Fic Recommendations Needed
Okay, all this fantastic fan art with Eddie in Steve's clothes -- I need a fic. I need to read a fic where Eddie was carried out bride over the threshold style by Steve and is staying in Steve's house. He's sad about his trailer, sad about his stuff, but at least his guitar is okay.
But that means he is sharing Steve's clothes. At first, he starts with the stuff Steve uses the least (darker colors and old worn clothes that Steve was on the verge of chucking), but then he finds the mustard sweater or something and wears it with his hair up as he's trying to 'feel useful' by doing something super domestic. Maybe metal music blaring as he vacuums or something small like that.
Steve comes back, sees it, and the King of Domestic Kink's brain goes *new world order accepted, Eddie is spouse* -- with suave Steve kicking in with flirting and Mr. Invade Your Personal Space suddenly has Steve invading his.

IT’S BEEN SO LONG I’M SO SORRY
nancy being the gun in her own metaphor…. yeah. truly. barb was really serving her purpose as a catalyst character (no hate to barb ofc! and it’s only because nancy was so emotionally tied to barb that the role worked but yknow. for what we saw of barb on-screen she was acting as a catalyst and a drag-both-wheelers-into-this kinda thing). on the other hand, it would’ve been an amusing sit-com style show if they added some element of nancy having no idea what’s going on. her and steve and maybe jonathan knows? but they Can Obviously Tell something’s up when their little brothers are visibly hiding something -> something turns out to be a small girl who was raised in a lab and has superpowers. mike making up the stupidest lies and nancy not buying them for a second but then again, who goes from “my brother and his friends are being weirder than usual” to “well damn ig they’re hiding the existence of a hellscape parallel universe”. tangent over lmao but you get the point !!
scuse you the writers are lit rally hinting at ronance becoming canon have you not seen these absolutely and completely real script moments . picture below. (/j but i wISH they would drop anything. one line,, one thought,,,, pls)
Tumblr media
THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RONANCE PART I THINK. nancy must come to the terrifying realization one day that she has friends again and. it sounds funny but god you know she would Freak Out over the idea of letting another person get close to her. but robin calling her up from family tree video to tell nancy about something that really, truly, could not have waited to be told. and nancy, smiling fondly the whole time and doing her little phone cord twirly thing !! and robin makes fun of nancy’s driving skills but only from a safe distance outside the car, and nancy narrows her eyes from behind the wheel of her very crookedly parked car and says “shut up”. gay.
SOMETHING OF A DYNAMIC GOING ON THERE INDEED!! they have the brain and willpower to pull it off
OH MY GOD YEAH. the byers-hopper family… is one of those families that’s been hit so many times and they’re going to brave the apocalypse together as a family. and they’re warm and cozy like home-cooked meals and old lamps and blankets piled upon the couch. and then the wheelers are trying so hard to live the stock photo family life… ted wearing his stupid dress shirts from his rocking chair and reading the newspaper 24/7… the kids are all gay and they must know but none of them are ever going to say anything…. quite literally a nuclear family. the wheelers have literally modeled themselves after the thirty-second scenes in tv shows of “happy average suburban families” and that’s all they know how to do now
HADHSKFJSKF OHHHHH. god it was really a robbery. ronance supremacy but the s1 monster hunting trio vibes were unmatched. they would have been so good together. screw the duffers and their insistence that nancy is a simple minded teenage girl when it comes to high school boys. the fruity four from the upside down yeah sure!! but ALSO. the return of stoncy.
yeah !!! i can’t quite pinpoint why it’s so central to her character, whether it has something to do with the roots of her journalism passion or not, but it’s been a recurring pattern for nancy to be drawn to the people who can understand without having to be shielded from the full truth. perhaps there’s some wheeler family thing going on ? the wheelers have virtually no communication skills but it sure would help if someone who you get close to is also aware of the lurking danger and :sparkles: shared trauma :sparkles: yknow. the mike point is so good and,, clearly they don’t talk about their feelings and fears with one another. but especially on nancy’s end because what could she possibly say to her younger brother that wouldn’t essentially imply she was upset that his best friend was alive while hers wasn’t?
YEAHYEHAYEJSHF. she’s so intricate and now it’s such a connection. nancy wheeler brainrot. instead of brain there is nancy wheeler…. i love talking about her with YOU <3333
OH TRUE . they all need a metaphorically through shaking up and down. that house. that house!
and woah! me reveal?? probably unnecessary and i def could’ve just copied the link to the original post over but no matter the deed is done! please ignore the fact that i still have not nancy wheeler ified the blog i will eventually get around to it! besides tumble mobile phone browser logged out is really an experience <3
HEYYYY sorry for the late reply teehee
LOL i love the idea of nancy being in the dark for longer. i think it would literally drive her up the walls crazy until she figures it out and the notion of her figuring it out completely independently from everything else is pretty funny and would be an interesting concept!!! also the thought of if in season 1 nancy and mike had more interactions after both of them knowing about the supernatural but knowing the other knew and so they're both being dodgy and so weird lol
#REALSCRIPT but i'd literally believe it.....when they were walking in the upside down i just KNOW nancy was so mad at robin for running ahead and leaving her in an awkward conversation with her ex!!!! also they are definitely the kind of couple that locks eyes when someone around them is being annoying/awkward...having a silent conversation and slightly rolling their eyes and laughing about it later.........bitchy gfs!!!!!!!
NANCY HAVING TO REALIZE SHE HAS FRIENDS AGAIN AHHHHH it's so true and i think it would stir up such an interesting mix of feelings for her. like i love the scene where she's being questioned at the trailer park and everyone shows up and her face kinda collapses in relief!!!!!!! it makes so much sense why nancy would be the most on the fringe of everyone that remains in hawkins at the start of s4 (other than max) bc she pulls away and seems to think she doesnt know how to be a friend to anyone anymore. like even before s4 her quote "isn't it weird we only seem to hang out when the world's ending?" applies to her relationship with like everyone!!!!!
also robin making fun of nancy's poor driving and nancy is just like you do not even have a license. them fighting over what music to play (nancy wins like most of the time)!!! them always arriving earlier than everyone else bc nancy is very careful but she's also a total menace on the road. car hijinks!!
there is something so special and important to me about the thought of jonathan and will being secretly jealous of mike and nancy because they never have to worry about bills or money or college or whether their dad is going to be normal-terrible or scary-terrible. all the while mike and nancy are secretly jealous of the byers (and now byers-hoppers) because there is such an easy affection, communication comes so natural to them they dont even have to always put it to words, just an overall feeling of loving and safety and closeness that could not be more nonexistent in the wheeler household. and, like you said about nancy and her communication skills, that's a part of why nancy is so guarded, she just doesn't know how to be close like that with people. or maybe she does, or she did once, but it doesn't come easily. but by the end of s5 will have that beautiful found family and so many people in her life that she can be open to AND THAT WILL BE HER HAPPY ENDING NOT BORING MARRIED WITH CHILDREN I BELIEVE IT......
we are going to get stoncy next season steve and jonathan are going to fall in an upside down hole and robin and nancy have to figure out a way to get them out (i keep saying this)
as a fellow nancy brain rot haver did you also go through the 5 stages of grief when that supposed script leaked and it seemed like she was into the idea of 6 kids + rv life......IDC ABOUT SHIPS the complete character assassination that entailed i needed to lie down. also i was thinking about what an exhausting hiatus it was going to be if i had to defend her nonstop for the jonathan who? of it all. (side note that script being fake is so hilarious whoever wrote it is so nasty for "jonathan who?" and "i hate who i am" LOL)
HIIIIII BTW IT IS SO NICE TO KNOW YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! did you know that collectively we have written ~10k words just about nancy wheeler. new dsm entry just for us

so... i’m back because i have too many of these and you asked for more so here we are so this is like a kind of modern au, am also thinking no monsters but i could go either way, i’m thinking like 2012-2015, Hawkins is a small town and because of that it’s views are still pretty conservative, its gotten better over the years but kids still get picked on for their race, sexuality, anything that makes them abnormal, in general it’s just less accepting (pt.1)
(pt.2) So Steve and Tommy are hanging around one day and Steve mentions he thinks he’s bi, Tommy just gets grossed out goes as far as to call steve some slurs and go home, and steve is crushed and terrified, by the time he shows up to school on monday the entire school knows and there are notes in his lockers telling him to kill himself and get out of the school and Nancy, one of the few people who supports him, tries to help, along with Johnathan who explains that they still love him...
(pt.3) and he even goes as far as to introduce Steve to his brother, with a quick explain that he thinks he’s gay, and that he wants a good role model for him and steve defiantly cries, that’s how he ends up meeting the nerds, when Billy comes into town he almost immediately realizes his dad wanted to come here because it will be hard for billy to be openly gay without him knowing in minutes, on his first day people keep telling him to stay away from Harrington, no one will say why tho...
(pt.4?) So a few days pass and Billy has yet to meet this harrington kid, but he’s heard stories, used to be too dog but something happened and now he’s labeled a freak. The first time they meet is when Billy comes to practice for the first time, they don’t talk Billy just watches the kid, can’t help but think he’s hot as fuck, but know saying anything about that will probably get him hate crimed, so after practice they all head to the showers...
(pt.5) Steve seems like he’s trying to get out of there fast, keeps looking anywhere but at the other guys, when tommy comes in he seems to get even more stressed, immediately tommy starts mocking him, talking about how he doesn’t wanna be stuck naked next to steve, some of the other guys join in and billy finally gets it, when he starts listing again tommy has gotten straight up vulgar, asking gross shit and everyone is laughing  and steve looks like he wants to die...
Okay, so I think I’m gonna write something longer for this because I love this idea, and I’ve had some ideas similar to this. And I may even revisit this for a full fic 🤔
(My ballet fic which will start being posted on Tuesday goes into this, that Steve was picked on for doing ballet and being queer and being femme.)
So, when Steve was like, thirteen, we logged onto the family computer and typed in “how to know if you’re gay” because all he knew was that Indiana Jones made him feel the exact same way Rihanna does, so he did what all us baby queers did, and asked google.
Google tells him that maybe, but there’s also something called the Kinsey Scale, and maybe he’s not gay, but bisexual, or pansexual, or just plain old queer. And all Steve knows is he likes the men on the cover of Sports Illustrated just as much as he likes the women.
When Steve and Tommy are freshly sixteen, and drinking stolen booze, and sitting on Steve’s brand new BMW, staring at the stars over the quarry, Steve tells Tommy that he kinda wants to kiss boys as much as he wants to kiss girls. That he wants to be touched by other boys, to touch other boys. Maybe his drunk tongue slips and says he watched some gay porn and maybe the idea of getting fucked sounds kinda good, kinda hot.
Tommy flips on a fucking dime. He sits there and calls Steve names, tells him he’s disgusting says shit like is that why you’re friends with me? You want me to fuck you? and won’t get back in the car with Steve who cries while he drives home.
And come Monday, there’s the f-slur written on his locker I feel really weird about saying it or writing it out and everyone is pushing him around, and he gets accused of trying to make moves on other guys, and none of the girls will talk to him anymore, and he sits by himself at lunch, until Jonathan Byers, resident weird kid, slaps his lunch down across from Steve and just sits down and starts talking like they’re old friends. Like Steve hasn’t ever pushed him into a wall of lockers. And Steve is having too much fun laughing at this kid’s jokes to actually feel like he’s hit rock bottom.
So he becomes friends with Jonathan. They start hanging out after school, at the Byers’ place, and he meets Will, and he can practically smell the queer on the kid when he gives Steve a once over, goes bright red, and stutters out something about having homework to do.
Mrs’ Byers is kind, and invites him to stay for dinner, and sure, they heard that the Harrington kid’s a f-- but they don’t care, because he’s a sweet kid who helps Joyce with the dishes and plays catch with Will when Lonnie blows him off, and maybe Will blurts out that he has a crush on his friend Mike, and Steve just hugs the kid and wishes to god that it’s easier in Hawkins for this kid than it was for him.
And he and Jonathan get high one day, and Jonathan says he has a thing for Nancy, and Nancy’s been pretty sweet to Steve since he was forced outta the closet, so he helps him out, gets him a date, and they’re happy, and Steve has friends who care about him, who will go to college parties in the city with him, will make sure he keeps his location on his phone shared as he flirts with anyone he likes, has sex with anyone he likes. He has friends that sit with him when he cries in the library after he finds another note in his locker that says something along the lines of kill yourself f--.
And they’re in the parking lot, hanging out before school when Billy gets there, and Billy’s hot and Steve is in love when Billy looks at him across Tina’s Halloween party, smirking and winking. But Tommy's there, yammering in his ear that Harrington was top dog around here, but now, stay away from him. He’s a fucking freak.
And Billy wants to know more, because Harrington is hot, and has a cute kind of deer caught in headlights look about him, but all of his social media is private, and no one will tell Billy anything about him, and he learns to stop asking when Tommy says why do you care so much? You queer for him? because he’s in Hawkins now, and he’s not allowed to be gay in Hawkins. No one is.
And after basketball, Steve stays out of the showers as long as he can, but coach sends him out of the gym, says the school doors’ll be locked past six, so Steve tries to be stealthy, tries to take the shower in the corner, but then Tommy starts running his mouth about not wanting to get too close to Harrington, who is pointedly not looking at anyone, just staring at the drain by his own foot, but then Tommy starts going off about how, maybe he should give it to Harrington, bend him over and take him real good, just the way he’s always wanted, you know, he told me he wanted me to fuck him when we were sixteen and Billy finally gets it.
And Steve looks miserable, so Billy waits after practice, waits til all the other guys are gone, til it’s just him and Harrington in the locker room, and he turns and point-blank asks Steve if he’d want to go out sometime, makes it clear he means on a date. And Steve doesn’t know what to do, thinks this is some joke or something, so he doesn’t say anything until Billy corners him by his car, the same BMW Tommy once said was probably covered in Steve’s AIDs and tells him everything.
Tells him his dad caught him hookin’ up with a guy, that his dad brought him here, to a small conservative town with small conservative people, with the promise that if he acts on his impulses, the people will take care of it before I have to, Billy. He tells Steve that he thinks he’s cute that he wants to take him out on a date.
Steve is so excited he invites Nancy and Jonathan over to help him pick out what to wear, and Billy picks him up, and they go to dinner and a movie in the city, and it’s so nice and fun and Billy kisses him sweetly on the doorstep, and in two weeks, Billy is his boyfriend and they double with Nancy and Jonathan, and go on dates in the city almost every weekend, and they talk to Will about boys, tell him that liking boys is okay that it’s not gross or bad or wrong.
And maybe everything isn’t perfect, Billy’s dad is still a piece of trash, and people still are assholes to Steve, but they have each other, and they love each other, and so things are pretty okay.

The Robin 80th Anniversary Special
Tumblr media
It's not a secret that I'm first and foremost a Dick Grayson fan, whether he comes dressed as Robin, Nightwing, Batman or something else. But I try to be charitable and be happy for fans of the other Robins that they got a pice of the birthday cake, i. e. the Robin 80th Anniversary Special.
For your enjoyment (?), here are my thoughts about the book. Spoilers ahead, obviously – don't like, don't read!
I honestly thought almost all of the stories were ok – but pretty forgettable. Marv Wolfman's spin on Dick leaving to become Nightwing, in "A little nudge" (art by Tom Grummett and Scott Hanna), is probably the only one I will remember and reference in the future. I don't know if or how it is supposed to fit into the (any?) continuity, but as far as I can see, it works nicely in the current setting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dick's parting from Robin and Bruce was successively portrayed as more and more hostile. When he originally left Robin to become Nightwing (1983–1984), the two still had a good relationship. This changed in comics to, first, that Bruce decided to retire Robin, and then to that Bruce outright fired Dick and kicked him out of the cave. This lead to that their relationship was portrayed as poor, antagonistic even, for a good many comics years.
The bad mood was picked up by Batman The Animated Series, where Dick left being resentful of Bruce and his methods.
I don't have a lot of good things to say about what has happened to the Bat-family after Flashpoint. But from what we've seen from scattered panels, Dick was the one who decided he wanted to leave Robin. You can read Marv Wolfman's story as confirmation of that. Which is nice.
Bruce is only a little bit of a jerk in this story, being utterly rigid about that Robin has to follow orders. Dick, however, chooses to stay with a kid that had been shot instead of following the criminals.
Dick has had it with Bruce's rules and leaves the cave, but he says "later" rather than "goodbye".
It's made clear that those strict rules were Bruce's way to say, "I know you've grown up, and you should move on; I'll be fine without you."
Batman # 408, where Bruce decides to retire Robin because he got scared when the Joker shot Dick, is firmly established in my mind as the "correct" leaving story in my mind. It was the only one I had read and knew of for many years, and the two still part on decent terms. But Marv Wolfman's 80th Anniversary version has a lot going for it.
On to the rest of the stories...
"Aftershocks" By Chuck Dixon, art Scott McDaniel and Rob Hunter.
Tumblr media
Set during Cataclysm (a storyline from 1998) where Dick lived in Blüdhaven before he moved back to Gotham and became Batman. It's an action-filled story where (fingerstripe) Nightwing comes to Gotham after an earthquake has hit the city.
It's interesting to read this, living through the corona crisis that is going on right now. I don't know how it is where you live, but where I am, people are setting up networks to help people who can't go out to shop or walk the dog, University students are helping kids do their math lessons with the help of Facebook, people make masks for health workers etc. But when Chuck Dixon writes what happens after a catastrophe, Dick has to fight his way through masked thugs who are trying to rob an ambulance of "painkillers and tranks" when he tries to save a cab from falling with a damaged bridge. A woman is giving birth inside the car, and the story ends with that the mother wants to name the boy after Nightwing.
"Well...Robin works, right", he says.
"Team building" by Devin Grayson, art Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapund.
Tumblr media
Well, I'll always soak up everything that has to do with Dick and the Titans – Teen Titans, New Teen Titans, Titans, any Titans...
Devin Grayson wrote The Titans 1999–2000, which is the setting of this story. Most of it takes place inside a H.I.V.E. locale, where an exasperated boss (Damien Darkh) chews out his soldiers after a fight with the Titans. But Darkh decides not to kill the lot of them, because they did distract the Titans while he stole a red crystal/power source. Of course, it turns out Dick is the soldier who has kept his helmet on; he takes the crystal with him and gives Darkh a bit of advice on team-building on his way out.
"Generally speaking, fear of execution isn't a great motivator. I've found basic team-building and morale-boosting to be much more effective. Like, I'm just spitballing here, but... You ever consider a pizza night?"
Well, it did keep me amused, and it shows us that Dick is a good leader and strategist, (and a great acrobat who manages to get out of the H.I.V.E. uniform with one hand, on the way out), although it isn't exactly a surprise that Dick was in the building when you get near the end.
"The Lesson Plan" by Tom King and Tim Seeley, art Mikel Janín.
Tumblr media
Now, I do like some things about the Grayson run, but with a bit of distance, I've realized it was mostly the art. The sexualization of Dick and how King and Seely wrote him as a guy who jumps first and plans never got tiresome. This story is in-character for Grayson; Dick is accompanied by a girl (Paris) from St Hadrian's on a mission, and on the way, he remembers the lessons Batman gave him and imparts his own interpretation of them to Paris. As is Batman says, "plan everything", and Dick says "Improvise. Leap first... figure it all out on the way down." Ergo, classic King and Seeley. Also, it is possibly implied Dick made out with a beautiful girl that turned out to be gorilla in disguise...? Yep, vintage King and Seeley.
Other than that, I don't have a big problem with the story. Some things ring true to me – as when Dick remembers Batman saying, "At their core, people are cowardly and self-serving. Trust no one until you know them. And even then, never completely". And what Dick says is, "Give the benefit of the doubt until you gotta knock 'em out."
For my own peace of mind, I'm reading this as Dick is half-joking with his advice. It's not like we've never seen him make plans and be suspicious post-Flashpoint.
On a side note, one of the best characterizations of Dick Grayson to my mind is a panel from Black Mirror. When Dick explains he had injected James Gordon Jr with a subdermal tracer, and says about himself, "I am a softie. And I do try to see the best in people... but that doesn't mean I'm stupid."
Tumblr media
Detective Comics # 881. By Scott Snyder, art Jock and Francesco Francavilla.
"More Time" by Judd Winnick, art Dustin Nguyen.
Tumblr media
Jason has a cute story about him repairing Thomas Wayne's watch as a present to Bruce. He started the work as a tiny Robin (too tiny, in my opinion, but with Dustin Nguyen on art it probably couldn't turn out any other way) and finished the work as Red Hood. Jason delivers the present to Bruce on his birthday, placing it on the Batmobile while it is parked in a Gotham alley.
"Extra Credit" by Adam Beechen, art Freddie E. Williams II.
Tim has an appointment with the guidance counsellor at Gotham City High School. Tim sees a future in law enforcement (that's the first I've heard of that, but I'm no expert on Tim) and he's adopted (again, something I haven't seen post-Flashpoint). But the counsellor doubts that Tim will be admitted because he has nothing to show when it comes to extracurricular activities. It's kind of a fun few pages where the counsellor suggests things that Tim could do, and Tim thinks about what he does as Robin on his spare time.
"Boy Wonders" by James Tynion IV, art Javier Fernandez.
Tumblr media
Tim, Red Robin, is unsure what he wants to do with his life and goes to his brothers? fellow Robins? for advice.
I know emotions have been running high because Dick tells Tim that he is "demonstrably smarter" than he is, which makes it sound as if Dick is not really smart at all.
Again, for my peace of mind, I choose to read this as I want: that "big brother" Dick is encouraging, he has always thought highly of Tim, he has no ego to preserve. This doesn't make Dick a reliable narrator on the subject, and the page ends with that Tim thinks "He was the first. He's the best. He's always going to be the role model. "So, two brothers who admire each other.
Tim also talks to Jason and Tim, and the story ends with that he tells Batman he wants to start Gotham Knights protocol, the team in Detective Comics (Rebirth.) 2016-2018.
"Fitting In" by Amy Wolfram, art Damion Scott.
Tumblr media
Stephanie, as Robin has problems because Tim's Robin suit doesn't fit her female body. But at the end of the day, Bruce gives Stephanie her own "changing room" in the Bat-cave, because she's female.
...are Bruce and Alfred idiots? Did Dick, Jason and Tim have exactly the same body type when they were Robin? Stephanie deserved a story worth being told, not this one.
"My Best Friend" by Peter J. Tomasi, art Jorge Jimenez.
Tumblr media
Jonathan Kent writes a school essay about his best friend, Damian. As he writes the words on his laptop at home, they are illustrated with pcitures of the two as both Robin and Superboy, and as Damian and Jon in civvies. Tomasi and Jimenez worked with Super Sons (2017–2019), and though I didn't read that, I'm pretty sure this story is an extra chapter in that series.
"Bat and Mouse" by Robbie Thompson, art Ramon Villalobos.
Tumblr media
It's not the worst story in the book, but somehow the one I disliked the most. It is part of what is going on in Teen Titans and Bat-titles right now; we see Alfred's tombstone and how Batman and Robin have a strained relationship and difficulties in communicating. I'm not keeping up with what is going on with Damian and Bruce in detail, so I really can't say whether this story is consistent with how things have been going lately. I'll let Bruce-and-Damian fans take that ball.
To be honest, my reaction to "Bat and Mouse" is probably due to that I really, really don't like what's happened in the Bat titles lately. I firmly hope that the current situation will be changed and Alfred will be alive again, and I wish I could go back and re-read this book years from now without being reminded of this very dark time when DC seemingly doesn't want any money from me for new comics...
Being who I am, I probably take it waaaaay too seriously to try to understand where/if these stories fit in the DC continuity... The writers have probably (rightly) thought more about writing a good story than making it consistent with any grand plan for a timeline for all of the DC universe. But whatever.
The Grayson story clearly happens in a post-Flashpoint universe, as does Damian's and Tim's stories. But Tim says he's adopted, which I believe has never been said outright post-Flashpoint. And Stephanie has as far as I know not been Robin in this continuity. Chuck Dixon's Nightwing story is explicitly set during Cataclysm (a storyline from 1998) where Dick lived in Blüdhaven before he moved back to Gotham and became Batman. Post-Flashpoint, he moves to Blüdhaven for the first time in Nightwing vol 4., so Dixon's story should take place in the old continuity.
On the other hand. The last pages of the book are made to look like profile overviews in the Bat-computer and use pictures from different Robin runs. If the snippets of information are supposed to be the current continuity for the Robins, a lot from the pre-Flashpoint universe is back in canon.
Shortly, Dick was adopted (that's the word they use), formed the Teen Titans, moved to Blüdhaven and was Agent 37 for a while. Blüdhaven comes before Agent 37, but it's not explicitly stated when he first moved there. Because if Dick was in Blüdhaven before his time with Spyral, it is inconsistent with parts of Rebirth Nightwing. (Which I can live with...)
Jason's story starts as the street kid who tries to steal the tires of the Batmobile, his stint as Robin was short, and today, Red Hood has formed a tenuous alliance with Batman. Tim uncovered Batman's secret and made a bid to become the new Robin – and his new moniker "Drake" is acknowledged. Stephanie was Robin for a very short while. Damian was created with genetic material that Talia stole after a romantic tryst with Bruce, and he was bred to be an assassin.
Personally, of course, I think that Dick Grayson was worth more of an effort from DC on his 80th anniversary. But on the whole, the things we got were decent, "A little nudge" gave me something I will keep with me, and several of the covers are great.
(The cover photo is still pinched from Dan Jurgens' Twitter – I haven't bought all of the variant covers.)

Episode Reviews - Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4 (6 of 6)
To round of my look into season 4 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, here are my reviews of that season’s last two episodes.
Episode 25: In Theory
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
Lt. Commander Data and Lt. Jenna D'Sora are in the torpedo room configuring several probes with which the Enterprise will explore a nearby nebula. D'Sora explains that her ex who she just split up with has asked her to dinner, prompting Data to remind her why they broke up as part of a standing agreement between the pair of them. Later they play together in a chamber concert along with Keiko O'Brien. D'Sora complains of her abilities as a musician, but Data insists that he could not hear anything wrong.
Later, on the bridge, Data is reviewing the information from the probes sent into the nebula. He theorises that life might have evolved differently in the nebula because of the volume of dark matter detected. Captain Picard orders the ship to the nearest planet within the nebula. Data and Jenna configure further probes, when she kisses him on the cheek and then on the lips, before leaving the room. Data seeks the opinion of his friends, specifically Picard, Guinan, Geordi La Forge, Commander Riker, Counsellor Troi and Lt. Worf. Data decides to pursue the relationship and goes to Jenna's cabin with a bunch of flowers, where he informs her that he created a romantic subroutine for the relationship.
Meanwhile, the Enterprise is approaching an M-class planet within the nebula. Picard enters his ready room and finds his belongings scattered on the floor. He calls in Worf, who cannot explain their displacement. Jenna arrives at Data's cabin where he is painting. She tells him to continue, but is then annoyed when he does so, causing him some confusion. The ship arrives at the coordinates for the planet but finds nothing there. Then it suddenly appears as the ship's computer warns of a depressurization in the observation lounge. The crew investigate and find all the furniture piled in one corner of the room.
Data visits Jenna, but she seems unhappy and he is acting erratically in order to find an appropriate response to make her happy. It becomes evident to the crew that the nebula is causing distortions in space; Picard orders the ship into warp to leave the nebula as quickly as possible but this speeds up the distortions. Whilst investigating them, Lieutenant Van Mayter is killed when a distortion embeds her into the deck. Data discovers that dark matter is causing the distortions. The ship can detect the pockets at short range, but not in enough time to move out of the way. Worf proposes using a shuttle to lead the Enterprise out, and Picard insists on piloting it alone.
Picard pilots the shuttle through the field of distortion pockets; he is initially successful, but the shuttle is damaged near the perimeter of the nebula. Chief Miles O'Brien transports the Captain back to the ship before the shuttle is destroyed. However, the Enterprise is now near enough to the edge of the nebula to no longer need the shuttle to scout ahead, and they quickly depart. Afterwards, Jenna reveals to Data in his quarters that she broke up with her boyfriend because he was emotionally unavailable and then pursued Date because he was the same. Data realises that she is breaking up with him and explains that he will delete the subroutine. Jenna departs and Data is seemingly unperturbed, although his cat, Spot, jumps into his lap as if to comfort him.
Review:
This episode was Patrick Stewart’s directorial debut on the show, following on the heels of fellow cast member Jonathan Frakes taking a shot at directing during the previous season.  Like Frakes, Stewart was handed a Data episode to do, and in some respects it’s a good episode.  In others, it’s less brilliant, specifically having a techno-babble B-plot thrown in because TNG was very much enslaved to the idea that the character always had to have an enemy or an anomaly putting them at risk, regardless of whatever else might be going on.  This plot doesn’t inter-connect with the A-plot except for both things happening in the same episode, and it includes Picard playing shuttle pilot when he’s not really the TNG character of note by way of piloting skills.  In fact, TNG and DS9 never really had a definitive helm officer in the way that the original series had Sulu and Voyager had Tom Paris, which when you have to do an episode with this kind of B-plot is a bit of a must.
However, the meat of the episode is Data making forays into the world of romantic relationships, and to some degree I appreciate how some of his behaviours in this area are quite autistic.  His asking around the majority of the main cast and Guinan for advice, his inability to pick up relationship skills ‘on the fly’, and his emulation of stereotypical romantic interactions rather than just being himself are all things I can see someone on the spectrum doing.  Hell, I’ve done them all in my own unique way, and I can’t help but cringe a little reflecting on that.
However, Data is only able to go so far both with his relationship and with his representation of the autistic mindset in this scenario because he lacks emotion.  I understand that this was meant to be the point; according to Memory Alpha, a lot of original series fan mail for Spock was from women who felt they could reach the character’s suppressed emotional core.  This episode was born of a fascination with this aspect of fandom, only it was written to see if a romantic relationship could work with a being who was hard-wired not to feel any emotion, to really explore the ‘ghost in the machine’ concept through Data.
This, for me, is where the episode’s main plot really loses efficacy, because by definition a romantic relationship requires emotion, and as such Data was never going to succeed.  Frankly, I’d rather have seen them hold this plot off until the films when Data is finally given license to have emotions.  It would have been great to see Data have a romantic relationship then, because it would have been a more complete, well-rounded exploration of his status as an autism metaphor within the world of Trek.  As it is, characters like Voyager’s Doctor and Seven of Nine end up serving better in this capacity.
It’s also disappointing to see that, not unlike some of my own early experiences in romance, Data isn’t being approached out of a genuine romantic interest on the part of Jenna.  To her, he’s basically a re-bound fling; she’s struggling with being single again, keeps having to be reminded why this is so, and tries to make something happen with Data to ‘fill the void’.  It’s not unlike how some girls used to pretend to go out with me to test, and mock, my gullibility, and for me it’s right up there with people who go out with someone just to avoid being single (done that), or to get something else like a roof over their head or cash.  To my mind, no one should ever do anything like this; if you want a romantic relationship with someone, it should be real romance or nothing.
If you want a fling, a rebound or anything similar, then you seek out something more casual like friends-with-benefits, and you say that’s what you want up-front.  Leading people on is never ok, and it seems to me it only happens because of neurotypical selfishness and unwillingness to talk about you want before anything happens. The model of discussion-first-action-second is something that already exists within certain forms of sex play, and it’s probably going to gain wider and wider use over time for consent in general, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that would not only make all relationships more autism-friendly, but it would also vastly reduce the potential for being misled.
What would have improved this episode, aside from Data actually having emotions, would have been to see the female guest character seek him out just from general attraction with no recent ex being mentioned, and perhaps having the B-Plot put the A-Plot characters in danger more directly.  That would have helped the B-Plot gain some additional worth and would have created a dramatic scene that would have more conclusively answered the ‘ghost in the machine’ question around Data.  As it is, it’s a middling episode and a poor showing for something Data-centric; I give it 5 out of 10.
Episode 26: Redemption (Part 1)
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
Captain Picard and the Enterprise are asked to attend the installation of Gowron as the Leader of the Klingon High Council, as it is Picard’s final duty as the Arbiter of Succession. Gowron intercepts the Enterprise en route and informs Picard that the House of Duras will challenge Gowron's position, which may lead to a Klingon civil war. Picard states he cannot intervene beyond his role as arbiter, and asks Worf to escort Gowron to the transporter room. There, Worf informs Gowron of the truth about his discommendation; Gowron thanks Worf for killing Duras, but explains that he cannot clear Worf’s name because he needs the support of the council, many of whom are loyal to Duras. Worf then requests a leave of absence from Picard to visit his brother, Kurn, who controls a small fleet of Birds of Prey, and to urges him to back Gowron. Worf plans to use this support as leverage so that once installed as the Leader, Gowron can reinstate their family name.
Interrupting the ceremony, the Duras sisters present their deceased brother's illegitimate son, Toral, who has the lineage to challenge Gowron. Picard is called on to determine Toral's candidacy. Relying on Klingon law, Picard comes to the conclusion that Toral is too inexperienced to be Leader, and secures Gowron's candidacy. This, however, prompts a majority of the council members to abandon Gowron. Gowron returns to his ship to meet with Worf, who offers his brother's fleet's support in exchange for the return of his family name to honor. Gowron initially refuses, but they are attacked by two ships loyal to the House of Duras. Worf and the arrival of Kurn's fleet dispatch the attackers. Picard completes the rite and installs Gowron as Leader; Gowron restores Worf's family honor.
Gowron and the Enterprise crew learn that the Duras sisters are assembling a fleet to incite a civil war. As the Federation cannot get involved in internal affairs of the Klingon Empire, Worf resigns his commission from Starfleet to assist Gowron and Kurn. As the Enterprise evacuates the area before fighting begins, Toral and the Duras sisters consider Picard a coward, but their Romulan ally, a woman bearing an uncanny resemblance to the late Tasha Yar, emerges from the shadows and warns them that Picard may return.
Review:
Apparently, this episode was originally planned as the season 3 cliff-hanger finale, but had to be delayed because those working on the show who wanted this episode really had to fight for it.  Apparently, Gene Roddenberry didn’t want to do any kind of war stories, even if that war was internal to the Klingons and not something the Federation got involved in.  Granted, I don’t think this episode could be as good as it is without everything leading up to it, and part of that groundwork lays here in the fourth season as well as the third and second.  Nevertheless, it seems that once again Roddenberry was taking his idealism one step too far, and I’m guessing him having to step back from production of the show due to increasingly ill health around this time was the only reason we got this episode.
Being only one part of a larger story, of course, the episode loses out a little for not being quite as self-contained as it otherwise would be as a one-part episode.  However, it delivers a lot for part 1 of a two-part narrative; we finally see Worf get his discommendation lifted and Gowron take command of the Klingon Empire, only to then see Worf resign his commission when Picard won’t wade into the civil war, even though we all know by now Picard should realise it’s not even remotely an all-Klingon affair.  Picard and Worf are well aware that the Duras family are thick as thieves with the Romulans, and they’ve had the recent events of ‘The Mind’s Eye’ to illustrate to them that dividing the Federation and Klingon Empire is high on their agenda.  Surely Picard should have been able to put 2 and 2 together in this part and sided with Gowron outright, rather than appearing to cling to the Prime Directive.
This is where TNG, and Trek as a whole, falls down a little; it can’t seem to come up with a consistent approach to the Prime Directive.  Some episodes it gets broken, others it gets adhered to, and at times you’ll get a non-adherence for a situation that in a later or earlier episode saw the rule being upheld. Back in season 1, Picard was willing to dare the wrath of the Edo’s ‘god’ to save Wesley Crusher from execution, but in this episode, Picard won’t act to save Worf when Gowron’s ship gets fired upon. Both times someone from the Enterprise was in danger, so surely Picard should take the same actions, but he doesn’t. I can’t tell if this meant to be a follow-on from ‘The Drumhead’ and they stupidly cut out some exposition where Picard says ‘we have to be extra careful now to avoid another Satie-style witch-hunt’, or if it’s just a lack of attention to continuity.
For me, this episode really relies on Worf and Gowron to carry it, as Picard’s so-called ‘tightrope walking’ just makes him look decidedly unheroic and not a little ruthless.  Honestly, this episode would have benefited from a more Kirk-ian/Sisko-esque style of captain.  Overall, I give it 7 out of 10.

“God, Dustin, if you don’t get out of that bathroom in the next five minutes I’m literally going to kill you!” You screamed, slamming your fists on the wooden door for the thousandth time this morning.
“Relax, (Y/N), I’m almost finished! God you’re so annoying!” Your little brother, Dustin, yelled back. You groaned loudly and stomped back to your room, desperately needing to finish blow drying your hair before the party.
You heard the bathroom door open, and Dustin walking over to your room. He popped in your doorway with a devilish grin, his hair slicked back with hairspray.
“Bathrooms all yours, sis. Make sure you wear that one red lipstick, I think Steve will love it,” Dustin said, winking at you.
“Ew, Dustin. How many times do I have to tell you, me and Steve will never happen. Get over it. We’ve hated each other since middle school, and that’s not gonna change!” You stood up quickly and stomped to the bathroom, Dustin following behind you, frowning.
“C’mon! Give him a chance, (Y/N)! He’s a good kid!” Dustin has been pleading for you and Steve to date since the first time they fought Dart together. Dustin saw Steve as an older brother, and if you two ended up together, Steve would literally be his brother (in law). That was Dustin’s dream- and he reminded you of it every day.
“Jesus, you are so annoying. Why don’t you just shut up and make sure you have Wills’s gift ready!” You slammed the bathroom door in Dustin’s face, making sure to lock it so he wouldn’t barge in. You took a few deep breaths, trying to ground yourself from screaming out of frustration. You plugged your hair dryer on and began styling your hair, using the noise of the machine to drown out your frustration.
You had never really liked Steve, but it became especially frustrating when he decided to informally adopt your brother. Dustin thought the kid was a god, and that did not help Steve’s already overbearing confidence. You understood that Dustin only had you and his mom, and he needed a male role model, but you wished it was anyone but him.
You and Steve had a long- and very negative- history. You guys used to be friends, way back in the day, when life was simple. But that all came to a firey halt in seventh grade. You had a huge crush on one of Steve’s friends, Tommy, and you made the mistake of spilling that to Steve.
Steve took it upon himself to tell Tommy, and they apparently though it was hilarious. You hadn’t really developed yet, so you weren’t as ‘pretty’ as the other girls in your grade. Even though, let’s face it, it was seventh grade, and no one was attractive. But your self confidence was especially low, so when Steve apparently dared Tommy to fake ask you out in front of the whole school- you were crushed. And rightfully, you have never forgiven him.
It haunted you all the way up until you graduated. People never seemed to forget, and every one in a while you’d get reminded of the most humiliating day of your life. And it was even worse having to see the man who orchestrated the event around all the time. You never told Dustin about it, because you knew he looked up to Steve, and you didn’t want to take that away from him. But it was hard when you constantly had to hear how amazing he was.
You were feeling yourself get worked up just thinking about it, your breathing get quicker and your cheeks getting hot with stress. You tried to shake the memory out of your head, tousling your curls as you moved. You put a light lipstick on, double checked yourself in the mirror, and headed out of the bathroom. Dustin was waiting eagerly with a poorly wrapped gift in his bedroom.
“I got Will this super cool new edition of D&D! He’s gonna freak,” Dustin said excitedly, hoping up from his bed and following you down the stairs.
“Super happy for you nerds,” you groaned, grabbing your purse from the kitchen counter and rustling around for you keys.
“You’re gonna regret being so mean to me one day when I’m super rich.” Dustin raised his eyebrows at you, and you just rolled your eyes, walking out the front door to your car.
“You’re gonna regret being such a brat when I sacrifice you to the demodogs,” you said, laughing as you unlocked your car.
“That is not funny! Don’t joke about that!”
“Oh, relax Dustin, don’t go crying to Steve about it.” You hopped into your drivers seat and waited for Dustin to get buckled up before starting your car. He was excitedly fiddling with the bow on his gift, hoping that no one else got Will the same gift.
“I still don’t understand why you hate Steve so much, anyways,” Dustin mumbled, leaning his head against your car window.
“I’ve told you a million times, we just have a history, okay. It’s none of your business,” you snapped, raising your voice at him. “Besides, I’m going on another date with Andrew this weekend.”
“Ughhhhh,” Dustin groaned, rolling his eyes obnoxiously. “That guy is seriously the worst, (Y/N). He is super boring, his hair sucks, and he doesn’t know anything about the upside down. You can’t actually date a guy who doesn’t know what you’ve seen!”
“I don’t care about his hair, Dustin! That’s not a priority to me!”
“Well, it should be, okay? I don’t want my nieces and nephews having dweeb hair.”
“Don’t talk about my future children like that, idiot.” You punched Dustin lightly on the shoulder, and he screamed loudly, clearly faking pain to try and get on your nerves. You just pushed him again, and continued driving to Wills. The rest of your drive was spent listening to Dustin tell you about the new rules of his game, and you trying your best to pretend you were interested.
When you finally got to Wills, you recognized Steve’s car and instantly felt nauseous. You really did not want to spend time with him, but you also knew Joyce was excited to see you today, and you couldn’t let her down. You parked your car grudgingly and took a few moments before getting out. Dustin had already ran inside to his friends, showing off his wrapped gift.
You walked into the house quietly, not wanting to distract anyone from the birthday celebrations. Joyce ran to you, excitement on her face, and greeted you with a warm hug.
“(Y/N)! It’s so good to see you, you look beautiful,” she said, cupping your face in her hands and looking at your outfit.
“Sorry we’re late, Dustin is a brat and takes forever to get ready,” you responded, rolling your eyes and giggling a bit.
“There’s drinks and food in the kitchen, help yourself. Everyone else is scattered around somewhere, I’m sure you’ll find them!” She kissed you on the cheek before walking away and finding her son. You walked over to the kitchen, hoping to get a few seconds of peace and quiet. To your disdain, you were greeted by Steve, standing alone and pouring himself a drink.
“Hey, sorry if I’m in your way,” he mumbled, moving from the counter and spilling his drink on himself a bit.
“It’s fine, I’m just gonna grab a beer and go say hi to the kids, anyways,” you responded, pulling a cold bottle out of a cooler. You tried to twist it, but couldn’t manage to get the cap off.
“Can I help?” Steve asked, reaching out to take the bottle from you. You handed it to him without saying a word, and he took the bottle to his lips and bit the cap off with his teeth.
“Jesus,” you cringed, the thought of that against your teeth making you shiver.
“Little party trick I learned back in high school, I forgot some people get freaked out by it,” he laughed, handing you the bottle. You took a big swig, realizing Steve’s lips had just touched the mouth of your bottle. The thought made you a little uncomfortable, thinking about his lips on yours. He did have beautiful lips though, soft and pillowy. And he was always wearing this vanilla chapstick- you figured he kisses would taste like a milkshake.
Why the fuck are you thinking about kissing Steve? God, Dustin has really got in your head. You thanked Steve and walked out of the kitchen before your brain could dive any deeper into those thoughts.
The living room was packed with all the kids, eating chips and drinking soda. They were laughing over something Mike had said, and you smiled at Dustin, seeing him so happy made you warm inside. He had been through a lot- they all had- but seeing them all here, laughing and playing like kids are supposed to do, it made you feel good.
“(Y/N)!” Max yelled, running up to you and giving you a tight hug. El quickly followed her and hugged you as well.
“You two look absolutely gorgeous- new outfits?” You asked, tugging a bit on Max’s new shirt.
“We went to the mall this weekend!” El responded, putting her hands on her hips and posing for you. You laughed at the two girls, happy to see them enjoying things. You had felt a need to protect them, especially, knowing how hard it is for girls at that age.
“Could you teach me how to curl my hair later?” El asked, running her hand through your soft curls.
“Of course, lady. I think you’d look gorgeous!”
Mike had yelled at them to come see something, and they said they’d talk to you later, before running off back to their friends. Nancy and Jonathan were hanging on the couch, watching Will and the kids having the times of their life. You sat down next to her, making small talk with them for a few minutes before Joyce walked into the room.
“Alright, I have to run up to town and pick up the pizzas. Are you guys all good here for a bit?” She asked, keys in hand. She looked at you and Nancy, a look that said ‘If anything happens, I’m blaming you two, since you’re clearly the most responsible ones here besides myself.’
“We’ll take care of them, Joyce. No worries,” you responded, smiling kindly at her, letting her know you wouldn’t let anything happen to anyone. She smiled back, and headed out the door.
“Alright, now the real party starts!” Lucas yelled the minute Joyce closed and locked the door.
“Woah- woah. What are you talking about?” Nancy asked, standing up quickly and putting on her mom voice.
“Oh relax, Nance. Just a friendly game of truth or dare,” Mike responded, raising his eyebrows at the group around you. “And you all have to play, too,” he said, looking at you, Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve, who was now standing behind you.
“No, no. We’re just here to supervise, we’re not playing any games,” Jonathan responded in a stern voice.
“Please!! It’s my birthday!” Will whined, making a fake pouty face to try and get you all to feel bad for him.
“What’s the harm, right? They’re just kids,” Nancy said, putting a hand on Jonathan’s shoulder.
“You shouldn’t trust any of them- they’re evil geniuses. One of them even has super powers!” Steve said jokingly, eyeing El and making her laugh.
“Fine, we’ll play for a bit, but everything stays PG, got it?” You said, crossing your arms and the group and raising your eyebrows. They all nodded in agreement, smiling at each other, happy that you all agreed.
“Okay, first things first, everyone write your name down on a piece of paper and put it in this bowl,” Lucas instructed, pointing to a small blue bowl that was sitting in the center of the coffee table. You all did as you were told, passing around a pen and notepad until every name had been put in the bowl.
“Then, we’ll go around in a circle and pick a name, so it’s not biased. The person you picked gets to give you your truth or dare,” Mike quickly said, shaking the blue bowl around with his hand.
“Sounds easy enough,” Jonathan answered, sitting forward in the couch.
“And once everyone goes, you put the names back in the bowl and start again!”
Everyone nodded in understanding, the older group just wanting to get this over with. You sighed loudly, waiting for someone to start. Steve came and sat next to you, his knee slightly touching yours and you all squished on the couch together. You felt a heat growing as his skin touched yours, wanting so desperately to move away, but feeling physically unable too.
“I’ll start!” Max said, happily, pulling a name out of the hat. She giggled a little when she read the name of the piece of paper. “Lucas!”
“Alright, truth or dare?” He asked, jokingly making faces at her and making her laugh.
“Dare, obviously!”
“Alright...” he said, thinking intently on what to do. He looked over to the kitchen and smiled devilishly. “I dare you to eat a spoonful of mustard!”
“You know I hate mustard, you ass hole!” She crossed her arms and pouted at him.
“Exactly. And you have to do it- a dares a dare!” Lucas looked around for approval from the other guys, who were all nodding in agreement.
“Fine!” She responded angrily, standing up and walking towards the kitchen. She came back a few moments later with a spoon piled high with mustard. The though even made you a little queasy. She looked at Lucas with a smile, before shoving the spoon in her mouth and swallowing.
“Ewwww!” The kids all said in unison, looking away from her as she did it.
“Oh god, it’s so gross. Someone get me water!” She yelled, reaching out around her for a drink. Steve handed her his water bottle, and she chugged it with a disgusted look her face. The kids were laughing in hysterics as she struggled to get the taste out of her mouth.
“You guys are evil!” Steve said, laughing as he shook his head in shock.
“God, I am so going to get you back for that, Sinclair,” Max said, her face still scrunched in disgust.
“Steve, your turn,” Mike said, pushing the bowl towards him.
“Oh god. I am not letting any of you little shits make me eat anything gross, got it? I’m an adult!” He said, pulling a piece of paper out of the bowl. He looked at it and groaned, rolling his eyes. “I’m in for it now. I picked Dustin.”
“Hell yeah!” Dustin said, excitement glowing on his face.
“I’m picking truth, because I especially do not trust you, Henderson!” Steve laughed, sitting back and crossing his arms.
“Oh come on! Don’t be a pussy! It’s Wills birthday, have a little fun for his sake. Pick dare!” Dustin looked at Steve seriously, widening his eyes at him. Steve sighed and shook his head.
“Alright, fine. But be real careful with what you say next, kid,” he laughed.
“Easy. Seven minutes in heaven- you and my sister.”
You looked at Dustin, shock and embarrassment running through you. You felt your cheeks heat up, you knew you were turning a bright red. You looked over at Steve, who was also clearly uncomfortable.
“Absolutely not, we said to keep it PG!” You yelled, crossing your arms and shaking your head at Dustin.
“Yeah, for us! You guys are adults! Don’t act like you haven’t kissed before!” Dustin said back.
“I am not kissing Steve!” You yelled, floored with embarrassment.
“A dare is a dare!” El said, shrugging at you. You looked at her, disappointed that she wasn’t on your side.
“Cmon, lets just do it to please the kids. It doesn’t have to mean anything,” Steve whispered to you, the scent of vanilla chapstick flooding your senses.
“Fine. Dustin, I hope you know I am going to murder you later,” you said, standing up and walking down the hall to the bathroom. Steve followed suit, and you heard the kids giggling as the two of you went off to ‘Heaven’.
Steve came into the bathroom behind you, shutting the door as he did so. You wouldn’t look at him at first, too embarrassed to make eye contact. Finally, he put a hand on your shoulder, causing you to jump a little in shock.
“Sorry, just wanted to make sure you’re okay, you seem upset,” Steve said, quickly removing his hand.
“I am. This is ridiculous. I can’t go a day without Dustin shoving the idea of me and you together down my throat,” you muttered, sitting down on the sink counter and crossing your arms.
“I’m sorry. I know it sucks, but he’s just a kid. He doesn’t mean anything by it,” Steve said, pushing his hair out of his face.
“I know, but he doesn’t know about everything that happened between us, and I don’t want him to hate you so I won’t tell him.”
“What happened between us?” Steve asked, laughing a bit awkwardly. He looked genuinely confused, which offended you, because that meant he didn’t remember what he did.
“Are you serious? Seventh grade, you telling Tommy to ask me out in lunch as a joke? That ruined my whole life, Steve.”
“Woah, woah, woah. I didn’t tell Tommy to do anything like that. I didn’t even know about it until it was happening!” Steve responded, clearly upset about the accusations you were making.
“What do you mean Steve? Don’t lie to me! Mark told me it was all your idea!” You pouted at Steve, confused and upset, feeling yourself tearing up as you were recalling the event.
“Mark is a lying sack of shit, (Y/N)! He told you that to save his own ass! It was all him and Tommy- I swear to God!” Steve was defensive, pacing up and down the bathroom in frustration.
“But I told you about having a crush on Tommy, not Mark!”
“Okay, that part was my fault. The thing is, I sort of had a crush on you back then, and Mark knew... but when you told me about Tommy, I got upset and told Mark... but I swear, if I knew he was planning that I would’ve never told him! I didn’t mean to hurt you!” Steve was upset, his face red and his eyes watery as he pleaded for you to believe him.
“You really had a crush on me?” You asked, completely blown away by the fact that he even noticed you back then.
“I kind of always have... I always tried to talk to you in high school but you never gave me the time of day. Now I know why,” he said, sounding defeated and broken. He sat down on the edge of the bathtub, shaking his head and staring at the floor.
“Honestly, Steve... I had no idea. I thought... all this time...” you looked at the man sitting in front of you, falling apart in front of you. You sat down next to him, putting a hand on his, trying to comfort him.
“I’m so sorry... I never meant to hurt you... you didn’t deserve that...” Steve mumbled.
“I’m sorry too, I just believed him and I never let you explain... I’ve been such an ass to you for years for something that wasn’t even your fault!” You started laughing, an uncontrollable giggle that was just rolling through you. For years you had pushed away a sweet, funny, and handsome guy for a lie someone told you when you were 13. Unbelievable.
“Why are you laughing?” Steve said, also starting to laugh himself.
“Because, I just can’t believe this. And it took a dumb game of truth or dare to find this out... I’m just shocked, I guess.” You stood up, wiping tears from your face as you continued to giggle. Steve stood up too, quickly wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you towards him. He kissed you, the kind of kiss that he had been waiting for all his life. A kiss that you felt everywhere in your body, his lips moving intricately with yours. And you were right, kissing him was like tasting a vanilla milkshake.
Steve’s hands were locked on your waist, pulling your body closer to him every second. You had wrapped your hands in his hair, the soft locks melting through your fingers. He finally let go of your waist and his hands trailed down to your butt, squeezing slightly. You giggled a bit at his touch, and felt him smile through your kisses.
“Times up- OH SHIT!” You heard your brother yell after he swung open the door. You and Steve quickly jumped away from each other and stared at Dustin. “IT WORKED!” He yelled, running down the hallway to the living room.
“Dustin!” You yelled, running after him. Steve followed close behind.
“They kissed! It worked!” He exclaimed to the group, a proud toothless smile plastered across his young face.
“Finally!” Max said, shaking her head and laughing.
“Was this.... did you guys do all of this just to get me and Steve to talk?” You asked in shock.
“You little shits are unbelievable!” Steve yelled, hands on his hips.
“It worked though... didn’t it? You like her, she likes you... I was right!” Dustin was ecstatic, and you felt yourself blushing again as you looked over to Steve.
“I mean... I guess I do kinda like you...” You avoided his eyes, but he took your hand in his and smiled at you.
“Yeah, I kinda like you, too.” He squeezed your hand tightly, his smile making you melt, thinking about kissing him again.
“But you’re still dead, Dusty, you understand that? I’m going to kill you for real this time!” You laughed, ruffling Dustin’s hair and shaking your head at the kids. As much as Dustin annoyed you, he really did want you to be happy. And he was right on this one.

After Party
Tumblr media
Summary: Delaney gets drunk at a after party and tells her crush how she feels. Word Count: 1.6k Fic Playlist: Click Here A/N: *REPOST FROM MY OLD BLOG* This is like, literally the only steve fic I have ever written lol
Tumblr media
“Laney...DELANEY.” I snapped out of my trance looking over at my friend Jonathan.
“What?” I asked resting my chin on my hand. “You’re staring at him again” He mumbled
“Am not.”  I let my gaze shift from my friend Steve who was across the courtyard to Jonathan giving him a small smile.
“Why don’t you.. I don’t know, tell him how you feel?” It’s not like you haven’t known the guy your entire life.” Jonathan said
I sighed dropping my head to the table.
“Because, I doubt the feelings are mutual. I mean look at him he’s beautiful and I’m-” “Also beautiful. Delaney you won’t ever know until you try”
I let another groan out standing up. “I have to get to practice before the game. Are you and Nancy coming to the party tonight?”
Jonathan grimaced forcing me to hold my hands up in defense “You don't have to come if we lose but if we win, I better see you there.”
“Fine. I’ll drop Will and my mom off after the game and come. But only if we win” he said  making me smile.
“I mean, as captain of the girls lacrosse team, I can assure you that it’ll be a win plus I’ll need you there for emotional support in case I talk to Steve about how I feel and it gets awkward.” I said with a wink walking off towards the practice field.

I walked into the party as the crowd starting cheering and chanting my name. I waved to some of my friends while high-fiving others making my way to the drink table.
“Hey beautiful. You were awesome out there tonight getting the game winning point. Ready for that date yet? A king needs his queen you know” Billy Hargrove said leaning on the counter next to me.
“Eww. You wish Hargrove. Isn't it about time to go wax your mom’s back hair?.” He rolled his eyes pushing off the counter mumbling something- more than likely calling me a bitch before walking away.
I grabbed a cup dunking it into the red liquid as I watched Steve walk up beside me. “Delaney Henderson! Look at you being all social tonight.” He said making me laugh.
“Well, what kind of game winning lacrosse captain would I be if I didn’t show up to the after party?”
He chuckled grabbing my hand. “Let’s go dance” he pulled me out to the living room as ‘welcome to the jungle’ by Guns N’ Roses blared through the speakers.
Everyone started cheering as Jimmy, the kid that wore the Tiger mascot costume jumped on the counter and let out a pitiful roar starting another round of people chanting my name.
I threw my fist up in the air a few times as I continued to dance with Steve.
Steve and I took turns refilling our drinks and dancing through the course of the night. We both would take occasional pee breaks and at some point I ran into Jonathan and Nancy while going to the bathroom.
“Heeeeeey.” I squeaked leaning on the wall by them. “Having fun with Steve?” Jonathan asked a smirk growing on his face.
“Yes! I always have fun with him! I really have to pee. Will you take me home later?” I asked in one breath making him laugh.
“Yes I will. We’ll find you when we’re ready to leave”
I high-fived Nancy after she congratulated me the team’s win.
Tumblr media
I walked out of the bathroom spotting Jonathan sitting on the steps on the front porch. I walked outside plopping down next to him
“Remember earlier how you told me I should tell Steve how I feel? I figured out exactly what I wanted to say. I just thought of it when I was peeing. ready?” I cleared my throat
“You’re so beautiful. I want to play connect the dots with my tongue and your freckles. Like I think God chiseled you from diamonds and bestowed you on the earth just for me to gawk at,” I said as I drank what was left in my cup.
I had more than enough to drink so I had decided that that was my last one.
“That’s good right? Jonathan, I think I’m a little drunk. Your hair looks nicer than normal what did you do to it? You know I also probably shouldn't tell Steve I want to stick my tongue on him. But I digress, back to telling Steve,” I cleared my throat again
“-I have loved you since that one day in in fifth grade when Tommy H stuck gum in my hair and you tried beating him up. Remember? He ended up kicking your ass and my mom had to cut all of my hair off making me like a boy. You told me I looked pretty and you liked my hair while everyone else made fun of me. I knew then mmmhmm. I knew then that I loved you.” I said laying my head on Jonathan’s shoulder letting out a small hick up.
“Should I tell him how I sometimes practice signing my name with his last name? Nah. probably should leave that one out too.” I hiccuped again with a groan.
“Jonathan can we leave now. I don’t feel good and it’s probably best that I don’t tell Steve how I feel being as drunk as I am and where’s Nancy?”
I heard a laugh as a jacket was draped over my shoulders and I was scooped up bridal style. I looked up at Jonathan smiling “You’re such a good friend.” I mumbled as my eyes grew heavy and I drifted off to sleep.
Tumblr media
“Thanks for getting me home Saturday night” I mumbled sitting on the floor of the dark room.
“I didn’t take you home... I thought Steve did.” He said looking at me concerned. I vaguely remember talking to Jonathan about Steve that night and having a lot to drink.
“I sat out on the porch Saturday trying to sober up and we talked about Steve and then I asked you to take me home?” I said dreading what I knew actually happened.
I had mistaken Steve for Jonathan so everything I said was to Steve.
“You were outside with Steve. I figured you told him how you felt and you two left together” Jonathan said
I groaned laying on the floor bringing my knees up to my chest.  “I thought that was you not Steve. I drunkenly told him I wanted to lick his neck freckles. I can’t be seen in Hawkins anymore I have to leave and move as far away as I can”
Jonathan try hiding his laugh at my humiliation. “Well at least he know how you feel now”
“Shut up. You are in no way helping me Byers. My locker is next to his. What even is my life right now?” I said making Jonathan lose all control of his composure.
“I’m so happy you find amusement in this. I’ll be back in here during lunch hiding if you need me”
Tumblr media
I stood at my locker trying to pretend I didn’t notice Steve walking my way.
“So… Henderson..we have some stuff we need to talk about.” He said leaning against the lockers next to my own.
I could feel my cheeks grow warm. I looked over at him nervously.
“Do we? I’m embarrassed enough over this”
He ran his fingers in his hair smiling “So fifth grade huh?”
I groaned hitting my head on my locker door. Neither Jonathan nor Steve will ever let me live this down.
“Hey! Stop that! Delaney. seriously, it was cute.”
“You thought drunk me droning on about how much I love you was cute?” I asked looking up at him.
“Yeah.. I mean, we’ve always be friends even more so now that Dustin thinks of me as a brother or role model or whatever. Why haven't you ever said anything to me? Would have saved me the year I wasted with Nancy. I’ve always had a thing for you too, I just never thought you’d think of me in that way.”
“I guess we both had the same fear of ruining a good friendship by confessing our feelings towards each other.” I said as Steve leaned in closer to me.
“I guess so… but now that we’ve talked about it and our feelings are out in the open it’s okay for me to do this”
Steve leaned in pressing his lips to mine softly. My heart fluttered as he put his hand on my hip pulling me closer to him deepening the kiss.
We broke apart as the bell started to ring both smiling at each other.
I grabbed my books shutting my locker as Steve intertwined our fingers leaning over planting another kiss on lips.
“Let’s go cutie. We’re going to be late for class”
Tumblr media
“That’s not what I asked. STEVE. Do. You. Feel. The. Electricity.” Dustin yelled at Steve.
“Dustin. Get out of my room!” I said pushing him out and shutting the door.
Dustin had caught us making out on the couch and he followed us to my room yelling at Steve like the idiot he is.
“What the hell is he talking about?” I asked looking at Steve as my door flung open.
“Listen here shithead. She’s my sister and I know she likes you because she talks about you in her diary. A lot. And I just-” I cut him off by taking his hat and smacking him in the face with it.
“Out. Now. or I’ll tell all your little friends what really happened at the Christmas party.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Try me.”
Dustin scrunched his nose looking between Steve and I pointing his index finger from his eyes to Steve.
“Goodbye Dustin.” I said shutting my door and locking it.
“Where were we?” I asked walking back over to Steve. He pulled me closer to him kissing my nose.
“I believe you were about to lick my freckles?” I groaned dropping my head to his shoulder. “You’re going to hold this against me forever aren’t you.”
“You bet I am.”

First drawing - Johnathan’s ref sheet
second drawing - Height chart of the siblings, Jokey and Chloe are fraternal twins
DO NOT REPOST!!!
Name: Johnathan Nicknames: John Gender: Male Occupation: Spear making Demon type/species: Angel of Loyalty Likes: Following the rules, being organised, clean environments, dressing smartly, french culture, music, the violin, reading, the colours red and pink Dislikes: chaos, pranks, messy environments, dirt, rock music, women being treated wrongly, greasy foods (This May be changed) Died in: 2011 Former life: Being the eldest of his siblings Johnathan was expected to be a good role model for his younger siblings, he was polite, mature, well mannered and specialised in many musical instruments and sports. He left home to study further education in France, and Chloe soon followed his lead to study at a private girls school. He is told by his sister of his brothers death and how he got kicked out of the home, when his sister dies of suicide Johnathan is left alone. He looses contact with his family and focuses solidly on his work life, paper after papers - he dies when someone broke into his house and robbed him, Johnathan went down to investigate the noise and was shot five times in the chest. Powers: Is excellent at sword fighting, good at weapon crafting, is very resourceful, tending to wounds, aerodynamics General bio: Everyone was surprised when Jokey introduces Jonathan as his older brother, Willem is still trying to process the fact that they’re related. Jonathan is very different from his two younger siblings, he is much more matured compared to his younger brother Jokey, who is far more extroverted and bouncy then he. Jonathan prefers to keep to himself and his work, he’s very focused on making his time worth while and spending it tending to important things, rather then pulling silly pranks and telling cheesy jokes. Jonathan also leans more towards the french side in the family tree, he along with his little sister Chloe both show interest in french clothing and cooking. When he was alive he left him early to study away in France, after hearing word of his younger brothers death Jonathan trains in fencing in hopes that he can protect his sister. He is a very skilled fighter in swords and spears, but after his little sister committed suicide, he was broken, crushed. He becomes completely focused on work after his siblings deaths, he looses contact with her parents over the time he works and he soon stops talking with any close family. Now in heaven Jonathan is still a bit of a work a holic, he much rather prefers to keep to himself then socialise, he’ll only hold a decent conversation with Chloe. He spends his days crafting swords and exterminator spears along side other angels, he graduated from Charleston’s training lessons as he is fully capable of defending himself and others. Relationship: Out of his two siblings Jonathan is closer to his little sister Chloe, due to them both sharing a love for french culture and fashion. When they where alive Johnathan tried to keep his little sister in the right pathway to becoming a propped young lady, he wasn’t approving of his younger brother Jokey stirring their sister away from that path. It’s probably thanks to Johnathan and their parents that Chloe turned out as polite and generous as she is, the two get along well and Johnathan is willing to be weak around her. Himself and Jokey have a more...strained relationship, being the eldest child Johnathan had a lot of responsibilities pushed onto him by his parents, he grows up viewing his brothers energetic and bouncy behaviour as silly. Hey have there moments when they get along though, deep down Johnathan still loves his little brother. Thinks that Willem’s lazy habits are not a good example for his little sister of a good trait in a lover for his little brother. Johnathan was raised with manners, style, and grew up to be very mature, Willem is lazy, slacks off on work and dresses in baggy clothing - things that Johnathan is not used too. Johnathan is a bit cautious of Willem’s demon side, like most angels, but for now he will allow Willem to be with his brother. He’s learnt that Willem seems far too lazy to cheat on his brother. Johnathan is the type of older brother that would want his siblings to be with someone perfect, someone that could truly love them. As much of a stick in the mud he is, he does care for his siblings happiness....which is why he was very surprised when Jokey just causally brought up that Chloe liked Nathanial. His sister liking that hot headed brute?! Surely not! Haha! How wrong he was, Chloe does indeed have a crush on him...and Johnathan was genuinely at a loss for words. He kinda went ‘Chloe you can’t be serious’ right to her face - Johnathan does NOT think Nathanial is a good role model or lover to his sister, he has promised Nathanial he shall see to it that he will personally snap his wrists and pin them to a door if he makes his sister cry....(But Johnathan is only a wee bit taller then his siblings so Nathanial could defeated him with a gentle hand holding him back-) Johnathan isn’t sure how exactly he ended up being friends with Maylen (also known as Bubbles) of all people. She was so...chatty, all the time. Constantly! At some point Maylen asks him to go to the lake with her, loosen up a bit! Get away from work! Johnathan of course turns down the offer, but oh no it didn’t stop there! Maylen kept on asking and asking and asking until one day Johnathan finally agrees, to make her stop jabbering. And then from that point on the two sorta just stayed close, Johnathan will admit that she her company isn’t entirely unwanted. He begins to maybe enjoy her company just a teenie weenie little bit...maybe Nathanial/Maylen - @cosmic-artzz

i finally saw stranger things 3 and i have thoughts that i will break down by character ((they are not very deep thoughts, they are mostly love))
first, the kids
1. my beautiful son, will byers, for once did not have a hell ride of a season and got to smile a couple times. he took a bit of a back seat really, and i feel sorry for noah schnapp for all the ‘neck scratching’ memes he’ll be buried in now that it was basically his signature move for 8 episodes (and not even a particularly useful one) but anyway... the destruction of castle byers was one of the most heartbreaking scenes and i would have liked to see more fallout from it, but we can’t have everything. mike’s ‘it’s not my fault you don’t like girls’ line? eiiiish can we get some follow up in s4 please. (it might not be your fault mike but you’re involved lmao) so anyway. glad will got a breather season, but man when he was crying so much in the goodbye scene, i felt that. could not cope.
2. lucas!!!!!!!! my treasured son!!!! i love him so much. he was such a hero this season! he is always down to fight with his catapult and i adore him. i love what a terrible casanova he makes. i wish there had been some kind of glimpse of him looking after max after she watched her brother die, because that’s a complicated thing for those two. but s4 awaits. i would love to see lucas take a more central role in s4, incidentally. in terms of the boys, s1 was mike’s time to shine, s2 was will’s, s3 was arguably dustin since he got the most time away from the group? s4 lucas please and thank you
3. my angel daughter max, i love her, she’s so brave and brilliant, and she is such a good friend to el, and although billy-as-he-was didn’t deserve her, she was a good sister, too. i worry about her a lot. lucas and max better be the front and centre couple of s4, i swear. it’s their time. let them. i guess i was a little confused at first at how much max’s style changed between seasons, but i support her always, and her clothes now are so happy and cute. she’s adorable. now somebody please make sure she’s alright. where is her mom
4. dustin, light of my life, he is a good child and i am proud of him! i have always related to dustin’s position in the friend group lmao so to see him off with his own little crew was very adorable. i love him as both steve and robin’s child and steve and robin’s parent. he is so resourceful and i love that they finally utilised gaten’s angel voice! i was so glad suzie turned out to be real and plot-relevant (kinda), please can she come for a visit in s4? thank you.
5. eleven, my daughter, my small small child, she broke my heart so much this season and i am so proud of her for finding herself. her s4 arc of regaining her powers will be very interesting and i’m excited for her and joyce’s relationship to be developed more, because i love them both. i really appreciated them going for the angle of ‘eleven needs to exist outside of mike’, partly because the way they were behaving at the beginning of the season did seem to make sense for kids their age with a connection like theirs, and it is healthier for them to.... not. at least sometimes. el is so hardcore, i love how her dialogue is still written a little stilted while still letting her express herself. she had so many iconic lines. i can’t believe they took hop away from her. also i’m a little disappointed (but not surprised) that there was no kali.
6. mike, my child, my gangly and adorable son, he was a joy this season (even when he was whinging). you know what killed me? how TALL he was when he hugged his mother at the end, especially compared to the s1 scene after will’s “body” is found. logically i know that these are actors who are growing up but it feels like an assault every time they flashback to their tiny s1 selves, and mike is just a giant now. bless him. he is a good boy who is trying his best. i don’t really understand why he didn’t tell el what hopper had said much earlier, but he’s a silly teenage boy, so, you know. it’s like that.
7. erica my precious daughter, oh my goodness, i enjoyed her immensely. i’m so glad she’s properly part of the crew and is beginning to embrace the nerdy part of herself. icon. priah ferguson is an entire gemstone. when nancy etc graduate to the adult storylines and mike and co are the resident teens, erica will be the lynchpin of the new generation and i couldn’t be happier about that.
now, the teens
1. nancy was so iconic this year, DAMN. this girl never rests and i love her. i’m glad the romantic drama was minimised, just enough to keep them interesting but not so you really worried she was going to pingpong back to steve or anything silly like that. nancy is such a role model truly. she’s so brave. my life, when billy’s car was hurtling towards her and she just stayed shooting. that’s my girl. (also, she’s so gorgeous. i feel like 80s fashion happened mainly so that natalia dyer could recreate it)
2. STEVE my sweet sweet son. again, an icon. i can’t believe they actually kept him in that sailor suit the whole season. what a national treasure. when he slammed billy’s car! i cheered. i’m very proud of the person he has become and his friendship with robin is just adorable. so glad that they will be able to discuss pretty girls together now that they work at the arcade. also, maybe he could make it to the end of s4 without cutting up his face, but that’s probably too much to ask, isn’t it?
3. robin is my entire heart, i can’t even express how much i love this girl. she’s so clever and brave and wonderful and i can’t wait for her and will to share a scene (because cOME ON the solidarity!!!). i love her sarcasm and wit, and how she just jumps into the madness and gets stuff done. a queen. welcome to the family, robin.
4. jonathan my boyyyyy, he was lovely this season, i was so proud of him when he took the situation in hand with el’s injury (even if she ended up doing the surgery herself!) i am excited for him to be el’s big brother as well as will’s (side note: el and will are sure to be the cutest siblings) and hopefully he and nancy can continue to navigate the stormy sea of being the teen flagship without too much on-again-off-again. we get it, they’re meant for each other. loved their moment with the scar at the end.
5. oh, billy. i will admit, i felt bad for him a couple of times, and he certainly suffered enough, not that his treatment of lucas in s2 will ever be excused. dacre montgomery really gives the most, which makes billy weirdly watchable. i will never understand why they chose to bring back the karen wheeler stuff, brrrrrrr, but, yeah. i’m glad they didn’t exactly “redeem” him, but managed to kill him off while still adding depth. (he tried to save el and good on him for that, but in the end it was joyce who stopped the mindflayer, so).
aaand the adults!
1. murray was a complete delight, and i was thrilled to have him along for the ride. i’m heartbroken that murray/alexei will not rise, because that had potential.
2. joyce was wonderful and hilarious and brave and heartbreaking and perfect, of course. i can’t believe they’ve now killed off BOTH her love interests (as far as she knows, anyway). that poor woman. i hope she can continue in her role of best mother ever, now that she has an extra traumatised child on her hands. joyce is the true mvp. the moral strength that woman has. the brains. the curiosity. she’s a way of life.
3. hopper, where do i start. i actually didn’t like him much at the start of the season. i get that he hasn’t had a teenager before, but he seemed to take a little too much delight in petrifying mike, especially since he knew how much it would genuinely hurt el. that seemed a bit extreme for the sake of not wanting to give a corny speech. but anyway. this man is a true trooper. so many fight scenes. and we’re supposed to assume he’s not actually dead, right? the post-credits scene in russia was almost entirely pointless (big deal, they got a demogorgon) apart from the line, ‘no, not the american’... i mean, surely that’s hopper? surely? murray is unaccounted for in the time jump, i suppose, but no way he was captured and not joyce. both or neither. man, imagine the reunion with el and joyce, if hopper really isn’t dead. i’m going with he’s not dead. we never saw any remains. kudos for still making his apparent demise pack a whole punch, though. that letter destroyed me.
other things:
1. the turning-people-into-goo stuff was so horrifying, how do you even go about creating those visuals
2. some of the fight scenes i kind of let happen without really watching, and just came back to see who was still upright by the end, how do people watch this stuff
3. joyce didn’t decorate her house :( in fact the magnets undecorated themselves, as a forerunner to the entire house being stripped.... wow....
4. mr clarke is an absolute beaut and i love the way he was used (although it was strange not to have dustin included!)
5. i love love love how this show operates, with different teams finding different parts of the mystery and piecing it together under fire. i love how none of them ever go, “hey, we should tell the other people who are usually involved in this stuff, chances are they’ve got themselves into it this time around.”
6. the byers’ dog is still unaccounted for

For longer than she cared to admit, Alexianna considered Daniel's comments regarding Oliver.
She could not comprehend how Daniel would welcome the man back into his life after he abandoned them when they needed a father. She thought to her counselling sessions, the ones specifically regarding the male influences and indeed role models in her life, or as was brutally honest, the severe lack of said role models. There was a correlation between her lack of father figure and her subsequent relationship with Jonathan in which she had accepted abusive and negative behaviour from him. It was not the sole reason, which she knew, but it was a notable part of the overall picture.
Tom, on more than one occasion, pointed out that Daniel was simply the polar opposite of her reaction to the situation, and in many ways, also understandable. He more than likely was hoping to make up for the lost relationship with his father during childhood. Both approaches, he stated diplomatically, were completely comprehensible and neither sibling was in any way wrong for their feelings on the matter.
Daniel spoke to her a bit with regards what he and Oliver discussed when they met up, Oliver, now living in York, went to Edinburgh when Daniel was off the ships to talk with his son. Alexianna listened to her brother but never said much on the matter. When Daniel pushed her for an answer as to whether she wished to speak to their father or not, Alexianna would find a way to change the topic of conversation with him and on mentioning Hampstead Hill, she would find a reason to cease speaking altogether.
Lily was no longer having the same issues with Shawn, thankfully, but she was still not overly happy with her daughter's teacher and neither was her teacher pleased with her and it was showing. It left Alexianna in something of a predicament, she wanted Lily to have the best education but she was terrified at what Oliver would expect in return. Then she thought of Tom's offer. In all honesty, of the two, she would be more open to Tom's proposal to pay than her father's as she knew that Tom was offering out of love for Lily and genuine concern for her wellbeing and love, Oliver's motives were anyone's guess as far as she was concerned.
She spoke with her counsellor regarding it in her next session. He delved into it all with her and attempted to assist her in uncovering what was bothering her so greatly in the situation. They both knew her father's lack of being there for her growing up was a pinnacle reason for her wariness to everything, but Mr Barrow also tried to see if there were other reasons for it, noting her anger at her father's remarrying, not because she held any ill against him for finding happiness but for the fact he chose a wife that specifically chose not to have children. She respected that was a personal choice for her stepmother, a term that her therapist used and caused her to shudder such were her preconceived notions of such a title, but it caused her to wonder if her father regretted being a father and made her feel rejected even further by him. It was hurtful enough that Oliver left them and never returned due to not wanting to deal with Marie but the idea he had never wanted children, that made her feel even more rejected by him and of course, behind it all, she worried for Lily.
Tom left for a week to deal with an event he was part of, leaving Alexianna to deal with her concerns, work and Lily, something she was becoming more comfortable and confident in. Even with the increased workload of her job and college course, Alexianna was finding it easier to do everything as a result of her dealing with her past and feeling better in herself as a person. She still had doubts, her scarred arm caused her to feel some self-conscious thoughts but overall, her achievements, her loving relationship with a man that allowed her to be her own person and respected her personal space and expected the same and help to raise Lily meant she was able to grow, both personally and as a mother. She always loved Lily with all of her heart but did not show it as much as she wanted to as she tried to learn how to love herself and express it. Her happier attitude transferred to her interactions with Lily also.
While going home from work on the bus, she looked out the window. Elena, a lovely English language student who needed a few hours work while she completed her course, had become Lily's new minder while Alexianna worked. Tom spent what time he could with her also but there was a need for someone else to pick up the times they could not and Elena was perfect since Rebecca moved to Manchester. She also taught a very eager Lily some Spanish, something Alexianna was delighted about. She spoke French and Latin as well as English and Welsh so she liked her daughter embracing foreign languages.
When she arrived home, she was attacked for hugs in the hallway. “Hey, Princess.”
“Hi Mommy.” Lily cuddled into her as she walked into the kitchen carrying her daughter in her arms. “I had a silly day today.”
“Tell me about it.” She smiled as she said a quick hello to Elena also.
“We went to the park.”
Alexianna knew that already, having signed a consent form for her daughter to be allowed do so. “And what did you see in the park?”
“Ducks.”
“Very exciting.”
“Can I tell Daddy?”
“I will contact him and see if he able to talk.” She smiled, taking out her phone, frowning at the cracked screen, having been in a slight disagree with gravitational pull. She texted Tom and left her phone on the counter as she took out the few groceries she had acquired also before thanking Elena for handing her some post. At first, she scanned them, some junk mail, a “to the occupier” from the council and finally a letter for “The parents of Lily D. Hughes” letter. Alexianna looked at the letter for a moment. It was a thick A4 size one but it was the postmark that gave it away. The stamp of the illustrious girl's school told her who sent it. Opening it, she wondered why it had arrived.
Just as she was about to remove the paperwork from the package, her phone rang.
“Mommy, Daddy is calling.” Lily chirped as Alexianna placed down the letter. She lifted her daughter onto the countertop and answered the phone, placing it to Lily's ear. “Daddy.” She giggled.
“Hello, Princess. You sound very happy.”
“I miss you, Daddy.”
“I miss you terribly too. I wish I was able to give you a big cuddle.” Tom's voice was sincere. “Tell me about your day.”
“We went to the park and we sawed ducks.” She informed him. “And we feeded them, but not bread acause that is not good for them, Daddy and I sawed doggies and they were chasing each other and we had so much fun.” She informed him.
“I am jealous.” Tom declared, earning giggles from Lily. “Are you excited for your birthday next week?”
“Yes.” Lily cheered loudly. “You'll be home, won't you Daddy?”
“I am home in two days, my beautiful girl.” He promised. “So do not fret, I will be there.”
“Yay!”
“Where's your Mum, Princess?”
“She's holding the phone to my ear and making sure that I don't fall from the counter, Daddy.” Lily informed him.
“Okay, Princess, I will send you a big hug and kiss through Baloo and I will just talk to Mummy for a minute, alright?”
"Okay, Daddy. Bye bye, I love you.”
“I love you too, Lily.” His smile was audible through the phone.
Alexianna let Lily off the counter before putting the phone to her ear. “Hey, Tom.”
“Darling, is everything alright?”
“I'm not sure.”
“Talk to me, Lexi. Is it therapy, work?”
“No, I just...I think Lily has just received another prospectus from Hampstead Hill.”
“You think?”
“I was opening it when you called, but yes, I think she has, it looks like one.”
“Open it and see.” Tom listened to the sound of paper moving around then silence. “Lexi?”
“I…”
“Lexi?”
“Dear Ms Hughes, we are delighted that your daughter, Lily Diana Hughes will be joining us in Hampstead Hill at the beginning of her reception year, this coming September. We thank you for choosing our school for your daughter's education and I can assure you, Hampstead Hill will endeavour to bring out the very best in your child. Please find enclosed….Did you do this?” There was no answer. “Tom, did you do this?”
“No... I...no, I had nothing to do with this.” Tom promised, slightly startled by what Alexianna had just read to him. “Do you think Oliver…?”
“Who else could have done it, Tom?” she challenged, her anger increasing. “I am going to kill Daniel.”
“Why?”
“How else would this have happened, Tom? Oliver shouldn't know her name, I...does he have my address?” She asked worriedly, rushing up the stairs to prevent Lily hearing such a conversation, not wanting the little girl to see her stress.
“Alexianna, I don't want to anger you, Darling, but I don't think him having your address requires such panic, he is not as bad as Jonathan.” Tom placated. “If you want nothing to do with him, it's not ideal, but it's not like he can walk up to the front door; you, Elena or I have to let him in, so don't fret, my Darling. Also, remember the school hàve your address, I was in contact with them, remember?”
“But...you gave your address.”
“I gave yours also, they needed it, so he could very well not know it.” He placated. “I think when you have settled slightly, you need to speak to Daniel.” He suggested.
“Yeah, I...I'm not sure about this, Tom. I don't want to owe Oliver for anything...I don't want anything to do with him.”
“We will talk to Daniel, and see what he says, alright?” Tom urged. “But for now, relax.”
“Tom…”
“Lexi, you are annoyed and you and I know that if you talk to Daniel now, you will get angry and you love your brother, you don't want to argue with him.”
“I don't want this. I don't want Oliver to pay for this.”
“Will I send him a reimbursement?” Tom offered.
“No because I don't want anyone paying this money for her.”
“Why not, Darling?”
“Because it's not fair on you, I am not going out with you to fund Lily, this relationship is uneven enough without…”
“Okay, I am going to have to stop you there, Lexi “ Tom stated calmly. “A relationship does not have to be fifty-fifty when one is in a different financial position to another. You give me so much, I cannot put into words my happiness when I am with you, and that little girl. Alexianna, I love you both so intensely and you both give me unconditional love and respect in return and to be honest, I feel unworthy. Your additions to my life have so much more than financial worth.”
“But I don't want money from you, I want you, I want our cuddles, our conversations, our intimacy, that sort of thing.”
“That is why I am so invested in this, Lexi, because you don't want money and other such things. But is why I am so willing to do this too, I want to help Lily achieve everything she can in life.”
Alexianna sighed, uncertain of what to say. She wanted nothing more than to have Lily have the best of everything, as most parents would, but uncertain that she could take it.

The Day of the Field Trip
The Day of Infamy
It was a bright, sunny morning at Gotham Academy. In the parking lot in front of the school, two long buses were pulled up, with a crowd of freshmen students and their parents milling about, preparing to board. As usual, Jonathan and Jervis were among the first of the faculty to arrive, standing in front of a bus and waiting for the others to show.
"Well, here we are, old friend," Jervis said, shuffling a bit. "Another year, another horrifying trip. How bad do you suppose it's going to be this time?"
Jonathan shrugged his bony shoulders. "Well, Kerr ain't here. That's a plus."
"I'm more worried about Dormouse," Jervis muttered. "He's been in such a mood about this trip the whole week. I'm half expecting he won't show up."
"Well, you'd be wrong," Jonathan said, pointing behind them. "Here he comes now."
Indeed, Edward and Ellen walked through the growing mob of people, Ellen wearing her knapsack on her back and shaking her head. "Do you have to wear socks with your sandals, Dad? You look like a dork!"
Edward sniffed. "Well, you know how I feel about bare feet!" The father and daughter came to a stop in front of Jonathan and Jervis, and Edward gave them a nod. "Gentlemen."
Jervis politely greeted him, while Jonathan took a critical look at the tacky Hawaiian shirt and cargo shorts his friend was wearing. "Which way to Margaritaville?"
"Oh, har har," Edward bit out. He pointed at Jonathan's own chicken legs, exposed as they were thanks to his own shorts. "When was the last time those saw sunlight? The Reagan administration?"
Almost on cue, the Dent family showed up next to the Nashtons, Harvey, Gilda, and Duela. Duela made a beeline to Ellen and the girls started whispering to each other. "Jesus Christ," Harvey growled. "We're not even on the bus yet and you're already starting a fight Nashton?"
"Oh, who asked you, Harv?" Edward asked, rolling his eyes.
Harvey growled again, but Gilda put a hand on his shoulder. "Sweetheart," she said. "Mind your blood pressure."
Harvey's face softened as it only did around his wife. "I'm fine, honey."
Edward turned his attention back to his daughter. "Ellen, did you put sunscreen on before we left the house?"
Ellen looked away from her best friend to look at her father. "You saw me put some on!"
"Well, you need to put on more! You're already turning pink!" Edward pulled a bottle of sunscreen out of his pocket and squeezed some onto his hand. "Come here!"
Ellen groaned but came forward. "I hate my ginger genes," she complained. She moved to take the bottle from her father, only for him to slather it on her face himself. "Dad!" Ellen wailed. "Do you have to do this here!?"
"Oh, how horrible! A father doing his best to make sure his only child doesn't get skin cancer! Someone call the media!"
Ellen looked beseechingly at Jonathan. "Uncle Jon! Make Dad leave me alone!"
"Edward, leave the child be," Jonathan chided. "You're embarrassin' her."
Edward finished and Ellen scurried off back to Duela, who was trying and failing to stifle a laugh.
"Duela," Gilda called out. "You be sure to wear sunscreen too."
"But Mom, I tan!" Duela protested.
"Doesn't matter," Harvey said. "Put it on when we get on the bus."
"When are we getting on the buses?" Jervis asked, taking a look at the ever-growing mob. Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown appeared by Ellen and Duela and became involved in whatever conversation the girls were having. "I think all of the freshmen are just about here."
"Just waiting on Gordon to show," Jonathan said. By the other bus, he saw Victor Fries and Miguel trying to get the kids lined up. "It's damn near nine now. Aren't we supposed to leave at 9:30?"
"Jim's going over the plans for the day with the teachers who are staying at the school," Harvey explained. "He's also probably telling Bolton to go easy on the discipline."
Edward snorted. "That'll be a first!
You might as well ask Goodman to stop being over-dramatic, or Karlo to stop being pretentious-"
"Or you to stop being such an obnoxious pain in the ass!" Harvey interrupted.
Edward's face darkened, but immediately lit up when he caught sight of someone approaching. "Darling!" Penelope came up to the small group, her usual serious expression only just softening as she approached her boyfriend. "Did you come to see me off?" Edward asked.
"Yes," she admitted. "Actually, I also wanted to ask you to-"
"'Try to have a good time'? That's not happening and we know it," Edward glowered.
Penelope rolled her eyes. "Actually, I was going to ask you to try not to get into any trouble today."
"Me? Get into trouble? I am a paragon of virtue! A role model for the children to aspire to!"
"You threw a big hissy tantrum the other day when the vending machine in the teacher's lounge ran out of orange soda," Jonathan drawled.
"After it already ate my money, Jonathan!"
Penelope shook her head, then grabbed gently onto Edward's hand, drawing him away from the group a few feet. "If you're right and this Mockridge is at the park," she said in a low tone. "Than he's probably going to try to bait you into a fight. Just for today, ignore it. Be the bigger man."
Edward huffed. "Fine. For you and Ellen, I'll try."
Penelope smiled softly at him then. "Are you sure you don't want me to come with you? I'm sure Jonathan or Jervis would be more than happy to trade places."
"No," Edward said, kissing her hand. "One of us deserves to get through this day with their sanity intact. Just promise me that you won't get involved in whatever mischief the Sirens have planned for the day."
"Have I ever?" she asked with a bemused expression on her face.
"No, but they'll try."
While the two had their conversation, Ellen watched them with an intent expression on her face. Duela gently elbowed her. "You think she might become your stepmom?"
Ellen shrugged. "Maybe."
"Where are you on the little brother or sister front?"
"I asked Dad again on Christmas if I could have one for my Birthday and he turned really pink and wouldn't talk about it." Ellen pouted. "I'm probably not gonna get one until college at this rate."
Tim scoffed. "Ellen, trust me. Siblings are overrated."
"Nashton!" Harvey called. "Jim's coming! Get back here!"
Edward's face darkened, but he and Penelope came to rejoin the group just as Gordon, trailed as always by Kristen, made his way through the crowd. As soon as got to the front of the bus, he cleared his throat and began to speak. "Good morning everybody! In just a few minutes, we'll be taking off, so we need all students to line up single file in front of one of these buses."
"Speaking of," Jervis pointed out, turning to his friends and colleagues. "We're all getting on this bus, right?"
"As long as Neil isn't on it we are," Jonathan replied.
"Where is Neil?" Jervis asked, taking a quick look around. "I haven't seen him or Basil yet."
"Maybe we got lucky and they called out," Harvey muttered. "Or they murdered each other."
"Harvey," Gilda lightly scolded.
Penelope shook her head. "Neil and Karlo on the trip together? What was Gordon thinking allowing that to happen?"
A loud whistle blew, interrupting Gordon while he was still addressing the crowd of students and their parents. The crowd turned as one and saw Neil at the school's entrance, in front of a portion of the school's marching band, dressed in a spiffy summer outfit and waving a baton around. He led out the band to an instrumental rendition of 76 Trombones, a wide smile on his face the whole time.
Jonathan pinched the bridge of his nose. "Jesus. Tap-dancing. Christ."
"Well," Edward said. "If nothing else, Neil certainly knows how to make an entrance."
Neil continued up to the second bus, the children falling into a single-file line behind him. As soon as he was at the front, he turned and bowed to the marching band. "Thank you, boys and girls! Enjoy your day today!" The band dispersed and the assembled crowd broke out into loud applause.
Basil Karlo chose that moment to make his appearance. He walked up next to Neil, looked at his outfit and sniffed. "Not bad. For a rank amateur."
Neil's face turned bright red. He looked like he was about to say something when Gordon spoke up again. "Anyway. We'll be arriving back on campus at 5 pm. Parents, please be here to pick up your kids. That being said, it's time to board." The students by the first bus finally began to line up after saying their goodbyes to their parents and guardians.
Ellen and Duela, by virtue of being daughters of faculty members, were the first to board. "Save me a window seat, Duela!" Ellen called after her friend as they scrambled aboard.
"Ellen, don't run!" Edward called after her. Tim and Stephanie followed their friends onto the bus. Soon, the last students had boarded and it was time for the staff to go. Jonathan and Jervis climbed aboard, while Edward and Harvey both turned to their significant others for their final goodbyes.
"Great. A day at a theme park with these nuts," Harvey grumbled.
Gilda leaned up on her tiptoes to give him a kiss. "Don't let it get too you too much, Harvey. Try to have fun with Duela today."
Harvey smiled at his wife, then got aboard.
"Remember what we talked about, Edward," Penelope said, lightly squeezing his hand. "Try not to get into trouble."
"Well, I can't speak for my illustrious colleagues, but I promise that I won't start anything," he said. He leaned in a bit closer. "In the meantime, I had a few more ideas of what you could do to reward me."
Penelope fondly rolled her eyes. "Reward you for behaving like you're supposed to? Really?"
Edward mock-pouted, only to catch someone approaching from the corner of his eye. "Oh no."
Penelope was about to ask him what was wrong, only for Harley's voice to interrupt. "Hiya, Eddie!" She bounded up to give him a hug. Selina and Pamela showed up as well, both of them looking at the bus with a smirk.
Edward groaned. "What are you three doing here? Come to rub it in one last time?"
"Actually, I needed to speak to them," Gordon said. He turned to address Selina. "So we're all clear on the schedule for the day?"
"Half-day classes, final bell at 12:30, kids in detention out by 2:30, clubs and activities out by 3:00, stay on campus until you get back and help with pickup," Selina rattled off. "Crystal clear."
Gordon nodded. "Good. Remember, Strange will be leaving campus at 12:30 for a meeting with members of the school board. Kristen, of course, will help out with anything you might need." His look turned grave. "Keep an eye on Bolton, but don't start anything with him. Understand?"
Pamela scoffed. "You should be telling him not to start anything with us."
"I did, as a matter of fact," Gordon said. "Alright, I think that's everything. Kristen, give me status updates every hour until school's out. Ladies, try not to have too much fun." He turned and walked towards the second bus to help them with boarding, leaving Edward with the Sirens.
"This is gonna be great!" Harley said, throwing her arms around Kristen and Penelope's shoulders. "After Strange leaves, we're gonna have a girl's day in the chem lab!"
Edward grimaced. "And just what nonsense does that entail?"
Pamela let out a cold laugh. "Wouldn't you like to know."
Edward's face fell, and Penelope shook off Harley's grip to reassure him. "I'm sure it'll be fine," she said.
"Relax Eddie, we'll take care of your girl," Selina teased.
"That's what I'm afraid of," Edward ground out.
Penelope rolled her eyes. "You're all ridiculous."
"Edward!" Jonathan called out. "Are you getting on board or do Dent and I have to drag your ass on?"
"I'm coming!" Edward snapped. He took one last look at his girlfriend and the Sirens and shuddered. "Remember me fondly."
Harley just gave him a cheeky wave. "Bye, Eddie! See you in the funny papers!"
Edward waved back, then took a deep breath and boarded. Gordon came back to the bus and gave the women a wave before he climbed on. The bus door closed and the remaining crowd of people took a step back as the buses started. The first bus pulled out of the parking lot, followed by the second bus. In a matter of moments, the buses had passed the main gate and were on their way to Mt. Olympus theme park.
God help them all.

Let’s talk about gender in Stranger Things 2!
So there’s a bunch of stuff happening in my life and I keep meaning to post something about that, but it’s serious and scary and stuff, so instead, I’m going to ramble a while about why I really love some of the subtle gender role reversals in season 2 of Stranger Things!  Like a normal, well-adjusted person!
Also, no major spoilers ahead, but I will talk about things that happened in Season 2, so if you want to come to it totally fresh, please skip this.
So I’m still a little sad that there’s no queer representation in this show.  Yes, I know it takes place in the 80s and queer people hadn’t been invented yet, but still.  (I was SOOO hoping that the big reveal at the dance would be that Dustin was building himself up to ask Will to dance, but I guess that probably would have been genuinely too much for an 80s middle school to handle.)  However, despite that, I was actually really impressed by some of the smaller ways the story undercut traditional gender stereotypes this season, and some of the improvements to how the girl and women characters were written.
That’s not to say that I thought they were poorly written last season - I just thought they were a lot more one-dimensional.  Emotional mother.  Brainy, goody-two-shoes girl exploring her sexuality.  Even Eleven, who was by far the female character with whom we spent the most time, was sort of scattered - the writers clearly couldn’t decide how unaware of the world she should be, and in turn, what things about gender she should care about (ie, she didn’t know what ‘pretty’ meant, but she still wanted to be it), a problem I don’t think they’ve entirely corrected (more on that in a sec).  The male characters were similarly archetypal - the drunk, broken-down town sheriff, the maniacal scientist, the lovesick teen, etc.
This season, I feel like the characters all got a lot more flushed out, but more than that, the way they did so also made some really interesting choices about gender and gender roles.  Also, I’m occasionally going to refer to the characters as sets because that how some of the storylines run - the adults (Joyce, Hopper, and Bob), the teens (Nancy, Jonathan, Steve, and Billy), and the kids (Eleven, Will, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Max).
1. Joyce and Bob: Okay, so I know I’m apparently the only person in the universe who doesn’t ship Joyce and Hopper, but I loved Joyce and Bob.  Bob is a ‘beta male’ - he’s fat, short, into electronics, likes Kenny Loggins, makes corny jokes, and is too much of a scaredy-cat to watch scary movies.  However, it’s made immediately clear that Joyce isn’t just dating him because she needs a man or in order to fill some hole in her life - the first scene we see of them is the two of them adorably flirting, and then hard-core making out.  Bob is also consistently shown to be the less driven of the pair (a theme that will actually come up a lot in this post).  Joyce is a fighter.  It’s an important aspect of Joyce’s character, one that was established last season, but in the context of her frantically fighting to get her son back.  In the grand tradition of the Aliens franchise and Poltergeist, Stranger Things holds that mothers are the toughest fighters, and this season makes it clear that that’s always been true of Joyce Byers - it wasn’t just the panic of losing Will that drove her; she’s always been like this.  Bob knew her in high school, and makes it clear that he’s always admired her for it.  However, the story doesn’t present Bob as emasculated (a term I hate!) - he’s jazzed as all hell to finally be dating Joyce Byers!
In setting up their relationship in these terms, the story gives us something we don’t often see - Bob is a boy-gal Friday.  In fact, he’s Joyce’s boy-gal Friday.  He’s competent, with a complementary skill set; he’s valuable, and Joyce clearly values him, and he makes a lot of connections and discoveries on his own, but he’s not capable of turning those connections into actions that drive the plot forward until he turns them over to Joyce.  And he’s perfectly happy in his role - even when he shows up in her house covered in Will’s bizarre tunnel drawing and is told he can’t ask questions, he’s clearly having the time of his life, solving a cool puzzle with a woman he loves.  Like every gal Friday, he can’t conceive of a world in which he could be the protagonist - he’s a superhero, but he’s not the Hero.  That’s Joyce
2. Hopper and Eleven: Off the bat, I have to admit that I think the writers are still doing the worst with Eleven when it comes to writing gender, just because they have the most room to play with and they’re not making use of it.  There’s no reason for Ele to have a concept of gender performance - she’s a lab rat. We know that the mad scientist raised her to think of him as her “Papa” (whether he was biologically or not), but we’re given no evidence that she had any concept of being his “daughter” or a “girl.”  Again, I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but it’s part of the reason I actually really liked the episode with her and Eight (also because I’m a sucker for a coming of age story) because I think pairing her gender development with the punk scene is a potentially brilliant way to play with some of these ideas in a culturally-contemporary way (since gender non-conformity was a big part of punk), and it’s something I really hope the writers come back to next season.
That being said, I did really enjoy the relationship between Ele and Hopper, and in particular, the fact that Hopper is clearly raising a kid, not a girl.  We never see Hopper force any gender norms on Ele (even though he had a daughter of his own and could potentially have those kinds of expectations for her), we see them sharing in not traditionally feminine things (building traps, eating garbage, watching scary movies - all things dads usually do with their sons in movies and TV), and even though it’s clear that Hopper knows about Mike’s and Ele’s feelings for each other, we never get any weird matchmaking or overbearing overprotectiveness from him - his overprotectiveness of Ele is always about keeping her safe from Hawkins, not keeping her away from boys.  He even embraces her “bitchin’” new look, but clearly also helps her get ready for the dance.
3. Mad Max and the AV Club: So I love Max.  I love Max so much.  And I still love the AV Club.  I do get the point of articles like this one that part of the nostalgia of Stranger Things is a nostalgia for nerds who are actually bullied and oppressed, but I think that’s over-simplifying things.  To start with, Lucas is black, and this season they finally managed to engage with that a little, in the same way they managed to engage with Dustin’s disability a little last season.  Also, I think the way that the AV club’s masculinity is presented is important.  This is not the adorkable misogyny of the Big Bang Theory.  They are not traditionally masculine and they are absolutely fighters, and those two things are never presented as being in conflict in any way.  Indeed, the constant references to D&D, including their own nickname for their group as “the party,” sort of reaffirms this - for people who know the game, they know you need a balanced party.  You don’t want all muscles, or all magic, or all rogues.  In many ways, Will becomes the ultimate symbol of this in Season 2 - he is absolutely a soft boy (Hopper even asks if he’s gay in Season 1, to which Joyce rightly replies, “why would that matter?!”), and yet, he is both the major villain AND the one fighting hardest against that villain in this season.  His strength to fight the mind flayer stems from his nontraditional masculinity - from his art, and ultimately, from his empathy, being kept in control of his body by the stories of love and affection from his mother, brother, and best friend.
Max is similarly nontraditional - we’re introduced to her by the traditional nerd trope of “girls don’t play video games!,” “girls don’t skateboard!;” however, if we’re really supposed to read the AV club as models for nerd culture, then the important element surely comes in their immediate reversal in meeting Max and seeing that she does indeed play video games and skateboard.  Not only do they not gatekeep or question her love of these things, they are immediately more impressed by her because of them.  They want to be friends with her because she’s a girl who skateboards and plays video games, and it’s clear that this is the root of Dustin’s and Lucas’ attraction to her, as well.  Even Mike’s resistance to bringing her into the party is never presented as her being a girl or a “fake gamer girl” - the show does a good job of showing that he doesn’t like having her around because she can’t know about Ele, and that having her there without knowing means that things are moving on and the others might move on, as well.  As soon as Lucas spills the beans and Max is fully on board, Mike’s resistance disappears.
4. Nancy and Jonathan: So I think the teens’ stories are where Stranger Things does the best with undercutting gender roles because these stories are so ingrained and so formulaic normally.  These are also the ones that I noticed the most while watching it.  Also, full disclosure - I don’t really ship Nancy with anyone, and was sort of disappointed that last season had a teen girl, two love interests, love triangle story line.  However, I do think the lovestory between Nancy and Jonathan has some of the best gender reversals.  To start with, Nancy is absolutely the Protagonist of their story.  Nancy causes everything to happen in their story.  It’s her acts that inadvertently bring them together (by getting drunk), but she decides that they’re going to do something to get justice for Barb, she takes them to find the journalist, she comes up with the plan to blackmail Hawkins.  Even in the scenes of them getting together, we see her sitting up in bed, trying to decide what to do.  She goes to the door, and Jonathan is there.  All of the focus is on her as the decision maker.
This role reversal comes to a head in the final showdown with the mind flayer.  I loved the call back to the last season when Hopper asked Jonathan if he could shoot a gun, and Nancy took it instead - they had already established that she was the better shot, and again, this scene wasn’t presented as her emasculating Jonathan in any way (and Hopper doesn’t hesitate for a second in handing over the riffle) - it’s clearly just that their lives are at stake, and of the pair, she’s the better shot. But the best is the scene in the cabin - this could have so easily been the teary-eyed girlfriend hanging off her stoic boyfriend (which, to be fair, was a lot of how Jonathan was written last season).  Instead, we got Joyce, raging and holding down her son, who was clearly in pain, as Jonathan screamed hysterically and cried, trying to stop her, being held back and finally comforted by Nancy.
Let me be clear - this scene only makes sense this way, given what we know about these characters.  Joyce is driven and direct - she’s going to make a plan and stick to it, come Hell or high water.  Jonathan has already been shown to be way too invested in Will and his well-being, and it seems completely believable by now that he would even fight his mother if he thought Will’s life was in the balance.  Nancy is an outsider - she’s not family, and her concern is mostly for Jonathan.  However, even as exciting as this scene was, I couldn’t help but step out of it a bit as I was watching it and realize how weird it was to see a young man portrayed as hysterical, rallying against a woman with a plan, and then being comforted by another woman, who was relatively calm and unaffected.  It works so much better this way, but there are so many show where this scene would have had Nancy freaking out for no other reason than because women are hysterical.
5. Steve: Oh, Steve. heart eyes  I am so in love with Steve after this season.  Obviously Stranger Things is a show that loves its parallels, and Steve’s stories move increasingly into roles played by women in the original as the season goes on.  The initial story with him and Dustin have parallels to Stand By Me and Gremlins, but by the big showdown with the mind flayer, Steve opens embraces his role as “the babysitter,” a role that actually has some decent echoes in 80s movies - Adventures in Babysitting would be the obvious, but Steve’s role in the group also directly parallels Mary Plimpton’s character in the Goonies, as the third wheel to the big brother and girlfriend (except in this case, those two had buggered off to go do The Omen instead), who also delivers the incredibly quotable line, “I feel like I’m babysitting, only I’m not getting paid.”
However, again, we’re not given any hint that Steve has any problems with his new role.  After the rest of the adults and teens leave, he directly parallels Mr. Mom, the movie the Byers were watching earlier, wearing an apron and slinging a kitchen towel over his shoulder after doing the washing up.  But whereas the entire premise of that movie is how embarrassed Michael Keaton’s character feels to be a stay-at-home dad and how bad he is at household tasks, Steve seems genuinely proud of himself for tidying up the Byers house, and proud to serve as guiding voice to the remaining kids left in his care.  Even his use of a traditionally-masculine sports metaphor to explain why they have to stay put reaffirms how much he’s internalized his role - he clearly means for it to be rally speech, as he’s presumably delivered to his teammates, and he shows his own confusion when it concludes with, “and that’s why we’re on the bench.”
The episode briefly looks as though it’s going to offer Steve a redeemingly masculine role of protector with the arrival of Billy, Max’s big brother.  We get some macho posturing and a fist fight, and although Steve does get to come to Lucas’ rescue, he’s still soundly trounced by Billy. Again, this is completely in keeping with the characters - we’ve already seen that Billy isn’t just up for a fight, but abusive and dangerously violent.  However, it’s Max, the only girl in the room, who puts down Billy, again in a series of gender undercuts - first, she beats him subversively by drugging him (poison being a woman’s weapon and all that), but then, in another reversal, she takes the opportunity as he’s weakened and blacking out to threaten him with Steve’s baseball bat, extracting protection for her and the AV club using the same oath as we’ve seen used previously by Billy’s abusive father.  The rest of the episode is clearly The Goonies, with Steve-as-Mary-Plimpton and the kids running around underground, and Steve reiterating that he’s there because he’ll be held responsible if anything happens to them.
Even in the final denouement at the dance, Steve gets the same final appearance as Joyce and Hopper, the other two caregivers, dropping off his ‘kid’ and driving away.  (Interestingly, of the teens and adults, only Nancy gets a denouement at the dance - Jonathan is also there, but just gets to smile and wave from the sidelines, the same ending as basically every supporting girlfriend from every teen movie, again highlighting that it’s Nancy who is the Protagonist.)
So why do I care about all of this?  Well, one of my biggest frustrations with a lot of TV and films is that I feel like writers still suck at writing women - in particular, women as protagonists.  It seems like way too many writers can’t understand how women can make choices that drive the story forward, and that means way too many stories fall back on traditional tropes where women are the backups and support.  It’s cool to see so many of those tropes not only avoided, but directly reversed, and so effectively.  Bob, Jonathan, Steve, and the AV club are cool, interesting, likable characters.  They’re not diminished by not being the protagonists, or not being traditionally masculine.  Like I said, I would love to see the writers do more with Ele because there is so much opportunity there for a truly agender character, which is something else sorely missing from modern TV, but I also hope they continue to present women who are ambitious and driven, and men who are emotional and empathetic because it’s super cool to finally get those kinds of stories.

Stranger Things 2
So with the release of Stranger Things 2 this past weekend, I’m embarrassed to say, I have already finished the entire season. Me and my boyfriend sat down with the plan to watch only one per week, ensuring we really appreciated every moment rather than rushing through the entire season. We failed. We watched four episodes back to back Sunday afternoon, two Monday, then the final three Tuesday. Pretty good going huh?
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved it. But I will probably spend the next few weeks watching it all over again at a much slower pace, as I can barely remember what happened in episode number one, let alone hour by hour. Binge watching is great, but it turns out you don’t remember much of what happened… Especially if like me, you have a shitty memory at the best of times.
The season opens with an episode called MADMAX, introducing a host of new characters including Max herself. Initially I was unsure about bringing in new main characters - especially that douchebag Billy (Team Steve all the way). Being only the second instalment of Stranger Things, I wasn’t sure it warranted so many more people. Was the plot really that hard to develop without the excitement of new faces? A few moments throughout the season felt a little forced, a bit like they were trying too hard to create iconic moments on the same scale as season 1, which just wasn’t necessary as the actors do that without the additional help.
My biggest take away from it all though was how sorry I felt for Steve. He turned out to be one of the biggest good guys of the show and has nothing to show for it. Let me explain…
*Spoiler Alert*
Hopper became this admirable father figure turned alien killer hero, and it looks like he and Joyce are gonna get all cosy from the scenes outside of the Snow Ball. Even if this does’t turn into a romantic relationship it’s been made clear they really do have each other to lean on. Also with his new and official relationship with Eleven, Hopper comes out on top. Then there’s all six of the kids getting their happy endings in one way or another. Mike & Eleven (I refuse to call her Jane). Dustin and that lovely moment with Nancy. Barb and more importantly her family getting the closure the public we’re so desperate for. Max & Lucas. Nancy and Jonathan pairing up - rightly so I feel after their own reactions to events they’ve shared. Even Will seems on track to have much more normal teenage years from now on.
However, there’s then poor Bob Newman (aka Samwise Gamgee), a character who I felt was totally unnecessary at the beginning, but who I had a strong bond with by the end - I can’t even bring myself to talk about how sad I was about the fact he stepped up to be a hero. But step up to be a hero he did, meaning no-one can ever say a bad word against Bob Newman again.
And then there’s Steve. The babysitter turned perfect role model for the kids. I didn’t want him to end up with Nancy after her ‘bullshit’ episode, but it really broke my heart that the last scene you see him in, it’s a really sweet-sour almost pitiful ‘everything worked out okay and you’ve come out alive, be grateful for that - even though you’ve lost your girlfriend and are obviously still cut up about it’ moment. I’m hoping that if there is ever a season 3, his decision to be very mature about the whole ordeal proves to be in his favour. I guess you could say that his transformation from King Steve into the man he is at the end of Season 2 is him winning, but I’m much more shallow than that and wanted to see a full smile on his face at the end.
All in all, it seems like the Duffer Brothers wanted to keep an element of the Sci-Fi plot believable with things like Steve getting a raw deal and Bob’s horrific but let’s face it pretty realistic demise. So credit to them for doing the story justice and creating something that lives up to the first. The plot twists, jumpy scenes and heart wrenching relationship moments really made me feel something. Also full credit for not making the final Snow Ball scene completely cringeworthy - it had just the right about of cheese for me.
Now it’s time to re-watch and fully absorb the details…

#Dennis #Dugan #adultmodel #hairstraightener #hiphopmusic #ig #inspire #jewelry #ootd #paris #picoftheday #portraitphotography
Born and raised in Wheaton, Illinois, Dennis Dugan began acting in high school and, after graduating from Chicago’s Goodman Theater School in 1969, relocated to NYC where he appeared off-Broadway in productions of “A Man’s Man” and “The House of Blue Leaves”. Moving to Hollywood in 1973, he worked in episodics, as well as TV-movies like “Death Race” and “The Girl Most Likely To . . .” (both ABC, 1973), before making an auspicious feature debut with an excellent comic performance in Jonathan Kaplan’s light-hearted, drive-in sex comedy “Night Call Nurses” (1974), followed by appearances in “The Day of the Locust”, “Night Moves” and “Smile” the following year. Dugan raised his profile significantly in 1976, very first portraying Nick Nolte’s best friend in the most-watched miniseries of its time, “Rich Man, Poor Man” (ABC), and later creating the title character of “Richie Brockelman: The Missing 24 Hours”, an NBC TV-movie that also marked important career connections with executive producers Stephen J Cannell and Steven Bochco. He later reprised that role on episodes of NBC’s “The Rockford Files” and in the short-lived 1978 spin-off series “Richie Brockelman, Private Eye”.
After one a lot more go at Brockelman in yet another episode of “The Rockford Files”, Dugan landed the recurring role of Captain Freedom in the Bochco-developed “Hill Street Blues” (NBC) in 1982. He returned as a series regular heading the cast of “Empire” (CBS, 1984), a sitcom spoof of the then-popular “Dallas”. He also added a zany touch as the wisecracking tabloid reporter Edgar ‘Benny’ Benedek in the comedy-fantasy “Shadow Chasers” (ABC, 1985-86). By this time, Dugan was very interested in stepping behind the camera and he embarked on a five-month apprenticeship at Stephen J Cannell Productions, culminating in his first directing assignments, two 1987 episodes of the NBC series “Hunter”. He also helmed episodes the following year of the Cannell-produced series “Wise Guy” and “Sonny Spoon” while beginning his run in the recurring role as Cybill Shepherd’s husband in the ABC series “Moonlighting”. When its producers identified he was directing for other series, they brought him on board to helm numerous episodes of the show’s last season (1988-89).
In addition to his refreshing career as a TV director, Dugan also continued acting in features although very few parts were memorable. It was possibly inevitable that he would move to the helmer’s chair for features and in 1990, he made his directorial debut with “Problem Child” (1990), a botched comic twist on “The Bad Seed” that had some amusing instances. Dugan attempted valiantly to recreate the style of the Marx Brothers’ 1935 classic “A Night at the Opera” with John Turturro (Groucho), Bob Nelson (Harpo), Mel Smith (Chico) and Nancy Marchand (Margaret Dumont) scoring high marks for good intentions without really pulling it off. He delivered a commercial, if not critical, success with “Happy Gilmore” (1996), starring “Saturday Night Live” cast member Adam Sandler in one of his patented, puerile roles as a lovable loser. Taking its inspiration from “Caddyshack”, this golfing comedy fell far below the level of its model while managing to gross a combined $75 million between box-office and video rentals, insuring that the greatest laughs occurred on the way to the bank. The director next teamed with another “SNL” star–Chris Farley–on “Beverly Hills Ninja” (1997), which opened at the Number One significantly less than a year later (before word of mouth effectively killed it), giving him the distinction of being the only director to have two films open in less than 11 months in the top two spots on the box-office charts. Dugan reteamed with Sandler on “Big Daddy” (1999), bringing his expertise for working with children (particularly on “Problem Child”) to the project co-starring twins Cole and Dylan Sprouse (from the ABC series “Grace Under Fire”) as the little boy who enters and changes a feckless slacker’s (Sandler) life. Without Sandler, however, Dugan’s next comedic effort, 2001’s limp sex farce “Saving Silverman” was a flop. The director next teamed with a top-level star, comedian Martin Lawrence, for his next effort, “National Security” (2003).
Dugan has not given up acting (he manages to take on roles in several of the films he helms), but directing has enabled him to be a little more exclusive about the parts he takes. Despite graduating to the big screen, he has continued to work frequently as a TV director through the 90s, often on series produced by Bochco, including episodes of “Civil Wars” and “Doogie Howser, M.D.” (both on ABC during the 1992-93 season), “L.A. Law” (NBC, 1993-94 season), “Byrds of Paradise” (ABC, 1994) and “NYPD Blue” (ABC, 1993-95; 1997-98 seasons). For Cannell Productions, he helmed episodes of “Traps” (CBS, 1994), not to mention the pilot for the executive producer’s “Marker” (UPN, 1995), and “Doogie Howser” inaugurated a creative relationship with yet another TV series heavyweight David E Kelley, an association he would renew helming episodes of the hit series “Picket Fences” (CBS, 1993-95 seasons), “Chicago Hope” (1994-95 season) and “Ally McBeal” (Fox, 1997-98 season). Dugan also worked as a director for two other UPN vehicles, “Love Boat: the Next Wave” (1998-99) and the musical comedy series “Shasta McNasty” (1999- ).

Despite their differences for so many years, we are happy that the two of them sorted out their problems and have been seen together so many times.
Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan
Another one of those famous duos from Bollywood is of the tall and handsome Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. This duo is an all time favourite. Abhishek might not have been able to fill his father’s shoes when it comes to movies, but these two surely look the most dashing together. Abhishek made his debut in Bollywood in the year 2000 in Refugee but unfortunately, couldn’t live up to people’s expectations. Being the child of India’s best actor does come with a lot of responsibilities as well. Abhishek might not have made a mark in the industry individually but this famous duo has created wonders together in movies like Bunty Aur Babli, Paa, Sarkar and many more.
