💢 For every Marvel movie, stay for the end-credit scene(s) 💢
I LOVE THIS MAGNIFICENT FILM; A MUST-SEE/EXPERIENCE IN THEATERS! @eternals is another beautiful masterpiece, different from any other Marvel film in the best ways thanks to brilliant director @chloezhao and the entire talented cast and crew! An epic tale of astonishing new characters that illuminate the screen and a well-written, layered story with depth and heart that takes its time to captivate you into their incredible world. It's a moving and stunning film, vast with mind-blowing and eye-popping gorgeous real locations, visuals and cinematography, and a well-crafted choreography that is both mesmerizing and cultivating. I love the characters and the relationships they share with one another, humanizing themselves amongst a massive scale of wonderful and rich storytelling. And the post-credit scenes makes me even more excited for what's to come. Eternals is a movie that has opened up a whole new world in the MCU, in which it will continue to expand and flourish, and I cannot wait! ❤️
This film doesn't deserve the hate it's receiving, but glad the audience loves it more. It's a shame and sad that it's mainly being targeted and judged by people who feel strongly against/disapprove of the LGBTQ+ community and its diversity in this phenomenal film. It's one thing criticizing it for being different, for instance (though, what's to complain about if people whine about that too?), but for being narrow-minded and ignorant is at another level of appalling.
To show representation in all forms of entertainment and life shows people that they're not alone and they're just as important as everyone else. I love that Marvel showed, once again, the beauty of representation in a spectacular film such as the Eternals and in everything else to come! 💖

Eternals: Never Let The Party Start!
I had heard nothing good about this movie.
Tumblr media
NOTHING! I heard that there was an unnecessary sex scene, but I didn't hear anything good about that either. Don't worry... I mean the sex scene is there, but it's nothing for the parents to be concerned about - concerning nudity. It does feel like the sex scene goes on longer than it actually is. I’m picturing families around the globe all awkwardly watching Disney’s dull, unnecessary sex scene. At least if it was Disney’s loud, graphic, nasty sex scene that horrified children, that would be something to talk about - BUT NOTHING! Nothing good!
Putting that (which is nothing good) aside, perhaps it'll still be good. Just think about this cast:
Kumail Nanjiani (Buff AF)
Tumblr media
(seriously, the veins in his arms are ridiculous)
They resurrected Angelina Jolie (bonafide ass-kicker)
Tumblr media
Salma Mutha Bleepin Hayek!
Tumblr media
My main man,  Brian Tyree Henry, known by "Atlanta" fans as "Paper Boi"
Tumblr media
That sexy ass dude from "Game of Thrones" that your wife would admit to your face that she'd leave you for
Tumblr media
And did I mention Salma Mutha Bleepin Hayek??!
Eternals - Who are they? And why should we care?
They're pretty much like any other team that has issues, but always unite just in time to save the day: The X-Men, The Avengers, The Muppets
Tumblr media
- just more powerful then those groups.
There's always someone with super speed, one with strength, one who's a psychopath and skilled with weapons, a Superman wannabe. They're all here, and more; even Sexy GOT Guy
Tumblr media
- although he doesn't have any revealed powers YET, unless you count being charming. That's not all that useful in battle though. Probably why he's not in the movie all that much. The woman he's with in that pic is one of the main characters, and everyone knows a person's side-action can't be involved in your main story.
We should care about them, because they're earth's protectors. They've been protecting mankind from creatures called "Deviants" The people at the party who get too drunk.
Tumblr media
The people who don't cover their mouth when they're feeling sick, and walk around wiping snot on their sleeves.
Tumblr media
Those people putting boogers underneath of tables and on walls.
Tumblr media
Real nasty stuff!
But, they look like this -
Tumblr media
The Eternals find time to get some messages across between fighting Deviants as well. Upfront, there's a diverse cast. There's a message about protecting your family. There's a mental illness part of this story too, that I appreciate. And some climate change action. They've even got Greta Thunberg up in here :)
Tumblr media
I thought it really was her at first. I was like "Oh shit! Greta is tired of all the bureaucracy. She dun collected the infinity stones and crew, and is PISSED!" (actually 14 year old actress Lia McHugh. She's really good in this!).
The Greta plot line would have been better, cuz even with this talented cast (all good btw), the monsters, the messages, and the Marvel budget - this movie is kinda boring. Not “I’m about to fall asleep” boring, but a “oh that’s cool, so is that... that’s ok.... cool I guess.... ok, let’s get on with it” kind of boring. The production and cast are great, but... I found myself watching this with a “meh” expression for most of it.
Tumblr media
I mean look at this picture again.
Tumblr media
None of them are even doing anything. At least get your pose on or flex, smirk, give me the finger... SOMETHING! Convey any emotion at all! Nope. They're just going to stand there.
Not just boring, but gloomy.
It has a "GOT" vibe to it - that could be good news or bad, depending on who you are.
I don't say this just because of the look, the dragon looking deviants,  Kit (the sexy GOT side-action), Magic, a character named Sersi (tho spelled diff) banging a person they call family, or someone sitting on a throne. It's the constant war-mode. Even when they're not fighting, they're still emotionally fighting, and scheming. There's some funny here and there (mostly provided by Kumail and Paper Boi), but not enough, and not enough time for the audience to see relationships forming. Even with the sex scene, to the audience, the two people just met. "Didn't y'all skip some steps?! Are you THAT horny?! Don't you have a mission?!"
There's brief levity and then back to the doom and gloom. And like "GOT" they've got no shortage of scenes with the background music of creepy monks, sopranos, and an ominous string section.
Ultimately, this movie is ok. I'm glad it exist. I'm glad I saw it, but I'm not in a hurry to see it again. There are those who criticize this movie, saying it has the dark, sad feel of a DC movie, and those people are mostly right.
It just feels like a waste of talent:
You had Jolie, fresh with frustration concerning her ex. You could have named one of the Deviants "Brad". Let an action scene between her and him get brutal, and really announce that she's back!
Kumail is very funny, but he needed a partner in comedy, and more scenes.
This guy
Tumblr media
- not funny. He looks tired. There’s no funny in that face. That face says “Shoot me.”
Let's replace him with... idk, this guy has been making me laugh, recently.
Tumblr media
Why can't Tim Robinson be an Eternal? He's not quite in shape, but he's hilarious, and that's what this movie needs. On that note of being "in shape", why did Kumail get so buff? I thought that he was going to have some shirtless scenes or have super strength, and some badass fighting scene moments... nah, he hangs back and shoots energy balls from his hands. You don't need to be fit to do that.  My man T.Rob here could have done that! They could have at least brought Buff Kumail in for the sex scene!
They probably had some Marvel money left over that had to be spent, and he raised his had first. Imagine if Greta here, got the chance to be Marvel-buff.
Tumblr media
There's apparently  a big deal being made (in Gulf Nations) over a gay couple in here who kiss. I think Marvel should have leaned into it... literally, and made the unnecessary sex scene an unnecessary gay sex scene. All kinds of close-ups, as an F U to the Gulf.
I will say that this movie will make you feel some things.  As I said, the acting is very good. If this flick had more emotional-ups in it, the harsh feelings in here would have it even harder.
Grade: C+
Idk if there's going to be a sequel. They've certainly set it up to have one. I'm reminded of Thor. The 1st movie was good enough. The 2nd - yuck, but then they found their way to some fun adventure and comedy in the 3rd. Perhaps Eternals just needs some time to evolve. Maybe get a sequel with Kumail, Paper Boi, and Greta going on a wacky, comedic adventure. Perhaps they get bored with saving the world and decide to simply have fun all of the time. Like, aggressively fleeing opportunities to save the day, and preferring debauchery instead. Then, maybe you’ve got something.
It could be Marvel's "The Hangover".

Eternals (2021)
Tumblr media
I won't say that the Eternals aren’t worthy of a $200 million+ epic but there's a reason it took Marvel 26 movies before they decided to introduce them.
For 7,000 years, the superpowered Eternals - Ajak (Salma Hayek), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), and Thena (Angelina Jolie) - have protected humanity against the Deviants: monstrous creatures who hunt intelligent life. As their mission came to a close, the family of heroes splintered and drifted apart. When the Deviants return in the present day, Sersi must convince the heroes to band together once more.
The issue isn't the choice to focus on C to D-list characters; it's the execution. We have a whopping ten protagonists. Even with the 157-minute running time, that's too many because we also have to deal with the relationships that bind the Eternals together, their creator and deity Arishem (David Kaye), secrets and revelations about the Eternals’ past, and the Deviants. Out of everyone, the monsters fare worst by far. Their designs aren’t interesting - they’re just generic animalistic greyish CGI creations - their motivations aren’t either - they’re just monsters - and ultimately, you could've omitted them entirely.
Most frustrating is that you can see the film it could've been. The climax requires the Eternals to make a great sacrifice. Their victory or defeat will have weight either way. You can see hints of complicated relationships between characters like Sersi and Ikaris, who were together for hundreds of years before breaking up. The Eternals’ immense lifespans mean they see time and humanity differently than anyone in the Marvel Universe so far. The design of Arishem and the other celestials evokes both awe and fear. You can tell by the inclusive cast and the hints at a vast mythology that everyone believed in the project wholeheartedly. Too bad no one could ever call it their favorite chapter of the MCU.
Though known for her intimate, low-to-the-ground films, director Chloé Zhao's presence is still felt - which only disappoints further. It’s a tale that’s simultaneously epic and personal, that focuses on godlike beings more realistically than we’ve seen before. These qualities are drowning in an overlong, overcomplicated plot and easter eggs/clues that make Eternals feel like it's more concerned with setting up future movies than telling its own. The best example is Dane Whitman (Kit Harington), Sersi's there-then-gone boyfriend. His time should’ve been given to Kingo’s human valet, Karun (Harish Patel), who, upon learning that the world is about to end basically shrugs his shoulders. He doesn’t even try to convince the Eternals to save the world. If he doesn’t care, why should we?
Eternals isn’t boring but it never sparks or shines. The characters aren’t bland but you'll forget them right away. I’m sure everything set up here will pay off later but I doubt many will be in a hurry to see the titular characters again. (Theatrical version on the big screen, November 8, 2021)

Review : Eternals (2021)
Tumblr media
It looks like the MCU is finally regaining the momentum it lost during the 2020 pandemic, as 2021 has found us the recipients of several new MCU episodic series and a large handful of films, with more of each coming before year’s end.  Out of all the projects announced in the past few years, it seemed that Kevin Feige held a special place in his heart for Eternals, as his feelings and promotion of the project indicated a possible bit of growth and majority for the MCU.  It didn’t hurt that Chloe Zhao, the director tapped for the project, ended up having a monumental and positively career-shifting 2021 as her film Nomadland broke nomination and award-winning records throughout the year.  November rolled around, bringing the moment of truth for Eternals in terms of receptions : the MCU audience and critical reception.
youtube
Eternals is certainly not MCU perfection despite its lofty aspirations, grand narrative posturing and extensive list of high-level names attached, but it does plenty of things quite well, making it as positive an experience as it is a unique one within the MCU canon.  First and foremost, the idea of the Eternals being sent on a mission with different levels of disclosure in terms of motives and goals immediately creates tension in a situation that, on paper, is deeply lacking tension.  With each Eternal not only being infinitely powerful, but having a nearly infinite life expectancy as well, one would think that any sense of tension or deep drama would be lacking, but the fact that the Eternals are not just overpowered carbon copies of one another adds a hierarchical subtext that plays on three levels : the in-film reality, the unspoken hierarchy the characters create in their minds, and most importantly to us, the viewer hierarchy created as we learn information about each character.  Opposite the Eternals are the Deviants, whose presence serves as purpose for the Eternals, which makes the eventual return and sentience gained by the Deviants a jumping off point for the eventual emotional sentience and narrative arcs of each Eternal.
Another interesting aspect of Eternals is the way it keeps true to the comic’s very on the nose naming etymology, instantly giving every character an archetypical foundation to build upon.  Sersi shares many aspects with Circe of Homer’s The Odyssey, right down to transformation abilities and an affinity for living amongst mortals.  Ikaris is perhaps the most on the nose of the entire gang, with his pride and personal lack of leadership fulfillment serving as him symbolically flying too close to the sun up until the point he (SPOILER ALERT) literally flies into the sun.  Kingo pretty perfectly breaks down Sprite during one of their in-film interactions.  Gilgamesh shares many similarities with his Mesopotamian counterpart, including overwhelming strength and an affinity for deep friendship with warriors gone wild.  Phastos is similar to Hephaestus, the Greek god of the forge... Makari is based on Mercury, and both share speed as well as a penchant for collection and delivery... Thena is obviously based on the Greek goddess Athena, and at one point, I believe she leans on a statue of Athena... it goes on and on, perhaps even deeper than I understand, but it definitely keeps the character dynamics interesting.
Unfortunately (but not detrimentally), there are aspects of Eternals that are extremely distracting to the point of disrupting suspension of disbelief, though not enough to totally derail the experience.  Despite this film’s insistence on being a theatrical release with delayed streaming (which is earned based on the directorial prowess of Chloe Zhao), Eternals will more than likely find its crowd in a realm where viewers can sit down and really concentrate on the positive aspects without the distraction of other moviegoers.  In terms of distractible aspects, it may just be nitpicking, but two specific instances sent me down a brief spiral : the multiple instances of D.C. Comics characters being mentioned, and the moment where Kit Harrington (known to most as Jon Snow) professing his love for Sersi of the Eternals team, which is made doubly weird when you realize that Sersi is deeply intertwined with Richard Madden, eldest of the Stark children.  I’m also not sure why the Deviants of Eternals share the same name with a major title applied to the characters of the Loki Disney + series... to my knowledge, they share no other connection than name, but with the Loki deviants being so high profile, it’s odd to give them any connection to beings on par with the Eternals.  There also seems the be a very continually conspicuous use of powers, not to mention the very free sharing of both the existence and key information about the Eternals by both Sprite and Kingo.
Snagging Chloe Zhao on the heels of her Best Picture win for Nomadland was quite the score for the MCU, and her directorial prowess can be seen throughout the majority of the Eternals runtime.  Her ability to adapt and integrate her set of skills into the MCU largely shows in her amazing shot compositions, with her long lenses and panoramic framing resulting in many painteresque establishing shots and character presentations.  The gold-based magic that powers each of the Eternals abilities is rendered with expert-level subtle CG work overlaid onto spacesuits that are shaped futuristically while mirroring the cultural and historical influence of each character.  The score sticks to the standard MCU script, leaning into a symphonic menagerie full of individual theme shifts intermingled into a shared music presentation, with a handful of old school deep cuts chosen for soundtrack cues.  While not a bad script, the writing is the main area where Eternals lacks, but that is not due to any issues with included elements so much as it is a case of writers biting off a bit more than they can chew in terms of information dissemination.  Eternals, despite its overarching implications, plays largely as a background piece to the more popular events of the MCU, almost as if the film was made solely to provide shared universe exposition and fill-in for any logical gaps people may have in regard to other films, though it does this sparingly in all honesty.
Gemma Chan is the heart of the film, serving as a figurehead of the Eternals team and a frontline element despite her power set revolving around non-aggressive transformation, making her a key piece of the puzzle involving world destruction.  Opposite her is love interest and fellow figurehead Richard Madden, whose overpowered skill set matches his cocky demeanor and loner status within the team, positioning him as one of the most conflicted team members.  Rounding out the figurehead team is the always graceful and motherly presence of Salma Hayek, who leads the team with her healing sensibility, ability to connect with all and her wise nature.  Lia McHugh nearly matches the conflicted nature of Madden with her eternally youthful presence serving as an insurmountable hurdle despite her deeply adult longings and shortcomings.  Kumail Nanjiani brings his humor to the table while still managing to exude heroic tendencies, channeling his egotistical presence into an overly confident hero with an image fixation.  Bryan Tyree Henry and his character’s vast wealth of knowledge is used to not only fuel the pain he carries via the burden of knowledge leading to suffering, but compounds it into a deep and protective love for his family and team.  Barry Keoghan is one of the most charismatically morose actors I’ve ever seen, and this ability is played to perfection as he struggles with infinite restraint and frustration.  Lauren Fidloff brings a heroic, no-nonsense directness to her speedster characterization, with a bonus of her ASL-based performance being the way it  has raised the awareness and popularity of sign language for the masses.  Angelina Jolie applies her high celebrity profile to her character’s warrior spirit, with Thena’s in-film notoriety and skill paralleling that of Jolie’s.  Rounding out the Eternals team is Don Lee, whose charm and personable nature match his powerful fighting ability.
With such a massive list of leads, it’d be easy for the remainder of the cast to be overshadowed, there are plenty of other notable actors and performances throughout Eternals.  Bill Skarsgård channels similar energy to that of James Spader’s Ultron portrayal, mixing a sense of wonder that comes with a world of discovery into a deeply ingrained savageness.  David Kaye lends a booming, omnipresent vocal performance to his Celestial portrayal.  Kit Harrington is a bit one-note in his performance, but this seems like a bit of straw-manning for what will turn out to be a bigger performance down the road.  Haaz Sleiman and Esai Daniel Cross help Brian Henry Tyree show his sensitive, unconditional love with their family portrayal, while appearances by Zain Al Reefa, Harry Styles and Patton Oswalt in a pairing that promises plenty of laughs, and an uncredited vocal appearance by Mahershala Ali close out the cast.
It’s hard to really put a definitive set of thoughts to Eternals, as it is a tall order to take in with a lack of familiarity to such an obscure moment in the Marvel Comics legacy.  The over-serious tone that hangs around the film often undercuts the attempts at humor, which in turn makes the film a bit tonally unsure of itself despite its grand posturing.  While it is a beautiful film to observe, I’ve started thinking about moments in the future where I’d revisit Eternals within the context of the overall MCU, and outside of this being the very first film one would watch in a chronological arrangement, I wouldn’t know where to place it in terms of the other films.  While the characters teased in the post-credit scenes are interesting, I’m wondering who else I will see in the MCU outside of Phastos, unless Kevin Feige and company have plans of revisiting Eternals in future films.  If you’re a completist like me, then go check out Eternals, but if you’re a casual MCU fan or new to the films, save this one for Disney +.

The Lodge (2019)
Tumblr media
Look past the properly-set-up-but-still-improbable development The Lodge features 2/3 of the way through. Focus instead on the atmosphere, the dread permeating throughout, and the scenes you only see peeking through your fingers.
Still reeling from their mother’s death and upset over their father’s choice to remarry, Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh) are left alone with their soon-to-be stepmother Grace (Riley Keough) over the Christmas holidays. Their father, Richard (Richard Armitage), hopes quality time in the rural cabin while he finishes some last-minute business will do them all some good. After a snowstorm, unexplainable events seemingly tied to Grace’s past put their lives at risk.
This is a moody, eerie film. Right away, it plays with your psyche. Grace met Richard while he was researching the extremist Christian cult who raised her. Images that in another story would signify salvation invoke fear. A crucifix on the wall makes the voice of her long-dead father (Danny Keough) echo through Grace's head. Every time we see the portrait of Mary in the kitchen, the cracks in the varnish grow more pronounced. A loving mother becomes a ghoul. When Mia prays for her dead mother or blesses a meal, it’s a reminder of a death narrowly escaped. At every turn, all you can think of is the grainy footage captured when the 12-year-old was discovered among the bodies of her former congregation years ago. A sudden blare of organ music startles you not because it’s a loud noise. It’s disconcerting because you're reminded of a church. In this movie, there’s nothing more frightening. Except maybe the lodge at night. It’s like everything about it has been selected to chip away at Grace’s sanity.
You’re unsure if the unease you feel comes from Grace’s head or if there's supernatural goings-on. There’s something not right about Aidan and Mia. He’s nasty when he’s not passive-aggressive. She’s obsessed with this doll that’s clearly an effigy for her dead mother (played by Alicia Silverstone in flashbacks). This whole scenario rubs you the wrong way. You’re not sure how to feel about anyone. Is Grace being punished for “breaking up” Richard and Laura’s marriage? Is this an opportunity for the new mom to prove herself? Is it all tied to her past trauma, or is it a coincidence? You don't know. Finding out means facing your fears but what kind of horrors await? Is this all psychological? Is there a ghost haunting Grace? If so, whose?
The camerawork, moody color palette, and sound design all work together to prop up an excellent script. Riley Keough, in particular, is alternatively vulnerable, sympathetic, panic-inducing, and terrifying. Your eyes are glued onto her every move and emotion. Are certain aspects of the story improbable? Yes. You have to look at this less as a "could it happen" and instead as a "what would happen"? Does plausibility matter when the end results are this effective anyway? The Lodge will have you sweating just looking at a dark corner. That’s the mark of an excellent horror film. (November 9, 2020)
