I Can't Go On Without You
Summary: Max calls up Mike at three am, without any questions asked, Mike goes to her.
Tags: Max Mayfield & Mike Wheeler, Minor Character Death
Its on Ao3 too
“Mike?”
“Max? It’s three in the morning?”
“I know – its… its my mom. Can you come to the hospital please?”
“I’ll be there.”
He doesn’t care to be silent, shoving his shoes on and grabbing a sweater. He doesn’t think of Holly still awake or the fact that his mom had for sure heard him slamming things around as he swipes his keys off the kitchen counter. His walkie is in one hand, the open channel silent as he starts up the car and peels out his driveway loudly, waking up the sleeping neighborhood.
He looked at the time, the numbers 3:12 flashing at him. He easily drives down the empty streets, definitely breaking a few speeding laws as he approaches Hawkins General. He sees Max sitting outside, smoke curling around her in wispy clouds. He gets out, barely remembering to lock his car as he jogs towards her. She looks horrible. Her face is splotchy, bright red against her pale skin and her freckles seemed almost non-existent. She drops the cigarette, putting it out under her shoe before stepping forward and crashing into Mike’s chest.
He instinctively wraps his arms around her, one hand around her waist and the other pressing her head to his neck. He doesn’t know what’s wrong, he doesn't know why she’s at the hospital at three in the morning, but he’s here, holding her tightly as if he could put back all her broken pieces back together. She smells of smoke and cheap rose perfume and her hair feels tangled, the strands being held up by a dingy hair tie. She’s still in her Ralph’s Records uniform: A black bowling shirt with the store name embroidered on the right side of the shirt and her blue ripped jeans.
She pulls away first, her breath still ragged and quick. Her face is still red, and her eyes are bloodshot as she leads him inside, walking past the nurses mulling around the nursing station. He catches their worried looks as Max tightens her grip on his hand, tugging him into the elevator. She stands across from him, arms crossed and her face dejected. Its different from that night in ’85, when they had been standing outside Billy’s hospital room waiting for the doctors to confirm if he was alive or not.
He wasn’t, the Mindflayer destroyed his chest cavity, taking his lungs, heart, and any organs that had gotten in the way.
That was the last time Mike had seen Neil Hargrove, tear marks streaking down his face and Max had muttered something about Neil only crying because he hoped it was him that ended his son, not some measly mall fire. Still, Mike only felt the surface level of empathy for the horrible man with a rotten son.
Almost three years later, Mike feels like he’s still stuck in that moment, the only difference was that the Party wasn’t here. The Byers were still in California, far away from Hawkins as they can get without leaving the country. Dustin wasn’t even in Hawkins either, he was in Utah, spending his winter break with Suzie and Lucas was in Chicago with his parents, looking at some of the schools that had scouted him for the various sports he played.
“My mom got hit.” Max finally says, “A drunk driver drove her into a tree. The driver died on the way to the hospital and my mom, they said she won’t make it.” He pulls her close, hands almost shaking as the elevator finally opens. She pulls away, her shoulders squaring, and she steps out into the flurry of doctors running the floor. She waits and Mike waits with her, waits for the inevitable news that Susan Mayfield died on a cold December night in 1987 because someone decided to drive drunk.
Mike goes in at six thirty to make a promise, hoping to ease Susan Mayfield’s mind.
For the first time in years, Mike prays to a god he’s not sure exist and prays for an easy passing.
Max goes in at six-forty-seven to say goodbye and at seven am on December 19th, 1987, Susan Mayfield succumbs to her injuries.
At seven am, on that snowing morning, Max Mayfield is the last of her family.
At seven am, on that cloudy, cold morning, Max Mayfield becomes an orphan at the age of seventeen.
They leave the hospital almost at midday, Max has to fill out paperwork and she wants to sleep forever once they’re done.
Mike takes them home, sits in the car for a complete thirty minutes with her, takeout slowly cooling at her feet before she sighs heavily and grabs the bags. She heads to his room, whispering a ‘good afternoon’ to Mrs. Wheeler before disappearing up the stairs. Mike realizes suddenly how exhausted he is as his mom meets him in the hall, a worried look on her face. Her hair is brown again, just how it had been before everything went to shit, before his best friend went missing and they were fighting interdimensional monsters every week for the next four years.
He seeks her comfort just like he did when they pulled Will’s fake body out of the water and when the Byers left Hawkins, taking two pieces of him with them.
( He doesn’t mention the day him and El broke up over the phone four months after she moved away and he cried into her lap at fifteen years old)
“Susan is dead.” He whispers, “Can she stay here?”
And Karen Wheeler is a mother, she raised three good, smart kids. She feed the three boys that never left Mike’s side. She let them have free reign of the basement and let them stay as long as their parents let them. With a gentle nod of her head and a kiss to the side of his head along with a whispered promise that she’s always welcomed, does she let him go.
Mike finds Max in one of his shirts. It’s the Hellfire one, he had gotten an extra, paying Eddie an additional twenty dollars he won in a bet with Nancy for it. It was big, hanging off one of her shoulders exposing her collarbone. She was eating her fries, eyes distant as Mike entered his room quietly, the door clicking shut behind him. She doesn’t look at him as he takes his own food and eats it in silence next to her.
When they’re done, Mike closes the curtains as Max gets comfortable on the bed, claiming the side by the wall. The room is engulfed in darkness as Mike crosses his room, blindly gathering their trash and going to throw it away. He comes back a few minutes later, a cup of water in hand. He places it on his bedstand as he slips under the covers with Max. She easily fits herself into his side, her cold hands (they’re always cold and it makes him want to hold her closer, to warm her hands up in between his own) fisting his shirt.
It’s easy, familiar in a way they can’t explain. They’re two parts of a song, completing each other in a way no one but maybe Steve and Robin can relate to. He slides an arm around her waist, pulling her close and tugging the blankets over them. Her chest rattles against his side and its easy to press his lips to the top of her head.
When they wake up, he’ll sit her in between his legs and wrangle her hair out of her knotted ponytail and make her hair pretty with simple plaits he begged Nancy to teach him.
When they wake up, he’ll hold her as she cries.
When they wake up, he’ll promise to never leave her, that wherever she goes, he’ll follow and she’ll give him a watery laugh and ask if he’s planning to replace Lucas, because after everything, the two are still together.
But for now, the two sleep, embraced in the warmth they share. Mike’s humming lulls her to sleep as his hand gently rubs circles over the shirt she had made fun of him for wearing.
For now, on this wretched winter day, Max sleeps knowing that when she wakes up, Mike Wheeler will be there, holding her together as her world continues to shift and change.

eddie thought nancy jumping into the water after steve was the most romantic thing he’d ever seen because he hasn’t seen the way this whole group constantly protects each other at all costs
like yes, nancy and steve have a vibe this season (a whole other story) but if that had been jonathan or any of the kids instead of steve, nancy would’ve jumped in the exact same way- and vice versa
the entire group- adults, teenagers, and kids all love each other so much & they do whatever it takes to save each other and be there for each other, like eddie buddy the only reason you found that so unique is cause you haven’t seen the whole group in action yet

What If Steve Were To Leave Hawkins? Part 11
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10
I'm glad so many people liked the happy part in Chicago! Now, back to the angst. Hope you guys like it, what do you think I should do for the next part?
~*~*~*~
When all of the younger teens of the Party reached the Wheeler’s basement, the space exploded into vengeful bickering. Each of the kids, bar El and Will who were watching the display with gazes of concerned worry, had their own opinion and placed the blame of Eddie and Steve leaving on someone else. Lucas and Max placed the blame on Mike and Dustin, the two that decided Steve needed space in the first place. Mike placed full accountability on Steve, as per usual, for leaving and causing such a fuss. Taking Eddie was just a bonus that exposed Steve further to Mike’s contempt. Meanwhile, Dustin blamed Eddie for driving Steve away and himself for not doing more to keep them both in town.
He had never felt more panicked and guilt-ridden than he did at this very moment, a feat in itself because he’d been through a lot of shit. But he had now caused both of his older male friends to flee Hawkins and he couldn’t really imagine anything worse. What, was Robin going to leave next? Perhaps Nancy or Jonathon? He thought that this summer would be the best ever. The Upside Down was gone for good, the town had begrudgingly accepted Eddie’s innocence, and the Byerses were back from California. However, this summer sucked and he felt naive for thinking something in his life could go right for once.
“Shut up, Max! You don’t even know what you’re talking about. You didn’t notice Steve’s car outside your trailer all night, how can we trust you to tell us if Eddie was coerced to get in or not?” Dustin tuned back into the conversation around him when Mike brazenly questioned Max’s credibility.
Lucas quickly jumped to her defense and pointed a finger in Mike’s face, “Don’t talk to her like that! Why wouldn’t we trust her? She’s the one that saw them in the first place. And Eddie knows Steve, he wouldn’t have to be coerced into his car. They’re friends!”
“Don’t talk for me, Lucas! I can speak for myself,” Max said before turning to Mike. “Listen mouthbreather, I know you have a weird crush slash stalker obsession with him but Eddie chose to leave with Steve. Probably because Toothless over there hurt his feelings by telling him everything he’s ever been afraid of. Nice going, now we lost another friend.”
Will jumped in then with a hand on Mike’s shoulder when he saw the fury ignite in his eyes. “Ok but why are we all freaking out? I thought we were worried about whether Steve was alright or not. We know that he’s fine and Eddie’s with him. Can’t we just wait for them to come back?”
All he received were matching looks of disappointment before Dustin turned to Eleven. “El! Can you go look for them in the void to make sure they’re okay?”
She looked at Will for confirmation and raised an eyebrow, did they actually want her to look for Steve and Eddie? He sighed and nodded in resignation. It seemed that the others were going to keep hunting them down regardless of what they did. They might as well use El’s powers to take a look for safety purposes. She turned back to Dustin and nodded resolutely, “Yes, I can find them.”
Max and Lucas quickly turned the downstairs radio onto static while Mike hunted down an old blindfold. Dustin gently pushed her onto the couch and urged her to rush the process. After a moment of static and mind numbing darkness, El entered the void. She imagined Steve with his mother hen personality and sunflower yellow sweatshirt with Eddie in his black outfits and bitchin’ hair. A picture started to grow in front of her.
She saw Steve and Eddie in a restaurant, a sports bar or pub it seemed. There was a long bar running along the left side of the building that faced a brick wall lined with booth seating and high top tables.
“I see them.”
Mike squeezed her hand, “Are they hurt? Is Eddie okay?”
The man in question was scarfing down a Reuben with extra sauerkraut. His jaw practically unhinged as he shoved the huge sandwich, dripping with thousand island dressing and sauerkraut, into his mouth. Steve was watching him in disgusted fondness, pushing him away when he tried to lean closer into Steve’s personal space in an effort to escape the smell of vinegar on Eddie’s breath.
“He is eating a large sandwich.”
Max asked, “Is Steve okay?”
Steve placed his right hand on Eddie’s thigh out of view of the other patrons at the bar. He said something that made Eddie laugh so loudly, a few heads turned to look at the pair. When one woman’s eyes lingered longer than Eddie appreciated, he hissed at her and bared his teeth. The display was less intimidating than he expected due to the pieces of sauerkraut stuck between his teeth but it only made Steve look at him more fondly.
“They are both happy. Eddie is laughing and Steve is looking at him like Dad looks at Joyce.” Unbeknownst to her, the kids glanced at each other in bewilderment. They would focus on that comparison later.
Moving on, Dustin asked her, “do you see any identifying information? Street signs, landmarks, anything?”
El did in fact see several things. She saw a Blackhawks jersey pinned above Eddie’s head, a team she recognized from watching Hockey with Hopper. And if that didn’t clue her into their location, she also noticed the Chicago flag situated on the wall behind the bar. However, she couldn’t bring herself to tell the others what she had found. Not when she noticed the way Steve was looking at Eddie, like he had finally discovered what happiness was.
“I will not say. They are happy, they do not need us to find them.”
Dustin almost screamed in indignance, “El! They need us and we need them back home! Tell us where they are!”
El took one last glance at the happy couple, Steve’s eyes were full of love while Eddie licked thousand island dressing off of his fingers and stole french fries off of Steve’s plate. They looked happier than she had ever seen them in Hawkins and she knew she could not disturb that. She removed the blindfold with blood dripping from her nose and a soft smile on her face. “They are home, we can not ruin that.”
Dustin shook his head and jumped up from his spot on the armchair, “I can’t believe you’d be so unhelpful! But fine, I’ll find them without your help.”
He didn’t wait to hear El’s response or the defenses of the other kids made on her behalf. He made his way outside of Mike’s house and turned his bike to the trailer park. Without much of a plan and no idea which words he wanted to say, he knocked on the door of the Munson’s trailer. Dustin wasn’t sure what he was expecting but an annoyed Wayne probably came close.
“What can I help ya with, kid?” The older man breathed out with irritation coating each syllable.
“Hi Mr. Munson, I was wondering if you’d heard from Eddie? Max said she saw him leave this morning and I’m worried about him. Is he missing too?”
Wayne just released a bone weary sigh and ran a hand over his face as if Dustin’s questions themselves were aging him. “Look, Eddie went off for a while with that boy Steve. Y’all don’t need to worry about ‘im, there’s no one I would trust more with my boy. Alright? I think they both just need some distance from all of this. You kids, the town. They just want to be left alone for now.”
Dustin’s eyes started to prick as tears began to build. “But please, Mr. Munson-”
“Just go home, kid. They’ll be back when they’re ready. You need a ride back?”
Dustin just shook his head and clambered back onto his bike. He heard Wayne close the door close behind him and let out an angered sound of frustration. He started pedaling as hard as he could with tears now streaming readily down his face. Dustin didn’t know what else he could do. Hopper couldn't find them using police resources, El refused to tell them what she saw, Steve hadn’t called him back since he had missed his first call, and now Wayne was gatekeeping information about their whereabouts.
The unfairness of it all pushed Dustin to pedal harder. The tears in his eyes clouded his vision but he just pedaled faster. Until his front tire hit a rock and threw him over the handlebars. His palms skid along the harsh cement and his shin split open upon contact with the dingy pedal of his bike. For a moment, Dustin just sat on the ground and sobbed. Usually in this situation, he would go to Steve who would patch him up and feed him dinner, typically in the form of a cheese pizza and Coke. Or Eddie would pick him up on his way home from Family Video visiting Robin and Steve. But, he drove them all away and now all he’s left with is his miserable self and torn skin.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19 Part 20: Epilogue

In honor of barbenheimer day, here’s what the party would do for each movie
Max, El, Will: went to see Barbie together, and dressed in full pink.
Mike, Lucas: went to see Oppenheimer together. Lucas later regretted not seeing Barbie, too.
Dustin, Erica: Oppenheimer, then Barbie. They went home for lunch and to change in between. (I hc Erica’s bday as July 21, so she’s gotta live it up.)
Steve, Robin: went to Barbie with Max, El, and Will.
Eddie, Nancy: Barbie, then Oppenheimer. Eddie went as Barbie and Nancy went as Oppenheimer.
Johnathan, Argyle: Someone had a showing of Oppenheimer with Barbie subtitles, so there had to be a Barbie with Oppenheimer subtitles. That’s the showing Johnathan and Argyle went to. They didn’t question it (they were too high obvs).

So Robin is off to college and the kids are back at school and growing so.. they don’t need their babysitter as much.. So Steve gets little lonely at times. Sure there’s Eddie who hangs out with him occasionally but he seems to have like million other friends too and he is always a busy guy, especially now since his healed and cleared and the town is starting to forget. So Steve tries not to reach out too much because he doesn’t think he is welcome (he is). And it’s been little weird between them lately anyway, like it’s nice and he genuinely enjoys spending time with Eddie but sometimes there’s this tension and he doesn’t know what it is or what to do with it (it’s called a crush Steve, don’t worry you’ll get there). So he is alone a lot and gets lonely.
And one day he just announces that he is gonna get himself a dog. He thought about a lot, did research how to take care of one and all. Just like he did as a kid but his parents never got him the wished puppy.
Everyone is just like okay Steve, go get a dog. And they all think he is gonna get one of the bigger dogs. You know like an active dog he could go to long walks and/or runs with. It would be fitting, Steve likes sports. And in all honesty, that’s what Steve probably thought too.
The day comes when Steve is getting the dog. He needs to drive to a bigger city tho and he goes alone. He is leaving in the morning and driving back for afternoon anyway, on a school day so. Yeah anyway. The kids obviously want to see the dog right away so after school they go to Steve’s place, Eddie is driving them. They let themselves in and what greets them inside is a very tiny and very excited Pomeranian with a cutest pink little collar. It’s a little shocking but the girls are definitely first to recover, squealing with joy of how cute the dog is. Steve appears and just smiles, tells them “her name is Betty” and refuses to give any more explanations. The kids fold easy tho, Betty wins their hearts over in a (heh) heartbeat. Eddie gives the dog few pats and scratches but claims that, although she is very adorable, he is not that big of a dog person himself.
But. Next time the kids come over to Steve’s for a movie night Eddie is already there, lying on a couch, Betty lying on his chest while he gives butterfly kisses to her. And he has the audacity to ask “what?” when the kids give him a look™️
Bonus: Steve’s parents suddenly announce they’re coming home. Steve hasn’t told them he got a dog and is panicking because shit he didn’t think this one through. Eddie is right there offering to have Betty over for while his parents are in town. A little too eager for a guy who doesn’t really care for dogs that much too 🤨
Tltr: Steve gets a dog. Eddie is a dad who doesn’t want a dog but ends up loving it more than anything ever. Gets her a badass new spiked collar too.

You know what I would think is the best/ saddest ending for Stranger Things? That this is all just a DnD campaign!
But like the last episode those last five to ten minutes of the series you see the boys, as grown adults (whatever age their actors are) walking out of Hawkins library or wherever they have they’re meet ups.
And you just get a glimpse of their lives Lucas a NBA player, Will a renowned artist, Mike the DM is a Novelist (like Stephen King popularlarity) similar a Dustin an inventor Nobel prize winner.
And as they walk through Hawkins their home time you get to see a glimpse of everyone. That they used as NPCs for their sessions.
And I mean EVERYONE (all actors willing or time to come back) even the dead ones Barbra, Eddie Robert, etc
Steve was their actual babysitter and is dating Eddie, which they only found out about recently so they might have revenge killed him for keeping the secret.
Robin was a babysitter in theory (friends with Steve and joined in on their shenanigans) and she’s dating Vickie (or Chrissy or both!!)
They were supposed to be one offs but how could they kill their mom and uncle?
Nancy Johnathan and Erica also play because as adults this is one of the few times they can actually spend time with their siblings. Somehow Johnathan manage to rope in Argyle as an NPC with his amazing big brother powers.
Max is already with her wife El at hoppers and the two conspire how they are getting Mike or Will to finally propose! They are reached their wits end at their ridiculous year long fumbling.
Max giving her husband Lucas a kiss as he bets them fifty it’s gonna be will. (Lucas, max and El are in a poly V with Max in the middle!)
And you just see them all gathered together for Dinner.
With Eggo waffles as dessert!

If I ever come across as a Nancy anti I promise I’m not, she’s one of my favorite of the older teens and I love her, but when I’m talking about characters like Mike and Jonathan, some of their main conflicts are the result of her stubbornness/inability to recognize when she’s wrong
#stranger things#nancy wheeler#mike wheeler#Jonathan byers#like. the wheeler family dynamics are forever and I think will always be fucked up#and jancy-as it is being shown right now- is not a good endgame for either character#this also isn’t saying Jonathan and mike have done no wrong bc….#looks around#but I am saying that because I love Nancy so much I can appreciate her character flaws and what she is supposed to represent#for each character she is mainly linked with#that being mike Jonathan Steve Robin and Max (as of runaway max/s4)#funny thing about her conflicts they all revolve around sexism and misogyny but through a really White Rich Woman viewpoint#and bc she’s dealt with so much misogyny she often jumps to call others out on it even when there are different contributors#(the s3 madwheeler fight over El)#not to say mike wasn’t sexist that season bc he was#but that fight was not about el being his gf bc Lucas was also worried abt her safety and Dustin would have been too if he were there#they were the only two that saw what happened last time El pushed herself and it caused mike to ‘go crazy’ lowk#but back to nance- it’s because I love her and understand that she’s more than just ‘gun girl’ or ‘stancy love triangle victim’#that I can criticize her#because most of the reasons people don’t like her are plain misogyny!! and they don’t realize her character motivations and why she’s#Like That#Sib relationship is diff. but the ‘being a bitch to Robin/leading on Steve thing’ people are saying#just do not Get Her character and how often she (like her brother) confuses romantic and platonic feelings#bc the Robin thing was more her being wary to make a new friend (her last 2 DIED) but she projected it as jealousy over Steve bc that means#she doesn’t have to address the Barb/Fred trauma !!#and she wasn’t leading on Steve by making eye contact with him- she was ‘caught up in the moment’ bc she associates Steve with#‘guy you date to forget about dead bsf’#which isn’t Steve’s fault BUT#the stancy break up was#he literally told her to forget about her best friend dying to be ‘normal teenagers’

Thinking about how the main characters actually end up attracting/getting the attention of outcasts. A lot of people talk about how Eddie finds outcasts and takes them under his wings. But no one actually talks about how the main characters are like fucking magnets for people like them. In the first season they all gravitate towards one another despite how they view each other. The boys find El and even though they were wary of her and sometimes treated her bad but she ended up liking them anyway. Thinking about how Steve who wasn’t really an outcast but was still drawn towards Nancy and ended up getting involved. And how Steve also ending up becoming friends with Dustin and the party. Thinking about how Max who was treated like garbage in her words but who still wanted to be part of the Party. How her first interaction with the boys was them spying on her and how she left that note. And yet she still wanted to be a part of their group. Thinking about how Bob gravitated towards Joyce and ended up bonding the most with Will. And how he also got a somewhat bond with Jonathan. How he was also able to make bonds with Hopper, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. Thinking about how Murray keeps coming back time after time. Because he finally has friends and he admires these people so much. Thinking about how Robin who hated Steve when she was in high school. But eventually ended up really liking him and being surprised. Who formed a deep platonic love with Steve. Thinking about how Erica who is Lucas’ sister but didn’t bond with her brothers’ friends before season 3. Thinking about her finally forming bonds with people she calls ‘nerds’ constantly. Thinking about how she knows that they would die and kill for her. Thinking about how she said that her and Dustin bled together. Thinking about how Argyle is always there for Jonathan and the Byers. Thinking about how he’s willing to go through hell for them and drive them around. Thinking about how he’s going out of his way to make them comfortable. Thinking about Eddie and how he really only found them because Dustin was wearing a shirt that he found to be a brave choice. Thinking about how Eddie probs would not have made friends with them if he didn’t notice them. Thinking about how Eddie became more comfortable and trusting between the whole gang. Thinking about how Eddie realizes that he has a certain way he looks at life and the gang is able to challenge that. Thinking about how Eddie accepts this challenge. Thinking about how the original Party met because of seeing other people be lonely and just want to offer their friendship. Thinking about how the boys didn’t all meet at once and instead it took a few years for the Party to actually form. Thinking about how despite their brothers being friends, Nancy and Jonathan only had true conversations in season 1. Thinking about how Hopper and Joyce had a friendship/thing going on before but they took some time apart and finally got back to being friends. And being more than friends. Thinking about how all of these characters come together. Thinking about how each person must have a trustworthy and comforting aurora around them. Thinking about how the outcasts will always stay together and find one another. No matter what the situation is.

ajksld im a dumbass with nothing better to do so here’s my st4 music headcannons
steve only listens to like Kenny Loggins and shit so when robin introduces him to the gay music steve’s like “wtf is this.” and robin’s like “gay ppl music :)” and he’s like “but i’m not gay” and robin just maniacally laughs
dustin strictly listening to movie soundtracks and lucas constantly being like “bro broaden your horizons”
dustin just shoots back with “all u listen to is Kate Bush and The Temptations shut up” and lucas is like “i also like Earth Wind and Fire :(“ and dustin just goes “ur further proving my point”
mike likes more chill stuff like U2 and The Cars and honestly will introduced him to most of it so they have pretty similar music taste
i can imagine will falling asleep to The Police, Queen, Simple Minds, etc. (especially (Don’t You) Forget About Me by Simple Minds because he feels like he’s being distanced from everyone and moving to cali didn’t exactly help…)
ok but hear me out: el getting introduced to music and loving like synth pop/electro stuff bus it makes her little brainwaves tingle or wtv
like the first time will was like “here listen to this, these guys are called Depeche Mode, i think you’ll like them :)” she like freaked out bcs music? in her ears? more likely than you think
max obviously only listens to girl bossing music (Kate bush, Madonna, Blondie, etc.) and looks good doing it (lucas heart eyes always)
jonathan was introduced to like reggae n soul kinda stuff by argyle, who likes Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, etc.
robin not only likes gay ppl music, but also Duran Duran, The Cure, R.E.M., and much more !!! she LOVES Orange Crush by R.E.M. and Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure, probably the songs that would get her out of Vecna world if need be
i think nancy would have similar taste to max, but more cher and madonna than anything,
eddie canonically likes Ozzy and Black Sabbath, but i think he’d also really like Megadeth, KISS, Metallica (obv), and possibly RHCP…
edit: i realized that Orange Crush wasn’t made in/before 1986 so i decided that robin’s favorite R.E.M. song would be Life And How To Live It :)

Continuing with the thought Robin and Will find themselves locked in their minds like if they were vecna'd. So while the Mind Flayer is using their bodies Will and Robin are fighting for their lives im their minds. The 2 year time skip still happens seeing as Robin and Will fall under the Mind Flayer's control 3ish months after vol 2. Also for plot Eddie is dead sadly and Max is still in a coma. Robin finds Max in the weird mind scape, Max is against the wall like Robin was in the Creel home. Will, Max and Robin are now all trying to figure out how to break out and help their friends. (Robin and Will are still very much conciseness and know what's going on but can't stop themselves it's like knowing what your doing but not being able to stop it)
While that's happening the gang freaks out because two of their party are being controlled by a shadow spider. Nancy and Mike are panicking the most (it's not because their love interests are evil, nope) and everyone just feels like they keep on failing. It's awkward fighting the people you care about so while the gang uses non lethal weapons Robin and Will are full blown trying to kill their friends. Some of the gang do get hurt by Robin and Will, it's never life threatening but there's definitely scars. Fire weapons are used to keep the two away. (Doesn't stop Robin from grabbing Nancy's wrist that's holding a torch and pinning it to a wall but 👀)
After like a year and half since Robin and Will got controlled the two of them escape the mind prison with Max but after such a long time both of them are corrupt or in other words the Mind Flayer doesn't need to be the one in control because a piece is left behind to keep them under it's control. This is we're the flirting happens, this is where Nancy gets knocked to the ground while fighting Robin in the snow, the two of them panting hard and as Nancy gets to her knees Robin crouched down lifting Nancy's chin with the tip of her sword drawing a little blood from her digging the sword a little to hard with a sadistic glint in her eye and then she's leaving calling out behind her "till next time princess" leaving a very sexually confused Nancy. Will does something similar to Mike but their more yelling and fighting back from Mike. It becomes more Robin and Will annoying and sexually confused the Wheelers while the Mind Flayer and Vecna work on a secret plan than the Mind Flayer actually using Robin and Will for the more dangerous tasks like it did before. Max also wakes up from her coma the same time Robin and Will are just corrupt and not being fully mind controlled and tells everything to the party but she is disabled (she's blind and has to go through a lot of physical therapy but she will regain most of her movement). At one point Robin and Will do get sedated and taken by the party and interrogated like Will was in season 2 but it's gayer. The Mind Flayer's plan is mostly completed by the time the party does manage to burn it out of Robin and Will (they need to double the amount of heat for both of them since it's been so long) and everyone hates every single moment they have Robin and Will burning because they sound like themselves (Max gets some ptsd from their screams because Billy sounded the same way) we get some tender moments between the Wheeler kids and their previously corrupt love interests (homoerotic bandaging your homme from their old wounds because there's no health care in the Upside Down and doing the tracing the scars lightly and asking how they got it). Happy ending in the end because I'm a sucker for them and a spin off series of the party (mainly ronance) dealing with the aftermath of everything.
