Okay, so I rewatched PR:U for the first time since its release, and I definitely had some thoughts.
To begin with, what is with the really bizarre product placement in the beginning. Jake did not need to hold up those Oreos so blatantly lmao.
PR:U jumps straight into the action in a really identifiably different way than Pacific Rim does. In PR, Raleigh narrates the Kaiju War and then we see him and Yancy get into the Knifehead fight, and it flows really well overall. On the other hand, PR:U starts with a quick relay of the Kaiju War, and then we're introduced to Jake in the regions still affected by past Kaiju attacks (i.e. half-destroyed mansion, which I also have some thoughts on). So it quickly becomes clear he's got some black market dealings going on, and the first action sequence of the movie is Jake running from these random Jaeger scrappers (??). It's just really throwing compared to the first one, since we at least have a general idea of what's going on with Raleigh.
Side note: I'm assuming they're in the Bay Area that was largely evacuated considering they head toward a Jaeger scrapyard, so how does that mansion have like...any utilities.
So then we're introduced to Amara, who can build a sickass Jaeger but has no security system? I don't know, she seems really careful about being discovered for obvious reasons, so I feel her hideout would at least have an alarm or some kind of traps, But Jake essentially just strolls in.
Of course, then we have November Ajax vs. Scrapper, which I actually do like. Its nice to see what the new Jaegers look like, and see what Scrapper, the first single-pilot Jaeger, is capable of. This scene also really seals the tone of PR:U as kind of lighthearted and jokey while also having action and death, which isn't really the case in Pacific Rim.
Another thing I like: Amara and Jake's relationship. A lot of things about this movie feel funky, but I think the actors did a very good job of forming a very genuine-feeling bond between these two characters.
Mako's introduction just feels. very bizarre. I understand that she obviously can't be there in person, thus the hologram, but the whole situation just has a weird vibe that I can't place. I'm not sure if it's because Jake and Mako act so familiar with each other even though Jake was never mentioned in the movie, or because I'm just not a fan of the hologram bit.
Contrary to popular opinion (at least what I've seen), I really like the Jaegers in PR:U. I hate that they removed the realism from their movements that was always present in the first, but there were some very interesting weapons and new designs introduced at the same time, so I can let it slide. Except the giant rotating ball of blades on Bracer Phoenix, it can go die.
Mako's death is genuinely my least favorite scene in the movie for obvious reasons. She was essentially killed off for no reason, since we don't see much of Jake's grief, meaning they wrote her off for pointless plot purposes, which I hate.
I do enjoy the villain bait with Liwen, although it's a shame Newton ended up being the villain. They were definitely setting her up as an antagonist since she was on a side somewhat opposite to Mako's, and because it becomes clear that Shao Industries is somehow evil before having her turn around and attempt to stop Newton no matter the force necessary.
While on women in the movie, not a huge fan of how Jules was treated, but she's also not present that much so I won't go on and on about female characters being used a tool to create tension being male characters blah blah.
The fight against the Mega-Kaiju was...something. Suresh dying was completely out of the blue, and I hated it. I think the cadets all being so young is an odd decision to make, especially because in the first movie most of the Jaeger pilots come into the program in their very late teenage years at the least (besides Chuck and Raleigh, iirc). They try to justify the whole. child soldier-esque training by saying the Bond is stronger at a young age, but they didn't even have that young of recruits in the first PR and that was during a war so idk.
Raleigh not being mentioned at all is also a crime btw. Or Herc, for that matter, but he could at least make a little more justifiable sense than Raleigh.
Anyway, this was a really scattered collection of musings on the movie, but there we go.

i love the fandom idea that hermann and newt were mako's uncles as she grew up (i wanna say jake as well but then pr:u insinuated that newt's never met jake before and... ykw i'll ignore that) taking care of her when staker needed to do something, teaching her things of their field, just a whole bunch of uncle shenanigans.
so just imagine: the two of them noticing raleigh and mako becoming close—like suspiciously close. they are very much familiar with that kind of starstruck look.
it isn't necessary, giving raleigh the whole "you hurt her, you're dead" spiel bc 1) they know mako can kick his ass and don't need their coddling and 2) they don't want to intrude on what's going on between them.
but it just happens, suddenly. they come across raleigh, just the three of them, and they get to chatting. you know, about whatever comes to mind. how's piloting a jaeger again, the nuances of drifting, work-life, etc.
then they get around to talking abt their relationships with people on base. newt's the one who mentions meeting mako as a young teen and that they'd look after her from time to time. they get to talking about the time mako and newt stole all of hermann's baby carrots for some sort of experiment, hermann and mako covering newt's desk in chalk-dust in retaliation, the three of them heading out to lunch together and walking along the sea wall as the two bicker once more and mako laughing along—every little thing about their relationship with mako, laid out with careful words and gentle smiles bc that's also their kid too, in some way.
raleigh doesn't need much of a warning to know that they care deeply about mako, but the sharp glint in newt's eyes and the slight tilt of a head from hermann as he adjusts his grip on his cane, yeah. yeah that's as much of a threat he needs

the way the jaegers were so careless with destruction in pr:u makes me feel so so so wrong where in pr they fight and break shit but not to that extent and to a point where seeing the destruction doesn’t make u feel icky

Dude, I was so excited for PR:U that I watched it on opening night
And I walked away hating every fucking second of it. I have rewatched Pacific Rim enough times to recite it line for line and I have NEVER touched anything in the abomination after that one viewing.
I want to shift all reality into one where that fucking mess Does Not Exist
My sincerest condolences friend 🥲 I didn’t go opening night but I did pay to see it in theaters but I don’t think I’ve watched it again since 😅
I can recite it too! And there’s so many good lines that my brain thinks of them quite a bit! It’s one of the few movies I really don’t get tired of watching and it’s really close to my heart and the existence of the sequel makes me so sad 😭 I hereby submit that we simply banish it from our collective memories and our entire existence as it is simply not worth the brain power.
Can the universe stop ruining things we love just once? Once? Please!
Oof now I’m gonna wanna write a fix it fic or something when I haven’t written in months.
But feel free to slide into my inbox or my DMs anytime, I could write a whole essay on all the faults of that awful sequel purely out of resolved spite.

Howdy 🤠 Pacrim anon back again from the rabbit hole I’ve gladly jumped down LMAO
Apparently it’s Newt’s birthday today! And he’s apparently a Capricorn which makes me fucking die because my birthday was two days ago so we are that 🤏🏻 close. Also the amount of myself I’m beginning to see in Newt is terrifying. I did not intend to be blorbo’d here, but it’s like I’m looking into a foggy mirror shaped like Charlie Day
I’m watching Uprising right now and…it’s certainly a movie. It was filmed. It exists. But. BUT! Every scene with Newt so far has made me want to bite through my own femur. Like I’ve read all the spoilers. I’ve read all the fics. But seeing it happen, and knowing what’s really going on with the precursors, it makes the viewing experience so much better. I can get through the slog of the rest of the movie just for that.
Also, I hate how quick the jager’s in this movie movie??? Like bruh you’re several tons of metal, please act like it.
I’ve already been scouring AO3 for all the fics I can find, but if you have any that scratch your brain just right let me know. I will never turn down more Pacrim!
I hope you’re having a good day/night! ✌🏻
Hello!!!! welcome back!!!! i'm gonna be honest with you, reading this message put a grin on my face very early this morning when i first read it, which absolutely isn't an easy thing to do that early in the day. So, thank you for this ask and for making my day brighter right off the bat :]
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!! I want you to know how enamored i am with the phrase "its like im looking into a foggy mirror shaped like charlie day" because i absolutely adore it. and, i ABSOLUTELY understand that, even if its not the exact same degree! i definitely see some of myself in newt, but probably relate to hermann a lot more (mostly with the weird vernacular, eccentric propensity for math, tendency to talk in an "all at once" manner, etc etc). i have a friend who jokingly calls me a combination of the two, which i think sums it up pretty well (i'm also a weird, rambly, punk [aspiring] biologist so it evens out). though, i'm really glad you could find a character to see yourself in like that— imo it's always really neat when that happens. congrats on your blorboning ^_^
As for uprising... YEAH. YEAH. it truly is 'a movie.' i honestly haven't been able to stomach watching it in its entirely, so all my information comes from friends, my girlfriend, analysis on tumblr, clips, and summaries (and criticism through fic-it fics, of course, though i recognize that thats far from a reliable source for canon fgdfklg)
AND THE JAEGERS. YEAH THAT SOUNDS RIDICULOUS. i keep hearing about how weird and off the jaegers are in pr:u, its bizarre </3
I WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO SHARE SOME OF THE FICS SCRATCHING MY BRAIN!!!! i don't wanna leave this ask to rot in my inbox by accident so im answering this first BUT i will reblog a bit later in the day with a comprehensible list of my favorite pacrim fics so far (read: newmann fics. i think they're literally all newmann centered, mostly at least) or make a separate post and link it here! THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MY RECCOMENDATIONS!! it seriously means a lot and truly delights me :3
i hope you're having a nice day/night as well!!! may the future be kinder to you than it was to the "pacific rim sequel" ヾ(•ω•`)o

“The villain was this tech guy that had invented basically sort of the internet 2.0. And then they realized that all his patents came to him one morning. And so little by little, they started putting together this and they said, ‘Oh, he got them from the precursors.’ The guys that control the kaiju. And then we found out that the precursors are us thousands of years in the future. They’re trying to terraform, trying to re-harvest the earth to survive. Wow. And that we were in exo-bio-suits that looked alien, but they were not. We were inside. And it was a really interesting paradox... To me, the hero was Mako Mori. I wanted her not only to live, I wanted her to be one of the main characters in the second movie.”
I… what

Who, me? Scrolling through the 2 year old Newmann tag? On Tumblr? And crying about it, even though the last movie was released 3 years ago? Nah, I fear it is not I who is mentally unstable but you, dear reader, for finding this while scrolling through the Newmann tag as well

insatiable: songs to play while you clean the blood off of your pageant dress; you’re an angry, righteous, hungry teenage girl, and what is more dangerous than that? what is more terrifying? now, if only the people you care about would stop abandoning you... (patty bladell from insatiable)
biologist: songs to play as the world falls apart under your fingertips; you haven’t slept or eaten in days but there are these voices in your head that just won’t go away and you’ve almost forgotten the name of the man you’re in love with (newt geiszler from pacific rim)
jester: songs to play while you drink a pineapple smoothie and stare across the police station at a man who never believes a word you say (oh well, for the moment he’s forgotten you’re here so you don’t have to pretend to be something you’re not), but there’s a sinking feeling in your stomach because you’re starting to feel like your life is one big joke (shawn spencer from psych)

so i was reading the wiki timeline for Uprising to see what i might be getting myself into if i decide to add PR:U and the anime to my timeline and let me tell you...
one of the first things i read was "Australia is declared lost" and hoo wee mama that was a shell shock because what do you mean australia is fucking lost. what happened in between the movie and that to just. write off an entire continent.
so anyways. still making up my mind on PR:U because as much as i want the full timeline, there are so many contradictions and i also don't particularly want to write about the amount of convoluted bs that happens
