Fucking Gorgeous FM-Towns model 2F on craigslist near me. I don't have money or the knowledge to use this thing, but god it's amazing.

The FM Towns was a Fujitsu computer introduced in 1989 in Japan. It's built around an Intel 386, but it's not a fully PC compatible system. It ran Windows 3.x and Towns OS, which was built on top of MS-DOS and ran in 32-bit mode using an extender.

It didn't require a hard drive, booting the OS off the CD-ROM drive. It uses a custom graphics chip that's not VGA compatible, supporting sprites and overlays, with full kanji in ROM.

Audio-wise, it used a Yamaha OPN2, so it sounds much like a Sega Megadrive/Genesis.

Later systems added DOS/V (a version of MS-DOS designed for Japanese users) support, making it more like a MS-DOS computer.

There was also the FM Towns Marty, which made it into more of a console, looking less like a PC. This kept compatibility, however.

(This is, by the way, the only console to ship with a floppy drive standard)

Anyway these machines are neat and rare, but part of why they're rare is that they didn't sell very well. They're full computers so they're pretty expensive, and the FM Towns series was getting beaten by NEC's PC98 at first and then DOS/V clones later. They just didn't have the compatibility with DOS/V software to really justify them being a viable choice over the much cheaper DOS/V clones, and they had a smaller library than the much more popular PC98 series.

Still, they're very nifty machines.

Fun fact: They're called "FM Towns", right? FM is Fujitsu Micro, but "Towns" is the codename. They were named after the physicist Charles H. Townes, who did some of the fundamental work in the development of the maser, a predecessor to the laser, for which he shared a Nobel Prize in 1964.

You'll note his name is "Townes", but the system is "Towns". Futjitsu changed the spelling so that people would pronounce it correctly, rather than potentially pronounce it "tow-nes".

So, raven beak lore! It starts with the chozo, a race of magical bird people. Basically the chozo are spiritualistic and 90% of them are really cool. They move to alien planets and settle there, and make sure everything they do is in tandem with the planet's environment. There are two main tribes that we know about, the Thoha and the Mawkin. The Thoha are peaceful and the Mawkin are more warlike. The Thoha ended up settling on a planet called SR3-88 but ended up finding a species dubbed the x-parasites. What they do is they infect you, steal your dna, reproduce inside you, eat you from inside out, then turn into a more deadly version of you. They cannot be harmed by any means, so the Thoha made the metroids to wipe them out. Metroids are basically floating jellyfish that eat energy. If they latch onto you, you're dead. They can also only be harmed by being frozen and blasted to bits with missiles. Unfortunately, due to SR3-88's natural aeon energy (magical energy stuff that never gets explained), the metroids ended up evolving and gaining a lifecycle, and threatened the Thoha. The Thoha, lead by a dude called Quiet Robe, end up calling for the Mawkin, lead by Raven beak. The Mawkin trap the metroids underneath the planet, but also kill every single Thoha other than Quiet Robe. They end up taking him back to their own planet, ZDR so they can make more metroids for an army. However, one of their soldiers got infected by an x-parasite, turning everything to utter shit. A buncha stuff happens, and samus genocides the metroids and unleashes the x-parasites. She ends up getting metroid dna injected into her, so she can now eat the X like they're gummy snacks now. Raven beak realizes this and sends out a video of an x-parasite on ZDR so the space government will investigate. The space government sends out EMMI, which are unkillable robots meant for extraction. Raven beak manages to hack every single one somehow. Samus gets sent in but Raven beak kicks her ass and she loses all her upgrades. She's left alone in the bottom of the planet with her AI companion Adam (a whole other can of worms, I'm not getting into him), and by the end it's revealed that Adam was never talking to her, and Raven beak was just impersonating him so he could get Samus's dna and use her to clone metroids. Also, going way back, Samus ended up getting adopted by the Chozo because Ridley (another character you should look into) ended up murdering her entire planet. Samus ended up getting Thoha and Mawkin dna, the Mawkin side being given from Raven beak, which is why she's technically his daughter, but not really. That line is kinda controversial, but I feel like it sorta fits Raven Beak's egotisical nature, since while even fucking Ridley was more of a dad to Samus, Raven beak waltzes in and claims position as her father. Anyway, Samus beats the shit out of Raven Beak, becomes the Super Metroid TM, and Raven Beak gets infected by the X. The parasite that ate him is utterly fucking decimated by Samus's hyperbeam and then the planet explodes as Samus makes her escape. Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything! If you ever wanna learn more metroid, I'm happy to help, and if you ever wanna play the prime trilogy, I know a way to set it up for pc!

Wow! Damn, Raven sounds utterly devilish and fun to watch! I love villains like this….the smart, deceitful ones. I really know nothing about this series but I have an ever-growing list of things I need to check out, so I will have to take a look! I need a laptop desperately and to get Steam to play a few different games, so maybe I’ll reach out when the time comes <3

Resolution Independence, Zoom, Fractional Scaling, Retina Displays, High-DPI: A Minefield

I already explained how CPU dispatch is a minefield: It doesn't cause intermittent bugs. It often doesn't even cause crashes. Badly implemented CPU dispatch means you build something on your machine that runs on your machine, but doesn't perform the dispatch correctly, so it crashes on somebody else's machine, or something build on a worse machine still runs fine on a better machine, but not as well as it could. Some of the bugs only manifest with a different combination of compiler, build system, ABI, and microarchitecture. CPU dispatch is a minefield because it's easy to get wrong in non-obvious ways.

I recently played an old game on Windows 11, with a high-DPI 2560x1600 (WQXGA) monitor. Text was too small to read comfortably read, and the manufacturer had set the zoom level to 150% by default. When I launched the game, it started in fullscreen mode, at 2560x1660, which Windows somehow managed to zoom up to 3840x2400. The window was centered, with all the UI elements hidden behind the edges of the screen. When I switched from fullscreen to windowed, the window still covered the whole desktop and the task bar. I quit the game and switched to another. That game let me choose the resolution before launch. At first I tried 2560x1660, but nothing worked right. Then I started it again, at 1920x1080. It didn't look quite right, and I couldn't understand what was going on. Windows has scaled the game up to 2880x1620, which looked almost correct. At this point I realised what was happening, and I set the zoom to 100%. Both games displayed normally.

The first game was an old pixel art platformer from the early 2000s, with software rendering. The second is a strategy game built with OpenGL around 2015, with high-resolution textures based on vector art, and with a UI that works equally well on an iPad and on a PC.

It was hard to read things on that monitor, so I set the font scaling to 150%, but somehow that made things harder to read. Some applications did not honour the font size defaults, and others did, and still others had tiny UI elements with big letters that were spilling out.

Next, I tried to run a game on Ubuntu, with Sway (based on wayland) as the desktop environment. It's a different machine, a 15.6 inch 1920x1080 laptop with an external 1920x1080 23 inch monitor attached. I zoomed the internal display of the laptop by 150% in order to have windows appear equally sized on both monitors.

What is happening on Windows 11 seems to be that even OpenGL games that don't think in terms of pixels, but in terms of floating point coordinates that go from -1 to +1 in both the x and y dimension, (so 0.1 screen units are different sizes in different dimensions) are treated the same as software rendering games that give a buffer of software-rendered pixels to the operating system/graphics environment. Making an already resolution-independent window bigger feels pointless.

What I would want to happen by default, especially in the case of the software-rendered game, is for the operating system to just tell my game that the desktop is not sized 2560x1600, but 1706x1066 (or just 1600x1000), and to then scale that window up. If the window is scaled up, mouse position coordinates should be automatically scaled down from real pixels to software pixels, unless the mouse cursor is captured: If I am playing a DOOM clone or any first-person game, I do not want relative mouse sensitivity to decrease when I am playing on a 4K monitor or when I am maximising the window (if playing in windowed mode). If I have a retina/zoomed display attached, and a standard definition/unzoomed display, and there is a window overlapping both screens, then only the part of a window that is on the zoomed display should be zoomed in.

What I would want to happen with a "resolution-independent" game is this: The game queries the size of the monitor with a special resolution-independent query function. There is no way to "just make it backward compatible". This is a new thing and needs new API. The query returns

Size of all desktops in hardware pixels

Size of all screens in real-world centimetres

Preferred standard text size in pt/cm (real world) or pixels

Zoom factor (in percent) of all desktops

Which screens are touch or multi-touch screens

Is dark mode enabled?

Which desktop is "currently active"

The "preferred" desktop to open the window

This information would allow an application to create a window that is the appropriate size, and scale all text and UI elements to the appropriate size. We can't assume that a certain size in pixels is big enough for the user to comfortably hit a button.

Even this information might not be enough. What should be the behaviour if a windowed OpenGL application is dragged between a 4K monitor at 200% zoom, and a 640x480 CRT? Should the OS scale the window down the same way it currently scales windows up when they aren't "retina aware"?

I don't really know. All I do know is that Windows, Mac OS, and different wayland compositors all handle high-DPI zoom/retina differently, in a way that breaks sometimes, in some environments. But it looks fine if you don't have scaling set. There are ways to tell the windowing system "I know what I am doing" if you want to disable scaling, but these are easy to abuse. There's a cargo cult of just setting "NSHighResolutionCapable" or "HIGHDPIAWARE" without understanding why and why not. Win32 provides all the information you need, with a very complex API. Wayland has a very different approach. SDL is aware of the issue.

I really hope SDL3 will make this work. If you get this wrong, you'll only realise when somebody on a different operating system with a different monitor tries to get your game to fit on the screen by fiddling with the registry, and it goes from not fitting on the monitor to text being too small read.

Summary:

Warframe is a free-to-play sci-fi fantasy third-person shooter developed and released by Digital Extremes for the PC on March 25, 2013. It was later ported to the PlayStation 4 (on November 15, 2013), Xbox One (on September 2, 2014), and Nintendo Switch (ported by Panic Button on November 20, 2018).

Built on the original concept for the studio's earlier 2008 game Dark Sector, Warframe is set in a far future where the universe is dominated between three factions: the Grineer (a militaristic empire of human clones), the Corpus (a highly-technological merchant cult), and the Infested (those mutated by techno-organic parasites). Players control a member of the Tenno: descendants of an ancient civilization that have awaken from cryostasis to a hostile universe.

Under guidance from a mysterious figure known as The Lotus, players are outfitted with an advanced exo-armor system (known as a Warframe) that give them superhuman mobility, regenerative shields, and a unique set of supernatural abilities (similar to Heroes in MOBAs). While the game is usually played in a four-player co-operative setting, later updates added competitive PvP matchmaking support (with up to eight players in a single match).

Since its original closed beta release (on October 25, 2012), the game has been under continuous development, with over 20 major content updates (each with numerous smaller updates) that added new gameplay systems, Warframes, weapons, enemies, cosmetics, and other content. The game is supported with a microtransaction system (where players purchase an in-game currency known as Platinum).

Hi Colin, just wanted to ask what brand was the ssd you used before to avoid it like the plague

Hello there,

The SSD that came with my prebuilt PC is Apacer Panther (x). I should've reimaged/cloned the thing during my first month, but at least the reinstallation wasn't too bad. The good news is it seems to be difficult and expensive acquiring this brand in the US so it should be easy to avoid.

I have 3 other SSD brands installed and I'd recommend going with them more: my #1 choice is always Samsung but they are pricey (you do get what you pay for with Samsung though), then crucial or Western Digital (both tend to be 20-30% cheaper than Samsung). I got the crucial m2 SSD the same time I got my prebuilt. I've been using it every day same time as the Apacer one and it's still super reliable: I'm using the crucial SSD for my Windows drive rn and the clone for backup if a Samsung. I personally wouldn't go outside of this holy trinity of SSDs if I build my own PC, but this prebuilt was easy $400 cheaper so I went with it back in 2019.

About once every other year, a great video game gives adult me the same emotional intensity that I recall from playing when I was 8-10 and the world was full of novelty and wonder. Some are PC releases like Avernum and Thea, some are semi-lost Flash games on Kongregate.

The rest, which is nearly all of them, are worse to me, even the indy 8-bit darlings. The 'best' of the videogame industry is still making a lot of bad decisions. As I regularly harp on at this blog, Master of Orion 1 is a game good enough for me to still play it, because it made a lot of good and clever design decisions, and later strategy games in its general genre just keep not making those decisions when MOO1 is right there to learn from.

A great many of the buttons in this UI should not exist at all. They make the game worse. Some buttons interact with subsystems of varying degrees of relevance. Some buttons have no game-mechanical effect at all, like the dropdown arrow on the "Hero" inset which folds up the inset and hides the Hero portrait so you can get a slightly less cluttered screen, but the folded-up inset is still there with fold-out button, squiggle icon, label text and content text.

Twenty years on and the interface for a space strategy game got worse by loading in too much crap.

Another common game failure is the return of loading animations, like in this Diablo-clone. (Apologies to Shadowrun Returns, but you are basically a Diablo-clone with better plot and characterization.) This was a solved problem. Bloody game devs unsolved it. Shadowrun Returns was not alone about unsolving this.

Yet another common game failure mode, particularly for CRPGs, is this:

The wiki issue generalizes beyond inventory items: I can look up one thing on a game wiki and then get my attention back to the game smoothly. If I have to look up a second thing on a wiki within a short span of time, I expect there will be more things I need to look up on the wiki so I might as well prepare, also I'm on the wiki already so I might as well read a little more, and suddenly I'm "playing the wiki" instead of playing the videogame. There goes the emotional intensity.

(Two examples of anti-wiki measures, which overlap a lot with anti-frustration features: City of Heroes will make the last few objectives emit helpful audio cues and glow with pulsing light when you've found most of the objectives in an area, so you don't need to look up "where's the last one?" on a wiki. Avernum will store your keys in a second quasi-inventory of Special Items that take up no weight and no space and cannot be lost, so you don't have to worry about accidentally selling them, nor checking "which keys should I bring to X dungeon?" on a wiki.)

Being an 8-bit indie doesn't fix any of these recurring problems.
