It’s a fact: Kathy Acker often wrote while masturbating. And she encouraged her students at San Francisco Art Institute to do the same. Jason McBride noted this at Poetic Research Bureau (PRB) for the paperback launch of his monumental biography Eat Your Mind: The Radical Life and Work of Kathy Acker. The practice was one way the genre-smashing Acker soaked her novels in the emotional ups and downs of eros. At this ceremonial event, Matias Viegener—writer, author, teacher, friend of Acker, and executor of her will (she died in 1997 at age 50)—donated her legendary desk and chair to the PRB archives. It dramatically backdropped McBride’s talk. (Books for this event provided by Stories Books & Café.)

The Descent of Autofiction … and the Rise of the Literary Thrill-Seeking Industrial Complex
The Descent of Autofiction … and the Rise of the Literary Thrill-Seeking Industrial Complex
February 4, 2022 • By Jack Skelley AUTOFICTION IS A fiction. It does not exist. More specifically, defined as a form of literature in which a first-person narrator may or may not represent the author, autofiction excludes next to nothing but genre fiction — e.g., crime stories, fantasy. If it’s everything, it’s nothing. Just ask Chris Kraus. The co-publisher and editor (with Hedi El Kholti and…

[I]f intimacy abates, new narrative booms. Its dissociative forms and themes — the anxiety/bliss of romance/sex, psychic roleplay, identity-in-ideology, dream states, trauma, more sex — now serve a community of passion addicts, haunted memoirists, and mental thrill-riders hungering for a higher high….

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts 1 and 2″ shows #809, #810
Tumblr media
In the spirit of keeping the secrets but enticing you, the reader, to see Jack Thorne’s superb play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, I shall keep my review brief and to the point. This is a play that is absolutely magical, that absolutely lives up to the expectations of those who are among the fandom that J.K. Rowling’s series has garnered, and that is absolutely worthy of your time and money.
The play picks up where the books left off, and Harry Potter has now sent his son, Albus, to Hogwarts. On the way, Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius, is also on the train, and the two become not just schoolmates en route to the school of wizardry, but become tight friends. Benjamin Papac is an energetically gifted Albus, exuding the wonder and passion for doing the right thing while dealing with teenage angst, much like his father Harry did in the book series. Jon Steiger is a phenomenal Scorpius, balancing the humor with the physical demands and friendship arc he shares with Albus nicely. John Skelley’s marathon performance as Harry Potter is an exhausting watch but oh-so-satisfying to see throughout the two part engagement. The vocal, physical, and magical demands on this role supersede expectation, and Mr. Skelley delivers all the mystical goods with aplomb.
Lucas Hall is a standout as Draco, developing the oft-interpreted villain from the books as a father who simply wants the best for his son, and wants the best for the wizardry world. Mr. Hall shares a sublime moment opposite Mr. Skelley when discussing the drearies of being a Malfoy, and it is an acting moment of brilliant vulnerability and pace. Lauren Zarkin does well as the final piece of the young trio, Polly, having some dominating moments as the female figure of Albus and Scorpius’ mission while delivering some classical interpretations of the modern character.
Featured performers Brittany Zeinstra, Andrew Long, and Charles Janasz (all of whom will not be named by character as to avoid plot spoilers) take on some of the books’ most beloved and most memorable characters, and their delivery, choices, and vocal cadences match what audiences expect, as they are exceptional in the scenes they get to shine in.
John Tiffany’s direction is purely perfect for the amount of illusions and magic Jamie Harrison has designed for the play. Mr. Tiffany’s knack for knowing how to draw focus, how to slow down the action, and when to let the laugh play allows the audience to dread each act’s curtain, for they don’t want it to end. Mr. Thorne’s script is a legit theatrical script, possessing engaging dialogue and an enthralling plot, allowing Imogen Heap’s music composition and arrangements to take hold of the mood in each scene and transition. Steven Hoggett’s movement direction of transitions and the non-speaking time jump turns are simple, delicate, and beautiful while never letting the story waver.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a two-part play that someone like me, a self-described appreciator of the books, enjoys as a piece of theatre and Harry Potter adaptation. It’s a play that a dedicated fan such as my wife enjoys as a balance between theatrical legitimacy and honoring of the books and film adaptations. It is a play that a die-hard Harry Potter head who is still waiting for his letter to Hogwarts such as my thespian friend Gary is tearing up at multiple points absolutely loves. So, here’s my call to all you Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws, Gryffindors, and Slytherins: go support your house at the Curran Theatre before it’s too late!

P101 HC Series: Start!
(Here’s the start of my HC series I’m hoping to do/keep on regarding my Pirate101 captain's. (Been wanting to do this for a while...) Before I start with my youngest pirate captain, here’s a note: These will include my group of pirate captain ocs. Key for the naming thing: ‘Title’ First name Last Name (class; age at the start of Pirate101’s story) (BTW, in my head, the whole Armada/Kane arc takes about 2 ½ to 3 years to complete so when/if I mention after Armada war things, just add 2 years to the character’s given age) Their names are ‘Nimble’ Emily Richardson (main; swashbuckler; was 16 y/o), ‘Daring’ Hope Nightingale (musketeer; 14 y/o), ‘Silent’ Alicia Stevenson (Privateer; 18 y/o), ‘Crafty’ Sophia Laverne (Witchdoctor; 19 y/o), and ‘Crafty’ Max Mainstay (Buccaneer; 17 y/o). Also note that I might not know every canon thing about the companion backstories in the game because of my terrible memory, so these might be canon-divergent. Also note that universal characters (like Ratty, Kitty, and Skelley) are on Emily’s crew but all others are on their other respective crews (with other ocs probably being on Alicia’s crew cause she’s a privateer and all))
(Now that that is over, here’s Hope!)
--All of the starter companions are protective of their captain, no matter if they are the first mate or not.
--Yes, even Wing Chun.
--Speaking of, he’s very blunt and rude because he grew up not learning how to filter things. He still does care a lot about his captain, Hope. You touch her and you’ll be getting a bird beak in your face.
--So Louis is on Hope’s crew and she once said she loved skyfish, any and all types. So after long days of either running from the armada or just a rough day in general, he fishes with his harpoon gun to get the biggest fish he finds and Lucky Jack cooks it up. It always cheers the girl up.
--In all honesty, Hope doesn’t act like a captain often. Everyone on the ship, including her, sees Jack as the captain and her the first mate, but he insisted she be the captain because of her parents.
--She was born in Marleybone and lived there most of her life. Her parents were a part of the Royal Navy until they took a mission to hunt down some hidden smuggled goods and never came back. Jack had stayed back to watch the young Hope and sailed her to Skull Island when Armada soldiers became interested in the daughter of the Famous Nightingale Royal Navy Captains.
--Despite her young age, she is an excellent shot. Give her any type of gun and in a matter of a few shots she will be able to hit a glass bottle from almost any distance. Jack says she got it from her parents, who both favored guns.
