The Sopranos notes to self

This is a thing I do sometimes when I watch a really good show. Just some questions and themes to keep in mind when I inevitably rewatch The Sopranos. I may add to this if other ideas come to me.

Inflection points–when people had a real chance to make the right choice

Moments when characters actually do the right thing, or at least right-ish

Try to make sense of The Blue Comet (Melfi’s exit) and Kennedy and Heidi (Christopher’s death), both of which I found jarring (for very different reasons)

Character pairs to compare and contrast: Tony/Chris, Tony/Meadow, Tony/AJ, Carmela/Melfi, Silvio/Melfi, Richie/Ralphie (at first Ralphie felt to me like Richie 2.0, but he ended up being very different), Tony/Janice, AJ/Chris, AJ/Meadow, Chris/Jackie

“The Witch is in the House” is a song with music by Michael Giacchino, Brandon Christy, and Adam Cohen and lyrics by Jeannie Laurie. The song was created for The Muppets Wizard of Oz and first appeared with the TV movie in 2005.

The song is performed by Miss Piggy (Eric Jacobson) playing the wicked witch of the west. She is backed by Dr. Teeth Bill Barretta) and the Electric Mayhem (Eric Jacobson as Animal, John Kennedy as Floyd, Tyler Bunch as Janice, and Dave Goelz as Zoot). i have yet to stop thinking about @ayeti’s muppet dress code met gala tags , so here are some ideas for a sketch where all of the muppets go to the met gala:

kermit wears a standard tuxedo. after all, he’s pretty much just there to serve as arm candy for miss piggy, who is wearing the most extravagant dress you can imagine

gonzo wears an outfit that news outlets laud as “strange” and “very gender.” conservative propaganda newspapers include the headline “this is what liberals want” above pictures of his outfit.

mildred huxletter misunderstands the assignment and comes cosplaying as jackie kennedy. george the janitor, her date, wears his janitors uniform. (yes, he brings his mop as well, fully prepared for a fistfight/mopfight with beauregard. nobody has the heart to tell him that beauregard is not even in attendance.)

sam eagle wears nothing (which is what he always wears). the only reason he agreed to attending the gala was so that he could throw straw wrappers and other small items into billionaires’ hair, so as to fulfill his civic duty to be a nuisance (or more!) to the rich. he has the same attitude ron from parks and rec would have if he had to go to the met gala.

janice eats the vast majority of the shrimp cocktails. she also offers to tye-dye camilla the chicken’s feathers. (she may or may not be a little bit high.)

animal is not invited to the muppet met gala. people protest in the streets over it.

pepe the king prawn spends the entire night trying to convince lorn michaels that he would be a better weekend update anchor than colin jost.

dr bunsen honeydew misunderstands the assignment and comes to the met gala wearing a homemade t shirt that says in all caps sharpie “PLUTO IS A REAL PLANET”. beaker, dressed up in a styrofoam pluto costume dr bunsen honeydew made him, dutifully stands behind him (trembling).

statler and waldorf steal costumes and make up from a local kiss cover band the night before the met gala. they come dressed up as kiss members as a form of satire. they, of course, heckle everyone’s red carpet outfits.

uncle deadly misunderstands the assignment and shows up to the met gala in full elizabethan era garb but with a goth twist, a shakespeare script in one hand and phantom of the opera mask in another. he flees the gala after discovering that it is not, in fact, a meetup of the local “goth shakespeare and phantom of the opera theatre troupe slash knitting club.”

crazy harry is shot out of a canon and lands face-first on the red carpet (which is now more burgundy thanks to all the ashes and soot crazy harry has on him). he immediately stands up and does a thumbs up at a nonexistent camera (he is three hours late to the event). marvin suggs, having heard the boom of crazy harry’s landing, comes out though to give him a high five.

link hogthrob is wearing a replica of ralph macchio’s costume in the outsiders.

rizzo the rat casually comes out as a transgender man in conversation with robert pattinson.

15. recommend and review a book.

From the above list because they are the freshest in my mind, I'd highly recommend Me and Sam-Sam Handle the Apocalypse and The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys. Despite the title, Me and Sam isn't about the apocalypse but an event that feels like this, hyperbolically, to the main character. But we see an autistic girl make a friend, stand up to her bullies, save a bunch of people, show empathy for others, and be happily autistic. Truly amazing! It is a middle reader, so not for everyone, but I greatly enjoyed it. The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys is about Spain under Franco's regime. It starts in the 1950s where we meet all of our characters in their late teens, early twenties and we see their lives unfold and twine together. Then in 1975 after Franco dies, they come back together in a surprising way. I cried so hard through the last part of the book, but it was well written, the characters are so strong and I rooted for all of them.

19. most disliked popular books?

Hmm, well I usually avoid reading popular books to avoid this. For example, I'm currently not reading Where the Crawdads Sings or any Colleen Hoover because everyone is blowing up about them and I can't trust the opinions of such a large swath of the population.

It wasn't very often that he would let himself think it, but sometimes, Jack really hated Dawn Clearly.

"So, do you have any siblings?"

The expectant way that his date cocked her head told him everything that he needed to know about the rest of the evening: the feigned interest in his job as a data security consultant, the all too eager suggestion that maybe they should head back to his place, her number blowing up his phone when he demurred, having learned that lesson a little too well the last time that he'd made the mistake of taking a woman home on the first date.

There wasn't any point to the pretending.

"You know, I really don't think this is working."

"Excuse me?"

"If you want her autograph, just buy it off Ebay like everyone else, and leave me out of it."

He signaled at the waitress for the check. Maybe he could get a to-go box for his tacos. They'd be soggy, but at least he could eat them in the privacy of his apartment without having to worry about everything he said ending up on the front page of People.

Jesus Fucking Christ, it wasn't even like he was the famous one here.

But he was used to it. Mostly.

Donna had made it big back when he was a senior in college. After years of driving his little sister and her garage band of the week around to every Elks Lodge function hall and local bar mitzvah, he couldn't help but be excited for her. Unfortunately, that excitement wouldn't last.

It was a fluke, really, Hiroshima Shadow's first record deal. Some local dj had heard them at an open mic night or something. Jack still wasn't entirely sure of all the details; he'd had midterm to cram for when it happened. But they'd barely even been a real band back then: just Donna, and Paul, and Steph replacing Lizzie, who'd quit to go back to school for accounting. The name had been a work in progress.

But even in those early days, when they still played a lot of covers by the Clash and the Dead Kennedys and sometimes Pansy Division, but with a lot more indistinct screaming, it only seemed like it would be a matter of time before the rest of the world would come to appreciate how good of a guitarist Donna was. How big of a star she would be. The smirking face on far too many billboards.

Hiroshima Shadow's rise had been almost meteoric. Warped Tour and MTV and Rock am Ring in Germany. By then, Donna and Paul had been writing most of their own songs, scathing and funny and haunting, and easier on Donna's vocal chords than the screaming of the early days. They'd broken up before the year was over, and reformed, without their bassist, as the O-Ring, a kind of "fuck you" to Paul's homophobic parents.

Paul had spent that Thanksgiving on their couch, drinking and watching hockey with Jack while Jack's mom fretted about the turkey and the pie and the stuffing. Donna, Dawn Clearly by then, some announcer's drunken mistake that she had just gone with, could never have been accused of being the most supportive of friends. It was the first time that Jack could remember being really, genuinely angry with his sister.

It wasn't the last. Especially not when the first paparazzi photos came out.

Jack had been 25 then, still working as a software developer. Still a little heartbroken from having to turn Steph down, the touring and the fame already too much for him to deal with. Even for someone like Steph.

It was Janice in Administration who had shown him the pictures. Donna, visiting him at his new apartment. Donna and him, grabbing lunch. Donna, borrowing his Rutgers hoodie when it got too cold out.

They were all over the supermarket tabloids and the internet. They'd even printed his name.

It had taken Donna two days to put out a statement. By then, the damage had already been done.
