We went to California for a week or so last month and did some driving up and down the Pacific Coast Highway. Being back in the practice of making photos I couldn't resist the opportunity to lug my clunky, metal four pound Mamiya C33 along.

In my last post I shared photos from Massachusetts in December which might as well have been taken on a different planet entirely from this batch.

I've lived in Las Vegas for close to eight years now but despite that the trip last month was my first time seeing the Pacific Ocean, let alone the non-desert parts of California.

When I first moved out to Vegas I described it to my friends and family back home as like having landed on Mars but with casinos in the grocery stores. Seeing this part of California for the first time was similarly jarring.

Of course you have the fantastic ocean views, beach towns, and all that goes with them - sort of the stereotypical idea I've had of California for most of my life - but you also have these stretches of absurd green hills that make you feel like you somehow woke up in Windows XP.

All told, it was great to finally make it to the Pacific and I look forward to seeing even more of the coast someday soon.

What I love and hate about analog cameras is that every camera has a slightly different shooting process, it’s own tricks and tips, pros and cons, which are to get used to them and memorised. ⁣ ⁣ My Pentacon Six could randomly give 8-11 exposures instead of 12 and open up in bag by itself. With Mamiya C33 you had to additionally drive the release lever down after winding, that’s why only a single shot was exposed on my first film from it (shown in post). With Bronica, I loaded the film upside down my first time with it – all exposures were “taken” on backing paper. And so on. Although, with all difficulties, I love the result and feedback, so I keep going on.⁣ ⁣ I have drawn four most memorable cameras I had – with backgrounds being shots taken with them.⁣ ⁣ Olympus OM-10, Sheregesh, Zelenaya 2015⁣ Bronica GS-1, Altai, Aktru, 2020⁣ Mamiya C33, Nikola-Lenivets, Signal 2018⁣ Olympus XA, Kuzbass, Route R384, 2019⁣

It has been said that around 1962, Diane Arbus switched from a 35mm Nikon camera to a twin-lens reflex Rolleiflex camera and used this camera for most of her later work. But on this well known photograph of her (and actually all other ones I could find), she is clearly holding a Mamiya C33 Professional, produced between 1965-1969.
