#My art style is really heavily influenced by this manga

I heard Bakemono Yawazukushi finished it's English publication, so I highly recommend people go and read it! It's my favorite manga! The art is very nice to look at and the story is very deep (warning: there's body horror).

It's the----- updated Madoka iceberg yaaay!
I'll only be discussing the additions on this one (in green) so please check out the old one for the original descriptions
Content warning fooooor: fetishes, child abuse, artists being perverted about children, suicide, death and organ trafficking. This is gonna be fun, huh
Let's goooo!
Sky:
Mami forever alone: A bit of a joke/observation in the fandom. The popular pairings are Madoka and Homura, and Sayaka and Kyoko, often leading to Mami being alone which sadly suits her character... This is jokingly noticed in fanart and manga with Mami often being left out. Sadly it's also led to some darker pairings for her such as Kyubey, Nagisa and even the witch kissed woman from episode 2.
Witches speak: Although witches are often silent or cry out like monsters. Two are known to have spoken. Elly speaks in reverse in episode 4 saying 'I really had fun today, I want to do it again. Next time, I'll bring a bentou'. Izabel also speaks in episode 10 to lure Homura into her labyrinth. However it is completely unconfirmed that the witches are actually speaking and it may even be their familiars. Mildly related, Oktavia's scream from episode 9 is actually a distorted scream from Sayaka.
Walpurgisnacht festival: Walpurgisnacht's name comes from the real world European festival of the same name, or Walpurgis night, that lands on the 30th of April or the 1st of May. Some people theorise that Walpurgisnacht actually arrives in Mitakihara on one of these days.
Walpurgisnacht rising: The sequel film to Rebellion announced on April 25th, 2021... very little was first shown and not a sausage has been revealed since... v-v
Madoka Magica Cafe: A temporary cafe set up around the release of the original anime in 2011. It offered special drinks and desserts as well as Madoka merch. It was extremely popular with waits of over 2 hours on opening day. A few more were held in Japan and Taipei.
Tip:
Magia Record Anime ver. Units: Very controversial variant units from the Magia Record game. These units were criticised as lazy copies of existing characters. With either very minor differences to talk sprites or none at all, ugly battle sprites and lazy transformation animations ripped straight from the anime. These units were not received well with one of the only good aspects being the beautiful card art.
Juubey: The Kyubey for the Pleides Saints in Kazumi Magica. Spoilers for the manga. He was an altered Kyubey that served the girls and purified their Soul Gems without need for Grief Seeds. After learning the truth about witches, the girls killed Kyubey and turned them into a Dependent-Version Incubator with the nickname Juubey and blocked out Kyubey's influence on the city. Yeah, it's complicated XD
Covid delivery girls: The dual unit Tsuruno Felicia Delivery Girls features face masks in their transformation and Magia sprite because the Covid pandemic was occuring when the unit was released.
Ebony: Ebony was the third Puella Historia unit released in Magia Record being a girl from ancient Egypt. She is heavily criticised in the western fandom for not only having a terribly revealing and historically inaccurate outfit but for also being white. However, like Cleopatra, she could be Greek therefore her skin tone would be correct. This however does not excuse her poor design overall On a similar note, how Cleopatra appears in Magia Record is incorrect as she is tanned in-game but has been confirmed by historians to have been white.
Cancelled figures: What is says on the tin! Merchandise that was cancelled including a scale figure of Nagisa and figures of Yachiyo and Tsuruno in their casual clothes and uniform respectively (possibly prize figures). Some that are in a terrible limbo include the 1/8 scale Holy Mami figure, Figuarts mini of Mami, Sayaka and Kyoko and a 1/7 scale figure of Madoka in the style of Aoki Ume's art.
Rebellion was just fanservice: My, my, a controversial one! Some people speculate that the sequel movie, Rebellion, was merely made for fanservice and money. This can be argued with the finite feeling to the anime's ending as well as the many tropes seen in the movie. It shows all the girls fighting happily together (a thing wanted by many fans), ties up loose ends with Sayaka and Kyoko and adds a fan favourite witch, Charlotte, into the main cast. I like to think this isn't the case but you can decide this yourself.
Masara Kokoro Bride ver. A recent variant for Masara and Kokoro where Masara is in a wedding dress and Kokoro is in a tuxedo. Their description is that they're modelling for wedding photos but the gay theming is too overpowering for it to be simply platonic. The less than subtle hints at romance between two girls is a change for the series that loves to be ambiguous. The unit was very well received.
Kyubey and Charlotte scooters: A unique piece of merchandise are scooters by Brain Police that feature decals of Kyubey and Charlotte. You can get yourself one for the low low price of 134,400 yen (£750). These are certainly unique, but quite a funny piece of merch
Lesbian Rika: Rika from Magia Record is the only magical girl canonically who has been in love with another girl (don't get the pitchforks, SPECIFICALLY confirmed). Her wish was for her childhood friend to fall in love with her instead of the boy she liked which does work yet Rika realises it doesn't feel right and breaks up with her.
Shallows:
Trans Ria: Ria is a magical girl from Magia Record, her wish was 'Turn me into a naturally beautiful girl'. This has led fans to believe that her wish was for her to transition from male to female. This can also be seen with her doppel Heide Jekyll that transforms from a dumpy blob in a rectangle to a feminine figure with a circle. Her witch's name also comes from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde which is not only a male character but they were also known for transforming into an alter ego or a different person.
Devil Homura in Magia Record: A total tease. Fans have been wanting Devil Homura as a unit in Magia Record since its very beginning however she still hasn't come. To add salt to the wound, the Magia Report version of her, Devil Homura-chan was added on April Fools 2022. It's speculated she may be released on Magia Day but she's still not here...
Alina Eve's name: Alina Eve is a witch fusion of Alina, her doppel and Shitori Egumo who debuted in episode 25 of the Magia Record anime. In the anime, her name appeared in Runes as 'Neo Dorothy Motherfucker'. This links to her use of curses and her doppel's name, Old Dorothy. However, when her profile was revealed on the official twitter she was named Alina Eve and in-game she is called Neo Dorothy. The reason for the change and discrepancy is unknown but it may be because they didn't want to use swear words in media outside the anime.
Swimsuit Madoka's transformation: An infamous one. When Madoka got her swimsuit unit her transformation was the first (and only so far) to use the live2D models instead of traditional animation. This was not well received and was a disappointment for one of the main character's units. The reason may have been time constraints but fans were not pleased.
Mami is Walpurgisnacht: Forgive me, it's a little clickbait-y..! The reason is..! Mami's voice actress, Kaori Mizuhashi also voiced Walpurgisnacht in the anime. She also voiced Tatsuya, Madoka's little brother.
Fetishes: Oh dear... we're getting here... Two magical girls have clear fetishes. Yukika gets pleasure from dangerous situations while Miyuri has a foot fetish that is probably played off for laughs... It is NOT okay to give child characters fetishes, okay? Fetishes are a sexual thing. Next.
Dub bloopers: Bloopers for the English dub of the anime were released at Otakon 2012 (can be found on Youtube). It certainly feels like 2010s humour but it's still a little funny. Also great if you wanna hear some of the girls swear.
Iroha x Yachiyo: Ugh. It is very clear from Magia Record media that Iroha and Yachiyo are played off very similarly to Madoka and Homura. While the pairing of Madoka and Homura is perfectly fine as they're both children, Iroha and Yachiyo are not. Yachiyo is an adult and Iroha is a child. The anime, merchandise, and the unit of them together rub salt into this wound as dual units are mostly seen as ship units by fans. It's disgusting and not okay.
Yuma's abuse: Yuma is an abuse victim in Oriko Magica. (cw description of child abuse) Her father is absent (either neglectful or has left) and her mother, Mako, would beat and burn her with cigarettes as well as kick her out of the house for long periods of time. Her parents are killed in the original manga and she is taken in by Kyoko because of her similarity to her late sister Momo. In Extra Story she never contracts and is living happily with her grandparents.
Deep Waters:
Gan: Ugh again. Gan is the artist behind Suzune Magica (probably the least liked spin off lol) who is infamous for their clear lack of restraint in making children sexualised. Arisa has an outfit with circles right where her nipples are, Chisato has an outfit with a strip of fabric for a skirt and she is canonically uncomfortable with it and they love giving older characters enormous (and unrealistic) breasts. The art they draw of their UNDERAGE characters is always sexual and borderline pornographic and. Not. Okay. (even told by Magireco staff to tone down their puella historia character, haha fuck you)
Takashi Tensugi The illustrator for Kazumi Magica. Their disgusting taste is evident in the character design for the protagonists as well as sexual and revealing shots in the manga but I've also heard that they've drawn hentai before. No I'm not going to fucking look for that thank you. But... another bad egg in the spin off manga series... Not okay
Masugitsune ANOTHER BAD EGG! One of the illustrators for Tart Magica and also the illustrator for Yukika (you can tell where this is going). Sexualises minors, just like every madoka spin-off artist seems to... Has drawn Yukika in revealing swimsuits and bunny costumes as well as the rest of the Tart cast. Remember, they're all children----! NOT OKAY!
Riz's former companions names Omg thank god we're past the nonce section... Riz had unnamed magical girl companions in Tart Magica that have been slowly named by their artist. Their names are... pretty shit honestly as they're just named after their weapons. They are Machete, Frusta and Falce with one being still unnamed.
Kuroe was a marketing stunt: Not confirmed of course but... Kuroe was introduced at the very beginning of the Magia Record anime with her being the only new character. She disappeared for the rest of the series until the very end with a very lacklustre and ineffective ending. One could imagine that her inclusion and focus was to grip watchers into continuing with an otherwise pretty underwhelming series. But... take it how you wish...
Livia's backstory: Hey, this isn't new! I hear you say! Well, it's not new, but it's changed! The original iceberg said that her backstory may have been linked to a miscarriage but NOPE its worse! She was actually almost a victim of organ trafficking when she was a child. And later in life, she watched one of her friends die on her wedding day as she was run over by a tractor that she caused to malfunction...
Himena and Hiko: Himena's wish was for her boyfriend to be with her within her. After... her boyfriend committed suicide yaaayyy! (sarcasm) The end of this iceberg isn't very nice, is it? Her boyfriend didn't want to come back and now he's stuck with her forever.
Well... that's it! Sorry it became a bit of a bummer at the end...

story inspiration tag | bloodbound: side stories
tagged by @lazysunjade
rules: write up a blurb or make a visual collage of the people or characters (from books, TV shows, movies, etc.) that inspired your story and/or OC, either visually, personality wise, or just a general vibe
The biggest inspiration for the overall aesthetic of this story was from the manga, Vagabond. I loved the way fight scenes were drawn and I really wanted to emulate the same style that the characters had in the manga. Just look at my oc Ryu, visually he shares a strong resemblance to the manga character Musashi Miyamoto. The most important thing for me with Bloodbound was that I wanted every post and detail to feel cohesive and connected. I wanted my characters to be believable and, more importantly, look the part.
My oc, Akuma actually wasn’t inspired by Vagabond but more so by Heaven Official’s Blessing and Untamed . I should have added that to the collage but too late. I wanted him to have a more feminine appearance, (beside his counterpart, Ryu who is supposed to represent the more ‘traditional’ rugged, masculine look) and was influenced by the art style of manhwas. The dynamic between Ryu and Akuma was also heavily inspired by the relationship in Untamed.
As for the soundtrack of Bloodbound, think visual kei and heavy metal (the GazettE, lynch, Girugamesh). Standout songs would be Taion from the GazettE and from the end by lynch.

I couldn't remember what your profile was called and randomly found you again digging through low poly stuff and am so so happy I did, your art is really rad and your models look so good! You have great taste in the best character tropes and Cool Shit, and manage to blend them into some wholly unique and sick as hell designs that are giving me a drive to want to make things again, so thank you! I wanted to ask if you had any other inspirations for your characters that you maybe hadn't listed or had wanted to elaborate on? I really look forward to seeing what you and those you work with continue to create!
Keiko Takemiya, Kentaro Miura, Hajime Isayama, Todd McFarlane, Katsuya Terada, Ayami Kojima, Masamune Shirow, Riyoko Ikeda, Yasuhiro Nightow, Kouta Hirano, Lee Bermejo, Yoji Shinkawa, Junichi Hayama, Hiroyuki Okiura, Naoyuki Onda, Jhonen Vasquez, Tim Burton, Tatsuki Fujimoto, Toshiharu Murata, and Tetsuya Nomura are all the most major influences that come to mind - They all heavily influenced the way I draw and approach character design.
I grew up with a lot of their media, so I've always pulled from them in some way. It's helped me to have a decent balance of very stylized to more realistic influences, so I think I fall somewhere in between. Very anime inspired but I feel I can call my style my own - I wouldn't consider my influences too obvious. The graphical styles that I try to mimic are more obvious though, especially Metal Gear Solid I think.
(A lot of my influences are Japanese, so I guess I'll put this in manga terms) Of the two project's that I'm working on right now, Zelda Retold and Revenant, Zelda leans more into my Shoujo influences while Revenant pulls more from all of the Seinen media I've watched/read, though they both share the same basic style.
I especially implore anyone else who reads this post and doesn't recognize any of these names to specifically check out Keiko Takemiya, Katsuya Terada, Riyoko Ikeda, Yoji Shinkawa, Junichi Hayama, Hiroyuki Okiura, and Naoyuki Onda's art and/or animation work. (Some of the others, like Kentaro Miura and Kouta Hirano, I'd advise checking out with caution)
edit: fixing typos because this ended up being huge sslkaklsgklsdgkl

Random ask, do you have any books (eastern or western) or manga/manhwa that inspire your writings?
An interested question about my writing?
Tumblr media
Anyway, yes, obviously. Why do you think I write meta? It's so I can learn from things I like to figure out how they're written and what various pieces do, so I can consider how I might do them myself.
What pieces inspire what works depends, of course. I have a series of short stories that are pretty heavily inspired by JR--I don't think anyone who's read both hasn't seen the connection. They're very soft, gentle short stories about two men traveling around and solving domestic emotional problems and their magic is a blatant allegory for queerness.
And then one of the projects that's on hold until I can finish up the revisions I'm currently working very hard on is inspired partially by wanting to write a character dynamic similar to Sherliam's, "I saw you and you knew me, because the things about me that I thought kept me isolated were reflected in you." Like, the characters are a couple of disabled teenage musicians, not criminals or detectives, and they're not even rivals, but that vibe is something I wanted to capture specifically. And the much of the rest of the book is inspired by my job: I don't read books for work, but I came to terms with how much less I read these days than I used to when I remind myself I spend almost my entire day job reading things about a couple of very rare diseases and medications, and I've learned so much about them and the experiences they come with that they've filtered into my writing now.
The current project I'm working on, I don't know that I would say is directly inspired by any particular work. It's been a long time writing it and working on it and it's been very much a recovery project for me and a rebuilding of who I am as a writer and how I write as I pull myself out of a horrific writing crash. It doesn't have any strong particular elements from any specific thing like I mentioned above, but a lot of what I've learned over the last few years have gone directly into it in other ways.
Anyway, I think finding inspiration for your own art in art you love is vitally important. That art resonated with you for some reason, so of course it makes sense to radiate that back out--it matched some frequency of your soul, and your soul sends frequencies out in your own art. Finding a frequency of your heart you know and recognize can be a great thing to use.
Of course, there were some very Formative influences from when I was younger and still inventing my own writing style that stick around in some form or another. Zelazny's refusal to explain anything and trust the reader a little too much is the one I recognize most easily, but there are others.
And I think...I think YuuMori may have changed me fundamentally as a writer. I think about stories not completely differently, but in many emphasized and changed ways because of it. It's very different and its strengths are ones I've not often been drawn to, and it's so easy for me to pick apart and evaluate, and something I'm so impressed by, during a time period when I really needed to restructure my entire process and conceptualize stories, that...I think that's going to stick with my fundamentally for a long, long time. I'll write stories that don't look anything like it, I think, but the way it changed me as an artist will still be there, I think.

Your original illustrations are really fantastic. I dig the colors and the anime girls. I feel like I resonate with them well, so I am curious about what creatively influences you. Like... Why do you color as you do? Why are your illustrations of anime girls? What do you think of when illustrating? Are there artists, pieces of media, or events in your life that inspire your stylings? Sorry if that seems like a lot or if I'm being intrusive! I just really want to know why your art is the way it is, but I feel that if I ask that so simply, I may not receive an answer with nuance, which is what I'm hoping for.
no worries about being intrusive, if anything, i appreciate the ask!
there's no clear-cut answer for a lot of these, but i'll try to articulate as much as much as possible. i started drawing from a very young age (~5 or so), and my preference was always cartoons/games/anime. i always enjoyed heavy stylization - not that i disliked realism, it just felt as if i had already seen so much of it before? and this isn't to discredit such works, just that they werent something i personally gravitated towards.
as i got older, i realized i wanted to pursue my goal of becoming an artist. things started to change when i entered college, though. it's a choice i dont regret, but i often felt a bit lost in comparison to my peers - because i didnt really draw [or study/learn] the way they did. i still struggle with insecurities regarding technical skill or talent because of this - and i actually stopped drawing for a year or so after i graduated. i kept thinking "its just another anime style anyways." (which is discrediting in and of itself, as all art has value regardless of how subjective it may be).
basically, i did a lot of soul searching - and the reasons i wanted to draw started to resurface. i loved drawing incredibly cute, yet somewhat outlandish looking characters. of course there's a sense of nostalgia with this, but i always preferred the art used for older anime (90s and early-mid 2000s specifically). i'm also really into hobbyani, which is basically hobby/kids media (precure, duel masters, beyblade, etc). i love the sense of experimentation that comes from designers who intentionally market stuff to a broader audience within restrictions, if that makes sense? it just seems to resonate with me.
i'm also heavily into old tech/computer graphics. a big example of this is the old (and still running!) chat program known as worldsplayer. i discovered it about a decade ago, and while a lot of people found it ominous or strange, it felt... comfortable to me. reminded me a lot of the stuff i used to play as a kid, but beyond that, a sense of style/texture i wanted to replicate in my artwork.
(as a sidenote: i actually run a sideblog dedicated to old chatroom media called digitalspacetraveler!)
as for specific inspirations/artists? i love the traditional sketchiness of van gogh, rembrandt, etc. a lot of classical painters during the renaissance era + beyond come to mind. for more modern artists, id say yoshitoshi abe, shigenobu matsumoto (duel masters mangaka), yoshihiko umakoshi (doremi, heartcatch precure, casshern sins), hajime ueda, and a plethora of artists on tumblr/pixiv/twitter.
basically, i love the idea of combining ridiculous amounts of texture with otherwise cutesy and/or 'smooth' styles, such as those found in anime/manga. the end goal is pretty different from the initial sketch, but that's what makes it fun to me. mimicking traditional mediums while also incorporating digital processing, overlays, and filters!

Don't reblog this post, I don't want it being spread around!
// Just rating Aldebaran's designs
Explanation below
S: Hades arc + Soul of Gold. My brain just imprinted and decided, this is him. In general, Aldebaran's design is cool bc I feel like it really pushed Kurumada to get creative with his design and he stands out from the others as a result. IMO, this is the best mix from his manga's looks, with the one from the anime. A: In general, I'm really indifferent towards the 3D reboot that Netflix started out and Crunchyroll is doing. But I'll give it that: for the 2nd volume, they did a good job adapting their designs from 2D to 3D. It just happens that ATP, I prefer him with long hair. Same thing, for his brief appearance like that in the classic anime. B: I have a love and hate relationship with Legend of Sanctuary's designs, all of them tbh. I feel like most of them are unnecessarily convoluted, with way too much going on. And Aldebaran's glow up is like... Way too funny for me. Props for the team, wanting to shyly acknowledge his nationality tho (the armor has green, yellow and blue details). His face IS really nice, I loved the nose piercing. But everything else is too much. Some times I like this design, other times I find it way too silly looking. C: G's incarnation was like really close to hitting the bottom If it weren't for the fact that this is like the only incarnation that's the most consistent With his skin color... Even if the art style spectacularly fails him. Unfortunately, it is still heavily influenced by his manga incarnation. D: Classic manga's design are a trainwreck, more news at 11. I'll chalk it up to the chance that when Kurumada created Aldebaran's design, he hadn't thought entirely through his character. I don't think he originally was meant to be Brazilian, BUT ALAS. I'm not saying there aren't fair skinned and blond haired Brazilians, but they are mainly reserved to an entirely different part of the country. It's not a common sight in most regions here, and that usually implies a different kind of mixing. As such, I tend to prefer his incarnations, that give him darker hair colors.

66. No Longer Human, by Junji Ito
Tumblr media
Owned: No, library Page count: 612 My summary: Yozo Oba is a man on the edge of humanity. He is desperately unhappy, locked in the manufactured personality of a clownish buffoon, longing to find his place in the world. And yet all he can do is spiral, destructing himself and all around him in the doing. Death stalks his every step. And yet, he still cannot die. My rating: 3/5 My commentary:
Here's a weird one. As I've said previously, I really like Junji Ito's work, so whenever I see anything he's done on the shelves, I'm gonna give it a read. I knew absolutely nothing about this particular work, not even that it is an adaptation of an apparently very well-regarded novel. It was a...strange experience to read, honestly. Very unlike Junji Ito's other work that I've read - which makes sense, because it's not his original story. The usual works of Ito's that I've read tend to be short story collections, or short stories that amass to a greater narrative. This was one narrative the whole way through, and a lot more of a restrained one than much of Ito's notoriously body horror-heavy tales.
Speaking of, my first note here is that the art is excellent. Ito's usual style is a lot more restrained in this one, with less of a focus on the bizarre body horror and more about humans in realistic if exaggerated situations, with a few ghost hallucinations thrown in for good luck. The subtler art here works exceptionally well, with the more grotesque images that are Ito's trademark being saved for select surreal and shocking moments. As such, an emphasis is placed at times on the body - we see tongues extended to the point of looking unnatural, or facial expressions that are strained and exaggerated. When Weird Things start to happen, that's when the horror rachets up, made all the more impactful for its scarcity. But most of the art is subtly unnerving rather than outright spooky, and it works so, so well.
And, okay, here's the thing I've been dancing around. I didn't really like the story here. The main character was kind of annoying? It's a delicate subject - after I finished the book I looked up the original novel, to find that he was heavily based on the author, Osamu Dazai, who seems to have had some mental health struggles and a tendency towards nihilism. That said, I'm not sure the way that this was portrayed, at least in this manga version, was all that interesting. Oba was just self-destructive, and destructive of all around him. Everyone he loved or cared about was destroyed due to him, though not always by him directly; still, he often planted the seeds of their destruction. But for all of that...I'm not really sure what the point was? I'm willing to admit ignorance on my part, or possible issues with the adaptation, or the literal or cultural translation of the book. But I'd have loved to see more introspection on Oba's part, or a more nuanced version of why he was the way he was. The narrative just seems to take his existential unhappiness and suchlike for granted, without necessarily delving into why this is the case or what factors might have influenced him. It just felt unsatisfying as a whole.
Next, murder and malice in Jacobean England.

Hey, i really enjoy your art!! Where did you learn your art style? Or what references did you practice from?
thank you!!
I don't really have a great answer to this coz my style at this point is super hodge-podge, but I used to watch a lot of speedpaints as a kid and I started off heavily influenced by manga (khr and bleach and naruto!!) and then tried to make my style more realistic as I got more into tv/movies and comics, which involved a lot more photo studies. I follow a lot of artists and try to incorporate what I think is cool about their styles into my own. Basically anything I like is a reference! which these days is dc comic artists and other fanartists

So yeah I like experimenting with my artstyle ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The biggest issue with my standard style is that for my darker and edgier stories it wouldn't fit without taking the reader out of it. I mean I guess I could go the Higurashi route of cute characters contrasted against the horrors they commit but like, I don't want that for my writing?
TBH I've even considered turning my darker stories into novels instead of comics. But given both my art and writing style has been heavily influenced by anime and manga I don't think the overall story structure would work as well as a novel. Also I'm like really shit at writing long winded things.

3, 4, and 6 for the weirdly specific artist ask game? 👉👈
Ooh alright!
3. What ideas come from when you were little?
I’ve always been a huge fan of high fantasy, so my go-to drawings that aren’t fan art are always fairies, mermaids, and high-fantasy characters! And honestly those ideas still influence my fan art what with my AUs and all lmao
4. Favorite character/subject that’s a bitch to draw?
Martel and Winry, unfortunately 😭 I think it’s because my style heavily favors long, sharp, and mature faces, so I really struggle with doing my interpretation of them. Also, lately I’ve really wanted to draw Jill Valentine and something about her makes her really hard to draw, so I haven’t even been able to finish a sketch :(
As far as non-people subjects that I struggle with, wings and roses always kill me inside a little bit. Something about wing anatomy has never clicked well with me, even if they’re bat or dragon wings. Roses aren’t even hard, they’re just really tedious and time consuming (which sucks because I love roses a lot)
6. Anything that might subconsciously inspire you?
I think a lot of anime and manga probably does. I think I picked up a few things from Hirohiko Araki when I was watching JJBA, for sure. Other ones that I’ve probably subconsciously adopted from are Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Revolutionary Girl Utena, The Rose of Versailles, and, of course, FMAB. I don’t usually directly try to emulate features of anime, but I think I probably do subconsciously just by appreciating art styles. JJBA and FMAB have definitely been the most obvious inspirations of the bunch, though.
Video games also probably do quite a bit. My love for series like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, NieR, Persona, Metal Gear, Pathologic, Soulsborne, and Dishonored have almost certainly been influential to my growth as an artist. Honestly, I think that anything someone loves a lot and puts a lot of time into loving has to influence them some amount. When you look at something and think about it very often, it probably comes with you when you’re trying to draw. Video games, to me, seem uniquely suited to this since they (ideally) should be an immersive experience that you stay in for a while. But also that’s coming from me who tends to prefer video games to shows or movies lol.
Tl;dr: I like anime and video games, so probably a bunch of those lol.

Relationship status: Engaged! God only knows how that happened, lol 😂
Favorite color: Pink! All kinds of pink! And also black, lol
Favorite food: This is a tricky one cuz I like so many foods, but I'm gonna have to go with sushi! There's a very specific roll that my fave sushi restaurant in my hometown makes that I order every time I go there.
Song stuck in my head: Gold Trans Am by Kesha. It's literally THE Miranda x Stephen song, lol
Current time: 9:18 pm
Dream trip: I really wanna go to Japan someday! And there are several places I'd like to go in Europe! The rest of my band all got to go to Europe on tour before I joined and I'm literally so jealous 😭
Last book I read: Assassins by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. It's part of the Left Behind series for those who don't know, so like, about the rapture and the end times and shit. Reading it as an adult and also an atheist is...a trip.
Last book I enjoyed reading: I don't read books as much as I'd like to, so I'm gonna list my favorite manga instead! The Gentleman's Alliance Cross by Arina Tanemura 💖 I just adore that series and the art heavily influenced my own drawing style in high school
Last book I hated: The last book I read for sure, as well as the rest of the series I've finished so far. All the Christian characters are unbearable hypocrites and none of them have much of anything to talk about that doesn't involve God. Hoo boy the writing annoys me, lol
Favorite thing to cook: My fiance is the good cook in the relationship. He legit makes some restaurant quality stuff! I on the other hand can make a pretty mean Mac and cheese and that's about it 😂
Favorite spare time craft: I just spend all my free time drawing cuz I love it so much 💖 my favorite thing is designing characters, even if I'll never go on to use them for anything
Niche dislike: Hmm. Sketchbooks that are spiral-bound! They just don't look as nice long term and the covers always run the risk of tearing off if you use them heavily. Unfortunately for me, most mixed media sketchbooks tend to be constructed this way, so that's what I currently have. Which is probably why I've been using my tablet more and more lately, lol
Opinion on circuses: I've never been to one personally and I'm not sure I'd ever go. It just seems like it might be too overwhelming an environment for me tbh 😅
I'm gonna tag @chordsykat @yayruthiee @frienderbender @dethmetalclown and whoever else would like to do this 😊

Different comic art styles and narratives
Tumblr media
In an alternate 1985 America, costumed superheroes are part of everyday life. When one of his former comrades is murdered, masked vigilante Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) uncovers a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his retired associates, only one of which has true powers, Rorschach glimpses a far-reaching conspiracy involving their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the world's future.
Watchmen's story is very unique in the fact that it mixes superheroes with the real world, having links to specific parts in our history but being completely different because of the influence of super heroes. i don't think that my story and watchmen have much in common, i think the only thing in common with the stories is magic / powers.
Tumblr media
all the super heroes at there base are humans, that is no the case for mu characters, none of my main characters are human, most have human features but none are actually born human, i did this for diversity but also i just prefer drawing fantasy creatures
the artist for the comic is called Allan Moore his art style is very appealing using a harsh black for the shadows as well as cross hatching instead of darkening the colours, however he does use darked colours for texturing. his art style is easy to spot his style due to his unique style of shading and colouring, using eye catching colours without them being too bold or vibrant, this fits in with the super hero vibe. Sin city
Tumblr media
Sin City is a movie that tells four tales of crime adapted from Frank Miller's popular comics. The movie is heavily influenced by film-noir and features a muscular brute who's looking for the person responsible for the death of his beloved Goldie, a man fed up with Sin City's corrupt law enforcement who takes the law into his own hands after a horrible mistake, a cop who risks his life to protect a girl from a deformed pedophile, and a hitman looking to make a little cash
Sin City- I really like the detail in each of the character designs and the minimal use of colour, but this style of working would not work for me or my own comic as it would be too long a process. Having to draw each of these characters across multiple panels on one page would be far too difficult, and take too much time.
my story isn't as dark as sin city, although most of my characters have dark backstories, and some dark things happen to my characters, but my story doesn't really include rape or pedophiles, but it does include drug use, murder and death.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World: Scott pilgrim is very cartoony in style, and the shading uses a harsh black which I appreciate in practicality, but it's not the way I like to shade personally as I think it makes the characters look a bit too flat. The colour palette is also consistent throughout the page, with each panel sharing the same or very similar colours. I struggle with colours a lot, and find it difficult keeping them consistent through the page. To help me I usually use Pinterest, finding specific colour schemes to use on individual characters and environments.
Tumblr media
I often don't use colour in my work and am currently unsure if I will colour my comic. I find it interesting that Scott Pilgrim was originally released in black and white, to resemble a manga:
Tumblr media
Sweet Tooth:
Gus, a young boy with deer-like features, lives a quiet life deep in the woods with his father. He learns many things, from medical care to religious prophecy. Though he loves his religious father, he yearns to escape as he learns that there is not fire past the trees but simply more land
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my mum and dad watched the Netflix adaptation for the comic and i watched a few bits of it as well, and know the plot has to do with the father hiding his son in the woods as well as some kind of virus. my story does not involve a virus it does involve something being hidden, i also have a half deer character like Gus, called Gregory although he is not a main character and just a baby, but he's still partly inspired.
Tumblr media
i really enjoy this art style its angled and unique, i enjoy angled artwork as it can show movement and look neat while look appealing. i should probably try to draw in a simplistic style as it will be better for producing work faster, but i can always cut down on time in different ways, like in this comic using a lack of colour and bold black for dark shading. however some of the comic is in colour which i think is done really well keeping characters distinct from their backgrounds while also keeping a realistic look to the panels and the world.

An entire high school class is summoned to a fantasy world and given magical powers in hopes of turning one of them into a great Sage. A few, however, did not receive this blessing, and one of them already possessed the ability to kill anyone or anything in his way.
My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered is such a wild show for me.
The promo art and logo looks generic. The manga's art is average to mediocre. The anime is bargain basement quality.
But the story is like potato chips. What wild, ridiculous plot point are they throwing in next? Zombies. Vampires. Robots. Battle Royale-style death matches. Powers that can do whatever the power's user can justify them capable of doing*. And all new ways where the overpowered death ability is... really overpowered.
I keep coming back for more.
*Funnily enough, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End's magic is also heavily influenced by the mage's imagination. When Frieren does it, it's dramatic. When Instant Death does it, it's for the gags.

June 18th, International Manga Museum and Kimono rental
Today we went to the international manga museum. This museum was pretty close to the hotel, so the commute wasn’t far. The museum had a massive collection of manga available to the public for browsing, and had a great exhibit on the nature of manga and how they are made.
After that I went with some people to a nice Italian restaurant for lunch, where I had minestrone, and linguine with pesto sauce. It was very good, and the restaurant was kind to accommodate our large group. We decided to find something for dessert, and came across a hotel with a little shop where you could buy macarons and other desserts. It was a little bit pricy, but it was an elegant and luxurious dessert.
Then we went to the Kimono store where we rented kimonos. It was so much fun. I felt like a yakuza boss or something. 10/10 I would do again.
Academic reflection
There is some debate among scholars today about the origins of manga. Some say it comes from Japan’s tradition of caricature style art in nanga, ukiyoe, and screen doors and scroll paintings, but some say it derives from western comic books, and animation. I don’t understand why these two factions are mutually exclusive. I see contemporary manga as influenced by both of those things. If neither Ukiyoe nor Disney had existed, I don’t think manga and anime would exist today as we know them.
Manga and anime contributes heavily to Japan’s immense soft power. Japan probably has more soft power than any country in the world except the United States. It exports its culture and pop culture around the world, and has had a great impact on me. This trip has really solidified my love of Japan. There is no other place like this country.
We got to see a kamishibai in the museum as well. These were pictures shows aimed towards children after the enf of WWII. Travelling artists would tell stories with pictures to audiences for money. Eventually many of these artists became mangaka (manga artists) later. I thought this was a unique and dying medium which probably brought joy to some desperately poor people at that time. I feel that this would still work in Japan today if it were still around. It’s amazing to me that people from such humble backgrounds could rise to become the authors of manga read by thousands.

Ooooh, only a couple of months... I've been here for over five years now. >3> I'm in SO DEEP. Welcome to the fandom, though! I'm super happy you stuck with the manga enough to end up making a blog. And yeah, the beginning half really has a different tone to it... in a way, it's a standalone story, kind of?? Now, for more questions! Who are your favorite characters, and why? What do you think of the art style? How would you have ended the story, if you could diverge from canon?
dang! i think my longest running fandom time is 10 years- my 10th year anniversary being this year in november/december !
1) hmmm. now it has been a while since i have read innocents again, but i remember becoming slightly attached to the diseased boy. REMY! REMY. yes i did go back and look. idk he just wanted to get better (´;ω;`) also christian. idk i think his kind of investigative personality paired with his obsessive behaivour is interesting.
2) art style doesnt really sway what i read. Furuyas is kind of unique though! i only heavily dislike 1) 2000s shoujou manga and 2) 2000s yaoi. those styles are ugly! throwing them in the waste bin.
3) this is a loaded question _φ(・_・ lets see,,, 100% taking the hugo stuff out. also taking out isabelle. i dont think isabelle had a huge influence on the plot. i would also take out michaels whole sub plot of his dad wanting to be pope. i would change this to simply being his church wanting total control and the children crusaders were hindering that.
as for changing hugo, after his more capitalistic tendencies are revealed to the group, they would begin to second guess why everyone else is with them. a “if this person betrayed me how do XYZ think?” something this big- these boys coming from a small community to having to trust strangers- would drastically change their way of thinking.
for isabelle, there honestly was no need for her plot wise. the issues she brought up would eventually come to light with the whole hugo thing. really i believe she was there to be a reference to the virgin mary.
i hope this answers your questions ! (*´꒳`*)
