Big news! Looks like a leaker has revealed that MAPPA potentially plans to shelve Yuri on Ice: Ice Adolescence.
There is now a petition to ask that MAPPA give an official statement about the movie and the status of the potential franchise.

NOOOOOOO.
So, the worst case has happened. MAPPA canceled YOI: ICE ADOLESCENCE.
Tumblr media
Funfact: YOI made MAPPA big. Cancelling the movie of the anime that got them where they're now... Wonder what went on behind the scenes and how much of the movie is done?

can someone earnestly tell me what MAPPA had made before YOI that made them so popular because everything I can think of is after Yuri on Ice!!! and it makes me really mad that they neglected this show because they forgot where they came from. I’m actually really upset with this!! We loved this show and came together to see something special and now it feels like it is gone :’( I’m so sad

Call it OA or anything of the sort but new viewers will not know how big of a thing YoI was in 2016. It basically had Tumblr on a chokehold for two years and when the infamous episode 7 aired, Crunchyroll literally broke down. It was the dark horse anime of the season. No one had any expectations from it but it still ended up being so beloved by viewers and brought together multiple communities: the otaku community, the ice skating community, and the LGBT+ community. For many people, including myself, it was not just a series but something that gave everyone a place to belong. The fandom spaces were filled with nothing but support. People were discovering and rediscovering their passions because of the anime and it was just such a wonderful time. It was also when LGBT+ representation in media was still scarce so having (heavily implied) gay characters on a mainstream anime was a big deal. I remember an incident when Kubo-sensei receiving hate mails from some viewers saying that the show was not realistic enough bc where tf was the homophobia?? To which Kubo-sensei answered that the world already had so much of it that she wanted to create a world where love could flourish without the hate. And it made me appreciate the show even more. Kubo-sensei and Sayo-san were such beloved figures to the community. It was because of their dedication that we could witness something wonderful on screen.
So, yeah. I think I just want to say that I might never find it in my heart to overcome my dislike toward MAPPA. YoI is one of the animes that put their name in the map today. It was because of two women had a dream they wanted to share. It was because of the fandom who forgave every flaw and has patiently waited for the "Next Stage" even after eight years. It was because of the hope to witness more about the two L's of these characters. And yet it was all for naught.
I will always love YoI. It will always have a special place in my heart. And I will forever be saddened that we will never see Yuri Katsuki win gold.
It was a beautiful journey. Until Next Stage, History Makers. 💕

Y’all please do not forget that Mappa has become one of the most notoriously unethical anime studios in the business. Whether victim of a bad contract with YOI or not, Otsuka is still a greedy bastard who is CEO of a studio where animators get paid like a pack of instant ramen an hour.
And regardless of how much money YOI or AoT or JJK makes, the animators are still overworked and still making the same shit rates as ever. The money does not trickle down. Don’t defend Mappa.

A Ramble about Ice Adolescence & the Franchise as a Whole
Myself and the team behind #MappaWhereisYOI and its petition do not believe that delays and silence on Ice Adolescence are because of the creators. I personally think it has everything to do with the studio and the distributor. If the creator and director are involved in any way, it’s probably because they refused to compromise their vision at one point or another.
As we all know, the intellectual property is dead. There is no new official art or merchandise has been released in years outside of collaborations with contracts sign forever ago. There are no advertisements for it. The most we get these days are tweets to celebrate character birthdays - likely pre-programmed bots.
Part of me believes that Mappa and Avex have let it fade away on purpose. If no one remembers Yuri!!! on Ice, no one will be knocking on their doors asking where the movie is and why they were unable to complete this project. No one will be doubting their abilities to see started projects through to the end. Did the doping scandal, COVID and war impact the movie? Probably, but the delays started before that.
The other part of me believes that, after everything, they don’t think it would be profitable to put the movie out anymore even if it was ready. It has been six years since it was announced, after all. Admittedly, the fandom is not as concentrated as it once was, but if they dropped the full movie trailer tomorrow it would be different. They’d break the internet. The love for YOI is still there in people’s hearts - I see it on every viral tweet and tiktok.
That second part, that’s what I’m fighting for. It’s what I’m holding onto. If that’s the reason, I want to give Mappa and Avex the message that we all still care. That’s why I’m pushing this petition. It feels like the only thing we can do at this point, but I know, if we get enough buzz going about Yuri!!! on Ice and enough signatures, that we could potentially make a difference and save our beloved show.
If this resonates with you, please consider signing and sharing our petition!

Today's translation #476
Go Yuri Go!!!, Yuri!!! on ICE official fanbook, Hosoya Yoshimasa interview
Part 2.
-- You do you think is a rival of the character that you play?
H: I don't think that Otabek thinks about others as "rivals" that much, in general. I don't think that the feels that he is competing with somebody for getting better scores, or doing better performances. Watching the scenes, when he is saying his monologue, I thought that he rather wants to overcome the clumsy and mentally weaker old version of himself.
-- Please, tell us also something about Otabek and Yurio's interactions.
H: In the show, we see a scene, where Otabek says to Yurio, that Yurio is similar to him. After that he says his declaration of friendship, but in the screenplay, there was a note saying "he likes that in Yurio, that he is similar to him", so when I was playing my role, I was keeping that in mind. But as these two were talking, I couldn't stop thinking about Otabek's undercut, for some reason. I was wondering what actor would play the role of Otabek, if they were to make a live-action movie.
[Notes: YoI live-action movie...💀💀 Only if directed by Sayochin.
@thegirlwhorideslikeasamurai mentioning MAPPA in her reblog gave me some flashbacks 💀
Actually, it's very interesting that in 2019 Avex made another anime movie, Eiga no Osomatsu-san, which flopped (~6 oku yen at box office, for comparison, JJK movie made like 130-140 oku?), and they also managed to make fools of themselves, by claiming that they want at least 666666 people to see the movie and "let's count officially", but it ended up being close to "400000"... (I bet that's another reason, why they were even more wary of IceAdo, after the trailer also flopped, and theaters were like 90% empty). Both IPs' huge popularity was based on fujoshis mainly, and you can actually see that when people were commenting on that movie flop online, they also talked that "YoI is going to be next, bc fujos just get bored and move on..." In YoI's case, it's not that they just moved on, they actively started to hate the creators, and everything that they do, if it isn't 100% about Yuuri being the center of the universe, drawn in a way that they approve of (so in a """uke""" way). Too bad YoI is not a pixiv original fujo doujinshi (I know some people kind of forgot that it isn't), so their requests were actually never met properly 😞
But what's even more interesting though, is that unlike on YoI, they didn't give up on Osomatsu IP, even though it has been already dubbed "owakon", "finished content" by fandom in 2019... And made a live-action movie in 2022 starring Johnnys Smile-upers? ((I just looked it up how it came to be and oh boy, it seems that avex had quite close ties to a child predator with hundreds of victims, as multiple bands were under their label... (It's common for a big Jp entertainment-related company to have ties to him, but still... I never thought of it 🫠...))) So they went for a rebrand for that IP, you can say - now catering mainly to fans of boy idol groups. It's quite clear that YoI is treated.... Differently.]
