I am late with this one, and it's a bit all over the place, but i did it!

We will make this place our home by @leucisticpuffin is pure love. I discovered it on Christmas, and since then it has become very dear to my heart. Besides the absolute enchanting quality of its graceful and melancholic narrative, it has one of the most sweet and heart-wrenching depictions of Maedhros&Maglor relationship i've ever seen. So when i thought of what to draw for Respite, this scene from chapter 37 A Cry in the Dark was basically my only option.

This was definitely the right room. It was in a state of comfortable disrepair – clothes flung haphazardly over the chair, bottles and trinkets cluttering up the dresser, a pile of old records on the floor beside an enormous old gramophone – and Maglor and Maedhros were both sprawled over the too-narrow bed, Maglor curled up near the edge, Maedhros lying beside him half-covered in blankets. Red and grey-black hair muddled together on the pillow.

I spend a day drawing&drinking tea with @yonetee and then six hours on the train. I had a lot of time doodling weird over-rendered textures. So this image... happens to be.

For me, the most heartbreaking scene of Silmarillion: Maedhros and Maglor in the camp of Valar x_x

It is possible according to canon that Elrond and Elros were names given by Maedhros and Maglor based on where they found the twins; the names they were given by Elwing and Earendil are probably lost and forgotten. So consider:

Elrond meets Elwing in post-Fourth-Age Valinor. She calls him by the name she gave him, and he does not respond to it, for he has forgotten that name.

"Mano po."

Pagmamano (Tagalog) - "honouring-gesture;" a sign of respect towards elders

A continuation of sorts, of this other drawing I made of the Feänorians, which was roughly inspired by Filipino culture. I originally planned on completing this for @nolofinweanweek, specifically the first prompt about how Fingolfin and Feänor's families got along, but life got in the way and I didn't finish it in time. More background/my long rambles under the cut:

Pagmamano - touching the back of an elder's hand on one's forehead - is not restricted to family, but it's usually done in the context of elder family members. I have many memories of attending family reunions and being told to follow the other kids to "mano po" a grandfather, aunt, or uncle. While Elves don't have elderly relatives, per se, I thought this image was too fun not to draw. Also, I love envisioning Feänor as that cool uncle who gives the most amazing gifts but like, the kids are intimidated by him, so they have to be told (and supervised) by their parents to line up and greet him properly. Fingolfin's just standing there making sure his kids all greet their uncle. (Maedhros, presumably having already finished his greetings, is sidetracking Fingon.)

All this to say, I think that these guys didn't have the perfect relationship. But. You can't convince me Finwë didn't get the whole family together from time to time on some sort of family reunion camping trip. And Feänor just has to begrudgingly tolerate it because he can't say no to his dad. While the kids, obviously, have a great time.

The way Maedhros and Maglor are

They love each other. They are the only thing they have left (except for the Oath). They dont even need many words. They hate each other. They were for each other and are always there, a reminder of things lost. They speak right past each other. Neither of them can save himself and dont believe he can be saved, but the other one is another case. They cannot save each other, either. They cannot under any circumstances separate, and would do anything to ensure it.

And then they are separated.

Maedhros built up a high pain resistance from Angband; particularly to the burning sensation. Considering how low he thinks of himself, it’s likely he expected the Silmaril to burn him. He didn’t think he was redemptive, he thought I can take it.

Part of why Maedhros acts so viciously is because that’s how life treated him. I can take it if my brothers die. I can take it if I’m damned for eternity. I can take it if everybody thinks I’m a monster.

He’s proud, and he’s suffering. He won’t back down, he will succeed or be martyred.
