GREEN DAY "American Idiot"
Don't wanna be an American idiot Don't want a nation under the new media And can you hear the sound of hysteria? The subliminal mind-fuck America
Welcome to a new kind of tension All across the alienation Where everything isn't meant to be okay In television dreams of tomorrow We're not the ones who're meant to follow For that's enough to argue
Well, maybe I'm the faggot, America I'm not a part of a redneck agenda Now everybody, do the propaganda And sing along to the age of paranoia
Welcome to a new kind of tension All across the alienation Where everything isn't meant to be okay In television dreams of tomorrow We're not the ones who're meant to follow For that's enough to argue
Don't wanna be an American idiot One nation controlled by the media Information age of hysteria It's calling out to idiot America
Welcome to a new kind of tension All across the alienation Where everything isn't meant to be okay In television dreams of tomorrow We're not the ones who're meant to follow For that's enough to argue
Music and lyrics: Frank Edwin Wright Iii, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Ryan Pritchard

A right-wing talk show host running in a high-profile special election in Georgia allegedly voted illegally nine times while serving probation for felony convictions, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday.
The candidate, Brian K. Pritchard, is running in a Jan. 3 special election to replace former Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston, who died last month shortly after winning re-election. Pritchard is running against Sheree Ralston, the late legislator’s widow, in a safe Republican seat that David Ralston won uncontested last month.
Pritchard, who is now accused of voting illegally, has also falsely claimed the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” from former President Donald Trump, and accused Republican state officials of being “complicit,” according to the Journal-Constitution.
When Pritchard first registered to vote in Georgia in January 2008, he was still on probation after he pleaded guilty in 1996 to felony forgery and theft charges in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. In Georgia, former felons aren’t allowed to vote until they’ve completed their sentence, which includes probation.
In February 2021, Georgia’s State Election Board accused Pritchard of voting while serving a felony sentence, one of dozens of voter fraud cases referred to prosecutors at the time, according to the Clay County Progress. At the time, Pritchard’s attorney said Pritchard was not aware he was considered a felon when he cast his ballots, according to the Journal-Constitution.
And last week, the office of Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr—one of those officials Pritchard accused of being “complicit” in the “stolen” election, according to the Journal-Constitution—said in a filing that Pritchard had broken the law each time he voted, the Journal-Constitution reported.
Carr’s office said Pritchard voted five times in 2008 and four times in 2010, according to August-based TV station WDRW. Carr’s office has requested a hearing in Fannin County, where Pritchard lives, for the week of Jan. 9, after the special election.
Pritchard could face up to $45,000 in fines, but he hasn’t been criminally charged and he wouldn’t be disqualified from serving in the legislature if he wins the election, according to the Journal-Constitution.
Pritchard has vehemently denied the accusation and appeared to imply he was targeted due to his candidacy. “I’ve not done anything wrong here,” Pritchard, who also owns a media company called FetchYourNews, told the Journal-Constitution Monday. “I guess if you’re apprehending public enemy No. 1, here I am.”
“I will not be intimidated,” Pritchard told the Dawson County News last week. “I will not be bullied.”
Pritchard said in a press release when he announced his run last week that he “will always support our law enforcement.”
“The safety and well-being of our citizens will alway be a top priority of mine,” Pritchard said in the release. “Keep Atlanta crime out of our mountains!”
These accusations haven’t stopped Pritchard from spreading lies about the 2020 election. Pritchard accused Carr and Gov. Brian Kemp of being “complicit” in a stolen election during an April episode of his web show.
“I don't believe 81 million people voted for [Joe Biden],” Pritchard said at the time. “When they stole an election, and Brian Kemp was complicit, the Governor of Georgia, and Chris Carr the Attorney General was complicit in Georgia, and you see Joe Biden…this is what they did to us.”
During the same episode, Pritchard said that Biden has dementia and called Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock a “false prophet.”

Planet Dune (2021)
My rating: 4/10
The unofficial Dune prequel you didn't know you needed. Because you don't. It's quite bad and rather nonsensical.

Chortle headlines.
Tumblr media
Some of these are interesting. I don't know if it bodes well if Paddy Young is the absolute best rookie comedians in all of Britain, but he definitely had a good show last year (that got streamed on NextUp from Edinburgh). I have trouble believing anyone wrote a show that's better than both Paul Foot's Dissolve and Ahir Shah's Ends, but to be fair, I haven't seen John Kearns' show and he is very fucking good at these things, makes me hope even more that he'll be doing something in Edinburgh while I'm there. Alex Horne got an award for Taskmaster being an outstanding achievement, not quite sure what that means but I think it's accurate. I think if you look up the definition of "breakthrough act" you'll just find a note that says "see Sam Campbell's career throughout 2023", so that couldn't really have gone any other way. I've heard Kiri Pritchard-McLean compere a bunch on NextUp things, she is in fact very good at clubs. I haven't seen any of the other nominees but I'm still sure that James Acaster deserved to win that best tour one. I couldn't stomach the amount of Celebrity Glamour in Joe Lycett's new show but he is a great comedian and he is definitely made to be a TV comedian, which in some ways could be an insult but I really mean it as a compliment, he's great at that, good for him. Munya Chawawa posts highly amusing song parodies on YouTube. Fern Brady's is one of the best comedian books I've read. Three Bean Salad I was unable to get into, but maybe I'll give it another shot sometimes, after I finish with the winners of that radio award, John and Elis - well done to them for getting over ten years and not completely falling apart. I usually find it hard to get into sketch comedy (or anything that isn't straight stand-up) but Lorna Rose Treen made me laugh with character things last summer, so she probably deserves that one.
Those are my unsolicited opinions on that. The existence of Taskmaster is definitely an outstanding achievement for all involved.
Tumblr media
This a special feature that happens every once in a while, called "Chortle publishes the contents of Daniel Kitson's mailing list". I find it gets funnier the less it sounds like Steve Bennett knows about the news items beyond the contents of the mailing list email, and in this case, that is clearly fuck all. But anyway, it's a great show and exciting announcement, anyone who has the opportunity should go see this tour. He said in the email that he might try to get something going in NYC later this year, which would be incredibly logistically difficult for me to get to (8.5-hour drive each way if I can borrow a car from someone, which would be tough, 14 hours on the bus otherwise, I've been told I can't take any more vacation days in 2024 because I used them on the London/Edinburgh trip), but still, I have found myself wondering how I might be able to make that work if he actually announces it.
Tumblr media
Fucking hell. I can't believe this. My local comedian Facebook group is going pretty wild in response to this news. That's fucking huge, a massive amount of stuff is centred around this. To be honest I'm still not clear on the scope of this news so I won't go into it too much, I'll just say, fucking hell. Truly shocking. That's like a sport just canceling its national championships halfway through the season.
Tumblr media
Excellent. Everyone should read this. His 2023 show (which I think he's still touring) is one of my favourite comedy shows ever. And the one before that, which inspired this book, is also very fucking funny, though not as good as his latest one.
Also, I am up for a trend of one comedian per year writing a book about their relatively recent autism diagnosis. Who do we think it'll be in 2025? I have approximately four to five suggestions.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Desi Arnaz, Benedict of Nursia, Moe Berg, Ed Bournemann, Dale Bozzio, Larry Carlton, Karen Carpenter, John Cowsill, Daniel Craig, John Cullum, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Maxwell Street, Jimmy Davis, Becky G, Rory Gallagher, John Gardner, Mikhail Gorbachev, Laird Hamilton, Sam Houston, Bryce Dallas Howard, John Irving, Jennifer Jones, Léon Jongen, Jon Bon Jovi, Orrin Keepnews, the 1933 film KING KONG, Papa Lightfoot, BarBara Luna, Madonna’s 1989 single “Like a Prayer,” Chris Martin, Gates McFadden, drummer-producer Tony Meehan (The Shadows), Method Man, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Lauraine Newman, Jay Osmond, Ethan Peck, Elvis Presley’s 1956 single “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” Luke Pritchard (The Kooks), Dottie Rambo, Red Saunders, Dennis Seaton (Musical Youth), Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony (1969), Bedřich Smetana, the 1995 musical SMOKY JOE’S CAFÉ, Ludovico Spontoni, the 1965 film SOUND OF MUSIC, composer-trumpeter Derek Watkins (James Bond films), Kurt Weill, Tom Wolfe, "Théo" Ysaÿe, and the creative provocateur, poet, and singer-songwriter Lou Reed. He was the principal songwriter for The Velvet Underground and his solo career spanned 5 decades.
Velvet Underground were not commercially successful but are now regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of rock. Brian Eno said that everyone who heard the first VU album wanted to start a band. Reed had a deadpan voice that, for me, required forgiveness as singers go (though he did step up on occasion, particularly when he sung with The Blind Boys on THE RAVEN album). Eventually I connected with his noir fiction, transgressive “eyewitness reporting” lyrics and songcraft. He neither approved or disapproved of the subjects he sang about and, in the end, he just wanted to write catchy rock’n’roll. Over the years I’ve performed at least 6 Reed/VU songs—recording 2: “What Goes On” and “Sunday Morning,” on which I was joined by members of The Badlees (who did a splendid job in one afternoon). Reed himself commended our cover and promoted it on his website in the mid-90s. HB and RIP Lou.

Could This Be the Black Monk of Pontefract?
A paranormal-obsessed mum claims the infamous Black Monk of Pontefract could have photobombed her mirror selfie - after she spotted a sinister 'face' lurking behind her in the haunted house. Beth Jade spent a night in what's dubbed one of the UK's spookiest homes, 30 East Drive, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, to contact the phantom many claim haunts its rooms.
The 29-year-old has since revealed images shot through a full-length mirror which she believes contains a ghostly face that could be the dreaded Black Monk at the top of the stairs. Her frightening snaps show a spooky silhouette with 'chiselled cheekbones and flaring nostrils' gazing down from inside a toy pram.
The mum-of-three claims the doll that was sitting inside had been removed by her 24-year-old sister Casey Lee earlier in the night to 'entice spirits'. Beth only spotted the 'encounter' when she got home the next day but admits if she'd seen it while still in the house she'd have insisted on leaving.
The Black Monk of Pontefract is believed to have caused what some call 'the UK's most violent haunting' where a family say they were terrorised after moving into 30 East Drive during 1966. Parents-of-two Jean and Joe Pritchard claim they saw the monk numerous times - even floating over their bed.
Tumblr media
Infamous home at 30 East Drive
They said lights were turned off and on, pictures were slashed, furniture disappeared and heavy breathing could be heard throughout the house. Facebook users were left stunned by the images, with some calling them 'the best photos they've seen' at the house and others feeling 'creeped out' from just looking at them.
Beth, from Halton, Leeds, said: "I'm looking directly up at this thing but I didn't see it at the time. It definitely looks like a face. I can see the nostrils open, I can see eyes, really chiselled cheekbones, and if you zoom in closer you can see pupils.
"It could be the Black Monk, but I don't know what he's meant to look like. Some people said it could be a demon. I didn't know I'd caught it until I'd got home. I was looking through the pictures and listening to videos to see if I could hear anything, then I saw the top of the stairs and thought 'that didn't look right'.
I wondered if it was the doll, but my sister removed the doll from the pram earlier that night to entice a spirit. If I'd have reviewed that photo in the house I would have been so scared. I couldn't sleep in there so I would have woken everyone up and told them I'm not staying.
"I didn't realise how good it was until I put it on Facebook. I saw the comments and realised it's a really good photo. After the things I've experienced I'm 100% a believer in the paranormal. I think that's why I wasn't as shocked as other people have been about these. I'm more intrigued than scared by them."
Beth says her fascination with discovering paranormal activity began when she and her friends played with an ouija board at just 13 years old. She says she's researched the Black Monk and visited to 'see what all the fuss was about', however she was left disappointed by the lack of violent activity during the night.
