Okay, was thinking about it and I remembered a lot of you were very young or not even alive for this, so:
When 9/11 happened I was 12 and had just started 7th grade. I grew up in a suburb of New York City. 12 people from my town died, including a firefighter whose son was in my younger brother's CCD group.
Things changed SO fast. Practically overnight. Suddenly, we were all hypervigilant, and after the immediate response of assistance from around the world, the prejudice was oozing from nearly everywhere. In northern New Jersey, we had and still have a large west (Middle East) and south Asian population. They were hit the hardest.
People freaked out just because a mosque was going to be built in lower Manhattan within several blocks of Ground Zero at one point. It was ridiculous and the Islamophobia was so fucking awful and infuriating. It still is. It didn't go away. For the most part, New Yorkers are usually good to each other because there's literally someone from everywhere here, but this was legitimately terrifying. People would even attack Sikhs - who weren't Muslim, Sikhism is its own thing - because they saw the turbans and made a decision based on racism (i.e. bin Laden had a turban so these people must be like him).
The "patriotism" was miserable. "Freedom fries" happened because people were mad that France didn't want to go into Iraq with Bush in 2003. We all thought it was stupid then too.
The Chicks (formerly known as the Dixie Chicks) got blackballed because they came out against said war. They were one of the biggest country acts in the world at the time. In general, country music went through a massive tonal shift post-9/11 and became far more "patriotic" and conservative. Johnny Cash wouldn't have recognized it.
The Flash movies that inevitably popped up satirizing politics were...something. You can find most of them archived on YouTube these days. But that was how the internet tended to cope back then.
The shift from happiness to paranoia was so fucking fast. I went from a world where my biggest concern was pre-ordering the GameCube to being worried about politics and death all the time. All the news showed was footage of people dying for weeks. Politicians started using the footage in commercials. You just had to keep reliving the trauma of it over and over again. I stopped watching the news.
It was, looking back on it, a huge galvanizing point for the American right. Politicians started using 9/11 to justify so many things. This was where I began to see as a young teenager that you could use people's prejudices to get a grip on power and get what you wanted. I didn't like it.
People started drawing memorial art almost immediately. The phenomenon of memorial art being done decades later with cartoon characters still persists on deviantART to this day, but when it started, it was mostly people doing vent art because it's really upsetting to be a kid and see death on that scale on the news.
It took me 15 years to go back to the site after 9/11. I'd been as a kid in 1997 and I went up in the South Tower with my family. I didn't set foot there again until 2016, 15 years after the attacks. I found the name of the firefighter whose son was in my brother's CCD class. It was surreal.
This chapter of American history arguably closed for many people in 2011, when bin Laden was killed in a raid. I remember watching the Mets play the Phillies that night. Daniel Murphy, who I'd named a cat after two years earlier, was at bat, and suddenly the crowd started chanting "USA." I used my Blackberry to check the news and that was how I found out. I was a senior in college, about to graduate. I don't even remember how I felt, just that the way I found out was so fucking weird.
It was a really stressful, bizarre climate to grow up in. In the time between my 12th and my 22nd birthday, I saw my entire world get turned upside down overnight, massive waves of prejudice, unnecessary wars that killed even more innocent people, literal war crimes (tw: rape, murder, prisoner torture, every other bad thing you can think of under the sun), and the rise of false patriotism and nationalism, which you can still see the right wing harnessing today.
If you're going to mock something here, mock the false patriotism. Mock "Freedom Fries." Mock George W. Bush. Just...don't mock the actual moments where people died. Too many innocent people died from the attacks themselves, the Islamophobia afterwards, and the wars that followed. That shit isn't funny.

Is there ever a hypothetical world where Jackie and Shauna’s situation is reversed (as in Shauna dies and Jackie makes it home)? And if so, how do you think Jackie would react and deal with it?
this is ANOTHER of my favorite cans of worms to open lately so THANK YOU for giving me an opportunity to talk about it!!
i was thinking about this mostly because i was thinking about how shauna's hallucinations of jackie provide us with such valuable information about shauna's thoughts/feelings/desires, how she thinks of jackie, how she thinks of herself (via jackie). hallucighost jackie i think sort of has two sides that are intertwined but serve different purposes - there's one side that's more straightforward and even sweet: it shows how shauna, in her grief and pain, wants to remember jackie (the fun, lighthearted moments; braiding her hair, joking about randy). the other side is more dark but gives us just as much if not more insight into shauna: she uses jackie as a mouthpiece for her own bad thoughts about herself. hallucighost jackie is the whip that shauna self-flagellates with. and she punishes herself, but she's also sort of repressing the fact that she even feels guilty (which maybe is why she needs jackie's "ghost" to guilt her, because she can't admit to herself that she feels guilty). and it all must hurt even more coming out of jackie's mouth - which, if you think about it, is probably why she does it (better fuel for her guilt complex).
ANYWAY, i digress (sort of). my point is, i've always wondered what we could learn from jackie hallucinating shauna. how would jackie want to remember shauna, but at the same time, how might the memory of shauna torture jackie?
if we do a simple swap and have shauna leave the cabin when jackie tells her to during their fight and then shauna freezes, that's one option. we get jackie feeling both immensely hurt by shauna's nearly inconceivable betrayal but, at the same time, feeling guilty for sending her out there. this could lead to some interesting hallucinated convos and, personally, i 100% think it could also lead to jackie doing shauna's makeup in the meat shed lmao. (and thats how you know they're made for each other!)
BUT ALSO. shauna's betrayal (i mean, combined with jackie losing her social status in the wilderness and having the other girls turn on her ofc) made jackie so depressed that she was unable to eat, and shauna dying on top of that would have the potential to completely destroy jackie's will to survive. it would be a big ask, at that point, to get jackie through to rescue. id say its pretty likely she dies of a broken heart, so to speak. like, just loses all her remaining will to live (because her will to live was literally hanging on by a thread and that thread was shauna). the only way i can imagine her surviving long enough to go home is if she has a complete and total break from reality and like, just sort of dissociates from the entire year-plus that follows. i think (? let me know if you agree bc this actually just came to me while writing this and im not sure if it holds up) that if the writers really sold it right, they could convince me that jackie basically goes catatonic and retreats into some fantasy world (one where shauna is around, of course!) for the rest of their time in the wilderness. not exactly the way shauna talked to jackie in the meat shed, because shauna knew she was hallucinating and was more or less able to walk away when she had other obligations. i think jackie would actually legitimately just lose her grip on reality, and succumbing to this would be the only way for her to survive. kind of like the bacchanal but about, like, everything.
the other scenario that occurred to me (and it's a pretty awful way for shauna to die and makes me really unhappy btw, so, sorry in advance) is what if shauna's abortion attempt had gone really, really wrong and she had gotten an infection and died from that? obviously jackie has no clue at this point about jeff/pregnancy/rutgers/etc so its pure unadulterated heartbreak. taissa could play a really interesting role in this situation as the only other person who knows this huge, earthshattering secret. would she keep it from jackie? i think that would be the prudent thing to do. losing shauna would already be almost too much for jackie to take, but she could maybe survive that by designating herself as the keeper of shauna's memory and she could probably convince herself she owes it to shauna to stay alive because if jackie dies then shauna is gone for good. but, as we've seen in canon, finding out that shauna betrayed her sends jackie into a really dark place where she doesnt have much will to live. i think she could plausibly survive with her sanity intact if one or the other happens (shauna betrays her OR shauna dies) but, as i discussed above, experiencing both would either break her sanity or effectively kill her.
and i suspect taissa is smart enough to realize this too, so if she wants to keep jackie alive she'll withhold this information (hide/burn the journals?) and let jackie cling to whatever romanticized image of shauna she comes up with. once they get back to the real world, who knows? taissa might tell her because she feels like jackie deserves the truth, jackie might read shauna's journals from before the crash in an attempt to feel close to her again and find out that way, or even jeff might tell her (worst case scenario IMO)... and im honestly not sure what jackie would do at that point, like, murder jeff maybe? (im joking but i actually am not sure how that whole situation would play out. maybe depression 2.0 but in the real world, but that's not as fun as murder.)
i haven't even said what i think jackie would hallucinate, so lets end with that. for shauna, it's primarily about self-flagellation and self-punishment, although it has some ability to soothe her as well, like when she imagines having fun with jackie.
for jackie i think its actually fairly simple: its obvious to all of us that what jackie wants most is shauna's authentic and full love, and my personal theory is that the main (and maybe even sole!) function of jackie's hallucinations would be escapism and wish-fulfillment, and imagining that shauna really did love her.
jackie doesn't have a self-destruction/guilt complex like shauna does. jackie, i think, would be able to just feel guilt in a more straightforward way. as well as anger! so in the scenario where shauna freezes after their fight, jackie would certainly be feeling a lot of guilt, but she doesn't need or want shauna to remind her, she could just apologize. and she's feeling a lot of anger, but she'd be able to say it to shauna's (hallucinated) face instead of putting it through some twisted alchemical process that turns it into something else. like, i think she actually does have a chance of getting closure in a way that shauna doesn't because shauna would never let herself get closure because then she'd have nothing left to fuel her guilt/self-destruction complex.
i think jackie would want closure for her immediate anger and guilt about shauna's death, and because she wants it, she'd be capable of getting it. but after that's dealt with (assuming she survives long enough to deal with it), or in a scenario where jackie doesn't know about shauna's betrayal/isn't responsible for her death, i really think (and i just made myself sooo miserable realizing this btw so you're welcome. or i'm sorry) that the thing that would cause jackie eternal and relentless pain for the rest of her life would be the immense regret and the feeling that she didn't love shauna enough, or didn't love her right. and her hallucinations of shauna would, by and large, simply be an outpouring of all the love she didn't get to show her in life (and imagining the reciprocation of that love that she always wished shauna would give her).

dropping some thoughts about vida here
i started watching this show for melissa barrera and i absolutely enjoyed it and have rewatched some episodes bc it's very entertaining
s3 felt kind of different, it was almost like the sisters switched roles at some points
i might be reading too much into it, but in the first few eps as emma and nico's relationship was going well i would look at emma's face and be like she's happy but she's still waiting for the other shoe to drop, and of course it did. and i was so sad to see her clam up again and fall back into her whole "vulnerability = weakness" thing. for a few episodes she just looked so dead inside like she was seriously depressed and triggered with everything going on, like nico's secret wife and her awful dad making himself known
i love lyn so much but i need her to be single. i'm so glad she finally realized where her true priorities lie and that she needs to work on turning into a chameleon with the men in her life but i just hate that it happened in the last like 20 minutes of the series finale
side note but i was not expecting lyn to get so into religion for a hot minute. i mean i understand that it was her yet again molding herself to the people in her life, so i think she snapped out of it once her father showed his true colors but still like it was so jarring. god the man gave me such awful vibes and the last scene of him and emma after she confronted him was legitimately hard to watch
the sisters spent so much time apart and on different pages this season it made me sad :( i completely understand why but i do miss the moments in the first episode or in earlier seasons when they were sisterly and messing with each other
i love that mari had some more time this season to build herself up a little more and yes this is cruel to say but her dad dying is a blessing ! now she can finally look after herself and find people who appreciate what she does. honestly that man pretty much killed himself after he kicked out the only child who actually took care of him. ladies ask not what u can do for machismo but what machismo can do for u
speaking of this family i can't STAND johnny oh my GOD get off my screen and get away from the women in ur life all u do is hurt them
god i wish this new generation of shows had longer seasons. a 6 episode season is nowhere near enough to develop the characters and storylines better (even tho this season the episodes weren't all 30 min like s1 and s2). i was like holy shit things are happening so fast it's one terrible thing after the other but of course they are, they only have like 5 hours to tell the story!!
i'm really fond of this show and how witty it is, its integration of mexican and american and mexican-american cultures, the spanglish, the butch rep!! everything
actually one of my favorite moments this season was when lyn was talking to that european dude at her bf's mom's bday party (fuck her bf and his mom by the way holy shit he was such a weirdo) and she was talking about how difficult it is to be perceived as mexican by gringos while still not being mexican enough for mexicans. when she said she couldn't even hold a conversation in english or spanish i was like u read my mind. i'm literally incoherent. anyway it really resonated with me as an immigrant and i think it's such an important conversation to have!!
anyway emma and lyn repaired their relationship and their bigoted father is rotting in hell and they keep the bar and eddy's back too and everything is going better than ever, they told me so themselves <3

This is me just screaming into the void for a bit, shaky mental health day so yeah. Might be triggering so be careful.
I am really terrified of dying. Like, my mental health has been in the shitter for a while but I'm never going to be at risk of suicide because dying is way too scary for me to ever try that.
But I think the worst thing about the idea of dying is that I doubt I'd ever be remembered for anything. Like I don't think I've done anything really worth preserving. I mean, I've known I wasn't main character material since I was a child, and I certainly never wanted to be one. But I don't really have anything to show for my 34 years on this planet. I'm not capable of doing anything big and I don't want to be famous really, but I would at least like to be able to leave something that says that I existed, I was here, I was more than a fart in the wind. I don't have any talents to speak of, I'm not good at applying myself to getting shit done. I used to think I was, but I'm not. I've tried to dedicate as much energy as I can spare to loving people, but I'm unable to be consistent or reliable with that and I feel like I'm selfish about things a lot. Maybe I'm fine, idk, it's hard to tell when the mind worms always say I'm the worst and people just barely tolerate me and don't like me at all. I used to be able to fight those thoughts by knowing that they were in my head or asking friends to confirm I'm not being a bother and they don't hate me, but it's been getting to a point recently where even if I directly confront those thoughts with the truth it doesn't stop me feeling awful and I'm not sure what more I can do about it. I am struggling so hard with important life stuff rn and with daily chores too and I'm just so goddamn tired. I just really wish there was someone who could come and just complete a few tasks for me because I no longer know how to get them done myself even though they should be easy. But they aren't things I can hand off to someone else so I'm just screwed I guess.
And seriously like, how do people do routines beyond the basics? I get dry skin that's itchy but I legitimately could not manage an actual skincare routine because I barely have energy any time for basic hygiene. And that's not a depression thing, that's a dyspraxic thing, it's just mentally taxing and physically exhausting to have a shower and remember to brush my teeth every day, and by the time I've got through that I don't have any time for applying lotion or make up or anything, you people are fucking wizards.
Did I have a point to this? I don't remember anymore. I guess I should go eat something. Don't pay too much attention to my rambling, I'll feel fine by tomorrow.

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8YEKP8t/
Someone also drew them as the revenge album cover….YEAH IM GOING INSANE omg AND I saw someone do embroidery of the angel scene which I had to tell you about since you really liked that one^.^
AWE thank you for catching me next time you’re so sweet <333333 imagining that makes me:] THERES CRIME IN ARTEMIS FOWL???? Okay this is fucking hilarious I can’t stop laughing this whole time legitimately this whole time….I had that book series confused with Guardians of Gahoole so I thought Artemis fowl was Owl warrior cats until just now LMFAOOOOOOO
Be careful what you wish for because I’m starting to finally embrace my out there thoughts and already it’s hard to restrain myself ITS REALLY WEIRD FOR ME bc I have so much internalized shame even just around existing. I feel more shame around the most simple shit than people do with their fucked up fantasies so it’s gonna be interesting where this goes>:))))) fun fact I sent you an anon about that before we even started going back and forth hehe throwbackkkkk<3333 you not being able to hold back any noises<33333333 oh fucking perfect I know I’ve mentioned making noises myself but I loooveeeeeeeeeee hearing them from others especially if it’s because of me and what I’m doing to you godddd I wonder what kinds of noises you’d made mhm you know I had the thought tonight of getting close to your neck and then sinking my teeth in when you don’t expect it hehehehe too bad I don’t have fangs that would make it even better don’t you agree? You calling me your good luck charm oh mygodjsjshd that made me happy stim hehehehehehehe oh yes I would let you:) there’s so much I would let you do. You know normally I don’t have much awareness of my bones day. While I read what you said I touched them to your words and felt them. Later I touched more of my bones and giggled like a dumbass idk why but touching my hand bones made me laugh there’s so many in there like way more than I’ve noticed. Though it would be a lot nicer if you were the one touching them instead. They don’t get enough love!!!! And you would appreciate them. I feel like my bones I have the most awareness of are my ribs which sometimes I do run my fingers along, my collar bones used to love those though I’ve been neglecting them in recent years which is :( and my hip bones those are fun to touch. OH AND MY JAWLINE I used to love it haha god I would love to run my finger along yours and kiss along it. Your fascination with bones is intriguing to me. Have you always been into them? How did your fascination with them begin? I hope mine are up to your standards>.>
It’s not stupid at all!!! Lots of people get nervous for their first day. You’re going to do great baby!!! You’re very smart and capable and you’re gonna look cute in whatever outfit you choose. Jealous of all the people who get to see it. Letting me help you pick out your outfit<33333 let’s see hmmmmmm black is your color so you definitely should wear black:] WEAR AN MCR SHIRTTTT and shorts^.^ omg with like boots…yk like combat boots or something like that. That would be sickkkkk
Okay so I ended up dying it in two separate sessions and it's kinda complicated to explain haha. So I used to have a black mohawk, then that grew out (I cut the mohawk shorter) and I bleached all my natural hair and dyed it neon green, then that neon green started to fade and my roots grew in, so yesterday I took a pair of clippers to the back of my head and cut it shorter there before throwing bright red over my entire head, then today, after that, I got my remaining black hair dye and just started pinching locks of the previously-black mohawk between dye and dyed the mohawk section back to black that way, and I took the hair lining my temples and forehead and ears and dyed the edges of those black, and grabbed random strands from the side and dyed those black too. So. All-in-all, my hair is black on top with bright red and black sides. Sorry that got convoluted hahaha. Haha I think it's cute that Hannibal made you think that <3 I think there's two sides of cannibalism that really appeal to me, both the primal animal need to eat flesh from another of your species, and the way Hannibal turns all the meats into culinary pieces of art, I love dedication like that heh. Aargh okay well now I can't wait to watch that video! I guess I'll just have to keep on bingeing <3 Maybe I should branch out and draw some Hannibal too sometime, should I post that here or on my other fandom account? Would people here be interested in Hannibal art by me?
I have absolutely no clue what Guardians of Gahoole is but I'm dying at you thinking Artemis Fowl is about owls hahaha you're so cute <3 I mean it's a fair mistake to make, fowl is a classification of birds hehe.
I also feel a lot of shame surrounding existing, but I get so happy that you're embracing yourself, you deserve all of your own love <3 You don't have to restrain yourself for me baby, but I get it, tell me whatever you feel comfortable telling me about <3 Hehe I was reading this part of your message and immediately thought of that anon, and it was you after all! Mmm I'm not particularly noisy in my room at night, but I'm sure I would be with you darling, you bring out all these parts of me <3 God I'd love for you to sink your teeth in my neck, it's one of my favourite feelings, bite as hard as you want/can baby, make me feel your teeth in my skin for long after. Hng if you had fangs... I love the idea of fangs so much, the sharp pain as they pierce skin, the little bead of blood that'd well up, I'd love for you to sink your hypothetical fangs in my neck ;) There's so many bones in the hand indeed, and so many tendons, and the carpal tunnel... I saw three cadaver arms and the one where the tendons were exposed... and the teacher pulled on them to make the fingers move... oh how I love how the human body works. I bet your bones are so pretty darling, I bet they'd feel so nice under my fingers, gently prodding you to feel any bone I can get my hands on, that you'd let me do that... <3 Collar bones are so pretty, such a perfect little dip to push a finger into to feel the muscle... I love ribs too, the little hills and valleys, tracing them up to the sternum... Hmm your jawline, I bet your jaw would fit so perfect in my hand <3 I don't exactly know how my fascination started, I've always loved the animal skeletons in high school biology classrooms, but I suppose it started as an eating disorder thing. You know all those emaciated girls and boys? How you can practically see right through them because their skin is pulled so taut? There's a morbid fascination in there, outside of the admiration I've always felt. Isn't it insane, to have someone so skinny you can practically see their bones slice through the thin veil of their skin? It's something that intrinsically scares you, someone so skinny you can just tell it's not good for them, but it's beautiful too. The human extremes. I also just love gore, though that's a recent development I suppose, morbid fascination too :] There's just something so magical about knowing what goes on inside a body, to have the privilege to see it with your own two eyes, it's as much arousing as it is beautiful to me. For all that I express that I hate humanity, the human species is a sight to behold <3
Thank you darling for your sweet words <3 I'm definitely going to wear an MCR shirt, just gotta choose which one hehe. It's gonna be pretty cold at 7am so I don't know yet if shorts will work, but I'll let you know what outfit I picked <3 Thank you for your help cutie I love all those ideas <3

SNK 139 Review Part I: On Eren Jeager and Genocide
Why?
Why is this happening?
Folks, I’m going to be honest here: there are no words for this. The main thrust of this chapter is completely inexplicable. It’s stupid. It’s ill conceived. FML.
Just…just the term itself is laughable.
Eren redemption arc.
Sksksksksksksksksksksk
After everything he’s done, everyone he’s killed, you’re going to try redeeming Eren in the final chapter?
Eren didn’t need to be redeemed. He was a bullheaded kid who didn’t let anyone stop him from doing what he thought needed to be done. He sees the titans outside the walls as enemies to be exterminated. When he learns that his real enemies are other humans, who have a right to freedom as much as he does, he can’t accept it and decides to just exterminate them too. That mindset led him down a tragic path of genocide.
That’s not a bad character arc!
In fact, I’d say it’s very compelling. Nonconformity and obstinance are often presented as virtues; flipping that paradigm on its head and showing the vices of those virtues was legitimately smart and provocative.
Making people rethink what traits are virtues and vices is a great moral to the story, and it paired well with the other moral of cooperation and loving your fellow people.
Then this chapter came out, and they threw all that away.
Eren’s arc once made me think of Aristotle, who argued that true virtue lied between extremes: neither too submissive nor too rebellious.
Now Eren’s arc makes me think of pseudointellectual 4chan philosophy, and dumb teenagers: “He’s not a bad guy, he’s just human!!!”
Eren’s motivations are a mess now. He had no free will, but he also had a plan, but deep down he wanted to do the rumbling no matter what, but actually he really wanted to be with Mikasa.
Oh, and B T dubs, he killed his mom too.
You can tell Isayama is desperate to make Eren as sympathetic as possible to justify making him the anti-hero because he’s throwing everything he can pull out of his ass at Eren.
Really, though, all he ended up doing was smearing shit on the character.
Eren’s plan was to kill a significant part of the human population so the world wouldn’t be as overwhelming a threat as before. Simultaneously, he planned (“planned”) for the alliance to become vaunted heroes to the world when they killed him, thus paving the way to peace.
This…makes no sense?
There is no reason Eren should have believed this would work. During the battle of Trost, Pixis asked him if humanity could unite if threatened by a common enemy. Eren said no.
Eren is a pessimist about people. He sees how much the walldians fought with each other and concluded that people would always be at odds.
And the Tybur family helped defeat the Eldian Empire, but only the Tyburs were seen as heroes by the Marleyans. That good will was not imputed from the Tyburs to the other Eldians on the continent. There’s no reason to think that would happen here when it didn’t back then.
I’m assuming, anyway, that the alliance becoming heroes is supposed to lead to a world where Paradis is safe since that’s supposed to be Eren’s goal.
I’m willing to grant that maybe this part of Eren’s plan was more of a hope on his part. Peace would come only after his death, so he can’t truly “plan” for anything afterwards.
I think it’s safe to say that killing the world’s population was the main part of his plan, since that’s the part he had the most control over.
To the extent he had any control over his actions, which brings me to the next point.
So, turns out Eren had no free will.
Can you not feel Isayama’s desperation?
After all the awful things Eren’s done, Isayama’s brilliant idea to make him sympathetic is to strip him of all agency.
This is done by two routes throughout the chapter.
The first is by building him up as a victim. Eren’s mind is fucked; he can’t really control himself. Any decent person would feel pity for him, which is reinforced by the sorrow Armin visibly feels for him.
Then, like a shotgun blast to the face, we are told that Eren killed his mother in a moment that is clearly supposed to endear us to him.
This is such a transparent appeal for our sympathy. Isayama’s desperation leaps off the page and mugs us of it.
The only thing that this revelation adds to the story is that it gives Armin a reason to take up Eren’s hand, and show him support. You can see Armin’s heart breaking for Eren in that moment.
That’s mostly why this is here: to give the mass murderer a hard luck story so our hearts melt for him.
The second route is that depriving Eren of agency absolves him of blame for what he did.
Eren beat Armin bloody, but you can’t really blame him for it. He was drugged out on the Founding Titan and didn’t want to do it. He was acting on impulse, just going with the flow, so he deserves, at the very least, some leniency.
Eren both having a plan and not having much in the way of free will is contradictory. Everyone still talks about Eren as if he’s someone who is doing stuff even though we’re told he’s not really capable of rational decision making.
I’m going to be nice and assume Isayama’s intent is that when you parse this all out, you end up in a place where Eren is not truly responsible for what he did, and in any event this all ended with the titan curse broken and the world at peace, sooooo break out the champagne everyone, we achieved world peace!
Yeah, bub, I’m not partying right now.
Isayama’s ploy to absolve Eren of blame didn’t work. Eren is still responsible for the people he killed and his Founding Titan lobotomy counts for shit. Turns out it helps to know how free will works when you’re writing about free will.
Free will is the quality of being in control of your actions, at least to the extent necessary to be held responsible for them.
Eren was just going with the flow (wonder what Annie thought of that…), acting on impulse, and getting dragged along by fate, but that’s not actually important.
It’s been known for centuries that current events are caused by previous events and that the current events will bring about future events in a never ending chain of cause and effect. One domino causes another to fall causes another to fall and on and on. This is called determinism.
And that’s ok because we free will exists. It exists even if we can’t do anything other than what we are going to do. It exists in spite of, or even arises out of, determinism.
This premise, that free will and determinism are not mutually exclusive, is the foundation for a family of theories about free will called compatibilism.
Compatibilist free will is the most popular theory of free will. There are a couple of variations on the basic idea, but the gist is that free will exists when your actions can be linked to an aspect of yourself that you identify with.
For example, if you had no choice but to do something, but you’re ok with that because it’s what you wanted anyway, then you have free will.
Even if I didn’t know you’d stop me in the end, I think I still would have flattened this world.
-Eren Jeager
That’s all I needed to hear.
EREN, FUCK YOU!!!!
Eren had free will, at least as much as necessary to blame him for his genocide.
Isayama threw this curveball at us and all it did was ruin Eren as a character while leaving him just as repugnant as before. Incredible. It’s the worst of both worlds.
Before this chapter Eren was a guy who believed in something and followed that belief no matter who got in his way. That was great! It was tragic and sad, but great storytelling.
Where does this chapter leave us?
What we learn in this chapter is that Eren didn’t really believe in anything. He may have free will enough to be a shithead for what he did, but that doesn’t mean he has free will enough to be an interesting character.
Eren coming to grips with him not being free, in an absolute sense, would have been so much more interesting than what we got. Eren started the series comparing humanity to cattle in a pen. He ends the series being literally sheparded by fate to his death like cattle to a slaughterhouse.
And yet we get no exploration of that at all.
It’s lame. Everything about this is lame. From a storytelling perspective, Eren was just along for the ride. Who would want to reread this series now? A story about a boy who’s quest for freedom neither ends tragically nor happily, but is just forgotten about by the end. What’s the point?
There is none.
Eren’s journey ends up lost in the author’s own ignorance of the very thing this is supposed to be about.
Unfortunately, SNK isn’t interested in 80% of the world being dead. If it were, Eren wouldn’t have gotten such a warm send off.
I was honestly shocked when I read this chapter.
I thought it had been made clear. SNK had come firmly down against genocide. I never imagined Isayama would try a 180 in the final chapter.
And, well, he did, and here we are.
SNK is pro-genocide.
To wit:
Once Eren’s abominable plan is explained to everyone, he is lavished with love and comfort by his friends.
Armin did punch Eren for being callous about Mikasa, but overall all Armin had nothing but sympathy and understanding for Eren. They held hands and hugged and gave Eren a tender farewell.
All they talk about is how great a sacrifice Eren is making.
Not the sacrifice of 80% of all people, but the sacrifice that Eren personally is making of himself.
I don’t know what deranged mindset Isayama has that made him think this was sensible, but no, Eren is not sacrificing anything. He was always going to die. We’ve known this for several dozen chapters. It’s not a sacrifice to befall the fate you were always going to suffer.
He lost nothing. If anything, he gained from this ending.
Eren died knowing he was loved and appreciated by his friends. What more could a dying man ask for?
Eren is rewarded by the story for killing 80% of humanity.
His ultimate fate was no worse than was expected even before he committed the genocide, and he went out in the knowledge that his friends loved him for it.
It doesn’t even make logical sense that his friends would be so receptive to what he did.
There is no difference between Eren’s plan and what we thought Eren’s plan was before this chapter came out.
Armin thought Eren’s plan was to murder humanity to ensure his safety, and Armin was appalled. Armin was willing to sacrifice his life to ensure Eren failed. He was truly acting for the greater good of humanity.
In this chapter, Armin learns that Eren’s plan is actually to murder most of humanity to ensure his safety, and Armin loves him.
Again, hand holding, hugging, “thank you.” No mention of the unfathomable harm caused. The 80% killed are not even a footnote in this chapter.
Even after the fact, Eren’s friends showed no qualms with Eren essentially winning and procuring their safety through genocide.
When previously the mere thought of that was what motivated them to lay down their lives to stop him.
I don’t think Isayama believes this genocide is supposed to bear on how we think of Eren. I say, having just read the chapter that’s all about Eren, in which his genocide doesn’t bear on how his friends think of him. At all.
Was that too great a leap in logic? I apologize if my rationality offends you.
Eren may have died, but he won in the end.
His friends are safe and the world looks set to conclude a peace treaty with Paradis.
I don’t buy for a second that the world is a threat to Paradis anymore, and I don’t buy for a second that there won’t be a peace shortly after the end of the story.
It’s very telling, to me, that it’s the world that’s come to grovel at Paradis’ feet, begging for peace, when previously it was the other way around.
The contours of this “peace,” if you can call it that, were made pretty clear in the epilogue. The world is in ruins while Paradis is stronger than ever, so the world sues for peace for fear of Paradis attacking further.
This is the moral of the story. Frankly, it’s been staring at us in the face the whole time.
How do you end the cycle of violence?
The answer is to win. To be stronger. More determined.
The only peace is enforced peace through domination.
Peace through the barrel of a gun.
To be continued in part II (and possibly part III)

The Second Mrs Cullano
As we all know, Esme Platt is not Carlisle Cullano’s first wife, nor is she his second - she is actually his third. But she is the love of his life, the reason for his breathing, and so when he marries for the second time, it’s clear that wives are nothing to soulmates.
Esme Platt enjoys the wedding of Carlisle Cullano and the Second Mrs Cullano.
Dedicated to my literal partner in this crime, @notquitetwilight, and to our collective projection onto cringe New Jersey mob show stereotypes. Special shoutout to @stregoni-benefici and @carlislesscarf.
Esme felt a soft kiss on her shoulder and smiled. Sun was pouring through the open windows of her bedroom and there was a soft breeze that lifted her hair. He was still here. He shouldn’t have been.
“Good morning,” he whispered against her skin. “You smell so good.”
Esme rolled onto her stomach and curled around her pillow with her smile broadening. “Don’t you have somewhere to be?”
“You kicking me out?”
“No. But I’ve got things to do, too, you know?”
Carlisle lay next to her and stroked her caramel hair, his face close to hers on her pillow. She cracked open an eye and watched him watch her. “Can I stay with you?” he whispered.
She shook her head. “Not for long. For breakfast, though, if you make it.”
“I don’t wanna leave this bed.”
“You’re gonna have to at some point, baby. You’ve got responsibilities today.”
“Tell me to stay, Esme. Tell me not to do it.” He ran a strong hand over her neck and gently wrapped it around her throat, fingers tilting her jaw to the side.
She laughed quietly, sleep making her mind hazy. “No. I want you to have a wife and a family. You’ve always wanted that, but I haven’t. I still want to be me for a while yet.”
“You wouldn’t stop being you just for being my wife.”
Esme took the hand around her throat and brought it up to kiss. Carlisle closed her eyes at the touch of her lips. “We’ve talked about this, for years. Decades. I can be your person, but I can’t be your wife. I won’t be anyone’s wife again.”
“I’m not anyone. Please, Esme. Marry me.”
She stretched her arms up and laughed. “Not today!” But she rolled over and wrapped her legs around him and pulled him against her, loving him as best she could in the soft sunrise.
After, they followed their usual routine of showering together and dressing. Since their days of teenage love they enjoyed the quiet of domesticity. Outside the walls of their homes wars raged on their streets but in her old house, in his sprawling estates, it was just them, and today was no different. He zipped her skirt and she buttoned his shirt and they walked arm in arm down the street for coffee and bagels. They took a booth at the back of the cafe, although it didn’t matter if anyone saw them - they had never been a secret. Besides, they both kept guns strapped to them and knives hidden in their jackets and coats.
Esme leaned back in her chair, blowing steam off the top of her coffee. “You’re sure about this one?”
Carlisle regarded her over his phone and considered the question. “Yeah. It’s gotta be someone, why not her?”
“It doesn’t have to be someone,” she reminded him gently. “You could go it alone. Well, as alone as you will ever be. You’ve always got me.”
“Yeah. But I want someone. I want a wife. And the wife I want doesn’t want me, so I gotta choose the next best thing. Besides, you know her family’s reputation, that’s nothing to turn my nose up at.”
“Ever the pragmatist.”
He gave her one of the smiles he saved just for her. “Aw, you hurt me, Es. I do like her. She’s got spirit, and she’s smart as hell. She likes the high life and she wants kids sooner rather than later, and… and she makes me laugh. She makes me feel wanted.”
“I think most of the east coast wants you,” Esme said quietly, avoiding his gaze. It wasn’t that she was jealous - how could she be, when he made her feel so adored all the time? - but it irritated her that this woman was able to give him what he wanted, and she couldn’t. One marriage to the wrong man had ruined the institution for her and now not even Carlisle could heal that wound. Yes, her first husband had died violently at her hand for his transgression, but that wasn’t the point. The transgression had occured in the first place. That was frightening.
“Don’t be angry, darling. You know it’s still you.” Carlisle reached over the table and stroked her hand and Esme felt safe again. She held his gaze and nodded slightly. “It’ll always be you. You’re mine, before anyone and everyone else.”
She smiled, her mood improved. He had always been happy to declare his feelings with her, and even now, on the morning of his wedding to another woman, in a nondescript coffee shop, he made her feel like the most adored woman. On the middle finger of her right hand she still wore the first expensive ring he had ever bought her, and it cost as much as her parents’ house. It was a gaudy thing, a thick diamond set on a band of smaller cut gems that they had chosen together the day after she killed Charles. It was Carlisle’s promise to her - that no matter who else came along, no matter what the world threw at them, they would love each other before anyone and anything else. He wore a similar ring she bought him on his little finger of his right hand. They never took their rings off. His first wife had hated it - understandably - but she had got her share in the divorce when Carlisle had refused to forsake Esme. She looked down at the ring and it sparkled. She’d had it cleaned for the wedding today especially.
“Are you sure me coming today is a good idea?” she asked after a long moment.
He squeezed the hand he held. “Yeah. I need you there.”
“She’ll be mad.”
“She’s always got something to be mad about. Besides, she knows the deal and you’re non-negotiable.”
“I don’t want to upset anyone on their wedding day, Carlisle.”
He shifted his chair around the table and leaned closer to her. “What about me? You wanna upset me on my wedding day?”
She bit her lip and grinned. “I never want to upset you.”
“Then be a good girl. Come for me.” He rested his hand on her thigh under the table and Esme glanced around the cafe. No one paid them any mind. “Look at me.”
She met her lover’s piercing gaze and bit her lip.
“You gonna come for me?”
She nodded and gasped quietly when he rewarded her with a kiss. Esme could taste the coffee on Carlisle’s lips. He wanted her, he needed her, and she would never let him down.
Esme’s cousin begrudgingly helped her get ready for the wedding. She said it was indecent for the mistress to turn up, let alone in a red silk dress barely held together by strands of diamonds across the back, but Esme smugly told her the groom had bought it for her especially, and who was she to refuse him? As a precaution she strapped her Colt Python to her thigh - it was an old machine, temperamental, but it made her feel powerful and she had a more reliable weapon in her clutch, as well as blades hidden in her shoes - and touched up her hair. Curls pinned to her head, diamonds dripping from her ears, and Carlisle’s dress draped across her, Esme felt more sensual than ever. When she sat in the pew at the wedding mass and thought of how the groom had sighed between her thighs mere hours before, she felt holy. She sat with his cousins a few rows back and even when the blushing bride strutted down the aisle, he couldn’t keep his eyes from Esme for long.
They were lucky to be able to have a Roman Catholic service as everyone knew that Carlisle’s first marriage had been valid, but enough money had been slipped to the dioceses to push through an annulment, and so in the eyes of the Church this was his first marriage. There was some humour in that. The familiar words were spoken, hymns and prayers recited, and after what felt like a lifetime, and no time at all, Carlisle was walking down the aisle with the new Mrs Cullano on his arm. Sadness twinged at Esme’s stomach. That could have been me. It should have been. He’s mine.
The reception was tolerable, enjoyable in its tackiness and extravagance. Everything was white and puffy and the hundreds of guests stuffed into the grand ballroom of the coastal hotel were drunk within the first course. It was how a Jersey wedding should have been, though, and Esme appreciated it for what it was. By the time the first dance came, she was lightly buzzed and enjoying catching up with the biggest names in east coast crime, many of whom were old family friends. Business people and politicians, state senators and property moguls joined them too, tying together the legitimate and illegitimate powers that kept the region affluent and fun, and most didn’t know where the legality ended and illegality started. By the time Esme snorted a line of cocaine from the chest of a mayor’s daughter she didn’t much care and the pair fell about laughing in the bathroom. As if called by the sound of Esme’s happiness, the moment was cut short by the sound of the bride herself outside.
“Lisa, can you fucking help me? This dress is a fucking nightmare, you gotta hold it up, okay?”
“You better go,” Esme advised the girl, no older than twenty-two by the looks of it, “before you meet Bridezilla up close and personal.”
The girl giggled and darted from the bathroom just as the bride scrambled her way through the door. The dress she had chosen was appropriately enormous, tight on top and blooming into an extravagant ball gown from the waist down, and Esme wasn’t surprised that she needed three bridesmaids to help her through the door.
“God, I’m dying to sit down properly-” she moaned over her shoulder before her eyes fell on Esme. Esme patted around her nose, watching her own pretty reflection in the mirror. “Oh. I didn’t know you were here.”
“I responded to your invitation,” Esme replied mildly. “Lovely dress.” She turned her attention to her lipstick and dotted a fresh coat on, pointedly ignoring the bride.
The second Mrs Cullano turned back to her bridesmaids and then looked at Esme, dithering between the two. There was a long pause before she turned to her entourage. “Stay outside. Make sure no one comes in, alright?” The bridesmaids made noises of agreement and the door swung shut, and then it was just Esme and Carlisle’s new wife.
After Mrs Cullano said nothing, Esme broke the silence. “You’ve organised a wonderful day. Are you enjoying yourself?”
Mrs Cullano’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not happy you’re here.”
“Oh?”
“I know why you’re here.”
“To see one of my dearest friends marry the woman he loves, of course.”
“Don’t play cute.”
Esme smiled sweetly. “You think I’m cute?”
“Cut the shit.”
She sighed and looked at the bride. “What’s on your mind, Mrs Cullano?”
“It’s real tacky you’re here, you know?”
“He wants me here. I came because he asked me to be here. I wouldn’t be here without an invitation.”
“I didn’t invite you.”
Esme pulled her invitation from her clutch and handed it to her. “Yes, you did.”
The bride threw it aside, angry. “Give up! I won! He doesn’t want you!”
Esme smiled at her sadly. There was nothing to say that could bring the bride any comfort. The truth was, Carlisle did want her. He wanted her more than anyone and anything, but that didn’t matter to this woman. This woman knew she had just pledged her life to a man who couldn’t love her completely. She was angry for it. “He’s my friend,” was all she could say.
“Get new friends.”
“I won’t stand in the way of your happiness, Mrs Cullano, or his. Above anything else, I love him and I want him to have the most wonderful life. I can’t give him the life he wants, but you can. Why would I jeopardize that?”
It was the wrong thing to say in hindsight. Esme knew that the moment the bride launched at her with murder in her eyes. Her clawing fingers reached out and she managed to get in one good scratch before Esme had her arms locked behind her and ready to pop from their joints. “Easy,” she whispered against Mrs Cullano’s ear. The acrylics on her fingers made her face sting, but the skin hadn’t been broken. “Calm down. Like you said, you won, you’re his wife. Don’t fight me for anything more, because you will lose, do you understand me?”
“Are you threatening me?” Mrs Cullano gasped.
Esme tightened her grip and the bride hissed. “Yes. Raise a hand to me again and Carlisle’s love for you will not save you. You want to see who he will really choose if it comes down to it? Because I do not have my doubts. Do you?”
Just as the bride’s whines rose in volume along with her pain, Esme let her go. She gripped under her elbow and held her upright to stop her from falling. “You got in a good scratch, I’ll give you that. But work on your attack and maybe you’ll take out an eye next time, alright? You’ll need protection if you’re going to love him.”
“Are you threatening me?” Mrs Cullano asked again.
There was no kindness left in Esme’s eyes. “Yes.”
The two women stared at each other for a long moment. The new bride broke first. Esme sniffed and checked her reflection before stalking out of the bathroom, not a hair out of place. She pulled on the diamond strap of her dress and was close to the ballroom door when Carlisle stepped out. His smile was so bright when he saw her and he reached for her hands. When he noticed the scratches across her face his forehead creased.
“What happened?” he asked, tender fingers touching the marks. Across the corridor there was a set of glass doors open to the terrace, and it was dark out there. There were a few wedding guests milling around but quick steps had the pair hidden in the gloom. Overhead, stars popped across the inky sky. With her arm in Carlisle’s, they found their way down garden paths and to the beach. No one saw them.
“Your wife doesn’t like me,” Esme told him, smiling. His face was barely visible in the darkness but his bright hair caught the light of the stars. Their walk eventually slowed as their shoes crunched on the sand.
“She did this?”
Esme nodded. “It’s alright, she deserved to get in a good swipe. It won’t happen again, though.”
“No, it won’t,” Carlisle replied angrily. “Who does she think she is?”
“The new Mrs Cullano, protecting the honour of her marriage,” Esme pointed out with a light laugh. “I’d do the same. I don’t mind, really. I understand her anger.”
“Esme,” he said, his voice softening. “How can I love someone who hurt you?”
“You’re the only one who can hurt me, Carlisle.” She wound an arm around the back of his shoulders and closed her eyes when he rested his forehead against hers.
“I’ll never hurt you.”
“I know.” And he never had. Not with a hand, not with a word. No one had ever loved anyone like Carlisle loved Esme, and she knew it. “You’re so good to me. What did I do to deserve you?”
Carlisle rested one hand at the small of her back and ran the fingers of his other hand up her spine. “Thank you for wearing this dress. You look beautiful.”
She smiled in the night. “Thank you for choosing it for me.”
“Gotta let the whole world see how wonderful my girl is.”
“Call me that again.”
“My girl?”
She hummed and began gently swaying, moving him to dance with her to the sound of the ocean. “You’re my person, you know?”
“Yeah, I know. And you’re my person. Always have been. Always will be.”
Carlisle’s soft kiss touched Esme’s cheek and she sighed in bliss. “I love you, Carlisle.”
“I love you, too, Esme. More than anything. Always.”

yona 197 thoughts
Firstly, behold. I am alive. This chapter honestly made my brain malfunction for a good minute or so, I legit had something akin to a stroke. I honestly believe this chapter encapsulates what has gone wrong with Yona’s storytelling. I understand this is a ‘memoir’, but even backstories whose existence is to deliver exposition require decent consistent characterisation, and a balanced mixture of ‘show don’t tell’ mixed with foreshadowing to result in something... bearable. This chapter was legitimately almost unbearable to read because I think Kusa herself has lost the plot.
To organise my thoughts Imma just put some lil subheadings.
Yon-hi
You know what? Ever since chapter 190 I realised that Yon-hi didn’t have much of a character other than that of an exposition clown. So this lame wrap up on her character was bearable to read, because it’s not as if she had the potential to be anything more than a ye old exposition dump. It’s still frustrating to read her ‘acknowledge’ her own faults, which also make no sense since we haven’t seen a proper build up in a change of thoughts. Yes, she acknowledged her husband was a brute to a certain extent, but apart from this chapter I don’t see her recognising the IMPORTANCE of her position and how her passiveness is stopping her from wielding more influence to prevent tragedy that so clearly hurts her. Sure, she notices that as a country bumpkin amongst nobles she stands out, but even 10 years after the genocide of the priests she never once confronted her husband about it. Or anyone really. Why the change of heart now? The excuse that her husband and Kashi (whom she wasn’t really friends with in the first place?? Honestly I think she was just attached to her out of guilt for what happened) are dead doesn’t explain why she would suddenly have the urge to take some sort of action since the past decade proves she thrives in complacency.
Additionally her relo with her son... I don’t even understand it anymore. She claims she loves Soo-Won but then she writes a letter to her brother-in-law basically asking him to ‘watch out for him’ like MA’AM HE IS YOUR SON. What happened to the role she devoted herself to, as a MOTHER?? I honestly give up trying to understand it.
Il
Oh boi. I thought Yon-hi and Yu-hon had an awful characterisation but Il really takes the cake. I thought I could accept Il’s cowardice since it his duality has been hinted at throughout the whole manga, but honestly it makes close to no sense here. I’m surprised no-one decided to assassinate him the first few years into his reign. I would’ve done it tbh.
This chapter just brings more questions into his passive nature. Why the HELL did he just sit and wait around for something to happen after hearing about the future? Yes, as a religious devotee, he probably accepted the future as fact, but why didn’t he do ANYTHING about it? It seems like he banned weapons out of guilt of his murder, not to actually stop Soo-Won (since he ‘accepted’ that destiny of dying by his nephew’s hands).
If he knew that Yona would not only face hardship from her position as a reincarnation, but her own freaking family, why didn’t he take counter measures? I don’t understand why he wouldn’t try to empower her so that when he would eventually leave her, she would be able to take care of herself. His attitude to Soo-Won also makes no sense too. If he already accepted he would die by his hand, why didn’t he ban/prevent him from visiting the castle? And if he already accepted his fate, why didn’t he just let the marriage go through anyway? He could clearly see that Soo-Won didn’t detest Yona and would care for her, Yona would be happy with him (provided the murder wouldn’t happen lmfao).
Oh and also, if he knew all these shitty events were going to happen? What was his excuse for not taking care of the country, leaving more than hundreds to starve, live in poverty and die? ‘I’m a placeholder and my brother must not become King. Also I leave everything to the gods’ divine will because I’m a really great religious follower uwu’. Not ‘I’ll properly communicate with my brother, nephew and court to make this country a better place while I’m here to prevent the mistakes of the past.’ He acknowledges he’s not a great King. Why doesn’t he acknowledge and humble himself asking for advice from his advisors. Like whAT
Il & Kashi
Poor Kashi lmfao. Kusa in this chapter really trying to convince us they had a loving relationship and Il was simply just trying to avenge his wife. Sure, let’s say Il did love Kashi. He did a really awful way of expressing it, to the point Kashi genuinely believed he only married her to make the designer baby that is Yona. And I don’t see proof of otherwise tbh. I guess you could argue that Il  & Kashi had some chemistry during the garden scene with Ik-Soo... but also Kashi was a ‘kid’ apparently so call the FBI lmfao. There are honestly no scenes or buildup that convince me that Il loved Kashi without the involvement of the divine. Kashi, maybe. I think she admired him but I see none of that from Il. Even when he flat out murders his brother, his defense isn’t ‘YO THAT WAS MY WIFE YOU JUST MURDEREDDD’ It was ‘THAT WAS THE MOTHER OF THE RED DRAGON’. I think these are self explanatory.
Also to that anti-Soo-Won translator who was saying how this line by Il basically disproves everyone who thought he didn’t love Kashi- it really doesn’t. If anything it just shows how terrible the writing has been for this arc because it’s nowhere near believable enough to accept as truth. Show me scenes where Il is actually.... showing affection and being in a loving and equal relationship with his wife smh
Romance
Il’s reliance on ‘love’ also makes no sense as well, and also highlights how problematic romance is in this series. Considering how ‘girl power’ this series is with Kouren, Lili & her bodyguards, Yona and even Kashi to a certain extent, it makes no sense that Il would choose to leave everything to a man who simply ‘loves Yona and will never betray her’. Like,,, did the events that transpired TEACH HIM NOTHING??
Sure only men can become Kings but it seems Queens have a significant position as well. And since Yona is the red dragon... wouldn’t like,, everyone know and respect and hold her on a higher level regardless lmfao like WHAT IS IL THINKING?? He knows that Yona ended up as a superficial spoilt princess as she grew older, but what did he do to rectify that?? n o t h i n g, except attempt to throw another man (Hak) to help solve the (future) problem.
A great grey point this manga has made since the beginning of the series is ‘Prioritising one individual will cause an entire Kingdom to fall to ruin’. So this is why I don’t understand Il’s actions. Yu-hon committed genocide for his wife, whom he loved (also a really poorly built up romance but this chapter ain’t about them), and APPARENTLY murdered Kashi too (dang it... such a weak and predictable outcome, I’m disappointed in you Kusa). Il killing Yu-hon caused Soo-Won & all the Yuhon stans to seek vengeance (although he also did kinda murder him for the sake of Kouka, but nonetheless her adored his father). SO WHY ON EARTH DOES IL THINK LOVE FROM ANOTHER PERSON IS GONNA SAVE HIS DAUGHTER. MAYBE FOR SOMEBODY ELSE BUT CERTAINLY NOT THE ROYAL DAMN FAMILY.
Also just because Hak clearly was devoted to and had affection for Yona, did not mean that Yona would feel the same way, which is arguably is ANOTHER IMPORTANT FACTOR IN A RELATIONSHIP. It seems like Il doesn’t give a damn about his freaking daughter honestly. But maybe who knows, Il has 500 IQ and decided to be passive so Yona would develop feelings for Hak. It was all part of his master plan, while he left most of his kingdom to suffer, no biggie.
Writing
This was such a painful arc to read. I swear Kusa tried to engage her fanbase by constantly making plot twists every chapter. Yu-hon is a good guy. SIKE he’s not. SIKE Il is kind of worse. SIKE Yu-hon bad and should never be one the throne. Il is an okay guy. SIKE he’s borderline religiously fanatic. SIKE Yuhon the crazy one. SIKE Il weird af because he marries Kashi to have baby dragon Yona. SIKE he actually loved Kashi he just DiDn’t MAkE HiS FeElings KnoWn.
Honestly that doesn’t even cover how inconsistent other characters like Yon-hi are either. Bleugh
Predictions for 198?
Maybe Yona will take it upon herself to rectify the wrongs done and pull herself together. Perhaps also do something more substantial than have a deus ex machina bunch of books deliver to information right into her hands. Also maybe show what Soo-Won thinks of this memoir? Surely he’s read it... if he hasn’t then like bye. This series is honestly breaking my heart with every monthly update I swear.
///might rant more later

fave dr ships and why?? :0
Hmm, that’s a pretty fun question! There are so many fun character interactions in each game that there’s a lot of ships I really like, so I’ll try to briefly just touch on some of my favorites in each game!
There aren’t really any spoilers in my reply, but I’m going to include a read-more anyway because even trying to keep it brief, there were a lot of ships to cover, so it still got pretty long.
In dr1, I honestly really love naegiri. Naegi gets a lot of flack for “not being interesting enough” or “not bringing anything to the table,” but I think he worked really well as the protagonist for the first installment of the series, and I absolutely think he and Kirigiri have a lot of great chemistry. Kirigiri and Naegi’s relationship is all about finding a balance between doubt and belief, and both of them really help each other grow as people. I think their dynamic is at its best in the first game, since Kirigiri gets so much time to shine and really feels more like the deuteragonist of the series than anyone else. Plus watching Naegi try to learn how to read her stoic façade when she’s really quite emotional under the  surface is so much fun.
I’m also a huge fan of aoisakura. I love everything about their interaction, and chapter 4 of dr1 is still one of the best in the whole series in my opinion. Both of them care so much about each other even from early on, and Aoi’s anger at how the others treat Sakura or talk about her like she’s hardly even a person comes across as so legitimate. It’s such a great and largely underrated ship, so I always love to see it.
I also have to say that I like kirizono quite a lot! They don’t have much in the way of interaction in canon, considering how early Maizono dies, but it’s one of those ships where I’m much more interested in the overall potential. Kirigiri seems to have a very good grasp of what Maizono was actually like as a person and what she might have been thinking in her final moments. While she uncovers the truth of the events of chapter 1, she doesn’t see Maizono as irredeemable for tricking Naegi, but merely as someone who was scared and who ultimately couldn’t go through with her own plan. She knew that Maizono was trying to help Naegi in her own way by leaving him a dying message, and I would have loved to see a detective-and-assistant duo with Kirigiri and Maizono in some alternate universe.
Other ships from dr1 that I enjoy even if I’m not super invested in them from an analysis standpoint are celesgiri (how could I not ship the original liar and detective), naekusaba (DR IF really sold me on this one), ishimondo (all around a solid, great ship), and naegami (honestly I just think the idea of Kirigiri and Togami both dating Naegi but barely tolerating each other as friends is really funny).
Sdr2 is probably the game where I wound up the least invested in shipping, but there are still a few that I like!
Hinanami isn’t quite as appealing to me as naegiri, mostly due to Nanami being used twice for Hinata’s character development, but they have some really cute moments that I do enjoy a lot, and I really love any interaction between the two of them as gamer friends. Nanami is so much more mischievous than most people give her credit for; I still can’t help remembering when I replayed sdr2 a year or two ago and got to the part with her threatening to poke Hinata’s eyes out during an investigation, and I nearly lost my shit because I didn’t remember it at all from previous playthroughs.
I’m not quite as invested in komahina as I thought I would be when I first got into DR, but I definitely don’t mind it either! I think Komaeda’s feelings for Hinata are pretty textual and undeniable; lines like “I’m in love with the hope that’s sleeping inside you” are impossible, in my opinion, to handwave as “just a friend thing,” and Megumi Ogata has all but stated outright that her character song for Komaeda is specifically about Hinata.
Of course, I definitely think Komaeda would need to work on a lot of his internalized ideas about talent and self-worth, and that he and Hinata would have to start as friends first before carrying their relationship into anything romantic, but if their really cute interation in ndrv3’s talent development plan is anything to go off of, I think Hinata definitely does want to help Komaeda value himself more and wants to be friends with him.
As for other ships that I enjoy more casually, I like twobuki (if that’s even what people are still calling Twogami/Impostor and Ibuki as a ship), sondam (all of Sonia’s nerding out about Gundam’s chuunibyou interests is honestly super adorable), nanamiki (I feel like Nanami and Mikan could honestly have a cute dynamic if Mikan weren’t under Junko’s influence), and… I actually have no idea for this ship name, but Impostor/Hinata is really sweet. This is more related to dr3, but one of the few things I did come out feeling positively about was Impostor/Mitarai, despite everything else about how the story turned out.
Finally, there’s ndrv3! There’s quite a lot of ships I really love here, so it’s actually a little hard to narrow it down.
I hardly think I need to mention saiouma at this point, since it’s the ship I talk about the most on this blog, but it’s still my favorite ship from pretty much anything ever. I love their dynamic so much: the way they both embody the themes of “truth” and “lies” within the game respectively, the way they constantly want to know more about each other while being afraid to open up or trust each other completely, and the fact that they so perfectly manage to capture the chase of the “phantom thief vs. detective” trope to the point that it was even lampshaded in Ouma’s love hotel... all of these things just make it so much fun.
It’s another ship where I just love thinking about the potential, whether in an AU where Ouma might have lived or else where the killing game never took place at all. I honestly really love ships that deal with a lot of slow-burn and both characters thinking their affections are unrequited when it turns out they’re actually both just idiots with a bad case of pining. I also really love the fact that, in my opinion, it’s a ship where Saihara would have to really take the initiative in the end—otherwise, Ouma is just going to keep trying to run away every time he drops an “I love you,” or “you’re my favorite.”
I also really, really love himiten. It’s a ship that gets a lot more flack than it deserves, in my opinion, and it’s sad to see that it’s a little underappreciated these days. There are flaws and problems within the ship, of course, but these are things that are actually addressed within the game itself. Himiko’s apathy and disregard towards Tenko’s feelings is called out pretty bluntly in the later parts of chapter 3, and she winds up mourning Tenko’s death and taking her last advice to heart more than anyone else.
Meanwhile, while Tenko certainly meant well and always had Himiko’s best interests at heart, it’s true that she came across as somewhat condescending sometimes (albeit unintentionally) by treating Himiko like a cute animal instead of a person.  I think that she understood Himiko’s feelings a lot better by chapter 3, which is why she prioritized trying to let Himiko talk to Angie one more time despite her own misgivings about Angie. Tenko grew a lot more as a character than a lot of people give her credit for, and I would have loved to see any post-game scenario where Himiko and Tenko could’ve finally started a relationship on equal footing outside of the game.
I actually have two entire ships for Miu that I am equally fond of. Both kiiruma and irumatsu are really great in my opinion, in totally different ways. The sheer chaotic potential of kiiruma gets overlooked a lot of times, I think, but both of them are complete disasters. They have so much fun together and it really shows, both in canon and in the talent development plan as well. Kiibo is so wonderful and I love him so much, because you’d think he’d be the voice of reason as a “cold, logical robot”—but honestly, he’s just as messed-up and over the top as Miu. I mean, he did photograph her poop on what turned out to be a live audience national broadcast and he didn’t see anything wrong with this.
Kiibo is one of the few characters who vocally talks about missing Miu after her death in chapter 4, and he repeatedly tells her how much he appreciates her maintenance work on him both in canon and in one of their talent development scenes. In one such scene, he even mentions wanting to continue their ongoing relationship after they graduate, which I think is surprisingly sweet and adorable for the two of them. Honestly, Miu is about as wild as a DR character ever gets, and I love the idea of her and Kiibo just having fun with each other.
Meanwhile, Kaede and Miu’s dynamic is a lot more back-and-forth. Kaede spends a good part of her FTEs absolutely frustrated and fed up with Miu, but also decidedly worried for her well-being and wondering how she might get her to be more of a team player. She’s not afraid to put her foot down when Miu crosses the line, but she’s also one of the few people who’s ever been willing to stand by Miu and encourage her or actually be her friend in spite of how awful Miu is at interacting with others.
Even in the talent development plan, Kaede’s often seen together with Miu a lot, which I think is super cute and confirms that even at Hope’s Peak, she’d still be trying to make sure Miu had a friend around. And she was able to tell that, despite what a disaster Miu’s idea with the Christmas lights was, it was Miu’s own way of trying to add to the festivities and do something nice for other people. All in all, it’s one of my favorite wlw DR ships, and I really love when fanworks capture just how shy or flustered Miu got around Kaede sometimes.
Of course, I like momoharu a lot as well! It’s one of the ships that has grown on me quite a bit in my absence, mostly just because despite all of Momota’s flaws, he really does want Maki to love herself first and foremost. Maki’s own feelings for Momota are so important to her character growth and really represent her feeling as though she’s finally made a choice for the first time in her life, and it’s really heartwarming to see. Also, any ship where the girl could lift a guy up with one arm without breaking a sweat is a pretty good ship in my opinion.
As for other ndrv3 ships that I enjoy a lot, there’s saihoshi (Hoshi is extremely underrated as a character, and I adore how sweet his FTEs and salmon mode with Saihara were; it’s also another ship where I feel Saihara would have to really take the initiative to make Hoshi fully open up, which I like), amamatsu (Kaede and Amami had a lot of really funny, great interaction in chapter 1 and some fun banter in their FTEs, so I would’ve loved to see more of it), and harumatsu/kaemaki (again, they have a lot of potential and it would have been extremely interesting to see them interact more).
I also like saiibo, not so much in the way that most people ship it (their love hotel is cute, don’t get me wrong!), but mostly because Kiibo’s FTEs are the funniest set of FTEs in the whole game in my opinion, and the twist where they were both looking down on each other without the other one knowing just made my jaw drop before I started laughing my ass off. They’re almost as much of a disaster together as Kiibo and Miu are, and I think the humor in their dynamic sometimes gets overlooked.
There are even more ships that I like, and I could keep going on and on, but I should probably leave things off here. Character interactions are so much fun in DR, both because of the genuine growth and character development from a lot of the cast, but also because so many of them are so whacky and borderline cartoonish that it’s just really fun imagining further interactions between them. Thank you for the fun ask, anon!

I adored your post about the ending of 01 of Fruits Basket. I liked 19 more after I started season 2 and could stop comparing them, because there were some parts of 01 that hit much harder even as I wanted more of the story. For 01, the scene with Yuki and Kagura was pretty powerful for me and I loved Yuki’s line about running away. I wish that had been included in the remake somehow. Do you have any more thoughts on that theme and Yuki’s character?
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it <3
My thoughts on Yuki's character in 01 veer a bit on the unpopular side. I do agree, wholeheartedly, that compared to the depth and development Yuki gets in the manga, 01 did him dirty. HOWEVER, in the vein of making sense of what we got from 01, I'm I don't think Yuki's little arc in that anime should go overlooked. It's supremely watered down in comparison, but, for what it is, I like it a lot.
When compared to the manga (and, I'll say generously, even the reboot), 01 falls flat in its inability to really flesh the plot and its characters out. And, this is all due to the anime needing to tell a complete story from about a third of its source material. So, 01 had to find a way to wrap up Yuki's character by the time we get Kyo's true form when, in accordance with the manga, that's when Yuki's arc is really only beginning. We never get to see Yuki interact with the student council or become friends with Kakeru, which really mold him into a more genuine and confident guy, and nor do we get to see Yuki understand his true feelings for Tohru. So, we're left with these half baked-instances of Yuki's character where his decision to become student council president goes nowhere, and his relationship with Tohru is presented as a more genuinely budding/possible romance rather than weird and performative (because we also never get to see the weird moments like 'I'll kidnap you', etc.). Which, we been knew.
BUT, THAT BEING SAID: Yuki, I think, is the only character in the 01 anime who gets any real semblance of a character arc where he undergoes a change. (I wish I could say the same thing for Kyo since the true form arc is something that does change him, but his bizarre disconnect with Tohru at the very end there with the whole 'when are you gonna make lunch, bitch I'm HUNGRY' is just awful writing and really retracts from any development and sets him back to square one. So, rip Kyo).
Your mention of Yuki's conversation with Kagura is gonna make my next point obvious BECAUSE YOU RAISE A VERY GOOD & IMPORTANT POINT but let me explain 😌
With no student council, no Kakeru, and no 'Tohru is actually my mom' realization, there is only one angle left for the 01 anime to explore with Yuki and that's his relationship with the curse, specifically his relationships with Kyo and Akito.
Yuki and Kyo's relationship in 01 is something else that gets the short stick, so we never really get to understand why Kyo blames Yuki like he does and we never learn that Yuki envies Kyo as much as he does. So, their rivalry is chalked up to old zodiac convention, because the conflict of the curse in 01 isn't a supernatural bond but a way of living that is engrained so deeply in this family's history that challenging it would be, blasphemous, I guess.
(sidenote: how cool would it have been if this angle was explored? That when Akito said to Tohru: 'you'll suffer as we suffer', the Sohma's suffering is because centuries ago their family was cursed for some punishable offense by the original Sohma against God or something and now they have to suffer and atone for their ancient sins? [And, like, Akito is dying because he in particular is a direct descendent of that original Sohma---I may have fucking cracked the code, guys]. But, by the time we get to Fruits Basket, the curse is still intact due to unimpeded tradition rather than like ... any legitimate force or threat. IDK)
ANYWAY: Kagura and Yuki's conversation about "why does it have to be this way?" REALLY cements this vague narrative structure that the curse is convention waiting to be challenged. Tohru has been meddling and challenging Sohma norm since the beginning, and as she goes out there to run after Kyo, Yuki and Kagura have this conversation which really, for the first time in the series, paints the curse as some bullshit that shouldn't dictate WHO the Sohma are, even if it dictates WHAT they are. In running after Kyo, Yuki is setting aside his age old rivalry with Kyo that was more indicative of the curse than it ever was of who they are as people (according to 01, anyway).
And, when Yuki says that he's tired of running and doesn't want to do it anymore, I always interpreted that as Yuki confronting his and Kyo's inability to face fear and uncertainty, as, in that moment, Kyo is desperately trying to avoid the possibility that Tohru might reject him. Whereas, Yuki was always running from the main house, and trying to separate himself from Akito (and, I guess, in a way, 'Sohma' as a concept? IDK we're working with tea leaves here). So, it's, in my opinion, pretty dang powerful at the end of the anime when Yuki helps Shigure to protect Tohru from Akito because he's exhibiting power over his abuser and directly defying him which is GROWTH.
This got so winded and my thoughts became more and more scattered as I wrote it but I guess the TL;DR is
Yuki doesn't get the extensive development that he does in the manga, but in 01, he contradicts zodiac convention (i.e, the curse, I guess) in going after Kyo, he confronts his cowardly and complacent way of running from his own bullshit, AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, HE STANDS UP TO HIS ABUSER WHICH IS PRETTY RAD. & IDK, in a way I just think this shit rules. (I also really live for Yuki getting to scream & yell & roll around in the dirt).

Chapter Twenty-Six: Delusions of Power.
Mel spent the next days in constant anxiety.
She even stopped her mischief out of fear of how the interview could backfire, it was keeping her awake at night.
At the end of a particularly rough quidditch practice Ron, Ginny and her were walking back to the castle in a very grim mood, but they still were curious about what exactly had Mel added to Harry's story.
"Well, you know," Their friend replied as she undid her braid. "Talked about Barty Jr. and how his father brought him from Azkaban — and that he fired Winky, which was a complete lack of respect for the honourable work of House-elves  (Hermione was very pleased with that part), I talked about the corruption in the Ministry, that Fudge made it very clear that the main reason why he didn't want to act was because of the money he was getting from pureblood families involved... I reckon I'll never get a job in the Ministry after this."
"I hope this works out," Ginny said. "Maybe the Order we'll get more help once people read the article, your version makes much more sense than whatever Fudge wants to sell to the public."
They walked into the Great Hall leaving mud stains on their path, Hermione and Harry were having dinner already, and they seemed to be arguing.
"Is that what she was doing?" Harry was asking. "Well, wouldn't it have been easier if she'd just asked me whether I liked her better than you?"
"Girls don't often ask questions like that," Hermione responded.
"Well, they should! Then I could've just told her I fancy her, and she wouldn't have had to get herself all worked up again about Cedric dying!"
"You're still talking about that?" Mel frowned. "Listen, I agree with you about Cho exaggerating a bit, but to be fair you're slow at picking up hints."
"You're one to talk," Harry retorted.
"I'm not saying what she did was sensible," said Hermione, throwing a nervous glance at them and interrupting before things got awkward. "I'm just trying to make you see how she was feeling at the time."
"You should write a book," Ron said, "translating mad things girls do so boys can understand them."
"Yeah!" said Harry.
"Girls are humans just like you," Mel scowled. "There are no 'rules' — Just try to get to know the girl for a change instead of just looking for a quick snog."
Harry looked back at the Ravenclaw table wistfully, Cho was leaving it with her friend Marietta, and she didn't glance his way before walking out.
"So, how was Quidditch practice?" He sighed, turning his attention back to his friends.
"It was a nightmare," said Ron.
"Oh come on," Hermione tried, "I'm sure it wasn't that —"
"Yes, it was," Ginny pouted. "It was appalling. Angelina was nearly in tears by the end of it."
Mel let out a long sigh and pushed her hair out of the way, it was starting to get a bit impossible to handle at this point and it was always messy, she really needed to get rid of half of it.
"Can't say I'm doing marvellous work as a beater if I'm honest. I'm not as strong as Angelina would like..."
Tumblr media
By the time Mel was going to play her first game ever the atmosphere was extremely dense. Her Hufflepuff friends wished her luck in a way that let her know they already felt like the winners. She couldn't blame them, Ron was looking greener and greener with every step he took towards the dressing room.
Mel was about to enter when Fred caught up and kissed her. She couldn't even react properly.
"For good luck!" He smirked. "Isn't that the tradition?"
Mel was flustered, she ushered him away and stood there in shock, hearing as he laughed about her reaction with George. Someone cleared his throat behind her, it was Harry.
"When did you get here?" She asked in dread.
"Just a moment," Harry said, a faint blush on his cheeks. "But I saw you were... er... having a moment. I figured it was better if I just waited until Fred was gone."
"Okay," Mel said clumsily, pushing her hair back.
"I wanted to wish you good luck," He said. "It's your first game... when it was my game you were there so... it's my turn, isn't it?"
"You don't have to," Mel said, panicking about Harry kissing her cheek after such a long time without physical contact. She no longer knew what boundaries existed between them.
"It's the least I can do," Harry hesitated before awkwardly stepping forward, holding out his hand so she could shake it.
Mel grabbed it and shook it firmly.
"Good luck."
"Thanks," She smiled.
Once inside and dressed in the uniform, Mel stared at her reflection in awe.
"I'm wearing a Quidditch uniform," She told Ginny. "And I look so good..."
"Yeah, yeah, you're pretty," Ginny rolled her eyes grinning. "Let's go, before your big-head stops you from looking away..."
Tumblr media
The good part? Ginny caught the snitch.
They still lost.
She'd threw a bludger directly to a chaser and caused him to drop the quaffle, but Slope was dreadful, he kept missing every time. Ron was beyond miserable when the game was over, now not only the Slytherins were singing, but also the Hufflepuffs.
Back in the common room, once she had taken a bath, she walked in and listened to Harry and Ginny's conversation as she sat down tiredly next to them, hanging her legs over the armrest and leaning on Ginny's shoulder.
"I was lucky," The girl was saying. "It wasn't a very fast snitch and Summerby's got a cold, he sneezed and closed his eyes at exactly the wrong moment. Anyway, once you're back on the team —"
"Ginny, I've got a lifelong ban."
"You're banned as long as Umbridge is in the school. There's a difference. Anyway, once you're back, I think I'll try out for Chaser. Angelina and Alicia are both leaving next year and I prefer goal-scoring to seeking anyway."
Mel sighed, rubbing her temples.
"You were right about how cathartic it is to be a Beater, but I think I'm not good enough for the position. Maybe chaser— or even seeker, if Harry insists on staying on the bench —"
"It's not like I want to stay there, you know?"
"If you say so," The girl yawned.
"Angelina still won't let him resign," Ginny added, making a vague head movement towards her brother. "She says she knows he's got it in him."
"Because he does," Mel rolled her eyes. "That idiot... if I could take away his insecurities by knocking his lights out with a bludger, I'd do it."
Tumblr media
The next morning during breakfast was the moment when the bomb dropped. Two editions of the Quibbler arrived –one for Mel and one for Harry– inside they had their interviews. Not only that, but at least ten owls landed around the table, all with letters directed to them.
"It's good, isn't it?" Luna sat down between Fred and Ron. "It came out yesterday, I asked Dad to send you a free copy. I expect all these are letters from readers."
"That's what I thought," said Hermione. "Guys, d'you mind if we — ?"
"Help yourself," said Harry.
"I'm too scared to touch any of those," Mel said hesitantly. "Don't want anything on my face..."
"This one's from a bloke who thinks you're off your rocker, Harry," said Ron. "Says Mel is probably hormonal — gross lad, honestly. Ah well..."
"This woman recommends you try a good course of Shock Spells at St. Mungo's," said Hermione.
"This one looks okay, though," said Harry, he was reading through the mail now as well. "Hey, she says she believes us!"
"This one's in two minds," said Fred who had taken the liberty to open the one's directed at Mel. "Says you don't come across as mad people, but he really doesn't want to believe You-Know-Who's back so he doesn't know what to think now... Blimey, what a waste of parchment. I would believe you in a second, Lady."
"Thank you Fred, but I'm afraid you're biased," Mel grinned, deciding to start opening letters too.
"Here's another one you've convinced!" said Hermione happily. "'Having read your side of the story I am forced to the conclusion that the Daily Prophet has treated you very unfairly... Little though I want to think that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has returned, I am forced to accept that you are telling the truth... and Miss Dumbledore's claims seemed to be legitimate, I had a friend who got in trouble with the Ministry and they forgave him in no time after he let go of a few galleons...' Oh, this is wonderful!"
"Another one who thinks you're barking," said Ron, throwing the letter without paying attention, "but this one says you've got her converted, and she now thinks you're a real hero — she's put in a photograph too — wow —"
"At this rate, you won't have to worry about any future dates with Cho," Mel teased.
"What is going on here?" Umbridge asked over their heads. "Why have you got all these letters, Mr Potter, Miss Dumbledore?"
"Is that a crime now? Getting mail?" Fred frowned.
"Be careful, Mr Weasley, or I shall have to put you in detention. Well, Mr Potter?"
Harry pondered his options quietly but shared one resolute look with Mel and knew there was no point. She would find out eventually.
"People have written to us because we gave an interview," said Harry. "About what happened to me last June."
"And about how much of a fraud Fudge is," Mel concluded.
"An interview? What do you mean?" Umbridge asked.
"I mean a reporter asked us questions and we answered them," said Harry. "Here —"
He threw his copy at Umbridge and Mel got a pleasant tug at the base of her stomach at the sight. It quickly faded as she watched the woman read carefully all they'd said.
"When did you do this?" She breathed.
"Last Hogsmeade weekend," said Harry.
"There will be no more Hogsmeade trips for you two."
"How would've guessed?" Mel replied carelessly.
"How you dare... how you could... I have tried again and again to teach you not to tell lies. The message, apparently, has still not sunk in. Miss Dumbledore, hadn't I told you to learn where your place is? You have no right to speak like that about your Minister!"
Mel thought that if she was already in trouble, she was going to earn it fully.
"I thought you'd understand, isn't blood status your biggest priority? That's why you're giving Hagrid such a hard time, right? I'm just following your lead," She glanced at the teachers' table, where Dumbledore was talking to Flitwick without paying attention to them, although she had the feeling he was just pretending. "I'll always be loyal to my people."
"Fifty points from Gryffindor and another week's worth of detentions!" Umbridge spat, barely able to control her anger.
"It'll be my pleasure!" Mel shouted, watching the woman stomp away from the Great Hall.
Tumblr media
Hermione and Mel smiled at each other at the sight of the decree.
— by order of —
The High Inquisitor of Hogwarts
Any student found in possession of the magazine The Quibbler will be expelled.
The above is in accordance with Educational Decree Number Twenty-seven.
Signed:
High inquisitor.
"What exactly are you so happy about?" Harry asked them.
"Oh Harry, don't you remember what Mel said? If she could have done one thing to make absolutely sure that every single person in this school will read your interview, it was banning it!"
If Mel was popular before, now she was almost idolized. The only student at school that had stood up against Umbridge apart from Harry. Of course, there were people like Malfoy, and kids that were related to the death eaters that were definitely not happy about it, but little did they know that Daphne and Erick had her back. Not only that, but several Slytherins were starting to realize some things, as Mel would find out in her next D.A. meeting.
The students weren't the only ones making quiet declarations, Professor Sprout rewarded Harry with twenty points when he'd done nothing but to pass her an empty watering can. Flitwick discretely gave them two boxes of squeaking sugar mice during his class and ran away almost as fast as he'd approached.
Trelawney openly wept and claimed that Harry was not going to suffer an early death after all, but he and Mel would live to a ripe old age, become Minister of Magic and have twelve children. Since she didn't specify which part was for each, Mel blushed deeply at the mention of babies.
Even Cho forgave Harry for his silly mistake on Valentine's day, and she was telling to anyone who was interested that they had shared a lovely date the day he'd done the interview, and that she was very proud of him.
Fred was another person who was taking great pleasure in strutting around the castle with Mel by his side. Students would look at him with sneers and faces of contempt, and although Mel didn't appreciate being treated like a prize, she was definitely enjoying the way Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle and Nott would glare at her from across the hall without being able to touch her.
Seamus approached her and Harry before their Transfiguration class.
"I just wanted to say," He said, avoiding their eyes, "I believe you. And I've sent a copy of that magazine to me mam."
Mel was so pleased that she hugged him, Seamus didn't know how to respond. That night a party took place in the common room, she hadn't seen her friends this happy for a very long time, and she was proud to be part of it.
Tumblr media
"What you did was foolish and impulsive”
"I'm aware."
"I thought we'd agreed on keeping a low profile this year," Dumbledore stared down at her over his glasses.
"We agreed on keeping my lessons a secret. There's nothing in that interview about my lessons with you, Professor. However, we never said I couldn't talk about Fudge."
They were outside the main entrance of the castle, Dumbledore had asked her for a private word as she walked past the entrance after finishing diner. Neither Harry nor Umbridge were near, which could be part of the reason why Dumbledore had asked her now. She didn't know what he'd been doing outside at this hour, but she was more worried about the lecture she was about to get.
"This is not the time to take things lightly," Dumbledore said gravely. "You know you're one of Voldemort's targets, he wants to use you to his advantage and now you've turned into a person of interest for the Ministry as well."
"I already was," Mel replied. "I merely talked about Fudge, I kept you out of the conversation! They might accuse me of slander, but then again they're probably too afraid of you to try it."
"And you're planning to live under my shadow?" Dumbledore asked.
Mel's annoyance increased.
"Of course not! I've improved lots this year, I daresay I'm perfectly capable of looking after myself —"
"You have to grow up first before making such decisions," Dumbledore replied in a hard tone that took her off guard. "That kind of behaviour is what kept Aberforth from turning into his best self. You mustn't follow his lead. Matthew would've wanted you to be better."
"Give me a break, won't you? I'm fifteen — I want to have fun, I hate that I have to act like an adult when all my friends are allowed to fool around and —"
"You've been given enough freedom," The man replied. "Haven't I turned a blind eye to your acts of so-called justice? It wasn't wise of me, but I allowed it. Why?"
"Because you hate Umbridge as much as everyone else?"
"Because you wish to be something else than just a Lastname. What you haven't realized is that you already are Mel, but what you're representing right now is no better than what you used to be. You're repeating history and that won't help you."
Mel was about to reply when a woman's scream reached them. They both turned to the oak doors, hearing attentively. Two trunks came down flying and landed roughly at the foot of the marble staircase, Umbridge walked down in tiny cheerful steps, Trelawney stumbled down holding a bottle of sherry. She was looking around frantically.
"NO!" She yelled, and the students inside the Great Hall walked out to see the scene. "NO! NO! This cannot be happening... It cannot... I refuse to accept it!"
"You didn't realize this was coming? Incapable though you are of predicting even tomorrow's weather, you must surely have realized that your pitiful performance during my inspections, and lack of any improvement, would make it inevitable you would be sacked?" Umbridge asked cruelly.
"You c-can't! You c-can't sack me! I've b-been here sixteen years! H-Hogwarts is m-my h-home!"
"It was your home, until an hour ago, when the Minister of Magic countersigned the order for your dismissal. Now kindly remove yourself from this hall. You are embarrassing us."
Surprisingly, McGonagall stepped forward and hugged the woman protectively.
"There, there, Sibyll... Calm down... Blow your nose on this... It's not as bad as you think, now... You are not going to have to leave Hogwarts..."
"Oh really, Professor McGonagall?" Umbridge sneered. "And your authority for that statement is..?"
Dumbledore opened the door completely, his figure stepping into the scene.
"That would be mine," He said.
Mel followed him, but she stayed behind as he reached the place where Trelawney was.
"Yours, Professor Dumbledore? I'm afraid you do not understand the position. I have here an Order of Dismissal signed by myself and the Minister of Magic. Under the terms of Educational Decree Number Twenty-three, the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts has the power to inspect, place upon probation, and sack any teacher she — that is to say, I — feel is not performing up to the standard required by the Ministry of Magic. I have decided that Professor Trelawney is not up to scratch. I have dismissed her."
"You are quite right, of course, Professor Umbridge. As High Inquisitor you have every right to dismiss my teachers," He smiled the same way she would do whenever she could get away with something. Her father's smile. "You do not, however, have the authority to send them away from the castle. I am afraid that the power to do that still resides with the headmaster, and it is my wish that Professor Trelawney continues to live at Hogwarts."
"No — no, I'll g-go, Dumbledore! I sh-shall l-leave Hogwarts and s-seek my fortune elsewhere —"
"No. It is my wish that you remain, Sibyll," He turned to McGonagall. "Might I ask you to escort Sibyll back upstairs, Professor McGonagall?"
"Of course. Up you get, Sibyll..."
Professor Sprout hurried to help Trelawney by holding her other arm and Professor Flitwick held out his wand and exclaimed "Locomotor trunks!" the objects floated in the air and followed the group of teachers.
"And what," Umbridge continued, so angry she could barely speak, "are you going to do with her once I appoint a new Divination teacher who needs her lodgings?"
"Oh, that won't be a problem," said Dumbledore. "You see, I have already found us a new Divination teacher, and he will prefer lodgings on the ground floor."
"You've found — ? You've found? Might I remind you, Dumbledore, that under Educational Decree Twenty-two —"
"— the Ministry has the right to appoint a suitable candidate if — and only if — the headmaster is unable to find one. And I am happy to say that on this occasion I have succeeded. May I introduce you?"
On queue, there was a sound like hooves behind her and she turned at the same time that the rest. The sight almost made her doubt her sanity, but it wasn't an illusion. There, standing in the entrance was a centaur.
"This is Firenze— I think you'll find him suitable." Dumbledore beamed.
When the crowd erupted into loud exclamations of shock, the old man spoke in a lower voice.
"It's not about breaking the rules for the sake of provoking," He told her. "Is memorizing your way around them, so you can use them in your favour."

The sentence 'I must not tell lies' was throbbing on the back of her hand. Hermione was already waiting for her with a jar of murtlap which she and Harry took turns to use. She knew Harry had felt the first day of her detention because he quickly approached to examine her injuries, although she rejected his help.
"Now you know how it feels," She said calmly. "Now you understand why I couldn't just ignore you, right?"
Harry looked uncomfortable, yet he had no choice but to admit she was right.
Daphne Greengrass was one of the first students to arrive on the day of the D.A. meeting, but she wasn't alone. A total of eight Slytherins had accompanied her and though they looked tense, they wanted to know what Umbridge was hiding, they wanted to learn. Once again, the group welcomed them with open arms.
"You know," Ron told her while he took a break from being Hermione's partner. "I reckon you may be right, maybe not all Slytherins are evil."
"Took you long enough," Mel patted his back lovingly. "Now be a good boy and practice with one of them."
"What?!"
"Are you afraid of snakes, Ronnie?" She raised a brow.
"Of course not!" He said, his ears gaining a reddish colour. "Hey — Hey, you! What's your name?"
He walked up to a fourth-year Slytherin so they could practice together, Mel's chest swelled with pride. It was Harry's turn to walk up to her.
"Okay, you win," He sighed, looking rather impressed. "We haven't got any fights — I guess we can all be friends."
"Can you write that down and sign it?" Mel smirked.
"Nah," He walked away with a smile.

Their first divination class with Firenze proved to be highly interesting. When Mel walked in she felt slightly disoriented, like she had walked out of the castle without really wanting to.
The classroom floor had become springily mossy and trees were growing out of it; their leafy branches fanned across the ceiling and windows, so that the room was full of slanting shafts of soft, dappled, green light.
The students who had already arrived were sitting on the earthy floor with their backs resting against tree trunks or boulders, arms wrapped around their knees or folded tightly across their chests, looking rather nervous. In the middle of the room, where there were no trees, stood Firenze.
"Harry Potter," Firenze walked up to them and shook hands with Harry.
"Er — hi– Er — good to see you..." The boy replied awkwardly.
"And you," said the centaur, inclining his white-blond head. "It was foretold that we would meet again. Miss Dumbledore, you continue to grow into your power, I see."
"Er..." Mel accepted Firenze's hand and shook it, trying not to stare at the bruise on the centaur's chest. "I... I suppose?"
She remembered the night Firenze had saved them from Quirrel, he'd said something about her 'vibrating', she knew enough about herself now to guess he meant her magical skills were quite good.
"Professor Dumbledore has kindly arranged this classroom for us," Firenze said once the students had taken a place on the ground, "in imitation of my natural habitat. I would have preferred to teach you in the Forbidden Forest, which was — until Monday — my home... but this is not possible."
"Please — er — sir —" Parvati had raised her hand, "why not? We've been in there with Hagrid, we're not frightened!"
"It is not a question of your bravery but of my position. I can no longer return to the forest. My herd has banished me."
"Herd?" asked Lavender. "What — oh! There are more of you?"
"Did Hagrid breed you, like the thestrals?" asked Dean.
Mel cringed at the question, Dean immediately realized his mistake, but it was too late.
"I didn't — I meant — sorry..."
"Centaurs are not the servants or playthings of humans," said Firenze calmly.
"Please, sir... why have the other centaurs banished you?" Parvati insisted.
"Because I have agreed to work for Professor Dumbledore. They see this as a betrayal of our kind."
Harry and Mel shifted awkwardly in their places, they could still remember the way the other centaurs had treated Firenze after helping Harry and her to leave the forest.
"Let us begin..."
[Firenze] swished his long palomino tail, raised his hand toward the leafy canopy overhead then lowered it slowly, and as he did so, the light in the room dimmed, so that they now seemed to be sitting in a forest clearing by twilight, and stars emerged upon the ceiling. There were oohs and gasps, and Ron said audibly, "Blimey!"
"Lie back upon the floor," said Firenze in his calm voice, "and observe the heavens. Here is written, for those who can see, the fortune of our races."
Mel laid down between Ron and Harry, her eyes fixed on the ceiling. The centaur's words resonated on her mind. 'Here is written, for those who can see...'
Erick's words also came to her mind.
'Knowing what's written in the stars won't help you.'
Maybe it would have. Maybe she could've skipped her whole thing with Harry and she'd be dating someone else for real, happy to have everything she wanted in life, including her best friend.
A thought crept inside her. If she would've known everything, more importantly, if she knew what's waiting for her in the future, if she still had a chance with Harry... No, she needed to get rid of those thoughts as soon as possible, they weren't even that close. Worse yet, he was dating Cho!
All those novels she'd read for years had messed up her mind, she needed to get a grip on reality. They were over for good, she was sure someone out there was her second chance, and she just had to look around.
"I know that you have learned the names of the planets and their moons in Astronomy," Firenze's voice brought her back abruptly, "and that you have mapped the stars' progress through the heavens. Centaurs have unravelled the mysteries of these movements over centuries. Our findings teach us that the future may be glimpsed in the sky above us..."
"Professor Trelawney did Astrology with us!" said Parvati excitedly. "Mars causes accidents and burns and things like that, and when it makes an angle to Saturn, like now, that means that people need to be extra careful when handling hot things —"
"That is human nonsense."
Ron snorted beside her, Mel had to kick his foot to shut him up.
"Trivial hurts, tiny human accidents... These are of no more significance than the scurryings of ants to the wide universe, and are unaffected by planetary movements."
"Professor Trelawney —"
"— is a human," Firenze replied without getting upset. "And is therefore blinkered and fettered by the limitations of your kind."
If Mel was honest, knowing there were things that humans simply couldn't comprehend was comforting. She could be smart, but at the end of the day, she was still human and had her limits. After a whole year of feeling out of control, the idea was a glorious revelation.
"Sibyll Trelawney may have Seen, I do not know... but she wastes her time, in the main, on the self-flattering nonsense humans call fortune-telling. I, however, am here to explain the wisdom of centaurs, which is impersonal and impartial. We watch the skies for the great tides of evil or change that are sometimes marked there. It may take ten years to be sure of what we are seeing."
Their Professor pointed to a little red dot that was right above them.
"In the past decade, the indications have been that Wizard-kind is living through nothing more than a brief calm between two wars. Mars, bringer of battle, shines brightly above us, suggesting that the fight must break out again soon. How soon, centaurs may attempt to divine by the burning of certain herbs and leaves, by the observation of fume and flame..."
If that was really true –and she figured centaurs could be trusted to an extent– then she would live long enough to see the next war. Her hands closed in tight fists, trying to control the way they were starting to fidget.
Firenze asked them to look for shapes in the smoke of a fire, but it didn't feel like he was actually expecting them to see things. On the contrary, it was more like he was just babysitting a bunch of children he didn't find particularly clever.
Either way, he also mentioned how this technique was sometimes useless for centaurs since they could interpret the signals wrong, so in conclusion, no one should ever fully trust their own minds. Mel got the feeling that he wasn't trying to teach divination, more like rational and individual thinking. Which, in Mel's opinion, was more valuable than any kind of fortune-telling.
"He's not very definite on anything, is he? I mean, I could do with a few more details about this war we're about to have, couldn't you?" Ron whispered.
Mel didn't want to know more. Actually, she'd been comfortable in her ignorance, and she was happy being the popular, nice girl from school. Still, she knew she had responsibilities to attend. Responsibilities that she would have to pay attention to eventually, even if she didn't feel like it. A war she had to fight.
It wasn't just her and her mother now, it was the baby,  Sirius and her uncle Lupin. It was the Weasleys, the Dumbledores, the Longbottoms, Hermione, Erick, Daphne, their classmates, and of course, Harry.
The bell rang and Mel gave a start. Her breathing was erratic, her hands were sweating. She got up hastily and picked up her things in a hurry, but before she could leave, Firenze called her and Harry to stay for a second longer. Ron stood there, unsure of whether he should leave. Firenze noticed this and allowed him to stay, only asking him to close the door.
"You are friends of Hagrid's, are you not?" Their Professor asked them.
"Yes," said Harry.
"Then give him a warning from me. His attempt is not working. He would do better to abandon it."
"His attempt is not working?" Harry frowned.
"And he would do better to abandon it," Firenze nodded. "I would warn Hagrid myself, but I am banished — it would be unwise for me to go too near the forest now — Hagrid has troubles enough, without a centaurs' battle."
"But — what's Hagrid attempting to do?"
"Hagrid has recently rendered me a great service," said Firenze after a moment of contemplative silence. "And he has long since earned my respect for the care he shows all living creatures. I shall not betray his secret. But he must be brought to his senses. The attempt is not working. Tell him. Good day to you."

The First Date Pt 3
The two ate their meal in relative silence- although Mina did see fit to steal one of his sweet potatoes and quickly snatched it up before he could do anything.  He stared at her for a few seconds, completely flabbergasted (which was a hilarious look on him) before he snatched up her umeboshi (since she’d eaten all of her tempura.)  It quickly devolved into the two trying to steal even more of each other’s food and general tomfoolery and laughter after that.  They made sure to pick up anything they dropped or spilled in the chaos, knowing full well that Raios’ mother would thoroughly chew them out if they didn’t.  When the food (and cleanup) was finished, Raios loaded their tableware back on the tray to be taken away later, and the two moved to sit out on the walkway facing the garden.
“So, what comes after this?” Raios asked, half-grumbling.
“Well, I think it generally goes that you propose, I accept, and then we get married and live happily ever after,” Mina replied.
“I didn’t mean our relationship, you idiot!” Raios snapped, his face turning bright red.  “I meant this date!  I’m not exactly a fountain of knowledge when it comes to this!”
“Well-…”  Mina flopped over on her side, laying across Raios’ lap and causing him to panic very briefly, “we could always go to your roo-”
“Rejected,” Raios spat, a cold and angry demeanor taking back over.  “What is with you and my room anyways?  If you try to recommend it one more time, I’m seriously going to smack you.”
“Got it.  Won’t do it again,” she replied, a bit shocked by how genuinely angry he seemed to be at the mere idea of it.  Shocked, but not perturbed.  She’d try again next time.
“Pick something else.”  He still seemed pretty pissed, but his tone had lost a bit of its edge.
“… Isn’t this fine?”
“Huh?”
“Being like this,” she replied, motioning to their position.  “Or did you want to the one using my lap?” she teased.
“Hu- wh- No!  That’s not what I meant at all!” Raios spluttered, cheeks turning dark again. “And this isn’t what I meant! Aren’t people supposed to do things?!”
“This is doing something though,” Mina replied calmly. “And I am plenty satisfied to just stay like this and chat for a few hours.”
“My legs will fall asleep,” Raios complained.
“Then we can switch!  In an hour you can use my lap.”
“Somehow I get the sense that this isn’t exactly what usually happens on a first date.”
“Well yeah,” Mina replied.  “Usually, the boyfriend isn’t grounded.  We made the most of what we could, and it was fine.  I mean, we’re not breaking any records, but I don’t want to set our relationship to the pace of others’.”  Mina made herself comfortable again on his lap and stared up at him, starting yet another staring contest.  She was content to keep going too until Raios eventually sighed and leaned over.  She was so confused about what was going on that she didn’t realize what had happened until the sensation left her lips. She just stared up at him wide-eyed and quietly covered her mouth.  There was a silence and then she raised a finger.  “One more time.”
“Huh?”
“Do it again.  I wasn’t ready.”
“No,” he replied, seeming pretty adamant this time.
“Oh come on!”  She covered her face as she felt her cheeks start to actually physically burn. She kicked her feet against the wood floor and started to roll around in Raios’ lap, trying to remember not to let herself fall.  “Just one more!  Come on, please?!”
“I know you, it definitely won’t be ‘just one more’,” Raios replied flatly.
“You’re so mean!” Mina whined.
“Yup, I’m mean, horrible, awful- feel free to call me all the names you want, you’re not getting another one.”  Mina gave one last futile, dying groan of disappointment and laid flat on Raios’ lap again.
“I didn’t think you’d do it.”
“You underestimated me.”
“Clearly.”  Raios watched, slightly amused, as her face began to turn red again and she quickly tried to re-cover her face.  “Ughhhhh… Let’s just end it here for today. I don’t think I can function after that.”
“You sure?”
“Not at all, but I think I’m going to be completely useless the rest of the day.  Also my self-control just went in the garbage.”
“Huh?!  Your self-control?!” Raios asked.
“I’m gonna die.  I’m legitimately going to die.”
“You’re not gonna die from a kiss,” Raios ground out.
“I am so gonna die.”
“I didn’t realize you were such a drama queen.”
“And I didn’t realize you were such a tease!”
“Well there’s a lot more where that came from,” he replied, grinning smugly.  She looked up at him only to cover her face again.
“Okay, now I’m gonna die.”
“I’m not playing this game.”
“GREAT!  Because I’m already losing!”  Raios just sighed and leaned back while his girlfriend silently freaked out in his lap. “Ugh…  It should be illegal to be that hot…” Mina grumbled to herself.
“I’d be a lot more legal if you took off your rose-tinted glasses.”
“No thanks, I’m happy where they are.”
“You are just-…”  Raios gave a sigh that was somewhere between ‘annoyed’ and ‘exasperated’.
“I believe the word you’re looking for is ‘incorrigible’,” Mina replied cheekily.
“That’s definitely the word I was looking for.”
“Ready to switch yet?”
“We’re not switching,” Raios replied flatly. “You’ll just use it to kiss me.”
“You saw through it…” Mina grumbled, clicking her tongue and crossing her arms in irritation.  “Then at least give me your hand.  That’s the least you can do.”  She huffed and pouted until Raios eventually felt he had no other recourse but to give into her demands.  He sighed and picked one of his hands off the wooden floor and offered it to her. Mina’s demeanor immediately turned from sullen and dour to gleeful and bright.  Her two smaller hands immediately latched on, and her cheek quickly found its way into her palm.
“What in reverse world is so fun about this?” Raios grumbled. Mina’s thought process was completely beyond him most of the time, but he found this sort of behavior especially weird.  It wasn’t like this was the first time.  She’d done stuff like this to flirt with him even before they started going out, but he didn’t really understand this need for closeness she seemed to have.  He understood wanting to hold hands and be close, but hers seemed to border on outright cuddling.  He didn’t mind, but he didn’t quite get it either.  They sat in silence like that for a while; she spent time feeling out the callouses on his fingers and tracing the wrinkled creases of his palm like she was trying to memorize every inch of it.  A while passed like that without speaking, and eventually Mina sat up and chose to latch herself to Raios’ arm instead.  “I’ve been meaning to ask for a bit, but you’re the type that likes cuddling, aren’t you?”
“If I say ‘yes’, can we cuddle?” she asked hopefully.
“Absolutely not,” Raios replied flatly.  “What if one of my family walked by?  We’re in the garden.  At least pretend to have a bit of shame.”
“But if we weren’t somewhere with other people around?” she asked, eyes glinting with mischief.
“…I’d think about it…” he replied quietly.
“Alright!” Mina cheered, pumping her fist.
“I didn’t say ‘yes’!” Raios snapped, a bit flustered.
“It’s just as good,” Mina replied.
They sat there and chatted for a while longer, continuing their game of pushing and pulling every now and then until the sun was halfway to the horizon. Raios looked up and judged that it was probably around 5:00pm.  Mina probably had to get home soon.
“Come on, get up,” Raios said, shrugging the arm that she was still very much latched onto.
“Don’t wanna,” Mina pouted.
“Get up,” Raios ground out.  “I gotta take you home.”
“I thought you were grounded,” Mina replied skeptically.
“You honestly think the old hag would allow me to not walk you home?”
“… Fair point.”  Mina reluctantly released him and stood up to stretch.  “We can work out the details of our next date on the way. I wonder where we should go~”
“Ever the opportunist,” Raios sighed, slowly getting up and working the pins and needles out.  The couple made their way over to the entryway, making sure to stop by the kitchen where Raios’ mother would be.  He popped his head in and got his mother’s attention.  She put down the dish she was using to taste the soup, a little surprised that her son had come to find her.
“What seems to be the problem?”
“I’m taking Mina home,” Raios said.
“You know you can’t leave the house, correct?”
“You would really have me not accompany her to ensure she gets home safely?” Raios growled.  Mina was a force of nature.  No one messed with her if they were trying to have a good and decent day.  But it was the principle of the matter.  Mrs. Minori’s placid face slowly morphed into a sly smile, and she turned back to the soup in front of her.
“If you’re not back in 30 minutes, I’m sending your sister after you.”
“I’ll come right back,” he replied quickly.  That was the last thing he wanted.  His sister would interrogate him the entire way back and drive him insane.  Dinner was already going to be bad enough, he didn’t need it to happen without the distraction of food (and he was sure their parents would conveniently ignore her jabs in an attempt to satiate their own curiosity.)
“D’you get permission?” Mina asked.
“Yup, but I gotta be kinda quick otherwise aneki will be sent for me.  Being alone with her would be the most obnoxious thing in the world.”
“I’m not envious.”
“Must be nice being an only child.”  Mina just shrugged and started slipping her geta on.  Raios quickly followed, suit and the two left to go to her place.
“So, where should we go next time?” Mina asked.
“A date on the mainland is a bit hard since it’d take most of the day to get there,” Raios mused, “but we might be able to get on a ferry to one of the nearby islands that has more to do.”  He looked over to find Mina pouting which completely bewildered him.  “What? Why are you making that face?”
“Those’re fine ‘n all, but I want something quieter,” she grumbled.
“So what, you just wanna hang out on the beach on the quiet side of the island or something?”  Her eyes lit up, and Raios once again came to the conclusion that there was no understanding his girlfriend.  He sighed in resignation.  “I guess that’s what we’ll be doing then.”  Mina clapped her hands and giggled in glee before once again latching onto his arm.  Raios didn’t even bother trying to get her off this time.  If someone saw them, then they saw them.
It didn’t take long to arrive at Mina’s house, even with the awkward way she was hanging off him, and Raios stopped at the door.
“Alright, let go.  It’s time for you to go home.”  Mina grumbled under her breath and stubbornly clung to his sleeve.  “Come on, I’ll see you on Monday.”
“It’s too long…”
“It’s the day after tomorrow!” Raios snapped.
“I wish we could just skip to being married already,” Mina pouted, moving to grip the collar of his yukata.
“That’s gonna be a bit,” Raios replied, feeling a bit sheepish. “We’re not even old enough.”  Mina pouted, feeling disheartened when faced with the truth.  “Quit that. You’re being ridiculous.  At least consider for a moment the idea that you may be happier with someone else.”
“Not happening,” Mina growled at him.  “It’s definitely gotta be you.”  Then, Mina violently tugged on him pulling him downwards and caught him completely off guard.  The one Raios had given her had been soft and fleeting.  One of his many ways of gently telling her he loved her and appreciated her. The kiss Mina gave Raios was longer and firmer, and she didn’t even give him a chance to try and lead it.  When she finally let go of him, he covered his mouth with his arm and stumbled back, a violent blush covering his entire face and creeping down his neck.  Mina was almost sure she saw steam coming out of his ears too.
“YOU-!!”  Mina just flashed him a smug smile and stuck her tongue out at him.
“See you Monday~” Mina said, waving to him as she went inside, feeling like she’d set off a whole warehouse’s worth of fireworks.

Strength in Numbers Part 2
Part two of Strength in Numbers and inspire by @supernaturalimagine prompt of  Imagine losing your hair to chemotherapy and the boys shaving their heads to make you feel better.
Word Count: 2214
Warnings: Cancer, angst
You had no idea it would be like this, this time. Everything hurt. Your body, your mind, your soul...even your dreams hurt at this point. Plagued by nightmares with both memories long forgotten, and memories you wanted to forget. Not even Cas could help you with those, try as he might.
You were right, you wound up in the hospital more often than not; and yet you were wrong. Each time you had to be admitted the boys were there for you. They didn’t get caught. Weren’t even questioned; they were just known as “your boys.” Some of the staff asked how you managed to get all three of them on a leash like that you would always simply say they were a gift from God. If only they knew.
They were truly your rocks throughout this thing. You felt guilty of course: taking them away from hunting all the time, and if either Sam or Dean stayed with you they made sure Cas went with the other along for a hunt. (Turns out Cas, angel of the Lord, was quite the hunter when he put his mind to it.) This meant there could always be someone with you when you went for treatment. Try as you might to be okay, to hide exactly how much pain you were in they were there anyway. Just like they promised they would be.
That didn’t mean you were happy about being stuck in the hospital all the live long fucking day though. You sighed for the thousandth time in about an hour, flipping through the channels again and again trying to find something interesting to watch.
“You know we could always--”
“No, Dean...we’re not watching Doctor Sexy again. Besides it’s just a rerun where Kelsey turns down Trevor because she still thinks he’s not serious about them.” you turned to look at him, smirking, “And that’s just some bullshit I don’t have time for right now.”
He raised his hands in surrender, “Sorrrrry my bad. Just trying to help.”
“Uh huh. I’m sure.” flopping back on your pillow with a groan you shut off the tv. “There’s nothing on.”
“There never is this time of day.”
You stuck out your tongue before you tossed him the remote. He turned the tv back on and immediately switched it to Doctor Sexy M.D. You nearly screamed and only stopped yourself because your nurse came in with another bag.
When she made an offhand comment about how trashy it was you started laughing at Dean’s face. He looked so offended and tried to explain the nuances of said “medical” drama.
“Listen all I’m saying is that it’s hard to watch something like this when all you’re looking at is how they still have earrings when they do open surgery. Or they way they treat the newbies.”
“Yeah but the stories!”
They went back and forth the entire time she was in there, between her doing her duties and taking your vitals and such. You may as well had been a lawn ornament and while it was irritating to be literally spoken over, it was also a relief that his sole focus wasn’t on you for a few minutes. After your round of treatment you were feeling less and less like yourself and you knew it was only a matter of time before you got really bad. Again.
After she left Dean settled back into his chair and grumbled about Nurse-No-Nonsense. You threw your pillow at him and then pouted for him to give it back.
“No way you gave it to me!”
“You would deny a dying woman her own pillow?? What kinda monster are you?” You knew you made a mistake the moment you said it; but seeing Dean sober up in an instant was what really killed you. You hated when he got that look in his eye. The one that screamed how much he was hurting that he couldn’t help you through this. That it wasn’t a monster to kill or a curse to break, it simply...was.
He gave it back, even fluffed it for you and put it behind your head. “You know you can’t play that card all the time...it’s just plain dirty.”
“I know but you love me anyway.”
XXX
You groaned and covered your mirror. You didn’t need it anyway. You no longer wore makeup in any way, shape, or form; and well...you finally went bald again. You were actually surprised it hung on as long as it did this time around. Last time it was only a matter of weeks before it completely fell out and left you with an impressive hat collection. It took longer this time and you didn’t know whether that meant your body was stronger than last time...or if the treatment wasn’t working as planned. Either way, you hated it. You hated knowing that you look as sick as you felt. That anyone who looked at you would see your bald head and instantly know that you had this disease for which there was no cure. You put on a hat and left your room without a glance in the mirror’s direction.
As you approached the library you heard voices, not unusual considering the boys were staying home more and more but the fact they were hushed made you suspicious and self-conscious.
You heard Sam’s voice first “Come on, Dean...I know she hasn’t exactly been herself lately but don’t you think this is taking it a bit far?” Okay...so whatever it was that’s going on it definitely had to do with you. Great.
“Dude, if you saw how she’s really been,” you winced, wondering how much he had seen without you meaning to and how bad it really was in his eyes, “you wouldn’t be asking this.”
“Okay but this? Man, I know she’s bad but this is extreme.”
“It’s really not. Okay so just sit down and shut up about it.”
You walked in, trying to make it seem like you were totally just strolling in without any knowledge of what they were just talking about. Considering the glances they kept throwing your way you doubted your success. But you went along your business anyway and didn’t comment on it and neither did they.
“Nice hat, yn/n.” Sam gave you a smile and you felt your face flush not knowing if he were sincere or trying to make you feel better.
“Thanks...it’s been hanging in the back of the closet but I figured it was time to break it out, you know?”
“Uh, yeah, yeah I know it is. Sometimes changing it up means beginning back the old.”
You glanced at Dean to see if he were going to add anything to this, maybe a hint of what the fuck they were discussing earlier. His gaze however was glued to the book in front of him. You smiled at Sam, “Exactly.”
Once you were done in there you went to the kitchen, their whispers continuing almost as soon as you were out of their line of sight.
XXX
You were so...anxious. All the time. You knew the brothers were planning something you just didn’t know what. You didn’t know if it were good or bad and honestly your mind kept going back to the start of all this. You told them you wanted to keep your distance during all this and now that they’ve seen you during treatment you were worried that they would take you up on that offer. That they thought you were a burden. Too hard to take care of, too much effort, too much patience, and way too many rules about how to help care for you. You were sure it was only a matter of time until they realized it would be better for everyone for you to go live somewhere for people like you.
You hadn’t seen them all day and you wanted to make sure they knew your appointment had been changed. That you knew it was yet another thing they had to deal with and that you were sorry and could find another way to get there if needed. It’d been a while since you’d seen Cas anyway so maybe he could take you if they couldn’t.
You wandered the halls, calling out their names, “Come on, guys, this isn’t funny!”
“Alright!” Dean shouted and you followed his voice. “Alright, eager beaver. Can’t give us two more minutes can ya?”
“Two minutes for what--” you gasped at the sight in front of you.
Sam turned to you, wiping off his newly shaved head. “Well? What do you think? Think we actually pull it off.”
He...was bald. So was Dean. They were both bald… not a hair on their heads. And, yeah sure they looked good but that was not the point the point was that they were bald!
Dean smirked, “Aw look at that she’s speechless. Okay hon, tell us how you really think we look. Lay it on us.”
You just continued to stare. Lips parted, eyes more than likely bugging out of your also bald head...you legitimately couldn’t think of anything to say. You did however, burst into tears.
The reaction was clearly not one that they were expecting because the brothers were frozen in place while you cried. Sam finally reacted first by backhanding Dean in the shoulder.
“I so fucking told you.” he walked over to you while Dean remained in his place. Sam hugged you and in his embrace you cried harder.
“Shit,,,shit y/n it was not supposed to be like this. We just wanted..well...we uh…Shit sweetheart I’m sorry.” hearing Dean stumble over his words like that, hearing the wobble in his voice, the uncertainty...it was too much. This whole thing was too much.
You shook your head, “Don’t...please don’t be sorry. Don’t take this back…” you sniffled and tried to pull away from Sam before he ended up as your snot rag but just like the other times you’ve broken down in his arms he didn’t let you go. You turned your head to look at Dean. You saw how confused he looked and you nearly started crying again.
“Dude, you need to stop whatever it is you’re doing because she’s about to hyperventilate over here.” you didn’t really know what the point of Sam’s stage whisper was, you were being held by him so it wasn’t like you were not going to hear him.
“I’m not doing anything!”
“Then maybe stop doing that!”
You shook your head, “Oh my god, you both need to stop!” They looked to you and you wiped your eyes, sniffling but able to string more than a few coherent noises. “Don’t be sorry...this, I can’t even begin to say how much this means to me. This is so...so utterly ridiculous and amazing and I just...I can’t believe it.”
Sam chuckled, and it was a better feeling that you’ve had in a long while. “So...you don’t hate it?”
You looked between them and actually laughed. You laughed like you hadn’t since the diagnosis. Reaching up to pet Sam’s newly shaved head you grinned and shook your own. “Sam, you finally let Dean use the clippers on you...how can I hate it?”
He snorted and finally released you from his grip, “Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. You know once you start growing your hair back I am too.”
You smiled, “I know and I can’t wait for that day.” you kissed his cheek “Thank you...this really means a lot.”
“You know we’d do just about anything for you. The fact this made you smile? Worth it.” he nodded to Dean, who then nodded back as Sam headed out. “I’m totally stealing your hats though!”
“You wouldn’t dare!” chuckling softly, you turned your attention to Dean. “So...about the, you know, five minutes ago.”
“You mean where you looked like you had a mental breakdown and I was the biggest douche on the planet?”
“Yeah that.” you went over to him. “I’m sorry I just, like I said this was so unexpected. No one’s ever done something like this for me before. No one cared enough to do something like this.”
“Like Sammy said, we’d do anything for you, Y/n/n.”
“Maybe but it wasn’t Sam convincing you to do it now was it? In the library the other day, that’s what you were talking about, right? Yeah, I heard. A little bit. I just...I can’t--”
“--believe it yeah I’ve heard. Is it that hard to think your family cares about you?”
You lightly scoffed. “Wow that is so, we’re not going to go there since I could very much ask you the same question.” you hugged him, tightly, like it would be the last one you give. “I’m trying to say thank you, you dope.”
When he hugged you back, for a moment you thought he was going to knock the wind out of you. However tightly you were embracing him had nothing on how tight he was, you. You didn’t even think about complaining. You relaxed in his embrace.
“We’d do anything for you.”
“I know, Dean...I know.”

[Fic] “Between the Saltwater and the Sea-Strand” - Naruto
Summary: Yukiko and Kakashi run an undercover mission in the coastal port of Asase during monsoon season. Rain can make anyone philosophical. Part of the Apartment Manager AU, set after The Guardian in Spite of Herself and before An Unorthodox Pedagogical Approach. (3,515 words) Note: Written for warriordrgnmage, in response to the prompt: Naruto: Hatake Kakashi/Ayakawa Yukiko set in the Way of the Apartment Manager Series Timeline. For the Bingo card: Monsoon. It is also a fill for the genprompt_bingo square monsoon. For obvious reasons, Yukiko and Kakashi are using fake names while undercover. Yukiko is Aoi, and Kakashi is Hyoujin. Also, you may notice that this is gen! See, while I am perfectly cool with people shipping Yukiko with Kakashi, that is 100% never going to become Apartment Manager canon, for many, many reasons. If anyone wants a shippy AU, you are welcome to write it yourself, because I flat-out CANNOT. Seriously, even if I tried, you wouldn't want the results. They would be awful. Trust me on that. --------------------------------------------- Between the Saltwater and the Sea-Strand --------------------------------------------- Kuwa Natsume looked up as Yukiko slung herself in through the office window in a spray of rain, raised one eyebrow, and then looked back down to her account books. "Misplaced your shadow?" "Does anyone have a shadow in this weather?" Yukiko said wryly as she shut the window, reducing the sound of rain from deafening to merely incessant and inescapable. "I thought I was used to rain, but coastal monsoons are something new, yeah?" "We get that a lot from inlanders," Kuwa-san said as she drew a sharp line under a column of numbers and wrote a sum. "You get used to it, and it's easier for shinobi -- you have all that fancy ninpou and whatnot. But in all honesty, Aoi-san, where is your partner? I can't finalize your supply contract without both of your signatures." Yukiko made a face as she combed water out of her black-dyed hair. "Is it that important to be fussy when this is all ninety percent illegal anyway?"
"The more illegal, the more important to nail down all the details," Kuwa-san said. "What court would adjudicate the case if you sign alone and Hyoujin-san decides next week that he won't pay for his share?" Yukiko personally agreed with Kuwa-san's caution, but her cover persona would probably make one further push. So, "Oh, don't worry about him. Hyoujin trusts me completely--" Kuwa-san raised her eyebrow again. "--nearly completely when it comes to contracts. What's the point of having a partner if you can't split your responsibilities?" "I would say partners split focus, not responsibility. If you don't maintain some degree of joint liability, what's to stop one of you from turning on the other?" "Ethics?" Yukiko said with a winning smile, and allowed herself to laugh at Kuwa-san's carefully calculated answering smirk. "Fair enough. Let me look over the terms and I'll drag him over here to pretend he knows how to use a brush sometime before-- when do you close today?" "Six." "Before six. Actually, let's say before five, yeah? He's not that hard to track or sweet-talk if you know what you're doing." Yukiko held out her now-dry hand for the supply contract and wiggled her fingers until Kuwa-san passed it across her desk. She retreated to the broad windowsill and began flicking through the pages. It wasn't complicated, just a dead drop of miscellaneous dry goods in neutral territory that would hopefully establish her and Kakashi as reliable clients and Kuwa-san as a reliable supplier -- a standard way for missing-nin and gray market merchants to feel each other out. If the goods wound up as a cache for a long-term Leaf-nin mission, well, nothing in the contract specified that Yukiko and Kakashi had to be the ones to make the pickup. And their cash was perfectly legitimate Fire Country tender, so as far as Kuwa-san was concerned, there was nothing to worry about. (Yukiko was fairly certain there was nothing to worry about on Konoha's end of the bargain either. Kuwa-san had a rock-solid reputation for following through on her contracts. Nobody survived twenty years in the gray market without either keeping their word almost religiously or spending a fortune on bodyguards, and Kuwa-san barely bothered to pay for warehouse security.) "Where do you source kunai?" she asked as the rain's intensity kicked up a notch, beating against the windowpane in a nearly solid sheet of water. "Wind Country," Kuwa-san said without looking up from her accounts. "Earth Country's metallurgy is better, but the border tariffs aren't usually worth the slight increase in quality. I could change that if you're willing to pay the difference." Yukiko feigned consideration. "I don't care, but Hyoujin can get picky about steel composition. What would the increase be for this number of kunai and senbon?" Kuwa-san named a figure. Yukiko made an exaggerated expression of disgust. "No thanks! He can whine and make do. I'm not paying that much more for what, a half percent less chance of flaws? It's not like anyone expects kunai to last anyway. Use 'em and lose 'em and buy some more, that's what I say. Or steal whatever's left from your targets! That's economy, yeah?" "Officially, I can't encourage any behavior that would reduce my chance to sell you more equipment, Aoi-san. Unofficially? Yes, that's very economical. If only all my clients were equally practical." "Eh, there's all kinds of ways to be practical. What we're good at is mostly spying and killing -- it's more efficient to hire a ninja than do that stuff in-house, yeah? Just like you're good at moving stuff around to where we need it, so it's more efficient to hire you instead of us trying to figure all that stuff out from scratch. It's win-win, is how I see it." Yukiko tapped the papers to shuffle them into a neat pile, then handed them back to Kuwa-san. "That looks fine on my ends. Me and Hyoujin will be back sometime this afternoon to sign and pay the next installment." "It's a pleasure doing business with you, Aoi-san," Kuwa-san said. Yukiko grinned and dove backward out the window, into the pounding rain. --------------- Kakashi was lurking in one of Asase's numerous quayside bars, most of which were run out of the back doors of warehouses and also did a brisk side business in assorted seafood dishes. Rain pelted down on the roof tiles in a clattering racket that Yukiko found personally soothing but professionally irritating -- it was a lot harder to eavesdrop through the constant noise, not to mention the complications it added to genjutsu. She and Kakashi had spent their first night in Asase mutually grousing about the unpredictability of electric ninjutsu in waterlogged conditions and the difficulty of filtering ambient sounds out of illusions. Today Kakashi was sipping a bowl of lobster broth through a long, curved straw that vanished into the deep blue folds of the scarf he'd used to shroud his face. To the casual eye he was staring out an open window toward the rainswept harbor, his oversized gray hood restricting his range of sight and hearing, but Yukiko followed the combined angle of his feet and chopsticks to their targets: a trio of young missing-nin drinking in the far corner, defaced forehead protectors proclaiming their renunciation of Kiri. They were small-time, only a few months out on their own each with barely a name and one line of description in the latest bingo book editions, but anyone willing to go against the Bloody Mist was worth a second look. Whether this particular investigation would conclude in a job offer or an assassination was still up in the air. "Heya, Hyoujin. Thinking of roping in some new blood for larger contracts?" Yukiko asked as she dropped into a seat across from him (back to their targets) and set her ramen down on the unsanded wood of the table. Kakashi shrugged. "Maybe, maybe not. Three's better than two for flexibility, but more than four on a mission gets awkward without ranks and a chain of command. Nobody who leaves a village wants to go back to those kind of restrictions." Yukiko tilted her hand. "Eh, there's assholes on power trips and there's division of labor -- not necessarily the same thing. I let you take the lead in a fight and you let me take the lead on retrievals. That's just practical, yeah? But we wouldn't throw each other away. Shinobi are tools, sure, but if you don't look out for your teammates, how can you trust they'll look out for you?" Kakashi shrugged again and continued sipping his broth. Targets hear? Yukiko signed under the guise of snapping apart her chopsticks. Yes, Kakashi signed back as he lifted his bowl and drank the last of his broth under the shadow of his hood and scarf. No bite. Yukiko slurped a mouthful of noodles and nicely salted broth. "Grouch. Well, whatever we do for future contracts, today we have to sign off on the supply contract with Kuwa-san. We'll need the goods for that thing in Tea Country and she wants both of our names in writing." "Sign for me," Kakashi said "Tried that. She won't bite." "So fake it. Illusions are your thing, Aoi; pretend I'm there and forge my seal." Yukiko slurped another mouthful of noodles in her best imitation of Naruto's sloppy manners. "Oh, sure. Lying is the best way to establish trust for future contracts, yeah?" "She's a civilian, how would she know?" "Not the point. C'mon, Hyoujin. You won't melt in the rain. Let's go make nice with Kuwa-san and I'll make it real worth your while." She ran the edge of her sandal up the side of Kakashi's shin and gave him her best imitation of her cousin Yura's flirtatious smile. Kakashi twitched. Yukiko slapped the table and let her smile shade into a more genuine grin. "Ha, I win." "Fine. Finish your soup and let's go drown ourselves. Again." "Eh, getting soaked's not that bad. Especially when you've got a partner around to help you peel out of all your soggy clothes and warm up when you get home, yeah?" Kakashi twitched again, then rallied and let a tiny arc of electricity jump between two raised fingers. "And then get wet again?" Yukiko held onto her cover persona by the skin of her teeth. "Now you're talking my language. All right, I'm done. Let's go give a little now so we get more back later." --------------- Signing the contract with Kuwa-san took all of twenty minutes -- half of which was entirely for show, as Kakashi lived up to his cover persona and whined about the kunai quality until Yukiko overruled him -- after which they had the afternoon and evening entirely to themselves and a conveniently established reason to retreat to their rented room and lock themselves inside Yukiko's best privacy genjutsu. "We can't stay longer than another day now that the contract's signed," Kakashi said as he flashed his hands through the seals for a quick and subtle bit of ninjutsu that left their clothes and skin completely dry without spilling any excess heat. "Do you think the targets will be receptive if we approach them openly?" Yukiko shook her head, grimaced at the awkward motion of her still-tangled hair, and began working the tie out of her ponytail. "No chance. I don't know if they'd even be open to a joint mission with Aoi and Hyoujin at this point. Sumire wants security and Kenichi likes profit, but they're still raw enough to see tigers in every other shadow, and Eriko's almost too paranoid to make deals with someone as solid and non-threatening as Kuwa-san. On the bright side, they're wildly unlikely to join up with anyone else." Kakashi slumped back onto the futon with an annoyed set to his eyebrow. "And since they haven't moved against Fire Country assets, there's nothing to justify an assassination without a contract. I hate leaving loose ends." Yukiko dropped down to sit cross-legged beside him, fingers slowly working through her tangles. "Think of it as a guaranteed vacation in a few months. Our agents will send word the next time our trio pass through Asase, Aoi and Hyoujin turn up to sign a new contract with Kuwa-san, and we sound them out for a joint mission. They ought to be the right balance of calmer and hungrier by then, and we'll get a better reading after a week or so of close contact." "Ugh." "Yeah, yeah, talking to people is terrible and scary." Kakashi rolled over onto his stomach and buried his face in his arms, the soft, voluminous fabric of his hood blocking all apparent lines of sight. "Only the living." Yukiko froze, then sighed and flopped onto her back with her arms above her head. "Yeah. The dead talk back just as much, but it's still so much easier." "Sometimes I wonder how many people in Konoha would qualify for a 'Lone Survivor of My Genin Team, Including My Teacher' club," Kakashi said into the futon. "Then I stop wondering because the math is too depressing. But we could start a private chapter just for us." "Sometimes I hate that you trust me enough to say things like that," Yukiko said to the ceiling. "Then I tell myself not to be an idiot, because it means I get to say equally horrible things to you. Like that I'm pretty sure if we recruit our targets, at least one of them will be dead within two years, and I'm not sure that balances the odds that all three of them will die within one year if they keep working as missing-nin. After all, there's always a chance they might retire and start a farm." "Says the woman who got so bored with civilian life she jumped into a chuunin exam the minute Sandaime offered her a chance." "Says the Anbu assassin." Kakashi snorted. "We're all so fucked up." "Yeah." "Might as well be fucked up with other people who understand." "Yeah." They lay in silence for some time, listening to the steady thrum of rain on the roof tiles above. The air was warm and sticky, and the breeze eeling through the open window smelled faintly green beneath the ever-present fish-salt-rot odor of the sea. "Let's accidentally-on-purpose bump into the targets tomorrow morning, buy them breakfast, and float the idea of a joint mission later in the year," Yukiko said eventually. "Might as well plant seeds when the ground is soft." "You pay." "It's all mission funds in the end." "To clarify: you handle all the human interactions. I'll stand behind you and look vaguely menacing so they'll think at least one of us is competent." "To clarify: you'll look vaguely constipated, while I impress them with my social competency. Networking is an important skill for missing-nin." "I object to that assessment." "Which one of us has experience making business deals directly with civilians instead of through the mission office?" Kakashi flicked a gust of wind at her, re-tangling her hair. Yukiko pulled out Aoi's grin as she kicked Kakashi gently in the ankle. "Ninjutsu isn't a valid argument, which means I win. Your forfeit is fixing my hair." "Having teammates and friends is a terrible choice and I should never have made it a second time," Kakashi grumbled, but he sat up and tapped Yukiko's shoulder. "Turn around and hand me your comb." --------------- They hadn't been able to slap any chakra tags on the targets -- Eriko's paranoia was too thorough for even the subtlest of genjutsu threads to make it past her guard longer than a couple hours -- but Yukiko had gotten a decent sense of their chakra signatures over a series of not-quite-encounters during the past week. It helped to have rooms in the same lodging house, of course. Kakashi took first watch, leaving Yukiko to spend the back half of the night with a manual on steam heating systems and the interminable patter of rain. Eventually the sky began to lighten from matte black to flat gray and her spider-light sweep across the building and surrounding streets caught movement from their targets. "Time to go," she said as she stood. Kakashi remained unmoving until she nudged him with her foot, secure that he was actually awake and wouldn't strike her in reflexive defense. "I remember pretending to be a morning person when I was too young to know better," Kakashi grumbled into the futon. "It was a terrible idea then and it's a terrible idea now. Nobody should be awake before the sun is halfway up the sky." "Unfortunately the targets set the schedule," Yukiko said as she tucked her book away into a holding scroll. "Come on, put on your face and let's get to work." Kakashi flicked a minor wind jutsu in her direction as he rolled to his feet, but Yukiko had braided her hair so this time it stayed secure and untangled. "I wonder if I should switch to bulky scarves as an off-duty option. It's easier to eat and drink through the gaps between layers than to yank a mask up and down very fast or while people are looking away, and people have been much less interested in Hyoujin's face than they tend to be in mine." "That's because Hyoujin doesn't have a reputation. There's no glory in pulling down some random missing-nin's scarf." Yukiko grinned at Kakashi's affronted eyebrow and slipped out the window ahead of another wind jutsu. It wasn't hard to find their targets today: apparently Sumire's morning grumpiness had won over Eriko's paranoia and the trio of former Mist-nin were huddled near a breakfast yatai, half-sheltered from the incessant rain, and haggling over prices with the male half of the married couple behind the counter. Yukiko couldn't have asked for a better opening if she'd tried. She eeled her way up to the counter and grinned at the woman scraping down the stove from whatever she'd last been grilling. "Two miso and two fish on rice -- salmon for me, mackerel for my partner," she said, jerking her thumb over her shoulder at Kakashi, who was standing, smugly dry, under a wind jutsu shaped into an invisible umbrella. "Oh, and how much extra for nori with the salmon?" The woman named a price. Yukiko rolled her eyes. "I hate bargaining on an empty stomach, so I'll just pay nine tenths of that and we'll all pretend you're not robbing me blind, yeah?" She glanced sideways to where the three young missing-nin were still arguing with the other cook. "I hate listening to arguments on an empty stomach, too, so how about I cover these loudmouths, too? Or at least the difference between what they're willing to pay and what you're asking." "Deal," the man said, interrupting the mockery of persuasion Kenichi was currently attempting. "Pay up and thank the nice lady for making sure I don't turn you away unfed." Eriko slapped her hand over Sumire's wallet. "No. It's poisoned." Yukiko rolled her eyes again. "There's a difference between reasonable caution and paranoia, yeah? I want a peaceful breakfast and our last mission went well, so I'm willing to pay a little extra to smooth things over. It's not like it's that much money. And hey, if it'll make you feel better, consider it a-- a-- Hyoujin, what's the word I want?" "Why would I know? You handle contracts," Kakashi said as he slipped a bite of mackerel through the folds of his scarf. "Ugh, why are we still partners?" "Because I'm very good with knives." "Point!" Yukiko slapped the yatai counter and turned back to the trio of missing-nin. "Anyway, breakfast. You're right that nothing comes free, so let's say that I'm paying for you to consider a joint mission sometime in the future, if me and Hyoujin have a line on a job that needs more than three people and we're kicking around the same market, yeah?" Sumire blinked. Kenichi looked like she'd slapped his face with a whole salmon. Eriko scowled and said, "That's not how contracts work." "Yes it is. It's called a-- a-- it's an option, that's the word! You can ask any of the suppliers in town, they'll tell you. I'm paying for the chance to run a job past you, because anyone who makes it out of Hidden Mist is worth a trial run, yeah? You don't have to accept. You just have to listen. And now I'm done with this conversation because I don't like having arguments on an empty stomach any more than I like listening to them. Don't die, and me and Hyoujin will see you around." She grabbed her rice bowl, her cup of miso, and her disposable bamboo chopsticks and kicked Kakashi's ankle to make him turn around and stop staring creepily at the trio of missing-nin through the folds of his scarf. Bite? she asked in handsign masked by a low-level illusion -- the chakra for which ought to be covered by Kakashi's own completely explicable umbrella jutsu. Maybe, Kakashi signed back, then added aloud, "What do you want to do for our next vacation, if this job goes as well as the last one?" Yukiko shrugged elaborately as she swallowed a mouthful of fish and rice. "Eh, there's worse places than the ocean. And by then, the rain should be over for the year. I like water a lot better when it stays flat on the ground than when it's trying to crawl up my nose and into my ears, yeah?" "That's because you have no imagination," Kakashi drawled. Yukiko considered countering with her own innuendo, but no; they were leaving Asase. They could leave Aoi and Hyoujin behind with the rain and introspection and return to more familiar ground. So she poked Kakashi with her chopsticks instead, and laughed when he neatly dodged the strike. As they walked past Kuwa-san's warehouse, bickering companionably, a watery ray of sun pierced briefly through the clouds over the storm-wracked sea and laid a path west to the green reaches of home. --------------------------------------------- End of Story --------------------------------------------- Well, that took significantly longer than it needed to, but I won in the end. \o/ Also, Kuwa Natsume (from Whose Allegiance Is Ruled by Expedience) is now officially part of Apartment Manager continuity. You're welcome. :D

A/N: damn you really making my heart go monika huh??? ily sm you’re so nice i- 🥺🥺💖💖 i’m all emo now brb gonna cry
————🌷————
To Date Banri Settsu:
- You mean trash man? (I’m so sorry I’m a Juza stan-)
- You guys started dating after you rejected him at least 4 times.
- And I mean reject him, no small giggles like “uwu maybe~” I’m talking; “Lmao no eat a dick”
- He’ll 100% come off as an arrogant little shit who thinks he’s the best thing ever and totally reminds you how lucky you are you’re dating him.
- (Totally says it to discredit the fact he’s head over heels for you, he would absolutely beat anyone up for you if you asked but that’s for another troupe).
- Dating Banri would lowkey be the best and worst thing ever;
- He can be extremely thoughtful and nice, he obviously cares about you to death...
- But you’re also going to be having to babysit him,,, like… literal babysitting.
- You’ll have to get used to having a backpack filled with snacks and first-aid kits, have your phone filled with games for him too.
- This boy does not know how to NOT get into fights, especially when you’re around or when the challenger somehow shoves you into the fight (catcalling, bothering you, etc).
- He has such a short temper it’s legitimately annoying to deal with him outside of the dorm because there Sakyo or Izumi keep him in check.
- He’ll win, the only person who can beat his ass is Juza, but that doesn’t mean he won’t get hurt. He’s strong not made out of iron.
- Get ready to sit him down on a park bench while he eats a popsicle you bought him so he’d shut up while you patch him up.
- “Come on, he had it coming plus I beat his ass real nice-! Aw, shit [Name] stop rubbing the cut so much! You tryin’ to patch me up or kill me?”
- You know how he and Itaru are basically shut in gamer boys? Now you’ve got to deal with Banri and his stinky smelling ass when he shuts himself off playing video games.
- Get ready to get Sakyo and Omi to drag his ass to get a shower.
- You bet your ass he will make you wash his hair, but in return you make him wear boxers with some floaters and now he feels like a toddler.
- Bonus points if you fill up the tub with bubbles and kid toys, that’ll make him extra embarrassed and you bet your ass Tenma and Juza will pay you to let them in.
- “I’m 17, [Name], you don’t have to treat me like a kid!”
- “Maybe stop acting like one??”
- “Can’t believe you’re dating your babysitter Settsu.”
- “Hyodo shut the fuck up before I throw Mr. Duck at you!”
- Juza and you will eventually bond and become best friends, much to Settsu’s distaste, probably over having to deal with his bullshit.
- He’s his roommate and you’re his girlfriend; you’re both basically babysitters (that is until Juza and Banri start fighting and now you’re dealing with two 4 year olds going at it).
- Your relationship is actually a secret to people at both schools you guys attend to; hell, even your family doesn’t know.
- He is known as a delinquent after all…
- You kind of forget that, since he acts so nice and sweet with you; it’s sometimes shocking hearing rumors of your boyfriend almost hospitalizing someone.
- You guys had dinner at your place so he’d meet your parents, classic bad boy meets s/o’s parents for the first time;
- It actually went surprisingly bad at first, he couldn’t stop looking kind of scary and he had a hard time getting along with your folks but eventually you made it out alive and with arrangements for teatime next weekend.
- Would 100% expect you to watch him practice solely for you to praise him over Juza (one time you didn’t and actually congratulated Juza and he went into a whole ass rant that only stopped after you kissed him and dragged him by his hair).
- (Oh please bully his haircut for me! He looks like a mushroom, a stinky geasy mushroom.)
- Everyday activities are now couple activities; especially gaming.
- Washing dishes? It’s a completion and whoever wins chooses the movie you’ll watch later. Helping him do the laundry? Whoever finishes first gets to eat the biggest piece of the desserts Omi made.
- You play multiplayer online games and join his guild and now that’s all you do on weekdays. Except you actually shower, he doesn’t. Disgusting pig.
- You actually spend a lot of time in his room with Juza, and Juza actually enjoys having you over, and even if in the surface he’s annoyed as hell that he steals you away sometimes he’s also realized that you can act as a mediator for their fights and get along with his members.
- “For once Settsu isn’t such a damn bother…”
- You two sleep in the same bed and Juza always keeps in check you don’t act out.
- He doesn’t want to wake up to anything weird, capiche?
- Banri truly does his best to make you happy and you do too, and that’s kind of all he needs in life. Especially since he’s still young, barely 17 with a delinquent image, people forget he’s also human and that he loves and needs love.
- Even if it’s hard sometimes, especially since he’s always claiming to live life in ultra-easy mode; he truly does love you a lot.
- And he reminds you everyday however he can; texts, calls, and dates.
- Sending you flowers, cards; he’s so cheesy sometimes it’s shocking such sweet things come out of such a rough looking fellow.
- He loves taking you out on mall-dates and walks on the park (don’t tell anyone he’s soft like that, he will tickle you until your cry), and his favorite; arcade dates where he’ll be banned because he wins you everything.
-You have to take a 45 minute bus ride to the mall because he’s banned for life because he wins everything, they’ve had to shut down stalls because he got you everything.
- Sure he’s a pain in the ass most of the time, but he’s never bored with you.
- For some reason, he’s more than happy to go into ultra-hard mode for you.
