But my god, sometimes it’s jarring to realize what a unique upbringing I had and how that affected my worldview.

The people in an uproar about this are out here like “Who’s she even talking to, the blind?” And “How do blind people even know what ‘a blue suit’ looks like?” And “If there’s deaf people there how come she’s wearing a mask? They can’t read her lips!”

And it’s just like, yes, she is talking to an audience that includes blind people. Not everyone was blind from birth, and some do have some vision—enough to, say, discern the shape of someone in a blue suit from another person sitting in the next chair. And they’ve never even heard of sign language interpreters, something I took for granted as a fact of life since I was about eight.

And then I remember that it’s because they are deeply incurious. They are absolutely unconcerned. They have a certain picture in their head of what blindness is and what deafness is and what accommodations they may want. Why should they care to learn about things like descriptive audio for films, or a TTY relay, or alt text for images? Do you think they’ve ever even wondered why the fire alarms in the mall have a small strobe light under them? They have no use for them, so what does it matter?

And that’s for disabilities that they at least have to have heard of.

#star life #there was something I saw a while back where a teacher was talking to his elementary school students and asking them #what problems they thought people with disabilities might have in day to day life #and some were on the mark while most were more the sort of thing you’d expect a child to be concerned about #even kind of whimsical as kids sometimes get #and then he asked them what kind of problems someone using a wheelchair might encounter in an average day #and their answers were extremely concrete and specific #because #their teacher used a wheelchair #and they had probably seen what sort of things he had run into before #or heard him talk about them #or even just thought about it more because he was present in their daily lives #and i just #think about that a lot #there was lots about my upbringing that I would change if I could #but that’s not one #adaptive skiing with paraplegic people #horse cart rides with people with motor impairment that would make horseback riding impossible #the blind woman who was doing a bike race #my mom’s boss Nina who used a wheelchair #and on a completely different note the elder queers of the area at queer family outings #I had a very expansive concept of ways of being #and that I AM grateful for #also I don’t really like being out into this position where I seem to be defending a self-described ‘top cop’ #but YALL. CMON.
