Meet the original source of the flavouring know from toothpaste, mouthwash, and chewing gum - the spearmint plant (Mentha spicata). This plant thrives in shady spots in the garden during the summer. The distinctive taste and scent comes from the naturally occurring chemical R-(-)-carvone. The taste of genuine spearmint is far richer and more complex than its artificially flavoured version, and spearmint plants have been bred to have many different shades of flavour such as “chocolate mint” and “pineapple mint”. It’s an excellent tea herb and it combines well with many other fresh herbs from the garden. There is medical research supporting spearmint’s herbal medicine uses for digestive system issues and antimicrobial properties.

Moonacre Week 2023
Day 2: Strawberries and Mint
1523
When the sun shone on the red, red skin of the wild berries, their scent sweetened the air at the seam of the forest. Half-hidden beneath fern and moss, they gleamed like rubies on green brocade. The forest was dressed expensively; hundreds and thousands of them lined the edge of the woods at the far end of the valley, undisturbed by the animals who feared the traps, and the humans who feared each other.
Only the young human came here, the one who knew little about fear and all about strawberries. She came with the sun at noon, hair and cheeks and lips in varying shades of the berries’ red, and her dress as green as the leaves between which she knelt for her secret harvest. Only her eyes would not match the warm midday, cool and silver as they were.
She never did pick much, only a handful, and some more directly with her lips. Then, usually, she would hear her name called in the far distance; she would get up from her knees and brush off her skirt, and turn to the forest, a finger on her lips as if to ask for her secret to be kept. And she would run away, her quiet peals of laughter scattered in the grass between the strawberries.
The forest kept her secret as the meadow kept that of the boy who came at night. He came from the other side, from deep in the woods, and no sunlight ever led his way. His feet found the ground in silver moonlight as well as pitch-black darkness. He made no sound and was not seen, in his clothes of soft dark leather and linen, silver-metallic buckles fastened tight.
His fingers wandered through taller grass and fern until they found curly leaves and rubbed them, releasing the sweet, sharp scent into the night. One hand full, and not a stem more, was all he took, and sometimes a leaf found its way between his teeth, where the same sharp sweetness exploded on his tongue. If the moon then found his eyes, they shone in a strange honey-brown colour, as if to defy the cool, silvery darkness all around him.
He never found the sweet strawberries in the dark, and she never found the sharp spearmint among the foliage, and eventually they grew up to fear the edge of the forest as all the other humans did. Wasn’t it odd, that the sun knew the moon, and the meadow knew the forest, and the strawberries knew the mint, but they should never know each other?

A Builder, a Researcher, and a Rooftop, Ch. 7: Mentha spicata

Also on AO3
------------
From the bottom of the stairs, the builder could hear faint murmurs of conversation up on the roof. They could make out Qi’s sharp, accented voice, and another, less-familiar one. Who else was up there?
“Ah, there they are,” Qi said as they reached the landing. Next to him was Mint, lounging with his arms behind his head.
“Hey, builder.” Mint gave them a wave and a polite smile, which the builder returned.
“I invited Mint to our usual stargazing session this time, since he won’t be in town for much longer. I hope that isn’t too bothersome?”
“Nah, you’re good,” the builder said, taking a seat next to Mint. “Haven’t really gotten the chance to talk to Mint a whole lot.”
“Yeah, after the whole train station thing, I got super busy. Oh yeah, and you did too, with all the building and stuff. Thanks again for all that.”
“Wait, wait. The ‘train station thing’?” Qi frowned. “Mint, what happened?” The builder raised an eyebrow. Mint never told him?
“Oh…yeah,” Mint said, sheepishly scratching the back of his head. “Guess I forgot to tell you. You know me, heh heh…”
Qi was not amused. Mint took his silent glare as a cue to continue.
“Well, after I got off the train, there wasn’t anyone there to meet me. And I didn’t know where to go, either. And to top it all off, I could feel a nap coming on pretty fast.”
Qi let out an exasperated sigh. “Please don’t tell me you decided to fall asleep on an active train platform…”
“I mean, I didn’t really ‘decide’ to, but uh… I was already sitting on a pretty sturdy-looking bench, so…”
“And what happened after that?” Qi asked resignedly. Mint stammered, trying to find the easiest way to tell him that he nearly got hit by a train. Qi looked at the builder, expecting the answers from them.
They pursed their lips. “He rolled over and fell onto the tracks.” Qi tensed, a hard expression to conceal his fear. “I managed to pull him off just before a train pulled in.”
Qi groaned and shook his head. “Mint, I know it’s been years, but we’ve talked about this. Benches may be comfortable napping places, but they are also among the most hazardous for the very reason you witnessed at the station. A safer place would have been–”
“A flat, open space, away from any roads or monsters or dangerous machinery, I know,” Mint intoned. “The Civil Corps said the same thing.”
“For once, I agree with them. I’m at least relieved to see you uninjured. You as well, builder. Your proactive reflexes are commendable.”
“Yeah, thanks for uh…not letting me get run over by a train.”
The builder waved a hand. “I’m just glad you’re okay. I should be thanking you, too. You’re the only reason this bridge is open.”
“Aw, shucks. I just checked a couple meters. You guys made a good bridge, so I barely had to do anything.”
“Indeed,” Qi said. “Thanks to some very innovative construction techniques, we were able to produce a more than satisfactory result. Your duties helped to confirm that fact.”
“Innovative…yeah,” Mint chuckled. “I still can’t believe you guys used a robot to build a bridge.”
Qi sat up straighter and crossed his arms. “Indeed we did! Made by yours truly.”
“Ahem.”
“Right, right. Designed by yours truly, built by our mutual associate builder here.”
“Well yeah, no way anyone else designed it,” Mint grinned. “Only you could turn a doodle of a Gungam OC into an actual robot.”
“Ohhh, so that’s his own character. No wonder it was so obscure. Hey, you were right, Qi. It is something I never would’ve heard of!” The builder grinned, but it quickly faded when they looked up at Qi, his face drawn taut in the most horrified expression they’d ever seen on a human being. Was his face always that pale, or was that just the moonlight?
“Gotta admit, though,” Mint continued, oblivious to whatever ordeal Qi seemed to be going through. Looks kinda…bare-bones. Didn’t you have plans for a modular weapons system on there? Didn’t see any arm cannon or laser blade or anything…” He looked over at Qi, frowning at the look on his face. “Spacecase? You okay?”
The builder swallowed. They probably should salvage this one, should they?
“Ah come on,” they said, trying to make it casual. “We just made the thing. And we built it for bridge-building. We can add the cool lasers and pew-pew guns and stuff later.” The horror on Qi’s face faded a bit, taken over by light surprise.
“Ehm. R-right you are, builder!” he piped up, a hint of strain in his voice. “It was merely several weeks ago that we found the R47 Ultra. Having a working prototype Mobile Suit already is astounding progress. Hopefully in the future, with enough budget and loose-enough governmental scrutiny, we can create a fully-realized Mobile Suit!”
“If you say so…” Mint was still giving Qi a funny look.
The builder cleared their throat. “So Mint, you know about this whole ‘Gungam’ business already? I’m afraid I haven’t been…enlightened yet.”
“Oh yeah, we watched it all the time when we were kids. There were a whole bunch of giant robot shows out there, but Gungam was the best one, bar none.”
“…And it had the most content available,” Qi added quietly, eyeing the builder’s reaction carefully.
“Even so, they’ve only managed to recover a part of it. There’s still a couple gaps here and there.”
“I still remember the agony I felt when we realized the final episode of season 4 was never found.”
“I think that guy at the store never told us on purpose. We blew a month’s worth of pocket money on that.”
“I knew we shouldn’t have trusted him.”
“No you didn’t,” Mint scoffed. “You were the one begging for the ‘full’ disk set the second you saw it on the shelves. I just happened to have the last 15 gols you were missing.”
“Well, maybe you shouldn’t’ve given him the money then,” the builder said lightly.
“He was convincing.”
“It was a sound argument!” Qi blurted out, his previous trepidation vanishing. “It would have taken me approximately another week and 2 days to get the missing change, and that was with extra chores! Someone else could have had a wide window of time to claim it before then!”
“Still don’t think it was worth my 15 gols.”
“No, season 4 was worth much more than a measly 15. It would’ve been priceless with the finale…”
“So yeah,” said Mint to the builder. “Big fans.”
“Please tell me you guys made all sorts of replicas out of cardboard and stuff,” the builder laughed.
“You bet. We’d get old boxes and sticks and pretend to be Gungam pilots at recess. And we’d be building weapons and armor and stuff from whatever we could get our hands on. Blocks, paper, fish, anything!”
“Awww, that’s–” Adorable. “–sweet.”
The builder’s train of thought hit a pebble on the tracks. Why on earth was “adorable” the first word that came to mind…?
“I still have diagram drafts of things we built in case we ever find the right materials…” Qi muttered before they could dwell on it further.
“Well, if you guys can find R47 Ultras in these ruins, I’d say sky’s the limit.”
“Ideally, I’d like to go beyond the sky. But yes, with the likely existence of other powerful relics and a reliable builder on hand, there is potential for many more of our designs to come to fruition.” The builder felt a small swell of pride at the offhand praise.
“Save me a blaster then, if you make one,” Mint said with a fond smile.
The three of them kept talking well past midnight. Qi and Mint would recount their shenanigans as kids in Vega 5, while the builder listened and chuckled along.
After a while, Mint started to nod off. “Think I’m gonna…have to call it soon… I’m…” he trailed off with a yawn.
“Hey wait, don’t fall asleep up here!” the builder exclaimed. But the only response from Mint was a snore.
Qi clicked his tongue. “No use, builder. He’ll never hear you when his eyes are closed.” He grabbed one of Mint’s arms and threw it over his shoulder. “Can you get his other arm?”
They nodded and copied his motion. Together, they hoisted the limp, snoozing Mint up, and carefully brought him downstairs for the night.
“I can take it from here,” Qi said when they got to his front door. The builder shrugged Mint’s arm off their shoulder.
“Have a good night, then.”
“Same to you. Oh, and…thank you.” He gave them one last unreadable look before quietly shutting the door.
“Uh…you’re welcome…?” they muttered to no one. For a minute, they stared at the closed door, as if it would give them an answer. When they finally remembered to start walking home, all they could think about was that brief, but odd stare.
What was he thanking them for? It might’ve just been for helping him drag Mint downstairs, but what was with that look? That didn’t feel like a look for a small thank you. Was it for something earlier? He didn’t give them that look when he was thanking them for saving Mint’s life…
…Why were they thinking about this so hard?

Moon Tea in the ASOIAF Series
In the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and most recently in the first season of The House of the Dragon, a certain tea is mentioned as a form of birth control multiple times. But what is moon tea? According to Lysa Arryn, it's a tea made of "tansy and mint and wormwood, a spoon of honey, and a drop of pennyroyal" that is commonly used to end pregnancy (p. 1114, A Storm of Swords). All of these items can be found in our world. Although there is no record of this specific recipe of tea being used in the past, there is a history of these ingredients being used separately for medicinal purposes that include ending a pregnancy.
Tumblr media
Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is an herb that has been used medicinally since at least Ancient Greece. It has a light degree of toxicity that was useful in targeting internal parasites such as intestinal worms. During the Middle Ages and later, women were known to have consumed larger doses of tansy or tansy tea to end pregnancy. It appears that tansy was also once commonly used to add seasoning to dishes, as it has a specific bitter taste, and some continue to use it as an ingredient in recipes and teas today.
Tumblr media
Mint (Mentha spicata) is used today in teas and many other products. Its health benefits are widely recognized today. The Ancient Egyptians were the first to praise mint in 1550 BC and it has been used for a variety of purposes ever since. In a moon tea, this ingredient would likely be included to ease any nausea caused by other ingredients and improve the taste of the tea.
Tumblr media
Wormwood (Artemesia absinthium) is still used in teas today, and historically it had medicinal uses in treating upset stomach, among other ailments. Its inclusion in the moon tea recipe is likely to aid the help settle the stomach after drinking the tea.
Tumblr media
Honey has been used for its sweet flavor and health benefits for years. In traditional medicine, it is claimed to help with a number of ailments. In the moon tea, this would likely serve the role of helping to improve the taste and make the tea easier to go down.
Tumblr media
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) continues to be used in teas and was used in folk medicine to cause pregnancy loss. In 1993, Nirvana wrote a song called Pennyroyal Tea, referring to someone taking the herb to try to induce an abortion. Today, some people believe that pennyroyal tea can be a natural treatment for congestion, though the concentrated essential oil of pennyroyal should not be consumed; most essential oils are toxic when ingested, and this one can be lethal.
Tumblr media
In the ASOIAF series, these ingredients were relatively easy to come by, and to those living in Westeros, it was well-known that this specific tea was available to women who wanted to prevent or end pregnancy. Beyond Westeros, even the wildlings knew of the tea and its uses - Tormund told Jon Snow as much in A Storm of Swords: "if Ygritte does not want a child, she will go to some woods witch and drink a cup o' moon tea" (p. 209). It seems that women who had access to the tea could use it to prevent pregnancy with relatively little health effects or long term damage being done as long as the tea was correctly prepared. When prepared by someone highly skilled, such as a maester, this likely was more so the case. Not once is the tea mentioned as having deadly effects to its users. Rather, its usefulness and reliability at ending pregnancy in-universe is what is discussed throughout the series. Moon tea was widely available, highly reliable, and relatively safe to use when prepared correctly.

What is your favorite mint? Define mint as broadly or narrowly as you like. I think mine is lemon balm but I'm growing increasingly enamoured with "regular" mint. Ol girl just never, ever, ever quits no matter what conditions I (accidentally) subject her to!
When you say "Mint", Mint is Mentha to me rather than the "Mint Family" (Lamiaceae), ha. And honestly? I actually don't like Mint that much! I used to hate it, in fact; Mint used to hurt my teeth really bad before we found out that most of my tooth pain was from Fibro, and before I got all of the damage and decay fixed finally (a side effect of it being excruciatingly painful to care for them because of the Fibro).
I also discovered at one point that the Mint I actually had issue with was Sweet Mint (Mentha x Suavis). I loved Spearmint (Mentha Spicata), and I also found that I loved Chocolate Mint (Mentha × Piperita f. Citrata 'Chocolate') and've been obsessed with it ever since; I grow Chocolate Mint every year now, and there's a Mint and Lemon Potato Salad that I make from 'Rose Water and Orange Blossoms: Fresh & Classic Recipes from my Lebanese Kitchen' with it every summer that's just ... Heaven in a bowl, honestly.

Oghhh Ive been translating SO many of my oc names this is so so fun
One of my characters name actually ended up the same as Leafpool’s would likely be, russslof. My gal’s name is actually Mintspring, but spring as in the kind of water source, not jumping, so pond felt more fitting. I was less sure about her prefix—I figured hahrr for catmint would be a bit of an unusual name? So leaf felt like a more sensible choice.
My other favoritest fella would be Sipkawu, later Sipshai! I’m not sure kawu, for fuzzy, is a perfect fit—his warrior name is Brindletuft, after the distinctive fur texture that he and his mom share, that tends to stick up kind of ridiculously. It was either that or bach, but his fur is more soft and messy than spiky or coarse.
MINT! Mint is one of those things that is very interesting in Clanmew, and totally unrelated to catmint both linguistically and cladistically. Mint is completely harmless to humans and one of our favorite flavorings, but it's a very potent poison to cats!
There are three kinds of mint for you to choose from, if you'd like Mintspring's name to change!
WATERMINT (Mentha aquatica) = Mwash
Grows near water, very fragrant with large flowers. Abundant but difficult to cultivate, this is the species Clan cats collect (along with lavender) for parasite treatments when there's no salt. Be very very careful with how poisonous it is, though.
SPEARMINT (Mentha spicata) = Mwel
Hardier and grows in more areas, but has less flowers. This thing cannot stop spreading, it will take over an entire area if there's nothing around to beat it back. Can also be used as a repellant, but water and pepper are more useful.
PEPPERMINT (Hybrid between spearmint and watermint) = Mwelash
Definitely the most fragrant, displaying hybrid vigor between its parent species. If Clan cats were ever cultivating mint for use in gardens and as insect repellent, it would be peppermint.

hello! this is a ship child of mint and flare!.
Tumblr media
Mentha, the first part of Mentha spicata subsp. citrata which is a strawberry mint.
(i wish i could make them digitally but my phone screen and my patience is too small for that)
they indeed does have a strawberry and scoop of ice cream. there is a strawberry sause that mixes with the ice cream (idk what flavor to have it..). the strawBerry's leaves are similar to their dad, flare's fire. however they dont grow insize and its hard to tell unless your actually looking.
they prefer their long sleeved hoodie, that has fake plastic claws on them. it can change its words kinda like fresh sans' (who Mentha actually enjoys messing with. ) but unlike fresh swear words will appear like "fuck", " fuck yeah!", "fuck no!", "...shit".. often when they are in trouble, think of a bad, but funny plan or hears someone else say a dangerous plan.
Mentha prefers they/them/theirs or it/its but will use he/him/his for people who dont know how to use his prefered ones.
Mentha, dispite pulling pranks and liking to cause trouble, hates confrontation. hence them having separate pronouns for those who dont know how to use their preferred ones.
they dont speak much. their sentences tend to be short and to the point.
they struggle with regulating their empathy. what i mean is that they'll be unable to comfort you over a dead family member or a break up but will be sobbing with you over your dead pet, missing stuffed animal, or anything small.
blanket horder. you better hide your blankets when they aren't in use, they will jump aus just to stell a blanket.
can stay in the anti void but its too white so expect them to be making a blanket fort or near any source of colour, like error's bean bag...
mint belongs to @hheisa
flare belongs to @melaton1nx

Mega MINT Mix Seeds Collection, Huge Varieties (Mentha) Herb Heirloom Non-GMO, Easy to Grow, Super Fragrant #50 Countless beneficial insects are absolutely enchanted by mint, while many pesky garden pests are repulsed by it. Growing mint from seed is a lesson in the beauty of chaos in the natural world, as the busy activity of insect pollinators causes a wide spectrum of mint flavors. We love the element of surprise in growing mint from seed. While the flavors may range from spearmint to peppermint or applemint, the purported medicinal and pest-repelling benefits remain the same. Perennial from zones 4-9, mint will thrive in most gardens. It is quite competitive and belongs in the herb bed or in a contained location. Many folks simply clip the leaves and use them as mulch around plants in the vegetable garden to harness the pest-repelling benefits without letting this aggressive plant grow in the vegetable garden. Mint is easy to cultivate and has a wide variety of culinary and medicinal uses. It can be used in any savory dish that calls for mint and is perfect in sweet dishes and in teas for cleansing the palate and re-energizing the body after a meal. Not sure which mint to buy? This mint variety mix would be perfect for you! Seeds are not individually packaged according to variety but are packaged in one envelope for this listing, please see other listings for individual varieties. As a general rule, mint family plants root vigorously when allowed to grow freely and can be invasive. Grow them in containers to keep them in check. Sweetly aromatic, mint, can be used in both cooking and in potpourri and other fragrant decorative items. Mint herb is used to make mint jellies and sauces and of course, tea! Spearmint also has medicinal benefits as well. It is a wonderful addition to the garden that can easily be started with mint herb seeds. This perennial herb grows to 3 feet tall and spreads rapidly to indefinite widths. The 2 - 3 1/2 inch lance-shaped leaves are a unique wrinkled texture. Oblong terminal spikes of lavender-pink flowers appear all summer. Like other mints, mint plants are extremely easy to grow. In fact, they grow so well, it is best to confine them to containers. Every three years mint plants should be divided and re-potted in fresh soil and compost to maintain healthy growth. The plants are hardy and will die back to the ground in winter. Top dress with compost in autumn if the plants are not lifted annually. 4-12 hours of Sun Sprouts in 10-14 Days Ideal Temperature: 55-90 Degrees F Seed Depth: Surface Sow Frost Hardy: Yes USDA Zones: 4 - 11 Height: 24 inches Bloom Season: Early summer Environment: Partial shade Soil Type: Moist, well-drained, pH 6.1 - 7.8 Germination Rate 90% SOIL Germination Temperature: 70 - 85F Depth: Press seed onto the surface of the soil, do not cover Sowing Rate: 1 seed per inch Moisture: Keep moist until germination Plant Spacing: Rows 12 - 24 inches apart; thin seedlings 12 inches Count: ~50 Mentha mix Heirloom NON-GMO, Perennial, Easy to Grow, Super Fragrant, Rich Flavor Attracts Pollinators Attracts bees and butterflies Repels pests Aromatic Growing Mint From Seed: How To Plant Mint Seeds Mint requires light to germinate. If you buried the seeds or even covered them lightly, they might not germinate. Likes soil temp approx 70°F/20-22C°. Mints also generally do not transplant very well and do better direct seeded into the garden or pot where they will remain. Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost in your area. Keep the soil moist but not soggy with an ideal temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Mint seeds should sprout in 10-16 days. Bottom heat will speed germination. If starting mint seeds outdoors, sow seeds on the surface of prepared soil and cover them with a light layer of vermiculite. The seeds are tiny, but you can space them with a seed injector or simply thin the seedlings once germinated. Paper towel method: Scatter mint seeds on a wet paper towel, put the towel in a zip top bag, and taping the bag to a window. It will take 2 weeks for them to germinate! Paper towels are designed to be durable, although they will break down eventually. The roots will poke right through the paper towel. Some roots are very fine and still manage to grow through. When germinating seeds this way, I started with the seeds at least 1/2 inch apart on the paper towel so their root systems didn’t overlap. When it was time to plant the seedlings, I separated them by cutting the paper towel into pieces, each seedling and its root system on its own piece. The bit of paper towel got planted with it. If that is too much trouble, you can try using coffee filters instead of paper towels. They definitely will break down in a few weeks. Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves, harden them off and plant them into beds or outdoor containers. Once the little plants are ready to transplant, take containers outdoors and let them acclimate for a week to outdoor conditions before moving them. Water new plants regularly. Ideally, mint needs 1 to 2 inches (2.5-5 cm.) of water per week during the growing season. Use drip irrigation or water in the morning to allow leaves to dry. Overly wet leaves may lead to fungal diseases. Apply fertilizer in early spring. A balanced plant food with a 16-16-16 ratio is ideal. Do not over-fertilize, as it can diminish oil production and lead to disease issues. Mint can be aggressive so it may be best to plant it in containers or in an out of the way area of the garden. Alternatively, you can let it ramble around where human contact will release the oils and perfume the area with a heavenly scent. Transplant the mint seedlings when they reach 2 inches tall. Harvest leaves when the mint herb plant reaches 12 inches tall. Pick the larger outside leaves as the plant grows to encourage more leaf growth. Young leaves and stems have the best flavor. Dry mint leaves on trays or by hanging bunched branches upside down in a warm, dark, well-ventilated area. Fresh leaves are easy to freeze too.
