Why being against trans rights as a feminist is bull
Generally I fall pretty neatly into line with the radfem line of thinking about things (anti surrogacy, anti sex industry, pro choice, anti beauty industry etc). And I don't think that radical feminists who disagree with me on this are evil or anything, but I do believe that it shouldn't be a priority and that this whole effort will be remembered badly.
"But the bathrooms-"
Letting trans women into female bathrooms does not increase sexual assault. According to Media Matters, "...the fear is baseless- completely unsupported by years of evidence from states that already have non-discrimination laws on the books." To give examples:
Rhode Island reported "no increase in sex crimes due to 2001 law"
Karen Richards of the Vermont Human Rights commission said she is "not aware" of any problems from a 2001 law
Jim O'Neill said he was "unaware of any sexual assault as the result of the CT gender identity or expression law" in Connecticut
If you search "Debunking the Big Myth about Transgender Inclusive Bathrooms" from Media Matters you can see the other twelve state level examples
There's also a very well written article from Time called "Transgender Bathroom: Advocates Say 'Predator' is a Myth" . They detail several locations like New York City and California which protect trans rights without seeing a spike in sexual assaults, the fact that school officials and police departments have not seen a spike either, and that several organizations dedicated to stopping violence against women all agree that bathroom rights aren't a threat.
Moreover, according to Vox's article "Anti-transgender bathroom hysteria, explained"- all of the incidences commonly cited of men dressing up as women or posing as a woman in order to commit sexual assault happened before a non-discrimination bathroom law was passed. Meaning that these laws don't cause sh*t.
But to add onto another point, there's a very good reason why we cannot simply say that women's bathrooms must be defined by sex alone. Which is that we end up exposing transgender or nonbinary youth to extremely avoidable violence instead.
According to an article from Harvard entitled "transgender teens with restricted bathroom access at higher risk of sexual assault", quote, "Transgender and non-binary teens face greater sexual assault in schools that prevent them from using bathrooms or locker rooms consistent with their gender identity." 36% of trans or nonbinary youth with restricted access had been sexually assaulted in the past year. In no world is that an acceptable number. Not only does restricting bathroom access not solve anything for cis women, it actively inflicts male violence on transgender women.
And even in the outlandish world where this wasn't enough of a reason, it also leads to cis women being policed on their appearance and how feminine they present in order to avoid looking trans. In Las Vegas a woman named Jay was kicked out because they mistook her for trans according to Advocate article 'cis woman mistaken as transgender records being berated in bathroom'. Aimee Toms in Danbury was similarly harassed, as was Jessica Rush in Dallas. There's several videos in the Vox article "Women are getting harassed in bathrooms because of anti-transgender hysteria". And guess what? This sort of policing what a cis woman can look like is only going to get worse as people continue to advocate against trans women in bathrooms.
And women's sports-
Any physical advantage that transgender people have in sports goes away several years after medical transition. According to the NBC article "trans women retain athletic edge after a year of hormone therapy"
(1) "For the Olympic, the elite level, I'd say probably two years is more realistic than one year" - namely, trans people have standard hormone levels if they wait two years after medical transition. "After two years, Roberts told NBC News, 'they were fairly equivalent to cisgender women'".
There were some limitations to the Roberts study, but there's also a 2015 Harper study backing this up.
(3) Joanna Harper, a medical physicist in Portland, already ran a study on this. "...found that trans women ran at least 10 percent slower after beginning hormones. And, relatively speaking, they did no better against cisgender female runners than they previously done against cisgender men".
Namely, as long as there's been a medical transition for several years, it's still a totally fair competition.
But laws which ban transgender women from sports have had the incidental effect of allowing for state-sanctioned genital inspections on minors. This sounds fake, right? But in Ohio Republicans have passed a bill which "...has a verification requirement, if someone is 'accused' or 'suspected' of being trans... she must go through evaluations of her external and internal genitalia, testosterone levels and genetic makeup." And believe it or not, they only had one transgender girl who was an athlete in high school. One! This is according to the Ohio Capital Journal's article "GOP passes bill aiming to root out 'suspected' transgender female athletes with genital inspection."
Similarly, Florida has just passed a ban on transgender students in sports in April 2021, with provisions similar to the Ohio law. "A dispute regarding a student's sex shall be resolved by the student's school or institution by requesting that the student provide a health examination... provides for 'routine sports physical examination' of students' reproductive organs, genetic makeup, or testosterone levels." This is according to Changing America, titled "Florida's new ban on transgender students in sports would allow schools to subject minors to genital inspections."
I don't know about you, but as someone who has enjoyed track, swim team, and basketball all through educational institutions- I don't want the government in my pants.
Beyond the creepy implications of the state demanding invasive inspections on literal children, this also goes back to the point I made on bathrooms above- that when we take spaces away trans people, we take spaces away from any woman or girl who society deems as presenting too 'masculine'.
As feminists we can absolutely support trans rights without compromising our integrity. And not only can we, we should.
Edited August 24, 2023: I wanted to add a section about the provisions of these bills for literal genital inspections. I regret that it wasn't in the original, but I remembered these articles earlier and thought that it was important to add here.
The other thing I did later the same day was take out the part referencing women like Caster Semenya competing in the Olympics and being removed because of high testosterone levels. Someone has kindly pointed out that these are intersex women, which the original article I had read referred to as cis. I feel that intersex women in athletics deserve their own discussion, and I haven't (a) read enough on the issue or (b) learned enough about the intersex community as a whole to take part.

"When ruling in the case of West 49th St., LLC v. O'Neill, New York Civil Court Judge Karen May Bacdayan wrote that "the time has arrived" for polyamorous relationships to have legal rights, and said that the problem with previous same-sex rulings is that "they recognize only two-person relationships."

It's been a second since somebody said something this stupid.
I need to periodically remind everyone that the navy is cops. Stede killed two cops. Roach punched a cop. Jim threw a knife through a cop's hand. They took officers of the law hostage. You know what Izzy did when presented with fucking cops? He sold other queer people out to them. So I want that fucking tool to repeat that "Izzy is queer as in start a riot everyone else is queer as in love wins" line in genuine sincerity. Your redemption arc is unconfirmed, but you know what is confirmed, that Izzy is a cop calling Karen and the crew of the revenge would beat cops with a nail bat if given the chance. That's where we left season one. We don't actually know much about season 2 other than that it looks like Izzy is telling the navy guy with the missing nose that the crew of the revenge doesn't know anything about piracy, which doesn't seem very redemptiony to me.
Also genuinely if you think Con "vote the torries out, sucks that the queens dead" O'Neill is radical I'm laughing at you. Laughing my ass off even. If you met a real anarchist you would shit your pants and dial 911.
I don't fucking care if you like Izzy but admit that you like a cop calling villain played by a man who would clutch his pearls at an overturned cop car. If you actually wanted a leather daddy fighting for your rights Ed and Fang skinned a racist I'd start there.

You ever think about superman's one-off issue kids..
Well sons, I think the only "main Canon" daughters he has are Ariella, Cir, and Otho. And Ariella and Cir aren't exactly main Canon. Like Vol and Jon Lane and Superman Jr (the Denny O'Neil one)
Anyways do you got a 16 circle Venn diagram? I think adding in the Karen power girls & hyperman would be too much...
honestly the lack of super daughters is sooo sad. like ik its bc 1. male writers and 2. the idea that a daughter cant carry the superman mantle the way a son could, but he wouldve be suuuch a good girl dad. i just know it. and tbh i kinda stopped following current comics right around when otho and osul were introduced so i dont have much of an opinion on them....
im always a bit disappointed that superkids dont usually stick around that long. well, aside from jon, who i USED to love but going from bendis' hands to taylors has really soured me on him. this is Not about him tho. just like. superkids (by nature of being connected to superman) get hit pretty hard by the cape comic tendency to introduce a Child Character as a plot device and then be pushed out of the way when writers dont know what to do with them anymore and i want to shake them so bad. its one of my least favorite comic tropes

A Flower Given to My Daughter
- Joyce
Frail the white rose and frail are
Her hands that gave
Whose soul is sere and paler
Than time's wan wave.
Rosefrail and fair, yet frailest
A wonder wild
In gentle eyes thou veilest,
My blueveined child.

Luckenbooth
Author: Jenni Fagan
First published: 2021
Rating: ★★★★☆
This is a story of a building, the No. 10 Luckebooth Close in Edinburgh, through the decades of the 20th century and some of its inhabitants. It is a dark story, with distinct horror features and would make a perfect read for a spooky season. It also uses one of my favorite tropes: a myriad of stories that all tie into one, but all have something unique to offer as well. There were one or two that were a bit less interesting to me and while I am not against sex and sexuality explored in literature, there are some things that I simply do not need to read about. Still, this is a book worthy of notice, especially if you like your literature to be a little weird and wild.
With Fire and Sword
Author: Henryk Sienkiewicz
First published: 1884
Rating: ★★★★☆
As a girl, I fell in love with the film adaptation of Fire and Sword myself (greatly owed to the God among men the most handsome dude ever Michal Zebrowski), and ever since wanted to read it, especially since one of my all-time favourite books - Quo Vadis - was penned by the same author. Because I have watched the movie multiple times, there were no plot surprises for me in the book (as the adaptation follows it quite closely), but I gained a new perspective of all the characters and could appreciate the truly beautiful writing. I just wish the battles were not as long as they were. Modern sensibilities may be offended that the "good guys" are openly convinced they are better than the common folk, because "God created the nobility to rule and be honorable", but in the context of times the story is set in, it is certainly an aspect that speaks to historical accuracy Sienkiewicz strived for. The highlight is undoubtedly the character of Zagloba!
The Tea Dragon Tapestry
Author: Kay O'Neill
First published: 2021
Rating: ★★★★★
Every time I am in a fragile emotional state, these books are there to help, to warm up my soul, to make me cry tears of healing.
The Good Wife of Bath
Author: Karen Brooks
First published: 2021
Rating: ★★★★☆
While the book is a bit lengthy, it does a great job describing the world of a medieval woman. the characters are all vivid and you cannot but help rooting for Eleanor throughout. The relationships are really the solid spine of the story - both the good and toxic ones. Really, really liked this.
Nazi Wives: The Women at the Top of Hitler's Germany
Author: Frances Hardinge
First published: 2019
Rating: ★★★☆☆
A good starting point for anyone interested in the women behind the Nazi criminals, though I would have liked something more fleshed out. What I found the most revealing was the fact each and every one of these women never admitted their husbands were murderous monsters. Nay. They were honorable heroes in their eyes - and that was the hill they decided to die on. Well, now, at least they are dead.
Ninth House
Author: Leigh Bardugo
First published: 2019
Rating: ★★★★☆
People tended to be really disappointed by this book when it came out, but I personally enjoyed it in spite of the weaknesses it has. Out of the top of my head I could mention for example how convenient some of the magic was to fit every problem. Still, this was an interesting concept and I had fun.
Devadesátky! Roky nespoutané svobody
Author: Johana Fundová
First published: 2019
Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
This Wicked Fate
Author: Kalynn Bayron
First published: 2022
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Unfortunately, this was a letdown. I truly enjoyed the settings and the subtle use of Greek mythology in the first book, however, the sequel loses all that subtlety, all that atmosphere, and the whole first half is really nothing but sitting around and talking about how we don´t know what to do anything. The action-packed second half read better, but by that time I was also supposed to care about a whole bunch of people and I really did not. Finally, whatever attempts at humour conversations and one-liners fell flat.
The Last Tale of the Flower Bride
Author: Roshani Chokshi
First published: 2023
Rating: ★★★★☆
Delightful and gorgeously written piece painted with a gothic paintbrush with broad strokes of psychological (dare I say?) thriller. My first time reading from this author and probably not the last.
Malibu Rising
Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid
First published: 2021
Rating: ★★★★☆
I really liked Evelyn Hugo, absolutely loved Daisy Jones, and the next in line - Malibu Rising - is too a really solid book. I enjoyed the unusual way of piecing the story together, I enjoy the fact the book was like a little advent calendar with characters opening with their little windows into the past and the sense of urgency and madness as the book - and the party in the center of it all - progresses, definitely got to me. Perhaps I only did not need every character to appear to have their outfits desribed, which I felt was done only to impress upon us the wild 80s aesthetics.
The Enchanted April
Author: Elizabeth von Arnim
First published: 1922
Rating: ★★★★☆
Extremely enjoyable if you like slow books in which the inner voices of the characters are what matters.
Music of the Ghosts
Author: Vaddey Ratner
First published: 2017
Rating: ★★★★★
This is one of those books that is a learning experience for those like me, who are almost completely unfamiliar with the history of far-away Asian countries, but more importantly it is a beautiful, sensitive, and painful story. Unlike the author´s previous In the Shadow of the Banyan it offers some detachment from the brutal years of Khmer Rouge and gives its characters some comfort and ultimately a chance of healing from the trauma they had gone through. Just like its predecessor, it moved me, terrified me, and made me love humanity - so scarce in humans - even more.
The Bell Jar
Author: Sylvia Plath
First published: 1963
Rating: ★★★★☆
This one is difficult to review... On one hand one cannot take away that the book is gut-wrenching and the author´s own mental illness gave her a unique position to describe depression and subsequent hospitalization (as it looked like back in the day). On the other hand, the first few chapters bored me and the casual racist remarks definitely irked me. I guess one has to understand this book is important in how mental health has been discussed (or not) and it drew attention to the issues previously not spoken in "polite" society.
House of Many Ways
Author: Diana Wynne Jones
First published: 2008
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Unfortunately, just the first book in this series was worth reading.

do you have an update on the con-tent of how to have a perfect marriage? x
Sorry it took so long! Had to wait for audible credit day :P
Right - the breakdown.
Background on the show:
'How to Have a Perfect Marriage' is a radio drama, 4 series, each 5 episodes around 13mins each. The whole thing is available as an omnibus on audible - I couldn't find a free source as it's no longer on the BBC Radio 4 website.
The plotline revolves around Jack and Karen, who have two teenage daughters and are settled into their marriage. However, Jack has been struggling with his sexuality since university, when he had an affair with his professor (Ben) and is now ready to come out as gay. The series follows him as he comes out to Karen and gets a boyfriend (Tom) whilst still trying to make his marriage to Karen work. He remains friends with Ben in the present, who kind of provides a sounding board/gay wisdom.
Con's role:
Con O'neill plays Ben in series 1 ONLY. There was around a 2 year gap between that and s2, during which they re-cast the part to John Sessions (who plays the character older and cattier in my opinion - also I think the writers forgot the name of Ben's boyfriend because it seems to change between Simon/Steven but remains the same character?).
Con is in 3 of the 5 episodes of series 1 and has some great lines in his roughly 5 mins of combined airtime. (If you're familiar with Val in Uncle or Cliff in Cucumber - blend those two together and that's basically his baseline here). Very cheeky. (Special mention for use of the phrase 'rumpy-pumpy' which doesn't get enough press in my opinion).
At first I was like, YAY! a happy queer character! But (SPOILERS) Ben suffers a stroke in the latter part of s1 and is determined to have serious health issues, which he asks Jack to keep from his boyfriend/fiancé - phenomenally acted. But ouch.
Thoughts on the show so far:
I listened to the first 2 series last night because I couldn't sleep. It's really well acted and covers the complex relationships really well.
I will say that I LOATHE Jack with a passion at the moment. He really craps all over Karen, especially when she gets a boyfriend of her own (the hypocrite). I could understand his possessiveness even if it wasn't justified, but (and this is possibly down to the condensed episode lengths) after Ben has a STROKE and is rushed to hospital, Jack shows up to literally dump all his relationship drama on his friend who has only just regained the power of speech. - AH move.
I am invested in it now and will probably finish it, but I really wish Con was in more of it, because his version of Ben was a lot more likeable.
