Frederick Douglass, a former slave, an abolitionist and author, wrote in his autobiography that he sought spiritual assistance from an enslaved conjurer named Sandy Jenkins. Sandy told Douglass to follow him into the woods where they found a root that Sandy told Douglass to carry in his right pocket to prevent any European man from whipping him. Douglass carried the root on his right side instructed by Sandy and hoped the root would work when he returned to the plantation. The cruel slave-breaker Mr. Covey told Douglass to do some work, but as Mr. Covey approached Douglass, Douglass had the strength and courage to resist Mr. Covey and defeated him after they fought.

Covey never bothered Douglass again. In his autobiography, Douglass believed the root given to him by Sandy prevented him from being whipped by Mr. Covey. Conjure for African Americans is a form of resistance against white supremacy. African American conjurers were seen as a threat by European Americans because slaves went to free and enslaved conjurers to receive charms for protection and revenge against their slaveholders. Enslaved African people used Hoodoo to bring about justice on American plantations by poisoning slaveholders and conjuring death onto their oppressors.

I remember reading pre-release S2 reviews of OFMD and whoever said that the crew wasn't given any focus at all compared to S1 must be highly delusional. All the characters are given their own spotlight in just a few episodes (I need more Wee John tbh but I feel we'll be getting that in the next episodes). And I love the show more because of it.

The show has always been about having a found family. And I love that Season 2 is really giving us that --- I think even more than Season 1. I absolutely adore seeing the crew's interactions: how they talk to each other, comfort one another, laugh together, panic over a curse together, and be absolutely wild.

And now with Izzy becoming officially part of the crew -- part of their family, gosh, it moves me to tears. It really hammers down why Izzy said what he said in the trailer: how piracy is about belonging to something. He's finally found a home where he truly feels he's accepted in; be who he is without having to follow orders or repress the feelings he's kept deep inside. Finally, he's found a place --- a family to belong to.

Everything about Sarina Bhonsle gleaned from her little amount of screen time. Because I love her and I'm feeding my soul with scraps.

She is a Beetles fan. She is a fan of 17th century poet Thomas Dekker. His writing inspired her to become a writer.

She's a reporter and an accomplished journalist. And she's not a conspiracy theorist.

Sarina is intelligent, observant, and has good detective skills. She did uncover the secret of the Library. "...people using that magic for their own personal gains..." She also has a strong sense of justice.

She also learned about a secret government organization and is possibly a hacker.

Sarina is animated and expressive. She rambles when she's excited. It's so cute and it reminds me a little bit of Cassandra.

Sarina's style is giving western chic.

She pulled her articles about the Library, proving she could be trusted with the secret.
