left of their heavenly nature anymore, but they were not hurt by that place anymore either.
Virgo stood up after a while, raising her head one more time to the light way up above them, smiling and helping Joshua’s standing up as well, still a bit sore from their fall, but regenerated from their union. The girl untied her old cloth from the man’s neck, leaving them both naked in that desolation, looking around and seeing the place slowly changing around them, a new strange sort of dark garden blooming around them, a new kingdom, as Virgo saw it, was the result of that union.
«Look, Joshua. You were right. We must be unrestrained here, my lover. We can have a new reign of our own making, and this is how it will be.»
Innocence, once lost, can never be regained.
Darkness, once gazed upon, can never be lost.

Joshua was bored. Not only bored, but freezing and bored. A soft huff left the Composer as he sat atop the 104 building and watched the people below. Each was dressed for the weather in their own way, be that the crazy people wearing shorts, or the ones bundled up to the point they can hardly move. He had a feeling that he himself would rather be the latter.
The demigod took a moment to take in the lights, the flashing signs, and the white noise of everyone's voices meshing into an incomprehensible roar. He loved his city. If only the people in it weren't so rotten, maybe he wouldn't have tried to destroy it. Well that was all in the past now. Looking up at the starless night sky, he wondered faintly if his Producer was at that café of his. It didn't get a lot of business before, but perhaps now it had picked up?
Surely the UG wouldn't collapse in on itself if he were to leave for a little visit. It wasn't like he wouldn't be back soon enough.
The Composer lowered himself to the streets and stole into an alleyway so that he could adjust his vibe frequency without a fuss, then began his trek to Cat Street. Joshua kept his gaze forward, although some of the things people around him were thinking became rather distracting at times. By the time he reached the café, the blond boy was shivering despite the thick coat he was wearing.
Boy did he hate winter.

i raise u librarian!eunwoo
so our resident nerd works in a library
he’s the front librarian so he’s mostly in charge of administration and stuff at the front desk
meaning he has to deal with library patrons sometimes
and that he also has to deal with his team
i mean his team isn’t that bad, they’re mostly hella responsible
namjoon works in the classics department and other than the fact that he sometimes knocks over stacks of books he’s a great right hand man
wonwoo works with the ya books and he’s a wonder at organising and snarking at namjoon
joshua works in the foreign language and he’s pretty quiet but so is eunwoo so they get along pretty well
the children’s department, however, is a different story
remember how his team is ~mostly~ responsible
cue the children librarian
hello kim myungjun
the noisiest bean eunwoo has ever met
the worst thing is that myungjun’s intern eQUALLY NOISY AND IT DRIVES EUNWOO INSANE
and by driving eunwoo insane he means that naturally all three of them best friends and eunwoo is in despair because he only wanted peace and quiet in his life but the universe decided to throw him mj and sanha and their sunshine smiles and their strange ways of worming themselves into everyone’s hearts and now he has to live with eternal screeching
reference librarian leo constantly wants to murder them because they make sO MUCH NOISE but mj and sanha lock themselves in the children’s department and refuse to let anyone taller than sanha in because “if ur too tall u might scare the children!!!!” because they’re Actual Children, eunwoo swears
he doesn’t fail to noticethe only person taller than sanha in this damn library is leo
when eunwoo whines about the feud going on namjoon just pats him on the shoulder and lopes off to join the self-help literature department librarian jin
@ namjoon “thanks a lot hyung”
and so this is how eunwoo spends his days, juggling front desk duties and running interference between reference and children’s and shushing noisy library patrons
it’s a pretty normal job with a great team and at least it’s never boring
thanks a lot mj
like that time mj had to choose a book to read to the kids at Reading Time but couldn’t choose between two favourites and nearly broke down in tears
but wonwoo just smacked him upside the head and handed him a third book
crisis averted phew
until of course one day
a short blonde man runs into the library and nearly doubles over panting and wheezing
cue an alarmed eunwoo
but it turns out there’s nothing wrONG he just needs like books like STAT
eunwoo can do that
and as jinjin rattles off a couple book names eunwoo searches them up and pages for mj
why a grown-ass man is searching for so many children’s books with sUCH URGENCY eunwoo will probably never find out
but out comes mj and in they go to the children’s section
and normally eunwoo turns back to his administrative duties
but there’s still a shadow beside his administration desk
that isn’t in a jinjin shape
eunwoo looks up and blinks
and blinks again because sorry what is this man doing here
he’s dressed in all black and in a leather jacket and has the fiercest, grumpiest look on his face
and is also holding a whole stack of children’s books
eunwoo blinks again
what the hell is up with grown-ass men trying to find children’s books are they alright
this one is significantly less out of breath than the first man though so eunwoo just shrugs
i mean, he’s pretty cute
he accepts the books and library ID from the grumpy man and begins slowly checking them out, scanning each bar code and meticulously stamping the due date on the card at the back of the book
as he’s printing the receipt he peers at the man’s ID
‘moon bin’ it reads
“so,,,, moon bin,,,,,” eunwoo starts carefully,
“a big fan of children’s literature?”
and bin is startled and flushes red because??? there’s a reason why?????? he didn’t open his mouth???????? in the first place???????
and that reason is a dare by a lil shit currently sniggering outside the library
jokes on you rocky because reason number 2 why bin doesn’t want to open his mouth is because he’s met literally The Most Beautiful man he has ever seen in his entire life
it’s not as if he’s never been in the library before because like he hAs
he lied he’s never been in this library before
just that he’s never seen this librarian before
in the softest blue sweater bin has ever seen with small sweater paws
and with the most adorable pair of thin metal-frame round glasses
with the sweetest eye smile and the sweetest voice
bin thinks he might throw up
this man is beautiful and he’s staring too much
“,,,,moon bin?”
“aH YES IT ME YES THAT’S ME YES”
obvs he’s forgotten the question so eunwoo has to repeat it and bin is to embarrassed to reply right away
so he just stammers out a “yEah,,, my uh,,, friend,,,,,,,, yes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, children’s literature yes”
and so eunwoo just shrugs because
the grumpy man is suddenly no longer like a grumpy cat when he’s embarrassed and?? his voice is kinda cute actually if eunwoo does say so himself
forget that he didn’t actually answer eunwoo’s question
eunwoo doesn’t actually want to give this cute grumpy man back his books because it means he has to leave
but alas that blonde man is back with the noisy nuisance aka eunwoo’s best friend
and sunshine boy mj is hitting it off with the blonde man and they’re whispering excitedly while giraffe sanha trails behind them like a lost puppy
eunwoo makes a mental note to remind mj sanha’s not his personal puppy and is in the library interning to acTUALLY LEARN SOMETHING
and so he has to reluctantly hand bin’s books over
as he scans jinjin’s books he overhears whispers between jinjin and mj
mj: “ah so this is a dare? to see how many books you can borrow that start with your name??”
jinjin: “nah it just has to contain a word from my name?? and like we gotta see who has more books so i’m kinda lucky i got three words to work with, 박, 진 AND 우”
eunwoo peers at the books in his stack
he’s right lmao all of jinjin’s books have all the words 박, 진 or 우
wait
he peers at the check out history on his computer
bin’s books all had 빈 or 문
oh
oH
mj: “well,, i hope u win, jinjin”
cue mj’s most blinding sunshine smile
rip jinjin eunwoo’s so sorry he has to experience that smile
mj only pulls it out when he’s trying to impress someone but it’s probably just blinding him
and jinjin looks appropriately dazed rip
he mutters a thank u and red-faced, takes the books from eunwoo and makes a bee-line for the door
and nearly crashes into the glass door because 1) he’s a klutz 2) i highly doubt he could see straight after that cute ass smile
and mj just sighs because “wow eunwoo wasn’t he adorable did you see his dimples i swear that was the cutest gu-”
“hyung lmao he lost”
“whAT”
“yeah his friend got like 2 more books”
“WHAT”
“yeah moon bin got like 10″
“W H A T”
helpful sanha: “we cleared the place of all the books with 박, 진 and 우 though”
“shit hyung please tell me you didn’t tear apart the children’s department”
“.,.,.,.,.”
“sanha,,,,,, please tell m-”
sanha: “i gotTA GO SUDDENLY”
“kim mYUNGJ U N CLEAN UP THE DEPARTMENT OR I SWEAR TO GOD”
rip mj
he’s so lucky eunwoo loves him
namjoon just sniggers at him from the philosophy books because he’s a lil shit like that
eunwoo drops his head in his hands in despair
at least he got to meet a cute guy today though
and so life goes on
until the next day when a smol smol boy wearing a soft plaid shirt walks through the door
eunwoo flashes a smile
and then his eyes zero in on the books the boy is carrying
like half their children literature titles his library carries are in his arms
eunwoo narrows his eyes
so this is the guy that made the dare
rocky places his books on the counter and looks up at the librarian
woah
bin wasn’t lying when he came out of the library flushed red and stammering about an angel
yeah this librarian is honestly one of the most handsome men he has ever met wow
but said librarian is also giving him a death glare oops
rip rocky
how can a greek statue look so menacing rocky isn’t quite sure
he hurriedly produces a piece of paper from his pocket
“ah,,,, so u met jinjin hyung and bin hyung,,,,”
eunwoo shifts the books from the counter to beside his computer
and doesn’t say a word
“ahhh,,,,,, bin hyung also asked me to hand you this”
actually bin didn’t but rocky figures he doesn’t want to get on the librarian’s bad side i mean we all know what happens when u get on the bad side of an angel
u die
rocky doesn’t want to die so young
he scribbles down bin’s number on the piece of paper and hands it to a confused eunwoo before dashing out of the library
eunwoo slides his glasses further up his nose and peers at it
around the stack of books behind him namjoon and wonwoo also peer excitedly
and eunwoo does that cute mouth-stretchy thing
you know the one i’m talking about the happy yawn laughing thing
because he’s!! so!!!! excited!!!!!!!!!
a cute guy gave him his number!!!!
i mean by proxy but still
outside rocky is endlessly relieved bc it looks like he can live another day
until he remembers he gotta explain to bin why a random number will be texting him
oops
but when he tells bin this at dinner bin doesn’t react
which is kind of alarming
all bin does is freeze up and stop chewing and fall out of his chair
which i guess is kind of alarming
cue incomprehensible wailing through a mouthful of food
which i guess is more alarming
rocky never expected that high a note come out of his hyung’s mouth especially not with that amount of food stuffed in his cheeks
he lowkey wants to poke it to see how much is in there but jinjin gets there first
“bin ur mouth might explode”
“mouths don’t explode that easily” (through that mouthful of rice)
but then he starts wailing again because soft sweater paws round glasses eye smile angel has his number and might text him any time and his brain cANNOT HANDLE THAT
but by the time jinjin and him get bin off the floor and back onto his chair bin’s phone pings
because mj and sanha have gotten hold of the piece of paper rocky left eunwoo and have spent half the day endlessly into crafting The Perfect Message
they even got jin and namjoon to vet it for them that’s how serious they are about setting eunwoo up
and just to shut the terror twins up eunwoo agrees to send it because hell he doesn’t know if bin might reply anyway and asdjfhlkj he still lowkey can’t believe bin gave him his number
although he’s right in not believing it anyway bc it was rocky who did it but
he sends it
cue more incomprehensible wailing from bin and him falling off his chair again with a mouth full of rice
because when rocky picks up bin’s phone and reads the text all it says is
“coffee tomorrow at 4? - librarian, cha eunwoo”
okay rocky admits he squealed a bit too
it’s okay rocky so did i
death by binu isn’t that bad a way to go i gUESS

FOXING - HEARTBEATS [6.29] We go big...
Ian Mathers: I'm not sure why the rest of Nearer My God didn't really land for me, but honestly it's at least partly because I heard "Heartbeats" first. I responded so instantly and so strongly that I just can't get away from wanting the rest of Foxing's songs to sound like they're simultaneously deep under water and lost in space, I want them all to have strings and chanting and screaming, and whenever I try and get into them for what they are I just wind up playing this instead. [9]
Taylor Alatorre: Almost everything here is just teetering on the edge of greatness. The chorus drives home a simple, easily adaptable sentiment with intuitive gusto, but it doesn't point to any larger truth beyond itself, despite clearly wanting to. The orchestral bookends encourage a contemplative mindset and set the stage for the controlled demolition to follow, but there's no emotional string tying them to the oblique lyrics about the stubbornness of self-negation. The pulse-and-handclap percussion of the verses fits the title, but doesn't accentuate the vocals as well as it could. The one moment that qualifies as unmitigated greatness is the unexpected, haphazardly perfect buildup to the song's most crucial and best delivered line: "Pull that rat heart out of your chest/It doesn't mean anything to us now." [7]
Vikram Joseph: One of the most striking things about Foxing's Nearer My God is the way that moments of heart-stopping beauty or breathtaking intensity emerge from passages which at first seem murky, but with retrospect can only be seen as masterful builds of tension. On lead single "Slapstick," it's the moment when the guitars cut through like a searchlight, Conor Murphy yelps "I walk around with a head-glow!", and it genuinely feels like the ground has been ripped from under my feet and I'm plummeting through empty air. On "Heartbeats," it's that breathless, anti-gravity dream of a chorus apparating from the harrowed fog of the verses: a sweet existential escape, the moment when your flight ascends above the cloud layer after taking off on a soggy winter day. Admittedly, that chorus is "You are not in love, so stop playing along," but the word "love" is drawn out so far that it fills 90 per cent of the space; listening to Foxing, I'm suspended between a serrated nihilism and dizzy elation, and it feels vital. [8]
Edward Okulicz: How well this song works for you might depend on how you take to Conor Murphy's voice. My first impression was that I didn't like it, but that swirling hook of "you are not in loooooove" as the orchestration swells is one hell of a moment of release. There's really nowhere any song would be able to go from there, and so the song dropping to the barest bones after the second verse is a bunch of wasted seconds, but as far as half-finished dead-ends of pure emotion go, I'm impressed. [8]
Katherine St Asaph: A sumptuous, dramatic arrangement in search of a tolerable vocalist. [4]
Tim de Reuse: Halfway through my first listen, I had to check I didn't have another tab playing wind sounds or something in the background -- I then confirmed that the omnipresent whooshing noise is, in fact, a deliberate attempt at creating ambiance on the part of whoever produced this. The arrangement is so lavish that it's claustrophobic, feeding string flourishes through numbing reverb and pumping an airy drone in to smother every quiet moment. I'm so confounded by this mix that I don't have the energy to poke fun at the incomprehensibly theatrical vocals through extended metaphor. [2]
Thomas Inskeep: There's symphonic strings, there's a disco beat, there's annoyingly strained vocals, there's an actual build, there's live drums -- there's a lot of interesting parts that kind of add up to a good song. This might sound better in the context of an album? I wish there were a little more structure here, but it gets over. [6]
Alfred Soto: Foxing's album works best as an excerpted experience, where the scale of their overwroughtness turns the nearest competition into rubble. On "Heartbeats," Conor Murphy looks to Taana Gardner, Stacey Q, and the Knife in an effort to create a disco-tastic chorus, and it almost works. [7]
Iain Mew: This first time listening to Foxing properly my mind immediately went to Everything Everything. That band hasn't gone as lush with the strings or as grizzly with the vocals as "Heartbeats" does, but they've definitely used its twiddly guitar tone and the approach of stacking layers and layers and layers on to a musical Jenga tower of ungainly indie-funk is a familiar one. It's one I frequently love and Foxing achieve the same intense feeling of being buffeted by emotion and the inexplicable. [8]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: Musically speaking, I would've been content with Foxing making variations of "The Medic" for the rest of their career, but I appreciate how much growth they've shown since their debut. "Heartbeats" shows just that, and it's most striking for the dissonance present between Conor Murphy's whiny vocalizing and the orchestral instrumentation, the latter of which would sound less polished if employed by other emo bands of their ilk. They throw in a grooving drum beat that further disrupts the landscape, and the incongruence between these three elements creates an uneasy tension that aligns well with the lyrics. The song isn't egregious by any means, but it certainly feels less than the sum of its parts, like the band is trying to get by on the mere existence of these ideas. It's also hard to watch the music video and not view it as the overwrought emo dude's version of "Geyser." "Heartbeats" isn't dilettantish, but it comes close. [4]
Maxwell Cavaseno: No matter how densely you orchestrate your bridge, your mid-'00s indie jam of the week is nothing more and nothing less, bucko. [3]
Ryo Miyauchi: "Heartbeats" sounds like the resulting music heard while standing in the middle of echoes of different songs playing at a distance. The faint strings, synthesized drums, light scribbles of guitars: they all brush up against each other but barely materialize into anything solid. The vague sense of contact makes that chorus more punchy, for it's the most tangible and straightforward thing provided, including the contained lyrics. It strikes like a warning bell more than a light bulb going off, and its concision makes me want to hold it tight, especially because it's as slippery as any of the elusive sounds here, thanks to Conor Murphy's flailing vocals. Maybe a different emo punk band would let that chorus become the release it craves to become, but not Foxing. [6]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Everything's unsteady here, from the Rachmaninoff sample that floats around the corroded rooms that Foxing builds to the threat-posed-as-anthem of the chorus. But it's a compelling unsteady, a shambling creature that draws you inexorably into its grasps. It's not the hookiest song on the record ("Gameshark" is the clear choice there), but it holds onto you with an undying energy that stays even after the song ends. [7]
Joshua Copperman: "Heartbeats," shouldn't work, and doesn't work, but that's why it works. That may sound like a backhanded, condescending compliment, but the band is fully aware that they're biting off more than they can chew (an expression Conor Murphy used first.) The members of Foxing must know that theoretically, none of this works together in the slightest; not the Rachmaninoff sample, not the muddy drum machine, not the time signature that no one can even count, the awkward transition to the chorus, not the bone-chilling histrionics of the bridge. Yet somehow, the lyrics hold this together and justify the enormous musical scope. The first verse feels like watching raw footage of someone contemplating death for the one moment of freedom between the bridge and the ground. It took me a while to understand the rest of the song because of how much that opening section haunted me, even as the first few lines use typography as depression metaphor ("The font was serif'd and tasteless/It was slanted and Latin to death") "Heartbeats" seems to depict an aftershock of a toxic relationship, and cutting someone off even when they're "begging forgiveness" from the gallows. Don't fall for it, screams Murphy: "Pull that rat heart out of your chest/it doesn't mean anything to us now." It's jarringly unsentimental, but there's plenty of senitment to counter those lines: it wouldn't be emo without a lyric like "your heart beats with us now" and a chorus like "you are not in loOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOve" to counter the intimacy. Inexplicably, the production winds up accentuating the urgency rather than taking away from the story, even during that bridge. Nearer My God is at its best when the band uses the studio to recreate their live energy instead of trying to replicate a live sound, and that's why "Heartbeats" succeeds. All the high-concept elements come together to first evoke a terror way beyond falling, then the way out. [9]
